Echinometra is a pantropical sea urchin made famous through studies of phylogeny, speciation, and genetic structure of the Indo-West Pacific (IWP) species. We sequenced 630 bp of the cytochrome oxidase I (COI) mitochondrial gene to provide comparable information on the eastern Pacific and Atlantic species, using divergence between those separated by closure of the Isthmus of Panama 3.1 million years ago (Ma) to estimate dates for cladogenic events. Most recently (1.27-1. 62 Ma), the Atlantic species E. lucunter and E. viridis diverged from each other, at a time in the Pleistocene that sea levels fell and Caribbean coral speciation and extinction rates were high. An earlier split, assumed to have been coincident with the completion of the Isthmus of Panama, separated the eastern Pacific E. vanbrunti from the Atlantic common ancestor. Transisthmian COI divergence similar to that in the sea urchin genus Eucidaris supports this assumption. The most ancient split in Echinometra occurred between the IWP and the neotropical clades, due to cessation of larval exchange around South Africa or across the Eastern Pacific Barrier. Gene flow within species is generally high; however, there are restrictions to genetic exchange between E. lucunter populations from the Caribbean and those from the rest of the Atlantic. Correlation between cladogenic and vicariant events supports E. Mayr's contention that marine species, despite their high dispersal potential, form by means of geographical separation. That sympatric, nonhybridizing E. lucunter and E. viridis were split so recently suggests, however, that perfection of reproductive barriers between marine species with large populations can occur in less than 1.6 million years (Myr).  相似文献

Analysis of the Carboniferous brachiopod zones of eastern Australia shows that they were affected by two major controlling factors - eustatic changes of sea level, and a deterioration (cooling) of climate. Eustatic lowering of sea level caused the removal of the sea from narrow shelf areas and a loss of habitat, and was responsible for the first (late early to middle Visean) of two major episodes of faunal extinction. Subsequent transgression restored a modified warm-water cosmopolitan fauna to the shelf regions. Smaller changes in sea levels were probably responsible for the abrupt disappearance of many species or genera at zonal boundaries and their replacement by a new set of species and genera in succeeding zones. The second major episode of extinction was caused by the lowering of temperature in the latest Visean to early Namurian because of the rapid southerly movement of Australia. The warm water cosmopolitan fauna was eliminated and replaced by the low-diversity Gondwana fauna. Both mechanisms produced particular faunal signatures. The diversity of faunas on either side of the hiatus produced by eustatic lowering of sea level is constant in areas with uniform climatic conditions, and in warm to temperate regions there are low levels of endemism. Faunas associated with a sudden lowering of temperature suffer a significant drop in diversity but are characterized by a high level of endemism.  相似文献

The ecologically important sea urchin Diadema antillarum suffered mass mortalities in 1983, first noted in Panama and then reported from the rest of the Caribbean. We documented the effects of this mortality at two localities on the Atlantic coast of Panama, Punta Galeta and the San Blas Archipelago. At Punta Galeta, affected by the mortality in January 1983, the numbers of D. antillarum changed from an estimated 14,000 per ha in June 1982 to 0.5 per ha in May 1983; by February 1984 they had increased to 38 per ha. In the San Blas, where mass mortality started in April 1983, the number of D. antillarum in permanent quadrats on 8 reefs was reduced by an average of 94.2%. The average reduction in population density measured in transects on nine reefs was 98.9%. Data taken in permanent quadrats on four reefs in 1978, 1979 and 1980 indicate that population fluctuations of D. antillarum are normally much smaller, justifying the labeling of the 1983 event as mass mortality. Size structure of the San Blas populations was also affected; mean test diameter of D. antillarum on four reefs was reduced from 48.6 mm to 25.0 mm. Other echinoids (Echinometra viridis, E. lucunter, Lytechinus variegatus, L. williamsi, Eucidaris tribuloides, Tripneustes ventricosus, Clypeaster rosaceus and Echinoneus cyclostomus) suffered no ill effects at either Galeta or the San Blas; their population densities remained stable or increased. Density determinations of Diadema mexicanum at the island of Taboguilla on the Pacific side of Panama indicate that Diadema mass mortality did not extend to the eastern Pacific. Sea surface temperatures, tidal levels, rainfall and salinity showed no abnormal fluctuations during the time of D. antillarum mass mortality at Galeta, suggesting that mortality was not due to physical stress. The wide geographical spread and species-specificity of the mortality suggest a water-borne pathogen as the most likely causative agent. Recovery of D. antillarum populations is likely to be slow because there are few, if any, unaffected populations in the Caribbean to contribute larvae for the recolonization of depleted areas. The absence of D. antillarum will probably be reflected by changes in the algal, coral and echinoid communities, and by altered patterns of bioerosion.  相似文献

Damselfishes are an important element of the fauna of coral reefs. This study describes spatial patterns in the distribution of 15 species of damselfishes at Lizard Island, northern Great Barrier Reef (GBR). The aim of the work was to identify the spatial scales at which major changes in the composition and abundance of the fauna occurred. These patterns were then compared with previous studies in an attempt to determine if distributions followed general patterns at a range of localities. The assemblage found at Lizard Island was similar to that of reefs in the central GBR. The most important changes in the composition of the fauna occurred among reef zones. Shallow zones (the reef flat and crest) were dominated by herbivorous species while planktivorous and omnivorous species were most abundant in deeper zones (the reef slope). Densities of herbivorous damselfishes in shallow reef zones at Lizard Island averaged 45.5 individuals per 80 m2, a value comparable to densities found in similar zones on reefs in the central and southern GBR and at one locality in the Caribbean. Comparisons of relative distributions suggested that abundant species tend to be widely distributed among zones and habitats, while rare species have restricted distributions at Lizard Island. However, computer simulation of the sampling program suggested that the ability of our study to describe the distribution patterns of rare species was limited, despite intensive sampling. Correlations between breadth of distribution and abundance may have occurred simply because rare species were less likely to be recorded within a transect. Our results suggest that it will be difficult to compare the distribution patterns of species among studies. Furthermore, the interpretation of relative patterns of distribution at a single locality in terms of ecological specialization or partitioning may first require an assessment of the ability of the sampling program to accurately record spatial patterns.  相似文献

At-sea behavior and effects of hydrographic conditions on the pelagic habitat use of South American fur seals (Arctocephalus australis) seasonally inhabiting the surrounding waters of shallow rocky reefs off Punta Mogotes (Mar del Plata, Argentina) were analyzed integrating geographic locations of fur seal groups (FSGs) with coastal hydrographic conditions and behavioral data in a Geographic Information System. Punta Mogotes rocky reefs represent a potentially high quality patch foraging area, crucial to a central place foraging species during their pelagic dispersion at sea. Fur seal behavior at-sea was strongly influenced by hydrographic conditions such us bathymetry, Beafourt sea state and sea surface current direction. Fur seals General Use Area (GUA) was associated with the 10 m isobaths, whereas Critical Use Area (CUA) was almost completely enclosed within the 5 m isobaths. A concentration-dispersion dynamic trend according to sea state was evident (GUA Beafourt ≤3 = 3.3 km2 vs. GUA Beafourt >3 = 1.7 km2), with a “use area displacement” according to sea surface current direction. A general prevalence of long, at-sea resting periods (passive floating was the most frequently performed behavior, and usually for long periods) and a differential occurrence of each behavior associated with Beafourt sea states were detected. During calm seas (Beafourt ≤3), fur seals exhibit passive floating, occupying extended areas, and drifting according to sea surface current direction. With increasing sea states (Beafourt sea state >3), fur seals tended to perform shallow prolonged immersion and directional movements, and concentrated in restricted areas weakly affected by currents. The importance of floating periods at-sea, probably associated with resting and digestion, was interpreted as an energy conserving strategy that would allow an increase overall foraging efficiency. Results suggested that the ability of fur seals to perform certain behaviors that will allow completing physiological process and ultimately determine reproduction and survival success, would be conditioned by the hydrographic regime at foraging areas. This last could be extrapolated to other fur seal species spending long times at-sea, both as part of migration movements or during typical long foraging round trips.  相似文献

Acropora and Porites corals are important reef builders in the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean. Bacteria associated with mucus produced by Porites spp. and Acropora spp. from Caribbean (Punta Maroma, Mexico) and Indo-Pacific (Hoga and Sampela, Indonesia) reefs were determined. Analysis of pyrosequencing libraries showed that bacterial communities from Caribbean corals were significantly more diverse (H', 3.18 to 4.25) than their Indonesian counterparts (H', 2.54 to 3.25). Dominant taxa were Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Cyanobacteria, which varied in relative abundance between coral genera and region. Distinct coral host-specific communities were also found; for example, Clostridiales were dominant on Acropora spp. (at Hoga and the Mexican Caribbean) compared to Porites spp. and seawater. Within the Gammproteobacteria, Halomonas spp. dominated sequence libraries from Porites spp. (49%) and Acropora spp. (5.6%) from the Mexican Caribbean, compared to the corresponding Indonesian coral libraries (<2%). Interestingly, with the exception of Porites spp. from the Mexican Caribbean, there was also a ubiquity of Psychrobacter spp., which dominated Acropora and Porites libraries from Indonesia and Acropora libraries from the Caribbean. In conclusion, there was a dominance of Halomonas spp. (associated with Acropora and Porites [Mexican Caribbean]), Firmicutes (associated with Acropora [Mexican Caribbean] and with Acropora and Porites [Hoga]), and Cyanobacteria (associated with Acropora and Porites [Hoga] and Porites [Sampela]). This is also the first report describing geographically distinct Psychrobacter spp. associated with coral mucus. In addition, the predominance of Clostridiales associated with Acropora spp. provided additional evidence for coral host-specific microorganisms.  相似文献

The involvement of Ca(2+) in the activation of eggs and in the first steps of the embryonic development of several species is a well-known phenomenon. An association between Ca(2+) sources with the fate of the blastopore during embryonic development has been investigated by several authors. Ca(2+) influx mediated by voltage-gated channels and Ca(2+) mobilization from intracellular stores are the major sources of Ca(2+) to egg activation and succeeding cell divisions. Studies on sea urchins embryonic development show that intracellular Ca(2+) stores are responsible for egg activation and early embryogenesis. In the present work we investigated the involvement of extracellular Ca(2+) in the first stages of the embryonic development of the sea urchin Echinometra lucunter. Divalent cation chelators EDTA and EGTA strongly blocked the early embryonic development. Adding to this, we demonstrated the involvement of voltage-gated Ca(2+) channels in E. lucunter embryogenesis since Ca(2+) channel blockers powerfully inhibited the early embryonic development. Our data also revealed that Ca(2+) influx is crucial for embryonic development during only the first 40?min postfertilization. However, intracellular Ca(2+) remains mandatory to embryonic development 40?min postfertilization, seen that both the intracellular Ca(2+) chelator BAPTA-AM and calmodulin antagonists trifluoperazine and chlorpromazine inhibited the first stages of development when added to embryos culture 50?min postfertilization. Our work highlights the crucial role of extracellular Ca(2+) influx through voltage-gated Ca(2+) channels for the early embryonic development of the sea urchin E. lucunter and characterizes an exception in the phylum Echinodermata.  相似文献

The composition, abundance and distribution of euphausiids from the southern part of the Mexican Caribbean Sea (August 1986) were sampled during the ARCOMM I cruise on board the R/V "Justo Sierra" of UNAM. Sampling was done using a Bongo-net (0.5 mm mesh size) performing oblique hauls from 200 m to the surface at 28 stations. Of the total euphausiid numbers, the most abundant species was Stylocheiron carinatum (49%), followed by Euphausia americana (9.8%) and E. tenera with (7.8%). The highest total density and that of the three most abundant species occurred during the night sampling, and probably was related to vertical migration patterns. The Bray-Curtis index revealed three station assemblages, related to the day-night variations of the euphausiid community. Species were distributed mainly in the oceanic area, and were absent in the neritic zones. The local fauna shows a strong affinity for the euphausiid community of the Gulf of Mexico and other areas of the Caribbean Sea. Four species are considered to be new records for the western Caribbean Sea.  相似文献

Abstract

Observations on deep seaweeds (15–50 m) at Punta San Pancrazio, Island of Ischia (Bay of Naples). — Algological research in little known and still well preserved zones of the Bay of Naples have been done to improve our knowledge of underwater flora of the Bay itself and of the southern part of the Tyrrhenian sea. SCUBA diving technique allowed us to detect, namely in the deepest investigated areas, a number of species previously unknown for the Bay of Naples. This research deals only with species found during the summertime, living at depths greater than 15 m.  相似文献

During the joint Chilean-German-Italian Magellan “Victor Hensen” Campaign in November 1994, samples were taken on a cruise of the RV Victor Hensen in order to obtain faunistic information from the Beagle Channel. Peracarida are an important fraction of the macrobenthos and were sampled in high numbers. Using an epibenthic sledge, 104,618 individuals were collected in total, comprising 62,860 Amphipoda, 14,685 Cumacea, 17,992 Isopoda, 7,168 Mysidacea and 1,893 Tanaidacea. To allow comparisons between stations, these numbers were standardized to a 1,000 m trawling distance, yielding about 368,000 individuals from all stations. Peracarida were most abundant at station 1213, southeast of Isla Picton, in the oceanic area close to the eastern entrance of the Beagle Channel (166,361 ind./1,000 m). Generally, stations off the eastern entrance were characterized by a high number of Peracarida. In the Beagle Channel itself, however, the abundance decreased from east to west with a single peak in peracarid number in the channel east of Punta Yámana. Numbers were much lower at the western entrance (792 ind./1,000 m) and even fewer Peracarida were collected in the Magdalena Channel off Punta Sánchez. Lowest numbers were recorded close to the glacier Romanche and west of Isla Picton at two locations. The composition of peracarid crustaceans was analysed in relation to the background of hydrographical and sedimentological differences, nutrient availability, and knowledge of the other associated fauna in the Beagle Channel. The available data lead us to conclude that abundance and composition of peracarid taxa in and south of the Beagle Channel (off the eastern entrance) seem to be influenced mainly by sediment composition and hydrographical characteristics as indicated above. Synopsis Reef fish community composition in three segments of a peninsular rocky shoreline in the Gulf of California was estimated over four periods by visual observation. ‘Point’ and ‘bay’ segments had regular and distinct species compositions over most periods while a ‘middle’ segment was least distinct but consistently had the greatest number of species. Compositional change along the peninsula was least regular during the coldest sea temperature period (April). Mean species turnover between segments was highest between point and bay. Within segments, the point had greater compositional predictable composition (lowest species turnover). When species with regular frequency of encounter were classified into ‘point’, ‘middle’, ‘bay’, and ‘no trend’ groups it was found that comparatively more ‘point’ species had pelagic eggs and comparatively more ‘bay’ species had demersal eggs. Beta diversity of rocky-shore fishes along the physical gradient of the Punta Doble peninsula reflects a transition between exposed and protected rocky shoreline communities. The correlated physical environmental characteristics associated with exposed and protected habitats are discussed in relation to diversity regulation and dispersal strategies in reef fishes.  相似文献

Between 1998 and 2001 we surveyed the benthic macrofauna of the continental shelf and its upper slope in the Colombian Caribbean. The INVEMAR-MACROFAUNA I-II expeditions used a "semi-ballon" net were for 10 minute bottom drags from Punta Gallinas (Guajira) to Arboletes (Antioquia). These covered seven ecological sectors from the Colombian Caribbean: Guajira (GUA), Palomino (PAL), Tayrona (TAY), Magdalena (MAG), Archipiélagos Coralinos (ARCO), Morrosquillo (MOR), and Darié (DAR). We collected 4109 Asteroidea individuals belonging to six orders, 13 families, 26 genera, four subgenera, 35 species and eight subspecies. Luidia barbadensis, Luidia heterozona barimae, Luidia ludwigi scotti, Luidia sarsi elegans, Prionaster elegans, Cheiraster (Cheiraster) planus, Cheiraster (Cheiraster) sepitus, Cheiraster (Barbadosaster) echinulatus, Pseudarchaster gracilis gracilis, Rosaster alexandri, Pteraster acicula, Pteraster militarioides militarioides, Doraster constellatus, Mammaster sigsbeei and Coronaster briareus are first records for the Colombian Caribbean. Luidia sarsi elegans, Marginaster pectinatus, Tamaria halperni and Stephanasterias albula are first records for the south Caribbean and Pterasterpersonatus and Dipsacaster antillensis are first records for the Caribbean sea.  相似文献

We present phylogenetic relationships and phylogeographic patterns of the two species of bulldog bats, genus Noctilio. Using a comprehensive sampling of 118 individuals throughout the species distribution, we investigated the distribution of molecular variation in one nuclear and two mitochondrial markers. Phylogenetic trees do not recover Noctilio albiventris as a monophyletic group and point to three similar‐age intraspecific genetic lineages, suggesting cryptic diversity in this taxon. These lineages correspond to the subspecies previously proposed, and are strongly associated with major river basins in South America. Analyses also suggest a very recent origin for the fishing bat Noctilio leporinus, which probably originates from N. albiventris, with a population expansion corresponding to its invasion in South America. Based on our analysis, the speciation event was dated in the Pleistocene epoch and seems to be associated with the variation of the sea level in the Caribbean islands. The present work indicates how phylogeographic studies support the identification of independent evolutionary lineages, driving new systematic/taxonomic investigations, while at the same time shed light on the role of the Caribbean in shaping Neotropical bat fauna diversity. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, ?? , ??–??.  相似文献

Aim The long‐term stability of coastal ecosystems such as mangroves and salt marshes depends upon the maintenance of soil elevations within the intertidal habitat as sea level changes. We examined the rates and processes of peat formation by mangroves of the Caribbean Region to better understand biological controls on habitat stability. Location Mangrove‐dominated islands on the Caribbean coasts of Belize, Honduras and Panama were selected as study sites. Methods Biological processes controlling mangrove peat formation were manipulated (in Belize) by the addition of nutrients (nitrogen or phosphorus) to Rhizophora mangle (red mangrove), and the effects on the dynamics of soil elevation were determined over a 3‐year period using rod surface elevation tables (RSET) and marker horizons. Peat composition and geological accretion rates were determined at all sites using radiocarbon‐dated cores. Results The addition of nutrients to mangroves caused significant changes in rates of mangrove root accumulation, which influenced both the rate and direction of change in elevation. Areas with low root input lost elevation and those with high rates gained elevation. These findings were consistent with peat analyses at multiple Caribbean sites showing that deposits (up to 10 m in depth) were composed primarily of mangrove root matter. Comparison of radiocarbon‐dated cores at the study sites with a sea‐level curve for the western Atlantic indicated a tight coupling between peat building in Caribbean mangroves and sea‐level rise over the Holocene. Main conclusions Mangroves common to the Caribbean region have adjusted to changing sea level mainly through subsurface accumulation of refractory mangrove roots. Without root and other organic inputs, submergence of these tidal forests is inevitable due to peat decomposition, physical compaction and eustatic sea‐level rise. These findings have relevance for predicting the effects of sea‐level rise and biophysical processes on tropical mangrove ecosystems.  相似文献

A total of 797 specimens of wild adult triatomines, belonging to six species from the entomological collections of the Costa Rican National Biodiversity Institute, was studied from the standpoint of their relative abundance, as reflected by light traps, distribution in the country, seasonal variations and climatic and altitudinal preferences. Triatoma dimidiata was the most abundant species (32.9% of the total specimens), with a very extensive distribution in different ecological zones, being more common between 100 to 400 m above sea level mainly at the end of the dry season. T. dispar was the third in frequency (21.5%), with narrower distribution, more abundant between 600 to 800 m and scarce during the dry season. Panstrongylus geniculatus and P. rufotuberculatus, second and fourth in frequency (22.1% and 15.1%, respectively), were widely distributed on both the Pacific and Caribbean basins, the former being more common between 80 to 270 m all year round and the latter below 800 m mainly during the first semester. Eratyrus cuspidatus which represented only 4.9% of the insects, was also present on both basins mainly below 200 m with a tendency to be scarce during certain months of the year, and was found in all types of ecological zones. Finally, Rhodnius pallescens, the least abundant species (3.6%) was restricted to very humid areas below 20 m, on the north side and Caribbean basin. With the exception of R. pallescens, males were more commonly found than females. Some epidemiological implications related to the six species are discussed.  相似文献

The near-bottom layer of the ocean represents a boundary between two oceanic biotopes (pelagial and benthal), and as a result, the animal populations living in this habitat belong to various diverse ecological groups. There is a profusion of terms to designate the organisms which live near the sea bottom, both in relation to their behaviour and to boundary-layer hydrodynamics. Do the fauna living above the sea bottom form a true community? Should the fauna in this habitat be considered as a true community or a mixed assemblage comprised of benthic and pelagic organisms? Between 1988 and 1996, more than 500 suprabenthic hauls were taken with a modified Macer-GIROQ sledge at 15 sites in the English Channel and the Seine Estuary (5–70 m), at 13 sites on the southern edge of the Cap Ferret Canyon (Bay of Biscay, 350–1100 m), and at 8 sites on the Atlantic seamounts south of the Azores (260–2235 m). This intensive sampling permitted the collection of more than several hundred species and will serve to facilitate discussion concerning the biodiversity of the fauna collected near the sea bottom. This paper proposes that in the estuary, the near-bottom layer is colonized by a mixed assemblage of both pelagic and benthic organisms, while in the coastal and in the bathyal zones, the response to the gradual extinction of light and the decreasing benthic resuspension at near-bottom depths leads to an ecocline.  相似文献

About 95 species of stalked crinoids are now described from 60m to hadal depths, but our knowledge remains far from complete. Depending on which species concept is used, estimates of species richness can be dramatically different. It is necessary to have a homogeneous concept for taxonomic units. The abundance of the crinoid fossil record allows a discussion of the ancestry of deep sea crinoid fauna. Stalked crinoids have a horizontal diversity pattern with three regional centres of high diversity (i.e. western tropical Pacific, western tropical Atlantic and north-eastern Atlantic). Vertical patterns show two faunal strata which vary in importance among provinces. The epibathyal stratum has apparently remained relatively similar in intertropical areas since the Mesozoic. Despite environmental changes related to glaciation since the Middle Miocene, the deepest crinoid fauna (i.e. the deep sea fauna sensu stricto at depths more than 1000 ± 200 m) have a very ancient origin with a dispersion closely related to plate tectonics. The bathyal fauna on hard substrates includes a few living fossils and has a high historical interest.  相似文献

Sea cliff exposures at the head of South Bight on Amchitka Island contain an invertebrate fauna consisting of 24 bivale, 14 gastropod, 4 barnacle, 2 brachiopod, 1 amphineuran, 1 echinoid, 1 annelid and 2 planktonic foraminifer species and various unstudied bryozoans, benthonic foraminifers and ostracodes, as well as bone fragments of marine mammals. With the exception of 4 species of Chlamys, all taxa appear to be living along the Alaskan coastline today.Paleotemperature analyses based on the average size of adult Hiatella arctica, the median of midpoints technique, the extralimital species technique, a biogeographic method, species distribution and coiling ratios of planktonic foraminifers, and oxygen stable isotope ratios give varied values. The extralimital species, biogeographic and oxygen isotope techniques are judged to give the most reliable evidence of paleotemperature at South Bight. These data suggest that mean February sea surface temperature was about 3.9° C and that mean August temperatures were somewhere between 10.0° C and 11.7° C. Present-day mean February temperature at South Bight is 3.9° C and mean August temperature is 10.0° C.The fauna lived in shallow (0–23 m?) water in a sublittoral environment on the open coast. Remains of a few rocky-shore littoral organisms were displaced downslope a short distance where they accumulated with remains of epifaunal, infaunal and neritopelagic elements of the inner sublittoral zone and open ocean planktonic foraminifers. The fauna is most closely comparable to that of the present-day Aleutian Province, and to a lesser degree comparable to that of the Arctic.Astarte bennettii, A. borealis, Diplodonta aleutica, and Liomesus nux are unreported in North Pacific strata older than those of the Einahnuhtan transgression, and Chlamys hanaishiensis amchitkana, C. islandica powersi and C. coatsi middletonensis are unknown from strata younger than those of the Einahnuhtan. However, the almost entirely modern aspect of the fauna, coupled with the absence of Astarte mortonensis-like variants of the Astarte borealis lineage, and radiometric dates on bone and shell material of 130,000 ± 15,000 years, appear to indicate a Kotzebuan age.  相似文献

Aim To assess the correspondence between current avian distributions in the lowlands of northern South America with respect to the hypothesized importance of sea level rise and other events over the past 15 million years on speciation. Location Tropical lowlands of north‐western South America. Methods To establish which bird taxa may have originated in each area of endemism, I examined the ranges of all bird species occurring in the Pacific and the Caribbean lowlands. To determine land and sea distribution during a sea level rise of 100 m in north‐western South America and eastern Central America, I traced the 100 m contour line from the Geoatlas of Georama and the Global 30‐Arc‐Second Elevation Data (GTOPO30) produced by the US Geological Survey. Results During a sea level rise of ~100 m, marine incursions would have occurred from the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Several areas of tropical forest and dry/arid vegetation would have been isolated, currently known as the Darién, Chocó, Nechí, Catatumbo, Tumbesian and Guajiran areas of animal and plant endemism. Main conclusions A large part of the high diversity of forest and nonforest birds and other animals and plants in the Pacific rain forest and the Caribbean woodland likely arose as the result of sea level rises, dispersal and other geological and climatic events.  相似文献
