Interspecific hybrids betweenParthenium argentatum, the guayule rubber plant, andP. fruticosum var. fruticosum were evaluated for their potential rubber content and quality. Fifteen-mo-old field-grown plants ofP. fruticosum var.fruticosum measured four times more in height and spread than those ofP. argentatum, but contained less than 0.05% rubber of low mol wt.Parthenium argentatum showed 2% rubber content, with a mol wt of about one million. Resin contents varied little among parents or hybrids. The same age F1 hybrids were intermediate in height and spread and had low rubber content, but showed presence of high mol wt rubber like the guayule parent. This indicates that high mol wt rubber is expressed over the low mol wt rubber in F1 hybrids. Despite low rubber content but favorable biomass production, F1 hybrids revealed irregular meiotic chromosome behavior and low pollen and seed germination. These results suggest that interspecific F1 hybrids may be used in backcross programs to increase biomass and rubber content in guayule.  相似文献

Forty-four chromosome counts from the North American genusCallirhoe are reported, including first-recorded counts ofC. alcaeoides, C. digitata, C. bushii, C. triangulata, andC. involucrata var.tenuissima. Information concerning chromosome numbers from present and previous reports is summarized and evaluated. Observations are presented on meiosis for the genus in general, for male sterile individuals of gynodioecious species, and for selected F1 hybrids. Pollen fertility data are recorded for the latter. Chromosomally three species groups are recognized: an exinvolucellate, diploid species group withn=14; an involucellate, tetraploid and octoploid species pair,n=28 and 56; and an involucellate, diploid and tetraploid species group withn=15 and 30. Intrageneric relationships and those within the tribe Malveae subtribe Malvinae are discussed.  相似文献

A predominantly autogamous breeding system is described forP. occidentale Scribn.,P. pacificum Hitchc. & Chase, andP. thermale Boland. Five synthetic hybrids and three generations of progeny are also described for crosses among these three species. All parents haven = 9 chromosomes and normal meiosis. Hybrids exhibit various irregularities during meiosis, but nine bivalents are usually formed. One population ofP. occidentale and one ofP. thermale were found to have chromosomes with interchanges larger than those of other populations. The F2 and F3 generations had markedly increased fertility, as determined by pollen stainability. It is proposed that autogamy and hybridization are a common means of maintaining and stabilizing genetic variability in these grasses and that these means account for much of the taxonomic difficulty posed by the subgenus. The possibility of a low rate of introgression between populations is also proposed.  相似文献

Rhinanthus minor andRhinanthus angustifolius are known to hybridize in mixed populations in nature. These hybridization events can have important evolutionary consequences. The development and use of species-specific RAPD and ISSR markers allowed the detection of hybrid individuals not always distinguishable with morphological characters. Two mixed populations of different ages were studied. In a young mixed 2-year-old population, both individuals of the two parental species and F1 hybrids were found using genetic analysis, showing that hybridization occurred rapidly. Flower morphology of F1 hybrids was too variable to distinguish all these hybrids from the parental species. This morphological variability of F1 hybrids was also confirmed in artificial crosses in the greenhouse. In an old and no longer mixed 30-year-old population, onlyR. angustifolius plants and a few genetically introgressed individuals close toR. angustifolius were present. Genetic markers showed traces of past hybridization and introgression. Unidirectional introgression ofR. minor intoR. angustifolius with the complete disappearance ofR. minor from this population was observed.  相似文献

The predominantly allopatric species of the genusPicradeniopsis, P. oppositifolia andP. woodhousei, are distinct in morphological, in phenolic and terpeniod chemical, and in cytological aspects (n = 24 andn = 12, respectively). In an area of sympatry in northeastern New Mexico, interbreeding occurs frequently with the production of morphologically intermediate hybrids. Morphological and phenolic chemical data from 191 plants in 40 isolated parental populations and from 91 plants in four hybrid populations are of limited value in determining the nature of this hybridization, but meiotic configurations of 12II and 12I and low pollen viabilities of 1–11% in the hybrids indicate that they are all of the F1 generation (with one possible backcross). The absence of observed introgression, and therefore the absence of gene flow between the two taxa, strengthens the case for taxonomic recognition of two species in the genus. Comparisons of the morphology, phenolic and terpenoid chemistry, and cytology of parents and F1 hybrids suggest that the tetraploid,P. oppositifolia, has arisen by allopolyploidy from a cross betweenP. woodhousei and an unknown diploid species. An extrapolated morphological and chemical reconstruction of this putative diploid parent is advanced.  相似文献

The leaf alkanes of Parthenium argentatum (guayule), P. tomentosum var. stramonium, P. fruticosum var. trilobatum, and the first filial (F1) generations obtained from crosses with guayule were investigated by GC and mass spectrometry and shown to be useful in chemotaxonomic studies. The identified n-alkanes ranged from C19 to C40 with either n-C29 or n-C31 as the main component. The alkane chemistry of guayule with n-C31 being the main component predominated in most of the F1 hybrids. The presence of iso-branched alkanes (C27, C29, C31) in P. tomentosum and its hybrids could be detected by GC/MS. These preliminary investigations indicate that epicuticular wax alkanes can be useful in inheritance studies of guayule and its hybrids.  相似文献

Experimental hybridizations betweenTriodanis biflora (Ruiz & Pavon) Greene andT. perfoliata (L.) Nieuwland result in vigorous offspring in the F1 and F2 generations as well as in backcrosses. Field studies of natural populations indicate a gradient between the two taxa with many individuals resembling the experimental hybrids. Interspecific hybrids between woody Parthenium argentatum Gray (guayule), native to Mexico and Southwest Texas, and herbaceous perennial P. hispidum var. auriculatum (Britton) Rollins, native to the United States, were obtained successfully. The F1 hybrids were intermediate for most morphological characters with the exception of the short woody stem, yellow pollen color, and the trichome morphology. Chromosome counts revealed the presence of 2n = 36 A-chromosomes in P. argentatum. The same number of A-chromosomes and four B-chromosomes were found in P. hispidum var. auriculatum. Observations of pollen mother cells showed regular meiosis in both parental species. At diakinesis, chiasmata averaged 1.12 and 1.24 per bivalent for P. argentatum and P. hispidum var. auriculatum, respectively. Meiotic behavior of the F1 hybrids was irregular. F1 hybrids averaged 4.43 univalents at metaphase I, 1.95 laggards at anaphase I, and 1.62 micronuclei at the tetrad stage. The low pollen stainability (5.1%) in the F1 hybrids and the limited number of viable BC1 seeds (4.07%) may be reflections of the irregular meiosis. Although these primary hybrids are partially fertile, they can be used to introduce desirable characteristics of P. hispidum var. auriculatum, such as herbaceous perennial habit, regrowth ability, and cold tolerance into guayule.  相似文献

An aneuploid chromosome series ofn = 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 inCoreopsis nuecensis Heller was analyzed for morphological, distributional, and genetic correlations with the chromosome number classes. The results show that two sets of basic chromosome numbers occur within what has been treated asC. nuecensis: n = 6, 7 andn = 9, 10. Then = 7 class frequently carries a pair of B chromosomes, forming then = 8 class. The base chromosome numbers are correlated with some minor but consistent morphological differences, with distributional differences, and with strong sterility barriers in the F1 hybrids. It is proposed that then = 9, 10 segment be recognized as a new species,Coreopsis nuecensoides.  相似文献

The garden chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum × morifolium) variety ??Aoyunhuoju?? (2n = 6x = 54) was crossed as female with Ajania pacifica (2n = 10x = 90) to produce intergeneric F1 hybrids, which were used both as the source of F2 generation and as the parent for a first back-cross with ??Aoyunhuoju??. The morphology of all of the F1 hybrids and hybrid derivatives was intermediate with respect to the two parents, although the BC1 progenies resembled ??Aoyunhuoju?? more closely than any of the F1 and F2 progenies did. In the F1 generation, the density of silvery hairs on the lower leaf surface and along the margin of the leaf was lower than in A. pacifica, while that in the BC1 generation, this trait was less prominent than in the F1. The somatic chromosome number of the F1, F2 (with an exception of F2-6 of a mainly 63) and BC1 generations was 2n = 8x = 72, 2n = 8x = 72 and 2n = 7x = 63 respectively, as expected. The hybrids and their derivatives retained a variable degree of fertility. There was a low frequency of meiotic chromosome pairing failure in all three hybrid generations, with most of the chromosomes involved as bivalents. Some BC1 individuals show potential for commercialization thanks both to their flower shape and the inheritance of the silvery leaf trait from A. pacifica.  相似文献

Rapid genomic change has been demonstrated in several allopolyploid plant systems; however, few studies focused on animals. We addressed this issue using an allotetraploid lineage (4nAT) of freshwater fish originally derived from the interspecific hybridization of red crucian carp (Carassius auratus red var., ♀, 2n=100) × common carp (Cyprinus carpio L., ♂, 2n=100). We constructed a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library from allotetraploid hybrids in the 20th generation (F20) and sequenced 14 BAC clones representing a total of 592.126 kb, identified 11 functional genes and estimated the guanine–cytosine content (37.10%) and the proportion of repetitive elements (17.46%). The analysis of intron evolution using nine orthologous genes across a number of selected fish species detected a gain of 39 introns and a loss of 30 introns in the 4nAT lineage. A comparative study based on seven functional genes among 4nAT, diploid F1 hybrids (2nF1) (first generation of hybrids) and their original parents revealed that both hybrid types (2nF1 and 4nAT) not only inherited genomic DNA from their parents, but also demonstrated rapid genomic DNA changes (homoeologous recombination, parental DNA fragments loss and formation of novel genes). However, 4nAT presented more genomic variations compared with their parents than 2nF1. Interestingly, novel gene fragments were found for the iqca1 gene in both hybrid types. This study provided a preliminary genomic characterization of allotetraploid F20 hybrids and revealed evolutionary and functional genomic significance of allopolyploid animals.  相似文献

Five taxa ofSolanum sect.Basarthrum were studied in an effort to clarify their taxonomic position and to determine the effective evolutionary mechanisms. Methods included an analysis of chromosome number and behavior, artificial hybridizations and a study of herbarium material. The data suggest thatS. canense andS. suaveolens are closely related and that 5.suaveolens may have been the progenitor ofS. canense. The only successful interspecific cross involving one of these two species was vigorous but highly sterile. Evidence from both morphology and crossing studies indicates a close relationship betweenS. basendopogon andS. caripense. Hybrids between these two species with relatively high fertility through the F3 generation were secured. The status ofS. basendopogon f.obtusum remains a problem since there is but one collection of the typical form. The placement ofS. sanctae-marthae in sect.Basarthrum is considered problematic. Virtually none of 170 interspecific crosses with this species were successful. Seed size and the presence and size of a seed wing are proposed as useful morphological characters in sect.Basarthrum. There is apparently a correlation between short styles and self-compatibility. All species are diploid (n = 12) and no chromosomal or meiotic aberrations were noted in the species or hybrids. Most of the more than 1,000 interspecific crosses failed. Most of the hybrid fruits bore no seeds or seeds which did not germinate. The primary barriers separating species are considered to be strong prefertilization isolating mechanisms and ecogeographic factors.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Although there is evidence that both allopolyploid and homoploid hybridization lead to rapid genomic changes, much less is known about hybrids from parents with different basic numbers without further chromosome doubling. Two natural hybrids, Narcissus × alentejanus (2n = 19) and N. × perezlarae (2n = 29), originated by one progenitor (N. cavanillesii, 2n = 28) and two others (N. serotinus, 2n = 10 and N. miniatus, 2n = 30, respectively) allow us to study how DNA content and composition varies in such hybrids.

Methods

Flow cytometry measurements with two staining techniques, PI and DAPI, were used to estimate 2C values and base composition (AT/GC ratio) in 390 samples from 54 wild populations of the two natural hybrids and their parental species. In addition, 20 synthetic F1 hybrid individuals were also studied for comparison.

Key Results

Natural hybrids presented 2C values intermediate between those found in their parental species, although intra-population variance was very high in both hybrids, particularly for PI. Genome size estimated from DAPI was higher in synthetic hybrids than in hybrids from natural populations. In addition, differences for PI 2C values were detected between synthetic reciprocal crosses, attributable to maternal effects, as well as between natural hybrids and those synthetic F1 hybrids in which N. cavanillesii acted as a mother.

Conclusions

Our results suggest that natural hybrid populations are composed of a mixture of markedly different hybrid genotypes produced either by structural chromosome changes, consistent with classic cytogenetic studies in Narcissus, or by transposon-mediated events.  相似文献

The older name,C. pachyphylla, has long been associated with the quite remote,C. orizabaensis. Of 851 specimens ofTridentiger obscurus andt. brevispinis collected from Lake Hinuma (Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan) from July 1996 to February 1998, 49 (5.8%) comprised F1 hybrids and backcross progeny of the two species. Since the mitochondrial DNA haplotypes of the F1 hybrids reflected those ofT. brevispinis, most instances of hybridization are thought to have occurred between maleT. obscurus and femaleT. brevispinis. Although both allozyme and mitochondrial DNA analyses indicated backcrossing and introgression of mitochondrial DNA, the frequency of backcross progeny was relatively low, suggesting the existence of a natural selection to backrossing.  相似文献

Senecio smallii andS. tomentosus occasionally hybridize on the granitic flatrocks of the Piedmont of the Southeastern United States. These hybrids are intersectional crosses between sectionsAurei andTomentosi. The parental species have different chromosome numbers withn = 22 inS. smallii andn = 23 inS. tomentosus. Meiosis in the hybrids is abnormal with 22ns and li or 2iis and 3is, and the percentage of stainable pollen is greatly reduced over that of the parents. The hybrid pollen grains are structurally abortive as demonstrated by the scanning electron microscope. Origin of the natural hybrids was documented by the production of artificial hybrids including F1’s, F2’s, and BC’s. Very few of the F2 seeds germinated, and all of the F2 seedlings later died, indicating hybrid breakdown. Seeds of the F1 and BC generations germinated well, and the seedlings were vigorous. Population samples indicate that there is some variation within the natural population systems; however, no evidence of introgression was detected. The isolating mechanisms and possible evolutionary effects of this natural hybridization are discussed.  相似文献
