The occurrence of HT-2 toxin and other trichothecenes in Norwegian cereals   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A total of 449 grain samples, 102 barley, 169 wheat and 178 oat samples were collected from different regions of Norway from 1996–1998 crops, mainly from grain loads and silos. The samples were analysed for type A and B trichothecenes, the largest groups of mycotoxins produced by the Fusarium species, by gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (GC-MS). Factors affecting the presence of the different trichothecenes are discussed. Deoxynivalenol (DON) and HT-2 toxin were the trichothecenes most frequently detected, followed by T-2 toxin, nivalenol, and scirpentriol, scirpentriol being detected only in seven samples (>20 g/kg).Oats were the grain species most heavily contaminated with an incidence(% >20 g/kg) and mean concentration of positive samples of 70%(115 g/kg) for HT-2 toxin, 30% (60 g/kg) for T-2 toxin, 57%(104 g/kg) for DON, and 10% (56 g/kg) for nivalenol. The corresponding values for barley were 22% (73 g/kg), 5% (85 g/kg),17% (155 g/kg) and 6% (30 g/kg), and for wheat 1.2% (20 g/kg),0.6% (20 g/kg), 14% (53 g/kg) and 0% for HT-2, T-2, DON and nivalenol, respectively. Norwegian oats were found to contain HT-2 and T-2 toxin in concentrations that might be at threat to human health for high consumers of oats. Axillary shoot induction and plant regeneration were obtained in Plantago ovata. The optimum medium for inducing axillary shoots was Murashige & Skoog (MS) medium [5] supplemented with 4.6 M kinetin and 0.05 M NAA. Rooting of shoots was best on half-strength MS medium containing 5.0 M IBA and 0.05 M kinetin. The regenerated plants were similar to the control plants in karyotypic and phenotypic details.  相似文献

Summary The non-tandem inverted duplication in the 2-m DNA of Saccharomyces cerevisiae has a length of 0.19 m and is located asymmetrically along the molecule. The majority of the dumb-bell structures that are formed upon denaturation and selfannealing of the 2-m monomer consists of the renatured inverted duplication sequences as double stranded stem and two single stranded loops of 0.67 m±0.06 m (S-loop) and 0.86 m±0.05 m (L-loop) length. Two additional size classes which comprised 5–10% of the measured molecules had contour lengths of around 1.7 m and 2.1 m. The smaller dumb-bells contained two S-loops and the larger dumb-bells contained two L-loops as was shown by heteroduplex mapping with an HindIII fragment from the L-loop. Two models which assume illegitimate or site specific recombination, are presented to explain the generation of double S-loop and double L-loop molecules. At least part of the 4-m and 6- circular molecules present in the yeast supercoiled DNA fraction are shown to be dimers and trimers of 2-m monomers, but often with inverted loop segments most probably due to intramolecular recombination between sequences of the inverted duplication.2-m DNA is used to indicate the supercoiled DNA fraction although in our measurements the average monomeric length is 1.9 mPart of this work has been presented at the Conference: The Genetics and Biogenesis of Chloroplasts and Mitochondria, Munich, August, 1976  相似文献

A tissue culture method for regeneration of plantlets from calluses of Dioscorea composita Hemsl. and Dioscorea cayenensis L. is described. Zygotic embryos were used as initial explants. Calluses were obtained on Murashige & Skoog basal medium supplemented with 18 M 2,4-D and plantlets were regenerated on media containing 0.1 M zeatin and 3.3 mM glutamine according to previously described protocols [3]. Inclusion of 0.3% (w/v) activated charcoal in media did not increase callusing. Regeneration of plantlets from D. cayenensis calluses occurred only at low levels of 2,4-D (2.25 M) contained in the media tested. The results indicated that there were genotype-dependent differences between the yam species in their ability to regenerate plantlets in vitro.  相似文献

Root segments (1 cm long) were excised from 15–20 day old seedlings of silktree (Albizzia julibrissin) grown on B5 medium. About 50% of the control (no growth regulators added) root explants formed shoot buds within 15 days after placement on the culture medium. After 30 days, there were about 4 shoots per control explant. Addition of low levels of various auxins (0.5 M) did not influence the formation of shoot buds from the explants. Higher concentrations (5M), however, decreased shoot regeneration. Kinetin and 2iP did not influence shoot regeneration at the concentrations tested (1 & 10 M). Addition of benzyladenine, Zeatin, or thidiazuron to the culture medium increased both the percentage of explants that formed shoots and the number of shoots per explant. Thidiazuron was highly effective in stimulating shoot formation at low concentrations (<1 M). At 0.05 M thidiazuron, 95% of the explants produced shoots and about 10 shoots were formed per explant. Compared to TDZ, higher concentrations (10 M) of benzyladenine and Zeatin were required to enhance shoot formation. The effect of individual unsaturated fatty acids on the release of tumour necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin 6 (IL6) was investigated in thioglycollate — induced rat peritoneal macrophages. The intracellular mechanisms associated with the changes of cytokine production in response to fatty acids were also studied. Incubation of macrophages with 100 M docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) increased TNF (21% and 15% respectively) and IL6 (69% and 40% respectively) production. Linoleic acid (LA) diminished TNF production by 16%. At 100 M oleic acid (OA), LA and EPA concentration an increase in macrophage adenylate cyclase activity (110%, 72% and 39% respectively) and a decrease (14%) in the presence of DHA was observed. PGE2 production in the presence of 100 M DHA was reduced by 36%, whereas in the presence of 100 M LA an increase (75%) was observed. Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activity was also found to be modified in the presence of EPA and DHA at 50 M (20% and 60% respectively) and 100 M (34% and 62% respectively) concentrations. The activities of both protein kinase A (PKA) and protein kinase C (PKC) were effected by the different fatty acids. At 50 M all fatty acids suppressed PKA activity except OA which enhanced PKA activity by 14%. At 100 M fatty acid concentration, EPA suppressed PKA activity by 40%. PKC activity was enhanced by LA and OA, by 18% and 21% respectively. However, at 100 M EPA and DHA, PKC activity was suppressed by 37% and 17% respectively, whereas PKC activity was enhanced by 146% in the presence of 100 M LA. These results show for the first time that unsaturated fatty acids have an effect on macrophage PLA2 activity and that PGE2 may be a potent modulator of IL6 production. From these studies it is tempting to speculate that macrophage TNF and IL6 release may, in part, occur via a PKC and PKA independent pathway and that PLA2 activity and PGE2 concentration are inversely related to production of TNF and IL6.  相似文献

Somatic embryo formation was induced from cotyledon explants of Styrian pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L. subsp. pepo var. styriaca Greb.) by using a solid MS medium supplemented with 16.11M NAA and 4.44M BA or 26.85M NAA and 13.32M BA. The callus proliferation was more efficient on medium supplemented with 26.85M NAA and 13.32M BA. In contrast, the embryogenic response was higher on medium with lower concentrations of growth regulators (16.11M NAA and 4.44M BA). The time needed for embryo induction did not depend on medium composition. Embryos in globular stage were transferred to three different maturation media, containing 2.89M GA3 in combination with 0.54M NAA, 11.42M IAA and growth regulator-free medium. The germination rate was the highest when embryos were cultured on medium with 11.42M IAA. Plantlets grown on this medium achieved maturity suitable for transplantation into soil within 9 to 10weeks. The regenerated plants were successfully transferred into field and developed fertile flowers and set fruits. Biochemical analysis showed significant lower total glutathione levels among in vitro grown plantlets compared to seedlings grown in soil. When the plantlets were transferred into soil, they reached a normal size within a month and the glutathione concentration was comparable to seed-derived plants at the same developmental stage. Transmission electron microscopy was used to investigate possible differences in the ultrastructure of cells from callus cultures, and leaf cells of regenerated and seed-derived plants. Differences in the ultrastructure were found within chloroplasts which contained only single thylakoids, large starch grains and small plastoglobuli in callus cells in comparison to leaf cells, which possessed a well developed thylakoid system, small starch grains and large plastoglobuli.  相似文献

The functions of the microtubule (MT) cytoskeleton in changing the orientation of microfibrils (MFs) in the cell walls of the coenocytic green alga Chaetomorpha moniligera Kjellman were investigated by electron microscopy. The cortical MT cytoskeleton in Chaetomorpha was comprised of longitudinally oriented MTs. Cellulose MFs, however, alternately changed their orientation longitudinally and transversely to form crisscross MF textures. Microtubules were parallel to longitudinally oriented MFs but never to those that were transversely oriented. The average density of MTs during the formation of longitudinally oriented MFs was 216 per 50 m of wall and that of transversely oriented MFs 170/50 m. To determine exactly the MT-density dependency of each MF orientation, changes in MF orientation were examined by changing MT density after treating and removing amiprophos-methyl (APM). Microtubules were reduced in number by a half (100/50 m) after 2 h and by 3/4 (50/50 m) after 3 h of treatment with APM (3 mM). This reduction was caused by the disappearance of alternating MTs. Microtubules retained this density (50/ 50 m) up to 6 h, and then gradually disappeared within 24 h. Microfibril orientation in the innermost cell wall was transverse after treatment with APM for 2 h but was helicoidal after 6 h. Polymerization of MTs occurred in the longitudinal direction following the removal of APM after treatment for 48 h. Microtubule density rose to about 100/50 m and 200/50 m after 6 h and 24 h, respectively. The orientation of MTs changed from helicoidal to transverse and transverse to longitudinal after 6 h and 24 h, respectively. When APM was removed prior to formation of the helicoidal texture, longitudinally oriented MFs appeared within 6 h. There is thus an alternating cycle of formation of longitudinally and transversely oriented MFs within a 12-h period. Formation of transversely oriented MFs as a result of APM treatment started in the middle of a cell as hoops which then extended in the apical and basal directions. Formation of longitudinally oriented MFs as a result of the removal of APM started from the apical end and proceeded toward the base. It follows from these results that: (1) the point of formation of longitudinally oriented MFs differs from that for transversely oriented MFs, (2) MF orientation in each case depends on a separately functioning mechanism, (3) MT density changes rhythmically to trigger a switch for crisscross orientation of MFs.Abbreviations APM amiprophos-methyl - MF microfibril - MT microtubule - TC terminal complex We thank Dr. K. A micromanipulation method is described for measuring the bursting forces of bacteria and relating them to cell size. At a compression speed of 6.2 m s–1, bursting forces of three samples of rapidly growing Staphylococcus epidermis from a batch culture varied from 3 to 34 N with an average value of 13.8 N (standard error 0.8 N). Escherichia coli grown in continuous culture at a specific growth rate of 0.5 h–1 had bursting forces varying from 1 to 9 N with an average value of 3.6 N (standard error 0.4 N). In squeeze-hold experiments, force relaxation was observed, which was attributed to water loss from the cells, or viscoelasticity, or both. At high compression speed, such as 6.2 m s–1, this relaxation could be neglected. Micromanipulation strength measurements might be used in studies of cell mechanical disruption and of the dependence of cell strength on cell physiology.  相似文献

Summary The effect of a non-indole compound, phenylacetic acid (PAA), on the induction of somatic embryogenesis in tissue cultures of geranium (Pelargonium x hortorum Bailey cv. Scarlet Orbit Improved) was investigated. Hypocotyl explants derived from young, dark-grown seedlings were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (1962) medium (MS) supplemented with PAA or IAA (0.01–120 M) alone or in combination with BAP (8 M). Somatic embryogenesis was induced by both PAA and IAA at 0.01–20 M with 8 M BAP, however, the optima differed considerably for the two compounds. Maximal activity of IAA for somatic embryogenesis was found at 0.1–2.5 M, whereas PAA gave best results at 10 and 20 M under identical culture conditions. Asparagus maritimus L. Miller is a rare species growing of the Mediterranean region and is morphologically similar to A. officinalis. In order to establish an efficient in vitro propagation protocol, explants were excised from spear segments and cultured on Murashige and Skoog (1962) medium containing 3% sucrose and various concentrations of growth regulators. The best shoot initiation (3–4 per explant) was achieved on a medium containing 0.88 M N6-benzyladenine (BA), 0.93 M kinetin, 1.07 M -naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 3.90 M ancymidol. Shoot initiation could also be achieved without ancymidol but the shoots were thinner and longer. A very high shoot multiplication rate was achieved on media supplemented with 3% sucrose, 1.07 M NAA, 0.93 M kinetin, 0.44 M BA and various concentrations of ancymidol. The lowest concentration of ancymidol (0.39 M) significantly promoted the highest shoot multiplication rate (11.9 shoots/crown). For root formation, media were supplemented with 6% sucrose, 1.07 M NAA and various concentrations of ancymidol. Rooting frequency increased with higher ancymidol concentration up to 5.07 M (82.0% rooting). The number of ex vitro shoots formed was strongly correlated (r=0.66) with the length of roots formed in vitro, which was the highest at a 1.95 M ancymidol.  相似文献

Pseudomonas maltophilia is an uncommon cause of hospital-acquired infection and is resistant to most of the antimicrobial agents used in the treatment of gram-negative infections. Susceptibility of 108 isolates ofP. maltophilia to ceftazidime, aztreonam, defpirome, gentamicin, imipenem, enoxacin, and ticarcillin plus clavulanic acid was determined by an agar dilution method. The isolates were in general resistant to the antibiotics. Imipenem and cefpirome were not active at clinically achievable levels. Of the isolates, 20% were susceptible to 16 g/ml ceftazidime, 53% were susceptible to 4 g/ml enoxacin, 10% were susceptible to 4 g/ml gentamicin, and 25% were susceptible to 64 g/ml ticarcillin plus 2 g/ml clavulanic acid.  相似文献

Primary productivity, biomass and chlorophyll-a of size fractionated phytoplankton (<0.22 m, <3 m, <8 m, <10 m, <40 m, <64 m, <112 m and <200 m) were estimated in 6 ponds and 5 experimental enclosures. The results showed that the planktonic algae less than 10 m are important in the biomass and production of phytoplankton in saline–alkaline ponds. The production of size fractionated phytoplankton corresponding to <112 m, <10 m and <3 m in saline–alkaline ponds were 10.5 ± 6.6 , 8.6 ± 5.4 and 0.33 ± 0.1 mgC l–1 d–1, respectively. Mean community respiration rate was 1.80 ± 0.73, 1.69 ± 0.90 and 1.38 ± 1.12 mgC l–1 d–1, respectively. The average production of phytoplankton corresponding to micro- (10–112 m), nano- (3–10 m) and pico- (<3 m) were 1.61, 8.30 and 0.33 mgC l–1 d–1, respectively. The ratio of those to the total phytoplankton production was 15%, 79% and 3%, respectively. The mean respiration rate of the different size groups was 0.11, 0.31 and 1.38 mgC l–1 d–1; the ratio of those to total respiration of phytoplankton was 6%, 17% and 77%, respectively. The production of size-fractionated phytoplankton corresponding to <200 m, <10 m and <3 m in enclosures was 2.19 ± 1.63, 2.08 ± 1.75 and 0.22 ± 0.08 mgC l–1 d-1, respectively. Mean community respiration rates were 1.25 ± 1.55, 1.17 ± 1.42 and 0.47 ± 0.32 mgC l–1 d–1, respectively. The average production of phytoplankton corresponding to micro- (10–200 m), nano- (3–10 m) and pico- (<3 m) plankton was 0.11, 1.86 and 0.22 mgC l–1 d–1, respectively. The ratio of those to the total production of phytoplankton was 5%, 85% and 10%, respectively. The mean respiration rate of different size groups were 0.08, 0.72 and 0.46 mgC l–1 d–1, the ratio of those to total respiration of phytoplankton was 6%, 57% and 37%, respectively. The concentrations of chlorophyll-a of the phytoplankton in the corresponding size of micro- (10–112 m), nano- (3–10 m) and pico- (<3 m) plankton in the experimental ponds were 19.3, 98.2 and 11. 9 g l–1, respectively. The ratio of those to the total chlorophyll-a was 15%, 76% and 9%, respectively. The concentrations of chlorophyll-a of phytoplankton micro- (10–200 m), nano- (3–10 m) and pico- (<3 m) plankton in enclosures were 1.7, 34.3 and 3.0 g l–1, respectively. Conversion of methanol to CH4 has a large isotope effect so that a small contribution of methanol-dependent CH4 production may decrease the 13CH4 of total CH4 production. Therefore, we investigated the role of methanol for CH4 production. Methanol was not detectable above 10 M in anoxic methanogenic rice field soil. Nevertheless, addition of 13C-labeled methanol (99% enriched) resulted in immediate accumulation of 13CH4. Addition of 0.1 M 13C-methanol resulted in increase of the 13CH4 from –47 to –6 within 2 h, followed by a slow decrease. Addition of 1 M 13C-methanol increased 13CH4 to +500 within 4 h, whereas 10 M increased 13CH4 to +2500 and continued to increase. These results indicate that the methanol concentrations in situ, which diluted the 13C-methanol added, were 0.1 M and that the turnover of methanol contributed only about 2% to total CH4 production at 0.1 M. However, contribution increased up to 5 and 17% when 1 and 10 M methanol were added, respectively. Anoxic rice soil that was incubated at different temperatures between 10 and 37 °C exhibited maximally 2–6% methanol-dependent methanogenesis about 1–2 h after addition of 1 M 13C-methanol. Only at 50 °C, contribution of methanol to CH4 production reached a maximum of 10%. After longer (7–10 h) incubation, however, contribution generally was only 2–4%. Methanol accumulated in the soil when CH4 production was inhibited by chloroform. However, the accumulated methanol accounted for only up to 0.7 and 1.2% of total CH4 production at 37 and 50 °C, respectively. Collectively, our results show that methanol-dependent methanogenesis was operating in anoxic rice field soil but contributed only marginally to total CH4 production and the isotope effect observed at both low and high temperature.  相似文献

Summary Scanning electron microscopy was used on the mucosa of the rat urinary bladder after digestion with strong alkali and microdissection. The underside of the epithelium (and the plane of the epithelium-tunica propria interface) is not smooth but is scored by grooves-10 m wide and 3–4 m deep—connected into a fine mesh. A net of blood capillaries located in the uppermost part of the tunica propria occupies these grooves. They measure 3–9 m in diameter, are separated from the epithelium by a gap of 0.3 m, often show fenestrations, and are accompanied by numerous and extensive pericytes and by some fibroblasts. We discuss these observations in the light of current knowledge of blood flow in the bladder, contraction and distension of the bladder wall and formation of mucosal folds, transport of solutes through the epithelium, and plasma extravasation from mucosal blood vessels in neurogenic inflammation.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopical investigations of fractures and corrosion casts of the spiracles from femaleA. walkerae ticks revealed a four-part structure, consisting of spiracular plate, ostium and macula forming the external closure, followed by the subostial space and the vestibulum of regulable volume, as well as the atrial chamber as the innermost part from which the main tracheal trunks originate. On the average, the spiracular plate was 158 m long and 188 m at the broadest width. It consisted of a thin, highly perforated external and a thick internal layer, which enclosed the interpedicellar space with numerous stout pedicels. In its posterior region, the spiracular plate was covered by the macula, which was up to 80 m in length and 110 m in width. The interpedicellar cavity opened into the subostial space measuring 95.5 m in length and 159.6m in width, which proceeded into the 112-m long vestibulum. The roof of the vestibulum was flexible and could be everted and inverted. Inverted, the roof formed a quadratic bulge with numerous deep cuticular folds, which confined the lumen of the vestibulum either partially or completely. In corrosion casts, the roof was everted to a length of up to 89.3 m. In the posterior part of the vestibulum, as well as in the initial fourth of the artrial chamber, numerous anvil-, cone-or drop-like cuticular projections were arranged in wedge-like fashion. The atrial chamber was almost spherical with a diameter of 138.4 m. Five main tracheal trunks of different luminal diameter as well as numerous channels opened into the atrial chamber.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Die schwachelektrischen Mormyridae haben eine dreischichtige Epidermis, deren innere Schicht aus nur etwa 0,22 m dicken sechseckigen Zellen von ca. 60 m Durchmesser besteht. Die etwa 2 m dicken, linsenförmigen Kerne von 7,6 m Durchmesser liegen am Zellrand. Die Zellen sind zu Säulen aufgeschichtet. Ihr Rand ist ausgezackt und dort, wo er die Säulengrenze erreicht, auf etwa 0,34 m verdickt. In der Nähe der Säulengrenzen sind die Zellen über Desmosomen mit den Nachbarn in der eigenen und in der angrenzenden Säule verbunden. Diese Epidermisschicht ist auf die Körperpartien beschränkt, in denen auch Elektrorezeptoren ausgebildet sind.Die beiden anderen Epidermisschichten haben den üblichen Aufbau einer Fischepidermis, abgesehen vom Fehlen der Becherzellen.
Ultrastructure of the electroceptor epidermis of the Mormyridae (Teleostei, Pisces)
Summary The weakly electric fish of the family Mormyridae have a three layered epidermis, with a medium layer consisting of hexagonal cells of only 0.22 m in thickness and about 60 m in diameter. The lens-shaped nuclei are about 2 m thick and 7.6 m in diameter and are situated near the border of the cells. The cells are piled up to hexagonal columns. Their margin is serrate and where it reaches the boundary of the column, it has a thickness of about 0.34 m. Close to the boundaries of the columns, the cells are linked to their neighbours within the column and of the adjoining column by desmosomes. This layer of the epidermis is confined to those regions of the body surface which also contain electroreceptors.The other layers of the epidermis have a structure as usual in fish, except for the lack of goblet cells.

Maximum inhibition of Glycine max, cv. Essex seed germination occurred at 10 g/ml following 72 hr imbibition in constant light. Seeds imbided 108 hr in constant darkness at this concentration showed a 20% rise in germination over that of the control. Imbibition of G. max, cv. Williams seeds in either light or dark for 96 hr did not suppress germination. Imbibition of Essex seeds in either light or dark at 2.5 through 10 g/ml stimulated root elongation except for 10 g/ml at 96 hr (light). Maximum inhibition of Williams root elongation under constant light was at 48 and 72 hr with 10 g/ml. Statistically significant differences in cotyledon, leaf and stem lengths between non-treated (NT) and treated (T) seedlings were not found except for Williams stem length at 2.5 / ml. Root elongation was stimulated 1.2- and 1.1-folds, respectively, at 5.0 (Essex) and 2.5 (Williams) g/ml. Toxin at 2.5 through 10.0 g/ml did not markedly alter either cotyledon or leaf widths with the exception of Williams leaf width at 2.5 g/ml. Medium supplementation with 2.5 through 10.0 g/ml resulted in cotyledon, leaf and root weight enhancements for Essex seedlings. Stem weight was not markedly affected. An 18% rise in Williams cotyledon weight above that of the control was seen at 2.5 g/ml. Williams leaf weights were increased 1.75- and 1.25-folds, respectively, at 2.5 and 10.0 g/ml. Aflatoxin B1, at 2.5 g/ml promoted Williams stem and root elongation 1.20- and 1.09-folds, respectively. Most of the radioactivity from 65Zn-ZnCl2 recovered within organs was found within Essex roots for both T and NT seedlings. A higher amount of radioactivity was recovered within roots at each toxin concentration than was without toxin. However, this was not statistically significant. Significant differences in the distribution of radioactivity within roots between NT and T Williams seedlings were not observed. Summary Retrograde diffusion and precipitation of Co2+ reveals in the ipsilateral pars lateralis (PL) and contralateral pars intercerebralis (PI) of the brain neurons that enter the corpus cardiacum (CC), and, possibly, the corpus allatum (CA) on each side. The PL group consists of 29.6±8.4 somata that fill. Of these, 5.6±0.6 exceed 25 m in diameter, 14.3±2.7 range from 15–25 m, and 9.6±7.6 are smaller than 15 m. After CoCl2 was applied to the right CC-CA of two males, 239 and 265 somata in the left PI stained. Except for 16 ranging from 30–45 m and chiefly located anteriorly, a majority of these somata measured 10–25 m.The only somata revealed by staining whole brains with the performic acid-resorcin fuchsin method are neurosecretory cells 10–20 m in diameter located within the PI. In starved adult males there are 92.4±8.1 on the right, and 93.2±6.9 on the left. The largest somata in the PL group contain numerous granules that stain with paraldehyde fuchsin. These somata also fill with Co2+, and belong to neurosecretory cells that extend into the CC-CA.The cerebral distribution of branches from the PL group, and the relationship of these to the corpora pedunculata, central body, and arborizations from the PI decussation are described.  相似文献

Plantlet formation through organogenesis in callus cultures of Himalayan yellow poppy,Meconopsis paniculata D.Don (Prain), a threatened taxon of ornamental value, is described. Hypocotyl segments from 3-month-old laboratory-raised seedlings produced callus on agar-solidified Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) containing 10 M -naphthaleneacetic acid and 1 M kinetin. Shoots differentiated best from callus on MS containing 10 M indolebutyric acid (IBA) and 1 M 6-benzyladenine. The regenerated shoots rooted best on MS medium containing 10 M IBA.
