Theory predicts that it should often be in the best interests of gregarious animals to repair social bonds damaged by within-group conflict. Indeed, reconciliation in many primates takes the form of affiliative behavior occurring shortly after a conflict. Here we inquired whether reconciliation also occurs among spotted hyenas ( Crocuta crocuta ), gregarious carnivores whose social lives share much in common with those of cercopithecine primates. In a large group of free-living hyenas in Kenya, we used focal animal observations to monitor rates at which various affiliative behaviors occurred before and after dyadic aggressive interactions. An affiliative behavior was identified as having a conciliatory function only if it occurred more frequently after than before fights, and if it was also associated with reduced rates of aggression between former opponents during the post-conflict interval. Of all affiliative behaviors monitored, only two types satisfied both these criteria: greeting behavior and non-aggressive approach. Over 72% of conciliatory behaviors occurred within the first five minutes after a fight, and hyenas reconciled after 14.6% of 698 fights. Mean conciliatory tendency (CT) for individual hyenas was 11.3%. Hyenas exhibited higher CTs when they were recipients (victims) of aggression than when they were aggressors, and they showed higher CTs in interactions with non-kin than with kin. Conciliatory tendencies did not vary with age–sex classes of opponents or with rank distance between opponents . Conciliatory tendency in spotted hyenas fell at the low end of the CT range observed among primates.  相似文献

Territorial behaviour of a clan of spotted hyaenas, Crocuta crocuta, was investigated in the Kruger National Park over a period of 27 months. These hyaenas were highly territorial, spending ? of their total activities on territory patrol by scent-marking intensively and monitoring 64 marking posts, particularly in border regions. Females, the more philopatric sex, were most active in territory defence. Local intensity of territorial activities by residents within their 130-km2 territory was directly proportional to intrusion pressure by neighbours. When clan size was reduced, the ability to defend disputed land declined and larger neighbouring clans appropriated parts of the territory. We propose a relationship between resource distribution, intrusion pressure and territory defence.  相似文献

Female Spotted hyaenas mimic the male in the possession of a peniform and highly erectile clitoris and false scrotum. Sex hormones have been assayed in the blood plasma, gonads and adrenal glands of male and female Spotted hyaenas and in the blood plasma of Striped and Brown hyaenas. Although the testicular concentration of testosterone greatly exceeds that of the ovaries in Spotted hyaenas, there is no significant difference between the sexes in the mean plasma levels of this hormone, or of the other androgen assayed, andro-stenedione. In contrast, male Brown and Striped hyaenas have far higher plasma concentrations of testosterone than females.
Testosterone levels in twin female Spotted hyaena foetuses were similar to the mean for adult females and it is suggested that high foetal androgen levels are responsible for the appearance of the male sexual facies in adult female Spotted hyaenas. The high plasma androgen levels recorded in adult females may also be associated with their aggression and dominance of males.  相似文献

In the Cervidae, sexual dimorphism in body mass, armament and structure of the breeding pelage appears to be, as in African antelope, a curvilinear function on openness of habitat. Sexes converge in characteristics towards male-like monomorphism in deer that hide in dense cover, as well as in gregarious, cursorial dwellers in open terrain. Relative antler mass correlates with weight dimorphism. The most cursorial species, the wapiti ( Cervus elaphus canadensis ) and the caribou ( Rangifer farandus ) converge towards male monomorphism, with the wapiti showing strong reduction in weight dimorphism (compared to red deer C. elaphus hippelaphus ), and structure of the breeding pelage, but not in weaponry. Male and female caribou converge strongly in the structure of the breeding pelage, less so in weaponry, and least in weight dimorphism; antlers in female caribou are thus comparable to horns in male-like females of plains bovids. In weight dimorphism, wapiti have almost reached the level of the African grazing antelopes of the tribes Alcelaphini and Orygini. Sexual dimorphism is maximal in mixed and concentrate feeders from semi-open landscapes.  相似文献

All hyaenas scent mark their territories by smearing grass stems with paste from their subcaudal scent glands and by depositing faeces at latrines, but they adopt different strategies in terms of how they disperse these scent marks in their territories. For example, brown hyaenas living in the southern Kalahari deposit pastes and latrines throughout the whole of their territory, while spotted hyaenas living in the Ngorongoro Crater of East Africa place their scent marks strictly along the territorial borders. We have argued elsewhere (Gorman & Mills, 1984) that these different strategies are not species-specific but are instead adaptive responses to local conditions. Here, we use data from a population of spotted hyaenas, living in small clans and large territories in the Kalahari, to test the hypothesis that hinterland marking is a response to the problem of marking a very large territory with a limited amount of scent and within a limited time budget.  相似文献

The feeding behaviour of the Talek clan of spotted hyaenas in the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, was monitored continuously for 7 years. Talek hyaenas adapted to large temporal variations in prey abundance by being opportunistic predators. During the first half of the year, the hyaenas fed on resident ungulates, and their diet consisted mainly of topi and Thomson's gazelles. Upon arrival of the migratory herds of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti, Talek hyaenas switched to feeding on the wildebeest which provided them with a superabundance of food for about 3 months. After the migratory animals returned to the Serengeti, Talek hyaenas experienced a period of reduced prey abundance due to the temporary dispersion of resident ungulates. At this time hyaenas hunted the few remaining wildebeest, and also increased their use of the remaining resident animals. Although Talek hyaenas were generally opportunistic in their feeding behaviour, they did exhibit clear dietary preference for larger prey species, particularly wildebeest. Finally, carrion comprised only 5% of the biomass consumed by Talek hyaenas, the lowest proportion of carrion in the diet of any Crocuta population studied to date.  相似文献

A homologous radioimmunoassay system developed for humans was used to measure prolactin concentrations in spotted hyaenas. Concentrations of prolactin showed a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in lactating females, which is consistent with the infrequent suckling pattern of this species. This lack of hyperprolactinaemic conditions during lactation may explain the ability of females to resume reproductive activity soon after the loss of a litter, or even during lactation. Prolactin concentrations did not increase significantly during dispersion in male spotted hyaenas. This conforms to the pattern observed for cortisol, but differs from that for androgen, which fluctuates significantly with social suppression. Although comparative data from other species provide some circumstantial evidence for hyperprolactinaemic conditions during male dispersal, no obvious deductions regarding the recorded inverse relationship between prolactin and cortisol concentrations in mature males could be made.  相似文献

Differences in plasma testosterone and androstenedione concentrations in male spotted hyaenas belonging to various reproductive and social categories 4 clans resident in South Africa and Botswana suggest that central-immigrant males have the highest concentrations of androgens, reflecting their roles as mating males. Social inhibition of reproductive function may occur in other males. A reversal in the ratio of testosterone: androstenedione occurs at puberty in most individuals, testosterone becoming the dominant hormone, especially in males that have procured mating rites. Cubs of either sex had low testosterone concentrations, except for a 4-day-old male that displayed adult concentrations, which were accompanied by a temporary testicular descent. Plasma testosterone concentrations in females largely reflected ovarian activity and showed no correlation with androstenedione concentrations. Female cubs had androstenedione concentrations significantly higher than those in all other social categories except for the central-immigrant males. The androgen profiles presented here suggest that the key to the behavioural dominance of female spotted hyaenas over males may lie with the neonatal developmental stages, rather than with the androgen patterns of adult animals.  相似文献

Nepotism is widespread among parents and offspring, and is typically associated with fundamental asymmetries; parents can usually do more to help their offspring than vice versa, and the cost of a given nepotistic behavior is usually less for parents than for offspring. This may not be so among spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta); sires never achieve social rank equal to that of their cubs, to whom they provide no obvious paternal care. Nepotism by sires towards their cubs is thus socially constrained. However, the higher social status of cubs might offset cubs’ developmental disadvantages and permit nepotistic treatment of sires by offspring. We therefore sought to determine whether the interactions among spotted hyena cubs and adult males were influenced by kinship, using long‐term observations from one clan of spotted hyenas. Sires exhibited no overt nepotism towards their cubs in most behaviors, but they did associate more closely with their daughters than with unrelated control females. Sires also associated more closely with their daughters than with their sons, with whom they associated no more closely than they did with unrelated control males. Cubs favored their sires by directing less intense aggression towards them than towards unrelated control males. Cubs of both sexes also associated more closely with their sires than with control males after the cubs were independent of the clan's communal den. Although sires evidently recognize their offspring, paternal nepotism by sires towards their cubs is weaker than filial nepotism by cubs towards their sires. The small size and immaturity of cubs thus appear to be weaker constraints on nepotism than is the low social status of their sires.  相似文献

Histological evidence suggests that the spotted hyaena ( Crocuta crocuta ) is polyoestrous, and that corpora lutea are persistent and are not visible after one birth interval. Multiple generations of corpora lutea therefore represent recurring 'infertile' oestrous cycles. Plasma oestradiol-17β and progesterone concentrations fluctuate concurrently, with the highest concentrations occurring during pregnancy. The reduced mean oestradiol-17β concentrations observed during lactation suggest reduced ovarian steroid secretion during this reproductive phase. However, signs of follicular activity in some lactating females indicate that endocrine activity may still occur during lactation. The presence of multiple 'infertile' cycles and some degree of follicular development during lactation explains the ability of this species to fall pregnant soon after the loss of a litter, and provides a mechanism for overcoming the low recruitment rate so characteristic of this species.  相似文献

Spotted hyenas ( Crocuta crocuta ) are gregarious carnivores that defend group territories against encroachment by neighboring conspecifics. Here we monitored the behavior of members of one clan of free-ranging spotted hyenas during border patrols, 'wars' with neighboring clans, and other interactions with alien intruders, to document differences between the sexes in territorial behavior in this species. We also examined the possibility that the probability or rate of attack on alien hyenas encountered within the clan's territory would vary with the sex of the intruders. Initiation and leadership of most cooperative territorial behaviors were by adult female clan members, although border patrols were occasionally conducted by groups composed exclusively of resident males. The vast majority of alien intruders into the territory of the study clan were males. Resident females were more likely to attack intruding females than intruding males, but hourly rates of aggression directed by females towards aliens did not vary with intruder sex. Resident males were more likely than resident females to attack alien males, and resident males directed significantly higher hourly rates of aggression towards intruding males than females. Although female leadership in most cooperative territorial behaviors distinguishes spotted hyenas from many mammalian carnivores, other sex differences in the territorial behavior of spotted hyenas resemble those documented in other gregarious predators. Sex differences observed in hyena territoriality are consistent with the hypothesis that male and female clan members derive different selective benefits from advertisement and defense of group territories.  相似文献

Enzyme immunoassays (EIA) that measure faecal testosterone metabolites (fTM) are useful tools to monitor gonadal activity. The aim of this study was to validate an “in-house” epiandrosterone EIA to monitor fTM in spotted hyenas. FTM were characterised in a male and a female hyena that each received an injection of 3H-testosterone. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses revealed a cluster of highly polar enzyme-hydrolysable hormone metabolite conjugates. We performed hydrolysis using β-glucuronidase to deconjugate metabolites and improve sensitivity of the assay. Because β-glucuronidase from Helix pomatia has been reported to bias testosterone measurements in some species, we compared the enzymatic activity of the commonly used β-glucuronidase extracted from H. pomatia with the same enzyme from Escherichia coli. Our results showed that β-glucuronidases from both sources produced similar results from spotted hyena faeces. We therefore hydrolysed samples with H. pomatia enzymes. HPLC analyses also demonstrated that following hydrolysis the epiandrosterone EIA measured significant amounts of immunoreactive metabolites corresponding to radiolabelled metabolites in both sexes. Additionally, HPLC and GC-MS analyses confirmed the presence of epiandrosterone in faeces of spotted hyenas. The biological relevance of the epiandrosterone EIA was validated by demonstrating (1) a significant increase in fTM levels in response to a testosterone injection within 16 h, (2) no biological responsiveness to an adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) injection and (3) significant differences in fTM levels between juvenile males and adult immigrant males in a free-ranging wild population. Our results clearly demonstrate that the epiandrosterone EIA is a reliable non-invasive method to monitor gonadal activity in spotted hyenas.  相似文献

Spotted hyaenas Crocuta crocuta were once considered mere scavengers; however, detailed research revealed that they are very efficient predators. Information on what spotted hyaenas actually prefer to prey on and what they avoid is lacking, as well as the factors that influence prey selection. Data from 14 published and one unpublished study from six countries throughout the distribution of the spotted hyaena were used to determine which prey species were preferred and which were avoided using Jacobs' index. The mean of these values for each species was used as the dependent variable in multiple regression, with prey abundance and prey body mass as predictive variables. In stark contrast to the rest of Africa's large predator guild, spotted hyaenas do not preferentially prey on any species. Also surprisingly, only buffalo, giraffe and plains zebra are significantly avoided. Spotted hyaena most prefer prey within a body mass range of 56–182 kg, with a mode of 102 kg. The dietary niche breadth of the spotted hyaena is similar to that of the lion Panthera leo , and the two species have a 58.6% actual prey species overlap and a 68.8% preferred prey species overlap. These results highlight the flexible and unselective nature of spotted hyaena predation and are probably a reason for the species' success throughout its range, despite a large degree of dietary overlap with lions.  相似文献
