The question of whether any specific plant species are typically growing along railway tracks (the so-called “railway-wandering plants”) has been discussed for many years. This study proves the existence of a form of Geranium robertianum species growing along railway tracks in North–Eastern Poland. Floristic studies have been carried out in 246 areas along railway tracks. This particular species was found in 70 studied areas (28 %). Comparative studies were carried out on 12 plant populations growing in the fieldwork and in glasshouse cultivation. Plants growing along the railway tracks in Wali?y were different from all other studied populations. They were small (smaller by 31 %, max. by 57 % than other plants), with little leaf blades representing different shapes and colour. In studies of light absorption by photosynthetic apparatus (chlorophyll fluorescence) under conditions of exposure to high light intensity, the plants from Wali?y were proved to have a better adaptation capacity to stress conditions. Increased levels of anthocyanins—which provided better protection of the photosynthetic apparatus against insolation—were shown. The protective properties against water deficiencies and excessive insolation were genetically preserved and were found in the second generation of plants cultivated in a glasshouse. For the first time, a new plant form of G. robertianum—a “railway-wandering plant” adapted to the conditions prevailing along railway tracks—was confirmed to exist. The results of the investigations of radioactive contamination after the Chernobyl catastrophe and subsequent iodine prophylaxis on the thyroid gland function and morphology in Northeast Poland. The aim of the study was to determine whether kalium iodine in one dose during radioactive contamination in Poland limited the radioactive dose in the thyroid gland and if significant disadvantageous side-effects in the intrathyroid and extrathyroid occurred. Additionally during the studies we tried to determine if radioactive iodine contamination which occurred in the region of the Medical Academy in Bia?ystok caused an increase in thyroid disease. It is interesting to note the different results obtained after radioactive contamination with the results from the investigations in this same territory in 1983-1985. In 1983-1985, before the Chernobyl catastrophe, 6,921 persons in Northeast Poland were investigated. In 1986-1988, immediately after the disaster 4,010 persons were investigated. The main study according to grant No MZ-XVII was carried out in three provinces: Bia?ystok, Suwa?ki and Olsztyn. In this investigation 10,011 persons born before April 26, 1986 and after January 1, 1936 participated, 5,789 townspeople and 4,222 villagers, 3,987 children up to 16 years of age it the time of the disaster 1,973 boys and 2,009 girls; 6,024 adults 2,509 men and 3,516 women were drawn from a register. Committed doses to the thyroid in the investigated region were one of the highest in Poland and depended on age group and were depended on time of prophylaxis non proportional. Iodine prophylaxis was provided mainly with one dose of Lugol solution about 90%, 95% children and 30% adults took iodine. The majority of the population (53.3%-74%) were given iodine in April. From May 1st to 5th 23.0-43.4% received iodine, but after May 5th very few persons. Iodine was well tolerated, but Lugol Solution was better tolerated than other kinds of iodine. Only 241 (4.4%) cases had side effects, mainly vomiting (143), symptoms such as stomach ache, diarrhea, dyspnoe, skinrash etc. in lesser numbers. 12% (29 persons) were seen by a physician. In the investigated population were 200 pregnant women aged 19-40 years of which the majority (177) delivered full term healthy babies. Only 1 interrupted pregnancy and 7 had spontaneous abortion. Changes in the thyroid were noticed by 187 persons (2.3%-11.7%) most of which were enlargement of the thyroid, but only a few were confirmed by a physician. During years 1988-1991 at Regional Sanitary and Epidemiological Stations in Bia?ystok, Kielce, Lublin, Leszno, Piotrków Trybunalski, Lód?, Poznań, Plock, Opole, Sanok, Skierniewice and Zielona Góra--serological studies in persons amenable to compulsory check-up against brucellosis were performed for detection of infections with C. burnetii. In whole, 20651 persons were investigated on the Polish territory and it was found that in 22.8% antibodies against antigens of C. burnetii are present. Percentage of persons with detected antibodies varied in different regions from 0 to 41.7%. No antibodies were found in persons inhabiting regions of Kielce, Piotrków Trybunalski and Skierniewice. Most persons with antibodies indicating contact with C. burnetii were found in West Poland, namely in the Leszno and Poznań region. As in diagnosis of Q fever two methods (OWD and OMA) or OWD only were applied, it is difficult to compare results obtained in regions using two or only one method of determination.  相似文献

Epidemiological foundation included: aim of studies, knowledge about epidemiology of thyroid disorders in Poland, evaluation of radioiodine dose accumulated in thyroids of inhabitants of different age living in different par of Poland, information about relative diet iodine deficiency in different parts of Poland and identification of research teams (manpower) capable to carry on population studies. The final identification of epidemiological foundation was proceeded by pilot studies performed in 4 different regions of Poland. Finally it was decided that population studies would be performed in so called Regions of 6 different University Medical Schools (Bia?ystok, Kraków, Lód?, Poznań, Szczecin, Wroc?aw). The sample will be selected randomly on the base of information from the voting lists (random selection of vovoidoship, then towns and villages, then streets and number of houses, then number of flats. All living in selected flat or house during Czernobyl accident and born between January 1974 and December 1985 (children) and between January 1926 and December 1973 (adults) will be considered "the sample". In all cases the sample will be examined by means of unified questionnaire and protocol of medical and laboratory examination. The same kits (of the same producers) will be used to evaluate serum TSH, T4, T3 and thyroid autoantibodies. The data obtained will be evaluated by unified computerized system. Separate studies involved the sample of newborns exposed to radioiodine during last trimester of pregnancy, found to be euthyroid and given potassium iodide in first days of life. Separate system was also used to investigate effect of radioiodine and of prophylactic dose of potassium iodide in those with past history of thyroid disorders.  相似文献

Several studies employing various techniques have demonstrated the occurrence of neuroendocrine cells in colorectal cancers. Chromogranin A (CGA), neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and synaptophysin (SYN) are general markers of neuroendocrine cells. The aims of the present study were to evaluate the possible correlations between CGA and/or NSE and/or SYN expression in colorectal cancer and some of its clinico-pathological features. The study was conducted on 48 patients with colorectal cancer treated with surgery only at the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Medical Academy and District Oncology Center, Bia?ystok. There were no statistically significant relationships between colorectal cancer CGA and/or NSE and/or SYN expression and tumor site, histopathological type, grading, lymph node metastases, age and sex of patients. However, high ratio of lymph node metastases in colorectal cancers with neuroendocrine cells suggests their more agressive clinical course.  相似文献

Summary

The Polish botanical literature of the Renaissance, comprising herbals and catalogues of plants published in Polish and in Latin, is hardly known outside Poland. Publication of these works was connected with the rise of science at the University of Cracow (Kraków) founded in 1364. Between 1534 and 1613, three herbals came from the Cracow presses: O Zio?ach i mocy Ich (On herbs and their power) by Stefan Falimirz (1st edition, 1534), Herbarz Polski (The Polish Herbal) by Marcin of Urzedów (1595) and Zielnik (The Herbal) by Szymon Syreniusz(1613). Besides, lists of plants occurring in Poland (Schneeberger, 1557; Wigand, 1590; Joannicy, 1616) appeared. Polish botanical literature of the Renaissance comparable with contemporary works such as those of William Turner and John Gerard, included the first floristic records from Poland, ecological notes, information about herbal drugs and also on old Slavonic beliefs about plants. A modern study on the botanical contents of the Renaissance literature should now be undertaken, embracing determination of the plants described by the herbalist, and analysis of the beginnings of scientific botany in Poland. Interdisciplinary studies on the herbals from the point of view of the history of pharmacy, ethnology, linguistics and history of culture are also needed.  相似文献

One of the major challenges in population biology is the identification of barriers to gene flow and/or secondary contacts between differentiated entities. The level of genetic differentiation among eight populations of the common voleMicrotus arvalis (Pallas, 1779) around the Biebrza Wetlands, NE Poland was examined by analyzing seven microsatellite loci for 140 voles and testing for the presence of barriers to gene flow. Overall population differentiation was moderate and significant (F ST = 0.081,p < 0.001) and there was no correlation between geographical and genetic distances among populations. We found a relatively high level of genetic variability within the populations studied. This could be explained by male bias in dispersal, a phenomenon recently found inM. arvalis. Patterns of genetic structure visualized in synthetic genetic maps showed clear gradients along a southeast-northwest axis across the study area, as well as the presence of a potential barrier to dispersal. The position of a barrier to gene flow identified using Monmonier’s maximum difference algorithm likely corresponds to humid habitats of the Biebrza Wetlands. These results suggest that the presence of environmental barriers to gene flow and drift may be responsible for the observed spatial genetic structure ofM. arvalis in the Biebrza Valley. As a process affecting animal communities, urbanization has been the subject of numerous studies. However, amphibians are still among the least studied vertebrate groups in urbanized landscapes. Generally, it has been found that the process of loss of amphibian diversity is nonrandom, with species from older evolutionary lines at greater risk. Regional data on amphibian assemblages in urban areas is a very useful tool for assessing how these assemblages react to changes.The aim of the present paper is to assess the diversity of amphibians in Polish cities based on data in the relevant literature, exploring different metrics (e.g., taxonomic, functional, and evolutionary diversity) calculated in amphibian species assemblages. We used data from 18 articles (including grey literature), characterized by comparable research methods and published between 1999 and 2017.Overall, amphibian species richness (ASR) amounted to an average of 9 species, ranging from 5 to 11 species per city. The higher species richness occurred in Białystok in North-west of Poland. Functional evenness (FEve), evolutionary distinctiveness (ED sum), and functional richness (FRic) were strongly positively correlated with ASR. However, ED mean was not significantly correlated with the total number of species in the community. Three taxa, the hybridogenetic water frogs Pelophylax esculentus complex, the common toad Bufo bufo, and the common frog Rana temporaria, occurred in all analyzed amphibian assemblages. Our study is one of the first attempts to compare urban amphibian assemblages, using different and complementary diversity metrics on a large spatial scale. In conclusion, we highlight that urban areas play an important role for conservation of amphibians, because they support amphibian assemblages characterized by a high level of overall diversity.  相似文献

Summary.  Taurine (Tau), a dominant free amino acid present in neutrophil cytoplasm, serves as a scavenger for hypochlorous acid (HOCl) released during these cells activation. The resulting taurine chloramine (Tau-Cl) exerts potent anti-inflammatory properties. In the present study we tested the hypothesis that the formation of Tau-Cl is impaired in neutrophils isolated from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. The inhibition of zymosan-triggered chemiluminescence in the presence of exogenous Tau was used for indirect measurement of Tau-Cl generation. The chemiluminescence of neutrophils isolated from peripheral blood (PB) of healthy volunteers and RA patients was inhibited by Tau with similar potency. By contrast, synovial fluid (SF) neutrophils of these patients were significantly less sensitive for Tau-mediated inhibition. Therefore, our data indicate impaired generation of Tau-Cl in neutrophils isolated from SF of RA patients. Phenol and formaldehyde concentrations have been assayed in the air of 125 apartments in newly constructed houses in Bia?ystok. Xylamide and Solfotox have been used as constmetion materials preservatives in these buildings. Control group consisted of 125 apartments built traditionally. Phenol concentration in the air of the control apartments has not exceeded acceptable values whereas it has been over acceptable values in 80% of the apartments, in which above mentioned preservatives have been used. Formaldehyde concentration in the air of control apartments and 101 apartments of tested group has been within the range of acceptable values. It was much higher in 6 apartments. No apartment exposed to chemicals has been free from formaldehyde.  相似文献

A comparative study of the occurrence of culturable airborne fungi was carried out during the four seasons of the year in four social welfare homes (SWHs), one in each of the cities of Cracow (Małopolskie province) and Białystok (Podlaskie province) and the villages of Karniowice and Czerewki situated approximately 20 km from the two cities respectively. Air of randomly chosen rooms and bathrooms, corridors, ward kitchens, soiled-linen closets, dining rooms, day rooms and nurses’ stations was sampled using single-stage impactor samplers and isolated moulds and yeasts were identified by macroscopic, microscopic and biochemical characteristics. Generally the greatest numbers of fungi were observed in the autumn. Penicillium and Cladosporium were isolated from the air in all four SWHs during all seasons of the year, but a wider range of other taxa were isolated from those in Małopolskie province.  相似文献

Currently, Brzeziecki et al. 2016 (Journal of Vegetation Science 27: 460–467.) are using data from permanent study plots established in 1936 in Bia?owie?a National Park (NE Poland) to develop theoretical equilibrium tree size distributions and to then compare modelled and actual distributions with a view to assessing the population dynamics of the species involved. As part of their discussion, the authors address the question of possible consequences for the overall diversity of forest ecosystems under strict protection if long‐term trends relating to tree population densities and size structures are maintained. In the overall context of the above, the goal of the present paper is to respond to Jaroszewicz et al. (Journal of Vegetation Science 28: 218–222.) who suggest that the paper of Brzeziecki et al. (2016) is not representative for the whole Bia?owie?a National Park, and that – in this connection – strict protection should not be seen as a cause for concern. In this paper, we show that the data analysed by Brzeziecki et al. (2016) adequately characterize conditions in the wider Park. We also point out that the thorough scientific understanding of the long‐term dynamics of woodland communities under strict protection should indeed be taken into account as efforts are made to arrive at an effective conservation strategy capable of ensuring that the uniquely valuable features of the Bia?owie?a Forest are retained.  相似文献

Question: What are the main driving factors in 70 years of natural dynamics in tree recruitment in the Bia?owie?a National Park? Location: Bia?owie?a National Park, Poland, is one of the least disturbed temperate, lowland forest systems in Europe. Methods: We tested whether fluctuations in large herbivore populations, changes in climate and openness of the forest explained compositional dynamics. Tree recruitment (to size class DBH≥5 cm) was measured on permanent transects (in total, 14.9 ha) six times between 1936‐2002. These data were related to existing data on ungulate density, climatic parameters and estimates of forest openness collected during the same period. Results: Total recruitment of all tree species combined was negatively correlated with total ungulate density and red deer density. The variation in response between species was related to the preferences of herbivores; the more preferred forage species (especially Carpinus betulus) were positively and the less preferred species negatively related to herbivore density. Total tree recruitment rates were not related to climatic parameters and openness of the forest. Only Alnus glutinosa recruitment was significantly related to climatic parameters, and Ulmus glabra related to forest openness, but there were no predictable patterns in recruitment among species in relation to these factors. Conclusion: The present study indicated that changes in large herbivore density have played an important role in driving patterns in tree recruitment and species composition during the last 70 years in Bia?owie?a National Park. In contrast to other studies, increasing herbivore numbers were associated with higher recruitment of preferred and browsing‐tolerant species. Periodical crashes in ungulate numbers, whether human‐induced or caused by natural factors, may offer windows of opportunity for regeneration of a range of tree species and facilitate more diverse and dynamic forest development.  相似文献

Lower Devonian strata from the drill cores from Poland have yielded new Heterostraci material. One ventral shield of Toombsaspis (Traquairaspididae, Phialaspidinae) discovered in the Białopole IG-1 drill core, and a fragment of dorsal shield of cf. Paraliliaspis (Cyathaspididae, Anglaspidinae) with the impressions of internal structures from Ciepielów IG-1 are described and provide new information on paleogeographic disparity of these groups.  相似文献

Capsule Folivorous caterpillars constituted the majority of nestlings’ food in a primeval forest. Blue Tit broods only partially matched the caterpillar peak, and the mismatch did not affect food composition or nesting success.

Aims To describe factors influencing the timing of reproduction in Blue Tits under primeval conditions (Bia?owie?a National Park, Poland) and to check whether they schedule breeding so as to synchronize broods with a seasonal caterpillar peak.

Methods We gathered information on phenology of leaf development, seasonal availability of folivorous caterpillars (frass collection), timing of Blue Tit breeding, composition of its nestling food, and nest fate over a three-year period.

Results Caterpillars constituted c. 74% of nestling diet, but only 17–65% of broods matched the caterpillar peak in any season. Neither total nest loss, nor frequency of brood reduction depended on the level of mismatch. Caterpillar availability was probably adequate every year, regardless of the amount of mismatch, and no selective advantage of precise matching was detectable. Phenological events at all trophic levels occurred earlier in warmer springs. Egg-laying coincided with tree bud burst and appearance of caterpillars, but was not critically dependent on their timing.

Conclusion The observations are consistent with the view that Blue Tits under primeval conditions in Bia?owie?a National Park, Poland, breed as early as possible, rather than synchronizing their breeding with the caterpillar peak later in the season.  相似文献

Pathogens carried by ticks pose a threat to both human and animal health across the world. Typically associated with rural landscapes, ticks appear to adapt well to life in urban recreational areas. Although Dermacentor reticulatus is commonly found across Europe, data on the prevalence of pathogens in this tick species, in an urban environment, are very limited. PCR was used to examine 368 D. reticulatus individuals collected in the Zwierzyniecki Forest Nature Reserve in Bia?ystok, Poland. In total, 10.3% of ticks were infected, with Babesia spp. (9.2%), Anaplasma phagocytophilum (0.8%) and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (0.3%). Rickettsia spp., Bartonella spp., and Coxiella burnetii were not detected. Sequence analysis for Babesia-positive samples identified 79.4% of them as Babesia canis, 8.8% as Babesia microti, 5.9% as Babesia spp., 2.9% as Babesia venatorum, and 2.9% as Babesia vogeli. Results obtained in this study indicate that D. reticulatus ticks found within the urban premises of the study area are infected with at least three pathogens and therefore are an important factor in public health risk for tick-borne diseases.

Rodents use their whiskers to explore their environment and to make very fine discriminations in textures and sizes of objects. Exploratory “whisking” movements consist of large amplitude, rhythmic whisker protractions that occur at characteristic frequencies of 5–10?Hz. Rodents likely whisk to move their receptor surface over the object they are touching. A fundamental understanding of this important motor behavior and the sensorimotor loops that control it were the focus of the final session of the Barrels Workshop. This session began with talks from David Kleinfeld (University of California San Diego), Miguel Nicolelis (Duke University), and Jonathan Rubin (University of Pittsburgh). These talks were followed by short presentations from Steven Leiser (Drexel University), Marcin Szwed (Weitzman Institute), Ford Ebner (Vanderbilt University), Charles Pluto (Medical College of Ohio), and Elisabeth Foeller (Washington University).  相似文献

Since 1980 severe chronic balanoposthitis has been observed in free-living European bison (Bison bonasus) in the Bia?owieza Primeval Forest (Poland). Sera of 50 bison with balanoposthitis and 48 clinically healthy male and 49 female bison were investigated for antibodies against Mycoplasma bovis and M. bovigenitalium by western blot analysis. Prevalence of antibodies against M. bovigenitalium was significantly higher in bison with balanoposthitis than in unaffected male bison. Mycoplasma bovigenitalium may play a role in the pathogenesis of balanoposthitis in European bison.  相似文献

The family Auriscalpiaceae (Russulales) includes species forming pileate, stipitate-pileate, effused-reflexed, and resupinate basidiomata. The resupinate basidiomata are characteristic only for the genus Dentipratulum, described to accommodate Dentipratulum bialoviesense, found in the Bia?owie?a Primeval Forest in Poland and later reported from several locations in Eurasia. The materials assigned to this genus were revised and three distinct morphospecies were detected, including Dentipratulum bialoviesense s. str. and two new species, Dentipratulum khuranae from India and Dentipratulum crystallinum from the Kuril Islands and France. The concept of the genus Dentipratulum is emended to include characters omitted in the original diagnosis (stem-like base of spines, rudimentary subiculum) and found in the novel species (presence of naked or encrusted leptocystidia). All Dentipratulum species are illustrated with pictures of basidiomata, line drawings of micro-morphological characters, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs of basidiospores.
