RFamide-related peptides (RFRPs) are orthologous to gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) inhibiting gonadotropin release. There are only two RFRP sequences (RFRP-1 and RFRP-3) encoded in rodents. RFRP-3, which was considered as a hypothetical inhibitor on GnRH, shows a stimulatory effect on the male Syrian and male Siberian hamster in short days. As a dominant rodent pest in northern China farmland, the striped hamster (Cricetulus barabensis) has higher reproductive activities and could act as a model to study the mechanism of reproduction. However, the effect of RFRP-3 on the reproductive activity for the striped hamster is less understood. In the study, we cloned 643 bp RFRP cDNA from the striped hamster hypothalamus, which contained an ORF of 570 bp encoding two RFamide-related peptide (RFRP) sequences: SPAPANKVPHSAANLPLRF-NH2 (C. barabensis RFRP-1) and TLSRVPSLPQRF-NH2 (C. barabensis RFRP-3). We also investigated the expression variation of RFRP mRNA and GnRH mRNA in the hypothalamus from hamsters with different developmental statuses (7-week-, 13-week- and 1.5-year-olds) using FQ-PCR, in which the 13-week-old female individuals were in estrous. The striped hamsters that are 7 weeks and 1.5 years old are non-breeding individuals, and those that are 13-week hamsters have breeding phenomena. The highest hypothalamus RFRP mRNA level was found in breeding males as compared to non-breeding males. Conversely, the lowest RFRP mRNA level in the hypothalamus was observed in breeding females, with no significant level when the breeding females were compared to the 7-week-old individuals. Additionally, the investigation of GnRH expression level showed a declining expression trend across the developmental stages (7-week-, 13-week- and 1.5-year-olds) in both sexes. Significant negative and positive relationships were detected in the 13-week estrous female (r = − 0.997, P = 0.035) and the 13-week male (r = 0.998, P = 0.029) striped hamsters respectively, which suggest that RFRP-3 has inhibitory and stimulatory effects on female and male adults respectively. Our results suggest that the effects of RFRP-3 on reproduction are sex- and developmental status-dependent in the striped hamster.

Birds exposed to seasonal environments are faced with the problem of maintaining thermogenic homoeostasis. Previous studies have established that birds native to the Holarctic increase their Resting Metabolic Rate at different ambient temperatures (RMRTa) and Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) in winter as an adaptation to cold temperature since winters are more severe, while their non-Holarctic counterparts generally decrease their winter BMR as an energy saving mechanism during unproductive and dry winter months. In this study, we examined seasonal thermoregulation in the burrowing parrot (Cyanoliseus patagonus), a colonial psittacine native to the Patagonian region of Argentina, a region with an unpredictable environment. We found significantly higher mass specific RMRTa and BMR in summer than in winter. Both summer and winter BMR of the species fell within the predicted 95% confident interval for a parrot of its size. Body mass was significantly higher in winter than in summer. The burrowing parrot had broad thermo-neutral zones in winter and summer. The circadian rhythm of core body temperature (Tb) of burrowing parrots was not affected by season, showing that this species regulated its Tb irrespective of season. These results suggest that the burrowing parrots' seasonal thermoregulatory responses represent that of energy conservation which is important in an unpredictable environment.

The Hogsback (32°33S 26°57E) and Alice (32°47S 26°50E), Eastern Cape, South Africa, are separated by only 24 km but by 1000 m in altitude and fall into different climatic regions. Thermal responses (energy expenditure and body temperature) to ambient temperature were measured in a population of vlei rats (Otomys irroratus) from each of the two localities. We predicted that animals from the colder Hogsback would show differences in their thermal physiology and morphology consistent with better cold-resistance. Basal metabolic rates of the Hogsback population were slightly, but not significantly, higher than the Alice population (23.9 J g−1 h−1 vs 22.3 J g−1 h−1), but the slope of the regression between energy expenditure and ambient temperature below the thermal neutral zone was significantly lower (−1.28 vs −1.60). Body temperature, although quite variable in both populations, was not significantly influenced by ambient temperature in the Hogsback population, whereas that of Alice animals was. Fur length was longer and relative size of the ears and tail was smaller in the Hogsback population, which probably accounted for the slightly lower minimum thermal conductance (1.79 J g−1 h−1 °C−1 vs 1.91 J g−1 h−1 °C−1) in the Hogsback population. Vlei rats from the two sites also have different karyotypes that correlate with climate but there is insufficient evidence at present to suggest that the different karyotypes and the physiological parameters measured are adaptive. Invasive species are a major threat to global biodiversity. Rose-ringed parakeets Psittacula krameri are widely established outside their native range and are successful invaders in many countries, including South Africa. Physiological and behavioral responses to environmental conditions are considered to be major factors that influence the abundance and distribution of birds. As rose-ringed parakeets are able to tolerate wide varieties of climatic conditions as invaders, it is important to understand their physiological responses to these. This study examined the effects of seasonal changes in ambient temperatures (Ta) on metabolic rate and body temperature (Tb) of captive-bred rose-ringed parakeets. Resting metabolic rate at various Ta and basal metabolic rate were significantly lower in winter compared to summer, and the thermo-neutral zone was broader in winter than in summer. There was no significant difference in body mass (Mb) between seasons. These parakeets showed seasonal thermoregulatory responses that represented energy conservation as expected, rather than cold tolerance. They were relatively tolerant of low Ta and showed no hypothermia at 5 °C. Our results suggest that this species is physiologically and behaviorally equipped to cope with a range of climatic situations and this partly explains their global success as an invader species.

Proper adjustment of thermoregulatory mechanisms ensures the survival of mammals when they are subjected to seasonal changes in their natural environment. To understand the physiological and ecological adaptations of Eothenomys olitor, we measured their metabolic rate, thermal conductance, body temperature (Tb) and evaporative water loss at a temperature range of 5–30 °C in summer. The thermal neutral zone (TNZ) of E. olitor was 20–27.5 °C, and the mean body temperature was 35.81±0.15 °C. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) was 2.81±0.11 ml O2/g h and mean minimum thermal conductance (Cm) was 0.18±0.01 ml O2/g h °C. Evaporative water loss (EWL) in E. olitor increased when the ambient temperature increased. The maximal evaporative water loss was 6.74±0.19 mg H2O/g h at 30 °C. These results indicated that E. olitor have relatively high BMR, low body temperature, low lower critical temperature, and normal thermal conductance. EWL plays an inportant role in temperature regulation. These characteristics are closely related to the living habitat of the species, and represent its adaptive strategy to the climate of the Yunnan-Kweichow Plateau, a low-latitude, high-altitude region where annual temperature fluctuations are small, but daily temperature fluctuations are greater.

The development of thermoregulation was studied in turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo, 60.5 g) and guinea fowl (Numida meleagris, 33.5 g) from 2 to 24 h after hatching. Thermoregulation was measured at different ages during 1 h of cold exposure (20°C). Final body temperature rose linearly with age in turkeys, but reached a plateau in guinea fowl between 12 and 16 h. At 2 h after hatch final body temperature was highest in guinea fowl, while at 24 h after hatch there was no difference between the species. The development of mass-specific metabolic rate with age resembled the pattern of final body temperature. At 2 h post-hatch mass-specific metabolic rate was highest in guinea fowl; however, at 24 h post-hatch there was no difference between the species. since mass-specific metabolic rate reached a plateau in guinea fowl at 16 h. In turkeys mass-specific dry thermal conductance decreased with age initially, while in guinea fowl it remained stable. Nevertheless, at both 2 and 24 h after hatch mass-specific wet conductance did not differ significantly between the species. In turkeys mass-specific wet conductance increased initially. This increase in mass-specific wet conductance may be due to the rapid onset of feather growth in turkeys. The O2 consumption per breath doubled during the first 24 h in turkeys but remained stable in guine fowl. This suggests that at least two different developmental patterns of O2 intake exist within Galliformes. The results show that 2 h post-hatch the thermoregulatory ability was lowest in turkeys, despite their larger body mass. However, at 24 h post-hatch the difference between the species was not significant, because the thermoregulatory ability had increased more in turkeys.Abbreviations Bf breathing frequency - BM body mass - BMR basal metabolic rate - CD mass-specific dry thermal conductance - Cw mass-specific wet thermal conductance - HI homeothermy index - HE evaporative heat loss - HB loss of stored body heat - MR metabolic rate - MMS mass-specific metabolic rate - RH relative humidity - IA ambient temperature - TBi initial body temperature - TBf final body temperature - VO2 volume oxygen consumed - VCO2 volume carbon dioxide produced

A total of 14 polymorphic microsatellite markers were isolated and characterized from the striped hamster, Cricetulus barabensis, a widespread rodent pest in northern China. Two to six alleles per locus were detected in 90 individuals from three locations in Shandong Province, China. The observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.21 to 0.78 and from 0.30 to 0.80, respectively. These microsatellite markers provide new tools for investigating the population structure of this species.

For subterranean rodents, searching for food by extension of the tunnel system and maintenance of body temperature are two of the most important factors affecting their life underground. In this study we assess the effect of ambient temperature on energetics and thermoregulation during digging in Ctenomys talarum. We measured V˙o2 during digging and resting at ambient temperature (Ta) below, within, and above thermoneutrality. Digging metabolic rate was lowest at Ta within the thermoneutral zone and increased at both lower and higher temperatures, but body temperature (Tb) remained constant at all Tas. Below thermoneutrality, the cost of digging and thermoregulation are additive. Heat production for thermoregulation would be compensated by heat produced as a by-product of muscular activity during digging. Above thermoneutrality, conduction would be an important mechanism to maintain a constant Tb during digging.

We examined the thermoregulatory behaviour (TRB) of roosting Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) in north central Chile during summer and winter, when ambient temperatures (Ta) are most extreme. Each body posture was considered to represent a particular TRB, which was ranked in a sequence that reflected different degrees of thermal load and was assigned an arbitrary thermoregulatory score. During summer, birds exhibited eight different TRBs, mainly oriented to heat dissipation, and experienced a wide range of Ta (from 14 to 31°C), occasionally above their thermoneutral zone (TNZ, from 2 to 30°C), this being evident by observations of extreme thermoregulatory responses such as panting. In winter, birds exhibited only three TRBs, mainly oriented to heat retention, and experienced a smaller range of Ta (from 11 to 18°C), always within the TNZ, even at night. The components of behavioural responses increased directly with the heat load which explains the broader behavioural repertoire observed in summer. Since penguins are primarily adapted in morphology and physiology to cope with low water temperatures, our results suggest that behavioural thermoregulation may be important in the maintenance of the thermal balance in Humboldt penguins while on land.

Acclimatization to winter conditions is an essential prerequisite for survival of small passerines of the northern temperate zone. Changes in photoperiod, ambient temperature and food availability trigger seasonal acclimatization in physiology and behavior of many birds. In the present study, seasonal adjustments in several physiological, hormonal, and biochemical markers were examined in wild-captured Eurasian tree sparrows (Passer montanus) from the Heilongjiang Province in China. In winter sparrows had higher body mass and basal metabolic rate (BMR). Consistently, the dry mass of liver, heart, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine and total digestive tract were higher in winter than in that in summer. The contents of mitochondrial protein in liver, and state-4 respiration and cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity in liver and muscle increased significantly in winter. Circulating level of serum triiodothyronine (T3) was significantly higher in winter than in summer. Together, these data suggest that tree sparrows mainly coped with cold by enhancing thermogenic capacities through increased organ masses and heightened activity of respiratory enzymes activities. The results support the view that prominent winter increases in BMR are manifestations of winter acclimatization in tree sparrows and that seasonal variation in metabolism in sparrows is similar to that in other small temperate-wintering birds.

Studies on the behaviour of the common hamster are very rare and fragmentary. From August till the middle of September 2005 we observed behaviour of six individuals of the common hamster (one female and five juveniles: three males and two females) and from the second part of September till October 2005 we observed behaviour of two juvenile males after they were separated from the group. The “Focal animal sampling” was used as an observation method, and the total time of observation amounted to 75 hours. During our observation 7707 bouts of behaviour were recorded. Both social and non-social behaviour were categorised. The number of the non-social behaviour prevailed significantly over the number of the social behaviour (n=496; 6.4%). The most frequent observed non-social behaviour was: head rearing (n=2019; 28%). Among interindividual interactions “escape” (45.4%; n=225) and “vocalisation” (15.7%; n=78) were noticed most frequently. Play-fighting, direct identification, following and hugging were the only aspects of the social behaviour characteristic of the young. The behaviour repertoire of the common hamster seems to be similar to the behaviour of the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus).

Mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) are the main bivalves cultured in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Thermaikos gulf North of Greece. Global warming might affect these cultures since increases in the sea temperatures especially during summertime and may cause mass mortalities. Thus projections of the effects of global warming and the knowledge of the mechanisms of thermal limitation and adaptation are considered important in this context. In the present work we studied the seasonal expression of Hsp70 and Hsp90 of aquacultured mussels in nature in an effort to examine whether mussels are seasonally thermally stressed. Moreover we determined the activity of the key glycolytic enzyme PK in order to examine seasonal changes in the metabolic profile. The present data showed a biphasic seasonal pattern in the expression of Hsps in the mantle and PAM of M. galloprovincialis. The expression of inducible Hsp72 and Hsp90 increased between February and mid April, and remained constant or decreased slightly by the end of May. Hsps expression started again in early June leading to a gradual increase by mid July and remained by the end of August. The pattern of the HSR indicates increased protein turnover or protein damage in the tissues of aquacultured M. galloprovincialis between winter and summer seasons. The induction temperature is probably limited, and beyond some upper limits there is no further change in the HSR induction temperatures and the HSR sets in. PK activity in the mantle was significantly higher in winter than in spring. Early May saw a reactivation of PK to higher than spring values. Similar to mantle PK, PK activity in PAM was significantly higher in winter than in spring. A slight reactivation was observed by the end of August.

We examined the contributions of alterations in daily activity and behavioral selection of microhabitat to thermoregulation in a population of the lizard, Ameiva exsul (Teiidae), by combining data on lizard activity with data on the availability of sun-shade patches and operative temperatures (Te). By comparing Te distributions predicted by “no thermoregulation” and “only thermoregulation” hypotheses to those predicted by random use of thermal habitat, we assessed the relative contributions of microhabitat selection and daily activity to regulation of body temperature (Tb). Over the course of a day lizards maintained Tb very close to optimal temperature (Tsel) despite Tes that deviated substantially from Tsel. Data demonstrating a unimodal daily activity pattern reject the hypothesis of uniform activity throughout the day. Also, lizard activity was not positively correlated with the proportion of Tes within Tsel nor negatively correlated with the absolute deviation of available Te from Tsel (de) (“only thermoregulation”). Microsite use by A. exsul deviated significantly from predictions of the “no thermoregulation” hypothesis, but our data could not reject predictions of the “only thermoregulation” hypothesis that lizards would use sun-shade patches relative to the proportion of microsites where Te is within Tsel. Also, lizards appeared to actively select sunlit and partially shaded microsites at different times of day. Thus, despite thermal constraints imposed by the habitat, A. exsul maintained high and relatively constant Tbs throughout its daily activity period and thermoregulated effectively. This appears to be generally representative of West Indian species of Ameiva.

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) of birds is beginning to be viewed as a highly flexible physiological trait influenced by environmental fluctuations, and in particular changes in ambient temperatures (Ta). Southern Africa is characterized by an unpredictable environment with daily and seasonal variation. This study sought to evaluate the effects of seasonal changes in Ta on mass-specific resting metabolic rate (RMR), BMR and body temperature (Tb) of Red-winged Starlings (Onychognathus morio). They have a broad distribution, from Ethiopia to the Cape in South Africa and are medium-sized frugivorous birds. Metabolic rate (VO2) and Tb were measured in wild caught Red-winged Starlings after a period of summer and winter acclimatization in outdoor aviaries. RMR and BMR were significantly higher in winter than summer. Body mass of Starlings was significantly higher in winter compared with summer. The increased RMR and BMR in winter indicate improved ability to cope with cold and maintenance of a high Tb. These results show that the metabolism of Red-winged Starlings are not constant, but exhibit a pronounced seasonal phenotypic flexibility with maintenance of a high Tb.
