An exceptional exposure of Late Ordovician glaciogenic sediments crops out in Dider, SE Algeria, within the Tassili N'Ajjer region. The sediments consist of sandstones and diamictites sandwiched between a Mid Ordovician fluvial and tidal sandstone (In Tahouite Formation) below and Early Silurian shale (Oued Imirhou Formation) above. Stratigraphic discontinuities within the Late Ordovician glaciogene succession include palaeovalley incisions and glacially striated pavements. Striation and fluting of a soft-bedded sediment beneath an ancient ice sheet is supported by abundant dewatering structures and soft-sediment gouges interpreted to have been produced by the action of stone ploughing. In Dider, two types of previously undescribed circular structures sit in negative relief on this glacial pavement, namely 1) paired thumb-shaped impressions 2 cm in diameter and 3 mm in depth, and 2) a 5 cm wide impression with 3 segmented nested cycles. A framboid or aggregate origin may be appropriate for the smaller of the features but the larger impression is interpreted as biogenic: internal complexity is characteristic, discounting concretion moulds and water escape structures. A biogenic origin as a coelenterate resting trace is proposed with speculation on conditions of exceptional preservation in an ancient periglacial environment.

Paleomagnetic studies on basic dikes in the eastern São Francisco Craton which have isotopic ages of 1.0–1.1 Ga, define an apparent polar wander path for South America over this time interval. The data indicate that the São Francisco Craton was at paleolatitudes between 40° and 65° at the time of emplacement of these dikes. Neo-Proterozoic sedimentary glaciogenic rocks, the Macaúbas Group, Bebedouro Formation, Ibiá Formation and Carandai Formation, crop out in central-eastern Brazil. An age of about 1.0 Ga has been proposed for these glacial deposits. Paleogeographical reconstructions of South America show a continental movement coherent with paleoenvironmental models proposed for the Macaúbas Group and suggest that the glacial period may have occurred between 1.01 and 1.08 Ga.

Palynomorph assemblages, especially chitinozoans and acritarchs, from the Upper Ordovician of well Nl-2 (north-east of the Algerian Sahara) are studied in order to precisely date the ultimate effects of the Late Ordovician glaciation and to document the impact of this major climatic stress on the diversity of the palynoplankton. References are made to stable isotope excursions and to global eustatic sea level variations in order to improve the local age determination. The Hassi el Hadjar Formation, i.e. glacio-marine diamictites, is interpreted as a transgressive event resulting from the melting of the northern Gondwana ice cap. It yields poorly preserved and moderately diverse chitinozoans of late Hirnantian age. Acritarchs are more abundant in the lower part of these "microconglomeratic clays", but display a low diversity and are badly preserved throughout the whole formation. Reworked individuals are recorded in both groups. The marine sediments of the M'Kratta Formation of latest Hirnantian age contain better preserved, more abundant and more diverse palynomorph assemblages, especially in the Upper Member. The composition of this palynoplankton indicates a fairly good faunal and phytoplankton recovery after the early Hirnantian climatic stress. The extinction of the Ordovician forms, and the appearance of Silurian type taxa occur only in the uppermost Hirnantian, i.e. following with a slight delay the glacial event. The overlying black shales of Wenlock age (lower part of the Oued Mehaiguène Formation) are indicative of marine anoxic environments. They yield a virtually exclusive, but enormous number of Tasmanacea. The very peculiar composition of this palynoplankton seems to be independent of the Late Ordovician glaciation and is most likely related to the factors that, later, generated and maintained anoxic conditions in this area.A new species of chitinozoan, Spinachitina oulebsiri sp. nov. from the latest Hirnantian M'Kratta Formation, is described and illustrated.

The Lower Palaeozoic deposits in North Africa are dominated by sandstones and shales which often lack biostratigraphically useful body fossils. Trilobite burrows ( Cruziana ) partly fill this gap and provide the basis for medium-resolution stratigraphic interpretations. Several Ordovician-Silurian ichnostratigraphically significant Cruziana forms have been found and studied in the Kufra Basin (SE Libya), including C. goldfussi and C. furcifera from the Lower Ordovician Hawaz Fm. and a new ichnospecies, C. kufraensis , occurring in transgressive sandstones at the base of the Lower Silurian Tanezzuft Fm. The upper Tanezzuft Fm. and Akakus Fm. typically contain C. acacensis , a form that is characteristic of the Lower Silurian of Northern Gondwana.

Ordovician chitinozoans are as yet inadequately documented from the western Yangtze Platform, South China. Here we present a systematic study on chitinozoans from a Middle–Upper Ordovician succession at Songliang of Qiaojia, northestern Yunnan, southwestern China. Altogether 34 species of 12 genera are identified from the upper Hungshihyen and the Huadan formations. The top of the Hungshihyen Formation yields typical Early and Middle Ordovician forms, for instance, Lagenochitina obeligis and Belonechitina chenjiawuensis, with the latter only known from the lower Darriwilian in South China, thus suggesting an early Darriwilian age for this interval. The chitinozoans recovered from the Huadan Formation include Lagenochitina prussica and Spinachitina fossensis, both are mainly confined in Katian and sometimes ranging into younger strata. This indicates an age younger than the middle to late Darriwilian previously determined for the Huadan Formation. However, conflicts exist in age assignment of the Huadan Formation based on chitinozoan and other evidence, and further work is required.

Glacial marine deposits (the Waterfall Formation of the Saionia Scarp Group) from northern Sierra Leone, West Africa, correlate with sequences in Guinea and Senegal and indicate a Late Ordovician age. The sediments (150 m in thickness) are laminated mudstones (rhythmites) of alternating fine laminae and lenticular, graded, coarse laminae a few millimetres thick. Dispersed clasts of various rock types occur within the rhythmites, which also locally contain slump structures. Interbedded with the rhythmites and dropstones are turbidites, with sole structures, amalgamated and graded beds. Transport directions are from the north.Deposition from low-density melt-water suspension currents derived from a shelf glacier is suggested for the rhythmites, with the clasts emplaced by iceberg rafting.Underlying the glacial sediments are subarkoses with heavy-mineral laminae and cross-bedded, super-mature quartz arenites attributed to a shallow-water tidal origin. The occurrence of glacial marine sediments in Sierra Leone provides a southwestern boundary to the ice-sheet which is well-documented as covering much of the Sahara and Northwest Africa during Late Ordovician time, and further emphasizes the great area affected by this glaciation.

Understanding of the palaeoecology of Early Palaeozoic shallow-marine communities in sandy habitats is incomplete. Reasons for this include the poor preservation of body fossils and the dominance of Skolithos piperock in sandstones of that age. Cambrian and Ordovician deposits preserving diverse nearshore trace-fossil assemblages are therefore of critical importance for assessing the early evolution of marine ecosystems. The basal part of the Cambro-Ordovician Bynguano Formation of the Mootwingee area (New South Wales, Australia) is a series of interbedded sandstones and mudstones, which were deposited under nearshore conditions. These strata provide an early example of the Arenicolites ichnofacies. Two ichnocoenoses are distinguished in the sandstones of this unit. A 'predepositional' ichnocoenosis, which reflects the benthic community prior to episodes of sand deposition, includes dense aggregations of Rusophycus with rare Planolites. The 'postdepositional' ichnocoenosis is more diverse and includes Thalassinoides, Arenicolites (various types), Monocraterion, Skolithos, Trichichnus , and epichnial grooves. The tiered structure developed in this ichnocoenosis is preserved as a 'frozen tiered profile' and is characterised by a Thalassinoides tier, 10–30 cm in depth, which is cross-cut by Skolithos and Arenicolitesin the middle tier, and by Arenicolites and Trichichnusin the shallowest tier. The pattern of tiering indicates that a complex ecosystem of opportunistic organisms, capable of exploiting shifting substrates, had evolved by the earliest Ordovician. □ Predepositional, postdepositional frozen tier profile, ichnocoenosis, nearshore clastics, RUSOPHYCUS, Cambro-Ordovician, Bynguano Formation, Mootwingee, New South Wales.

Summary Early Silurian reef reconstruction on the Yangtze Platform, in the northern part of the South China Block, is preceded by a combination of regional and global processes. During most of Ashgill time (Late Ordovician), the area was dominated by Wufeng Formation deep water graptolitic black shales. Reefs largely disappeard in the middle of the Ashgill Stage, from the northwestern margin of Cathaysian Land (southeastern South China Block), in advance of the Late Ordovician glaciation and mass extinction, due to regional sea-level changes and regional uplift, unrelated to the mass extinction itselt. Late Ordovician microbial mudmound occurrence is also found in the western margin of the Yangtze Platform, its age corresponding to theDicellograptus complexus graptolite biozone of pre-extinction time. On the Yangtze Platform, a thin, non-reef-bearing carbonate, the Kuanyinchiao Formation (=Nancheng Formation in some sites), thickness generally no more than 1m, occurs near several landmasses as a result of Hirnantian regression. Reappearance of the earliest Silurian carbonates consisting of rare skeletal lenses in the upper part of Lungmachi Formation, are correlated to theacensus graptolite biozone, early Rhuddanian of Shiqian, northeastern Guizhou, near Qianzhong Land. Carbonate sediments gradually developed into beds rich in brachiopods and crinoids in the lower part of Xiangshuyuan Formation, middle Rhuddanian. In the middle part of Xiangshuyan Formation, biostromes, containing abundant and high diversity benthic faunas such as corals, crinoids and brachiopods, show beginnings of reconstruction of reef facies. Substantial reef recovery occurred in the upper part of Xiangshuyuan Formation, lower Aeronian, as small patch reefs and biostromes. During the late Aeronian, carbonate sediments, especially reefs and reef-related facies, expanded on the upper Yangtze Platform, and radiation of reefs occurred in Ningqiang Formation, upper Telychian. The long period of reef recovery, taking several million years, remains difficult to explain, because redistribution of any refugia faunas would be expected to take place soon after the extinction. Reefs and reef-related facies subsequently declined after Telychian time due to regional uplift of the major portion of the Yangtze Platform. Carbonate facies are therefore uncommon in South China during the rest of Silurian time.

The upper Ordovician succession of Jordan was located 60°S, less than 100 km from the Hirnantian ice sheet margin. New graptolite dates indicate glaciation ended in Jordan in the late Hirnantian (persculptus Biozone). The succession records two glacial advances within the Ammar Formation and the subsequent deglaciations. Organic-rich black shales (Batra Formation) form part of the final deglacial transgressive succession that in-filled an existing low stand glacial continental shelf topography. The base of the black shale is coincident with the maximum flooding surface. During transgression, interfluves and sub-basin margins were breached and black shale deposition expanded rapidly across the region. The top of the black shales coincides with peak highstand. The “expanding puddle model” (sensu Wignall) for black shale deposition, adapted for the peri-glacial setting, provides the best explanation for this sequence of events.

We propose a hypothesis in which anoxic conditions were initiated beneath the halocline in a salinity stratified water column; a fresher surface layer resulted from ice meltwater generated during early deglaciation. During the initial stages of marine incursion, nutrients in the monimolimnion were isolated from the euphotic zone by the halocline. Increasing total organic carbon (TOC) and δ13Corg up section indicates the organic carbon content of the shales was controlled mainly by increasing bioproductivity in the mixolimnion (the Strakhov model). Mixolimnion nutrient levels were sustained by a continual and increasing supply of meltwater-derived nutrients, modulated by obliquity changes in high latitude insolation. Anoxia was sustained over tens to hundreds of thousands of years. The formation of black shales on the north Gondwana shelf was little different to those observed in modern black shale environments, suggesting that it was the nature of the Ordovician seas that pre-disposed them to anoxia.

Orphan Basin is a deep-water basin on the continental margin off Newfoundland, which throughout the late Quaternary received proglacial sediment from local ice that crossed the continental shelf. Sediment from more distant sources was transported southward in the Labrador Current as proglacial plumes and in icebergs. Five sedimentary facies related to glacial processes are distinguished in cores recovered from Orphan Basin: hemipelagic sediment, nepheloid-layer deposits (layered mud), beds rich in ice-rafted detritus (IRD), sand and mud turbidites, and glaciogenic debris-flow deposits. IRD-rich beds correspond to periods of intensified iceberg calving, and layered mud, turbidites, and glaciogenic debris-flow deposits with glacial meltwater discharge.

In the Late Wisconsinan, eight periods of meltwater discharge and iceberg calving from the Newfoundland ice sheet are interpreted from the sediment facies in Orphan Basin. These discharges coincide with the terminations of the colder periods of the D–O cycles recorded in Greenland ice cores. The oldest minor meltwater event (27.5–28.5 cal ka) corresponds to the first Late Wisconsinan ice advance across the Grand Banks and NE Newfoundland Shelf. The following three meltwater discharges (23–23.5, 23.8–24.5, and 25–27 cal ka) deposited sand turbidites and glaciogenic debris-flow deposits seaward of Trinity Trough, which was occupied by an ice stream at this time, and mud turbidites in the southern part of the basin derived from a mid-shelf ice margin on the Grand Banks. Four periods of meltwater discharge occurred during the deglaciation and are centered at 15, 18.5, 19.75, and 20.75 cal ka. The youngest is correlated to Heinrich event 1. In the literature, the 18.5 and 20.75 cal ka events have been recorded in multiple glacial settings in the North Atlantic, and therefore, are interpreted as large-scale events of meltwater discharge and iceberg calving, but in Orphan Basin the 19.75 cal ka event is also of similar scale.

This paper deals with fossiliferous shales and sandstones of Ordovician age from WesternLibya. Brachiopods indicate Caradocian and Ashgillian ages at least for part of the section. On ecological grounds it is possible to demonstrate the cold water character of faunal assemblages, related to a periglacial facies. Then this series is introduced on a broader scale into the Cambro-Ordovician of Libya. Good correlations are established between Libya, Morocco and South-Africa, thus offering, through faunal control alone, a striking view of the huge size of glacial phenomena during Upper-Ordovician.

Lungfish (Dipnoi) date back to the Devonian, and some fossil taxa as well as extant African lungfishes are known for their ability to aestivate, tolerating low-oxygen environments associated with seasonal drying. Extant lungfishes are separated into two families: Lepidosirenidae (Protopterus in Africa and Lepidosiren in South America) and Neoceratodontidae (Neocerotadus in Australia). African lungfishes were more geographically and phylogenetically diverse on the continent in the past than they are today, with only 5% of extinct taxa recorded from the sub-Saharan fossil record. Given the sparse record of Lepidosirenidae fossils from continental Africa, any new materials are important for understanding diversification of the clade. Here we describe new lungfish fossils cautiously referable to Protopterus annectens and Protopterus aethiopicus, which are strongly supported sister taxa based on the molecular phylogeny. Specimens were collected from the late Oligocene Nsungwe Formation in the Rukwa Rift Basin (RRB) of southwestern Tanzania. The late Oligocene Nsungwe Formation represents a sequence of continental rift-fill deposits of the Songwe sub-basin of the RRB and is subdivided into the lower Utengule and upper Songwe members. Recovery of such material from the Paleogene of Africa below the equator addresses a sizable gap in the lungfish fossil record. It also expands the Nsungwe Formation fauna that includes invertebrates, alestid fishes, ptychadenid anurans, snakes, and several clades of mammals, deepening paleoecological insights into the late Oligocene record of the continental African interior. At present, P. aethiopicus and P. dolloi have an extensive modern eastern African distribution associated with the rift lakes and a region where extant members of P. annectens are not presently known. Fossil specimens described herein document presence of the clade during Paleogene volcanic activity in the western branch of the Eastern African Rift System.

The extensive matgrounds in Carboniferous‐Permian open‐marine deposits of western Argentina constitute an anachronistic facies, because with the onset of penetrative bioturbation during the early Paleozoic microbial mats essentially disappeared from these settings. Abundant microbially induced sedimentary structures in the Argentinean deposits are coincident with the disappearance of trace and body fossils in the succession and with a landward facies shift indicative of transgressive conditions. Deposits of the Late Carboniferous–Early Permian glacial event are well developed in adjacent basins in eastern Argentina, Brazil, South Africa and Antarctica, but do not occur in the western Andean basins of Argentina. However, the deglaciation phase is indirectly recorded in the studied region by a rapid rise in sea level referred to as the Stephanian‐Asselian transgression. We suggest that an unusual release of meltwater during the final deglaciation episode of the Gondwana Ice Age may have dramatically freshened peri‐Gondwanan seas, impacting negatively on coastal and shallow‐marine benthic faunas. Suppression of bioturbation was therefore conducive to a brief re‐appearance of matground‐dominated ecosystems, reminiscent of those in the precambrian. Bioturbation is essential for ecosystem performance and plays a major role in ocean and sediment geochemistry. Accordingly, the decimation of the mixed layer during deglaciation in the Gondwana basins may have altered ecosystem functioning and geochemical cycling.

We analyzed new occurrences of Azygograptus lapworthi from the Cordillera Oriental, Argentina. The bearer sandstones levels, corresponding to the Acoite Formation, are overlying the deposits, in which the Didymograptellus bifidus Biozone (Lower Ordovician, upper Floian, Fl3) was previously recognized, and are overlain by younger pelitic levels yielding Xiphograptus lofuensis (Middle Ordovician, early Dapingian, Dp2). Previous records from the Central Andean Basin are also reviewed in detail and accurately correlated, allowing us to conclude that the Azygograptus lapworthi Biozone corresponds to the Middle Ordovician (lower Dapingian, Dp1). This biostratigraphic framework documents that the transition between the Lower and Middle Ordovician deposits occurs in the uppermost levels of the Acoite Formation in the Argentine Cordillera Oriental. It is additionally integrated with up to date conodont records to establish a high-resolution regional correlation, with equivalent deposits from the Puna of northwestern Argentina and Cordillera Oriental of Bolivia, and to discuss new insights for global correlation.

Palynomorph assemblages have been recovered from deposits believed to straddle the Ordovician/Silurian boundary, from the upper member of the Salar del Rincón Formation, in the Puna region of north-west Argentina. The palynomorph assemblages are dominated by terrestrial cryptospores, but also contain marine elements (acritarchs, prasinophycean algae and chitinozoans). The cryptospore assemblages are similar in composition to those described from coeval deposits worldwide, suggesting that the producers were cosmopolitan and tolerated a wide range of climatic conditions. They are correlated with the Imperfectotriletes spp. Interval Biozone (sub-biozone α) of the Imperfectotriletes spp.- Laevolancis divellomedia Assemblage Biozone, indicating a Hirnantian (latest Ordovician) age. Acritarchs include late Ordovician species such as Eupoikilosusa striata and Villosacapsula cf. setosapellicula , that coexist with the Llandovery species Dactylofusa estillis. Based on lithological and palynological evidence, an early Llandovery, or a late Hirnantian (post-glacial) age is proposed for the basal part of the upper member of the Salar del Rincón Formation.
