Among rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta)and other cercopithecine monkeys, social groups occupying adjacent home ranges (i.e., members of the same local population) exchange individuals and genes and thus exhibit marked genetic similarities. To assess the degree to which this pattern extends beyond the local population, the genetic structure of M. mulattaand six other primate species was determined using Nei’s (1973) gene-diversity analysis. The genetic similarities seen among social groups in the Dunga Gali population of M. mulatta (Melnick et al.,1984a) can be seen over the entire species range. Comparison of these results with the structures of other similarly organized primate species indicates that (1) the average social group contains most of its local population’s genetic diversity, (2) the average local population contains the majority of the genetic diversity found in the region to which it belongs, and (3) the proportion of species gene diversity found in the average regional population varies substantially between species. Genetic homogeneity within local and regional populations is probably the product of gene flow. The application of a number of analytical models of selection and gene flow strongly suggests that gene flow, genetic drift, and zoogeography offer a more parsimonious and plausible explanation for interspecific variation in regional differentiation than does stabilizing selection.  相似文献

The complete amino acid sequence (703 amino acid residues) of human lactotransferrin has been determined. The location of the disulfide bridges has also been investigated. Computer analysis established internal homology of the two domains (residues 1-338 and residues 339-703). Each domain contains a single iron-binding site and a single glycosylation site (asparagine residues 137 and 490) located in homologous positions. Prediction of the secondary structure of the two homologous moieties of human lactotransferrin has also been performed. The present results allowed a series of comparisons to be made with human serum transferrin and hen ovotransferrin.  相似文献

In the present study, we seek to relate dominance style with group cohesion in a captive group of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). Social data were gathered on approach rate, result, and direction, aggression rate and intensity, grooming rate and direction, and conciliatory tendency. Data were collected using focal animal sampling and instantaneous scan sampling. Reconciliation data were collected using ad libitum observations of aggression with ten-minute post-conflict and matched-control focal observations. Data were compared to prior studies on rhesus (M. mulatta) and stumptail macaques (M. arctoides) living in similar environments. Each species demonstrated the presence of a formalized dominance hierarchy based on the teeth-baring display. The Japanese macaque group showed a lower rate of approach with a higher proportion of negative outcomes than either of the other species. Rates of aggression and reconciliation were also lower in the study troop, suggesting a strict hierarchy while maintaining an optimal nearest-neighbor distance. Overall, this group of Japanese macaques was less sociable than other groups of the same species, perhaps due to a history of individual removals. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

A series of work by the first author have demonstrated that many macaque species show a visual preference for the pictures of their own species when the monkeys actively press a lever to see the pictures. We expanded this study to Sulawesi macaques kept as a pet by local people with slight modification. All seven species of Sulawesi macaques were passively exposed to a variety of colored slides of Sulawesi macaques. The experimenter recorded the duration of visual fixation onto the pictures. Male monkeys of all the seven species clearly watched the pictures of their own species for longer duration than those of the other species. Such visual preference suggested that the seven Sulawesi macaques discriminate each other species and, thus, they may not be integrated into fewer number of species. This visual preference may work to prevent overall intergradation of the Sulawesi macaques who sometimes have hybrid zones only in limited areas. This preference was in general weaker in female monkeys. In one species,Macaca ochreata, females actively avoided to see the pictures of conspecifics. These results may be related to how female monkeys interact with other individuals.  相似文献

Japanese macaques are known to manipulate stones by displaying various seemingly functionless behavioral patterns, including carrying a stone, rubbing two stones together, or gathering several stones into a pile. This form of solitary object play called stone handling (SH) is a behavioral tradition in Japanese macaques, showing striking intertroop differences in frequency and form. Here, we evaluated two ecologically based hypotheses invoked to account for these differences. We hypothesized that the occurrence and form of SH would be affected by stone availability and the degree of terrestriality. We used standardized sampling methods to assess differences in SH and terrestriality among four captive and six free-ranging troops of Japanese macaques, and determine site-specific stone availability. Although we demonstrated that SH is almost exclusively a terrestrial activity, our comparative analyses showed that the number of stones readily available and the relative amount of time spent on the ground by the macaques were not associated with the intertroop differences in the occurrence of SH. Failure to accept the terrestriality and stone availability hypotheses suggests that the performance of SH and the motivation to engage in this activity are both more diverse and more complex than the direct links to time spent on the ground or the number of stones locally available. Other environmental influences and sociodemographic factors should be jointly considered to identify the sources of variation in SH, as a beginning to better understand the constraints on the appearance and subsequent diffusion of stone-use traditions in nonhuman primates. Summary An electrophoretic survey of transferrin variants in 87 species of teleostean fishes showed much individual variation. The majority of the species were polymorphic at the transferrin gene locus, Tf. The clustered distribution of allelomorphs indicated some evolutionary continuity within certain taxonomic families, but this continuity was unexpectedly less apparent within genera.  相似文献

Rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) which were irradiated at ca. 2 years of age with acute doses (less than or equal to 5 Gy) of protons (32-2300 MeV) are exhibiting the late progressive phase of radiation cataractogenesis 20-24 years after exposure, the period during which we have been monitoring the sequelae of irradiation of the lens. The median life span of the primate is approximately 24 years. Analogous late ocular changes also occur in a similar period of the lifetimes of New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) exposed at 8-10 weeks of age to 460-MeV 56Fe ions. In this experiment, which has been in progress for ca. 6 years, we are following the development of radiation-induced lenticular opacification (cataractogenic profiles) throughout the life span. The median life span of the lagomorph is 5-7 years. Cataractogenic profiles for NZW rabbits irradiated with 20Ne and 40Ar ions and 60Co gamma photons were obtained previously. Reference is also made to measurements of the cataractogenic profiles of a short-lived rodent, the Fischer 344 rat (Rattus norvegicus) during the first year after exposure at 8-10 weeks of age to spread-Bragg-peak protons of 55 MeV nominal energy. The median life span of the rodent is reported to be 2-3 years.  相似文献

The genetic variations of 35 individuals of the Shimokita A1 troop of mainland Japanese macaques,Macaca fuscata fuscata, which live at the northern end of the habitat of the species, were investigated using 33 electrophoretically detectable blood protein loci. Among the loci examined, six were polymorphic. The average heterozygosity per individual was calculated as 0.0442. This was the highest value among all troops of Japanese macaques so far investigated. The mainland macaques of the Shimokita A1 troop were more differentiated genetically from other mainland macaque troops than were Yaku macaques, the subspeciesM. f. yakui.  相似文献

1. Some physicochemical properties of transferrin from three marsupials, viz a possum (Trachosurus vulpecula), a kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus) and the quokka (Setonix brachyurus) were studied and compared with those of transferrins from mammalian and non-mammalian vertebrate species. 2. The molecular weight of the marsupial transferrins fell within the range of 76,000-79,000 daltons. 3. The marsupial transferrins were similar to the transferrins of eutherian mammals with respect to optical spectral properties, iron binding capacity and the pH-dependence of iron binding, and iron release mediated by 2,3-DPG. 4. The amino acid compositions of the marsupial transferrins were compared with each other and with the transferrins from the other vertebrate species. The compositions of the marsupial transferrin were closely related to each other, and also showed similarities with transferrins from eutherian mammals and chicken ovotransferrin.  相似文献

Data on distribution of biologically active substances in the turtle optic tectum are compared with results of similar experiments on other reptilian as well as on avian species. In two turtle species (Testudo horsfield and Emys orbicularis), immunoreactivity to monoamines (5-HT and TH), NPY, as well as NADPH-d activity were similarly distributed in neuropil of the SGFS retinorecipient part and in that of the SGP/SAP periventricular layers. Immunoreactivity to neuropeptides SP and m-Enk was maximal in neuropil of the SGFS non-retinorecipient part. The periventricular layers were characterized by the abundant radial SP- and mENK-ir as well as the NADPH-d-positive neurons. Diffusely dispersed ChAT-ir elements and many ir fibers perpenducilar to the tectal surface were observed in the SGFS retinorecipient part; the SGFS non-retinorecipient part contained a dense plexus of thick ir fibers and diffusely distributed ir terminals. The GABA ir cells were the most numerous in the tectum; they were spread in all tectal layers. Thus, various biologically active substances located in superficial retinorecipient tectal sublayers could affect processing and transmission of information via ascending dendrites of neurons in deeper layers. The cells containing SP, m-Enk, and NADPH-d had laminar organization in SGP; via the system of ascending and descending axons, they are able to affect other structures within and outside of the optic tectum. Putative sources of tectal modulatory innervation are discussed. In all studied reptilian and avian species, the principal similarity is revealed in the neurochemical organization. Some differences might be explained by the level of tectal differentiation due to factors of phylogenetic evolution and/or adaptive specialization.  相似文献

The menstrual cycle and some other related aspects of Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) were dealt with in this paper. Almost all the monkeys had regular menstrual cycles only in the mating season, and had no menstrual cycles, or only irregular ones, in the non-mating season. The average length of the menstrual cycle in the mating season was 26.3 ±5.4 days. Many monkeys had a tendency to have their own individual and relatively regular cycles. Ninety out of 108 monkeys kept in the air-conditioned quarters for five years showed “periodical changes” essentially coincident with the changes of outdoor season, and this fact suggests that the rhythm of the seasonal change of Japanese monkeys remains for a relatively long period even if the monkeys are kept in air-conditioned quarters where room temperature and lighting are kept constant throughout the year. Vaginal smear, cervical mucus, sexual skin, etc. were observed in relation to ovulation. These characters showed cyclic changes with menstrual cycles in about half of all cases observed, but ovulation occurred even in the cases in which no cyclic change was observed. Therefore, it was not necessarily easy to estimate the ovulation by observing these characters.  相似文献

1. Transferrins of five cyprinid fishes (Tinca tinca, Ctenopharyngodon idella, Chondrostoma nasus. Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and Aristichthys nobilis) were isolated in a pure state using Sephadex G-100, DEAE-Sephadex and SP-Sephadex. 2. All the transferrins are heterogeneous. In H. molitrix and A. nobilis the heterogeneity is caused partly, but not exclusively, by the presence of sialic acid; in the other species it is independent of sialic acid. 3. Molecular weights ranging from 69,900 (T. tinca) to 78,800 (H. molitrix) were obtained by sedimentation equilibrium ultracentrifugation. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis with beta-mercaptoethanol indicated that the transferrins are composed of a single polypeptide chain. 4. Amino acid compositions of all species were similar, the greatest similarity being in the transferrins of H. molitrix and A. nobilis. 5. Carbohydrate was not found in transferrins of T. tinca and C. idella, but was present in A. nobilis (2.63%) and H. molitrix (5.01%). 6. Alanine was N-terminal in C. idella. No N-terminal amino acid was found in T. tinca, H. molitrix and A. nobilis.  相似文献

Feeding behaviors of Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) were compared between a warm temperate habitat (Yakushima Island: 30°N, 131°E) and a cool temperate habitat (Kinkazan Island: 38°N, 141°E). The composition of diet and the activity budget in the two habitats were very different. Time spent feeding on Kinkazan Island was 1.7 times that on Yakushima Island. Two factors seem to be responsible for these: (1) the energy required for thermoregulation of monkeys on Kinkazan Island is greater than that on Yakushima Island; and (2) the food quality, which affects the intake speed of available energy, is lower on Kinkazan Island. However, monkeys in both habitats increased their moving time and decreased their feeding time when they fed on foods of relatively high quality. Such foraging strategies are predicted by optimal foraging models. Time spent social grooming on Yakushima Island was 1.9 times that on Kinkazan Island, although there were slight seasonal changes in both areas. The difference in time spent social grooming might be explained by the overall difference in feeding time and day length between the two habitats.  相似文献

As the serum transferrin polymorphism was observed in several macaque species, we considered it as one of the best markers for the study of population genetics of Japanese macaques,Macaca fuscata. In this work the genetic variants of transferrin (Tf) of 1,451 blood samples from 37 troops of this species were tested. The troops showing the variation of Tf were Fukushima, Yugawara T, Ihama, Ryozenyama, Mikata I and II, Takahama, Takahama (Otomi), Arashiyama A, Minoh A and B, Kohchi, Mihara, Shimane, and Tomogashima. The wild-type allele of this species was Tf F, and the variant alleles detected in these troops were E, G, G, and H′. The alleles E, G and H′ were probably identical with those reported in several macaque species byIshimoto (1972), but the identification of allele G could not be done.  相似文献

We tested whether infant Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) have a cross-modal representation of their own species. We presented monkeys with a photograph of either a monkey or a human face on an LCD monitor after playing back a vocalization of one of those two species. The subjects looked at the monitor longer when a human face was presented after the monkey vocalization than when the same face was presented after human vocalization. This suggests that monkeys recall and expect a monkey’s face upon hearing a monkey’s voice.  相似文献
