Einfluß von Phospholipiden auf den Stärkemetabolismus

Summary The presence of phospholipids reduces the breakdown of amylose catalyzed by -amylase, phosphorylase and -amylase. The activities of the -amylases of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) disminish to less than 10% of the activity in the control without the phospholipids. When the amylose was complexed with phospholipids the activity of the -amylase of Bacillus subtilis was reduced to about 25% of the control value. A similar effect was observed for the amylases of Zea mays leaves. The phosphorylase effected almost no phosphorolysis of the complexed amylose, but starch synthesis from glucose-1-phosphate proceeded at a rate that was about 60% of that with pure amylose. The activity of the synthetase from bundle sheath cells of maize leaves was not influenced much by the presence of phospholipids, whereas the branching enzyme of maize endosperm did not produce any amylopectin from the complexed amylose. —These facts could explain the simultaneous deposition of amylose and amylopectin in the starch granules. Some of the newly formed glucan chains may be protected by formation of a complex with the phospholipids. This protected amylose can not undergo branching or breakdown, but it can be elongated owing to the activity of synthetase or phosphorylase. Amylopectin is formed from the chains that are not complexed.

Zusammenfassung Langfristige Begasung von Erbsenkeimlingen mit SO₂ verursacht typische Veränderungen der Konzentration freier Glutaminsäure und freien Glutamins. Gleichzeitig werden die Aktivitäten der Glutamatdehydrogenase und der Glutaminsynthetase in charakteristischer Weise beeinflußt. Die Glutaminsäurekonzentration steigt nur an, wenn kurzfristig mit niedrigen SO₂-Konzentrationen (bis 0,3 ppm) begast wird. Dagegen ist immer ein Anstieg der Glutaminkonzentration zu beobachten, unabhängig von der Konzentration des Schadgases. Ähnlich verhält sich die Glutamatdehydrogenase, deren Aktivität (reduktive Aminierung) generell ansteigt. Werden die Wurzeln begaster Keimlinge unter Verwendung derselben Kriterien analysiert, ergeben sich Befunde, die denen im Sproß analog sind. Die Ergebnisse sprechen dafür, daß Stoffwechselwege intensiviert werden, die sich von der Glutaminsäure herleiten. Darauf deutet der Konzentrationsanstieg des Glutamins sowie ein vermehrtes Auftreten der -Aminobuttersäure hin.

Influence of SO₂ on the amino acid metabolism of pea seedlings

Summary Long-termed fumigation of pea seedlings with SO₂ caused typical alterations of the concentration of free glutamate and glutamine as well as fluctuations of the activity of glutamate dehydrogenase and glutamine synthetase. Shortly after the beginning of the fumigation with low concentrations of SO₂ (up to 0,3 ppm) the amount of glutamate increased. The concentration of glutamine however increases always independently of the concentration of SO₂. The activity of glutamate dehydrogenase (reductive amination of -ketoglutarate) generally increased. In roots of fumigated seedlings the effects of SO₂ on the concentration of both glutamate and glutamine as well as on the activity of GDH are quite similar to those observed in shoots. Metabolic sequences derived from glutamate seem to be activated by SO₂ as can be seen by the increase of the concentration of glutamine and -aminobutyric acid.

Zusammenfassung In Blütenblättern, deren Epidermis durch den Besitz von Chromoplasten karotingelb gefärbt ist, fehlen den Schließzellen der Stomata die Chromoplasten, die Stomatazellen sind daher nicht gelb gefärbt.     

Kalziumoxalatkristalle fehlen den Schließzellen

Zusammenfassung Die Schließzellen der Stomata enthalten auch dann keine Kalziumoxalatkristalle, wenn die übrigen Epidermiszellen solche Kristalle regelmäßig aufweisen. Als Beispiel für diese Regel wird die Oberhaut von Blatt und Stengel vonVanilla planifolia angeführt. Es wird erörtert, wodurch das Fehlen der Kalziumoxalatkristalle in den Schließzellen bedingt sein könnte.     

Über den Einfluß von Kinetin auf den Coffeingehalt der Blätter von Coffea arabica L.

Summary Kinetin induces an increase in the caffeine content of Coffea leaves of up to 40% of the normal level. The effect is most pronounced in young leaves; it is, however, transient. After six days in old leaves and after 12 days in young leaves, the caffeine content has decreased to its normal level.The results are discussed in relation to the recently discovered fact that cytokinins kinins are constituents of rare nucleotides of seryl-t-RNA. It seems plausible that the methylations necessary in the synthesis of caffeine are linked with this primary function of cytokinins.
