The primary structure of rat ribosomal protein L26

The amino acid sequence of rat ribosomal protein L26 was deduced from the sequence of nucleotides in a recombinant cDNA and confirmed from the NH2-terminal amino acid sequence of the protein. Rat L26 contains 145 amino acids and has a molecular mass of 17,266 Da. Hybridization of the cDNA to digests of nuclear DNA suggests that there are 8-16 copies of the L26 gene. The mRNA for the protein is about 650 nucleotides in length. Protein L26 has a sequence of 9 residues that may be repeated in three places.     

The primary structure of rat ribosomal protein L35

The amino acid sequence of the rat 60S ribosomal subunit protein L35 was deduced from the sequence of nucleotides in a recombinant cDNA and confirmed from the NH2-terminal amino acid sequence of the protein. Ribosomal protein L35 has 122 amino acids (the NH2-terminal methionine is removed after translation of the mRNA) and has a molecular weight of 14,412. Hybridization of the cDNA to digests of nuclear DNA suggests that there are 15-17 copies of the L35 gene. The mRNA for the protein is about 570 nucleotides in length. Rat L35 is related to the archaebacterial ribosomal proteins Halobacterium marismortui L33 and Halobacterium halobium L29E; it is also related to Escherichia coli L29 and to other members of the prokaryotic ribosomal protein L29 family. The protein contains a possible internal duplication of 11 residues.     

Nucleotide sequence of cloned cDNA specific for rat ribosomal protein L35a

A cDNA clone specific for rat ribosomal protein L35a, which is known to be a tRNA-binding protein, was isolated by hybrid-selected translation from a cDNA library made for 8-9-S poly(A)-rich RNA from regenerating rat liver. The nucleotide sequence of the cDNA was determined. It consists of one base pair from the 5' leading sequence, the entire coding sequence of 333 base pairs and 14 base pairs from the 3' trailing sequence. The primary structure of protein L35a was deduced from the nucleotide sequence. It consists of 109 amino acids with a molecular mass of 12422. The calculated amino acid composition is consistent with that reported for the hydrolysate of L35a. The amino acid sequence showed marked homology with the reported partial sequence of Xenopus leavis ribosomal protein L32, but not significant homology with Escherichia coli ribosomal proteins that bind to tRNA.     

Molecular cloning of ribosomal protein L26 (RPL26) cDNA from Ailuropoda melanoleuca and its potential value in phylogenetic study

The cDNA fragment of ribosomal protein L26 (RPL26) was cloned from Ailuropoda melanoleuca using RT-PCR method. The cDNA fragment is composed of 475 bp, containing an open reading frame of 145 amino acids. Alignment analyses indicated that the nucleotide sequence and the deduced amino acid sequence showed high identity to other known RPL26 sequences from vertebrates and invertebrates. The cDNA sequence was used to construct phylogenetic trees with other known vertebrate and invertebrate RPL26 sequences, and the obtained trees demonstrated similar topology with the classical systematics, indicating the potential value of RPL26 gene in phylogenetic analysis.
