The abundance, growth, and grazing loss rates of picophytoplankton were investigated in August 2002 in Barguzin Bay, Lake Baikal. Water samples for incubation were taken once at a near-shore station and twice at an offshore station. Contributions of picophytoplankton to total phytoplankton were high (56.9–83.9%) at the offshore station and low (5.8–6.8%) at the near-shore station. The picophytoplankton community in the offshore station comprised mainly phycoerythrin (PE)-rich cyanobacteria, with eukaryotic picophytoplankton being less abundant. In contrast, as well as PE-rich cyanobacteria and eukaryotic picophytoplankton, phycocyanin (PC)-rich cyanobacteria were found in the near-shore station. At the offshore station, growth and grazing loss rates on 25 August were 0.56 and 0.43 day−1, respectively, and on 29 August, 0.69 and 0.83 day−1, respectively. At the near-shore station, growth and grazing loss rates were 1.61 and 0.70 day−1, respectively. These results show that there is a difference in the abundance, composition, and ecological role in the microbial food web of picophytoplankton between the near-shore and the offshore areas in Barguzin Bay.  相似文献

Microzooplankton grazing was investigated in surface waters of the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic sectors of the Southern Ocean by the dilution method. Phytoplankton growth varied mainly between 0.1 and 0.4 day−1, and microzooplankton grazing between 0.0 and 0.3 day−1. Great fluctuations in phytoplankton growth rate were observed at one station within 3 weeks and between closely spaced stations. Microzooplankton grazing rates were similar to phytoplankton growth rate despite the variation of phytoplankton growth rates, although in some cases, phytoplankton growth overwhelmed microzooplankton grazing. These observations suggest that microzooplankton are the main consumers of primary producers, and that steady state between phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing is usually established in the Southern Ocean in austral summer. The influence of the size distribution of phytoplankton on changes in the planktonic food web structures with eutrophication was examined using natural planktonic communities in two world-famous lakes: Lake Baikal and Lake Biwa. The size distribution of phytoplankton and the ratio of heterotrophic to autotrophic biomass (H/A ratio), indicating the balance between primary production and its consumption, were investigated in the lakes of different trophic status. The results revealed that microphytoplankton (>20μm) in mesotrophic Lake Biwa, and picophytoplankton (<2μm) or nanophytoplankton (2–20μm) in oligotrophic Lake Baikal, comprised the highest proportion of the total phytoplankton biomass. The H/A ratio was lower in Lake Biwa (<1) than in Lake Baikal (>1). The low H/A ratio in Lake Biwa appeared to be the consequence of the lack of consumption of the more abundant microphytoplankton, which were inferior competitors in nutrient uptake under oligotrophic conditions but less vulnerable to grazing. As a result, unconsumed microphytoplankton accumulated in the water column, decreasing the H/A ratio in Lake Biwa. Our results showed that food web structure and energy flow in planktonic communities were greatly influenced by the size distribution of phytoplankton, in conjunction with bottom-up (nutrient uptake) and top-down (grazing) effects at the trophic level of primary producers.  相似文献

The ability of photoautotrophic picoplankton Synechococcus to degrade urea was examined in the euphotic zone of Lake Biwa. Samples were divided into pico (0.2–2.0 μm) and larger (>2.0 μm) size fractions by filtration. The rates of urea degradation (the sum of the rates of incorporation of carbon into phytoplankton cells and of liberation of CO2 into water) measured by radiocarbon urea were 8 and 17 μmol urea m−3 day−1 in June and July, respectively, for the picophytoplankton in the surface water, and 196 and 96 μmol urea m−3 day−1, respectively for the larger phytoplankton. The rates decreased with depth, somewhat similar to the vertical profiles of the photosynthetic rate. The urea degradation rates were obviously high under light conditions. In daylight, urea was degraded into two phases, carbon incorporation and CO2 liberation, whereas in the dark it was degraded only into the CO2 liberation phase. The contribution of picophytoplankton to total phytoplankton in urea degradation was high in the subsurface to lower euphotic layer. Urea degradation activity was higher in the picophytoplankton fraction than in the larger phytoplankton fraction. Shorter residence times of urea were obtained in the upper euphotic zone. The contribution of picophytoplankton to urea cycling was 4% to 35%. The present results suggest that the picophytoplankton Synechococcus is able to degrade urea and effectively makes use of regenerated urea as a nitrogen source in the euphotic layer, and that picophytoplankton play an important role in the biogeochemical nitrogen cycle in Lake Biwa. In order to address the top-down effect on the different phytoplankton size-fractions and ciliates, a survey at microcosm scale was conducted in a hypertrophic Antarctic pond, testing the hypotheses that (1) the picophytoplankton is regulated by a top-down control exerted by organisms of the bigger size-fractions, and (2) the nanoplankton fraction (algae and ciliates) is not regulated by a top-down control exerted by the microplankton. The treatments enclosed pond water that was filtered to obtain the different plankton sizes: (a) through 55 μm, (b) 20 μm, and (c) 3 μm pore size filters. The variation in the net growth rate (k′) of the phytoplankton size-fractions and ciliates was analysed after 4 days. The results determined a significant difference (P<0.011) in the k′ value of the picophytoplankton when nano and micro-sized fractions where removed. Conversely, nanophytoplankton and nanociliates were not affected by the removal of bigger size-fractions. We suggest that in this pond the top-down control of the picophytoplankton is relevant, and that the grazing impact is not a key factor in the regulation of the nano-sized (algae and ciliates) plankton components.  相似文献

The species composition, biomass, abundance and species diversity of zooplankton were determined for samples collected from 12 stations in Sanmen Bay, China, in four cruises from August 2002 to May 2003. Growth of phytoplankton and grazing rates of microzooplankton were measured using the dilution technique. The spatial and temporal variation of zooplankton and its relationship with environmental factors were also analyzed. The results showed that a total of 89 species of zooplankton belonging to 67 genera and 16 groups of pelagic larvae were found in Sanmen Bay. The coastal low-saline species was the dominant ecotype in the study area, and the dominant species were Calanus sinicus, Labidocera euchaeta, Tortanus derjugini, Acartia pacifica, Pseudeuphausia sinica and Sagitta bedoti. Maximum biomass was recorded in August, followed by November and May, and the lowest biomass was recorded in February. Similarly, the highest abundance of zooplankton was observed in August, followed by May, November, and February. Grazing pressure of microzooplankton on phytoplankton in Sanmen Bay existed throughout the year, although the grazing rate of microzooplankton on phytoplankton varied with the season. Estimates for growth rate of phytoplankton ranged from 0.25 d−1 to 0.89 d−1, whereas grazing rate of microzooplankton ranged between 0.18 d−1 and 0.68 d−1 in different seasons. The growth rate of phytoplankton exceeded the grazing rate of microzooplankton in all the seasons. Grazing pressure of microzooplankton on phytoplankton ranged from 16.1% d−1 to 49.1% d−1, and the grazing pressure of microzooplankton on primary production of phytoplankton ranged from 58.3% d−1 to 83.6% d−1 in different seasons.  相似文献

Microzooplankton grazing can have significant impacts on the distribution and abundance of phytoplankton, thereby influencing the frequency and duration of algae blooms. Observations of high ciliate abundances in the Suwannee River estuary, Florida, suggest a significant potential for top-down pressure on the phytoplankton community by microzooplankton. We examined the composition of the microzooplankton and determined grazing mortality losses for phytoplankton within the Suwannee River estuary from 2001 to 2002. Our results indicated grazing mortality rates of 1.4 d−1, equivalent to a loss of up to 76% of phytoplankton standing crop and up to 83% of total daily primary production. The microzooplankton community was primarily composed of ciliates, dinoflagellates, and copepod nauplii. The densities of ciliates in the estuary were comparable to densities reported in highly eutrophic ecosystems (9,400–72,800 ciliates l−1). Grazing pressure on small phytoplankton may be further enhanced because ciliates and small dinoflagellates have growth rates similar to those of phytoplankton, and therefore can keep up with surges in abundance. Delaware’s Inland Bays (DIB) are subject to numerous mixed blooms of harmful raphidophytes each year, and Heterosigma akashiwo is one of the consistently occurring species. Often, Chattonella subsalsa, C. cf. verruculosa, and Fibrocapsa japonica co-occur with H. akashiwo, indicating a dynamic consortium of raphidophyte species. In this study, microzooplankton grazing pressure was assessed as a top–down control mechanism on H. akashiwo populations in mixed communities. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (QPCR) with species-specific primers and probes were used in conjunction with the dilution method to assess grazing pressure on H. akashiwo and other raphidophytes. As a comparison, we measured changes in chlorophyll a (chl a) to determine whole community growth and mortality caused by grazing. We detected grazing on H. akashiwo using QPCR in samples where chl a analyses indicated little or no grazing on the total phytoplankton community. Overall, specific microzooplankton grazing pressure on H. akashiwo ranged from 0.88 to 1.88 day−1 at various sites. Experiments conducted on larger sympatric raphidophytes (C. subsalsa, C. cf. verruculosa and F. japonica) demonstrated no significant microzooplankton grazing on these species. Grazing pressure on H. akashiwo may provide a competitive advantage to other raphidophytes such as Chattonella spp. that are too large to be consumed at high rates by microzooplankton and help to shape the dynamics of this harmful algal bloom consortium. Our results show that QPCR can be used in conjunction with the dilution method for evaluation of microzooplankton grazing pressure on specific phytoplankton species within a mixed community. An investigation into the changing phytoplankton biomass and total water column production during autumn sea ice formation in the eastern Weddell Sea, Antarctica showed reduced biomass concentrations and extremely low daily primary production. Mean chlorophyll-a concentration for the entire study period was extremely low, 0.15±0.01 mg.m−3 with a maximum of 0.35 mg.m−3 found along the first transect to the east of the grid. Areas of low biomass were identified as those either associated with heavy grazing or with deep mixing and corresponding low light levels. In most cases phytoplankton in the <20-μm size classes dominated. Integrated biomass to 100 m ranged from 7.1 to 28.0 mg.m−2 and correlated positively with surface chlorophyll-a concentrations. Mean PBmax (photosynthetic capacity) and αB (initial slope of the photosynthesis-irradiance curve) were 1.25±0.19 mgC. mgChla −1.h−1 and 0.042±0.009 mgC.mgChla −1.h−1.(μmol.m−2.s−1)−1 respectively. The mean index of photoadaptation,I k, was 32.2±4.0 μmol.m−2.s−1 and photoinhibition was found in all cases. Primary production was integrated to the critical depth (Z cr) at each production station and ranged from 15.6 to 41.5 mgC.m−2.d−1. It appears that, other than grazing intensity, the relationship between the critical depth and the mixing depth (Z mix) is an important factor as, ultimately, light availability due both to the late season and growing sea ice cover severely limits production during the austral autumn.  相似文献

Microzooplankton grazing and community structure were investigatedin the austral summer of 1995 during a Southern Ocean Drogueand Ocean Flux Study (SODOFS) at the ice-edge zone of the LazarevSea. Grazing was estimated at the surface chlorophyll maximum(5–10 m) by employing the sequential dilution technique.Chlorophyll a concentrations were dominated by chainformingmicrophytoplankton (>20 µm) of the genera Chaetocerosand Nitzschia. Microzooplankton were numerically dominated byaloricate ciliates and dinoflagellates (Protoperidinium sp.,Amphisoleta sp. and Gymnodinium sp.). Instantaneous growth ratesof nanophytoplankton (<20 µm) varied between 0.019and 0.080 day–1, equivalent to between 0.03 and 0.12 chlorophylldoublings day–1. Instantaneous grazing rates of microzooplanktonon nanophytoplankton varied from 0.012 to 0.052 day–1.This corresponds to a nanophytoplankton daily loss of between1.3 and 7.0% (mean = 3.76%) of the initial standing stock, andbetween 45 and 97% (mean = 70.37%) of the daily potential production.Growth rates of microphytoplankton (>20 µm) were lower, varying between 0.011 and 0.070 day–1, equivalent to 0.015–0.097chlorophyll doublings day–1. At only three of the 10 stationsdid grazing by microzooplankton result in a decrease in microphytoplanktonconcentration. At these stations instantaneous grazing ratesof microzooplankton on microphytoplankton ranged between 0.009and 0.015 day–1, equivalent to a daily loss of <1.56%(mean = 1.11%) of initial standing stock and <40% (mean =28.55%) of the potential production. Time series grazing experimentsconducted at 6 h intervals did not show any diel patterns ofgrazing by microzooplankton. Our data show that microzooplanktongrazing at the ice edge were not sufficient to prevent chlorophylla accumulation in regions dominated by rnicrophytoplankton. Here, the major biological routes for the uptake of carbon thereforeappear to be grazing by metazoans or the sedimentation of phytoplanktoncells. Under these conditions, the biological pump will be relativelyefficient in the drawdown of atmospheric CO2.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the microphytoplankton assemblages were examined in the coastal zone of Bozcaada Island with regard to some major physical and chemical variables. Samples were collected from May 2000 to December 2001 at four stations. A total of 108 dinoflagellates, 102 diatoms, 1 chrysophycean, 3 dictyochophycean, and 1 prasinophycean species were identified and quantified during the study period. Diatoms and dinoflagellates were the most important in terms of species number and abundance. The maximum values of total microphytoplankton were observed at 0.5 m depth (46.2 × 103 cells l−1 at st. 3) in May as this was the month when the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia pungens bloomed. Chlorophyll (chl) a concentration ranged between 0.08 (August) and 0.78 μg l−1 (February). May was another important month in which chlorophyll a increased (0.41–0.47 μg l−1). Species diversity values (Hlog2) ranged from 1.66 bits (June, 20 m) to 4.11 bits (November, 0.5 m). The increase was attributed to a more balanced distribution of abundance among species. The amounts of nitrate + nitrite (0.6−3.7 μg-at N l−1), phosphate (0.2−0.6 μg-at P l−1) and silicate (0.7−2.5 μg-at Si l−1) were recorded on each sampling occasion. Nutrient concentrations and chl a values of the research area were found to be poorer than those of the many other coastal areas in the northeastern Mediterranean. The mean atomic ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus varied from 1.3 (June) to 12.9 (February). This ratio was lower than the Redfield ratio of 16 for ocean phytoplankton, and phytoplankton was potentially limited by nitrogen for most of the months. The result of this study confirms and emphasizes the oligotrophic nature of the eastern Mediterranean.  相似文献

The composition and ecological role of ciliates and dinoflagellates were investigated at one station in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, during six consecutive field campaigns between March and December 2006. Total ciliate and dinoflagellate abundance mirrored the seasonal progression of phytoplankton, peaking with 5.8 × 104 cells l−1 in April at an average chlorophyll a concentration of 10 μg l−1. Dinoflagellates were more abundant than ciliates, dominated by small athecates. Among ciliates, aloricate oligotrichs dominated the assemblage. A large fraction (>60%) of ciliates and dinoflagellates contained chloroplasts in spring and summer. The biomass of the purely heterotrophic fraction of the ciliate and dinoflagellate community (protozooplankton) was with 14 μg C l−1 highest in conjunction with the phytoplankton spring bloom in April. Growth experiments revealed similar specific growth rates for heterotrophic ciliates and dinoflagellates (<0–0.8 d−1). Food availability may have controlled the protozooplankton assemblage in winter, while copepods may have exerted a strong control during the post-bloom period. Calculations of the potential grazing rates of the protozooplankton indicated its ability to control or heavily impact the phytoplankton stocks at most times. The results show that ciliates and dinoflagellates were an important component of the pelagic food web in Kongsfjorden and need to be taken into account when discussing the fate of phytoplankton and biogeochemical cycling in Arctic marine ecosystems.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that the contribution of phosphoribulokinase (PRK) to the control of photosynthesis changes depending on the light environment of the plant, the response of transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) transformed with antisense PRK constructs to irradiance was determined. In plants grown under low irradiance (330 μmol m−2 s−1) steady-state photosynthesis was limited in plants with decreased PRK activity upon exposure to higher irradiance, with a control coefficient of PRK for CO2 assimilation of 0.25 at and above 800 μmol m−2 s−1. The flux control coefficient of PRK for steady-state CO2 assimilation was zero, however, at all irradiances in plant material grown at 800 μmol m−2 s−1 and in plants grown in a glasshouse during mid-summer (alternating shade and sun 300–1600 μmol m−2 s−1). To explain these differences between plants grown under low and high irradiances, Calvin cycle enzyme activities and metabolite content were determined. Activities of PRK and other non-equilibrium Calvin cycle enzymes fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase, sedoheptulose-1,7-bisphosphatase and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase were twofold higher in plants grown at 800 μmol m−2 s−1 or in the glasshouse than in plants grown at 330 μmol m−2 s−1. Activities of equilibrium enzymes transketolase, aldolase, ribulose-5-phosphate epimerase and isomerase were very similar under all growth irradiances. The flux control coefficient of 0.25 in plants grown at 330 μmol m−2 s−1 can be explained because low ribulose-5-phosphate content in combination with low PRK activity limits the synthesis of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate. This limitation is overcome in high-light-grown plants because of the large relative increase in activities of sedoheptulose-1,7-bisphosphatase and fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase under these conditions, which facilitates the synthesis of larger amounts of ribulose-5-phosphate. This potential limitation will have maintained evolutionary selection pressure for high concentrations of PRK within the chloroplast. Received: 15 November 1999 / Accepted: 27 January 2000  相似文献

A dramatic increase in the breeding population of geese has occurred over the past few decades at Svalbard. This may strongly impact the fragile ecosystems of the Arctic tundra because many of the ultra-oligotrophic freshwater systems experience enrichment from goose feces. We surveyed 21 shallow tundra ponds along a gradient of nutrient enrichment based on exposure to geese. Concentrations of total phosphorus (P) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in the tundra ponds ranged from 2–76 to 2–23 μg l−1 respectively, yet there was no significant increase in phytoplankton biomass (measured as chlorophyll a; range: 0.6–7.3 μg l−1) along the nutrient gradient. This lack of response may be the result of the trophic structure of these ecosystems, which consists of only a two-trophic level food chain with high biomasses of the efficient zooplankton grazer Daphnia in the absence of fish and scarcity of invertebrate predators. Our results indicate that this may cause a highly efficient grazing control of phytoplankton in all ponds, supported by the fact that large fractions of the nutrient pools were bound in zooplankton biomass. The median percentage of Daphnia–N and Daphnia–P content to particulate (sestonic) N and P was 338 and 3009%, respectively, which is extremely high compared to temperate lakes. Our data suggest that Daphnia in shallow arctic ponds is heavily subsidized by major inputs of energy from other food sources (bacteria, benthic biofilm), which may be crucial to the persistence of strong top–down control of pelagic algae by Daphnia.  相似文献

Phytoplankton biomass, community structure and productivity of the Great Astrolabe lagoon and surrounding ocean were studied using measurements of chlorophyll concentration and carbon uptake. The contribution of picophytoplankton to biomass, productivity and community structure was estimated by size fractionation, 14C-incubation and flow cytometry analysis. Picoplankton red fluorescence was demonstrated to be a proxy for chlorophyll <3 μm. Consequently, the percentage contribution to chl a<3 μm from each picoplankton group could be calculated using regression estimated values of ψ i (fg chl a per unit of red fluorescence). In the lagoon, average chlorophyll concentration was 0.8 mg m-3 with 45% of phytoplankton <3 μm. Primary production reached 1.3 g C m-2 day-1 with 53% due to phytoplankton <3 μm. Synechococcus was the most abundant group at all stations, followed by Prochlorococcus and picoeukaryotes. At all stations, Prochlorococcus represented less than 4% of the chl a <3 μm, Synechococcus between 85 and 95%, and Picoeukaryotes between 5 and 10%. In the upper 40 m of surrounding oceanic waters, phytoplankton biomass was dominated by the >3 μm size fraction. In deeper water, the <1 μm size fraction dominated. Prochlorococcus was the most abundant picoplankton group and their contributions to the chlorophyll a<3 μm were close to that of the picoeukaryotes (50% each). Accepted: 27 May 1999  相似文献

Production rates, abundance, chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations and pigment composition were measured for three size classes (<2 μm, 2–11 μm and >11 μm) of phytoplankton from May to December 2000 in deep, mesotrophic, alpine lake Mondsee in Austria. The study focuses on differences among phytoplankton size fractions characterised by their surface area to volume ratio ([mml−1: mm3l−1]), pigment distribution patterns and photosynthetic rates. Particular attention was paid to autotrophic picophytoplankton (APP, fraction <2 μm) since this size fraction differed significantly from the two larger size fractions. Among the three fractions, APP showed the highest surface area to volume ratios and a high persistence in the pattern of lipophilic pigments between temporarily and spatially successive samples (about 80% similarity of pigment composition between samples over seasons and depths). The epilimnetic abundance of APP varied seasonally with an annual maximum of 180 × 10cells ml−1 in June (at 4–9 m). The minimum (October at 12 m) was more than an order of magnitude lower (4.9 × 103 ml−1). APP peaked during autumn and contributed between 24% and 42% to the total area-integrated Chl a (10–23 mg m−2) and between 16% and 58% to total area-integrated production (5–64 mg m−2  h−1) throughout seasons.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to address the top-down and bottom-up controls on different microbial web components (bacterioplankton, picophytoplankton, and >3 μm phytoplankton) in an Antarctic lake. Two experiments using a size fractionation approach and nutrient addition were conducted at microcosm scale (2.5 l). The variation in net growth rates (k′) of bacterioplankton and phytoplankton size fractions was analyzed after 5 days. The results determined significant differences; whereas bacterioplankton and large phytoplankton showed an increase in their k′ when their predators were removed, the picophytoplankton showed a decrease. All the studied plankton components presented the highest k′ when nutrients were added. It is suggested that, in this lake, both the top-down and bottom-up regulations account for the regulation of bacterioplankton and large phytoplankton. As for picophytoplankton, the bottom-up control was evident and grazing did not pose a negative impact and rather, had a positive effect probably due to liberation of nutrients.  相似文献

Landfast ice algal communities were studied in the strongly riverine-influenced northernmost part of the Baltic Sea, the Bothnian Bay, during the winter-spring transition of 2004. The under-ice river plume, detected by its low salinity and elevated nutrient concentrations, was observed only at the station closest to the river mouth. The bottommost ice layer at this station was formed from the plume water (brine volume 0.71%). This was reflected by the low flagellate-dominated (93%) algal biomass in the bottom layer, which was one-fifth of the diatom-dominated (74%) surface-layer biomass of 88 μg C l−1. Our results indicate that habitable space plays a controlling role for ice algae in the Bothnian Bay fast ice. Similarly to the water column in the Bothnian Bay, average dissolved inorganic N:P-ratios in the ice were high, varying between 12 and 265. The integrated chlorophyll a (0.1–2.2 mg m−2) and algal biomass in the ice (1–31 mg C m−2) correlated significantly (Spearman ρ = 0.79), with the highest values being measured close to the river mouth in March and during the melt season in April. Flagellates <20 μm generally dominated in both the ice and water columns in February–March. In April the main ice-algal biomass was composed of Melosira arctica and unidentified pennate diatoms, while in the water column Achnanthes taeniata, Scrippsiella hangoei and flagellates dominated. The photosynthetic efficiency (0.003–0.013 (μg C [μg chl a −1] h−1)(μE m−2s−1)−1) and maximum capacity (0.18–1.11 μg C [μg chl a −1] h−1) could not always be linked to the algal composition, but in the case of a clear diatom dominance, pennate species showed to be more dark-adapted than centric diatoms.  相似文献
