This paper deals with a biometric study of 312 boys and girls, aged 2.5-16 years, living in an area with a long history of pollution by lead. The aim was to search for eventual relationships between ten biometric variables and measures of lead absorption in the bodies, i.e. the amount of lead in the blood (PbB), of these children. Standardized values of the biometric variables were compared in the high-PbB and low-PbB categories, by multivariate analysis of variance. Comparison of the vectors of the ten biometric variables reveals a significant difference between the two categories of PbB levels. We found some evidence that the younger children (below 8 years of age) are more likely to absorb lead in the body and are more vulnerable to the effects of subclinical lead intoxication than their older counterparts. The differences between the averages of biometric variables in the two PbB categories are consistently (although not significantly) greater among younger children. This trend disappeared in the older age group. These results confirm data from the literature that young children are especially at risk. It can be concluded that there is a subtle, but significant, influence of lead absorption on the biometric profiles of children and that this effect is probably more important in children below 8 years of age.  相似文献

The effects of environmental lead on the immune system of young children were assessed by determining the peripheral blood lymphocytes CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, B(CD19+) counts, and natural killer (CD16+ CD56+) cells in 35 preschool children whose mean blood lead level was 140.6 μg/L. The results were compared to an age- and sex-matched control group with a mean blood lead level of 64.3 μg/L. Compared to the controls, a significant reduction in the percentage of CD4+ cells and a significant increase of CD8+ cells were seen in the high-lead group. The negative correlation between the percentage of CD4+ cells and blood lead levels was found to be significant (p<0.01). These results suggest that exposure to environmental lead might result in alterations in the immune function of young children.  相似文献

Blood lead levels of 619 healthy and nonoccupationally exposed inhabitants of central and rural parts of Ankara, (297 females and 322 males) ages 2–80, were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Lead also was determined in the whole blood samples from 66 (all male) occupationally exposed adults. The blood lead levels were significantly higher (p<0.05) among children (16.95 μg/100 mL as a geometric mean) than the subdivided age groups of adults (geometric means by decades of age group were ranged from 8.39 μg/100 mL to 14.34 μg/100mL). The levels were lower among young adults and gradually to reach a plateau at the 50–59 age group. Although females had lower lead blood levels than males, sex difference was insignificant (p>0.05).  相似文献

This paper reports blood lead levels in children from three Sardinian municipalities: Portoscuso, Iglesias, and Sestu. Portoscuso, chosen as the control area, is located about 2 km from one of the most important industrial complexes of the island. Iglesias was once an important zinc-lead mining centre. Sestu is a semi-urban centre located about 10 km from Cagliari (the islands's capital), and may be considered unexposed to lead pollution. Blood lead concentration was evaluated in heparinized venous blood samples by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Children living in Portoscuso show a higher mean of blood lead levels (8.43 micrograms/dl) as compared to that of children of the same age living in Iglesias (6.92 micrograms/dl) and Sestu (5.71 micrograms/dl). By the Bonferroni t-tests procedure these mean differences appear to be statistically significant. The mean of PbB levels obtained in this investigation for children from Portoscuso showed a decrease of 33.62% with respect to that reported in a previous investigation carried out in 1987 (12.7 micrograms/dl).  相似文献

The plasma and erythrocyte lipid peroxide levels were measured in a group of male subjects occupationally exposed to lead for an average period of 17 yr, and compared to those from an age-matched control group living in the same city in a similar socioeconomical environment. The blood lead and plasma zinc levels were measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The plasma and erythrocyte lipid peroxide levels were established by the malondialdehyde determination method. Significant differences were found in the blood lead levels in lead-exposed workers, 15.00±10.15 μg/dL as compared to controls, 2.37±0.89 μg/dL. The plasma (2.67±0.69 μM) and erythrocyte (27.53±6.28 nmol/g Hb) lipid peroxide levels in workers with occupational exposure to lead were significantly higher than controls, 1.23±0.61 μM and 14.35±2.08 nmol/g Hb, respectively. There were no significant differences of the zinc levels in both groups. The blood lead levels had a statistically significant positive correlation with age and with duration of exposure in both groups, but showed no relationship to the corresponding blood zinc levels. The results presented in this study indicate that the increase of plasma and erythrocyte lipid peroxide levels in workers exposed to lead may be related to the lead concentration, age and duration of exposure.  相似文献

Nutritional factors are known to influence metabolism and toxicity of several metals in animal experiments, but relevant human data are scarce and inconclusive. In this work, we tested the hypothesis that dietary calcium influences lead metabolism in humans. Blood lead concentrations were used as indicators of lead exposure and metabolism. Two groups of peasant women living in similar conditions in two different regions in Yugoslavia (100 in each) were chosen as subjects for this purpose. In region A, the dietary calcium intake was about 940 mg, and in region B about two times lower, i.e., 450 mg/day. The average blood lead concentration was significantly lower in women from region A (69 micrograms/L) than from region B (83 micrograms/L). Our results support the assumption that adequate calcium intake might be one of the preventive measures for decreasing lead absorption. This new evidence, sought for some time by nutritionists and toxicologists, needs further international confirmation.  相似文献

This paper reports the data for endogamy, exogamy and consanguinity in 20 Sardinian villages from 1800 to 1974, divided into generational periods (25 years). The data are taken from the records of 48,262 marriages celebrated in the parishes of 20 Sardinian villages. The results for Spearman's rank correlation coefficient indicate significant positive correlations of endogamy with consanguinity (r(s) = 0.6551, percentage of consanguineous marriages; r(s) = 0.5477, Bernstein's alpha), with altitude (r(s) = 0.6386), with population size (r(s) = 0.2519), as well as a significant negative correlation of endogamy with time (r(s) = -0.4210). In addition, consanguinity shows a significant positive correlation with altitude (r(s) = 0.5717, percentage of consanguineous marriages; r(s) = 0.6295, Bernstein's alpha) and a significant negative correlation with time (r(s) = -0.2363, percentage of consanguineous marriages); the negative correlation between the mean level of consanguinity (alpha) and time is statistically not significant. In the single parishes, the levels of endogamy and consanguinity are generally higher in the mountain villages than in those situated in the hill and plain areas. Finally, it is hypothesized that, in the time period considered, the level of consanguinity and especially of endogamy were largely determined by isolation.  相似文献

Radial and ulnar ridge counts on each of the 10 fingers, total finger ridge count, bilateral summed radial and ulnar finger ridge counts, an index of asymmetry between homologous fingers and two indices of intraindividual diversity of finger ridge counts were used to identify biological relationships among Sardinian linguistic groups. Stepwise discriminant analysis of 26 digital traits of 1258 Sardinians, 647 females and 611 males, was carried out. The results indicate high intergroup heterogeneity; moreover, with p≤0.01 as F-to-enter and p≤0.05 as F-to-remove, only 5 of the 26 digital variables are in the model (URC R5, RRC L5, RRC R5, URC R4, URC L5). The pattern of interpopulation biological relationships shows a clearly distinct position of the Gallurian group (both males and females), which speaks an Italian dialect. It originated mainly from Corsican immigration to the Gallura region starting from the XVII century. While the properly Sardinian linguistic groups (Campidanian and Logudorian) and the Sassarian group, which speaks an Italian dialect that developed as a “lingua franca” during the Middle Ages (XII–XIV centuries) due to linguistic contact between Sardinians and Italians, are positioned close to one another. This pattern agrees more with the ethno-historical back-ground than with the linguistic one.  相似文献

This study compares the red blood cell (Rbc) levels of lead (Pb), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) in relation to blood pressure in 39 pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy. The study population included 20 women with normal pregnancies, 15 with mild hypertension, and 4 with severe hypertension and preeclampsia. The mean±SD for each group was calculated and the difference between the means of the normotensive and the other groups were compared by analysis of variance. Significant differences from normal to the preeclamptic pregnancies were in (1) elevated Rbc Pb (p≤0.001), (2) lower Rbc Ca (p≤0.001), and (3) lower Rbc Mg/Pb ratio (p≤0.0001). Pearson’s rank correlation between blood pressure showed a direct relation to the Rbc Pb level (p≤0.01) and an inverse relation to the Rbc Ca and Mg/Pb ratio (p≤0.004,≤0.007). Apparently, prenatal blood pressure is directly proportional to Rbc Pb content and related or modified by Rbc Ca and Mg.  相似文献

Discriminant analysis of 23 digital and 15 palmar quantitative dermatoglyphic variables of 1364 Sardinians, 689 males and 675 females, were performed to identify biological relationships among five Sardinian linguistic groups of both sexes. By ANOVA 17 of the 23 digital variables and 4 of the 15 palmar variables were significantly different among males and females of the Sardinian linguistic groups. By MANOVA the results indicate high intergroup heterogeneity also within each sex. By stepwise discriminant analysis with p≤0.01 as F-to-enter and p≤0.05 as F-to-remove, only 4 of the 38 digital and palmar variables were in the model (URC R5, RRC L5, RRC R5, URC R4). The pattern of interpopulation biological relationships shows a clearly distinct position of the Gallurian group (both males and females) which speaks an Italian dialect. The properly Sardinian linguistic groups (Campidanian and Logudorian), the Sassarian group (which speaks and Italian dialect) and the Alghero group (which speaks Catalan) were close to one another. This pattern agrees more with the ethno-historical background than with the linguistic one.  相似文献

This study reports hair lead (PbH) levels measured in 2002 in 193 children from three Sardinian towns: Carbonia, Gonnesa, and Sinnai. Carbonia and Gonnesa are in a polluted area of Sardinia due to their vicinity to the industrial zone of Portovesme. As a consequence of its economy and location, Sinnai is not exposed to lead pollution. PbH concentrations were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic absorption spectrometry. The aim of this study was to evaluate if hair is a reliable biomarker to determine different degrees of exposure of populations to lead pollution and if there is a tendency to higher accumulation by males or females. The girls of Carbonia had the highest mean PbH value (2.21 microg/g), followed by the Gonnesa girls (2.03 microg/g), Carbonia boys (1.86 microg/g), Gonnesa boys (0.91 microg/g), and finally the Sinnai boys (0.68 microg/g) and girls (0.50 microg/g). Two-way analysis of covariance, with age as covariate, revealed a significant effect of town and sex on log PbH. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient indicated a significant positive concordance between PbH levels and gender (score for males=1, females=2). The results suggest that hair is a reliable biomarker to determine different levels of exposure of populations to lead pollution, and they indicate that females tend to accumulate lead in the hair more than males of the same age.  相似文献

The relationship between blood lead (Pb) and serum levels of calcium and of neural nutrients such as thiamine and magnesium (Mg) has been determined in a Nigerian population that is occupationally exposed to Pb. Forty-seven male Pb workers were recruited as test subjects and 25 males unexposed to Pb served as controls. The test subjects were classified into three groups, based on severity of exposure to Pb. Blood lead (BPb) and the serum levels of Mg, thiamine, and calcium were determined in both test subjects and controls. The mean blood Pb level was not significantly higher in Pb workers. In contrast, Mg and thiamine levels were significantly decreased (p<0.05; p<0.01, respectively). However, the calcium level was not significantly lower in test subjects than in controls. Also, there was a significant negative correlation between serum thiamine and blood Pb levels (r=-0.50; p<0.01). Furthermore, there was a significant negative correlation between serum calcium and BPb levels (r=-0.41; p<0.01). This study has shown that relatively low BPb levels can enhance Pb absorption and also potentiate Pb neurotoxicity in the presence of decreased serum thiamine and Mg levels.  相似文献

The data used in this study are the fingerprints of 744 females from 6 Sardinian linguistic groups. We analyzed 15 dermatoglyphic variables of directional asymmetry, namely the right vs left signed differences between i-th homologous fingers for larger ridge counts, radial counts and ulnar counts. Principal components analysis of the dermatoglyphic variables in the females of Sardinian linguistic groups revealed a pattern of biological relations among the groups which is consistent with their linguistic, but especially historical and demographic, backgrounds.  相似文献

Objective: To find the best lead exposure assessment marker for children.

Methods: We recruited 11 children, calculated a cumulative blood lead index (CBLI) for the children, measured their concurrent BLL, assessed their development, and measured their bone lead level.

Results: Nine of 11 children had clinically significant neurodevelopment problems. CBLI and current blood lead level, but not the peak lead level, were significantly or marginally negatively associated with the full-scale IQ score.

Conclusion: Lead exposure at younger age significantly impacts a child’s later neurodevelopment. CBLI may be a better predictor of neurodevelopment than are current or peak blood lead levels.  相似文献

Lead is a highly toxic metal, the main source of which iscontamination from combustion of unleaded petrol. The aims of this work were todetect the degree of lead exposure in a large sample of children; determinetherelationship between blood lead levels (BPb) and age, sex, habitat and season of the year;andcorrelate BPb with zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) values. A cross-sectional study wascarried out. Blood fromroutine extractions drawn at our centre was used. BPb and ZPP weremeasured by atomic absorptionspectrophotometry and haematofluorimetry, respectively. We analysed 1158 blood samples from children.BPb (mean ± SEM): 0.22 ±0.04 mol l . Correlation BPb-age: BPb = 0.19 + 0.086 x age (months),r =0.129, P < 0.0001. BPb was greater in boys (0.23 ± 0.007 versus 0.20 ±0.006 mol l , P < 0.0002).No differences were observed between habitats(urban versus rural). BPb were higher in the warm months(0.24 ± 0.013versus 0.21 ± 0.007 mol l , P < 0.0001). Prevalence of lead intoxication (BPb > 0.48 mol l )was 4.2%. No differences in prevalence were found among the different groups. The correlationbetweenBPb and ZPP showed r = 0.0969, P = 0.0024. Utility for screening:sensitivity of 53.7% and specificity of 59.3% (cut-off point of 60 mol ZPPmol haem). We can conclude that lead exposure in children inoursample was in the range reported in similar studies in other areas andcountries, and below the toxic limit.None of the factors analysed significantlyinfluenced lead intoxication prevalence. There was no goodcorrelationbetween ZPP and BPb in our sample and the ZPP cut-off point used did not presentgoodspecificity and sensitivity values.  相似文献

Current evidence suggests that the neurotoxic effects of lead may partially be mediated through interference with the dopaminergic system. The aim of this study was to assess the levels of two peripheral dopaminergic markers- serum prolactin (Pro-S) and urinary homovanillic acid (HVA-U) - in children living around two lead smelters, who are presumed to be exposed to high environmental lead pollution (n = 200), and compare their results with 200 age- and sex-matched controls living in an area unpolluted by heavy metals, giving a total of 400 children (200 boys and 200 girls). The influence of lead exposure on HVA-U and Pro-S was assessed by stepwise multiple regression, testing lead concentrations in blood (Pb-B), age, sex and area of residence as predictors. Though lead levels were significantly higher in boys and in the lead-polluted environment, mean Pb-B values were relatively low, indicating a low uptake of lead in the contaminated environment (39.5 µg l-1, range 4.6-165µgl-1, n = 200), and no significant correlation could be found with either Pro-S or HVA-U. However, when the subgroup of 121 children with Pb-B levels above 50 µg l-1 were considered, a weak positive correlation was found between Pb-B and HVA-U (r2 = 0.04, p = 0.03), whilst in the even smaller subgroup of 15 children with Pb-B levels above 100 µg l-1, Pro-S appeared to be positively correlated with Pb-B, though the numbers of children were too small for the correlation to reach statistical significance (p = 0.095). These weak associations, probably not important in biological terms, indicate that Pro-S and HVA-U are not useful biomarkers at present exposure levels to lead in the environment. Nevertheless, the finding of subtle biochemical alterations in the dopaminergic system at Pb-B levels of around 100µgl-1 supports the recommended setting of the action level at this value.  相似文献

A cross sectional case (241 males occupationally exposed to lead)–control (102 males unexposed to lead) study was performed with the aim of evaluating the relationship between serum prolactin (S-PRL) and lead blood (PbB) levels. A meta-analysis of S-PRL levels in similar studies was also carried out. No difference of S-PRL between groups or any relationship between PbB and S-PRL levels was found. The meta-analysis showed a slight increase of S-PRL levels among exposed people, the weighted means falling within the reference values of the biomarker. The results do not support a routine use of S-PRL as a biomarker of effect in lead exposed workers.  相似文献
