The anaerobic digestion technology is a biological treatment widely used to reduce the pollution load of wet waste biomass. In this work we present the results obtained by performing extensive experiments of anaerobic digestion of slaughterhouse waste, tomato industry waste and olive oil industry waste in continuous mode, which were designed to demonstrate that anaerobic digestion is an effective technology from an environmental and economic point of view.Biogas yields obtained are between 35.22 and 5.45 Nm3 biogas/m3 olive oil industry waste and tomato industry waste respectively and the slaughterhouse wastes achieve intermediate production, 30.86 Nm3 biogas/m3 municipal slaughterhouse waste and 22.53 Nm3 biogas/m3 Iberian pig slaughterhouse waste. Moreover, it possible to degrade between 63.46 and 75.3% of the initial organic matter. If these results are analyzed, the environmental, energetic economic benefits of anaerobic digestion can be quantified. Biomethanation of all these wastes generated annually in Extremadura could prevent the emission of 134,772 t of equivalent carbon dioxide, generate an energy similar to that provided by 2826 toe and reach payback times from 3.29 to 3.75 years for anaerobic digestion plant designed to treat the wastes generated by a medium-sized industry. So, we have fulfilled all the planned aims.  相似文献

The effects of increasing nitrobenzene (NB) concentrations and hydraulic retention times (HRT) on the treatment of NB were investigated in a sequential anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR)/aerobic completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR) system. In the first step of the study, the maximum COD removal efficiencies were found as 88% and 92% at NB concentrations varying between 30 mg L?1 and 210 mg L?1 in ABR. The minimum COD removal efficiency was 79% at a NB concentration of 700 mg L?1. The removal efficiency of NB was nearly 100% for all NB concentrations in the ABR reactor. The methane gas production and the methane gas percentage remained stable (1500 mL day?1 and 48–50%, respectively) as the NB concentration was increased from 30 to 210 mg L?1. In the second step of the study it was found that as the HRT decreased from 10.38 days to 2.5 days the COD removal efficiencies decreased slightly from 94% to 92% in the ABR. For maximum COD and NB removal efficiencies the optimum HRT was found as 2.5 days in the ABR. The total COD removal efficiency was 95% in sequential anaerobic (ABR)/aerobic (CSTR) reactor system at a minimum HRT of 1 day. When the HRT was decreased from 10.38 days to 1 day, the methane percentage decreased from 42% to 29% in an ABR reactor treating 100 mg L?1 NB. Nitrobenzene was reduced to aniline under anaerobic conditions while aniline was mineralized to catechol with meta cleavage under aerobic conditions.  相似文献

Microbial communities involved in biogas production from wheat straw as the sole substrate were investigated. Anaerobic digestion was carried out within an up-flow anaerobic solid-state (UASS) reactor connected to an anaerobic filter (AF) by liquor recirculation. Two lab-scale reactor systems were operated simultaneously at 37 °C and 55 °C. The UASS reactors were fed at a fixed organic loading rate of 2.5 g L−1 d−1, based on volatile solids. Molecular genetic analyses of the bacterial and archaeal communities within the UASS reactors (digestate and effluent liquor) and the AFs (biofilm carrier and effluent liquor) were conducted under steady-state conditions. The thermophilic UASS reactor had a considerably higher biogas and methane yield in comparison to the mesophilic UASS, while the mesophilic AF was slightly more productive than the thermophilic AF. When the thermophilic and mesophilic community structures were compared, the thermophilic system was characterized by a higher Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio, as revealed by 16S rRNA gene (rrs) sequence analysis. The composition of the archaeal communities was phase-separated under thermophilic conditions, but rather stage-specific under mesophilic conditions. Family- and order-specific real-time PCR of methanogenic Archaea supported the taxonomic distribution obtained by rrs sequence analysis. The higher anaerobic digestion efficiency of the thermophilic compared to the mesophilic UASS reactor was accompanied by a high abundance of Firmicutes and Methanosarcina sp. in the thermophilic UASS biofilm.  相似文献

Crop residues can be used for biogas production in farm scale reactors. Use of a process temperature below mesophilic conditions reduces the need for heating as well as investment and operating costs, although it may also reduce the methane yield. In the present study the effect of temperature on net energy output was studied using sugar beet tops and straw as substrates for two pilot-scale reactors. Digestion was found to be stable down to 11 °C and optimal methane yield was obtained at 30 °C. The methane yield and process performance was studied at 15 °C and 30 °C as organic loading rates were increased. It was found that the highest net energy production would be achieved at 30 °C with a loading rate of 3.3 kg VS m−3 day−1. Running a low-cost process at ambient temperatures would give a net energy output of 60% of that obtained at 30 °C.  相似文献

Olive mill wastewater (OMW) is a highly polluting wastewater, caused by a high organic load and phenol content. These characteristics suggest that it may be suitable for aerobic treatment and anaerobic bacterial digestion. Aerobic treatment coupled with anaerobic bacterial digestion may be economically feasible as the methane produced is a valuable energy source while simultaneously purifying the OMW. In an attempt to improve the overall performance of the process, the addition of a co-substrate such as whey to the aerobic treatment pre-treatment of OMW by the yeast Candida tropicalis was studied. The two-stage system operated satisfactorily up to an organic loading rate (OLR) of 3.0 kg COD L−1 day−1 with a biogas production rate of 1.25 Lbiogas Lreactor−1 day−1 and a total COD reduction in excess of 93% (62% COD reduction in aerobic pretreatment and 83% COD reduction in anaerobic digestion). Fifty-four percent of the phenol was biodegraded during the aerobic treatment stage, and biogas with between 68% and 75% methane was produced during anaerobic digestion.  相似文献

We had proposed a novel method to reduce ammonia inhibition during thermophilic anaerobic digestion via recirculation of water-washed biogas into the headspace (R1 system) or liquid phase (R2 system) of reactors. The feasibility of reducing the ratio of recirculated biogas to biogas produced (called the biogas recirculation ratio) was investigated in the present study. Thermophilic anaerobic digestion at 53 °C and 60 °C with a biogas recirculation ratio of 150 facilitated stable digestion performance and biogas production at a higher organic loading rate of 7 g/L/d in the R1 system, while the ammonia removal efficiency increased 1.23-fold when the temperature increased from 53 °C to 60 °C. At 60 °C, the biogas recirculation ratios in the R1 and R2 systems decreased to 50 and 10, and the ammonia absorption rates were 6.1 and 8.3 mmol/L/d, respectively, without decreasing the anaerobic digestion performance. The ammonia absorption rate of 8.3 mmol/L/d in the R2 system was higher than the rate of 7.8 mmol/L/d at the biogas recirculation ratio of 150 in the R1 system. The hydrogen sulfide content in the biogas was reduced to less than 50 ppm by supplying air at 3% of the amount of biogas produced into the reactor.  相似文献

The hybrid up flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor was evaluated for efficacy in reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of bulk drug pharmaceutical wastewater under different operational conditions. The start-up of the reactor feed came entirely with glucose, applied at an organic loading rate (OLR) 1 kg COD/m3 d. Then the reactor was studied at different OLRs ranging from 2 to 11 kg COD/m3 d with pharmaceutical wastewater. The optimum OLR was found to be 9 kg COD/m3 d, where we found 65–75% COD and 80–94% of BOD reduction with biogas production containing 60–70% of methane and specific methanogenic activity was 320 ml CH4/g-VSS d. By the characterization studies of effluent using GC–MS, the hazardous compounds like phenol, l,2-methoxy phenol, 2,4,6-trichloro phenol, dibutyl phthalate, 1-bromo naphthalene, carbamazepine and antipyrine were present. After the treatment, these compounds degraded almost completely except carbamazepine. Thermophilic methanothrix and methanosaetae like bacteria are present in the granular sludge.  相似文献

Lack of nitrogenous substrate and buffering capacity have been identified as causing failure in previous work on the treatment of fruit cordial wastewater using anaerobic continuous stirred tank reactors. In this study, ammonium bicarbonate was proposed to be used as the substrate for nitrogenous and buffering resources. In order to determine the toxicity effect of the ammonium salts on the anaerobic system, a series of concentration from 0 to 40 mg L?1 was tested. Biogas production was used as the indicator for NH4+ toxicity. The results showed no indication that methanogen was affected by the additional ammonium salt within the dosing regime. Application of the specific mathematical function (G = Gmk/t) to describe the kinetic of biogas production, suggested that the optimal concentration of ammonium bicarbonate that can be used is 10 mg L?1. This study also shows that the dosage regime up to 40 mg L?1 can be used to supplement the lack of nitrogenous and buffering capacity for the anaerobic digestion process of the fruit cordial wastewater using CSTR.  相似文献

A pilot-scale Sequencing Batch Reactor was operated during 307 days in order to treat swine slurry characterized by its high variable composition: organic and nitrogen applied loading rates and C/N ratio were 1.4–6.3 kg CODs/(m3 d), 0.5–2.5 kg N/(m3 d) and 1.9–9.4 g CODs/(g N), respectively. Aerobic granules successfully developed in the reactor and their physical properties remained rather stable despite the feeding composition variability. Organic and ammonia removal efficiency reached 61–73% and 56–77%, respectively, however ammonia was mainly oxidized to nitrite. The reactor had a good biomass retention capacity to select for granular biomass. However, its efficiency to retain the solids present in the feeding was low. Aerobic granulation in SBR systems appears as an interesting alternative to treat slurry in small livestock facilities where the implementation of anaerobic digestion systems is not a feasible option or the removal of nitrogenous compounds is required.  相似文献

Methane production from two types of wool textile wastes (TW1 and TW2) was investigated. To improve the digestibility of these textiles, different pretreatments were applied, and comprised thermal treatment (at 120 °C for 10 min), enzymatic hydrolysis (using an alkaline endopeptidase at different levels of enzymatic loading, at 55 °C for 0, 2, and 8 h), and a combination of these two treatments. Soluble protein concentration and sCOD (soluble chemical oxygen demand) were measured to evaluate the effectivity of the different pretreatment conditions to degrade wool keratin. The sCOD as well as the soluble protein content had increased in both textile samples in comparison to untreated samples, as a response to the different pretreatments indicating breakdown of the wool keratin structure. The combined treatments and the thermal treatments were further evaluated by anaerobic batch digestion assays at 55 °C. Combined thermal and enzymatic treatment of TW1 and TW2 resulted in methane productions of 0.43 N m3/kg VS and 0.27 N m3/kg VS, i.e., 20 and 10 times higher yields, respectively, than that gained from untreated samples. The application of thermal treatment by itself was less effective and resulted in increasing the methane production by 10-fold for TW1 and showing no significant improvement for TW2.  相似文献

Food waste leachate (FWL) from the food waste recycling facilities in Korea is a serious environmental problem. Much research was done on anaerobic digestion of FWL in a lab-scale; however, there is little information on a large scale anaerobic digestion system (ADS). In this study, a two-phase ADS in a pilot scale was operated using FWL and the ADS performance and microbial structure dynamics using pyrosequencing were investigated. The ADS was operated for 136 days using FWL containing a high concentration of volatile fatty acid (12,435 ± 2203 mg/L), exhibiting volatile acid (VS) removal efficiency of 74–89% and CH4 yield of 0.39–0.85 Nm3/kg of reduced VS. The microbial structure at 76, 101, and 132 days indicated the methanogen population shift from acetoclastic methanogens (Methanosarcina and Methanosaeta) to hydrogenotrophic methanogens (Methanobacterium and Methanoculleus). The bacterial community also shifted to the taxa syntrophically related with hydrogenotrophic methanogens (Clostridia). The statistical analysis revealed the positive correlation of VS removal efficiency with Methanosarcina, but the negative correlation with Methanobacterium. The results presented here suggest that acetoclastic methanogens and their associated bacteria were more efficient for VS removal in the pilot scale ADS system, providing useful information for FWL treatment in a large scale ADS.  相似文献

An anaerobic submerged membrane bioreactor (AnSMBR) treating low-strength wastewater was operated for 90 days under psychrophilic temperature conditions (20 °C). Besides biogas sparging, additional shear was created by circulating sludge to control membrane fouling. The critical flux concept was used to evaluate the effectiveness of this configuration. Biogas sparging with a gas velocity (UG) of 62 m/h together with sludge circulation (94 m/h) led to a critical flux of 7 L/(m2 h). Nevertheless, a further increase in the UG only minimally enhanced the critical flux. A low fouling rate was observed under critical flux conditions. The cake layer represented the main fouling resistance after 85 days of operation. Distinctly different volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations in the reactor and in the permeate were always observed. This fact suggests that a biologically active part of the cake layer contributes to degrade a part of the daily organic load. Hence, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies of up to 94% were observed. Nevertheless, the biogas balance indicates that even considering the dissolved methane, the methane yield were always lower than the theoretical value, which indicates that the organic compounds were not completely degraded but physically retained by the membrane in the reactor.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion is widely used in bioenergy recovery from waste. In this study, a half-submerged, integrated, two-phase anaerobic reactor consisting of a top roller acting as an acidogenic unit and a recycling bottom reactor acting as a methanogenic unit was developed for the codigestion of wheat straw (WS) and fruit/vegetable waste (FVW). The reactor was operated for 21 batches (nearly 300 d). Anaerobic granular sludge was inoculated into the methanogenic unit. The residence time for the mixed waste was maintained as 10 d when the operation stabilized, and the temperature was kept at 35 °C. The highest organic loading rate was 1.37 kg VS/(m3 d), and the maximum daily biogas production was 328 L/d. Volatile solid removal efficiencies exceeded 85%. WS digestion could be confirmed, and efficiency was affected by both the ratio of WS to FVW and the loading rate. The dominant bacteria were Bacteroides-like species, which are involved in glycan and cellulose decomposition. Methanogenic community structures, pH levels, and volatile fatty acid concentrations in the acidogenic and methanogenic units differed, indicating successful phase separation. This novel reactor can improve the mass transfer and microbial cooperation between acidogenic and methanogenic units and can efficiently and steady codigest solid waste.  相似文献

A pilot-scale vertical submerged membrane bioreactor (VSMBR) with anoxic and oxic zones in one reactor was operated in an attempt to reduce the problems concerning effective removal of organic matter and nutrients from municipal wastewater. Source water with total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD)/total nitrogen (TN) ratio of 5.5 was treated at various temperatures (13–25 °C) over an interval of about 1 year. As a result, total suspended solid (TSS) and TCOD were removed by 100% and higher than 98%, respectively. Moreover, the average removal efficiencies of TN and total phosphorus (TP) were found to be 74% and 78% at 8 h-hydraulic retention time (HRT) and 60-days sludge retention time (SRT). Under these conditions, the specific removal rates (SRR) of TN and TP were found to be 0.093 kg N m−3 day−1 and 0.008 kg P m−3 day−1, and the daily production of excess sludge (DPES), 0.058 kg TSS day−1.  相似文献

Anaerobic bioenergy production processes including fermentative biohydrogen (BioH2), anaerobic digestion (AD) and bioelectrochemical system have been investigated for converting municipal waste or various biomass feedstock to useful energy carriers. However, the performance of a microbial fuel cell (MFC) fed on the effluent from a two-stage biogas production process has not yet been investigated extensively in continuous reactor operation on complex substrates. In this study we have investigated the extent to which a microbial fuel cell (MFC) can reduce COD and recover further energy from the effluent of a two-stage biohydrogen and biomethane system. The performance of a four-module tubular MFC was determined at six different organic loadings (0.036–6.149 g sCOD L−1 d−1) in terms of power generation, COD removal efficiency, coulombic efficiency (CE) and energy conversion efficiency (ECE). A power density of 3.1 W m−3 was observed at the OLR = 0.572 g sCOD L−1 d−1, which resulted in the highest CE (60%) and ECE (0.8%), but the COD removal efficiency decreased at higher organic loading rates (35.1–4.4%). The energy recovery was 92.95 J L−1 and the energy conversion efficiency, based on total influent COD was found to be 0.48–0.81% at 0.572 g sCOD L−1 d−1. However, the energy recovery by the MFC is only reported for a four-module reactor and improved performance can be expected with an extended module count, as chemical energy remained available for further electrogenesis.  相似文献

Excess sludge with low organic content always led to the failure of anaerobic digestion for methane production. Recently, the mild thermal pretreatment, which is usually operated at temperatures below 120 °C, has drawn much attention due to less energy consumption and no chemical addition. In this study the effect of mild thermal pretreatment (50–120 °C) on the solubilization and methane potential of excess sludge with a low concentration of organic matters was investigated. Experimental results showed that the concentration of soluble organic matters increased gradually with temperature during the mild thermal pretreatment of excess sludge. Biochemical methane potential experiments demonstrated that the potential of methane production from excess sludge was greatly enhanced by mild thermal pretreatment, and under the conditions of pretreatment temperature 100 °C and digestion time 20 d the methane yield was as high as 142.6 ± 2.5 mL/g of volatile solids. Mechanism investigation on the enhancement of methane production from excess sludge exhibited that the consumptions of sludge protein and carbohydrate, the adenosine 5′-triphosphate content of anaerobic microorganisms, the activities of key enzymes related to anaerobic digestion, and the amount of methanogens were all improved by mild thermal pretreatment, in correspondence with the production of methane.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibilities of replacing the energetic crop (EC) in the feed-in mixture (ingestate) with the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), in an anaerobic full-scale plant comprising four continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTRs) along with post-digester. A full-scale plant performing anaerobic digestion (AD) was monitored for 8 months, and during this period, 55 samples of both ingestates and digestates from the digesters (hydraulic retention time, HRT, of 40 d) and post-digester (HRT of 10 d) were collected before and after OFMSW introduction and analyzed for both biological and chemical parameters. The result obtained showed that substitution of EC (Mix A) with OFMSW (Mix B) did not lead to substantial modification of the feed-in mixture and AD process. Mixtures A and B gave similar specific biogas (i.e., 585 ± 198 m3 Mg TS-1 and 567 ± 162 m3 Mg TS-1 for Mix A and B, respectively), showing high process performances, i.e., 95% of the total anaerobic biogas producible was produced during the AD processes (HRT of 50 d). The digestates produced showed similar characteristics and can be potentially used in agriculture. The OFMSW offers new opportunities for farmers to produce renewable energy, by lowering the cost of the biomass and producing a useful fertilizer/amendment product.  相似文献

A large quantity of protein-rich distillery wastewater is produced during the process of bio-ethanol production from kitchen waste. It is difficult, however, to treat protein-rich distillery wastewater by anaerobic digestion due to ammonia inhibition. In this study, a novel method was investigated to reduce ammonia inhibition during thermophilic anaerobic digestion through the recirculation of water-washed biogas into the headspace (R1 system) or liquid phase (R2 system) of the reactors. The results show that the method greatly improved biogas production from distillery wastewater. R2 system achieved stable biogas production at a higher organic loading rate (OLR) of 4.0 g VTS/L/d than R1 system at 3.0 g VTS/L/d. At the same OLR, we observed a higher biogas production rate but lower accumulation of NH4+ and volatile fatty acids in the reactor, and higher ammonia absorption rate in the water tank of R2 system than R1 system. The better performance of R2 system could be attributed to the more efficient removal of ammonia from liquid phase. In addition, adjusting the C/N ratio of distillery wastewater from 9.0 to 11.4 significantly enhanced the maximum OLR from 3.0 to 7.0 g VTS/L/d in R1 system.  相似文献

This paper describes the thermophilic (55 °C) anaerobic biodegradation of a mixed feed composed of vinasses and cutting oil wastewater (COW) in a laboratory upflow anaerobic fixed-film reactor (UAFF) with a porous support medium. The experimental protocol was defined to examine the effect of increasing the percentage of cutting oil wastewater in the feed. The UAFF reactor was initially started-up with vinasses as the only carbon source at an organic loading rate of 22.3 kg COD/m3 day and HRT of 0.8 days using porous particles as the support (SIRAN). The percentage of organic matter composed of vinasses was subsequently reduced while increasing the amount of cutting oil until 100% of cutting oil wastewater was added in the feed. Four stages were considered in the study (0, 42.4, 66.6 and 100% COW). HRT was adjusted in order to maintain an approximately constant organic loading rate applied to the system. Under theses conditions, the UAFF reactor was subjected to a programme of steady-state operation with hydraulic retention times (HRT) in the range 0.8–0.15 days and organic loading rates (OLR) between 22.3 and 14.9 kg COD/m3 day in order to evaluate the treatment capacity of the system. The COD removal efficiency was found to be 87% COD and 94.6% TOC in the reactor when treating vinasses at 22.3 kg COD/m3 day. The volumetric methane level produced in the digester reached 0.45 m3/m3 day. After an operating period of 120 days, the reactor was fed with cutting oil wastewater (COW) as the only source of carbon. An OLR of 16.7 kg COD/m3 day was achieved with 85.8% COD removal efficiency (58.1%TOC) in the experimental UAFF reactor. Under these conditions the volumetric methane produced in the digester was negligible.Hence, COW can be removed, if not degraded, by anaerobic treatment in the presence of a biodegradable co-substrate. Wine vinasses degradation creates conditions for non-biological removal of COW constituents. More studies are necessary in order to test the mechanisms of organic removal when biodegradation apparently had ceased. Also, toxicity assays of COW are necessary to evaluate the toxicity to the methanogenic community.  相似文献

The wastewater produced in the process of canning fruit contains a syrup that consists mainly of sucrose. This syrup wastewater was treated by methane fermentation in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor. The organic loading rate of syrup wastewater was increased gradually as fermentation progressed. The higher the organic loading rate, the more methane gas evolved until the organic loading rate reached 30.3 kg COD m?3 d?1, at which point methane generation abruptly diminished because the loading rate was too high to stably operate the reactor. The changes in the microbial community, that of both bacteria and archaea in the granules, were analyzed simultaneously using PCR-DGGE during the fermentation process. Methanosaeta spp., which are methanogenic archaea that produce extracellular polymers indispensable for the formation of granules, were dominant when the methane gas vigorously evolved, and the iron-reducing bacterium belonging to genus Geobacter, which outcompetes methanogens, grew proportionally with the deterioration of methane fermentation.  相似文献
