In this study of the Lough Neagh catchment a relationship has been sought between the loads of dissolved and total silica and the flow of each of the six inflowing rivers. Two of these rivers-the Main and Six Mile Water-carry a higher ratio of dissolved to total silica than do the remaining four rivers due to the geology of the catchment. The multiple regressions of loads in tonnes against river flows in cubic metres show a linear relationship for dissolved but not for total silica. The explanation for this non-linearity has been sought in the river proaies, where the fall for the last 30 m varies from 5 to 25 km depending on the river. The rivers Main and Six Mile Water are the steepest, and linear relationships were obtained in their regressions while the shallowest profile was found in the Blackwater where non-linearity in the multiple regression was obtained. In Lough Neagh the dissolved silica content was gradually reduced from early winter through to springtime by diatom growth and a balance has been drawn up for this utilization. This reduction also compares with the quantity in the diatom crop at maximum based on cell volume measurements. The summer build up of the dissolved silica content of the lough has been shown to be greater than the quantity contributed by the inflowing rivers from late spring to autumn and the data show that the recycling of silica from some 65% of the frustules from the spring crop after its collapse would account for the summer increase.  相似文献

Compared to knowledge about N and P processing in the aquatic continuum of lakes, wetlands and estuaries, knowledge concerning transport and cycling of Si is only fragmentary. Furthermore, Si research in estuaries has mainly been focused on subtidal benthic sediments and uptake and recycling by diatom communities. The biogeochemical cycling of Si in tidal wetlands, which can contain large amounts of Si, has thus far been neglected. We have conducted several whole ecosystem Si mass-balances on a freshwater marsh located in the Schelde estuary (6 tidal cycles, 2 with BSi included). Our measurements show that the freshwater marsh acts as an important source of dissolved Si to the main river (1–18% more export than import, on average 0.114 g m–2). This export is compensated by import of amorphous silica into the marsh (19–55% more import than export). The marsh was shown to act as silica recycler, resupplying biologically available dissolved Si to the estuarine ecosystem. Extrapolations show that during summer and spring months, when dissolved silica is depleted due to diatom growth, almost half of the total dissolved silica load in the main river channel could result from marsh recycling.  相似文献

Organic molecules from known biological sources (biomarkers) that are preserved over geological time are critical tools in the study of past conditions and events on earth. Polar molecules are typically recycled rapidly in marine environments and do not survive burial within aquatic sediments in unambiguously recognizable form. As such, geological biomarkers are formed almost exclusively from precursor biomolecules that have been altered, limiting their utility as paleoproxies. Here, we report that nitrogen‐rich aliphatic long‐chain polyamines (LCPAs), biosynthesized by diatoms in species‐specific assemblages for the precipitation of nanopatterned siliceous cell walls (frustules), are preserved unaltered in the oldest available diatom fossils dating to the Lower Cretaceous (early Albian, 115–110 Ma). We further show that the cumulative LCPA pool accounts for 60% of the total C and 80% of the total N preserved in the Cretaceous age sediments. We suggest that silica glass formation by diatoms constitutes an important preservation mechanism for source‐specific, polar biomolecules, protecting them indefinitely by encapsulation within the silicified frustule. LCPAs are a unique, source‐specific carbon and nitrogen archive of diatom biomass, offering a promising tool for reconstruction of global cycles of carbon and nitrogen over geological timescales.  相似文献

Stratigraphic analyses of the postglacial sediments of Little Round Lake and the recent sediments of two additional southern Ontario lakes were used to compare the relative abundance of fossil diatom frustules to chrysophycean statospores. Relatively few statospores were recorded during eutrophic phases in the lakes' histories such as during periods of anthropogenic activity in the lakes' catch me nt, when diatom frustules were abundant. The increased relative abundance of statospores during the early postglacial in Little Round Lake was attributed to both oligotrophy and a short growing season, conditions that currently exist in many high arctic lakes. From these data it is seen that the ratio of fossil diatom frustules to chrysophycean statospores may provide a useful paleolimnological index of trophic status in temperate lakes. The advantages of this index include its simplicity, the fact that frustules and statospores can be enumerated from the same microscope slides, and that the ratio is independent of sedimentation rates.  相似文献

Lake Waiau, a shallow, heart-shaped water body, is located at 3969 m on the summit plateau of Mauna Kea, a now extinct volcano, on the island of Hawaii. Sediment core from the lake bottom contains remnants of diatom populations spanning a period of more than 5000 years. The presence of diatom frustules in conjunction with an analysis of the major chemical constituents of core and modern sediments provided a unique opportunity to assess changes with time in a highly isolated environment.  相似文献

Natural bacterial populations in samples of water from Loch Leven and Lough Neagh increased the rate of solubilization of frustule silica from an axenic Cyclotella meneghiniana culture, compared with sterile autolysis, at 25C. In the inoculated cultures 50–60% of the silica was solubilized over a period of 30 d. Bacterial populations in Loch Leven water also enhanced the solubilization of silica from non-axenic cultures of Asterionella formosa, Tabellaria flocculosa, Navicula pellicu-losa and C. meneghiniana , compared with control cultures sterilized with mercuric chloride. Similar results were obtained with Lough Neagh populations incubated with A. formosa . In comparison with untreated cells, the treatment of diatom cells with ultra-sonication did not increase the release of silica. Pure cultures of bacteria from Loch Leven water enhanced the release of silica from non-axenic A. formosa and axenic C. meneghiniana compared with sterile control treatments. The variation in the ability of cultures to solubilize the frustule silica appeared to be related to their potential to produce hydrolytic enzymes. Natural populations of Loch Leven and Lough Neagh water bacteria and certain bacterial cultures caused the diatoms to aggregate, which did not enhance the release of silica.  相似文献

Freshwater diatom frustules show special optical properties. In this paper we observed luminescence properties of the freshwater diatom Cyclotella meneghiniana. To confirm the morphological properties we present scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) studies were carried out to visualize the structural properties of the frustules, confirming that silica present in diatom frustules crystallizes in an α‐quartz structure. Study of the optical properties of the silica frustules of diatoms using ultra‐violet‐visible (UV‐vis) spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy confirmed that the diatom C. meneghiniana shows luminescence in the blue region of the electromagnetic spectrum when irradiated with UV light. This property of diatoms can be exploited to obtain many applications in day‐to‐day life. Also, using time‐resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy (TRPL) it was confirmed that this species of diatom shows bi‐exponential decay. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Dissolution of diatom biogenic silica (bSiO2) in estuaries and its control by water salinity and bacteria were investigated using the river euryhaline species Cyclotella meneghiniana as a model. Laboratory-controlled bioassays conducted at different salinities with an estuarine bacteria inoculum showed a faster dissolution of diatom bSiO2 at the lowest salinity where bacteria were the most abundant. However in another experiment, salinity increase clearly enhanced the dissolution of cleaned frustules (organic matter free). The presence of active bacteria might therefore predominate on the effect of salinity for freshly lysed diatoms whereas salinity might rather control dissolution of organic-matter-free frustule remains. Incubation of cultivated diatoms at different protease concentrations revealed that high proteolytic activities had little effect on bSiO2 dissolution at a 1-month scale in spite of an efficient removal of organic matter from the frustules. Altogether it is hypothesized that bacterial colonization increases bSiO2 dissolution by creating a microenvironment at the diatom surface with high ectoproteolytic activity but also via the release of metabolic byproducts since the presence of organic matter seems generally to facilitate diatom bSiO2 dissolution.  相似文献

Lakes Sorell and Crescent are very alike in most physico-chemical features but differ markedly in silica concentrations. The small diatom crops of Sorell have little effect on silica levels which average 12·2 mg l-1 but in Crescent large crops of Diatoma and Synedra maintain low silica concentrations and often cause complete depletion. Silica is supplied to Crescent from Sorell but derivation of a budget is complicated by artificial regulation of Crescent inflow and outflow and lack of sufficient hydrological data. Cultural studies show that silica may frequently limit the Crescent diatom population and that, at least when dissolved silica is scarce, the diatoms may utilise the abundant triptonic silica of the lake.  相似文献

Summary The main drawback in investigations on microbenthos in estuarine regions are formed by the presence of detritus, clay minerals and aggregates of these components. Moreover, counts of benthic diatoms in these areas are also made difficult by the presence of empty frustules. Separation of empty frustules from living benthic diatoms is necessary, because identification of specimens must be carried out with empty frustules. Several techniques have been developed to isolate specific groups of organisms from the sediments.For benthic epipelic diatoms the lens-tissue technique was developed; the technique failed for estuarine sediments. Harvest percentages ranged from about 15 to 75%. A more adequate method was obtained by using density gradient centrifugation with the polymer silica Ludox. With a newly developed technique, which will be published in detail elsewhere, it appeared possible to separate about 87% of the total amount of benthic epipelic as well as epipsammic diatoms from empty diatom frustules, clay minerals and sand particles. The diatom fraction still contained a great deal of detritus which, however, does not disturb the microscopical identification of specimens because it can be oxidized.Some meiobenthic groups (copepods, nematodes) can be isolated quantitatively from sediment samples with the density technique. Attached material on submersed vegetation from 18 lakes was analyzed by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy to identify constituent components. Lake trophic state ranged from oligo-to hyper-eutrophic. Minerals present on 11 submersed taxa included calcite, various salts (KCl and NaCl), silicon dioxide (both biogenic and sand) and hematite. Abundance of deposited material was not related to concentrations of precursor elements in the water column. Resuspended sediments and diatom frustules both contributed to the silica fraction of marl and should be compartmentalized.  相似文献

The biogenic silica (BSi) record has been determined in the sediments of Little Round Lake, Ontario in order to review its postglacial development and study the relationship between BSi and diatoms. BSi concentrations in the sediment stratigraphy were found to correspond for the most part to the trophic history of Little Round Lake. Calculation of accumulation rates for BSi improved the correspondence of the BSi profile to the trophic history. Thus, BSi is a valuable paleoindicator when concentration and flux profiles are considered concurrently. Regression analysis of BSi and diatoms revealed that the concentration of BSi in the sediments was not a simple function of diatom numbers or biovolume, but that factors such as a correction for the rate of dissolution and abundance of chrysophycean scales and cysts were also important.  相似文献

The diatom assemblage associated with the Antarctic sponge Mycale acerata was studied through an analysis of the diatom frustule and pigment concentrations in both the sponge ectosome and choanosome. Sponges were sampled weekly from November 2001 to February 2002 at Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica, at a depth of 25–35 m. The most abundant diatoms were Porannulus contentus, Fragilariopsis curta, Thalassiosira cf. gracilis, T. perpusilla and Plagiotropis sp. High abundances of P. contentus were found on the sponge ectosome up to the beginning of November, before the ice melted, while later frustules were incorporated inside, indicating that P. contentus lives epibiontically on M. acerata and represents a potential food source for the sponge. The presence of other diatom species was mainly related to the summer phytoplankton bloom. The sponge incorporates diatoms from the water column and utilises them as a food source, accumulating frustules inside the choanosome. The lack of planktonic diatom frustules at the beginning of the summer indicates that they are expelled or dissolved during the cold season.  相似文献

Biogenic silica concentration (BSi) in sediment cores from the Great Lakes is evaluated as an estimate of siliceous microfossil abundance. A significant linear relationship was found between measured BSi and diatom valve abundance for sediment cores from the Bay of Quinte, Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior and between measured BSi and diatom biovolume for Lake Erie, Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior but not for Lake Ontario. Diatom silica predicted from diatom species abundance and an estimated silica content per cell in the Lake Erie cores accounted for 117% and 103% of measured BSi, respectively. By contrast, predicted diatom silica could only account for 28% of measured BSi in the Lake Michigan core and only 25% in the Lake Superior core. A few large diatoms with a large silica content per cell comprised a major portion of predicted diatom silica in all cores. The discrepancy between chemically measured BSi and the silica predicted from diatoms in the Lake Michigan and Lake Superior cores was partially due to the inability of the regression model, used to estimate diatom silica content, to account for different degrees of silicification in the diatom asemblages from the more dissolved silica rich Lake Michigan and Lake Superior.  相似文献

Diatoms are ubiquitous organisms in aquatic environments and are estimated to be responsible for 20–25 % of the total global primary production. A unique feature of diatoms is the silica wall, called the frustule. The frustule is characterized by species-specific intricate nanopatterning in the same size range as wavelengths of visible and ultraviolet (UV) light. This has prompted research into the possible role of the frustule in mediating light for the diatoms’ photosynthesis as well as into possible photonic applications of the diatom frustule. One of the possible biological roles, as well as area of potential application, is UV protection. In this review, we explore the possible adaptive value of the silica frustule with focus on research on the effect of UV radiation on diatoms. We also explore the possible effect of the frustules on UV radiation, from a theoretical, biological, and applied perspective, including recent experimental data on UV transmission of diatom frustules.  相似文献

Diatoms are a major group of phytoplankton that account for approximately 40% of the ocean carbon fixation and the vast majority of biogenic silica production through the construction of their cell walls (termed frustules). These frustules accumulate and are partially preserved in the ocean sediments. Diatom growth and nutrient utilization in high‐nitrate, low‐chlorophyll regions of the world’s oceans are mostly regulated by iron availability. Diatoms acclimate to iron limitation by decreasing cell size. The associated increase in surface area‐to‐volume ratio and decrease in diffusive boundary layer thickness may improve nutrient uptake kinetics. In parallel, cellular silicon (Si) contents are elevated in iron‐limited diatoms relative to nitrogen (N) and carbon (C). Variations in degree of silicification and nutritional requirements of iron‐limited diatoms have been hypothesized to account for higher cellular Si and/or lower cellular N and C, respectively. However, in some diatoms, frustule silicification does not significantly change when cells are iron‐limited. Instead, changes in the Si‐containing valve surface area relative to volume within these diatoms is hypothesized to be responsible for the variations in the cellular Si : N and Si : C ratios. In particular, some examined iron‐limited pennate diatoms have reduced widths relative to their lengths (i.e. lower length‐normalized widths, LNW) compared to iron‐replete cells. In the pennate diatom Fragilariopsis kerguelensis, the mean LNWs of valves preserved in sediments throughout the Southern Ocean (a well‐characterized iron‐limited region) is positively correlated with satellite‐derived, climatological net primary productivity in the overlying waters. Because of the specific morphological changes in pennate diatom frustules in response to iron availability, the valve morphometerics (e.g. LNWs) can potentially be used as a diagnostic tool for iron‐limited diatom growth and relative changes in the Si : N (and Si : C) ratios in extant diatom assemblages as well as those preserved in the sediments.  相似文献

Copepods belong to the dominant marine zooplankton taxa and play an important role in particle and energy fluxes of the marine water column. Their mandibular gnathobases possess tooth-like structures, so-called teeth. In species feeding on large proportions of diatoms these teeth often contain silica, which is very probably the result of a coevolution with the siliceous diatom frustules. Detailed knowledge of the morphology and composition of the siliceous teeth is essential for understanding their functioning and their significance in the context of feeding interactions between copepods and diatoms. Based on analyses of the gnathobases of the Antarctic copepod Rhincalanus gigas, the present study clearly shows, for the first time, that the silica in the siliceous teeth features large proportions of crystalline silica that is consistent with the mineral α-cristobalite and is doped with aluminium. The siliceous structures have internal chitinous fibre networks, which are assumed to serve as scaffolds during the silicification process. The compact siliceous teeth of R. gigas are accompanied by structures with large proportions of the elastic protein resilin, likely reducing the mechanical damage of the teeth when the copepods feed on diatoms with very stable frustules. The results indicate that the coevolution with diatom frustules has resulted in gnathobases exhibiting highly sophisticated composite structures.  相似文献

Biogeochemical silica mass balances in Lake Michigan and Lake Superior   总被引:4,自引:3,他引:1  
Silica budgets for Lake Michigan and Lake Superior differ in several respects. Mass balance calculations for both lakes agree with previous studies in that permanent burial of biogenic silica in sediments may be only about 5% of the biogenic silica produced by diatoms. Because dissolution rates are large, good estimates of permanent burial of diatoms can not be obtained indirectly from the internal cycle of silica (silica uptake by diatoms and subsequent dissolution) but must be obtained from the sediment stratigraphy. The annual net production of biogenic silica in Lake Michigan requires 71% of the winter maximum silica reservoir which must be maintained primarily by internal cycling in this large lake whereas the comparable silica demand in Lake Superior is only 8.3%. The greater silica demand in Lake Michigan is the result of phosphorus enrichment which has increased diatom production. It is hypothesized that steady-state silica dynamics in Lake Michigan were disrupted by increased diatom production between 1955 and 1970 and that a new steady state based on silica-limited diatom production developed after 1970. Mass balance calculations for Lake Michigan show in contrast with previous work that the hypothesized water column silica depletion of 3.0 g · m–3 could have occurred even though 90% or more of the biogenic silica production is recycled.  相似文献
