We carried out DNA-hybridization comparisons among representatives of the major groups of Chiroptera to determine the phylogenetic position of the New Zealand short-tailed bat, Mystacina tuberculata. All analyses confirmed the noctilionoid affinity of this species suggested by an earlier serological study, with support from taxon jackknifing and at bootstrap levels of 98% or higher. However, a specific association with Noctilio was not found in more than 13% of the bootstrapped trees. The most precise of the thermal-stability indices employed (T m, the median melting temperature of hybridized sequences) demonstrated a sister-group relationship of Mystacina to all noctilionoids, with Noctilio the first branch within Noctilionoidea but separated from the Mystacina lineage by a very short internode. Our determination of the timing of the divergence of Mystacina from noctilionoids is 54 myrbp. This estimate is based on independent indications that extant bat lineages began to diversify in the latest Cretaceous and is much earlier than the tentative estimate of 35 myrbp inferred from serology. Even if the diversification of all living bats occurred as early as 83 myrbp, as some authors have suggested, separation of Mystacinidae—on that basis, at 66 myrbp—could not have taken place soon enough for this taxon to be isolated on New Zealand before New Zealand separated from the rest of Gondwanaland. However, any of these dates would allow for the distribution of the noctilionoid–mystacinid common ancestor in South America, Australia, and Antarctica before the final sundering of Australia from Antarctica and for the divergence of Mystacinidae as a possible result of that event. This hypothesis is supported by the presence of fossil mystacinids in early and mid-Miocene deposits at Bullock Creek and Riversleigh, Queensland, showing that Mystacinidae had been resident in Australia from at least 25–20 myrbp. The most obvious scenario explaining the presence of Mystacinidae in New Zealand is therefore fortuitous dispersal from Australia across the Tasman Sea.  相似文献

Spiracle and tracheal structure in the extant Ixodida is revised and shown to comprise 29 distinct component characters, some of which are common to all Anactinotrichida, while others are unique to the Ixodida or one of its six component clades of ((Argasidae Nuttalliellidae) (Prostriata Metastriata)). Structural variation both between and within families is based upon combinations of minor differences in the component characters, only one of which, spiracular position, proved to be incongruent within the most parsimonious cluster- and tree-analysis solutions. Tracheal airflow in ticks is mediated via passive diffusion gradients. In the argasid spiracle, both aeropyles and ostium are functional, although the latter is only opened briefly during infrequent periods of activity. The ixodid ostium is sealed and all gas exchange takes place via an enlarged sieveplate which reduces transpiration via small aeropyles, an underlying dense array of pedicels and possibly hygroscopic sub-atrial glands. Changes in spiracular morphology from a more ‘ancestral’ argasid type to a more ‘derived’ ixodid type are correlated with changes in tick behaviour, particularly with increased activity associated with the change from nidicoly to host-seeking.  相似文献

The green lineage (Viridiplantae) comprises the green algae and their descendants the land plants, and is one of the major groups of oxygenic photosynthetic eukaryotes. Current hypotheses posit the early divergence of two discrete clades from an ancestral green flagellate. One clade, the Chlorophyta, comprises the early diverging prasinophytes, which gave rise to the core chlorophytes. The other clade, the Streptophyta, includes the charophyte green algae from which the land plants evolved. Multi-marker and genome scale phylogenetic studies have greatly improved our understanding of broad-scale relationships of the green lineage, yet many questions persist, including the branching orders of the prasinophyte lineages, the relationships among core chlorophyte clades (Chlorodendrophyceae, Ulvophyceae, Trebouxiophyceae and Chlorophyceae), and the relationships among the streptophytes. Current phylogenetic hypotheses provide an evolutionary framework for molecular evolutionary studies and comparative genomics. This review summarizes our current understanding of organelle genome evolution in the green algae, genomic insights into the ecology of oceanic picoplanktonic prasinophytes, molecular mechanisms underlying the evolution of complexity in volvocine green algae, and the evolution of genetic codes and the translational apparatus in green seaweeds. Finally, we discuss molecular evolution in the streptophyte lineage, emphasizing the genetic facilitation of land plant origins.  相似文献

Phylogeny, evolution, and taxonomy of vannellid amoebae   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We sequenced 18S rRNA genes from 21 vannellid amoebae (Amoebozoa; Vannellidae), including nearly all available type cultures, and performed a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis for 57 Vannellidae sequences. The results show that species of Vannella and Platyamoeba are completely mixed and do not form distinct clades. Several very closely related species pairs exist, each with a Vannella and a Platyamoeba species differing in only a few nucleotides. Therefore, presence (Vannella) or absence (Platyamoeba) of glycostyles in the cell surface coat is an invalid generic distinction; the genera must be merged. As Vannella has priority, we formally transferred Platyamoeba species into Vannella, except for the non-vannellid P. stenopodia, here renamed Stenamoeba stenopodia gen. n. comb. n. and transferred to the family Thecamoebidae. Our trees show that Vannella glycostyles were probably easily and repeatedly evolutionarily lost. We have established a new genus Ripella, with distinct morphology and sequence signatures for Vannella platypodia and morphologically similar species that form a clearly separate clade, very distant from other Vannellidae. Vannellids form four well-separated single-genus clades: Vannella sensu stricto, Ripella, Clydonella, and Lingulamoeba. Species of the revised genus Vannella comprise four closely related, well-supported subclades: one marine and three freshwater. Here, we provide an illustrated checklist for all 40 known Vannellidae species.  相似文献

An adequate stratigraphic record can not only aid in both cladistic and stratophenetic reconstruction of phytogenies, but can also serve in estimating the temporal consistency of the resulting phylogenetic trees. For hypothetical data sets, cladistically constructed trees can be as consistent with the temporal distribution of sampled populations or species as those constructed stratophenetically. Empirical testing in taxonomic groups with sufficiently dense fossil records is needed to show whether, and under what conditions, this potential can be realized. A stratophenetic tree and cladistic trees based on several approaches to character weighting were constructed for Caribbean Neogene species of the bryozoan Metrarabdotos with multiple‐character data from closely spaced sequential populations. The modular morphology and highly punctuated evolutionary pattern of these species blur the distinction between continuous and discrete characters, so that all available characters are potentially of equal significance in establishing phytogenies, rather than just those with discrete states conventionally used in cladistic analysis. However, only the cladistic trees generated with all characters weighted to emphasize contribution to species discrimination have temporal consistencies that are clearly significant statistically and approach that of the stratophenetic tree in magnitude. These results provide a start toward establishing general guidelines for cladistic analysis of taxa with stratigraphie records too sparse for stratophenetic reconstruction.  相似文献

A Family Level Analysis of Tardigrade Phylogeny   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
In the present study a character data set suitable for cladistic analysis at the family level was developed. A data matrix consisting of 50 morphological characters from 15 families of tardigrades was analyzed by maximum parsimony. Kinorhynchs, loriciferans, and gastrotrichs were used as outgroups. The results agree with the currently accepted hypothesis that Eutardigrada and Heterotardigrada are distinct monophyletic groups. Among the eutardigrades, Eohypsibiidae was found to be a sister group to Macrobiotidae+Hypsibiidae, while Milnesiidae was the basal eutardigrade family. The basal heterotardigrade family was found to be Oreellidae. Echiniscoideans grouped with some traditional Arthrotardigrada (Renaudarctidae, Coronarctidae+Batillipedidae) suggesting that the arthrotardigrades are not monophyletic. The 18S rRNA gene sequence of Batillipes mirus Richters, 1909 and Calohypsibius schusteri Nelson & McGlothlin, 1996 were obtained and their addition to a previously published dataset supports the monophyly of Heterotardigrada and of Parachela versus Apochela within the Eutardigrada.  相似文献

Despite major advances in the study of molecular and morphological evolution a substantial rift still exists between these two fields of endeavour. Phenotypic alteration through evolution results from a reallocation of resources which has as its origin the interplay between the production capability of the genes on the one side and the acquisitional need of the phenotype on the other. This process of allocation is coordinated through the environmental arena and is subject to mechanical, biological and economical constraints. Differences in the rates of morphological change at any level (molecular, cellular, organismal or population) depend on the level of environmental challenge, on the availability of variability and on the economics of supply and demand. Short run changes in response to severe environmental stress will be sudden and energetically expensive and will rely on stress-induced unmasking of genetic variability and loss of canalization. Long run changes will be gradual, energetically less costly and less dependent on genetic correlations.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Information relating to the ultrastructure of 4 organellar systems of flagellates—nuclei (including mitosis), flagella, mitochondria and chloroplasts—is examined for bearing on the probable phylogeny of the principal flagellate groups, first considered singly and then in combination. The mitotic mechanism has not proved to be as conservative a character as might be hoped, but still remains characteristic for the average condition in many of the groups. Flagellar features are useful if allowance is made for the reduction or multiplication of the basic pair, and the loss of lateral and terminal hairs seems to have occurred independently several times. The presence of paraxial rods within flagella may be a useful indication of affinity. Rootlet systems are not dealt with in detail here, although the possible similarity between axial microtubular sheets in axostylar flagellates and some members of the green algae containing “manchettes” is noted. The basic patterns of chloroplast internal structure are summarized and their general agreement with other characters is affirmed, noting however that cryptomonads may be closer to the green flagellates (including euglenoids) than is generally accepted. Attention is drawn to the potential value of internal mitochondrial morphology as an indicator of large assemblages. Finally, a “tree” based on multiple cell organizational features is presented and discussed.  相似文献

In this article, literature records of argasid and ixodid ticks feeding on humans worldwide are provided in view of increased awareness of risks associated with tick bites. Ticks can cause paralyses, toxicoses, allergic reactions and are vectors of a broad range of viral, rickettsial, bacterial and protozoan pathogens. Approximately 12 argasid species (Argas and Ornithodos) are frequently found attached to humans who intrude into tick-infested caves and burrows. Over 20 ixodid tick species are often found on humans exposed to infested vegetation: four of these are Amblyomma species, 7 Dermacentor spp., 3 Haemaphysalis spp., 2 Hyalomma spp. and 6 Ixodes species. Personal protection methods, such as repellents and acaricide-impregnated clothing are advised to minimize contact with infected ticks. Acaricidal control of ixodid ticks is impractical because of their wide distribution in forested areas, but houses infested with soft ticks can be sprayed with acaricidal formulations. Attached ticks should be removed without delay. The best way is to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible with fine tweezers and pull firmly and steadily without twisting. Finally, despite the fact that most people who are bitten destroy the offending tick in disgust, it is recommended that they preserve specimens in ethanol for taxonomic identification and detection of pathogens by molecular methods.  相似文献

The historical zoogeography of eusuchian crocodilians has rarelybeen reviewed in any detail and yet is of increasing interestto students of crocodilian biology as large amounts of comparativeinformation on a wide range of species come to hand. Previousinterpretations of crocodilian zoogeography have been basedon one or another of two assumptions–that the major continentalland masses have remained more or less fixed in position, andthat the eusuchians have had only very limited powers of dispersalacross marine barriers. Both of these assumptions are inappropriatein light of our present knowledge of continental drift and crocodilianphysiology. In this paper we attempt a reinterpretation of eusuchian zoogeographybased on new information on their systematic relationships,physiological capacity for marine dispersal, and fossil history.We postulate that anatomical and physiological adaptations toa marine existence have played an important role in eusuchianhistory. We propose that Gavialis and Tomistoma, now restrictedto fresh waters, may have been derived secondarily from ancestorsadapted to salt water. In the case of Tomistoma, similaritiesin lingual gland and buccal cavity anatomy to the true crocodiles(Crocodylus and Osteolaemus) suggest that marine adaptationspredated the divergence of tomistomine and crocodyline stocks.The buccal morphology of Gavialis suggests it also has a marineancestry. Its systematic affinities are uncertain, lying perhapswith Tomistoma or, on other interpretations, with the Mesosuchia.In both cases, the fossil record is not inconsistent with thispossibility. Palaeontological information now available is inadequate toreconstruct the evolutionary history of the Eusuchia in detail.However, saltwater adapted eusuchians are more common in thefossil record than is widely recognized and the likelihood ofdispersal across marine "barriers" by non-alligatorid crocodilianscannot be ignored.  相似文献

The cerato-platanin family consists of proteins that can induce immune responses, cause necrosis, change chemotaxis and locomotion and may be related to the growth and development of various fungi. In this work, we analyzed the phylogenetic relationships among genes encoding members of the cerato-platanin family and computed the divergence times of the genes and corresponding fungi. The results showed that cerato-platanin-encoding genes could be classified into 10 groups but did not cluster according to fungal classes or their functions. The genes transferred horizontally and showed duplication. Molecular dating and adaptive evolution analyses indicated that the cerato-platanin gene originated with the appearance of saprophytes and that the gene was under positive selection. This finding suggests that cerato-platanin-encoding genes evolved with the development of fungal parasitic characteristics.  相似文献

Ticks are obligate blood‐sucking ectoparasites, which not only directly damage through bites but also transmit many pathogens. China has a high diversity of tick species, 125 species have been reported, including 111 hard tick and 14 soft tick species. Many of the ticks are important vectors of pathogens, resulting in zoonoses. The dynamics of ticks are affected by both the host and habitat environment. However, systematic studies on the geographical distribution, host diversity, and specificity of ticks are limited in China. To achieve this goal, the relevant available data were summarized and analyzed in this study. Ticks are distributed in all parts of China and Xinjiang has the most records of ticks. The distribution of ticks in adjacent areas is similar, indicating that the habitat environment affects their distribution. Most ticks are widely distributed, whereas some species are endemic to their distributed regions. Ticks are parasitic on mammals, birds, and reptiles, of which mammals are the main host species. Overall, most ticks parasitize different hosts, only a few ticks have strict host specificity, such as ticks that are specifically parasitic on reptiles and bats. In addition, environmental changes and control efforts also influence the dynamics of ticks. These results can better reveal tick biological traits and are valuable for tick control.  相似文献
