Two specimens of Hymenochaetaceae were collected from Guangxi, southern China, during a recent field trip in August 2011. They are described and illustrated here as two new species, Fomitiporia pentaphylacis and F. tenuitubus, based on a combination of morphological and phylogenetic (ITS and nLSU sequences) data. The two species share subglobose to globose, hyaline and thick-walled basidiospores with strongly cyanophilous in cotton blue and dextrinoid reaction in Melzer??s reagent. These characters are typical for Fomitiporia, differing from other genera in Hymenochaetaceae. F. pentaphylacis resembles F. pusilla in field by its minute basidiocarps, but F. pusilla has distinctly multiple tube layers and smaller basidiospores. F. tenuitubus is similar to F. erecta in both macro- and micro-morphological features, except its larger basidiocarps, smaller pores, and slightly shorter basidiospores. In the phylogenetic perspective, the two species nested within the Fomitiporia clade, but were separated from other sampled species as well as from each other.  相似文献

The post-settlement phase of broadcast-spawned coral life histories is poorly known due to its almost complete undetectability and, hence, presumed low abundance in the field. We used lab-cultured settled polyps of two important Caribbean reef-building species with negligible larval recruitment to quantify early post-settlement survivorship (6–9 weeks) over multiple years/cohorts and differing orientation on a reef in the Florida Keys. Orbicella faveolata showed significantly and consistently better survivorship in vertical rather than horizontal orientation, but no discernable growth overall. Meanwhile, Acropora palmata showed no significant difference in survivorship between orientations, but significantly greater growth in the horizontal orientation. Both species showed significant variation in mean survivorship between cohorts of different years; 0–47 % for O. faveolata and 12–49 % for A. palmata over the observed duration. These results demonstrate wide variation in success of cohorts and important differences in the larval recruitment capacities of these two important but imperiled reef-building species.  相似文献

Rubus canduliger is described as a new regional bramble species belonging to the seriesDiscolores. It has been recognized in the Netherlands as a distinct species for more than 70 years but identified as the central EuropeanR. grabowskii. The latter, however, differs by its tapering prickles, regular leaves with longer petiolule of the terminal leaflet, broader, often pyramidal inflorescence, and white or pink flowers with carpels hairy at the top.R. canduliger has a well-defined range north of the Rhine river around Arnhem where it occurs in urban and other disturbed habitats. Historical events, e.g. transport of young trees in the 16th century may explain most records south of the Rhine river, 25–50 km outside the main range. The ecology and phytosociology of the new bramble are discussed. Its distribution is compared toR. trichanthus, another regional species with a similar range asR. canduliger, but occurring in more natural habitats. In pseudogamous European blackberries (Rubus sectionRubus =R. fruticosus agg.), range size is considered to be related to the age of the species. Several widespread species have disjunct distribution ranges that are suggested to be the result of long-distance dispersal by migratory birds but unintentional anthropogenic transport of seeds may be involved as well. We hypothesize that in northwestern Europe fragmentation of continuous ranges of widespread species was caused by ongoing deforestation and subsequent degradation (acidification) of originally base-rich sandy and loamy soils from the Iron Age onward. Many regional species, however, have originated and spread in the resulting man-made landscapes. A classification of range types of brambles differing in size and internal structure is presented.  相似文献

Ramalina panizzei De Not. is reported from Switzerland and north of the Alps for the first time. Recent collections and thalli found amongst specimens ofR. fastigiata(Pers.) Ach. are described; the species is obviously not restricted to the Mediterranean. The confusion in several herbaria around this and related corticolous species, particularlyR. subgeniculataNyl. andR. fastigiata, can be traced back to imprecise original and subsequent diagnoses, all of which lack a clear species delimitation. Similarities and differences of these species are discussed. In addition, sequences from the rDNA ITS regions were determined for two individuals ofR. panizzeiand two ofR. fastigiata, including one of each from a site where both species grow intermixed. Kimura 2-parameter genetic-distance estimates indicate thatR. panizzeiandR. fastigiataare as different from each other as either is from the reference speciesR. siliquosa(Hudson) A. L. Sm.s.l.A broad-based taxonomic revision of involved species is not possible due to the limited number of analyses, but the results demonstrate the potential for using DNA sequence data to investigate species-level questions in lichens. Based on morphology, chemistry, and DNA sequence data,R. panizzeiis retained as a distinct species.  相似文献

Mounting evidence has shown strong linkage of root function with root branch order. However, it is not known whether this linkage is consistent in different species. Here, root anatomic traits of the first five branch order were examined in five species differing in plant phylogeny and growth form in tropical and subtropical forests of south China. In Paramichelia baillonii, one tree species in Magnoliaceae, the intact cortex as well as mycorrhizal colonization existed even in the fifth-order root suggesting the preservation of absorption function in the higher-order roots. In contrast, dramatic decreases of cortex thickness and mycorrhizal colonization were observed from lower- to higher-order roots in three other tree species, Cunninghamia lanceolata, Acacia auriculiformis and Gordonia axillaries, which indicate the loss of absorption function. In a fern, Dicranopteris dichotoma, there were several cortex layers with prominently thickened cell wall and no mycorrhizal colonization in the third- and fourth-order roots, also demonstrating the loss of absorptive function in higher-order roots. Cluster analysis using these anatomic traits showed a different classification of root branch order in P. baillonii from other four species. As for the conduit diameter-density relationship in higher-order roots, the mechanism underpinning this relationship in P. baillonii was different from that in other species. In lower-order roots, different patterns of coefficient of variance for conduit diameter and density provided further evidence for the two types of linkage of root function with root branch order. These linkages corresponding to two types of ephemeral root modules have important implication in the prediction of terrestrial carbon cycling, although we caution that this study was pseudo-replicated. Future studies by sampling more species can test the generality of these two types of linkage.  相似文献

Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary is the most important fungal pathogen of the potato (Solanum tuberosum). The introduction of major genes for resistance from the wild species S. demissum into potato cultivars is the earliest example of breeding for resistance using wild germplasm in this crop. Eleven resistance alleles (R genes) are known, differing in the recognition of corresponding avirulence alleles of the fungus. The number of R loci, their positions on the genetic map and the allelic relationships between different R variants are not known, except that the R1 locus has been mapped to potato chromosome V The objective of this work was the further genetic analysis of different R alleles in potato. Tetraploid potato cultivars carrying R alleles were reduced to the diploid level by inducing haploid parthenogenetic development of 2n female gametes. Of the 157 isolated primary dihaploids, 7 set seeds and carried the resistance alleles R1, R3 and R10 either individually or in combinations. Independent segregation of the dominant R1 and R3 alleles was demonstrated in two F1 populations of crosses among a dihaploid clone carrying R1 plus R3 and susceptible pollinators. Distorted segregation in favour of susceptibility was found for the R3 allele in 15 of 18 F1 populations analysed, whereas the RI allele segregated with a 1:1 ratio as expected in five F1 populations. The mode of inheritance of the R10 allele could not be deduced as only very few F1 hybrids bearing R10 were obtained. Linkage analysis in two F1 populations between R1, R3 and RFLP markers of known position on the potato RFLP maps confirmed the position of the R1 locus on chromosome V and localized the second locus, R3, to a distal position on chromdsome XI.  相似文献

The cuticle of the cephalobaenid pentastomid Reighardia sternae is described at various stages of the moult-intermoult cycle. The intermoult cuticle comprises four layers: an outer epicuticle; an underlying dense layer, the protein epicuticle; a fibrillar endocuticle; and a denser subcuticle. The overall similarity between the structure and composition of these layers and those of insects is discussed. However, the orientation of the chitin-protein fibres in the endocuticle does not show the rotating structure characteristic of many arthropod species, but this does appear in the sclerotized hooks. It is suggested that this comparatively loose, poorly oriented endocuticular structure produces a highly extensible cuticle which is precisely adapted to the specialized, endoparasitic habit of this species. Events at ecdysis, particularly the secretion of moulting fluid and the deposition of cuticulin, follow the insect pattern precisely. The phyletic significance of these observations is discussed.  相似文献

The allozyme polymorphism at 28 loci was examined in four Indonesian species of Rattus (R. diardii, R. tiomanicus, R. argentiventer and R. exulans) and in two French species (R. rattus and R. norvegicus). R. diardii was the most polymorphic species (H = 0.089) and R. tiomanicus and R. exulans the least polymorphic (H = 0.026). The six species were found to differ from one another by 2–7 diagnostic loci. The use of allozyme characters for systematic identification is discussed. Genetic relationships between the six species were established using two different methods. In both cases, the results were different from those published earlier. These results are discussed in view of the representatives of the loci investigated.  相似文献

The majority of centrohelids bear external coverings consisting of organic spicules or siliceous scales. Cyst coverings are usually reinforced with additional layers of modified scales. The cyst wall of Raphidiophrys heterophryoidea has an unusual and complex structure. It consists of three different types of scales and includes the mosaic scale layer not known in other centrohelids. During excystment, the cyst wall fragments along the sutures of the mosaic layer. For other Raphidiophrys species, cyst coverings are not studied. The present paper describes a new Raphidiophrys species, R. elongata, belonging to the NC7 environmental clade. Trophozoites bore thin plate scales with reduced upper plate. Under starvation, cysts emerged in clonal cultures. Cyst coverings of R. elongata and R. heterophryoidea were studied in comparison with the use of FIB-SEM. Cyst wall of R. elongata was significantly thinner than in R. heterophryoidea and was formed with 3–5 layers of uniform overlapping scales. No mosaic scale layer was present. During excystment, trophozoite exited cyst shell through random fissure. Possible evolutionary events and driving forces behind the complication of cyst wall within Raphidiophrys were discussed.  相似文献

The cell-wall structure and plasma-membrane particle arrangement during cell wall formation of the filamentous chlorophycean alga Spirogyra sp. was investigated with the freeze-fracture technique. The cell wall consists of a thick outer slime layer and a multilayered inner wall with ribbon-like microfibrils. This inner wall shows three differing orientations of microfibrils: random orientation on its outside, followed by axial bundles of parallel microfibrils, and several internal layers of bands of mostly five to six parallel associated microfibrils with transverse to oblique orientation. The extraplasmatic fracture face of the plasma membrane shows microfibril imprints, relatively few particles, and “terminal complexes” arranged in a hexagonal package at the end of the imprint of a microfibril band. The plasmatic fracture face of the plasma membrane is rich in particles. In places, it reveals hexagonal arrays of “rosettes”. These rosettes are best demonstrable with the double-replica technique. These findings on rosette arrays of the zygnematacean alga Spirogyra are compared in detail with the published data on the desmidiacean algae Micrasterias and Closterium.  相似文献

Genetic diversity is essential for species to sustain their populations and evolutionary potential. In order to develop effective conservation strategies for rare species, it is necessary to understand differences in patterns of genetic diversity between common and rare species. Data about population genetic structure is important to design effective conservation strategies for rare species. In this study, we compared the genetic diversity and population genetic structure of a common species, Rhododendron weyrichii, to those of two rare species, Rhododendron sanctum and Rhododendron amagianum, with different geographic distributions. We analyzed five microsatellite loci in 16 populations of R. weyrichii, 9 populations of R. sanctum, and 6 populations of R. amagianum. As expected, the level of genetic diversity indicated by allelic richness and gene diversity was lower for the rare species R. sanctum than for the common species R. weyrichii. However, there was no statistically significant difference in genetic diversity between R. weyrichii and the other rare species, R. amagianum. Analyses of the isolation-by-distance pattern, neighbor-joining trees, and Bayesian clustering indicated that R. sanctum had a strong population genetic structure whereas R. amagianum exhibited very weak genetic structure among populations and that there was moderate population genetic structure for R. weyrichii. Therefore, the degree and pattern of population genetic structure in each species was unrelated to its rarity and instead merely reflected its geographic distribution.  相似文献

Foliar cuticle of a new species of Ruflorinia, R. orlandoi Carrizo et Del Fueyo, from the Lower Cretaceous Springhill Formation in Santa Cruz province, Argentina, is herein described with light and electronic (scanning and transmission) microscopy. The fronds of R. orlandoi nov. sp. are bipinnate and imparipinnate with a conspicuous main rachis bearing alternate to sub-opposite pinnae. Cuticular striations and hairs are present in both epidermises whereas stomata are only on the abaxial cuticle. Stomata have several papillate subsidiary cells and the guard cells are sunken. Ultrastructurally the adaxial and abaxial cuticles are composed of three and two cuticular layers, respectively. The cuticular characters here described are interpreted as a response to a possible adaptation to a wet climate as well as to the fluctuating environment produced by the gradual transition from fluvial to an estuarine and marine setting that characterizes the Springhill Formation. The discovery of this new species allows expanding the previous knowledge of the paleofloristic composition of the Springhill Formation with the addition of the first pteridospermous megafossil described for this formation. Moreover, the record of Ruflorinia orlandoi nov. sp. in the Springhill Formation highlights the importance of the Caytoniales during the Cretaceous in Patagonia.  相似文献

Functional morphology and biomechanical properties of hook structures functioning as attachment devices in the leaning climbers Rosa arvensis, Rosa arvensis ‘Splendens‘, Asparagus falcatus and Asparagus setaceus are analysed in order to investigate the variability in closely related species as well as convergent developments of hook structure and properties in distant systematic lineages (monocots and dicots). Prickles and spines were characterised by their size, orientation and the maximum force measured at failure in mechanical tests performed with traction forces applied at different angles. In Rosa arvensis and Rosa arvensis ‘Splendens‘ three types of prickles differing largely in geometrical and mechanical properties are identified (prickles of the wild species and two types of prickles in the cultivar). In prickles of Rosa arvensis no particular orientation of the prickle tip is found whereas in the cultivar Rosa arvensis ‘Splendens‘ prickles gradually gain a downward-orientation due to differential growth in the first weeks of their development. Differences in mechanical properties and modes of failure are correlated to geometrical parameters. In Asparagus falcatus and Asparagus setaceus spines are composed of leaf tissue, stem tissue and tissue of the axillary bud. Between species spines differ in size, orientation, distribution along the stem, tissue contributions and mechanical properties. The prickles of Rosa arvensis and its cultivar and the spines of the studied Asparagus species have several traits in common: (1) a gradual change of cell size and cell wall thickness, with larger cells in the centre and smaller thick-walled cells at the periphery of the hooks, (2) occurrence of a diversity of shape and geometry within one individual, (3) failure of single hooks when submitted to moderate mechanical stresses (Fmax/basal area < 35 N/mm²) and (4) failure of the hooks without severe stem damage (at least in the tested wild species).  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism is a common trait in many mammal species and sexual-size dimorphism (SSD) represents its commonest form. Rattus rattus and Rattus norvegicus are two cosmopolitan, polygynous species, for which a male-biased SSD has been anecdotally reported, but never quantified. In this work, we assessed the occurrence of SSD in both species and we tested the hypothesis that R. norvegicus has a more evident SSD than R. rattus, in agreement with their body mass-testes size ratio, intra-male aggressive behaviour and mating system. We collected weight data of 40 (20 males and 20 females) adult R. rattus and 27 (13 males and 14 females) adult R. norvegicus from 4 localities in Italy characterized by different habitat typologies. We used a t-test based on Bayesian inference to compare the SSD in both species. The results were in line with our expectation supporting a higher SSD in R. norvegicus than in R. rattus. This study aimed to identify the eco-evolutionary drivers of SSD, and provides further support to well established life history theories on two widely distributed rodent species.  相似文献

Rhynchocyon udzungwensis is a recently described and poorly understood sengi (giant elephant-shrew) endemic to two small montane forests in Southern Tanzania, and surrounded in lower forests by R. cirnei reichardi. In this study, we investigate the molecular genetic relationship between R. udzungwensis and R. c. reichardi, and the possible role that shifting species distributions in response to climate fluctuations may have played in shaping their evolutionary history. Rhynchocyon udzungwensis and R. c. reichardi individuals were sampled from five localities for genetic analyses. Three mitochondrial and two nuclear loci were used to construct species trees for delimitation and to determine whether introgression was detectable either from ancient or ongoing hybridization. All species-tree results show R. udzungwensis and R. c. reichardi as distinct lineages, though mtDNA shows evidence of introgression in some populations. Nuclear loci of each species were monophyletic, implying introgression is exclusively historical. Because we found evidence of introgression, we used distribution data and species distribution modelling for present, glacial, and interglacial climate cycles to predict how shifting species distributions may have facilitated hybridization in some populations. Though interpretations are affected by the limited range of these species, a likely scenario is that the mtDNA introgression found in eastern mid-elevation populations was facilitated by low numbers of R. udzungwensis that expanded into lowland heavily occupied R. c. reichardi areas during interglacial climate cycles. These results imply that relationships within the genus Rhynchocyon may be confounded by porous species boundaries and introgression, even if species are not currently sympatric.  相似文献

Biological traits and colony structure are difficult to analyze in subterranean termites owing to their cryptic lifestyle and their often elusive breeding system. However, the use of molecular markers in a population genetics framework allows the investigation of such aspects. We present here the colony genetic structures of 12 samples collected along the Italian peninsula of two Reticulitermes species (the native R. lucifugus and the introduced R. urbis) analyzed through nuclear microsatellite markers. Reproductive strategies and colony breeding systems differ between the two species. Secondary reproductives of R. lucifugus, collected in three colonies, are all females; genotyping comparisons between these females and their nest mate workers clearly indicate the presence of asexual queen succession (AQS) events in this species, as observed in the Japanese R. speratus and in the North-American R. virginicus. Two other R. lucifugus colonies have a mixed family genetic pattern, possibly as the result of colony fusion events: accordingly, relatedness estimates indicate the presence of genetically unrelated workers. On the contrary, all R. urbis colonies have a genetic structure compatible with the presence of multiple secondary reproductives, as expected on the basis of previous analyses. Moreover, neotenics’ sex ratio is balanced and their heterozygosity is comparable to that of nest mate workers, suggesting that AQS is lacking in this taxon. The differences observed in such biological traits between the two species are discussed in the light of their invasive potential.  相似文献

Rat-bite fever is an over-looked, global zoonotic disease that has a mortality rate of up to 13%, if untreated. Historically, this rat-borne disease has been attributed to one of two causative agents, Streptobacillus moniliformis or Spirillum minus. Given the confirmed presence of multiple invasive Rattus host species, high rat densities in urban, informal human settlements and increasing reports of rat bites in South Africa, we undertook a retrospective assessment of Streptobacillus in rats sampled from 16 urban sites, in Gauteng, the smallest but most populous Province in South Africa. Using a multi-gene PCR-sequencing approach, we confirmed Streptobacillus presence in 50.9% of oral swabs from three rat species and the presence of two Streptobacillus species, viz. S. moniliformis and S. notomytis. The two members of the cryptic Rattus rattus species complex (R. rattus and R. tanezumi), which are morphologically indistinguishable from each other, had markedly different colonization rates. Whereas 48.6% of rats from this species complex were Streptobacillus-positive, only 32.3% of Rattus tanezumi were positive compared to 61.5% R. rattus. Rattus norvegicus had an intermediate prevalence of 55.6%. Phylogenetic analysis of four gene regions (16S rRNA, gyrB, groEL, recA) identified two discrete lineages; S. moniliformis occurred exclusively in R. norvegicus, and S. notomytis was restricted to the two members of the R. rattus species complex; this represents the first report of Streptobacillus in R. tanezumi. These results highlight a largely overlooked zoonotic threat posed by invasive rats and confirm the presence of two discrete and potentially host-specific Streptobacillus lineages in South Africa.  相似文献

Gene flow between hybridizing plant species depends strongly on pollinator behaviour, which affects pollen transfer among floral types and reproductive isolation. We examined bumblebee behaviour and pollen transfer between two hybridizing Rhinanthus species that are very similar in ecology and floral traits. The two species, Rhinanthus minor and R. angustifolius, shared similar pollinator guilds and assemblages, but pollinator recruitment and flower visitation rates were higher in R. angustifolius sites, probably because of its higher reward levels and better visibility. When presented with Rhinanthus flowers, bumblebees that previously foraged on R. angustifolius were less prone to visit R. minor inflorescences, while R. minor foragers accepted both species in similar proportions. Although Rhinanthus has been cited as a case of mechanical isolation resulting from interactions between bee behaviour and differences in stigma and anther placement, we found no support for efficient mechanical reproductive isolation. Bumblebees that foraged on R. minor flowers carried more pollen, but pollen placement on their bodies was similar to that of bees that visited R. angustifolius, and cross-specific stigmatic pollen deposition was similar in both directions. However, the asymmetry in pollinator handling time between the two species, due to dissimilar pollen rewards, may have lowered relative heterospecific pollen receipt on R. angustifolius, suggesting that net gene flow resulting from pollen transfer dynamics is more likely towards R. minor, although this effect remains weak and will be most likely counterbalanced by context-based labile pollinator preference.  相似文献

The vestibular system of the inner ear detects the motions of the head and is involved in maintaining balance. For this reason, this organ has been deeply studied and several scientists have tried to link its morphology with the locomotor behavior of an animal. Via high-resolution computed microtomography and geometric morphometric methods, we analyzed the intraspecific variation of the 3D morphology of the bony labyrinth (inner ear) in four species of primates differing in their locomotor adaptations: two being slow-moving taxa (Nycticebus and Perodicticus), and two being fast-moving taxa (Callithrix and Microcebus). Basically, there are very few analyses of the inter-individual variation of this organ in mammals in general, and this approach has never been attempted in primates thus far. Our results show that variation of the bony labyrinth morphology is expressed by the same ways in the different species (e.g., differences in the size, shape, and orientation of the semicircular canals, and in the width and height of the cochlea), but that slow-moving taxa exhibit a higher amount of intraspecific variation than do fast-moving taxa. Our results strengthen support for a previously published hypothesis, according to which a relaxation of the selective pressure applied to the morphology of the bony labyrinth is the likely reason for this higher amount of intraspecific variation in slow-moving taxa, and that it may be related to a reduced functional demand for rapid postural adjustments.  相似文献

Rapisma McLachlan, 1866 (Neuroptera: Ithonidae) is a rarely encountered genus of lacewings found inmontane tropical or subtropical forests in Oriental Asia. In Xizang Autonomous Region (Tibet) of China there are two sympatrically distributed species of Rapisma, i.e. Rapisma xizangense Yang, 1993 and Rapisma zayuanum Yang, 1993, in which R. xizangense is only known as male and has dull brownish body and wing coloration, while R. zayuanum is only known as female and has bright green body and wing coloration. In order to clarify the relationship between these two species, we determined the complete mitochondrial (mt) genomes of R. xizangense and R. zayuanum for the first time. The mt genomes are 15,961 and 15,984 bp in size, respectively, and comprised 37 genes (13 protein coding genes, 22 tRNA genes and 2 rRNA genes). A major noncoding (control) region was 1,167 bp in R. xizangense and 1,193 bp in R. zayuanum with structural organizations simpler than that reported in other Neuropterida species, notably lacking conserved blocks or long tandem repeats. Besides similar mitogenomic structure, the genetic distance between R. xizangense and R. zayuanum based on two rRNAs and 13 protein coding genes (PCGs) as well as the genetic distance between each of these two Tibetan Rapisma species and a Thai Rapisma species (R. cryptunum) based on partial rrnL show that R. xizangense and R. zayuanum are most likely conspecific. Thus, R. zayuanum syn. nov. is herein treated as a junior synonym of R. xizangense. The present finding represents a rare example of distinct sexual dimorphism in lacewings. This comparative mitogenomic analysis sheds new light on the identification of rare species with sexual dimorphism and the biology of Neuroptera.  相似文献
