To examine whether there were gender differences in the sino-atrial node (SAN), the authors investigated the gender difference in the SAN using monkey hearts by direct chemical analysis from a viewpoint of element contents. The used rhesus and Japanese monkeys consisted of 30 males (average age = 6.5 ± 7.5 years) and 30 females (average age = 12.2 ± 10.3 years), ranging in age from newborn to 30 years. The SAN tissues were removed from the anatomical position of monkey hearts and were confirmed by means of histological observation. After ashing with nitric acid and with perchloric acid, element contents of the SANs, such as Ca, P, S, Mg, Zn, Fe, and Na, were determined by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. In addition, gender differences in the right atrial walls, left ventricular walls, mitral valves, and left coronary arteries of monkeys were also investigated as controls. It was found that the P content was significantly higher in females than in males in the SANs of monkeys, but the other six element contents, Ca, S, Mg, Zn, Fe, and Na, were not significantly different between males and females in the SANs of monkeys. Regarding the P content, a similar finding was also obtained in both the right atrial walls and the left ventricular walls of monkeys, but it was not obtained in the mitral valves and the left coronary arteries of monkeys. The P content of tissue is mostly determined by the nucleic acid (DNA and RNA) content and the phospholipid content of tissue. Nucleic acids in the cell nucleus and the cytosol, and phospholipids in the cell membrane are all indicators of metabolically active cells. It is reasonable to presume that the P content in the SAN indicates the active cell density, namely, the number of active cells per volume. Therefore, there is a possibility that the active cell density of the SAN is significantly higher in females than in males.  相似文献

We evaluated blood samples obtained from 80 free-ranging healthy capuchins (Cebus cay and C. nigritus) to establish hematological reference values and to assess the influence of sex and age on them. We caught the monkeys in the Paraná River region of Southern Brazil via manual or automatic traps. We anesthetized them intramuscularly with 3.6 mg/kg tiletamine/zolazepam hydrochlorides. After physical examinations, we divided the sample according to sex and age: 26 females (13 adults and 13 juveniles) and 54 males (27 adults and 27 juveniles). We collected blood and determined hematological values via traditional published methods. We analyzed data via 2-way ANOVA to test the effect of sex, age, and interactions between the 2 factors. The packed-cell volume was higher in adult males and the numbers of white blood cells and lymphocytes were higher in juveniles. There is no other significant difference.  相似文献

The electrocardiograms of 157 healthy Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata), covering a wide range of ages in both sexes, were recorded under light pentobarbital (Nembutal) anesthesia. Although results were generally similar to those reported for other macaque species, some quantitative differences were observed.The heart rate was about 160 per minute in all monkeys examined; the P-Q interval was 0.11±0.06 sec.; the duration of QRS was 0.04±0.01 sec.; the Q-T interval was 0.24±0.06 sec. The mean axis of QRS was +59° and the pattern of the QRS complex was qR type in most cases.The comparison with the human electrocardiogram shows that the heart rate ofM. fuscata is about twice that of man, while the P-Q, QRS, and Q-T intervals were about one-half of those found in human subjects. In the monkey, however, the P wave was sharp and the T wave flat.In order to estimate the effect of anesthesia on the electrocardiogram, the records of several monkeys before, during, and after intravenous administration of barbiturates were compared. Although some animals showed extrasystoles after barbiturate was administered, generally no essential changes were noted in the records, except for the retardation of the rate and proportional prolongation of intervals.This work was presented at the 10th Annual Meeting of the Primate Research Association held in Inuyama, March 13, 1966.  相似文献

Various hematological examinations were performed on a total of 208 Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata). One hundred and fifty-eight of the monkeys were originally from different habitats in the western part of Japan, where they existed as free-ranging animals. The remaining 50 monkeys were kept in an open-enclosure for about one year. Laboratory examinations on blood specimens included the following; the erythrocyte and leukocyte counts, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, the specific gravity of the blood and plasma, protein concentration of the plasma, SGO-T, SGP-T, A/G ratio and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Results were similar to those reported for otherMacaca species. When the data reported here was compared with the known values for man, the Japanese monkey showed lower values for the erythrocyte count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, and the specific gravity of the blood. Higher values were shown for the leukocyte count and SGO-T activity, with a wider overall range of variation.  相似文献

Although reports of many clinical hepatic tests have been published, modifications of methods will be needed in applying them to the monkey because of differences in metabolism, technical difficulties in obtaining blood serum, and the limited volume of fluids which can be administered. The BSP test, one of the most sensitive methods used in clinical medicine, was examined in order to apply it to the Japanese monkey. It is assumed that BSP plasma concentration in the normal healthy Japanese monkey is less than 1.5 mg per 100 ml 30 minutes after dye injection at the rate of 10 mg per kg body weight. Over-retention of BSP was detected in the monkeys affected with experimentally induced liver damage.  相似文献

The average coefficient of relationship within troops of the Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata) is .1667±.0433; this corresponds to anF ST between troops of .0935±.0277. The estimate is based on polymorphic variation at 12 blood protein loci in a sample of about 1,500 individuals distributed over 33 troops. The average coefficient of relationship among adult females (the sedentary sex) is .1886±.0670 and that among adult males (immigrants) is .1067±.0382. The difference, though not statistically significant, is in the direction expected from the observed sex asymmetry in dispersal. We give an approximate formula for the coefficient of relationship between specified relatives. The coefficient of relationship in the Japanese monkey is compared with corresponding estimates in five other terrestrial primate species and in tribal man. It is suggested that the best informed guess of the average coefficient of relationship within bands of Pleistocene man may have been about 10 to 15%. This estimate is relevant to the possibility of the evolution of altruism in our ancestors by group selection.  相似文献

The average frequencies of communicative behavior, social behavior, and social encounters (inter-individual proximity within three meters) per hour for a monkey were obtained in their natural habitat by tracing several adult males and females of a Japanese monkey troop living in the Koshima islet. The spatial distribution patterns and the density of troop members within the expanse of the troop at any moment were investigated by tracing several adult femals. Frequency distributions of the monkeys found within five and 10 meters were compared with a Poisson distribution. The frequencies of social encounters and of social interactions of Japanese monkeys were distinctly low, except between mothers and their offspring. The density of monkeys within the expanse of the troop at any moment was very low. Both aggressive behavior and inter-individual proximity (within three meters) were distinctly low when monkeys were foraging for natural food. An avoiding mechanism among troop members plays an important role in maintaining the social structure of these Japanese monkeys. This mechanism works in two ways: each individual does not approach others too closely; the density of monkeys within the expanse of the troop is low at all times.  相似文献

The zinc content in whole blood and serum was determined in 239 healthy males and 217 healthy females by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The mean level of zinc obtained in whole human blood from males was 607.0 +/- 105.3 micrograms/100 ml and in females 585.2 +/- 122.9 micrograms/100 ml. The mean level of zinc in serum was 116.6 +/- 55.2 micrograms/100 ml and 105.2 +/- 66.9 micrograms/100 ml in males and females respectively. The zinc concentration in whole blood and serum in males proved to be slightly higher than in females though the difference is not statistically significant. For the males a positive correlation was found between age and the zinc level in whole blood and serum; this is only statistically significant in whole blood. In females, the zinc level in whole blood showed a positive correlation with age which was not statistically significant, while in serum this correlation was negative and statistically significant.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata, is recognized as the monkey species inhabiting the northernmost area in the world, and thus likely to possess unique fat-depositing mechanisms to resist cold weather in winter. We report that obese females are present in the Wakasa group of Japanese monkey reared in an open enclosure of the Primate Research Institute, Kyoto University. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eight of 12 females were categorized as obese, showing percentage body fat of over 22%. The levels of serum leptin (mean +/- SD, 4.9 +/- 2.3 ng/ml) measured in these obese monkeys were significantly higher than those of non-obese peers of the same group (n = 4; 1.2 +/- 0.5 ng/ml) and another Japanese monkey group (Takahama, n = 14; 0.8 +/- 0.25 ng/ml); however, serum levels of adiponectin, insulin, glucose, hemoglobin A1c, and fructosamine did not differ between obese and non-obese monkeys. Few serum lipid parameters such as triglyceride and cholesterol showed lower levels in obese monkeys than their non-obese peers. CONCLUSIONS: These results show that these obese monkeys in the Wakasa group have not developed obesity-related diseases/disorders such as diabetes. In the Wakasa group, the frequency of obese individuals was high in some maternal lineages, suggesting that genetic factors responsible for obesity may have been inherited in these lineages.  相似文献

13,14-Dihydro-17-phenyl-18,19,20-trinor-PGF-isopropyl ester (latanoprost) is a new prostaglandin drug developed for the treatment of glaucoma. In clinical trials a daily dose of 1.5 μg is effective in reducing the intraocular pressure. In toxicological studies doses from 2 μg/eye to 100 μg/eye have been used in various species. This paper reports the development and validation of a radioimmunoassay of latanoprost acid (PhXA85) and its application to toxicokinetic studies performed in monkeys. An antiserum was raised in rabbits by immunization with PhXA85 coupled to BSA at the carboxylic acid by the mixed anhydride method. The antibody titre was found to be about 1:2000 to 1:3000. The cross-reactivity with 13,14-dihydro-15(R,S)-17-phenyl-trinor-PGF, 13,14-dihydro-15(S)-17-phenyl-trinor-PGF, dinor-PhXA85, 17-phenyl-trinor-PGF, latanoprost and PGF was 46.4, 4.2, 7.6, 2.2, 0.1 and 0.039%, respectively. The intra-assay precision was between ± 7.7 and 11.7% (CV) at the level of 320 pg/ml and ±8.3 and 9.7% with 1280 pg/ml in plasma samples from man, monkey, rat and aqueous humour from human and rabbit. Similarly, the intra-assay accuracy varied between 95.9 and 102.5% and 89.0 and 109.0% for the low and high standards, respectively. The inter-assay precision and accuracy were between ±6.0 and 13.4% and 91.0 and 92.8% in the monkey plasma samples. The limit of detection was 3 pg/tube or 30 pg/ml. In a long-term study, the acid of latanoprost was rapidly cleared from plasma in monkeys treated with eye drops of latanoprost (2 × 3 μg/day) over a period of 1 year.  相似文献

多囊卵巢综合征(PCOS)是临床上常见的一种内分泌失调性疾病,也是造成无排卵性不孕的重要原因。对多囊卵巢综合征动物模型的研究有10余年,迄今尚未建立起较为理想的模型动物。该研究的目的在于构建猕猴多囊卵巢综合征动物模型,并分析该模型动物的一些主要生殖特性。将6只成年雌性猕猴(6~10a)平均分成2组:PCOS模型组和对照组。模型组动物的建立方法是:在月经周期的第1、3、5天,分别皮下注射丙酸睾丸酮一次,剂量为3.5mg/kg体重;接着在第7、9、11天,分别肌注人绒毛膜促性腺激素一次,剂量是350IU/kg体重;连续注射2个月经周期。对照组动物注射生理盐水。结果显示:PCOS模型组动物呈现出高血清LH和T,分别为(5.35±0.17)IU/L和(7.58±0.14)ng/mL,而且血清LH/FSH值(5.35/1.30=4.12);模型组动物血清FSH、E2和P的含量与对照组无显著差异。腹部B超扫描结果提示,模型组动物卵巢多囊化。对两组动物进行超排处理后,模型组动物卵巢呈明显的过刺激现象,模型组动物胚胎体外培养的囊胚率为23.53%,显著低于对照组(66.67%)(P<0.05),即用丙酸睾丸酮联合人绒毛膜促性腺激素,能够建立PCOS猕猴模型,该模型动物的一些主要生殖特性与人类PCOS相似。  相似文献

The changes in levels of peripheral major lymphocyte subsets were monitored with 10 adult cynomolgus monkeys (5 females and 5 males) during the 9 weeks after immunization with chick type-II collagen in Freund's complete adjuvant. Three females and 3 males developed overt arthritis determined by swelling of small joints and increase of plasma alkaline phosphatase as well as C-reactive protein. An increase of CD16+ NK cells was observed in four non-arthritis-developed monkeys (two females and two males). There was no significant difference in the fluctuation pattern of CD4+ T cell, CD8+ T cell and CD20+ B cell levels between arthritis-developed monkeys and non-developed ones. In addition, the percentages of CD45RA+ CD4+ T cells to total CD4+ T cells, CD28- CD8+ T cells to total CD8+ T cells, and IgD- B cells to total B cells did not significantly differ between them. On the other hand, a significant increase was demonstrated in CD14-positive cells at 3 weeks after immunization in only arthritis-developed monkeys regardless of sex. The expression of CD14 antigen on the surface of increased cells was low in comparison with those appearing in blood obtained before immunization. In addition, increased CD14low cells showed no response to LPS stimulation. However, there was no significant difference in antibody titer to both chick type-II and monkey type-II collagen between arthritis-developed monkeys and non-developed ones. These results suggest that an increase in number of CD14low monocytes with immature function might be a part of the autoimmune response, and that the appearance of these cells is of pathogenic importance in the arthritic process in cynomolgus monkeys regardless of the production of autoantibody.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cardiovascular structure and function of older adult Rhesus monkey by utrasonography. METHODS: Sixteen monkeys aged from 17 to 20 years and weighing from 8.2 to 15.3 kg, six adults aged 7-8 years and weighing from 8.1 to 9.2 kg. All monkeys were determined to be free from hypertension, hyperglycaemia and cardiac disease. The normal values of index related to heart and blood vessels including structure, haemodynamics and systolic or diastolic function were detected by 2D, M-mode, pulsed Doppler and tissue Doppler echocardiography respectively under ketamine hydrochloride sedation. Meanwhile, blood pressures were also measured by electronic sphygmomanometer. Each monkey underwent repeated detections in 2 weeks and all data were analysed with statistical methods. RESULTS: Compared with young adult monkeys, the older's heart rate (HR), the left ventricular diastolic function and the compliance of big artery including right and left common carotid artery, bulbus caroticus, internal carotid artery and abdominal aorta were decreased and the associated indexes changed significantly (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Meanwhile, older monkeys exhibited significant increase in the aorta diameter (AO), amplitude of aortic wall (AAO), left atrial diameter (LAD), end diastolic volume of left ventricle (EDV), stroke volume (SV), left ventricular mass (LVM) (P < 0.05 vs. young adult monkeys); however, cardiac output (CO) only slightly increased but the difference did not reach the statistical significance (P = 0.418, P = 0.644 respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The present results demonstrated the profiles of cardiovascular function and structure in the older Rhesus monkeys. Older monkey is accompanied by diminished left ventricular diastolic function and big artery compliance. Ultrasonography provides a means to non-invasively evaluate the anatomy and function of the heart and blood vessel, and plays an increasingly important role in the drug evaluation against cardiovascular dysfunction.  相似文献

To examine whether an accumulation of elements in the arteries with aging differs between human and animal, the authors investigated the relationships among element contents in the arteries of the Japanese monkeys. The Japanese monkeys consisted of five males and four females, ranging in age from 2 to 29 yr. The aorta, common and external iliac, femoral, common carotid, subclavian, and axillary arteries were resected from the monkeys and element contents were determined by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. It was found that there were very high correlations between calcium and phosphorus contents, between calcium and magnesium contents, and between phosphorus and magnesium contents in all of the monkey arteries. In addition, significant correlations were found among the other element contents in some, but not all of the arteries. These results were consistent with the foregoing findings of the human arteries. It is likely that magnesium forms compounds with phosphorus or calcium in the monkey arteries.  相似文献

Characteristic patterns of changes in pulmonary diffusing capacity (DL) at rest and during exercise were investigated and characteristics of normal DL values concerned on sex, age, and ethnic groups were examined by viewing our studies and other reports. The relation of DL and pulmonary capillary blood volume (Vc) was represented as a logarithmic regression at rest and as a linear regression during exercise. The curve relation at rest is considered to show that the increase in Vc mainly reflects the process of transport from pulmonary capillary recruitment to pulmonary capillary dilation. The increasing rate of DL was not decreased during exercise, which seemed to be due to an increase in pulmonary blood flow accompanying exercise. The linear regression was also found between DL and oxygen intake during exercise and the slope was always constant among individuals and among subject groups. The general results concerned with sex difference in Japanese or ethnic difference between Japanese and Caucasians in both sexes could show that DL per stature was greater in males or Caucasians than in females or Japanese in young adults, however, the sex or ethnic difference disappeared in middle or old aged group. DL per alveolar volume which showed no sex or ethnic difference in young adults, was greater in middle or old aged group of females or Japanese than in that of males or Caucasians.  相似文献

Responses of peripheral blood mononuclear cells to phytohemagglutinin-P (PHA-P), concanavalin-A (ConA), and pokeweed mitogen (PWM) were compared in man and Japanese monkeys. Both CD8+ and CD8- T subsets showed greater responses to ConA than to PHA-P in the Japanese monkey. Addition of macrophages to each T subset produced more effective augmentation of ConA response in the Japanese monkey than in man, and ConA induced more interleukin-2-receptor-positive blast cells than PHA-P did in Japanese monkeys.  相似文献

Abstract: Non‐human primates are widely used in research, yet relatively few studies have addressed potential pharmacokinetic differences between males and females. The present study examined the relationship between total body water, sex, age, and weight in the rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta). Ethanol‐naïve, adolescent rhesus macaques (n = 119) were administered ethanol (males, 2.1 g/kg; females, 2.0 g/kg) intravenously, and blood samples for blood ethanol concentration obtained at 5, 10, and 60 minutes following the end of the infusion. Non‐linear regression was used to compare and contrast a series of pharmacokinetic models examining the relationship between weight, sex, age, Vd and zero‐order elimination rate. Vd (mean ± SEM) for male rhesus was 0.771 ± 0.008 l/kg and for females was 0.730 ± 0.008 l/kg, different at P < 0.00001. There were no sex differences in the rate of zero‐order ethanol elimination, estimated to be 0.0032 ± 0.0004 g/kg/minute. The data reported here may be useful in designing and interpreting pharmacokinetic studies using rhesus monkeys.  相似文献

Baseline pulmonary physiologic values were determined on 43 (421-910 g) male and 47 (425-604 g) female squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus). Respiratory rate was found to be 55 +/- 1.9 (SE) breaths per minute for males and 58 +/- 1.7 breaths per minute for females. Tidal volume was 8.9 +/- 0.37 ml for males and 7.5 +/- 0.28 ml for females. Airway resistance for the male was 0.052 +/- 0.006 cm H2O/ml/second; while for the female it was 0.086 +/- 0.011 cm H2O/ml/second. Dynamic compliance was found to be 1.78 +/- 0.15 ml/cm H2O for males and 1.48 +/- 0.124 ml/cm H2O for females. An index of distribution of ventilation was 48 +/- 2.5 breaths for males and 42 +/- 1.7 breaths for females.  相似文献

Forty-nine free-ranging Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) were immobilized with 4.3–15.6 mg/kg (mean±S.D.=10.0±2.5 mg/kg) of ketamine hydrochloride (HCl), and 27 Japanese monkeys kept in enclosures were immobilized with a combination of 0.8–1.4 mg/kg (1.0±0.2 mg/kg) of xylazine HCl and 4.0–7.1 mg/kg (5.0±0.6 mg/kg) of ketamine HCl. In the xylazine HCl-ketamine HCl combination, good myorelaxation was induced. The mean induction times for the single dosage of ketamine HCl and the xylazine HCl-ketamine HCl combination were 2.8±1.5 min and 6.9±4.4 min, respectively. The mean immobilization times with the single dosage of ketamine HCl and the xylazine HCl-ketamine HCl combination were 39.3±16.5 min and 58.8±34.2 min, respectively. A half dose of ketamine HCl in combination with xylazine HCl could also immobilize Japanese monkeys successfully. Administrations of 0.5 mg/kg i.v. and 1.0 mg/kg i.m. of yohimbine HCl as an antagonist to xylazine HCl at 30 min after the induction reduced the immobilization time to 31.4±0.5 min and 49.0±22.1 min, respectively. Yohimbine HCl appears to be an effective antagonist to combination anesthesia by xylazine HCl-ketamine HCl in the Japanese monkey.  相似文献

Spider monkeys (Ateles sp.) live in a flexible fission–fusion social system in which members of a social group are not in constant association, but instead form smaller subgroups of varying size and composition. Patterns of range use in spider monkeys have been described as sex‐segregated, with males and females often ranging separately, females utilizing core areas that encompass only a fraction of the entire community range, and males using much larger portions of the community range that overlap considerably with the core areas of females and other males. Males are also reported to use the boundary areas of community home ranges more often than females. Spider monkeys thus seem to parallel the “male‐bonded” patterns of ranging and association found among some groups of chimpanzees. Over several years of research on one group of spider monkeys (Ateles belzebuth) in Yasuní National Park, Ecuador, we characterized the ranging patterns of adult males and females and evaluated the extent to which they conform to previously reported patterns. In contrast to ranging patterns seen at several other spider monkey sites, the ranges of our study females overlapped considerably, with little evidence of exclusive use of particular areas by individual monkeys. Average male and female home range size was comparable, and males and females were similar in their use of boundary areas. These ranging patterns are similar to those of “bisexually bonded” groups of chimpanzees in West Africa. We suggest that the less sex‐segregated ranging patterns seen in this particular group of spider monkeys may be owing to a history of human disturbance in the area and to lower genetic relatedness between males, highlighting the potential for flexibility some aspects of the spider monkeys' fission–fusion social system.
