Although a number of studies have measured circulating levels of some trace elements in preeclampsia (PE) and compared to healthy pregnant (HP), there is no consensus yet about the deficiency of some metals and development of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy. The aim of this study was to compare plasmatic levels of Zn, Mn, Co, Cu, Se and Sr among non-pregnant (NP), healthy pregnant (HP), gestational hypertensive (GH) and preeclamptic (PE) women and to correlate these levels with plasma soluble endoglin (sENG) and soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFLT-1), two important antiangiogenic proteins related to PE. A total of 184 women were enrolled in this study (NP = 35, GH = 51, PE = 37 and HP = 61). Trace element analyses were carried out with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICPMS). sENG and sFLT-1 plasma concentrations were measured by commercial ELISA kits. The most interesting result is that Sr is higher in PE (63%, P < 0.001) compared to HP and their levels are positively correlated with sENG in all three groups of pregnant women. Moreover, we found a negative correlation between Zn and sENG in HP (r = −0.43, P = 0.003). Regarding other elements, we found similar levels among pregnant groups. In conclusion, this study showed that Sr may has a role in physiopathology of PE.  相似文献

The coupling of the intervertebral disc (IVD) and vertebra as a biomechanical unit suggests that changes in the distribution of pressure within the IVD (intradiscal pressure, IDP) as a result of disc degeneration can influence the distribution of bone density within the vertebra, and vice versa. The goal of this study was to assess the correspondence between IDP and bone density in the adjacent vertebrae, with emphasis on how this correspondence differs between healthy and degenerated IVDs. Bone density of the endplates and subchondral bone in regions adjacent to the anterior and posterior annulus fibrosus (aAF and pAF, respectively) and nucleus pulposus (NP) was measured via quantitative computed tomography (QCT) in 61 spine segments (T7-9, T9-11, T10-12; 71 ± 14 years). IDP was measured in the aAF, NP, and pAF regions in 26 of the spine segments (68 ± 16 years) while they were tested in flexed (5°) or erect postures. Disc degeneration was assessed by multiple grading schemes. No correlation was found between bone density and IDP in either posture (p > 0.104). Regional variations in IDP and, to a greater extent bone density, were found to change with advancing degeneration: both IDP (p = 0.045) and bone density (p = 0.024) decreased in the NP region relative to the aAF region. The finding of only a modest correspondence between degeneration-associated changes in IDP and bone density may arise from complexity in how IDP relates to mechanical force transmission through the endplate and from limitations of the available IVD grading schemes in estimating the mechanical behavior of the IVD.  相似文献

Adsorption and aerobic biodegradation characteristics of four selected endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), 17β-estradiol (E2), 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), bisphenol A (BPA) and nonylphenol (NP) were investigated in soil–water system. The sorption of EDCs onto the soil was in the following order: NP > E2 > EE2 > BPA. Sorption isotherms of the four compounds fitted Freundlich models well. The aerobic biodegradation rates of these selected EDCs in the soil–water system could be described by pseudo-first-order kinetic equation. In a single chemical system, the half-lives of EDCs were 1.7, 5.3, 2.7 and 3.3 d for E2, EE2, NP and BPA, respectively, indicating that EE2 was not as readily biodegradable as the others. In a binary-chemical system, the half-lives of EDCs in all cominations were 1.5–2.2 times prolonged than the single chemical system. The following biotransformation pathway of estrogen was proposed: E2/EE2  E1  E3. An aerobic conversion of EE2 to E3 was also observed. The result of this research could be useful for predicting environmental fate and ecological risks of EDCs in natural environments especially when soil is their depository.  相似文献

Orexin A and B, also termed hypocretin 1 and 2, are associated with the stimulation of food intake and arousal. The biological actions of the hormones are mediated via two distinct G protein-coupled receptors, termed orexin receptor 1 (OX1R) and orexin receptor 2 (OX2R). OX1R is selective for orexin A and OX2R binds orexin A and orexin B with similar affinity. The present study analyzed mRNA and protein expressions of OX1R and OX2R in adenohypophysis (AP) and neurohypophysis (NP) of cycling pigs. The tissue samples were harvested on days 2–3, 10–12, 14–16, and 17–19 of the oestrous cycle. Using quantitative real-time PCR higher OX1R gene expression was detected in AP on days 2–3 relative to days 10–12, 14–16 and 17–19 (p < 0.05). In NP the OX1R mRNA level was elevated on days 10–12 compared to the remaining stages (p < 0.05). OX2R gene expression in AP was the lowest on days 10–12 (p < 0.05 compared to days 2–3 and 17–19) and the expression peak occurred on days 17–19 (p < 0.05 vs. the all studied stages). In NP the highest (p < 0.05) expression of OX2R mRNA was noted on days 17–19 in relation to the remaining periods. OX1R protein content in AP was greatest on days 10–12 (p < 0.05), whereas in NP it was greatest on days 2–3 and 14–16 (p < 0.05 vs. days 10–12 and 17–19). In both cases the lowest OX1R protein expression was observed during follicular phase (p < 0.05 in relation to three remaining studied stages). OX2R protein in AP was lower (p < 0.05) on days 2–3 and 14–16 compared to days 10–12 and 17–19. In NP the lowest (p < 0.05) expression of this protein was on days 17–19 and the highest on days 10–12 (p < 0.05 compared to days 2–3 and 17–19). In summary, the present findings provide the first evidence that OX1R and OX2R mRNAs and proteins occur in the pituitary of the pig and indicate the dependence of orexin receptor expression on the endocrine reproductive state.  相似文献

We analysed endemic threatened tree and reptile species of Socotra Island (Yemen), characterised by different ecological requirements and spatial distribution, in order to evaluate the usefulness of spatial ecological modelling in the estimation of species extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO). Point occurrences for the entire species range were used to model their spatial distribution by Random Forest (RF) and Generalised Linear Model (GLM). For each species the suitability area (SA) was obtained by applying the 0% omission error criterion on the probability map, and compared or integrated with EOO and AOO area obtained by topological methods such as the minimum convex polygon (MCP), α-hull and 2 km × 2 km grid.RF showed a lower prediction error than GLM. Higher accuracy was achieved for species with higher number of occurrences and narrower ecological niche. SA was always greater than AOO measured with the 2 km × 2 km grid method. SA was greater than EOO, measured by both MCP and α-hull methods, for species with localised distribution, while it was smaller for widely distributed species. EOO-α-hull area was equal or smaller than that calculated by MCP depending on the spatial distribution of species. AOO measured considering the SA within the EOO-MCP was greater than that measured using the standard 2 km × 2 km grid. Conversely, AOO calculated considering the suitable area within the EOO-α-hull showed variable results, being smaller or greater than the 2 km × 2 km grid AOO depending on the ecological niche and spatial distribution of species. According to our results, SEM does not provide an effective alternative to topological methods for the estimate of EOO and AOO. However, it may be considered a useful tool to estimate AOO within the boundaries of EOO measured by the α-hull method, because it reduces some potential sources of inconsistency and bias.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe study’s objective was to determine the impact of care directed by a specialty-trained nurse practitioner (NP) or physician assistant (PA) on use of basal-bolus insulin therapy and glycemic control in a population of noncritically ill patients with diabetes.MethodsA retrospective review of diabetes patients evaluated between July 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011 was conducted. Patients cotreated by a specialty-trained NP/PA were compared with patients who did not receive such care.ResultsIn total, 171 patients with 222 hospitalizations were cotreated by an NP/PA and 543 patients with 665 hospitalizations were not. Patients with NP/PA involvement were younger, and had more frequent hyperglycemia, and had greater corticosteroid use than patients without NP/PA involvement (P < .01 for all). Basal-bolus insulin therapy was administered to 80% of patients with NP/PA involvement and 34% of patients without it (P < .01). After adjustment for age, sex, hyperglycemia measures, and corticosteroid use, the odds of basal-bolus insulin therapy being administered were increased significantly through NP/PA care (odds ratio, 3.66; 95% confidence interval, 2.36-5.67; P < .01). After adjustment for these variables and insulin regimen, NP/PA care was significantly correlated with lower mean point-of-care glucose levels at 24 hours before discharge (P = .042).ConclusionDiabetes care assisted by an NP/PA trained in inpatient diabetes management results in greater use of recommended basal-bolus insulin therapy and is correlated with lower mean glucose levels before discharge. Adapting this model for use outside an endocrinology consult service needs to be explored so that the expertise can be brought to a broader inpatient population with diabetes. Due to industrial development, environmental contamination with metals increases which leads to higher human exposure via air, water and food. In order to evaluate the level of the present exposition, the concentrations of metals can be measured in such biological materials as human blood. In this study, we assessed the concentrations of cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb) in blood samples from male blood donors from southern Poland (Europe) born in 1994 (n = 30) and between 1947 and 1955 (n = 30). Higher levels of Pb were seen in the group of older men (4.48 vs 2.48 μg/L), whereas the Hg levels were lower (1.78 vs 4.28 μg/L). Cd concentrations did not differ between age groups (0.56 μg/L). The levels of Cd and Pb in older donors were significantly correlated (Spearman R 0.5135). We also observed a positive correlation between the number of red blood cells (RBC) and Hg concentrations in the older group (Spearman R 0.4271). Additionally, we noted numerous correlations among morphological parameters. Based on our results, we can state that metals influence the blood morphology and their concentrations in blood vary among age groups.  相似文献

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) involves non-invasive magnetic stimulation of the brain, and can be used to explore the corticomotor excitability and motor representations of skeletal muscles. However there is a lack of motor mapping studies in the lower limb and few conducted in healthy cohorts. The cortical motor representations of muscles can vary between individuals in terms of center position and area despite having a general localized region within the motor cortex. It is important to characterize the normal range for these variables in healthy cohorts to be able to evaluate changes in clinical populations. TMS was used in this cross-sectional study to assess the active motor threshold (AMT) and cortical representation area for rectus femoris in 15 healthy individuals (11 M/4F 27.3 ± 5.9 years). No differences were found between hemispheres (Left vs. Right P = 0.130) for AMT. In terms of y-axis center position no differences were found between hemispheres (Left vs. Right P = 0.539), or for the x-axis center position (Left vs. Right P = 0.076). Similarly, no differences in calculated area of the motor representation were found (Left vs. Right P = 0.699) indicating symmetry between hemispheres.  相似文献

Newborn rats have limited homeothermic capabilities and little insulation. Nevertheless, rats flourish in diverse thermal environments. We hypothesized that the environmental temperature influences the development of their hair coat insulation. Rats were housed from birth (0 d) in either a cool (17 °C), moderate (25 °C), or warm (33 °C) environment. Measures were recorded from young juveniles (22 d), old juveniles (43 d), and young adults (85 d). Cool-housed rats were found to develop greater body and coat mass and a higher coat mass to body mass ratio than warm-reared rats. These results indicate that thermal environment affects the growth of the hair coat insulation of developing rats.  相似文献

We explored the relationships between surface-soil (1–20 cm) organic carbon isotopic signatures and associated climatic factors in central-east Asia in an attempt to develop transfer functions that can be used to retrieve the paleoclimatic information stored in the thick eolian–paleosol sequences within the area. Our analysis shows that the negative correlation between the surface-soil organic δ13C values and the mean annual precipitation is robust (R2 = 0.453; n = 196; p < 0.05) and the negative correlation with the growing-season (April–September) precipitation is more significant (R2 = 0.4966; n = 196; p < 0.05). Our study further shows that the positive correlation between the surface-soil organic δ13C values and mean growing-season aridity is most significant (R2 = 0.5805; n = 196; p < 0.05). We have smoothed both the organic δ13C values and the mean growing-season aridity values using a 3-point moving-window average-filter method in an attempt to remove some of random errors and found that the positive correlation between the two is further increased (R2 =  0.7784; n =  192; p < 0.05). These robust linear relationships demonstrate their value in reconstructing paleoclimate changes in the study area. The documented climatic dependency of the surface-soil carbon isotopic composition in the study area might have resulted both from the humidity-related isotopic enrichment processes of the dominant C3 plants (stomatal conductance and photosynthetic discrimination) and from the aridity-related abundance of C4 plants (mainly Chenopodiaceae species) along the S–N bioclimatic gradient.  相似文献

A Metarhizium anisopliae spore surface lipase (MASSL) strongly bound to the fungal spore surface has been purified by ion exchange chromatography on DEAE sepharose followed by ultrafiltration and hydrophobic interaction chromatography on phenyl sepharose. Electrophoretic analyses showed that the molecular weight of this lipase is ~66 kDa and pI is 5.6. Protein sequencing revealed that identified peptides in MASSL shared identity with several lipases or lipase-related sequences. The enzyme was able to hydrolyze triolein, the animal lipid cholesteryl stearate and all ρNP ester substrates tested with some preference for esters with a short acyl chain. The values of Km and Vmax for the substrates ρNP palmitate and ρNP laurate were respectively 0.474 mM and 1.093 mMol min?1 mg?1 and 0.712 mM and 5.696 mMol min?1 mg?1. The optimum temperature of the purified lipase was 30 °C and the enzyme was most stable within the most acid pH range (pH 3–6). Triton X-100 increased and SDS reduced enzyme lipolytic activity. MASSL activity was stimulated by Ca2+, Mg2+ and Co2+ and inhibited by Mn2+. The inhibitory effect on activity exerted by EDTA and EGTA was limited, while the lipase inhibitor Ebelactone B completely inhibited MASSL activity as well as PMSF. Methanol 0.5% apparently did not affect MASSL activity while β-mercaptoethanol activated the enzyme.  相似文献

Water consumption affects milk production of dairy cows. In a previous study, we found that dairy cows preferred to drink from larger than from smaller troughs and that intake was higher when water was offered in the larger, preferred troughs. In this study, we investigated some of the trough's characteristics that may underlie such preference. The volume of water consumed, time spent drinking and number of sips taken by cows (n = 18) were compared when water was offered in two troughs differing in surface area (1.13 m2 or 0.28 m2; experiment 1), height (30 cm or 60 cm; experiment 2) or depth (30 cm or 60 cm; experiment 3). In each experiment, each cow was tested individually for six consecutive days with the troughs randomly placed in each side. In experiment 1, cows took more sips (P < 0.01), spent more time drinking (P < 0.01) and drank more water (P < 0.01) from the trough with larger surface area. In experiment 2, cows took more sips from the higher than from the lower trough (P < 0.02) and showed a tendency to consume more water (P = 0.08) and to spend more time drinking (P = 0.08) from the higher than from the lower trough. Trough depth did not influence any of the variables recorded.  相似文献

In humans the cross sectional area of spinal motor neurons at L3 is larger in males than in females. Since these contribute to the control of the quadriceps femoris muscle group and are involved in the patellar reflex (PR), gender differences in the PR are expected. We have investigated this possibility using a group of 28 young subjects (14 male and 14 female) aged 20–22 years. The PR was quantified by the muscle compound action potential (MCAP) from the surface electromyogram (sEMG) of the vastus lateralis muscle. We found that the PR latency in females (17 ± 0.19 ms), was significantly (p < 0.001) faster than in males (21 ± 0.37 ms). This 4 ms difference in latency could not be ascribed to differences in stature or thigh length. In conclusion, for the age range tested females posses a significantly faster patellar reflex than males. We suggest that the slower PR latency of male subjects may arise in part from their larger α-motorneurons: such that longer integration times are required for the summation of postsynaptic excitation to be sufficient to excite α-motorneurons.  相似文献

Little information is available to assess the dynamic changes in wetland soil quality in coastal regions, though it is essential for wetland conservation and management. Soil samples were collected in Suaeda salsa wetlands (SWs), Tamarix chinensis wetlands (TWs), Suaeda salsaTamarix chinensis wetlands (STWs), freshwater Phragmites australis wetlands (FPWs) and saltwater Phragmites australis wetlands (SPWs) in three sampling periods (i.e., summer and autumn of 2007 and spring of 2008). According to the flooding characteristics of these wetlands, the study area could be grouped into three sub-regions: short-term flooding region (STFR), seasonal flooding region (SFR) and tidal flooding region (TFR). Soil quality was evaluated using the soil quality index (SQI), which was calculated using the selected minimum data set (MDS) based on principal components analysis (PCA). Our results showed that soil salt content (SSC), total carbon (TC), magnesium (Mg), nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) and total sulfur (TS) consisted of a MDS among 13 soil properties. The SQI values varied from 0.18 to 0.66 for all soil samples, of which the highest and lowest SQI values were observed in TFR. The average SQI values were significantly higher in summer (0.50 ± 0.13) than in spring (0.37 ± 0.13) and autumn (0.36 ± 0.11) in the whole study area (p < 0.05). The average SQI values followed the order STFR (0.44 ± 0.12) > TFR (0.41 ± 0.15) > SFR (0.35 ± 0.09) although no significant differences were observed among the three regions (p > 0.05). SPWs and SWs soils showed higher SQI values (0.50 ± 0.10 and 0.47 ± 0.15, respectively) than TWs (0.30 ± 0.08) soils (p < 0.05). The SSC was the dominant factor of soil quality with its proportion of 34.1% contributing to the SQI values, followed by TC (24.5%) and Mg (24.1%). Correlation analysis also showed that SQI values were significantly negatively correlated with SSC. SSC might be a characteristic indicator of wetland soil quality assessment in coastal regions. The findings of this study showed that the SQI based on MDS is a powerful tool for wetland soil quality assessment.  相似文献

Background: Compared with visual torque-onset-detection (TOD), threshold-based TOD produces onset bias, which increases with lower torques or rates of torque development (RTD). Purpose: To compare the effects of differential TOD-bias on common contractile parameters in two torque-disparate groups. Methods: Fifteen boys and 12 men performed maximal, explosive, isometric knee-extensions. Torque and EMG were recorded for each contraction. Best contractions were selected by peak torque (MVC) and peak RTD. Visual-TOD-based torque-time traces, electromechanical delays (EMD), and times to peak RTD (tRTD) were compared with corresponding data derived from fixed 4-N m- and relative 5%MVC-thresholds. Results: The 5%MVC TOD-biases were similar for boys and men, but the corresponding 4-N m-based biases were markedly different (40.3 ± 14.1 vs. 18.4 ± 7.1 ms, respectively; p < 0.001). Boys–men EMD differences were most affected, increasing from 5.0 ms (visual) to 26.9 ms (4 N m; p < 0.01). Men’s visually-based torque kinetics tended to be faster than the boys’ (NS), but the 4-N m-based kinetics erroneously depicted the boys as being much faster to any given %MVC (p < 0.001). Conclusions: When comparing contractile properties of dissimilar groups, e.g., children vs. adults, threshold-based TOD methods can misrepresent reality and lead to erroneous conclusions. Relative-thresholds (e.g., 5% MVC) still introduce error, but group-comparisons are not confounded.  相似文献

To improve proarrhythmic predictability of preclinical models, we assessed whether human ventricular-like embryonic stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hESC-CMs) can be selected following a standardized protocol. Also, we quantified their arrhythmogenic response and compared this to a contemporary used rabbit Purkinje fiber (PF) model. Multiple transmembrane action potentials (AP) were recorded from 164 hESC-CM clusters (9 different batches), and 12 isolated PFs from New Zealand White rabbits. AP duration (APD), early afterdepolarizations (EADs), triangulation (T), and short-term variability of repolarization (STV) were determined on application of the IKr blocker E-4031 (0.03/0.1/0.3/1 μM). Isoproterenol (0.1 μM) was used to assess adrenergic response. To validate the phenotype, RNA isolated from atrial- and ventricular-like clusters (n = 8) was analyzed using low-density Taqman arrays. Based on initial experiments, slow beating rate (< 50 bpm) and long APD (> 200 ms) were used to select 31 ventricular-like clusters. E-4031 (1 μM) prolonged APD (31/31) and induced EADs only in clusters with APD90 > 300 ms (11/16). EADs were associated with increased T (1.6 ± 0.2 vs 2.0 ± 0.3?) and STV (2.7 ± 1.5 vs 6.9 ± 1.9?). Rabbit PF reacted in a similar way with regards to EADs (5/12), increased T (1.3 ± 0.1 vs 1.9 ± 0.4?), and STV (1.2 ± 0.9 vs 7.1 ± 5.6?). According to ROC values, hESC-CMs (STV 0.91) could predict EADs at least equivalent to PF (STV 0.69). Isoproterenol shortened APD and completely suppressed EADs. Gene expression analysis revealed that HCN1/2, KCNA5, and GJA5 were higher? in atrial/nodal-like cells, whereas KCNJ2 and SCN1B were higher? in ventricular-like cells (?P < 0.05). Selection of hESC-CM clusters with a ventricular-like phenotype can be standardized. The proarrhythmic results are qualitatively and quantitatively comparable between hESC-CMs and rabbit PF. Our results indicate that additional validation of this new safety pharmacology model is warranted.  相似文献

Postnatal early overfeeding (EO) is related to later development of overweight and other metabolic disorders. As oxidative stress is implicated in most human diseases, as obesity and diabetes, we decided to study some parameters related to oxidative stress and insulin signaling in liver from EO animals in adult life. To induce EO, litter size was reduced to three pups per litter (SL: small litter) and groups with normal litter size (NL:10 pups per litter) were used as control. After weaning, rats had free access to standard diet and water. Body weight and food intake were monitored daily and offspring were killed at 180 days-old. Significant differences had P<.05 or less. As expected, SL rats had hyperphagia, higher body weight and higher visceral fat mass at weaning and adulthood. In liver, postnatal EO programmed for lower catalase (? 42%), superoxide dismutase (? 45%) and glutathione peroxidase (? 65%) activities. The evaluation of liver injury in adult SL group showed lower nitrite content (? 10%), higher liver and plasma malondialdehyde content (+ 25% and 1.1-fold increase, respectively). No changes of total protein bound carbonyl or Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase protein expression in liver were detected between the groups. Regarding insulin signaling pathway in liver, SL offspring showed lower IRβ (? 66%), IRS1 (? 50%), phospho-IRS1 (? 73%), PI3-K (? 30%) and Akt1 (? 58%). Indeed, morphological analysis showed that SL rats presented focal areas of inflammatory cell infiltrate and lipid drops in their cytoplasm characterizing a microsteatosis. Thus, we evidenced that postnatal EO can program the oxidative stress in liver, maybe contributing for impairment of the insulin signaling.  相似文献

Dairy production across the world contributes to environmental impacts such as eutrophication, acidification, loss of biodiversity, and use of resources, such as land, fossil energy and water. Benchmarking the environmental performance of farms can help to reduce these environmental impacts and improve resource use efficiency. Indicators to quantify and benchmark environmental performances are generally derived from a nutrient balance (NB) or a life cycle assessment (LCA). An NB is relatively easy to quantify, whereas an LCA provides more detailed insight into the type of losses and associated environmental impacts. In this study, we explored correlations between NB and LCA indicators, in order to identify an effective set of indicators that can be used as a proxy for benchmarking the environmental performance of dairy farms. We selected 55 specialised dairy farms from western European countries and determined their environmental performance based on eight commonly used NB and LCA indicators from cradle-to-farm gate. Indicators included N surplus, P surplus, land use, fossil energy use, global warming potential (GWP), acidification potential (AP), freshwater eutrophication potential (FEP) and marine eutrophication potential (MEP) for 2010. All indicators are expressed per kg of fat-and-protein-corrected milk. Pearson and Spearman Rho’s correlation analyses were performed to determine the correlations between the indicators. Subsequently, multiple regression and canonical correlation analyses were performed to select the set of indicators to be used as a proxy. Results show that the set of selected indicator, including N surplus, P surplus, energy use and land use, is strongly correlated with the eliminated set of indicators, including FEP (r = 0.95), MEP (r = 0.91), GWP (r = 0. 83) and AP (r = 0.79). The canonical correlation between the two sets is high as well (r = 0.97). Therefore, N surplus, P surplus, energy use and land use can be used as a proxy to benchmark the environmental performance of dairy farms, also representing GWP, AP, FEP and MEP. The set of selected indicators can be monitored and collected in a time and cost-effective way, and can be interpreted easily by decision makers. The pathogenesis of sickle cell disease (HbSS), which has numerous complications including stroke, involves inflammation resulting in alteration of plasma inflammatory protein concentration. We investigated HbSS children with abnormal cerebral blood flow detected by trans-cranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) who participated in the multi-center stroke prevention (STOP) study, to determine if plasma inflammatory protein concentration is associated with the outcome of stroke. Thirty-nine plasma samples from HbSS participants with elevated TCD who had no stroke, HbSS-NS (n = 13) or had stroke, HbSS-S (n = 13), HbSS steady-state controls (n = 7) and controls with normal hemoglobin, HbAA (n = 6), were analyzed simultaneously for 27 circulating inflammatory proteins. Logistic regression and receiver operating characteristics curve analysis of stroke on plasma inflammatory mediator concentration, adjusted for age and gender, demonstrated that interleukin-1β (IL-1β) was protective against stroke development (HbSS-NS = 19, 17–23, HbSS-S = 17, 16–19 pg/mL, median and 25th–75th percentile; odds ratio = 0.59, C.I. = 0.36–0.96) and was a good predictor of stroke (area under curve = 0.852). This result demonstrates a strong association of systemic inflammation with stroke development in HbSS via moderately increased plasma IL-1β concentration, which is furthermore associated with a decreased likelihood of stroke in HbSS.  相似文献

The influence of silicon on the growth of maize plants cultivated in hydroponics in the presence of cadmium (5 μM) was investigated. Four different treatments were used: Control (C), Cadmium (Cd), Silicon (Si) and Cadmium plus Silicon (Cd + Si). The Si concentration was 35 mM. Thirteen-day-old plants were harvested. Growth parameters (length of primary seminal root, leaf area of first and second fully developed leaves, fresh and dry weight of below- and above-ground parts of the plants), and Cd concentration and total amount of Cd in the below- and above-ground parts were determined. In roots, the development of the endodermal barrier was observed by fluorescent staining with Fluorol yellow 088.Inhibitory effects of Cd on plant growth were observed. Silicon treatment in the absence of Cd had positive effects on most of observed growth parameters compared with the control. Moreover, Si in the Cd + Si treatment improved all growth parameters compared with the cadmium treatment. Silicon increased the cell-wall extensibility both in Si and Cd + Si treatments when compared with the control. Alleviation of the Cd-inhibitory effect on maize plants by Si was not due to exclusion of Cd from the plant; in contrast, Cd concentration in below- and above-ground plant parts and the total amount of Cd per plant were significantly higher in the Cd + Si plants than in the Cd treatment. The increased Cd content in Cd + Si plants was correlated with the development of the endodermis; during the second stage of endodermal development, suberin lamellae were formed at a greater distance from the root apex in the Cd + Si than in the Cd treatment. Silicon itself did not influence the development of suberin lamellae in the maize roots compared with the control.  相似文献
