Current evidence suggests regular overland transport of different freshwater invertebrates by wind, mainly over short distances. Yet, very little is known about the mechanism and scale of this process or about differences in wind dispersal dynamics and capacities among taxa and propagule types. We investigated wind dispersal of freshwater invertebrates in a cluster of temporary rock pools (spatial scale: 9,000 m2) in South Africa. Dispersing propagules and propagule bank fragments (i.e. aggregates of sediments and propagules) were intercepted during 1 month using a combination of windsocks (1.5 m above ground level) and sticky traps (ground level). The potential movement of propagule bank fragments (i.e. aggregates of propagules and sediments) was also simulated by tracking inter-pool movements of differently sized artificial substrate fragments similar to dry propagule bank fragments. We detected differences in the composition of dispersing communities intercepted at different altitudes (ground level and at 1.5 m). Comparison of dispersal distance distributions also revealed significant differences among taxa. Overall, larger propagule types (e.g. adult ostracods and oribatid mites) dominantly travelled near ground level while small resting eggs and cryptobiotic life stages of copepods were most frequently collected at higher altitudes (1.5 m) and dispersed over the longest distances. Finally, not only dispersal of single propagules but also ground level transport of propagule bank fragments was shown to contribute to local dispersal dynamics in temporary aquatic habitats.  相似文献

Long distance dispersal (LDD) of propagules is an important determinant of population dynamics, community structuring and biodiversity distribution at landscape, and sometimes continental, scale. Although migratory animals are potential LDD vectors, migratory movement data have never been integrated in estimates of propagule dispersal distances and LDD probability. Here we integrated migratory movement data of two waterbird species (mallard and teal) over two continents (Europe and North America) and gut retention time of different propagules to build a simple mechanistic model of passive dispersal of aquatic plants and zooplankton. Distance and frequency of migratory movements differed both between waterbird species and continents, which in turn resulted in changes in the shapes of propagule dispersal curves. Dispersal distances and the frequency of LDD events (generated by migratory movements) were mainly determined by the disperser species and, to a lesser extent, by the continent. The gut retention time of propagules also exerted a significant effect, which was mediated by the propagule characteristics (e.g. seeds were dispersed farther than Artemia cysts). All estimated dispersal curves were skewed towards local‐scale dispersal and, although dispersal distances were lower than previous estimates based only on the vector flight speed, had fat tails produced by LDD events that ranged from 230 to 1209 km. Our results suggest that propagule dispersal curves are determined by the migratory strategy of the disperser species, the region (or flyway) through which the disperser population moves, and the propagule characteristics. Waterbirds in particular may frequently link wetlands separated by hundreds of kilometres, contributing to the maintenance of biodiversity and, given the large geographic scale of the dispersal events, to the readjustment of species distributions in the face of climate change.  相似文献

Propagule size has important consequences on the genetic structure of wind-dispersed species, as species with small propagules have higher capability of long-distance dispersal. Here, we studied reproductive modes and compared local and regional population structures in three Macaronesian lichenized fungi differing in propagule size. First, we quantified size distribution of propagules in each species. Second, genotype simulations based on microsatellite data were used to infer the reproductive mode. Third, using spatial analysis and population genetic approaches, we quantified the local and regional scale genetic structures of the fungal species. The three species differed in size distributions of propagules. The majority of populations exhibited clonal reproductive mode. Identical reproductive modes occurred often across species in the same sites, implying a possible relationship between reproductive mode and local site conditions. Contrary to expectation, at the local scale, the species exhibited similar patterns of spatial autocorrelation in genotypes. However, in agreement with the expectation based on propagule size, the species with highest frequency of small vegetative propagules (L. pulmonaria) exhibited lowest regional genetic differentiation. Nevertheless, altogether, our results show that propagule size is not a good predictor of population subdivision in lichenized fungi, neither at local nor regional spatial scale.  相似文献

调查了小兴安岭谷地云冷杉林1.5 hm2(100 m×150 m)固定样地内的物种组成和径级结构,用点格局方法分析样地内主要种群的空间格局和空间关联性以及林隙形成木的空间格局.结果表明: 样地内胸径≥2 cm的乔木有13种,种群密度差异大,重要值在前4位的为臭冷杉、红皮云杉、白桦和花楷槭.种群的径级结构近似倒“J”形.臭冷杉和红皮云杉空间分布相似,随空间尺度的变化趋势为聚集 随机 均匀分布.白桦在≤40 m尺度为聚集分布,>40 m尺度变为随机分布,而花楷槭在整个研究尺度上均为聚集分布.除白桦和花楷槭两者间在整个研究尺度上均为负相关以外,其余种群间均为小尺度上正相关、大尺度上负相关.臭冷杉和白桦种群间正相关的显著性强,其他种群间正相关性普遍较弱.样地内林隙形成木的空间格局表现为中小尺度聚集分布,随尺度增大趋于随机分布.掘根形成的林隙形成木的空间点格局呈单峰型分布,随机、聚集和均匀3种分布均有出现.折干形成的林隙形成木的空间点格局分布整体波动不大,小尺度上在随机和聚集分布间交替出现,到大尺度则归于随机分布.两者间的空间关联性分析表明,≤32 m尺度为显著正相关,>32 m尺度为不显著的负相关.  相似文献

以山西省翅果油树自然保护区翅果油树(Elaeagnus mollis)种群为研究对象,采用点格局分析中的O-ring统计方法,利用Programita软件对翅果油树群落中主要物种翅果油树、荆条(Vitex negundo var.heterophylla)和黄刺玫(Rosa xanthina)种群的分布格局及其相互关系进行了分析。结果表明:(1)各种群在相对小的尺度上聚集分布特征明显,随尺度增加各种群主要表现出随机分布特征;(2)各树种间的空间关联性主要表现在小尺度范围,随尺度加大空间关联性逐渐不明显;(3)翅果油树种群径级I、II和III在较小尺度时存在明显的聚集分布,径级IV、V和VI在所有尺度上均呈现随机分布;(4)翅果油树种群径级I和II与径级IV、V和VI存在正关联,同时径级I与VI,径级II与V在一定尺度上表现出空间负关联,相邻径级在空间分布上相关性不显著。  相似文献

Biocontrol agents of numerous insect pests and fungal pathogens exist but virtually nothing is known about their interaction if used simultaneously. Our objective was to investigate the compatibility of the entomopathogens Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus, and the broad host-range mycoparasites Clonostachys spp., Trichoderma harzianum and Lecanicillium lecanii. In vitro host-range tests revealed that M. anisopliae was highly susceptible to all mycoparasites tested. B. bassiana was attacked by Clonostachys rosea, and P. fumosoroseus. was resistant to mycoparasites. M. anisopliae but not P. fumosoroseus killed nymphs of Bemisia tabaci in bioassays. B. bassiana and M. anisopliae proved lethal to Cosmopolites sordidus, Diatraea saccharalis and Sitophilus oryzae. Coapplication of mycoparasites with entomopathogens did not affect their biocontrol efficacy in vivo, although the reisolation success of entomopathogens could be significantly reduced, especially from smaller insect species. Trichoderma spp. were reisolated from mycoparasite-treated insects more frequently than C. rosea. The coapplication of the highly susceptible M. anisopliae generally enhanced mycoparasite recovery. Mycofungicide preparations caused some insect mortality but less than a copper hydroxide fungicide which is still permissible in organic agriculture. We concluded that the tested entomopathogens and mycoparasites are compatible elements of integrated pest management.  相似文献

The process of dispersal is critical to marine benthic species (i.e. invertebrates and algae) as a fundamental element of population ecology and a crucial ecological process that maintains the diversity in communities. We simultaneously sampled the abundance of spores inhabiting the water column at different distances from known parent sources at 3 sites along the coast of central Chile. From these data we constructed 258 dispersal curves for common rocky intertidal macroalgae. Only 43.8% of these curves could be predicted by the expected model, which describes the spatial distribution of propagules to be dominated by a larger concentration near the parent individual or “source site”, followed by a marked decrease in abundance with increasing distance. The curves that departed from the expected model (56.2%) were grouped into three curve types, according to the number of propagule abundance maxima observed in space. This work suggests that macroalgal propagule dispersal patterns are more variable than previously thought. The existence of several alternative curves to the expected model, as well as the presence of one to several abundance maxima associated with the differential distribution of propagule patches in the water column, suggests the idea that propagules are released in pulses which can be transported variable distances from the source site.  相似文献

The evolution of parasite virulence is thought to involve a trade‐off between parasite reproductive rate and the effect of increasing the number of propagules on host survivorship. Such a trade‐off should lead to selection for an intermediate level of within‐host reproduction (λ). Here I consider the effects of parasite propagule number on selection affecting λ when (i) the effect of each propagule is independent of propagule number, and (ii) when the effect of each propagule changes as a function of propagule number. Virulence evolves in these models as a correlated response to selection on λ. If each propagule has the same effect (s) as all previous propagules, the survivorship of infected hosts is reduced by more than 60% at equilibrium, independent of the value of s. If, instead, each propagule has a more negative effect on host survivorship than previous propagules, host survivorship at equilibrium is expected to increase as the effect becomes more pronounced. These results are directly parallel to results derived for population mean fitness at mutation‐selection balance; and they suggest that high virulence should be associated with parasites for which the effect of adding propagules either remains constant or diminishes with propagule number.  相似文献

Quantification of spatial variation is important for analyzing and predicting the environmental and social impacts of land development. This paper presents a density-based framework to analyze spatial variations within land use/cover classes through a case study of the Nanchang area, China. By means of grid sampling, the categorical patches were represented by grid densities, and spatial indicators of class abundance, scale-area curve and neighborhood density were constructed to measure the spatial variables of area, distance and scale. The scale variations within each class were demonstrated by abundance indicators and were divided into three types with different similarity degrees, which were measured by coefficients of congruence. These variations roughly corresponded to the distribution patterns revealed by the scale-area indicators. The scaling behaviors of these patterns exhibited discontinuity and coherence, which were possibly affected by the change rates of some patch characteristics in the classes. The neighborhood density indicators showed that every class was more aggregated at short distances, while multimodal patterns fluctuating in nearly random distributions occurred at considerable distances. The degree of clumping correlated positively with the abundance of each class. The characteristics of distribution sizes, ranges and patch isolation in these classes left some imprints on the variations in aggregation intensity. These findings have implications for data integration, mechanism exploration and methodological framework, which are also needed for management practices.  相似文献

Abstract. Drift of aquatic macrophyte propagules was investigated in a wetland along the River Rhône, during the first flood after the growing season (i.e. in the winter of 1995–1996). Input and output drift were studied at the beginning, around the top, and at the end of the river overflow in the upper reach of a cut-off channel. The soil propagule bank was sampled along the study area before and after the flood. The amount and composition of viable propagule drift and bank were determined, analysed and compared. Drift densities and richness were on average higher at the outlet of the channel than at the inlet (respectively: 23.2 vs 13.1 viable propagules/100 m3 of water and 8.7 vs 2.6 taxa per sample). Immigrating taxa were mostly in the form of helophyte seeds, whereas numerous resident hydrophyte species left the disturbed area rather as vegetative propagules. Temporal variability in propagule bank structure was weak, and mean bank densities did not change before and after the flood (respectively: 33 047 ± 10 510 vs 35 653 ± 15 070 viable propagules/m2 of ground, including Chara). However, the density of Elodea canadensis significantly increased after the flood while that of Eleocharis acicularis decreased. This contrast suggests that flood responses vary among species. Despite a broad overlap in the taxa (18 out of 25 were common both to drift and bank collections), no significant relationship occurred in composition or structural changes between flood drift and propagule bank. Flood acted as a means of distribution of existing propagules and also as a provider of new vegetative dispersal units.  相似文献

Most previous attempts to model the geographical range expansion of an invading species assume random dispersal of organisms through a homogeneous environment. These models result in a series of uniformly increasing circles radiating out from the centre of origin over time. Although these models often give reasonable fits to available data, they do not typically include mechanisms of dispersal. Alternatively, models that include assumptions of non‐random dispersal and a heterogeneous environment inevitably result in an anisotropic or jagged invasion front. This front will include propagules of pioneer individuals for the expanding species. Existing data from biological invasions reveal that the spatial structure of an invading species usually exhibits these propagules. Using population data gathered from the past century, we investigated the propagules of two North American invading bird species: the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris Linnaeus), and the house finch (Carpodacus mexicanus Müller), and found a correlation between propagule location and habitat quality. These results suggest that dispersing individuals seek out favourable habitat and remain there, thus introducing a possible mechanism for explaining non‐uniform dispersal during invasions. When combined with results from other studies, our results suggest that propagules provide starting points for future population expansion of an invading species.  相似文献

Historically, pycnidial fungi belonging to the genus Ampelomyces were among the first mycoparasites to be studied in detail and were also the first fungi used as biocontrol agents of plant parasitic fungi. The interactions between host plants, powdery mildew fungi and Ampelomyces mycoparasites are one of the most evident cases of tritrophic relationships in nature although their study has received little attention in fungal and plant ecology so far. Ampelomyces mycoparasites have now become one of the most advanced in terms of commercial development of a fungal biocontrol agent, although there is still a need for more development work to produce a product with reliability approaching that of conventional chemical treatments. This review summarizes the taxonomy, genetic diversity, life cycle, mode of action, natural occurrence, host range, biocontrol potential, mass production and commercialization of these mycoparasites and compares the biocontrol ability of Ampelomyces with that of other fungal antagonists of powdery mildews.  相似文献

In theory, conservation genetics predicts that forest fragmentation will reduce gene dispersal, but in practice, genetic and ecological processes are also dependent on other population characteristics. We used Bayesian genetic analyses to characterize parentage and propagule dispersal in Heliconia acuminata L. C. Richard (Heliconiaceae), a common Amazonian understory plant that is pollinated and dispersed by birds. We studied these processes in two continuous forest sites and three 1‐ha fragments in Brazil's Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project. These sites showed variation in the density of H. acuminata. Ten microsatellite markers were used to genotype flowering adults and seedling recruits and to quantify realized pollen and seed dispersal distances, immigration of propagules from outside populations, and reproductive dominance among parents. We tested whether gene dispersal is more dependent on fragmentation or density of reproductive plants. Low plant densities were associated with elevated immigration rates and greater propagule dispersal distances. Reproductive dominance among inside‐plot parents was higher for low‐density than for high‐density populations. Elevated local flower and fruit availability is probably leading to spatially more proximal bird foraging and propagule dispersal in areas with high density of reproductive plants. Nevertheless, genetic diversity, inbreeding coefficients and fine‐scale spatial genetic structure were similar across populations, despite differences in gene dispersal. This result may indicate that the opposing processes of longer dispersal events in low‐density populations vs. higher diversity of contributing parents in high‐density populations balance the resulting genetic outcomes and prevent genetic erosion in small populations and fragments.  相似文献

Summary Some perennial fugitive plants that colonize badger disturbances in xeric prairies have a limited dispersal capacity, and consequently propagules are dispersed over a small area. I hypothesized that high density-dependent mortality might occur early in the life history of such species, and thus increased survival might occur in subsequent age classes because intraspecific competition would be reduced. These hypotheses were tested using natural and experimental cohorts of Mirabilis hirsuta (Pursh) MacM. From these data and field observations, inferences were obtained concerning selective forces operating upon life history characteristics of this species.The distance between individuals of M. hirsuta increases in successive age classes; the greatest decrease in density occurs between the propagule and seedling age classes. Mortality of propagules due to predation by ants and mice was density-dependent. Predation rates were highest at high propagule densities and predation upon propagules located on badger disturbances was higher than the mortality of propagules at similar densities in undisturbed prairie. The results of mortality in the propagule age class are seedlings present only at low densities and located away from parent plants. Seedlings survive to maturity only if they are located on badger disturbances; this species apparently can not successfully compete with plants present in undistrubed prairie. On badger disturbances seedlings present at low densities have much higher survival (roughly 50%) to maturity than do seedlings present at high densities (essentially zero). Thus, if high densities of propagules occur on a disturbance, predation upon propagules results, indirectly, in increased survival of seedlings to maturity. Such predation potentially could have important effects upon interspecific competition of M. hirsuta with other fugitives also colonizing badger disturbances.Reproductive success of M. hirsuta on the Cayler Prairie Preserve is contingent upon successful colonization of disturbance sites. It would appear that selection has operated upon the life history characteristics to favor both successful immigration onto new sites and establishment of seedlings on those sites. Relatively few, but large propagules are produced annually over a long adult life span. While large propagules enhance seedling establishment on xeric sites, production of few propagules annually for a number of years increases the likelihood of immigration onto sites that are variable in the time of appearance within the dispersal range of the plant.  相似文献

Interactions of Pythium oligandrum and four plant‐pathogenic Pythium spp. (P. ultimum, P. vexans, P. graminicola and P. aphanidermatum,) were studied in vitro by (i) video microscopy of hyphal interactions on water agar films, (ii) counting of host and mycoparasite propagules in different regions of opposing colonies on sunflower‐seed extract agar films and (Hi) ability of P. oligandrum to overgrow plates of potato‐dextrose agar previously colonized by Pythium spp. Pythium oligandrum typically coiled round the hyphae of Pythium hosts and penetrated the host hyphae after approximately 50 min from the hyphal coils, causing disruption of host hyphal tips up to 1.2 mm ahead of contact points. The relative growth rates of mycoparasite and host hyphae, timing of penetration and distance (sub‐apical) at which penetration led to host tip disruption were used to assess the potential of mycoparasitism by P. oligandrum to prevent the growth of Pythium hosts. P. aphanidermatum was unique among the ‘host’ Pythium spp. in being largely unaffected by P. oligandrum and in antagonizing the mycoparasite by coiling and penetrating the mycoparasite hyphae. Other host Pythium spp. apparently differed in susceptibility, the most susceptible being P. vexans and P. ultimum, whereas P. graminicola was more resistant. The results are discussed in relation to the role of P. oligandrum as a biocontrol agent, especially for limiting the ability of other Pythium spp. to increase their propagule populations in crop residues.  相似文献

森林景观是区域整体景观的重要组成部分,研究其空间分布格局对于优化区域景观整体结构和发挥生态经济效益具有重要意义。基于庐山2010年植被斑块数据,将森林景观划分为常绿阔叶林、落叶阔叶林、松类、杉类和竹类等5类景观,从森林景观的不同发育阶段和林分类型角度出发,运用点格局分析法分析5类森林景观空间分布格局特征。最邻近距离分析表明:5类森林景观空间分布类型均服从集聚分布但聚集强弱有变化;不同发育阶段的森林景观空间分布类型以集聚分布为主,随机分布为辅,尤其幼龄林比较显著,中龄林和老龄林次之;5类森林景观的天然林均服从集聚分布,人工林大多趋于随机分布,只有松类和杉类呈显著集聚分布。Ripley's K函数揭示了不同发育阶段和林分类型的森林景观的多尺度集聚特征,即在小尺度范围内服从随机分布,随着空间距离的增大,以空间特征尺度为分界线,空间聚集强度先逐渐增强,随后不断减弱。总体来看,庐山森林景观的发育阶段主要处于幼年时期,原始植被遭到人类大肆破坏,幼龄林大片分布,属于典型的恢复性植被,未来要重点保护好天然林,减少人为干扰,实现森林景观适度集聚。研究庐山森林景观的空间分布和多尺度特征可以为生态环境保护和实现森林可持续经营提供理论指导。  相似文献

植物种群空间分布格局是多种生态过程综合作用的结果。明确植物优势种群个体的空间分布格局与形成机制有助于认识种群生态适应对策与群落多样性维持机制。以宁夏荒漠草原优势种群蒙古冰草、短花针茅、牛枝子和牛心朴子为研究对象,采用完全空间随机零模型分析其种群空间分布格局特征,并通过异质泊松零模型与泊松聚块零模型探讨生境异质性、扩散限制等因子在其空间分布格局形成过程中的作用。结果显示:(1)完全空间随机零模型下,4个物种在4 m尺度范围内表现为聚集分布,随尺度增大,逐渐过渡到随机分布和均匀分布。(2)在排除生境异质性的异质泊松零模型下,蒙古冰草种群在整个研究尺度上表现为随机分布;牛枝子、短花针茅和牛心朴子种群仅分别在0—0.2、0.1—0.4 m与0—0.2 m尺度范围内发生偏离,表现为均匀分布与聚集分布,其他尺度均为随机分布。(3)在排除扩散限制的泊松聚块零模型下,所研究种群均表现为随机分布。综上,荒漠草原优势种群在小尺度范围内主要表现为聚集分布;生境异质性与扩散限制均是驱动其空间分布格局形成的重要因子,相对而言,小尺度空间范围内扩散限制的作用更为显著。  相似文献

红松属小兴安岭地区地带性植被优势种,该地区也是其分布的北缘。在景观尺度上开展红松的分布格局研究有利于进一步了解红松分布机理、未来迁移过程等问题,对其经营和保护有重要意义。将景观指数法与点格局分析法结合,设定8个空间尺度,利用红松存在/不存在数据,通过计算各空间尺度上红松聚集程度和景观指数,分析小兴安岭地区红松种群在多尺度上的分布格局。研究结果表明,小尺度上红松聚集分布明显,随机分布区多处于其聚集分布区的边缘,均匀分布区则散布在其聚集分布区内。景观指数研究表明,通过景观指数可判断红松聚集分布格局趋势,而不能判断均匀分布、随机分布格局趋势,因为它们在多尺度下景观指数波动大,不能用景观指数来描述分布格局。研究得出如下结论:1)红松主要分布在其分布区的核心区域内,在分布区边缘和过渡带上呈随机分布,2)存在/不存在数据能够用来分析种群的多尺度空间分布格局,3)空间尺度的变化会引起树种分布格局的变化,随机分布随尺度增加,边缘化程度加强,4)单一尺度上,景观格局指数不能完全描述种群分布格局;而在多尺度上,变化趋势稳定的景观指数表明聚集分布存在,而波动剧烈的景观指数常与随机分布和均匀分布联系在一起,5)地形因子中,红松对坡度和海拔两个因子变化敏感。  相似文献

Plant migration is a multi-stage process often driven by multiple dispersal vector systems. Water-mediated dispersal (hydrochory) is known to move propagules of nonaquatic species over long distances, but whether propagule morphology affects floating processes is an open question. We used a multi-species approach to assess the role of propagule morphology in the dispersal of primarily wind-dispersed tree species in different urban rivers; the impact of hydraulic structures (locks, spillways) on floating was also considered. We released tagged propagules of eight tree species (Acer platanoides, Acer negundo, Acer saccharinum, Ailanthus altissima, Fraxinus excelsior, Robinia pseudoacacia, Tilia platyphyllos, Ulmus glabra) in the main lowland Spree River and in the small tributary Panke River (Berlin, Germany) and directly observed the fate of the floating propagules over river sections of 1,200 m. Our results demonstrate the following: (1) Water is an effective dispersal agent for wind-dispersed tree species, extending typical wind-related transport distances by several times. (2) Interspecific differences in transport distances reflect propagule characteristics (dry weight, maximum wing width) and river system. (3) Propagule morphology also affects deposition patterns as it was generally the large propagules that were trapped along semi-natural embankments in slow flow areas. (4) Hydraulic structures hampered but did not entirely stop water-mediated dispersal and diminished the effects of propagule morphology on floating processes.
