Abstract.  The influence of long- and short-day cycles on ovipostion and egg hatch of the corn stalk borer, Sesamia nonagrioides were investigated at a range of temperatures. Oviposition was suppressed when insects are exposed to long days through their immature stages and then transferred to short days after mating. Moreover, mean oviposition and egg hatch increased from 15 to 27.5 °C, whereas oviposition declined significantly at 30 °C at both photoperiodic regimes. Females derived from a diapausing population exposed to long days after mating showed a significantly higher egg production compared to females derived from a nondiapausing population. However, when females from a diapausing population were left to oviposit under short days, fewer eggs were produced compared to those exposed to long days after mating. Thus, photoperiod appears to affect reproductive traits of this species in a quantitative manner. Larval diapause duration is positively correlated with fecundity of the adults. There is also a positive correlation between pupal weight of individuals derived from a diapausing population and the postdiapause fecundity of adults.  相似文献

Abstract:  The objective of this work was to study the effect of different hosts and temperatures on Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hem., Psyllidae) biology. Citrus limonia (Rangpur lime), Murraya paniculata (orange jessamine) and Citrus sunki (Sunki mandarin) were used as hosts. Measurements included duration and viability of the egg and nymphal stages, sex ratio, fecundity and longevity. In order to verify the effect of temperature on D. citri biology, the duration and viability of its developmental stages and biological cycle were compared at seven different temperature conditions. Durations of the embryonic and nymphal stages were similar for Rangpur lime, orange jessamine and mandarin. However, the nymphal viability obtained on mandarin was lower than the values obtained on the other hosts. Fecundity was higher on orange jessamine and, in all instances, females had greater longevity than males. A fixed number of instars (five) was obtained on the three hosts. Rangpur lime and orange jessamine provided better D. citri development when compared with mandarin. Duration of the egg and nymphal stages varied from 2.6 to 7.7 and from 9.4 to 35.8 days, respectively, at temperatures from 18 to 32°C. Egg viability was higher than 81.6% at the temperature range studied (18–32°C); nymphal viability was higher than 70% at the 18–30°C range, differing from viability at 32°C, which was dramatically reduced. The D. citri lower temperature development threshold (TT) and thermal constant ( K ) values for the egg, nymphal and biological cycle (egg–adult) stages were 12.0°C and 52.6 Degree-Day (DD); 13.9°C and 156.9 DD; and 13.5°C and 210.9 DD respectively.  相似文献

Abstract.  Eggs laid by adult female Dianemobius nigrofasciatus , reared under long-day (LD 16 : 8 h, 25 °C) or short-day (LD 12 : 12 h, 25 °C) conditions from the nymphal stage, are kept at several constant temperatures. At 22.5–30.0 °C, eggs laid by long-day adults show lower incidences of diapause than those laid by short-day adults. In both eggs laid by adults under long-day conditions and those under short-day conditions, the higher the temperature at which the eggs are kept, the lower the incidence of diapause. When eggs of long-day adults are exposed to a low-temperature pulse (10 °C, 24 h) on the day of deposition (day 0), the incidence of diapause increases. The low-temperature pulse on day 1 does not increase the incidence of diapause. By contrast, when the eggs of short-day adults are exposed to a high-temperature pulse (35 °C, 24 h) on day 0 or day 1, the incidence of diapause decreases. The temperature pulses on day 0 are more effective at diapause prevention. Staining of diapause eggs by the Feulgen–Rossenbeck method shows that the eggs enter diapause at the blastoderm stage, which is on day 1 or day 2 at 25 °C. The exposure of adults to long days and higher temperatures prevents the eggs from entering diapause. In D. nigrofasciatus , embryonic diapause is controlled by maternal effects, adult photoperiod and temperature, and egg temperature before or at diapause.  相似文献

The egg and nymphal development, fecundity and survival of the green mirid, Creontiades dilutus were examined at a range of temperatures and a modified day-degree model fitted to the data. Day degree (DD) requirements for egg and nymphal development, and threshold temperatures were calculated from the fitted lines. Female fecundity and longevity, egg and nymphal development, and survival of C. dilutus were significantly influenced by temperature. Eggs and nymphs failed to complete development at temperatures below 17 and at 38°C. Females also failed to produce any eggs at 11 and 38°C. The optimum temperature range for female fecundity was found to be 26–32°C. The optimum temperature for the development of eggs was calculated from the model as 30.5°C and for nymphs as 31.5°C. The threshold temperature for development was 15.8°C for egg and 15.1°C for nymph; 69.4 and 156.7 DD were required for completing the egg and the nymphal development, respectively. At the optimum temperature, it was estimated that development from egg to adult took 15 days. Survival was highest at 26°C for eggs and at 30–32°C for nymphs.  相似文献

Abstract. Acanthoscelides obtectus is atypical of bruchids found in stored seeds because females do not attach eggs individually to host seeds but scatter them irregularly among potential hosts. In other respects, its life history resembles that of other species and comparison provides evidence for the adaptive nature of their behaviour. Individual females differ dramatically in the temporal pattern of their oviposition. The hypothesis is proposed that this is an adaptation to life in heterogeneous habitats. Oviposition is not regulated by host availability to the same extent as in other bruchids, providing evidence that regulation of the number of eggs laid by species which stick eggs to host seeds is an adaptation to the abundance of hosts. The continued presence of males and opportunity for multiple matings does not affect fecundity or egg viability. Females preferentially lay on clean seeds when provided with a choice between them and seeds previously exposed to other adult beetles. However, they do not appear to be deterred by, or cannot detect, the presence of larvae infesting seeds. Other bruchid species avoid such seeds that they can identify by the occurrence of egg cases and pheromones. The number of eggs laid is influenced by the host cultivar available for oviposition. Oviposition by A. obtectus appears to be an adaptation to both storage environments and the heterogeneous environment of a growing crop or uncultivated land. Its behaviour suggests an ancestral condition in bruchids and the changes which might have occurred in the ecology of other bruchid species as they have adapted to become pests of human seed stores.  相似文献

Abstract. These experiments are part of a larger study designed to investigate the influence of husbandry parameters on the life history of the apple snail, Marisa cornuarietis . The overall objective of the program is to identify suitable husbandry conditions for maintaining multi-generation populations of this species in the laboratory for use in ecotoxicological testing. In this article, we focus on the effects of photoperiod, temperature, and population density on adult fecundity and juvenile growth. Increasing photoperiod from 12 to 16 h of light per day had no effect on adult fecundity or egg hatching and relatively minor effects on juvenile growth and development. Rearing snails at temperatures between 22°C and 28°C did not influence the rates of egg production or egg clutch size. However, the rates of growth and development (of eggs and juveniles) increased with increasing temperature in this range, and when temperatures were reduced to 22°C egg-hatching success was impaired. Juvenile growth and development were more sensitive to rearing density than adult fecundity traits. On the basis of the present results, we conclude that rearing individuals of M. cornuarietis at a temperature of 25°C, a photoperiod of 12L:12D, and a density of <0.8 snails L−1 (with lower densities for juvenile snails) should provide favorable husbandry conditions for maintaining multi-generation populations of this species.  相似文献

Abstract:  The endoparasitoid Thripobius semiluteus Bouček was recently introduced to Italy from Israel for the biological control of Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis (Bouché). In this study, some aspects of the biology of T. semiluteus were determined in the laboratory. Developmental time (egg to adult), potential fecundity, realized fecundity, progeny, daily rate of deposition of eggs and several demographic growth parameters were evaluated. Studies of the longevity of fed and starved adults at seven temperatures (3, 10, 15, 20, 23, 25 and 30 ± 1°C) showed that fed T. semiluteus lived longest at 15°C (36.45 days) and shortest at 3°C (1.45 days). Longevity was reduced significantly at higher and lower temperatures than 15°C and when honey was not provided. Development time was measured at six temperatures. Pupae did not complete development at 10°C. The lower theoretical temperature threshold was 9.0°C; the optimum developmental temperature and the upper lethal threshold were 28.0°C and 34.1°C respectively. The most rapid development was found at 30°C, but waSPS suffered significantly higher mortality at this temperature than at other temperatures. Ovigeny index showed that T. semiluteus is synovigenic, with a mean realized fecundity of 78.8 eggs per female. The mean progeny was 68.2 adults per female on fed adults.  相似文献

Flushing of ballast tanks with seawater has been proposed to reduce the risk of invasion associated with residual ballast in 'no ballast on board' ships. The efficacy of this procedure, however, has not been determined. Using diapausing eggs isolated from ballast sediments — as well as from Lake Erie sediment — this study investigated the impact of salinity (0, 8 and 35‰) and temperature (10, 20 and 30 °C) on the cumulative abundance and species richness of hatched zooplankton taxa. The rate and amount of hatching varied dramatically between sediments and across salinity–temperature regimes. Although exposure to saline water inhibited emergence of freshwater taxa during the exposure phase of all trials, mixed results were evident after diapausing eggs were returned to freshwater. The efficacy of salinity as a ballast treatment method was temperature dependent, although the direction of the effect was case-specific. Exposure of eggs to saline water was less effective at 10 and 30 °C than at 20 °C. Although flushing ballast tanks with open ocean water is expected to significantly reduce the number of active invertebrates living in residual ballast water (a potentially larger source of invaders), our results indicate that the most effective treatment conditions for reduction of diapausing egg viability is 8‰ salinity at 20 °C.  相似文献

The larvae of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) of different ages were exposed to various concentrations viz., 0.0001, 0.001 and 0.01 ppm of triflumuron up to pupation. The adults were allowed to feed on untreated diet. The preoviposition period, fecundity, egg viability and incubation period of the eggs laid were studied. Triflumuron significantly lengthened the preoviposition and incubation periods (P < 0.001). Fecundity and egg viability were also reduced (P < 0.001) due to the treatment. Both the strains were affected by the treatment.  相似文献

In the present study, we observed the effect of age of Episyrphus balteatus DeGeer (Diptera, Syrphidae) females on their fecundity and fertility (number and percentage of fertile eggs). Eight newborn E. batteatus couples were placed in separated cages (30 cm x 30 cm x 60 cm) and the number of eggs laid and the egg viability were recorded daily during 45 days. E. balteatus females had a pre-oviposition period of 10 days before mating happened. The fecundity increased steadily from day 11 to day 16 with an average of 30 eggs a day. During the following days (from day 23 to day 45), we found that the optimal fecundity was observed every second day and that 70.47% of the eggs laid during the entire life of the females were fertile. We also found that the fertility decreased significantly when the females were older than 38 days. As result, the age of hoverfly females influence significantly on their reproduction, with suggesting that hoverfly females from 2 to 5 weeks old are important agents for biological control programs.  相似文献

The fecundity, embryonic development, growth and viability of captive Chiloscyllium punctatum were investigated over two breeding and laying seasons. Chiloscyllium punctatum is an oviparous species, which lays rectangular eggs from late July to February. The six adult female C. punctatum in the open ocean display tank at UnderWater World, Mooloolaba, Australia laid a total of 692 eggs between July 2004 and February 2006, with 228 of those being viable. This equates to each female laying 115·3 eggs over the two seasons, with 38 viable. The embryos are first visible to the naked eye at c . 18 days post deposition (dpd), while pre-hatching is first seen c . 35 dpd, and the embryos hatch at an average of 153 dpd (temperature 21–25° C). Embryonic growth is most rapid from 99 dpd until hatching. An average of 21·4% of the eggs hatched over the two seasons.  相似文献

Monthly observations were made on egg production and egg survival of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus , at five sites in northern Queensland from August 1978 to July 1980. Egg production was close to the potential except in the hot, dry season in the drier sites and a model was fitted to explain the data. The main factors that reduced egg production were maximum soil temperature greater than 33.6°C, minimum soil temperature less than 17.6°C, and soil moisture less than 0.26 water-holding capacity when the soil maximum temperature was greater than 37.2°C. The model explains 61% of the variation in egg production from an independent set of data from southern Queensland. Analysis of egg viability at the time of retrieval from pasture indicated that the most important variables reducing viability were maximum soil temperature greater than 25.4°C, minimum soil temperature less than 16.9°C, soil moisture below 0.21 water-holding capacity, the sum of degree-days less than 3.95 per day and stress carried over from the egg production phase.  相似文献

Life history parameters of Amitus fuscipennis MacGown and Nebeker as parasitoid of Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) were determined at 15, 20, 25 and 30°C on tomato using three different methods. For each method, immature development, mortality, longevity, fecundity, oviposition frequency and post-oviposition period were determined and temperature-dependent relations were estimated. Oviposition frequency was also estimated as a function of parasitoid age. Immature development had a maximum of 61 days at 15°C that decreased to 22 days at 30°C. Mortality in the grey stage was less than 2% at temperatures lower than 30°C, where it was 60%. Longevity fluctuated between 3 and 18 days. Fecundity increased from 338 eggs/female at 15°C to a maximum of 430 eggs/female at 25°C and then decreased to 119 eggs/female at 30°C. Oviposition frequency varied between 3 and 46 eggs/female per day and had its maximum on the first day after emergence of the parasitoid. Net reproduction rate, generation time and intrinsic rate of increase were calculated. The intrinsic rate of increase increased from 0.090 at 15°C to a maximum of 0.233 at 25°C and then decreased to 0.159 at 30°C. The influence of the methods to determine the life history parameters on the results is discussed. The results are compared also with the life history of Encarsia formosa Gahan (Hym., Aphelinidae) a parasitoid of the same host. The advantages and disadvantages of the pro-ovigenic A. fuscipennis in comparison with the synovigenic E. formosa are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract.  The present study investigates the influence of environmental moisture on cold hardiness of the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria . The water content of locust eggs kept in soil at 30 °C varies according to the moisture content of the substrate. In turn, it can significantly affect the supercooling point of locust eggs (range from −26 to −14.8 °C) and the mortality when exposed to subzero temperatures. Environmental moisture influences the supercooling capacity of eggs and their survival at low temperature. When locust eggs of the same water content are exposed to subzero temperatures under different soil moistures, their mortality varies between short-time exposure and long-time exposure at subzero temperatures. Given a short-time exposure, mortality in wet soil is lower than in dry soil due to the buffering effect of soil water against temperature change. The pattern of egg mortality is reversed after long-time exposure at low temperature, suggesting that inoculative freezing may be an important mortality factor. It is suggested that interactions between soil moisture and low temperature can influence the cold hardiness of locust eggs, and partial dehydration is beneficial to over-wintering eggs of the migratory locust.  相似文献

Studies on the effect of temperature on the development of the water chestnut beetle, Galerucella birmanica Jacoby were carried out in the laboratory at seven different temperatures: 16 °C, 19 °C, 22 °C, 25 °C, 28 °C, 31 °C and 34 °C. The developmental time decreased with increase in temperature. The developmental time at 16 °C, 19 °C, 22 °C, 25 °C, 28 °C, 31 °C and 34 °C was 96.60, 80.68, 58.96, 43.48, 35.03, 30.08 and 28.02 days for the period from egg hatching to adult emergence, respectively. The developmental threshold estimated for a generation by linear regression was 10.36 °C. The fecundity per female at 22 °C, 25 °C, 28 °C, 31 °C and 34 °C was 102.3, 134.5, 141.2, 130.1 and 116.2 eggs, respectively. Oviposition period ranged from 15.6 days at 22 °C to 8.6 days at 34 °C. Hatchability of eggs was highest at 31 °C with 76.9% and lowest at 34 °C with 57.1%. The highest generation survival rate was 65.3% at 31 °C, and the intrinsic rate of natural increase ( r m) for G. birmanica was the highest at 34 °C.  相似文献

The effects of temperature on the development and survival of Shijimiaeoides divinus barine were examined in the laboratory in 2008. The eggs and larvae were reared at temperatures of 15, 17.5, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C with a long-day photoperiod of 16 h light : 8 h dark (16L : 8D). The highest hatchability of eggs was 88.0% at 20°C, but hatchability at high temperatures of 30 and 35°C was 30 and 0%, respectively. The lowest and highest survival rates from the first to third instar were 18.8% at 15°C and 76.9% at 20°C. Few deaths were observed after the fourth instar. The shortest developmental periods of the eggs and larvae were 4.0 and 15.8 days at 30°C, and the durations of the egg and larval stages increased significantly as the temperature decreased. The developmental zero and thermal constants were 9.6°C and 82.6 degree–days for the egg stage, and 10.7°C and 306.8 degree–days for the larval stage. The developmental period of the natural population of S. divinus barine in Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture was calculated using the developmental zero, thermal constants and Azumino City temperature data.  相似文献

A brief review of recent papers on Tribolium destructor Uytt. is given, and its potential danger as a pest noted. It is shown that 85 % extraction flour leads to about double the fecundity found on 60 or 75% extraction flour. The pre-oviposition period is shown to be affected by both larval and adult food. Unfertilized females lay eggs, but these are relatively few in number, and are all sterile. Oviposition appears to be stimulated when males associate with unfertilized females, and also when they are removed from fertilized females: the presence of five males seems to lead to greater oviposition than when only one male is present, but the use of small numbers makes these conclusions rather insecure. Although copulation occurs at frequent intervals, females will lay viable eggs for as long as 250 days after the removal of the male. Fertility remains virtually constant throughout life when males are present, and is not increased by the presence of more than one male. Fertility varies inversely with the number of eggs laid. The oviposition period is long and the average curve has a characteristic form, despite considerable daily and individual fluctuations. Oviposition may continue until death or may end some weeks before. Poor conditions tend to lengthen both the oviposition period and the length of life, the latter being greater for males than for females.  相似文献

Optimal number of matings in two aphidophagous ladybirds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract.  1. The present study was designed to identify the optimal number of matings required for maximum fecundity and egg viability in two aphidophagous ladybirds, Cheilomenes sexmaculata and Propylea dissecta .
2. For this purpose, ladybirds were subjected to different numbers of matings and the reproductive responses were recorded thereafter.
3. The Gompertz model was used to draw asymptotic graphs for fecundity and per cent egg viability in both ladybird species. Ninety-five per cent and 50% of maximum theoretical fecundity and per cent egg viability were predicted from the model.
4. Ninety-five per cent maximum theoretical fecundity was obtained after 13.25 and 12.95 matings in C. sexmaculata and P. dissecta , respectively; and 8.95 and 11.25 matings were required for 95% maximum theoretical per cent egg viability in C. sexmaculata and P. dissecta , respectively.
5. The results of these experiments clearly support the existence of an optimal number of matings in these two ladybird species leading to maximum adult fitness.  相似文献

Mature common wolffish, Anarhichas lupus L., previously held at 8°C for several months, were exposed to 4, 8 or 12°C throughout the breeding season (November-January). Regardless of temperature, some females ovulated in early-November, but thereafter ovulation was delayed in the 8 and 12°C groups compared with the 4°C group. Temperature experienced by the adult fish also affected egg development and survival even though eggs were incubated at a common temperature of 6°C. The percentages of normally cleaved eggs (at the 32-cell stage) and egg survival to the eyed stage were significantly lower in the 12°C group (8%) than in the 4°C (73%) and 8°C (48%) groups. The differences in egg survival were also significant between the 4 and 8°C groups. Egg survival was also influenced by the length of time the broodfish had been exposed to the different temperatures: at 4 and 12°C there were significant positive and negative relationships, respectively, between egg survival and the number of days for which the female had been exposed to the given temperature prior to ovulation. Temperature experienced by the female did not affect egg size, relative egg weight, fertilization rate, relative fecundity or the number of ovulating individuals. The results indicate that both the timing of ovulation and egg quality of common wolffish are affected by the temperature experienced during the breeding season.  相似文献
