A double-antibody ecdysone-specific radioimmunoassay was used to clarify whether the effects on metamorphosis of the juvenile hormone analogue methoprene are correlated with changes in ecdysteroids level. It appears that a small ecdysteroids peak, 5 days before pupation, is responsible for the transition from inhibition to defective metamorphosis. Study of the changes in ecdysteroid titer in last-instar larvae treated with the JHA 2 days prior to the appearance of the above small ecdysteroids' peak showed an immediate reduction in ecdysteroid level, followed by cyclic, successively reduced titer for about 20 days. After this period the larvae ceased to feed and entered to a diapauselike stage which ended in the death of the larvae. A similar effect on ecdysteroid titer and developmental arrest was exhibited by JHA-treated first-instar larvae. The mechanism of the interactions between JHA and ecdysteroid level deserves further investigation.  相似文献

Unmated E. cautella of both sexes were caged together and the ensuing behaviours of females were recorded, with particular attention to orientations to other insects. Calling females engaged in ‘turning-to-face’ and ‘walking up to’ orientations directed almost exclusively at wing-beating males (flying, or sexually excited and ambulatory). Non-calling, locomoting females engaged in ‘flying at’, ‘landing near’ and ‘walking into’ orientations directed predominantly at wing-beating or resting males, and occasionally at mating pairs or at calling females. The activities of the orienting female led to changes in the behaviour of some target insects, and 4% of all females mated directly after approaching males. Results are discussed in relation to sexual receptivity, locomotory excitation, and the pheromonal control of this species.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the losses provoked by the moth Hyalospila ptychis (Dyar) on green-dwarf coconut trees at Una, State of Bahia, Brazil. Inflorescences of 100 trees were inspected monthly, from April 1997 to March 1998, in a 15 ha orchard. The number of coconuts per inflorescence, fruits damaged by H. ptychis, and fruit losses due to other causes, were recorded. The number of nuts per inflorescence followed a seasonal variation. The average losses caused by the pest were around 2% of the coconuts and the proportion of losses due to other causes was 59,4%. The number of coconuts lost for other causes and attacked by H. ptychis followed the seasonal variation of the number of fruits per inflorescence. The percent of coconuts attacked by H. ptychis was significantly and positively correlated with monthly average temperature.  相似文献

The present investigation deals with the effects of Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. kurstaki on various biological parameters of gamma-irradiated Cadra cautella. The pathogen, irradiation, and their combinations significantly affected the insects by increasing their mortality and developmental periods, reducing the pupal and adult survival (%), and the adult longevity and reproductive potential were also significantly reduced. It was observed that irradiation-pathogen combinations produced additive to synergistic effects on C. cautella.  相似文献

Rearing Technique and Biological Traits of Atheloca subrufella (Hulst) (Lepidoptera: Phycitidae) in Coconut Fruits. Larvae of the coconut moth Atheloca subrufella (Hulst) develop in flowers and fruits of coconut, Cocos nucifera, causing precocious abscission of these structures and, hence, yield decrease. This work studied a feasible and suitable rearing technique for A. subrufella using fruits of coconut. We first determined the appropriate density of larvae to be reared per coconut fruit (among two, three, four or five larvae) and later tested the suitability of this rearing technique for three successive generations. The storage of egg and pupal stages during 0, 5, 10 and 20 days was also studied at 12oC. Based on the fertility life table parameters, the best results were achieved by rearing two or three larvae per fruit as they yielded the best net reproductive rate and intrinsic rate of population increase. In addition, eggs and pupae of A. subrufella can be stored at 12oC up to five days with viability higher than 90%. Adult moths emerged from pupae stored for five days at 12oC produced an average of 219.4 eggs and lived 18.8 days. Storage periods for eggs and pupae over 10 days significantly reduced egg viability and adult fecundity, respectively. Thus, the technique in here described was shown to be suitable for the continuous rearing of A. subrufella in laboratory conditions.  相似文献

Two analogues of insect juvenile hormones (JH) have been shown to interfere with the development of Elminius modestus Darwin larvae when dispersed as acetone solutions in sea water. Stage VI nauplii metamorphosed to morphologically abnormal larvae which were intermediate in size between the nauplius and cypris stages; although these larvae were cypris-like they apparently retained some nauplius characteristics. Cyprids either metamorphosed to non-attached adults or formed larvae which were larger or morphologically abnormal. There was evidence that the effects may be related to the physiological development of the larvae at time of exposure. These observations appear to be the first report of the induction of size and morphological abnormalities in a crustacean species by analogues of insect JH and resemble those arising from the hormonal imbalance which such compounds induce during the development of holometabolous insects.

Summary Protection of stored products such as pistachio nuts, walnuts, almonds and shelled hazel nuts against damage from infestation by larvae and adults of Plodia interpunctella (Lepidoptera: Phycitidae) by radiating these products with appropriate doses of gamma rays, can now be considered. Our tests show that doses of 10 krad applied to last-stage larvae prolong the length of pupal life, reduce the percentage of imaginal emergence and cause regression of the female ovaries. These effects are even more pronounced with doses of 12 and 14 krad. This last dose may well deserve the most attention.

Ephestia kuehniella Zeller is a key pest by severe deficiencies on quantity and quality of stored products. Due to concerns made by synthetic insecticides, use of natural products (like botanical insecticides) is of great importance as an alternative pest management. In the current study, the effect of diallyl disulfide was determined on digestive enzymes and those involved in intermediary metabolism of E. kuehniella. Concentration of 0.31% was obtained as LC50 of diallyl disulfide followed by bioassay experiments. Activities of α-amylase, proteases, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase significantly decreased in the treated larvae, while the adverse effects were observed in case of triacylglyceride-lipase, aspartate aminotransferase, γ-glutamyl transferase, aldolase and acid phosphatase. Results confirmed that diallyl disulfide interrupted larval digestion by lower activities of digestive enzymes indicating significant effect on intermediary metabolism.  相似文献

The effects of juvenile hormone-III (JH-III) and the juvenile hormone analogues (JHA) methoprene and fenoxycarb on the growth and macromolecular biosynthesis in Trypanosoma cruzi were studied in vitro. It was observed that JH-III and JHA blocked growth and 3H-thymidine incorporation without killing the cells within certain concentrations (≤1 × 10−4M), but they caused cellular death at concentrations over 1 × 10−3M. The inhibitory effect on growth was partially reversible. On the other hand, the inhibitory action of JH-III, methoprene and fenoxycarb was an unspecific effect according to the results obtained with Leishmania mexicana mexicana (promastigotes) and human peripheral blood lymphocytes. The JHA have a good possibility of being used in the control of trypanosomiasis.  相似文献

Summary Testis follicles of Lepidoptera contain a large somatic cell termed Verson's cell. The present study focuses on the structure of Verson's cells and neighbouring germ cells in the Mediterranean mealmoth, Ephestia kuehniella (Pyralidae), using electron microscopy, antitubulin immunofluorescence, and phalloidin incubation for the visualization of microfilaments. Verson's cells of young larvae are connected with the follicle boundary and show large areas containing packages of glycogen particles, whereas Verson's cells of pupae lie freely within the testis follicle and are largely devoid of glycogen. Both developmental stages of Verson's cells have in common the presence of a dense cytoplasmic network of microtubules. A juxtanuclear subset of the cytoplasmic microtubule array is recognized by an antibody against acetylated microtubules. This indicates that more stable microtubules exist in this region. Microfilaments are arranged parallel to the cytoplasmic microtubules. The microtubule-microfilament-complex forms a cytoskeleton that may keep larger organelles, such as mitochondria and lysosomes, in a juxtanuclear position. Chromatin within the nuclei of Verson's cells is largely decondensed and nuclear pores are abundant. This indicates a high synthetic activity within the cells. The development of cells directly attached to Verson's cells, viz. prespermatogonia, may be controlled by the Verson's cells. Prespermatogonia, which differ in cytoplasmic density from spermatogonia further away from Verson's cells, may represent stem cells that give rise to spermatogonia and somatic cyst cells upon detachment from Verson's cells. This suggestion is compatible with the low division rate of prespermatogonia.  相似文献

The sublethal effects of pyriproxyfen (PYR, a juvenile hormone analogue) were investigated for two consecutive generations on life-history parameters, such as developmental time, pupal weight, fecundity, fertility and longevity of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). After topical application bioassay of third instar larvae, the LC25 and LC50 values (as sublethal doses) were determined to be 1.49 and 2.01 μg/μl, respectively. The results showed that the egg incubation period, larval and pupal duration times and oviposition period were increased in treated groups compared with the control (treated with distilled water). Pupal weight, adult longevity, fecundity and fertility were significantly reduced in the treatment groups compared with the control. Using the age-stage, two-sex life table analysis, we found that the intrinsic rate of increase (r), finite rate of increase (λ), gross reproduction rate (GRR) and net reproductive rate (R 0) significantly decreased while the mean generation time (T) and doubling time (DT) increased in two treatment groups compared with the control. In addition, administration of PYR induced morphogenetic abnormalities including untanned pupae, larval–pupal intermediates and various defective adults. The LC50 value was more effective on all of the above biological characteristics than the LC25 for both generations, although parents were more affected than the offspring. In general, our results revealed that PYR was highly effective against P. xylostella in the laboratory both directly (causing mortality) and indirectly (disruption of normal growth and development). We conclude that PYR is an excellent candidate for suppressing populations of P. xylostella through its sublethal effects.  相似文献

The egg parasitoid Trichogramma turkestanica Meyer is being evaluated as a biological control agent against the Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella Zeller, in flour mills. The longevity, parasitism and host-feeding of the parasitoid at four constant temperatures (15-30 degrees C) has been determined in the laboratory. The highest fecundity occurred at intermediate temperatures. The number of host eggs killed by host-feeding per female was highest at the two lower temperatures. A very conservative estimate of host-feeding showed that it accounts for approximately half of the mortality of host eggs at 20 and 25 degrees C and thus could constitute a major mortality factor for the flour moth population.  相似文献

We studied the development of Geocoris varius (Uhler) and Geocoris proteus Distant reared on Ephestia kuehniella Zeller eggs at 20, 24, 26, 30, 33, or 36?°C. The lower developmental thresholds (T 0) and the thermal constants (K) of eggs and nymphs of G. varius were 13.3?°C, 151.1 degree-days and 13.4?°C, 433.0 degree-days, respectively; those of G. proteus were 16.1?°C, 98.3 degree-days and 16.9?°C, 226.9 degree-days, respectively. The hatch rate of G. varius eggs was significantly lower at 33?°C than at ??30?°C, and no eggs hatched at 36?°C. That of G. proteus was lowest at 20?°C and did not decline significantly at 36?°C. The survival rate throughout the nymphal period increased with temperature up to 30?°C in G. varius, and it was lowest at 20?°C in G. proteus. Thus, the optimal rearing temperatures for immature stages appear to be about 24?C30?°C for G. varius and 26?C33?°C for G. proteus. It might be possible to improve the efficiency of their mass production by controlling the rearing temperature in the above ranges. This would also make the developmental stages of nymphs more uniform and so prevent cannibalism in mass rearing.  相似文献

AsMatsumoto andHuffaker (1973) concluded that their initial universe size was too small for the proper separation of the effects of host density and dispersion on parasite performance, a larger universe of 38 1/2″ (length) ×38 1/2″ (width) ×3″ (height) was used. When individual parasites were exposed to fixed densities and dispersion patterns of host, they displayed an overall decrease in the parasitization rate when compared to the small universe. In all cases aHolling -type response resulted. When a group of 10 parasites per test was employed a Nicholsonian type of response resulted. In an experimentally confined space, the parasites displayed a mutual behavioral interference resulting in emigration which accelerated as the parasite density increased.  相似文献
