Frequent references are made to presumed antipredator adaptations exhibited by callitrichids, but there are very few systematic investigations of these behaviors. One set of untested presumptions stems from observations that callitrichids become especially vigilant and cryptic prior to retirement each evening. This hypothesis was tested in the current study by quantifying the rates of vocalizations and extragroup behavior at various times of the day. Using two groups of captive red-bellied tamarins, it was demonstrated that these primates do become relatively more quiet and more attentive to the nonsocial environment prior to retirement each evening, culminating in virtual silence once the nest box has been entered. While the adaptive significance of these phenomena has not yet been tested, it is likely that the behaviors reduce vulnerability to predation. 相似文献

The effects of different social living conditions on estrogen excretion and on the ovarian cycle of saddle back tamarins were investigated. Urinary estrogens were monitored as indices of ovarian cyclicity in groups of adult females living under the following experimental conditions: (1) five parous females, each living with an adult castrated male (in one of the females plasma estradiol and progesterone were also measured); (2) five adult daughters living with their families. Each daughter was then removed from her family and paired with a vasectomized male. After pairing, scent marks collected from the family were introduced daily to one of the daughters and her mate. Scent exposure was then discontinued and hormone excretion measured for several weeks. The remaining four daughters were not exposed to family scent. The females living with castrated males showed urinary estrogen cycles of an average length of 17.5 ± 1.0 days. The plasma estrogen cycle was of the same length. The females studied under condition 2 showed low, noncycling estrogen levels while living in their families. They responded to pairing with an increase in the level of urinary estrogens, and four out of five showed regular estrogen cyclicity. The fifth female exposed to family scent marks after pairing also showed an increase in urinary estrogens. However, as long as scent transfer was maintained, no cycle was observed. Estrogen excretion increased again, and cyclicity commenced when scent transfer was discontinued. It is concluded that ovarian estrogen production is suppressed and cyclicity does not occur as long as daughters live in their families. Release from suppression and perhaps stimulation by the male cause a rapid increase in estrogen levels and the onset of cyclicity. Chemical stimuli produced by the family, perhaps particularly by the mother, may be involved in reproductive suppression. 相似文献

Several species of tamarins form stable mixed-species troops in which groups of each species feed, forage, rest, and travel together during much of the year. Although the precise set of factors that facilitate this ecological relationship remains unclear, predator detection and foraging benefits are presumed to play a critical role in maintaining troop stability. In this work we present data from an experimental field study designed to examine how factors such as social dominance and within-patch foraging decisions affect the costs and benefits to tamarins of visiting feeding sites as single- and mixed-species troops. Our data indicate that when they exploited contestable food patches (sets of eight feeding platforms, two of which contained a 100-g banana), each tamarin species experienced foraging costs when they arrived as part of a mixed-species troop. These costs were found to be less severe for emperor tamarins because they were socially dominant to saddle-back tamarins and could displace them at feeding sites. We conclude that the foraging benefits to tamarins residing in mixed-species troops are asymmetrical, and that at feeding sites in which the amount of food in a patch is insufficient to satiate all troop members, even minor differences in the timing of return to food patches and changes in troop cohesion have a measurable effect on the costs and benefits to participating tamarin species. 相似文献

Eighty-one black-handed tamarins from the Tucurui region were tested for human type ABO blood groups by salivary inhibition tests. Eleven belonged to the A group, 45 to B, and 25 to AB. The serum samples were tested for the presence of agglutinins having specificities like those of humans. The ABO system appeared to be polymorphic, with three alleles occurring at the following frequencies: A = 0.26, B = 0.66, and O = 0.08. The observed distribution fitted the expected on the basis of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. 相似文献

By forming larger sizes of groups, individuals benefit from a decrease in vigilance, but the collective vigilance of the group as a whole is not compromised. We examined whether this group size effect is apparent in mixed-species groups of red-bellied tamarins (S. labiatus) and saddleback tamarins (S. fuscicollis) which form stable and permanent associations in the wild. We studied general vigilance and responses to hidden threatening stimuli in five captive groups of each species, while they were housed in single- and mixed-species groups. For vigilance, the individual rate was lower in the larger mixed-species groups than in the smaller single-species groups. In addition, the amount of time when at least one individual was vigilant was higher in mixed-species groups. This suggests that the tamarins alter their vigilance behavior in the presence of the other species. In response to hidden threats, both species performed brief vigilance checks and frequencies of checking did not differ in single- and mixed-species groups. However, both species had a significant reduction in the mean duration per check, and there was a reduced total amount of time spent vigilance checking in the mixed-species groups compared to the single-species groups, demonstrating the group size effect. Overall the mixed-species groups had a higher number and mean duration of checking than the smaller single-species groups. Given that the two species share a common set of predators, and respond to each other's alarm calls, these findings provide strong evidence that individuals of both tamarin species may be able to benefit from forming mixed-species groups via improved vigilance and monitoring of threats. 相似文献

Patterns of morphological variation play an important role in evolutionary diversification and are critical to an informed interpretation of interspecific differences. When patterns of genetic variation have not diverged substantially, it is possible to reconstruct the differences in selection which gave rise to morphological differences among extant species. Morphological variation patterns are compared between two tamarin species, the cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) and the saddle-back tamarin (S. fuscicollis illigeri). Genetic, phenotypic, and environmental variance/covariance and correlation matrices were obtained for a series of 39 cranial characters in each species (cotton-top tamarin, N = 328; saddle-back tamarin, N = 209) and for the species combined using crania from individuals of known genealogical relationship. After accounting for the effects of estimation error on measures of matrix similarity, patterns of phenotypic, genetic, and environmental variation and correlation were found to be very similar across species and among the types of variance within species. Taking the saddle-back tamarins as the standard, cotton-top tamarins have been selected for an enlarged anterior temporalis attachment area and increased facial prognathism. In primates, an enlarged anterior temporalis muscle is associated with incisive food preparation, especially at wide gape. 相似文献

Polyspecific associations (PSA) occur when 2 or more species maintain proximity or coordinate activities. PSA may provide ecological benefits similar to those of monospecific groups, i.e., protection against predation and improved foraging efficiency, but may also impart costs, such as feeding competition. I studied 3 New World Callitrichidae—Callimico goeldii, Saguinus fuscicollis, and S. labiatus—in northwestern Brazil over 18 mo between April 1999 and August 2003, during which single primary study groups of C. goeldii, S. labiatus, and S. fuscicollis consistently associated with one another. I compared patterns of PSA participation to variation in plant diets during wet and dry seasons. All 3 species associated an average 61% of observation time, but with significant seasonal variation in PSA. During the dry season, April–September, PSA occurred significantly less frequently than during the wet season, October–March (37% vs. 88%). The variation in PSA corresponded with seasonal shifts in plant food diets, resulting in less dietary overlap among all 3 species during the dry season, particularly between Callimico goeldii and Saguinus labiatus. Dietary richness, diversity, and evenness were also lower in the dry compared to the wet season for each species. The results suggest a link between PSA participation and diet among the taxa; foraging-related costs or feeding competition may constrain PSA during the dry season. 相似文献

The effect of the presence of a familiar social partner on the interactions of saddle back tamarins with unfamiliar conspecifics was studied. Fifteen adult male-female pairs, of which six were composed of a castrated male and an intact female, served as subjects. All subject pairs were given two social encounters during which both mates met a strange male and two encounters during which they met a strange female. In addition, all subjects were given four encounters during which they met the same strangers while their own pair mates were absent. As a group, the subjects showed higher intensities of injurious aggression and of agonistic displays when they met strangers in the presence of their own pair mates. Females and castrated males, as subgroups, showed significant increases in most agonistic responses when they met strangers in the presence of their pair mates. Intact males, however, did not. 相似文献

Data collected during a 12-month field investigation of mixed species troops of Saguinus mystax and Saguinus fuscicollis in the Amazon Basin of north-eastern Peru indicate that callitrichid primates play an important role in tropical forest seed dispersal. Moustached and saddle-back tamarins were observed to ingest seeds from a variety of tree and liana species and pass them unharmed. These seeds tended to be large and heavy, and passed through the tamarin digestive tract in one to three hours. Experimental plantings of defecated seeds yielded a germination success rate of 70%. The specific gravity of these seeds (weight/volume) was inversely correlated with passage time and apparently had an indirect influence on the distance that seeds were dispersed from the parent tree. In the case of three preferred fruiting species, Leonia glycycarpa, Pourouma sp., and Hippocrateaceae #283, the present distribution of adult trees closely resembled the pattern of the seed shadow created by Saguinus. Moustached and saddle-back tamarins appeared to be reliable and high-quality dispersal agents for a number of tree and liana species. In this role, they are likely to exert an important influence on the composition, distribution, and regeneration patterns of Amazonian rain forest. 相似文献

We investigated the development of food transfer and independent feeding in cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) families. We studied the relationship between infant-directed vocalizations and food transfers on the development of independent feeding in infants. We experimentally tested ten infants (eight twins and two singletons) three times a week for 17 weeks from before weaning through 20 weeks. Food transfers and vocalizations made during tests were recorded and analyzed to determine (1) the role of vocalizations (C- and D- chirps and D-chirp series) in food acquisition, (2) the relationship between food transfers and individual food acquisition, and (3) whether, owing to energetic costs of nursing and carrying twins, food is transferred to twins sooner than to singletons. Infants were more successful in acquiring food via begging when adults produced repeated vocalizations than when adults did not vocalize. Adults emitted more food-related vocalizations in rapid series when in the presence of infants, whereas during feeding in the absence of infants only single unit vocalizations were produced. Begging occurred frequently. Changes over infant age were not significant when all infants were included in analysis. However, when twin data were analyzed alone, begging success changed significantly over months, with successful begging peaking in month 3 (week 12). Begging success rate did not differ between twins and singletons, although twins fed independently sooner and at a higher rate than did singletons. 相似文献

Grooming is the most common form of affiliative behavior in primates that apart from hygienic and hedonistic benefits offers important social benefits for the performing individuals. This study examined grooming behavior in a cooperatively breeding primate species, characterized by single female breeding per group, polyandrous matings, dizygotic twinning, delayed offspring dispersal, and intensive helping behavior. In this system, breeding females profit from the presence of helpers but also helpers profit from staying in a group and assisting in infant care due to the accumulation of direct and indirect fitness benefits. We examined grooming relationships of breeding females with three classes of partners (breeding males, potentially breeding males, (sub)adult non-breeding offspring) during three reproductive phases (post-partum ovarian inactivity, ovarian activity, pregnancy) in two groups of wild moustached tamarins (Saguinus mystax). We investigated whether grooming can be used to regulate group size by either "pay-for-help" or "pay-to-stay" mechanisms. Grooming of breeding females with breeding males and non-breeding offspring was more intense and more balanced than with potentially breeding males, and most grooming occurred during the breeding females' pregnancies. Grooming was skewed toward more investment by the breeding females with breeding males during the phases of ovarian activity, and with potentially breeding males during pregnancies. Our results suggest that grooming might be a mechanism used by female moustached tamarins to induce mate association with the breeding male, and to induce certain individuals to stay in the group and help with infant care. 相似文献

In 1978, 66% of the individuals of Saguinus mystax and 9.5% of Saguinus fuscicollis were cropped from a population at the Yarapa river, Peru. The effects of cropping on the remaining tamarin population were evaluated by conducting censuses in 1981 and 1982 and by trapping and release of Saguinus mystax in 1981. Three hundred kilometers of trail were covered in the censuses, and all the groups within the 1.9-km2 study area were located. Within three years after cropping, the population of S. mystax had increased by 124%, more than double the size left in 1978. Increased reproductive rate, early breeding, and reduced infant mortality contributed to the recovery. On the other hand, S. fuscicollis had decreased by 12% in the three years following the cropping but had increased in the fourth year to a level slightly below the precropping density. The cropping of more S. mystax than S. fuscicollis might have contributed to the decline of the latter. The cropping of a sizable percentage of S. mystax from a natural population does not seem to impair its recuperative powers. It may take longer than four years for a population exhibiting high density, such as that at the Yarapa site, to recover completely. 相似文献

Saguinus fuscicollisproduces scent marks which consist mainly of a mixture of urine and the secretions of circumgenital scent glands. The present
study investigates the ability of saddle-back tamarins to discriminate between scent material from conspecifics and corresponding
material from other species and to differentiate material from two subspecies of Saguinus fuscicollis. When choices between urine samples from conspecifics and from guinea pigs and choices between urine samples from conspecifics
and from common marmosets were offered, the tamarins investigated samples from conspecifics more frequently. Similar responses
were obtained when choices between scent marks from saddle-back tamarins and from common marmosets and between scent marks
from saddle-back and red-chested moustached tamarins were offered. The tamarins also discriminated between scent marks and
between extracts of scent marks from Saguinus f. fuscicollisand Saguinus f. illigeri. In these choice tests, subjects of both subspecies tended preferentially to investigate material from Saguinus f. fuscicollis. The results of these studies show that urine and scent marks contain chemical cues on which recognition of conspecifics can
be based. Moreover, the scent marks of closely related subspecies also offer cues which could enable the tamarins to discriminate
between them. 相似文献

The influence of various social environments on estrogen excretion, scent marking, and the expression of sociosexual behavior was examined in cotton-top tamarins (Sanguinus o. oedipus). Behavioral observations and urine collections were conducted on five females while first housed in their natal family group or in the presence of another cycling adult female and then while housed with an unrelated adult male in a separate cage. Behavioral observations only were conducted on males in natal family groups and while housed with an unrelated adult female. Levels of urinary estrone and estradiol for females were measured by specific radioimmunoassays. Females housed in family groups or in the presence of an adult cycling female showed low and noncyclic patterns of estrogen excretion. Removal from these environments resulted in a rapid increase in urinary estrone and estradiol and three of five females demonstrated cyclic patterns of estrone excretion. Rates of anogenital marking in females were elevated after the social change, and sexual interactions, virtually absent in the original environments, were observed in all five females. In males, similar manipulations of the social environment affected the expression of sexual behavior, but not scent marking. The social environment, therefore has a profound impact on fertility and sociosexual behavior in cotton-top tamarin groups, with implications for callitrichid social structure and behavior. 相似文献

Social and seasonal influences on reproductive biology in male moustached tamarins (Saguinus mystax)
In several primate taxa there is evidence that the social and physical environment can exert a significant effect on reproductive behavior and biology. In this paper we examine social and physiological factors influencing group composition and reproduction in free-ranging moustached tamarin monkeys (Saguinus mystax mystax). This species is characterized by cooperative care of the young and a breeding system that includes both polyandrous and polygyandrous matings. Body measurements collected on adult males residing in multimale groups indicate marked within-group differences in testes volume. In 12 of 17 groups examined, testes volume of at least two resident adult males differed by 21–174%. Among these males, testes volume was not correlated with either body weight or adult age class. We also examine whether factors such as time of year had an effect on reproductive condition. An analysis of body measurements of 128 adult male and 127 adult female moustached tamarins, wild-trapped and released in northeastern Peru, indicates cyclic changes in genital size. For males, mean monthly testes volume in July (712 mm3) was twice that recorded in June (351 mm3). Females exhibited a similar pattern. Although endocrine information on intra- and intersexual social effects on fertility are unavailable for S. mystax, given the high degree of social cooperation and lack of overt aggression among adult male group members, we offer the possibility that resident male moustached tamarins compete for access to the groups' lone breeding female through socially induced reproductive suppression and sperm competition. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Direct measurements of urinary immunoreactive estrone conjugates (E1C) and pregnanediol glucuronide (PdG), were applied to monitoring the ovarian cycle (n = 9) and pregnancy (3 full term pregnancies, 2 mid-term abortions) in Saguinus fuscicollis. During the ovarian cycle, urinary E1C concentrations revealed a high degree of day-to-day variability and appeared to be uninformative in reflecting cyclic ovarian function. In contrast, PdG was a reliable indicator of ovarian cyclicity with excretion patterns corresponding well with plasma progesterone profiles. Luteal phase PdG concentrations were on average 4–7–fold higher than corresponding follicular phase values. On the basis of changes in circulating progesterone, a mean cycle length of 25.7 ±1.0 days with an average follicular phase of 7.1 ± 0.6 days and a mean luteal phase of 18.6 ± 0.7 days, was found (n = 14 cycles). Following conception, both urinary steroid conjugate concentrations increased and elevated levels were maintained beyond the normal luteal phase length, allowing pregnancy to be determined at around day 25–30. During mid- to late pregnancy, PdG levels declined while E1C concentrations continued to be elevated until approximately 6 weeks before parturition when a decrease occurred. Both hormones showed a clear and rapid fall to follicular phase values following termination of pregnancy at either parturition or mid-term abortion. Post partum ovulations (n = 5) occurred on average 17–18 days following birth with four ovulations leading to conceptions. The results demonstrate the potential of urinary steroid conjugate analysis as a practical and reliable method for non-invasive monitoring of reproductive status in the female saddle-back tamarin. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

A comparative analysis of the gastrointestinal tracts of wild-caught marmosets, Callithrix emiliae, and tamarins, Saguinus fuscicollis weddelli, was undertaken in order to evaluate the degree of specialisation for digestion of plant exudates. Compared to S.f. weddelli, C. emiliae exhibits a reduced small intestine and a relatively large, compartmentalised caecum in which gum is probably fermented. The apparent specialisation of the digestive tract in C. emiliae correlates with that of its dentition, which is adapted for gouging the bark of gum-producing plants. A similar degree of specialisation of the caecum is predicted for other marmosets (Callithrix spp. and Cebuella pygmaea). 相似文献

We present data on aspects of the behavioral ecology of a free- ranging group of Saguinus fuscicollis weddelliat a site in Brazilian Amazonia where a second callitrichid, Callithrix emiliae,is syntopic. Diet, activity patterns, and ranging behavior are broadly similar to those of S. fuscicollisfrom sites in Bolivia, Brazil, and Perú, though significant seasonal changes include an extreme and atypical form of ranging
behavior in which they foraged in central-place fashion around a source of exudate—Parkia pendula. S. f. weddelliwas active at relatively low levels in the forest both in absolute terms and relative to C.emiliae, which appears to be an important factor in their niche partitioning. Association between the two species appeared
to be less systematic overall than those observed between S. fuscicollisand congeners at other sites, though this may be partly a result of observation conditions. During the period of central-place
foraging, the two species exhibited a high degree of association. Other characteristics of the behavior of S. f. weddelliat the study site include the frequent use of tree holes as sleeping sites. 相似文献

Tamarins of the genus Saguinus, subfamily Callitrichinae, represent one of the most diverse primate radiations. So far, about 35 taxa have been described, but detailed information about their taxonomy and phylogeny is still lacking. To further elucidate the phylogenetic relationships and the biogeographic history within the genus, and to contribute to a more reliable classification of its taxa, we sequenced the complete mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and the hypervariable region I of the D-loop. Therefore, we mainly used fecal samples from wild tamarins collected during two expeditions to the Peruvian Amazon, an area of high tamarin diversity. Our data suggest that the numerous taxa of the S. nigricollis species group are derived from a common ancestor that separated from the other representatives of the genus ~10 mya. Most taxa of the S. nigricollis group form monophyletic clusters, which mainly originated in a single rapid radiation ~2.9 mya. S. fuscicollis and S. nigricollis appear as polyphyletic taxa, but we could identify various clusters, which are mainly consistent with differences in coat coloration. We could confirm most of the existing taxa as distinct entities and suggest species status for fuscicollis, illigeri, lagonotus, leucogenys, nigricollis, nigrifrons, tripartitus, and weddelli. Our genetic data do not support a separate status for melanoleucus and graellsi, but due to differences in fur coloration, we give them subspecies status. The species group most likely originated in western Amazonia and diversified during the decline of the Acre wetland and the formation of the Amazonian river system. 相似文献
