Abstract:  This study investigated prey consumption, egg production, percent progeny loss, reproductive, pre- and post-reproductive periods, reproductive time ratio, reproductive rate and bioconversion efficiency of four aphidophagous ladybirds, viz. Cheilomenes sexmaculata (Fabricius), Coccinella septempunctata Linnaeus, Coccinella transversalis Fabricius and Propylea dissecta (Mulsant) on Dolichos lablab Linnaeus infested with cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch. C. sexmaculata had the highest bioconversion efficiency, reproductive rate and reproductive time ratio followed in rank order by P. dissecta , C. transversalis and C. septempunctata . This study indicates that C. sexmaculata has a narrow ecological relationship with A. craccivora . The increased allocation of resources to reproduction as indicated through a high reproductive time ratio and high bioconversion efficiency of C. sexmaculata and P. dissecta suggest that they may be better adapted to compete for this prey with larger species like C. transversalis and C. septempunctata .  相似文献

Abstract:  The role of surface chemicals in egg cannibalism and intraguild predation by neonates of two aphidophagous ladybirds, Propylea dissecta and Coccinella transversalis were examined. Neonates of both species prefer to eat non-sibling conspecific eggs than heterospecific eggs, with higher preference in P. dissecta . Surface chemicals appear to play a major role for the preference of conspecific eggs, as the ladybird behaviour was reversed when these chemicals were interchanged. The surface chemicals present on the eggs possibly act as feeding stimulants to conspecific neonates but not for heterospecific neonates. Egg clustering enhances the effect of surface chemical and stimulate non-sibling egg cannibalism and appears to reduce intraguild predation. Egg clustering is advantageous to ladybirds, as it can stimulate non-sibling cannibalism by neonates. It appears that aggregation of chemicals present on the conspecific egg surface possibly attracts the hungry conspecific neonate, providing the first meal for its survival, while protecting against heterospecific predators. Neonates of both ladybirds were reluctant to eat heterospecific eggs.  相似文献

Two congeneric aphidophagous ladybirds, Coccinella septempunctata and Coccinella transversalis, were reared on three aphid species, Lipaphis erysimi, Myzus persicae and Aphis nerii, to estimate the effect of prey quality and intra- and interspecific interactions on their survival and development of life stages. Mortality of first instar ladybirds of both species was highest feeding on A. nerii. Preimaginal mortafity was lowest when feeding on L. erysimi (C. septempunctata, 1.6% and C. transversalis, 3.2%), and highest when feeding on A. nerii ( C. septempunctata, 6.2% and C. transversalis, 8.2%). Comparatively higher weight and larger size of C. septempunctata along with the lower levels of mortality recorded suggested that it is more likely to have acted as an intraguild predator than C. transversalis. High recorded mortality of C. transversalis is attributed to probable intraguild predation on account of its smaller size. The major sources of mortality were probably cannibalism, intraguild predation and other unknown factors. Lower prey quality increased the incidence of cannibalism and intraguild predation, especially in C. transversalis. The investigation suggests an intrinsic competitive advantage for C. septempunctata over C. transversalis in guilds of three aphid species.  相似文献

Abstract:  Mating costs and benefits were studied in three aphidophagous ladybirds, viz. Cheilomenes sexmaculata , Coccinella septempunctata and Propylea dissecta by subjecting them to different numbers of matings. Longevity, fecundity and percent egg viability were regressed with number of matings to determine the costs and trade-offs, if any. Longevity decreased with increasing number of matings in both C. sexmaculata and P. dissecta indicating a cost of mating. The lack of such a cost in C. septempunctata has been ascribed to spermatophore consumption by females of this ladybird. Both fecundity and percent egg viability increased with increasing number of matings and are probably indicative of the benefits. Short-lived females distributed their reproduction uniformly in their lifetime while long-lived females showed a high burst of reproductive activity followed by a gradual decline. Percent egg viability decreased after the completion of the requisite number of matings.  相似文献

Abstract:  The effects of sibling egg cannibalism on sex-dependent development and adult body weight were determined by rearing simultaneously two groups of sibling larvae of ladybirds, viz. Propylea dissecta and Coccinella transversalis individually. The first group included cannibals (i.e. neonates, which took a sibling egg as the first meal and later fed on aphids, Aphis craccivora ) and the other included non-cannibals (reared exclusively on aphids). The cannibal larvae developed faster with heavier adults than non-cannibals. This expedited development and nutritional advantage (increased body weight) was greater in first instars indicating maximum benefit of sibling cannibalism to them. Sibling cannibalism was relatively more advantageous to male than to female ladybirds. Laboratory data predict that the larger size of adults in the field could possibly be the result of sibling egg cannibalism at the neonate level.  相似文献

Development, survival and reproductive performance of coexisting ladybird species, viz. Cheilomenes sexmaculata, Coccinella septempunctata, and Coccinella transversalis, of the tribe Coccinellini were studied and compared to assess their coexistence and ecological relationships. High values of life history parameters, viz. developmental rate,immature survival, fecundity, egg viability, reproductive rate and conversion of efficiency of ingested food were recorded for C. sexmaculata followed by C. transversalis and C.septempunctata suggesting that the former has intrinsic advantages over the latter two species. This could possibly counterbalance its disadvantages, like relatively smaller size and weight, thereby making it competitive. The developmental period increased with increase in body size. Exceptionally high fecundity after single mating has been recorded in C. sexmaculata. The egg viability, however, was lower than in both Coccinella species.  相似文献

Abstract.  Contrary to current assumptions, the reflex blood of two-spot ladybirds, Adalia bipunctata , and seven-spot ladybirds, Coccinella septempunctata , contains haemocyte-like cells. Furthermore, DNA can be extracted and amplified from coccinellid reflex blood, confirming the presence of haemocyte-like cells and demonstrating a nondestructive method of DNA extraction.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Experiments with nestling blue tits Parus caeruleus L. examined the effects of feeding them 7-spot ladybird Coccinella septempunctata (L.), 2-spot ladybird Adalia bipunctata (L.) or controls Tenebrio sp.
2. A feeding rate of 51/3 7-spot ladybirds per day 'killed' nestlings within 2 days. Three of six nestlings fed at half this rate survived 4 days. In contrast, all experimental birds survived sixty-four 2-spot ladybirds fed over 4 days (equivalent by weight to the high 7-spot diet).
3. Nestlings fed 7-spot ladybirds also grew more slowly than birds fed 2-spot ladybirds. The latter birds showed no difference in weight gain from the controls although they begged more strongly for food.
4. Cadavers of birds fed 7-spot ladybirds showed evidence of severe liver damage.
5. The results indicate a substantial difference between the ladybird species in their toxicity to nestling blue tits. They support the hypothesis that 2-spot ladybirds are largely-edible, polymorphic Batesian mimics of well-protected, monomorphic species such as the 7-spot ladybird.  相似文献

Two predaceous species of Coccinellidae, Menochilus sexmaculatus and Coccinella transversalis , occurred abundantly in bean crops infested with the aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch in north-east India. The number of eggs and adults of the two coccinellids increased in response to the increase in the population of aphid prey. Reproductive numerical responses were found to be synchronous to prey density whereas aggregative numerical responses appeared asynchronous in the later part of the aphid cycle on beans. Menochilus sexmaculatus oviposited smaller clusters of eggs at lower density of aphids than C. transversalis which laid larger clusters and showed greater numerical response at higher densities of aphids. Within a species cluster the size of the eggs seems to be directly related to aphid density. The two coccinellid species of this study seem to be efficient predators of A. craccivora in terms of their reproductive and aggregative numerical responses.  相似文献

1 Insects using olfactory stimuli to forage for prey/hosts are proposed to encounter a ‘reliability–detectability problem’, where the usability of a stimulus depends on its reliability as an indicator of herbivore presence and its detectability. 2 We investigated this theory using the responses of female seven‐spot ladybirds Coccinella septempunctata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) to plant headspace chemicals collected from the peach‐potato aphid Myzus persicae and four commercially available Brassica cultivars; Brassica rapa L. cultivar ‘turnip purple top’, Brassica juncea L. cultivar ‘red giant mustard’, Brassica napus L. cultivar ‘Apex’, Brassica napus L. cultivar ‘Courage’ and Arabidopsis thaliana. For each cultivar/species, responses to plants that were undamaged, previously infested by M. persicae and infested with M. persicae, were investigated using dual‐choice Petri dish bioassays and circular arenas. 3 There was no evidence that ladybirds responded to headspace chemicals from aphids alone. Ladybirds significantly preferred headspace chemicals from B. napus cv. Apex that were undamaged compared with those from plants infested with aphids. For the other four species/cultivars, there was a consistent trend of the predators being recorded more often in the half of the Petri dish containing plant headspace chemicals from previously damaged and infested plants compared with those from undamaged ones. Furthermore, the mean distance ladybirds walked to reach aphid‐infested A. thaliana was significantly shorter than to reach undamaged plants. These results suggest that aphid‐induced plant chemicals could act as an arrestment or possibly an attractant stimulus to C. septempunctata. However, it is also possible that C. septempunctata could have been responding to aphid products, such as honeydew, transferred to the previously damaged and infested plants. 4 The results provide evidence to support the ‘reliability–detectability’ theory and suggest that the effectiveness of C. septempunctata as a natural enemy of aphids may be strongly affected by which species and cultivar of Brassica are being grown.  相似文献

The potential of four co-occurring ladybirds, Coccinella septempunctata (L.), Coccinella transversalis (F.), Cheilomenes sexmaculata (F.), and Propylea dissecta (Mulsant), as predators of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) was investigated. Coccinella magnifica is an obligate associate of Formica rufa-group ants. The congener Coccinella septempunctata can serve as a model for its nonmyrmecophilous ancestor. Formica rufa behavior toward these two ladybirds, and their behavior, was compared. Although C. magnifica was rarely attacked on ant trails, it was usually attacked on tended aphid colonies. Coccinella septempunctata was more readily attacked. The two ladybirds' behavior was similar on trails, but C. magnifica used more defense and C. septempunctata more rapid escape behavior on aphid colonies. Only C. magnifica fed upon tended aphids. Chemical adaptation to overcome ant aggression probably exists in C. magnifica, but it possesses almost no novel behaviors to counter ant aggression. Instead, modifications have occurred in the expression of behaviors present in C. septempunctata.  相似文献

【目的】印度次大陆是世界上最脆弱的地理景观。气候条件的略微变动可能对其季节周期可能产生不良影响,并引起农业生态系统中蚜虫的大暴发。七星瓢虫Coccinella septempunctata L.和狭臀瓢虫C.transversalis Fab.是该次大陆上广泛分布、同域发生的两种食蚜性瓢虫。【方法】设计异地试验,来探究同种和/或异种组合时的这两种瓢虫用共同的猎物资源(豌豆蚜)饲养时,对增加的温度(15,20,25,30和35℃)和光周期(8L∶16D,12L∶12D和16L∶8D)的响应。【结果】结果表明,在这5个不同温度和3个不同光周期条件下,同种或异种组合时这两种瓢虫表现出了拮抗作用。尽管表现出拮抗作用,但是同种或异种组合的两捕食动物在25℃和长光周期(16L∶8D)条件下消耗、转化和利用的猎物生物量最大。然而,它们的猎物消耗率、转化效率和生长速率在异种组合中最高。在5个不同温度下,4龄幼虫均更有效地利用猎物生物量,将其转变成自身生物量,而雌成虫在3个不同光周期条件下也是如此。【结论】因此可以推断,增加的温度和光周期条件可能不会阻止同种和异种组合中的瓢虫发生拮抗作用,但是在25℃和长光周期(16L∶8D)条件下,相互作用的瓢虫的猎物消耗量和利用率为最佳。  相似文献

C-banded karyotypes were studied in the males of seven ladybird species from the subfamily Coccinellinae, viz. Adonia variegata (Goeze), Tythaspis sedecimpunctata (L.), Coccinella septempunctata (L.), Calvia decemguttata (L.), Calvia quatuordecimguttata (L.), Propylea quatuordecimpunctata (L.), Phyllobora vigintiduopunctata (L.). All the species, with the exception of Tythaspis sedecimpunctata (L.), possess 2n = 20, n(male) = 9 + Xy(p). Tythaspis sedecimpunctata (L.), however, has 2n = 24, n(male) = 11+Xy. The examined karyotypes show only a paracentromeric position of constitutive heterochromatin in all autosomes and the sex chromosome X, while the y heterochromosome is dot-like and wholly euchromatic. Fungal entomopathogens are ubiquitous within the environment and susceptible insects are predicted to be under strong selection pressure to detect and avoid virulent isolates. Beauveria bassiana is an entomopathogenic fungus with a wide host range including coccinellids. Seven-spot ladybirds, Coccinella septempunctata, overwinter predominantly in leaf litter and B. bassiana is one of their major mortality factors during winter in temperate regions. Behavioural assays were conducted to assess the ability of adult C. septempunctata to avoid lethal densities of B. bassiana conidia in soil or on leaves. Further assays considered avoidance by C. septempunctata of mycosed (B. bassiana) C. septempunctata cadavers compared with uninfected C. septempunctata cadavers or in vitro B. bassiana. Treatments in any bioassays entirely avoided by C. septempunctata were regarded as censored data, to overcome the difficulties associated with zeros in log-ratio analyses. Male and female C. septempunctata avoided contact with leaf surfaces and soil inoculated with B. bassiana and mycosed cadavers. The ability of C. septempunctata to detect and avoid B. bassiana conidia is an adaptation that undoubtedly increases survival and ultimately fitness. We predict that such behavioural responses are widespread and driven by the high cost of fungal infection to a host.  相似文献

Most ladybirds (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) possess chemical protection against predators and signal its presence by less or more conspicuous coloration, which can be considered as a warning. Most ladybirds possess a dotted pattern, althougn the number, shape, and size of the spots, as well as their colour, varies considerably. Almost all ladybirds have a characteristic general appearance (body shape). We considered these traits to be used in ladybird recognition by avian predators. In the present study, we compared the reactions of avian predators ( Parus major ) caught in the wild, to four differently coloured ladybird beetles ( Coccinella septempunctata , Exochomus quadripustulatus , Subcoccinella vigintiquatuorpunctata , and Cynegetis impunctata ) and two artificial modifications of C. septempunctata ; the first was deprived of their elytral spotted pattern by painting it brown, the other had their elytra removed (i.e. altering their general ladybird appearance). Ladybirds with a spotted pattern were attacked less frequently than unspotted ones. Ladybirds with removed elytra were attacked much more often than any ladybird with a preserved general appearance. The results obtained in the present study suggest the high importance of the spotted pattern as well as general appearance in the ladybird recognition process. Abstract.  1. Studies of Dinocampus coccinellae , a parasitoid of ladybird beetles, have generally shown congruence between field parasitism rates of different host species and parasitoid preference and/or host suitability in the laboratory, suggesting that host intrinsic factors rather than habitat-related extrinsic factors are of greatest importance in determining D. coccinellae occurrence.
2. The myrmecophilous Coccinella magnifica exhibits much lower D. coccinellae prevalence in the field than most other Coccinella species: it has been suggested that this is a manifestation of enemy-free space provided by the predatory Formica rufa group ants with which the C. magnifica occurs.
3. Coccinella magnifica collected at the same time and locality as parasitised Coccinella septempunctata were unparasitised by D. coccinellae . In the laboratory, in the absence of ants, although the parasitoid attacked C. magnifica as readily as C. septempunctata , C. magnifica was not parasitised successfully.
4. Such results are consistent with those from other ladybirds and C. magnifica does not now benefit directly from any putative D. coccinellae -free space provided by aggressive ants. Because its close relatives exhibit high levels of D. coccinellae parasitism, C. magnifica may be useful in determining some elements important in the evolution of host protection against parasitoid attack.  相似文献

【目的】瓢虫科食性高度分化。本研究旨在通过建立七星瓢虫Coccinella septempunctata触角转录组数据库,探讨其触角嗅觉相关基因与食性分化的关系。【方法】采用Illumina HiSeq 4000高通量测序平台对七星瓢虫成虫触角转录组进行测序、组装、注释,挖掘嗅觉相关基因,并与已发表的茄二十八星瓢虫Henosepilachna viginyioctopunctata转录组进行比较。【结果】共获得七星瓢虫触角转录组31 775条unigenes,其中69.71%的序列得以注释,NR数据库中注释最多,为20 539条。据注释信息,挖掘到27个嗅觉相关基因,包括1个气味结合蛋白(odorant binding protein, OBP)基因,13个化学感受蛋白(chemosensory protein, CSP)基因,4个气味受体(odorant receptor, OR)基因,7个味觉受体(gustatory receptor, GR)基因和2个感觉神经元膜蛋白(sensory neuron membrane protein, SNMP)基因。相对应地,在植食性茄二十八星瓢虫转录组中鉴定到38个嗅觉相关基因,包括七星瓢虫中未发现的1个离子型受体(ionotropic receptor, IR)基因。在各类型嗅觉相关基因中,茄二十八星瓢虫转录组的OBP基因比例(13.16%)高于七星瓢虫触角转录组的(3.70%),而七星瓢虫触角转录组的GR基因比例(25.93%)则高于茄二十八星瓢虫转录组的(13.16%)。【结论】触角嗅觉相关基因数目不是昆虫食性分化的主因。本研究获得了七星瓢虫触角转录组学资源,初步探讨了嗅觉相关基因同瓢虫食性分化的关系,为了解瓢虫乃至昆虫食性分化的分子基础提供了信息。  相似文献

Volatiles from mouse carcasses in decay stages ranging from fresh to 33 days old were used to investigate oriented flight and landings in male and female blow flies of Calliphora vicina Robineau‐Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Oriented flight increased significantly from 36% towards fresh carcasses to 68%, 61% and 65% towards carcasses aged 3 days, 6 days and 9 days, respectively. Carcasses aged 20 days and 33 days were significantly less attractive, achieving 51% and 41% attraction, respectively. No differences emerged between the sexes in oriented flight, but a significant increase in female landings at the most attractive carcasses was observed. Headspace collections from the different stages of decay showed a succession in the volatile profile emitted from the carcasses and identified nine chemicals which peak in quantity in concurrence with the most attractive stages of decay. Three of these chemicals also showed dose–response effects as indicated by a significant correlation between the amount present and the proportion of flies responding. Blow flies are important pests and efficient traps are needed. The significant interaction between fly sex and carcass age highlights behavioural differences between male and female blow flies which can be exploited in blow fly trapping. Three new volatile chemicals, butylated hydroxyl toluene, 3‐hydroxy‐2‐butanone and nonanal, emitted from dead mice are suggested as potential attractants.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Two experiments were performed in the laboratory to assess the behaviour of dropping from a host plant as a defence against intraguild predation in aphidophagous ladybird larvae.
2. In the first experiment, encounters were observed on bean plants between fourth instars of the intraguild predator species, Harmonia axyridis , and first instars of two other ladybird species, Adalia bipunctata (L.) and Coccinella septempunctata (L.). The percentages of first instars of the latter two species that dropped from the plant in response to attack differed dramatically, with 47.5% of C. septempunctata first instars dropping vs. 0% of A. bipunctata .
3. In the second experiment, first instars of A. bipunctata or C. septempunctata and a fourth instar of H. axyridis were allowed to forage together on bean plants for 3 h. During this time, 44.3% of C. septempunctata larvae dropped from the plant, but less than 2% of A. bipunctata larvae did so. In contrast, 95.0% of A. bipunctata larvae fell victim to intraguild predation by H. axyridis vs. only 54.5% of C. septempunctata larvae.
4. The significance of dropping behaviour of ladybird larvae as a defence against intraguild predation, and the relationship of dropping behaviour to species-specific habitat affinity of ladybirds, is discussed.  相似文献
