An experiment was conducted to examine the changes in colostral production and composition in Karakul ewes fed at different nutritional levels. Pregnant ewes were randomly allotted to one of four groups (n = 20 per group) 90 days after artificial insemination. Three groups were fed with total mixed rations supplying 90, 100 and 110% of the NRC requirements, respectively, and the last group served as the control feeding on natural vegetations until parturition. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein during late pregnancy, and soon after lambing. Fifteen singleton ewes from each group were hand-milked completely at 1, 12 and 24 h post-lambing. Samples of colostrum were obtained and the lambs were fed with their ewe's colostrum (30 g/kg BW) at each milking. Blood samples were taken from the lambs before receiving their first colostrum, and again at 24 and 48 h post-lambing. Ewes on 110% NRC diet produced significantly (P < 0.01) more colostrum than did the ewes in other groups. Feeding level did not have a significant effect on the IgG level of the colostrums and blood sera of ewes and lambs. Mean IgG concentration in the ewe serum was greatest during late gestation (1–2 months before lambing) and were significantly reduced at 1 h post-lambing. Non-immunoglobulin composition of colostrum was not significantly affected by the treatment. There was a significant correlation between IgG levels of the ewe serum and colostrum (r = 0.64, P < 0.0001). Mean weight of the ewes on the control ration at lambing and the mean birth weight of their lambs were significantly lower as compared with other dietary groups. The results suggested that hand-feeding of Karakul ewes on poor rangeland vegetation with 110% NRC for 2 months before parturition increased colostral production, decreased the ewe loss and increased lamb birth weight which is beneficial to lamb survival.  相似文献

On studying the enzymatic profile of serum muscle specific enzymes (ALT, AST, LDH and CPK) in two sheep flocks one free while the other was endemic with stiff lamb disease it was found that: (1) Serum muscle specific enzymes levels were significantly increased in lambs of the endemic flock when compared with those from the non-endemic one. (2) Vitamin E and selenium administration was followed by significant decrease in enzymes levels in subclinically affected lambs of the endemic flock, while no changes occurred in lambs of the control, non-endemic flock one-week after administration. (3) Lambs in the endemic flock were born with relatively high serum enzyme levels, which began to increase significantly and gradually from the second week of life and up, reaching maximum levels at the fourth week of age. At this age, most of the lambs began to show typical symptoms of the disease. (4) Clinical improvement accompanied with pronounced drop in levels of these enzymes occurred after treatment with vitamin E and selenium preparation in clinically affected lambs.  相似文献

Twin bearing mature ewes (n=40) were treated with exogenous progesterone (100mg daily in oil) or vehicle (oil control) from Day 143 of gestation until lambing to investigate the effects on gestation length, foetal survival and colostrum yield and composition. Compared to control ewes, progesterone treated ewes had increased (P<0.05) serum progesterone concentrations (by 4.3 ng/ml) before lambing and in the first day post-partum (by 10 ng/ml). Progesterone treatment increased gestation length (150.4+/-0.6 days versus 147.8+/-0.6 days, P<0.05) and colostrum yield at 1h after lambing (P<0.05) but the colostrum had a lower concentration of IgG (P=0.02). In the first 24h after lambing, total colostrum and IgG yields were not different between groups. Four (20%) of the progesterone treated ewes produced either one or two dead lambs, while one ewe died on day 155 without initiating the birth process. We conclude that the daily administration of 100mg progesterone resulted in extended gestation length and reduced lamb survival but did not lower colostrum yield.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the immunoglobulin G (IgG) absorption by Santa Ines lambs under two colostrum management systems usually used by producers. Twenty-seven Santa Ines newborn lambs received two meals of 250 ml of bovine colostrum from Holstein cows (BC group) or ovine colostrum from Santa Ines ewes (OC group) at 0 and 6 h of life. Pools of BC and OC were analyzed by radial immunodiffusion to quantify IgG. Results are expressed as least-square means and standard errors of mean (means ± s.e.m.). The concentration of IgG in bovine and ovine pools averaged 115.7 ± 20.5 and 48.1 ± 5.0 mg/ml, respectively, levels of concentration found in similar regular colostrum managements. The efficiency of IgG absorption was evaluated under two aspects, maximum apparent efficiency of absorption and total apparent efficiency of absorption (AEAmax and AEAtotal, respectively). The AEAmax was calculated taking into account the mass of IgG ingested just in the first meal of colostrum at birth and the serum IgG concentration at 6 h while the AEAtotal took into account the serum IgG concentration at 24 h of life that reflects the first colostrum offered at birth and the second meal at 6 h. The IgG and apparent efficiency of absorption results were transformed into the square root and log base 10, respectively, and were presented as geometric least-square means. In BC, lower (P < 0.05) AEAmax and AEAtotal were verified (14.2% and 15.6%, respectively), in relation to OC (23.6% and 24.4%, respectively). Serum IgG concentrations at 24 h were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in BC (31.4 mg/ml, respectively) compared with OC (22.2 mg/ml, respectively). The results in this study confirm that there is a limitation to the process of IgG absorption by the enterocytes of newborn lambs, which determined a nonlinear behavior of passive immunity acquisition. Similar values of AEAmax and AEAtotal for the two sources of colostrum reveal that the process of IgG absorption from the first and second meals during the first 6 h of life did not change and indicates that the ingestion of a second feeding of quality colostrum can enhance the acquisition of immune protection of newborn lambs.  相似文献

The turnover rate and pool volume of radiolabelled autologous IgG1 was similar to homologous IgG1 in adult sheep. In neonatal lambs there was no significant difference for either of these parameters between homologous serum IgG1 and maternal colostrum IgG1. However, the pool volume for IgG1 expanded by approx. 30% over the experimental period in the lambs. When the turnover rates were corrected for this increase they were found to be similar to those observed for IgG1 in adult animals.  相似文献

The possibility that thermal cues play a part in the teat-seeking behaviour of newly-born lambs was investigated. Measurements show that the external surfaces of a lactating ewe vary in temperature, highest readings being obtained from the inguinal cavity at the base of the udder. Experiments show that, before sucking, lambs stay longer in a warm compartment than in a cool one, also that they become more active when their muzzles are placed in contact with a warm smooth surface than they do when placed in contact with a cool smooth surface. The activity evoked resembles that of newlyborn lambs searching for the teat.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the BW and immune status of lambs reared under natural conditions or under artificial conditions fed two different colostrum amounts. In this study, 60 lambs were randomly divided into groups according to treatment. Twenty lambs remained with their dams (natural rearing (NR) group). Forty lambs were removed from their dams at birth. Lambs were bottle-fed with a pool of sheep colostrum, receiving either 4 g of IgG/kg of BW at birth (C4 group) or 8 g of IgG/kg of BW at birth (C8 group). The total colostrum amount was equally divided into three meals at 2, 14 and 24 h after birth. After this period, lambs were bottle-fed a commercial milk replacer. Blood plasma sample analysis and BW recordings were carried out before feeding at birth and then at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 20 days after birth. Another blood sample analysis and BW recording was carried out when animals reached 10 kg of BW. During weaning (30 days), sampling was carried out every 5 days. Blood plasma was used to determine the concentrations of IgG and IgM and the complement system activity – total and alternative pathways. The NR group showed greater BW than the C4 and C8 groups during milk feeding period, whereas the C4 and C8 groups had greater BW than the NR group at the end of weaning period. The C8 and NR groups had greater plasma IgG and IgM concentrations than the C4 group during milk feeding period. In addition, C4 and C8 groups showed similar IgG concentrations and greater IgM concentrations than the NR group at the end of the weaning period. Complement system activity was greater in the NR group than in the C4 and C8 groups during the first 3 days after birth. In conclusion, lambs fed amounts of colostrum equivalent to 8 g of IgG/kg of BW showed similar immune variables compared to lambs reared under natural conditions, obtaining a greater BW at the end of the weaning period. Nevertheless, this study shows that not only the colostrum amount but also the management during the milk feeding and weaning period, such as stress produced by dam separation, milk quality and suckling frequency, can affect the final immune status of lambs.  相似文献

Excess iodine intake by the pregnant dam reduces lamb serum antibody concentration, specifically immunoglobulin G (IgG). An experiment was conducted to investigate the mechanisms under pinning the reduced serum IgG concentration at 24 h postpartum in the progeny of iodine supplemented dams. Forty-five mature twin bearing ewes (n=15/treatment) were allocated to one of three dietary treatments as follows: basal diet (Control); basal diet plus 26.6 mg of iodine per ewe per day as calcium iodate (CaIO3); or potassium iodide (KI). Ewes were individually housed and fed from d 119 of gestation until parturition. All lambs received colostrum at 1, 10 and 18 h postpartum via stomach tube. At 1 h postpartum lambs from the control and an iodine supplemented treatment (n=10 per treatment from control and CaIO3) were euthanised before colostrum consumption and ileal segments isolated to determine the gene expression profile of a panel of genes identified as having a role in antibody transfer. Preceding euthanasia, lambs were blood sampled for determination of serum IgG, total thyroxine and free tri-iodothyronine concentrations. Progeny of CaIO3 supplemented dams had lower tri-iodothyronine concentrations (P<0.01) at 1 h postpartum and lower serum IgG concentrations (P<0.001) at 24 h postpartum when compared with the progeny of control dams. Iodine (CaIO3) supplementation of the dam increased the relative expression (P<0.05) of the B2M, PIGR and MYC genes in the ileum of the lamb, before colostrum consumption; while the expression of THRB declined when compared with the progeny of C dams (P<0.01). In conclusion, the results of this study show that it is the actual inclusion of excess iodine in the diet of the ewe, regardless of the carrier element, that negatively affects passive transfer in the newborn lamb. This study presents novel data describing the relationship between maternal iodine nutrition and its effect on the thyroid hormone status and subsequent gene expression in the newborn lamb; which results in a failure of passive transfer and a decline in serum IgG concentration.  相似文献

Serum activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AspAT = GOT), alanine aminotransferase (AlAT = GPT), and total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) have been investigated in newborn calves, pigs, and lambs. In the two latter species the LDH isoenzyme distribution in serum was also studied. Blood samples were taken at frequent intervals from birth to 48–72 hrs. post partum. Calves and pigs were born with very low serum enzyme values, whereas lambs showed a picture more similar to what has been reported in human infants. In all species a marked temporary enzyme increase occurred during the first 24–48 hrs. This elevation was found not to be due to colostrum feeding, since a parallel increase was found in starved animals. Possible regulating mechanisms are discussed. The LDH isoenzyme pattern proved to be more stable than total LDH in the early post-natal period. The percentage isoenzyme distribution, however, showed characteristic differences from that found in adult animals of the same species.  相似文献

In sheep production systems based on extensive grazing, neonatal mortality often reaches 15% to 20% of lambs born, and the mortality rate can be doubled in the case of multiple births. An important contributing factor is the nutrition of the mother because it affects the amount of colostrum available at birth. Ewes carrying multiple lambs have higher energy requirements than ewes carrying a single lamb and this problem is compounded by limitations to voluntary feed intake as the gravid uterus compresses the rumen. This combination of factors means that the nutritional requirements of the ewe carrying multiple lambs can rarely be met by the supply of pasture alone. This problem can overcome by supplementation with energy during the last week of pregnancy, a treatment that increases colostrum production and also reduces colostrum viscosity, making it easier for the neonatal lamb to suck. In addition, litter size and nutrition both accelerate the decline in concentration of circulating progesterone that, in turn, triggers the onsets of both birth and lactogenesis, and thus ensures the synchrony of these two events. Furthermore, the presence of colostrum in the gut of the lamb increases its ability to recognize its mother, and thus improves mother–young bonding. Most cereal grains that are rich in energy in the form of starch, when used as supplements in late pregnancy will increase colostrum production by 90% to 185% above control (unsupplemented) values. Variation among types of cereal grain in the response they induce may be due to differences in the amount of starch digested post-ruminally. As a percentage of grain dry matter intake, the amount of starch entering the lower digestive tract is 14% for maize, 8.5% for barley and 2% for oats. Supplements of high quality protein from legumes and oleiferous seeds can also increase colostrum production but they are less effective than cereal grains. In conclusion, short-term supplementation before parturition, particularly with energy-rich concentrates, can improve colostrum production, help meet the energy and immunological requirements for new-born lambs, and improve lamb survival.  相似文献

Behavioural effects of tactile stimulation were investigated in newly-born lambs, which had, or had not, been suckled. A smooth or woolly, warm or cold stimulus which covered one side of the face elicited in unsuckled lambs a forceful response resembling its teat-seeking approach to the dam: vigorous forward and upward head movements, munching and sucking. Smaller amounts of tactile stimulation applied at discrete facial sites showed that most head movements occurred in response to touch on the upper surfaces of the face and most oral activity in response to touch on the muzzle. The response to touch was less in lambs which had been suckled, even when age was kept constant. Results are discussed in terms of the natural situation and of the response to touch in the 40–80 day foetus.  相似文献

This experiment tested the hypothesis that a lift in the nutrition of ewes, before lambing, to increase colostrum production would enhance lamb survival. In all, 261 mature Corriedale ewes, each with a single fetus from a synchronised mating, grazed native pasture to day 130 after mating; at which point they were weighed, condition scored and allocated to graze either native pasture or a pasture dominant with Lotus uliginosus. Five days later (14 days before the expected start of lambing) the ewes were allocated to one of four treatments and fed: (i) native pasture alone, (ii) native pasture plus a commercial high-energy lick, (iii) L. uliginosus pasture alone or (iv) L. uliginosus pasture plus whole maize. The weight, viscosity and concentration of components and immunoglobulin G in the colostrum that had accumulated at parturition, were measured for 10 ewes in each treatment. The lambs that survived to 20 days of age from the 221 ewes that were not milked, were recorded. The ewes supplemented with the lick or maize grain and those that grazed the L. uliginosus pasture alone accumulated two to three times more colostrum at birth than the ewes that grazed native pasture alone (396, 635 and 662 g v. 206 g; P < 0.01). The colostrum from the ewes that grazed only native pasture was more viscous (lower score) than that from the ewes supplemented with the lick or maize grain or the ewes that grazed the L. uliginosus pasture alone (scores of 4.1 v. 6.2, 6.5 and 6.4, P < 0.001) and, not surprisingly, the concentration of lactose in the colostrum of the ewes fed only native pasture was also much lower (1.1% v. 3.0%, 2.8% and 2.6%; P < 0.001)he survival of lambs from the ewes fed only native pasture was less than that of the lambs from ewes fed native pasture plus the commercial lick (81.8% v. 95.5%; P < 0.05) or the L. uliginosus pasture alone (92.4%, P < 0.05), and also tended to be lower than that for lambs born to ewes fed L. uliginosus pasture plus maize (91.8%, P = 0.08). The concentration of glucose in the blood of the lambs from the ewes that grazed only native pasture was lower than that of the other lambs (42.1 v. 60.2 ng/ml, P = 0.012). We conclude that the marked increase in colostrum production associated with the lift in ewe nutrition, just prior to lambing, enhanced lamb survival.  相似文献

Summary The growth stimulating properties of bovine serum and colostrum were compared in rat hepatoma (HTC) and glioma (C6) cell cultures. A colostrum concentration of 2% was optimal for HTc cells, which then reached a terminal density 40% of that in serum-supplemented medium. The corresponding figures for C6 cells were 10 and 81%, respectively. After 4 d in culture, levels of lipid hydroperoxides were measured and compared. Highest levels of lipid hydroperoxides were found in HTC and C6 cells grown in unsupplemented medium. HTC and C6 cells grown in serum supplemented medium contained levels of 52 and 64%, respectively, of that in unsupplemented medium. The corresponding levels for cells grown in presence of colostrum were 40% for HTC and 44% for C6 cells. To obtain information on any functional alterations in the cells due to the presence of colostrum the induction of tyrosine aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.5) and glutamine synthetase (EC 6.3.1.2), by dexamethasone was studied. Although colostrum seemed to increase, the basal activities of the enzymes, no significant effects on the degree of induction could be detected. Artificial rearing of young animals represents a challenge in modern ruminant production systems. This work aims to evaluate the short- and long-term effects of the type of rearing on the animal’s health, growth, feed utilization and carcass performance. A total of 24 pregnant ewes carrying triplets were used. Within each triplet set, lambs were randomly allocated to one experimental treatment: natural rearing on the ewe (NN); ewe colostrum for 24 h followed by artificial rearing with milk replacer (NA) and 50 g of colostrum alternative supplementation followed by artificial rearing (AA). Milk replacer, ryegrass hay and creep feed were offered ad libitum, and each experimental group was kept in independent pens until weaning at 45 days of age. After weaning all lambs were placed together on the same pasture for fattening for 4 months. Blood samples were taken at 24 h after birth, at weaning and at the end of the fattening period (23 weeks). Results showed that no failure in the passive immune transfer was detected across treatments. Although artificially reared lambs at weaning had lower plasma levels of β-hydroxy-butyrate (−62%), high-density lipoproteins (−13%) and amylase (−25%), and higher levels of low-density lipoproteins (+38%) and alkaline phosphatase (+30%), these differences disappeared during the fattening period. Only the greater levels of calcium and the lower levels of haemoglobin and white blood cells detected at weaning in artificially reared lambs (+7.2%, −2.8% and −17.8%) persisted by the end of the fattening period (+4.3%, −3.3% and −9.5%, respectively). Minor diarrheal events from weeks 2 to 5 were recorded with artificial rearing, leading to lower growth rates during the 1st month. However, these artificially reared lambs caught up towards the end of the milk feeding period and reached similar weaning weights to NN lambs. During the fattening period NN lambs had a greater growth rate (+16%) possibly as a result of their greater early rumen development, which allowed a higher feed digestibility during the fattening period in comparison to NA lambs (+5.9%). As a result, NN lambs had heavier final BWs (+7.0%), but tended to have lower dressing percentage (−5.7%) than artificially reared lambs, thus no differences were noted in either carcass weight or in carcass conformation across treatments. In conclusion, the use of a colostrum alternative and milk replacer facilitated the successful rearing of lambs, reaching similar productive parameters; however, special care must be taken to maximize the rumen development before weaning.  相似文献

A study was made on protein metabolism and hormonal changes following birth in newborn lambs fed amino acids alone or in combination with lactose. Eight newborn lambs taken from their mother immediately after birth were fed hourly for 8 h, either with a solution of peptides and free amino acids obtained by mild hydrolysis of whey proteins (4 lambs; diet AP) or with the same solution + lactose (4 lambs; diet APL). L-[4,5-3H] leucine was continuously perfused into a jugular vein for 6 h when the lambs were 2 h 30 min old. Plasma glucose and insulin levels increased after birth in APL lambs whereas they decreased in the AP; these differences were significantly different. Plasma cortisol levels remained unchanged throughout the experiment. Free essential amino acid levels did not vary when lambs were older than 4.5 h; they depended on the corresponding amino acid intakes. Plasma free threonine, valine, isoleucine, leucine, tyrosine and lysine were lower in APL than in AP lambs. The plasma leucine irreversible loss and leucine oxidation were higher in AP than in APL lambs. The plasma flux of leucine from whole body protein breakdown was lower in APL than in AP lambs inasmuch as the plasma flux of dietary leucine may be estimated by the amounts of leucine ingested in both cases. No significant difference was found for the fractional synthesis rates of tissue proteins such as liver, skin, skeletal muscle, lung, brain and whole body. These rates for skin, muscle and whole body were close to those previously measured in colostrum fed lambs. The increase in whole body protein accretion resulting from lactose feeding in combination with amino acids seemed to result from a decreased protein breakdown that could be mediated by the insulin response.  相似文献

In connection with transfer of sheep from the lowland near Oslo to mountain pastures at an altitude of 1,200 m above sea level, investigations were carried out in 37 animals to study the effect of physical stress on serum enzymes and other blood constituents. The sheep were adult ewes and lambs. About half of the animals had been accustomed to outdoor life on pasture for more than one month, while the others were moved directly from indoor feeding. Blood was collected before departure, after six hrs. of long-distance transportation by lorry, and after three hrs. of subsequent continuous herding on foot. The following blood components were determined: Aspartate aminotransferase (AspAT = GOT), alanine aminotransferase (A1AT = GPT), α-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (HBD), total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), LDH isoenzymes, alkaline phosphatase, calcium, inorganic phosphorus, magnesium, blood sugar, total serum proteins, and haemoglobin. In summary, it may be said that the lambs reacted with greater changes of the blood components than adult animals, and that untrained, indoor fed lambs were distinctly more sensitive than those taken from pasture. The “indoor” lambs showed a statistical significant increase from the initial values in AspAT, HBD, total LDH, the isoenzymes LDH3 and LDH4, and blood sugar. Significantly decreased values were recorded in Ga, P, Mg, and total serum protein. Some of these changes, as in Mg and P, were most pronounced after transportation, while elevations of serum enzyme levels continued to increase during the subsequent herding. Based upon the shift in LDH isoenzyme distribution towards a more cathodically dominated pattern it is supposed that the main origin of increased serum enzyme activity was skeletal muscle.  相似文献

From birth to colostrum: early steps leading to lamb survival   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
New-born lambs have limited energy reserves and need a rapid access to colostrum to maintain homeothermy and survive. In addition to energy, colostrum provides immunoglobulins which ensure passive systemic immunity. Therefore, getting early access to the udder is essential for the neonate. The results from the literature reviewed here highlight the importance of the birth site as the location where the mutual bonding between the mother and her young takes place. Attraction to birth fluids by the periparturient ewe leads to intense licking of the lamb. Grooming not only dries, cleans and stimulates the newborn it also facilitates bonding through learning of its individual odour. Ewes having twins should ideally stay on the birth site for at least six hours in order to establish a strong bond with both lambs and favour lambs survival. However, primiparous ewes or ewes having high levels of emotivity are more likely to exhibit poor maternal behaviour. In addition, difficult parturition and weather conditions have an indirect effect on the behaviour of the mother and are other major causes of lamb death. On the lamb's side, rapid access to the udder and early suckling are extremely important. Delayed lactation or insufficient colostrum yield may be fatal especially since suckling has strong rewarding properties in the establishment of a preference for the mother, which in turn increases lamb survival. Insufficient access to the udder in mothers leaving the birth site too soon after parturition, especially in twin-bearing ewes, could also partly account for the high incidence of loss of mother-young contact and subsequent death in such lambs. Strategies to improve neonatal survival should be aimed at maximising lamb vigour, colostrum production, and mutual mother-young bonding through adequate feeding in late pregnancy and selection on behaviour.  相似文献

The contribution of colostrum to passive immunity transfer and intestinal protection in newborn ruminants is well known; however, it is currently unclear how colostrum intake affects intestinal innate immunity. We investigated the effects of bovine colostrum intake on ileal morphology, expression of genes involved in intestinal innate immunity, and serum concentrations of inflammatory cytokines in newborn lambs. Twenty-seven newborn male Hu lambs were used, of which 18 were bottle-fed either bovine colostrum (C24h; n = 9) or bovine mature milk (M24h; n = 9) within the first 2 h after birth at an intake of approximately 8% of BW; the remaining nine lambs did not receive any feeding (N24h). Blood and ileal tissue samples were collected after the lambs were slaughtered at 24 h after birth. Ileal villus height and villus height-to-crypt depth ratio were significantly higher in C24h than those in N24h and M24h lambs (P < 0.01). Messenger RNA (mRNA) abundance of toll-like receptor (TLR)-2, TLR3, TLR4, TLR6, TLR7, TLR8 and tumour necrosis factor alpha in the ileum was lower in C24h than that in N24h lambs (P < 0.05). Moreover, C24h lambs had a lower TLR3 mRNA abundance (P < 0.01) and a trend of lower TLR6 (P = 0.06) and interleukin 1 beta (P = 0.08) expression compared with those in M24h lambs. We also observed strong positive correlations of tumour necrosis factor alpha expression with that of TLR2 (r = 0.71; P < 0.001), TLR4 (r = 0.88; P < 0.001) and TLR8 (r = 0.83; P < 0.001). Interestingly, the expression of barrier-related molecules, including mucin-13, lysozyme, claudin (CLDN)-1, CLDN2, CLDN4, CLDN7, CLDN12, occludin, zonula occluden-1 and junctional adhesion molecule-1, was consistently lower in C24h lambs than that in N24h and M24h lambs (P < 0.05). These results indicated that the beneficial roles of colostrum intake on intestinal protection in newborn lambs were associated with low TLR expression, which was reflected by improved intestinal development and reduced inflammatory response. Further studies using fluorescence in situ hybridisation and immunohistochemical methods are needed to further explore the mechanisms underlying the lower expression of intestinal barrier-related molecules due to colostrum feeding.  相似文献

The experiment tested the hypothesis that short-term feeding of barley just before lambing would be as effective as maize in stimulating early production of colostrum. Both grains are high in starch, and should provide a substrate for lactose which, in turn, promotes lactogenesis. Thirty-five Corriedale ewes bearing single foetuses and 25 bearing twin-foetuses from a synchronised mating were fed on pasture during most of gestation. Fourteen days before the expected time of lambing the single- and twin-bearing ewes were allocated to three treatments and fed (1) a basal diet of lucerne hay to meet their nutrient requirements, (2) the basal diet plus a supplement of whole barley; or (3) the basal diet plus a supplement of cracked maize. The twin-bearing control ewes accumulated more colostrum than the single-bearing control ewes at birth (292 v. 190 g). However, supplementation with barley or maize increased the colostrum at birth to 360 and 541 g in singles and 648 and 623 g in twins. We conclude that barley is a good alternative to maize to stimulate production of colostrum especially in twin-bearing ewes whose lambs are the most likely to benefit from the supplement.  相似文献
