In 1983 and 1984, potato seed tubers of five early and seven maincrop cultivars were inoculated with cultures of Rhizoctonia soluni during planting to simulate severe seed infection. Shoot and stolon infection was assessed in June-August and black scurf on tubers recorded after harvest in October. Almost all shoots of all cultivars had stem canker in both years and disease on shoots, stolons and tubers was more severe in 1984 than in 1983. In 1983 similar amounts of disease developed on all early cultivars and between 11% (Ulster Sceptre) and 32% (Maris Peer) shoots were pruned off. Maris Peer had a stem canker score lower than other cultivars in 1984 but more than half the shoots were pruned off. Shoot pruning on Estima, Ulster Prince and Ulster Sceptre was more common on plants from sprouted than non-sprouted seed. Between 30 and 50% of stolons were pruned off. After harvest in 1985, black scurf was least prevalent on Arran Comet and Maris Peer tubers and in 1984 on Arran Comet and Estima tubers from non-sprouted seed. Of the maincrop cultivars, King Edward plants from sprouted seed had many shoots pruned off in both years. Shoot pruning was also prevalent on Maris Piper and Pentland Squire plants from non-sprouted seed. Record had fewest pruned shoots and stolons and the lowest stem canker score. The disease was more severe on Pentland Crown and Maris Piper plants from non-sprouted than sprouted seed. Black scurf was most common on Cara and King Edward tubers in 1983 and on King Edward and Record tubers in 1984. In both years few shoots but many tubers were infected on plants from non-inoculated seed and the significance of this is discussed. 相似文献

In two years, potato plants were sampled at 1- or 2- weekly intervals from plots planted with seed tubers bearing sclerotia of Rhizoctonia solani (black scurf) and with seed without sclerotia either infested or not with cultures of R. solani at planting. Sprouted King Edward seed was used in 1981 and sprouted and non-sprouted King Edward and Pentland Crown seed in 1982. In both years 60–80% of shoots from seed with sclerotia and 90% of shoots from seed inoculated at planting were affected with stem canker. Most disease developed before shoots emerged although it gradually increased later when new shoots arising both from seed tubers or as branches on shoots with damaged apices (pruned shoots) became infected before they emerged. Sprouting seed tubers bearing sclerotia decreased the disease on both cultivars but with soil-applied inoculum the disease was more severe on plants from sprouted than non-sprouted seed. Some stolons were infected by R. solani soon after they developed and incidence of infection later increased. Thirty to 50% of stolons were infected on plants from infected seed tubers and 60% on plants with soil-applied inoculum. With both cultivars and sources of inoculum about 70% of the infected stolons had their apices killed (pruned). 相似文献

Large seed tubers (mean 134 g) and small seed tubers (50 g) of three early and three maincrop potato cultivars, spaced respectively 48 and 30 cm apart within rows, were inoculated with Rhizoctonia solani at planting in 1985 and 1986. All seed of early cultivars was sprouted and maincrop seed was either sprouted or not sprouted. In all cultivars, plant emergence was slower from small than large seed and with both was delayed by inoculation. From 11 wk after planting numbers of stems and tubers and weights of foliage and tubers/m2 were usually similar from small and large seed when not inoculated, but inoculating delayed plant growth and decreased tuber numbers and yield more from small than large seed. Inoculating decreased mean yields from large and small seed of early cultivars at 11 wk by respectively 24% and 31% (Arran Comet), 12% and 18% (Estima) and by 10% and 28% (Wilja) and losses were greatest with saleable sized tubers (3–4 cm). When grown to maturity inoculating decreased yields by 7% (Arran Comet), 5% (Estima) and 14% (Wilja). With maincrop cultivars, yields in October from large and small seed were decreased by respectively 4% and 10% (DCsirke), 9% and 12% (Maris Piper) and by 14% and 22% (Pentland Squire). In all cultivars yields of tubers < 44 mm and 44–70 mm were decreased and, with Pentland Squire, tubers > 82 mm were increased. The incidence of stem canker and of black scurf on progeny tubers was not affected by seed size but in all cultivars the percentage of greened tubers was slightly increased by inoculation. 相似文献

The effects of potato cyst nematodes (Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida) on the growth of early and later maturing potato cultivars, with or without the H, resistance gene, were compared in pot experiments and the effects of introducing Verticillium dahliae into the system were studied. The influence of the nematodes on root function and structural integrity was inferred from their effects on calcium and water uptake. Early maturing cultivars were less tolerant of nematode attack than later maturing ones, and those with the H1 resistance gene were more tolerant of G. rostochiensis than G. pallida. When V. dahliae was introduced, Verticillium wilt symptoms appeared much earlier on the early than the maincrop cultivars. Also, Maris Anchor (first early) died before Maris Peer (second early) and death of both when infected by nematodes and fungus was much earlier than uninfected control plants or plants infected with G. rostochiensis only. Maris Peer infected by both organisms snowed symptoms much more severe than when infected by either organism alone, whereas Maris Anchor was almost as severely affected by V. dahliae alone as both organisms together. Pentland Javelin (first early) developed Verticillium wilt symptoms several weeks later than other cultivars and the addition of nematodes failed to increase the severity of the symptoms. These differences in cultivar susceptibility to the combination of nematodes and fungus may be due to the nematodes causing different degrees of trauma in the roots of the three cultivars: measuring calcium uptake per unit water uptake showed that nematodes dramatically increase calcium uptake but that the proportional change is least in Pentland Javelin. If this is a reflection of less damage by nematodes to the endodermis of this cultivar, it may explain the greater resistance of its roots to penetration by V. dahliae. 相似文献

Potato seed tubers of seven cultivars derived from stem cuttings in 1965 (healthier seed) were grown in 1969–72 at two sites, one clay with flints soil (Rothamsted) and the other sandy loam soil (Woburn). Inoculating sprouted tubers at planting with Polyscytalum pustulans did not affect the number of stems/plant or total yield but increased stem base and tuber infection. The yields of large tubers (57–83 cm) were increased and small tubers (>57 cm) decreased, indicating a decrease in tuber numbers. Rhizoctonia solani inoculated at planting decreased numbers of stems/plant and yield by up to 14% at Woburn but not at Rothamsted. At both sites, yields of large tubers were increased with cvs Majestic and Record and decreased with Pentland Crown. Stem canker and tuber infection were increased but infection was also prevalent on tubers from non-inoculated seed at Woburn. When both pathogens were inoculated together yields of large tubers were increased in cvs King Edward, Majestic and Record and decreased in Pentland Crown. Infection of stem bases and tubers was sometimes less than when either pathogen was inoculated singly. 相似文献

A disease complex involving Meloidogyne incognita and Rhizoctonia solani was associated with stunting of grapevines in a field nursery. Nematode reproduction was occurring on both susceptible and resistant cultivars, and pot experiments were conducted to determine the virulence of this M. incognita population, and of M. javanica and M. hapla populations, to V. vinifera cv. Colombard (susceptible) and to V. champinii cv. Ramsey (regarded locally as highly resistant). The virulence of R. solani isolates obtained from roots of diseased grapevines also was determined both alone and in combination with M. incognita. Ramsey was susceptible to M. incognita (reproduction ratio 9.8 to 18.4 in a shadehouse and heated glasshouse, respectively) but was resistant to M. javanica and M. hapla. Colombard was susceptible to M. incognita (reproduction ratio 24.3 and 41.3, respectively) and M. javanica. Shoot growth was suppressed (by 35%) by M. incognita and, to a lesser extent, by M. hapla. Colombard roots were more severely galled than Ramsey roots by all three species, and nematode reproduction was higher on Colombard. Isolates of R. solani assigned to putative anastomosis groups 2-1 and 4, and an unidentified isolate, colonized and induced rotting of grapevine roots. Ramsey was more susceptible to root rotting than Colombard. Shoot growth was inhibited by up to 15% by several AG 4 isolates and by 20% by the AG 2-1 isolate. AG 4 isolates varied in their virulence. Root rotting was higher when grapevines were inoculated with both M. incognita and R. solani and was highest when nematode inoculation preceded the fungus. Shoot weights were lower when vines were inoculated with the nematode 13 days before the fungus compared with inoculation with both the nematode and the fungus on the same day. It was concluded that both the M. incognita population and some R. solani isolates were virulent against both Colombard and Ramsey, and that measures to prevent spread in nursery stock were therefore important. 相似文献

Potato plants growing in soil heavily infested with potato cyst nematode (PCN) contained less N, P and K in their leaf dry matter than plants growing in the same soil treated with a nematicide. These differences were less in tolerant than intolerant cultivars. Applying additonal fertiliser increased the growth of untreated plants more than that of nematicide-treated plants and nematicides increased growth most in plots receiving the lowest rate of fertiliser. Overall, the results are consistent with the hypothesis that damage by invading juveniles of PCN decreases the effectiveness of the potato root system leading to a chronic deficiency of one or more nutrients and a consequential reduction in the rate of top growth. 相似文献

The effects of different seed sizes, planting densities and planting patterns on the transmission of silver scurf (Helminthosporium solani) and black scurf (Rhizoctonia solani) diseases of potatoes were examined in five field experiments with cv. Estima in 1991–93.
In all experiments, silver scurf was more severe with increase in seed size and planting density. At high planting density, silver scurf was less severe from a square planting pattern than from planting in wide rows. Responses of Rhizoctonia solani to herbicides in soil cultures were assessed by measuring soil enzyme activity and other growth-related factors. Both beta-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.23) and phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.1.3.1.3.2) activities were highly correlated with amounts of mycelium in soil. Both enzyme activities were reduced significantly by either fluometuron or prometryn at 40 microgram/g of soil; the pathogen was more distinctly suppressed by fluometron and showed a stronger tendency to overcome the effects of prometryn with time. Inhibition was also reflected in reduced ultilization of glucose and less CO2-C evolved. Except for an increase in beta-galactosidase activity in the presence of 1 microgram fluometuron, low levels of either herbicide had little effect on the pathogen. 相似文献

Field experiments were carried out in 1991 and 1992 on sandy soil highly infested with the potato cyst nematode Globodera pallida. Half the trial area was fumigated with nematicide to establish two levels of nematode density. Three levels of soil compaction were made by different combinations of artificial compaction and rotary cultivation. Two potato cultivars were used in 1991 and four in 1992. Both high nematode density and soil compaction caused severe yield losses, of all cultivars except cv. Elles which was tolerant of nematode attack. The effects of the two stress factors were generally additive. Analysis of the yield loss showed that nematodes mainly reduced cumulative interception of light while compaction mainly reduced the efficiency with which intercepted light was used to produce biomass. This indicates that nematodes and compaction affect growth via different damage mechanisms. Nematodes reduced light interception by accelerating leaf senescence, by decreasing the specific leaf area and indirectly by reducing overall crop growth rate. Partitioning of biomass between leaves, stems and tubers was not affected by nematode infestation but compaction decreased partitioning to leaves early in the growing season while increasing it during later growth stages. The effects of nematodes and compaction on root length dynamics and nutrient uptake were also additive. This suggests that the commonly observed variation in yield loss caused by nematodes on different soil types is not related to differences in root system expansion between soils of various strength. Cv. Elles, which showed tolerance of nematodes by relatively low yield losses in both experiments, was characterised by high root length density and thick roots. These characteristics did not confer tolerance of soil compaction, since compaction affected root lengths and tuber yields equally in all cultivars. In the first experiment only, high nematode density led to decreased root lengths and lower plant nutrient concentrations. Several types of interaction between Rhizoctonia solani, Fusariumsolani, and Phoma foveata were found when these fungi were grownon potato-dextrose agar. After being used by Rhizoctonia a potatomash medium gave better growth of Rizoctonia and Fusarium thanit did when the medium was initially used by Fusarium; and thiswas so whether the reaction of the spent medium was readjustedor not. It is suggested that potato mash medium used by Fusariumcontains a thermostable factor(s) affecting the subsequent growthof Rhizoctonia or Fusarium. The range of pH values suitable for Rhizoctonia growth was narrowerthan that for Fusarium, optimum values being approximately 59for the former and 78 for the latter. In mixed culturesof the two fungi on potato-dextrose agar adjusted to differentpH values, the fungus for which the reaction of the medium wasmore suitable usually became visually predominant after sometime. A study of various carbon sources showed that poor growth ofRhizoctonia was obtained when pectin was used as the sole sourceof carbon. On a pectin-agar medium, the rate of growth of aRhizoctonia colony increased on the sector which lay towardsan adjacent Fusarium colony; also, after the two fungi camein contact, there was more rapid growth of Rhizoctonia roundthe Fusarium colony than elsewhere. On a synthetic liquid mediumwith pectin as the carbon source better Rhizoctonia growth wasobtained when Fusarium-spent medium was added to it than whenRMzoctoma-spent medium was added. Rhizoctonia showed partial deficiencies in thiamine, biotin,and inositol. Bacteriol. 91:169-175. 1966.-The rate of respiration of Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium bataticola decreased with age. This decrease in respiratory rate might be produced by a decrease in the specific activity of one or more enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Specific activities in cell-free extracts were measured for most of the enzymes in the hexose monophosphate shunt, Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathway, tricarboxylic acid cycle, and terminal electron-transport system. In addition, glucose oxidase, isocitritase, and malic enzyme were measured. In R. solani, increases in activity with age occurred for hexokinase, alpha-glycerolphosphate dehydrogenase, malic dehydrogenase, and cytochrome oxidase. Decreases occurred for phosphohexokinase, aconitase, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-specific isocitric dehydrogenase, reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide oxidase, and at least one of the enzymes between 3-phosphoglycerate and pyruvate. In S. bataticola, increases in activity with age were observed for phosphohexokinase, pyruvic dehydrogenase, fumarase, malic dehydrogenase, and malic enzyme, whereas none of the enzymes decreased. Three experiments, conducted in 1988, 1989 and 1990, examined the effects of date of removal of a clear, perforated (200 X 10 mm holes m-2 ), plastic film cover on the growth and early yield of potato crops. Results confirmed that the highest early yields were achieved when the cover was removed 2 wk after 50% crop emergence and the resulting yield increase over a non-covered control varied from 6–14 t ha-1 . Later removal reduced the benefit from covering and in some cases eliminated any advantage. Covering increased mean soil and air temperatures 2.9°C and 3.2°C respectively (mean of three experiments), thereadvancing crop emergence between 3 and 5 days. The number of day-degrem accumulated between planting and emergence was very similar in covered and non-covered treatments within a season but varied between seasons from 190°C to 293°C day (> 0°C). Delaying removal resulted in an increased physical restriction to canopy expansion and reduced the capacity of the crop to intercept solar radiation. Total dry-matter yield was determined largely the amount of radiation intercepted crops (R2 = 0.98). Plastic covering had relatively little effect on partitioning of dry matter to tubers but reduced tuber dry-matter percentage at early harvests when removal occurred later than 3 wk after crop emergence. 相似文献

In field experiments in 1981 and 1982, uninoculated seed tubers (cv. Désirée) and those inoculated with Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica at the rose (apical) or heel (stolon attachment) ends were planted at normal (35 cm) or double spacing; in additional plots, inoculated and uninoculated tubers were planted alternately. Inoculation, especially at the rose end, decreased plant height and sometimes resulted in blackleg symptoms. Individual plant yields were recorded at the end of the season. In plots of uniform seed type at normal spacing, inoculation decreased total yield compared with uninoculated by 12–13% (heel-end inoculation) or 26–40% (rose-end inoculation). At double spacing, yields increased compared with normal spacing by 44–58% (uninoculated or heel-end inoculation) or 30–39% (rose-end inoculation). When rose-end-inoculated and uninoculated seed tubers were planted alternately, inoculated plants yielded less and uninoculated plants more than in plots planted throughout with the same seed treatment. The abilities of inoculated and uninoculated plants to compensate for weak or missing neighbours were combined using equations to predict the yields of crops with different proportions of diseased or missing plants. 相似文献

Impact of initial density of cowpea aphid Aphis craccivora Koch (Aphididae) at infestation on the growth and yield of aphid-susceptible cowpea cultivar ICV-1 and aphid-resistant cultivar ICV-12, was investigated. Plants at the seedling, flowering and podding stages of development were infested with five aphid densities consisting of 0, 2, 5, 10 and. 20 aphids per plant and maintained for 22 days. Extended leaf heights of plants and aphid counts were recorded at 7, 12, 17 and 22 days after infestation. Two crop growth parameters (biomass duration and leaf area duration), and two plant yield parameters (number of pods per plant and number of seeds per pod) were recorded. Due to the occurrence of parthenogenesis and changes in population dynamics during infestations, aphid densities were converted into cumulative cowpea aphid-days, to facilitate data analyses and interpretation. ANOVA indicated that there was significant (P=s 0.05) difference in aphid-day accumulations between the two cultivars when infested at the seedling stage. Accumulations on cv. ICV-1 were greater than on cv. ICV-12. However, no such differences between the cultivars were detected when plants were infested at flowering and podding stages. Therefore, the seedling stage was used for comparisons of the impact of cowpea aphid-days on the growth and yield parameters of the two cultivars. At the 95% confidence intervals, ICV-12 plants were consistently taller than ICV-1 plants. Infested ICV-1 seedlings showed stunting and other growth deformities which were not observed on ICV-12 plants. Regression analyses revealed substantial reductions in the growth and yield parameters of ICV-1 relative to ICV-12. Overall, cowpea aphid-days provided a convenient and reliable method for studying the aphid population dynamics and the subsequent impact on plant growth and yield performance. 相似文献

Benomyl and benodanil, applied to tobacco seedlings before transplanting, reduced sore shin infection. Benodanil was the more effective, sometimes restricting damage to 5% of the surface area of the buried portion of stems, compared with 50–60% in untreated plants. The fungicides were applied either as a seedbed drench or a root-stem dip. The dip method used less fungicide and was generally more effective than the drench at equal concentration but was less practical.
