This study had the following objectives: (i) to evaluate the thermoregulatory and behavioral responses of light laying hens supplemented with different types and dosages of phytases in the two day shifts; and (ii) to integrate the thermoregulatory and behavioral responses with performance of these birds raised in a hot environment. 270 light laying hens of the Hy-Line White lineage, with a body weight of 1.60 ± 0.092 kg were distributed in a completely randomized design in a 2 × 2 + 1 factorial model with two types of phytases (bacterial and fungal) and two dosages (450 and 900 FTU), and a control diet. The day shift (morning and afternoon) was considered as a fixed effect in the factorial arrangement. Principal component analysis (PCA), correspondence analysis (CA) and canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) were used. There was no interaction (P > 0.05) between phytases and dosages for thermoregulatory responses. Respiratory rate (RR), cloacal temperature (CT), and surface temperature with feathers (STWF) and featherless (STF) were higher (P < 0.001) in the afternoon. Birds show different thermoregulatory and behavioral responses in the two shifts of the day. We also observed that birds supplemented with bacterial and fungal phytase showed similar thermoregulatory and behavioral responses to the control group in both day shifts. Expression of the “eating” activity was greater in the morning, while the birds remained sitting longer in the afternoon. Egg production was higher (P < 0.001) in birds supplemented with bacterial phytase. The phytase dosages had no effect on thermoregulatory, behavioral or performance responses. Egg production, feed conversion per dozen eggs corresponded to 81.1% of the differences between bacterial and fungal phytase supplementation and group control. Thus, we conclude that: (i) phytase dietary supplementation has no effect on the thermoregulatory responses of laying hens reared in a hot environment; (ii) birds supplemented with bacterial phytase showed higher egg production; and (iii) phytases (450 and 900 FTU) do not interfere with productive, behavioral and thermoregulatory responses.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in ambient temperature (Ta) require changes in thermoregulatory responses of endotherms. These responses vary according to several factors including taxon and energy constraints. Despite a plethora of studies on chiropteran variations in thermoregulation, few have examined African species. In this study, we used the Wahlberg's epauletted fruit bat (Epomophorus wahlbergi, body mass≈115 g) to determine how the thermoregulatory abilities of an Afrotropical chiropteran respond to seasonal changes in Ta. Mass specific Resting Metabolic Rates (RMRTa) and basal metabolic rate (BMR) were significantly higher in winter than in summer. Furthermore, winter body mass was significantly higher than summer body mass. A broad thermoneutral zone (TNZ) was observed in winter (15–35 °C) compared with summer (25–30 °C). This species exhibited heterothermy (rectal and core body temperature) during the photophase (bats' rest-phase) particularly at lower Tas and had a low tolerance of high Tas. Overall, there was a significant seasonal variation in the thermoregulatory abilities of E. wahlbergi. The relative paucity of data relating to the seasonal thermoregulatory abilities of Afrotropical bats suggest further work is needed for comparison and possible effects of climate change, particularly extreme hot days.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate the effects of heat acclimatisation on thermoregulatory responses and work tolerance in trained individuals residing in the tropics. Eighteen male trained soldiers, who are native to a warm and humid climate, performed a total of four heat stress tests donning the Skeletal Battle Order (SBO, 20.5 kg) and Full Battle Order (FBO, 24.7 kg) before (PRE) and after (POST) a 10-day heat acclimatisation programme. The trials were conducted in an environmental chamber (dry bulb temperature: 32 °C, relative humidity: 70%, solar radiation: 400 W/m2). Excluding the data sets of which participants fully completed the heat stress tests (210 min) before and after heat acclimatisation, work tolerance was improved from 173±30 to 201±18 min (∼21%, p<0.05, n=9) following heat acclimatisation. Following heat acclimatisation, chest skin temperature during exercise was lowered in SBO (PRE=36.7±0.3 vs. POST=36.5±0.3 °C, p<0.01) and FBO (PRE=36.8±0.4 vs. POST=36.6±0.3 °C, p<0.01). Ratings of perceived exertion were decreased with SBO and FBO (PRE=11±2; POST=10±2; p<0.05) after heat acclimatisation. Heat acclimatisation had no effects on baseline body core temperature, heart rate and sweat rate across trials (p>0.05). A heat acclimatisation programme improves work tolerance with minimal effects on thermoregulation in trained tropical natives.  相似文献

The use of thermoregulatory models for assessing physiological responses of workers in thermally stressful situations has been increasing because of the risks and costs related to human studies. In a previous study (Yokota et al. Eur J Appl Physiol 104:297–302, 2008), the effects of anthropometric variability on predicted physiological responses to heat stress in U.S. Army male soldiers were evaluated. Five somatotypes were identified in U.S. Army male multivariate anthropometric distribution. The simulated heat responses, using a thermoregulatory model, were different between somatotypes. The present study further extends this line of research to female soldiers. Anthropometric somatotypes were identified using multivariate analysis [height, weight, percent body fat (%BF)] and the predicted physiological responses to simulated exercise and heat stress using a thermoregulatory model were evaluated. The simulated conditions included walking at ~3 mph (4.8 km/h) for 300 min and wearing battle dress uniform and body armor in a 30°C, 25% relative humidity (RH) environment without solar radiation. Five major somatotypes (tall-fat, tall-lean, average, short-lean, and short-fat), identified through multivariate analysis of anthropometric distributions, showed different tolerance levels to simulated heat stress: lean women were predicted to maintain their core temperatures (Tc) lower than short-fat or tall-fat women. The measured Tc of female subjects obtained from two heat studies (data1: 30°C, 32% RH, protective garments, ~225 w·m−2 walk for 90 min; data2: 32°C, 75% RH, hot weather battle dress uniform, ~378 ± 32 w·m−2 for 30 min walk/30 min rest cycles for 120 min) were utilized for validation. Validation results agreed with the findings in this study: fat subjects tended to have higher core temperatures than medium individuals (data2) and lean subjects maintained lower core temperatures than medium subjects (data1).  相似文献

Rising environmental temperatures have become a global threat for ectotherms, with the increasing risk of overheating promoting population declines. Flexible thermoregulatory behavior might be a plausible mechanism to mitigate the effects of extreme temperatures. We experimentally evaluated thermoregulatory behavior in the bunchgrass lizard, Sceloporus aeneus, at three different environmental temperatures (25, 35 and 45 °C) both with and without a thermal refuge. We recorded themoregulatory behaviors (body posture and movement between hot and cold patches) and compared individual lizards across all experimental temperature and shelter combinations. Behavioral thermoregulation in S. aeneus was characterized by the expression of five body postures, whose frequencies varied based on environmental temperature and microthermal conditions. Behavioral responses allowed lizards to maintain a mean body temperature <40 °C, the critical thermal maximum for temperate species, even at extreme environmental temperatures (45 °C). Although S. aeneus express an array of behavioral postures that provide an effective mechanism to cope with elevating temperatures, the presence of a thermal refuge was important to better achieve this. Together, our study offers a novel method to evaluate microhabitat preference that encompasses both behavioral observations and time-space analysis based on the ambient thermal distribution, a consideration that can aid in the formulation of more accurate predictions on ectotherm vulnerability related to increasing global environmental temperatures.  相似文献

PurposeBody surface area (BSA) is an important measurement for many thermophysiological, pharmaceutical, toxicological, environmental, and military applications. Unfortunately, BSA is difficult to quantify, and existing prediction methods are not optimized for contemporary populations.MethodsThe present study analyzed data body measurements from 5603 male and female participants of a US Army Anthropometric Survey to determine optimal methods for estimating BSA in modern US Army Soldiers. This data included 94 individual body measurements as well as three dimensional (3D) whole body scans for each participant. We used this data to assess and compared 15 existing equations to the measured data. We also derived best fitting nonlinear regression models for estimating BSA from different combinations of sex, height, and weight and iteratively included the remaining 91 measurements to determine which combinations resulted in the highest goodness-of-fit.ResultsWe found that inclusion of armspan measurements as a third body dimension maximized the model goodness-of-fit.ConclusionSome of the existing formulae provide reasonable estimates of 3D-scanner derived BSA; while our new formulae derived from this study allows for more accurate estimates of BSA using one or more common input variables.  相似文献

The body recognition process includes complex visual processing, the sensation, perception, and distinction stages of the stimulus. This study examined this process by using the time–frequency analysis of EEG signals and analyzed the obtained data by using the event-related oscillations method. This study aimed to examine the oscillatory brain responses and distinguish one’s own body from other’s body. In the present study, 17 young adults were included and the EEGs were recorded with 32 electrodes placed in different locations. Event-related power spectrum and phase-locking analyzes were performed. ITC and ERSP data were analyzed using 2 (condition) × 11 (location) × 2 (hemisphere) ANOVA Design. As we observed a prolonged response in the theta band in the grand averages, we included the time variable in the overall model. As a result, we found that the phase-locking and the event-related power spectrum of the theta response in recognizing one’s own body were higher when compared to the phase-locking and the event-related power spectrum of the theta response in recognizing others’ body (p < 0.05). When the time variable was included, the early theta response was more phase-locked and had a higher power spectrum compared to the late theta response (p < 0.05). As a result of the power spectrum analysis, the condition × hemisphere interaction effect in the beta band was higher in the left hemisphere regarding increased responses in recognizing one’s own body (p < 0.05). As a result of ITC, the main effect of the condition was higher in the recognition of the stimulus of one’s own body (p < 0.05). Finally, the theta oscillator response stood out in distinguishing one’s own body from other’s body. Similarly, the power spectrum in the beta response was higher in the left hemisphere, and this finding is consistent with the literature.  相似文献

Seasonal thermoregulatory responses that are associated with cold tolerance have been reported for many species that inhabit regions where winters are severe (e.g. Holarctic), but relatively few studies have focused on species from regions where the climate is more unpredictable (e.g. Southern Africa). In this study, metabolic rate (VO2) and body temperature (Tb) was measured during summer and winter in captive Southern White-faced Scops-owl (Ptilopsis granti), to test for thermoregulatory responses representing energy conservation in winter. During winter the Southern White-faced Scops-owls increased resting metabolic rate (RMR) by 45% to regulate a set point Tb—a result similar to what had been shown in small passerines from the Holarctic region. Increased RMR and increased conductance at cold Ta's are suggestive of improved cold tolerance. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) was 0.60 mL O2 g−1 h−1 and showed no seasonal flexibility. Thus, contrary to expectation, the Southern White-faced Scops-owls showed seasonal thermoregulatory responses that are unlikely to represent energy conservation which was expected for a medium-sized bird inhabiting unpredictable climates in Southern Africa.  相似文献

IntroductionThis study assessed the influence of High (H, 4.13%), Medium (M, 2.0%) and Low (L, 0.1%) doses of menthol on temperature perception and regulation, compared to a Placebo Condition (P).MethodSixteen participants underwent the aforementioned conditions on four separate days. During each test participants rested supine (Environmental conditions: 30 °C, 50% rh) for 30-min before 40 mL of L, M, H or P gel was applied to the anterior upper body, then rested 30-min thereafter. Primary measures included thermal sensation (TS), thermal comfort (TC), irritation (IRR), rectal temperature (Tre), and skin temperature (chest, forearm, thigh, calf), and EMG (trapezius, pectoralis major, sternocleidomastoid). The area under the curve (AUC) from minute 30 to 60 was compared between conditions using relevant non/parametric tests (alpha level = 0.05).ResultsA cooling trend in Tre was observed following Placebo gel application, but this significantly (p < 0.05) reversed into a heat storage response in M and H. Both TS and TC significantly differed by condition (p < 0.001) in a dose-dependent manner, with L, M, and H doses eliciting significantly cooler sensations and more discomfort than P (p < 0.05). Irritation significantly differed by condition (p < 0.01) in a dose-dependent manner, with L and M eliciting significantly greater irritation than P (p < 0.01). No other differences were observed.ConclusionsMenthol exerts perceptual and thermoregulatory effects independent of skin temperature. A menthol dose-dependent perceptual cooling effect was evident with possible saturation at the moderate dose. A dose-dependent alteration in deep body temperature was also evident.  相似文献

Downhill walking presents a greater risk of falling as a result of slipping or loss of balance in comparison with level walking. The current study aimed to investigate the effects of inclination angles on the intra-limb (inter-joint) and inter-limb sharing of the body support during downhill walking for a better understanding of the associated control strategy. Fifteen young male adults (age: 32.6±5.2 years, height: 168.9±5.5 cm, mass: 68.4±8.7 kg) performed level and downhill walking while their kinematic and kinetic data were measured for calculating joint moments and total support moments of the lower limbs using inverse dynamics analysis. The peak total support moments of both the leading and trailing limbs increased with increasing inclination angles (p<0.05) with different sharing patterns among individual joints. Being the major contributor to the peak total support moment during early single-limb support, the contribution of the knee remained unaltered (p>0.05), but the contributions of the hip increased with reduced contributions from the ankle (p<0.05). For the increased peak total support moment during late single-limb support, the intra-limb sharing changed from a major ankle contribution to a major knee contribution strategy. The hip contribution was also increased (p<0.05) but the hip flexor moment remained unaltered (p>0.05). During double-limb support, the main contributor to the whole body support changed from the trailing limb to the leading limb with increasing inclination angles (p<0.05).  相似文献

While different studies showed that better fitness level adds to the efficiency of the thermoregulatory system, the relationship between muscular effort and skin temperature is still unknown. Therefore, the present study assessed the relationship between neuromuscular activation and skin temperature during cycle exercise. Ten physically active participants performed an incremental workload cycling test to exhaustion while neuromuscular activations were recorded (via surface electromyography – EMG) from rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, biceps femoris and gastrocnemius medialis. Thermographic images were recorded before, immediately after and 10 min after finishing the cycling test, at four body regions of interest corresponding to the muscles where neuromuscular activations were monitored. Frequency band analysis was conducted to assess spectral properties of EMG signals in order to infer on priority in recruitment of motor units. Significant inverse relationship between changes in skin temperature and changes in overall neuromuscular activation for vastus lateralis was observed (r<−0.5 and p<0.04). Significant positive relationship was observed between skin temperature and low frequency components of neuromuscular activation from vastus lateralis (r>0.7 and p<0.01). Participants with larger overall activation and reduced low frequency component for vastus lateralis activation presented a better adaptive response of their thermoregulatory system by showing fewer changes in skin temperature after incremental cycling test.  相似文献

Speculation exists whether dance provides physiological stimuli adequate to promote health and fitness benefits. Unfortunately, research to date has not addressed the affective and exertional responses to dance. These responses are of interest as positive affective and exertional responses experienced during physical activity may play an important role in predicting adherence. The present study aims to examine the psychophysiological responses of different Salsa dance styles. Ten pairs of dancers performed two different structured lessons of Salsa dance, including Typical Salsa and Rueda de Casino lessons, and a non-structured Salsa dance at a night club. Physiological responses (i.e., percent of heart rate reserve; %HRR) were continuously assessed and perceived exertion and affective valence were rated every 15 min throughout the trials. %HRR responses differed between the Salsa dance styles (%HRR from 41.3 to 51.9%), and participants were dancing at intensities near their ventilatory threshold. Specifically, Typical Salsa lesson elicited lower %HRR responses than Rueda de Casino lesson (p < 0.05), but similar %HRR responses to Salsa dance at a night club condition (p > 0.05). Surprisingly, exertional (from 8 to 11) and affective (from +3 to +5) responses were unaffected by Salsa dance styles (p > 0.05). These data support that different Salsa dance styles provide physiological stimuli adequate to promote health and fitness benefits, and perhaps more importantly, produce pleasurable experiences, which in turn might lead to an increase in adherence to Salsa dancing which likely provides exercise-like health benefits.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the relative effect of electrocardiography (ECG) on back muscle surface electromyography (SEMG) parameters and their corresponding sensitivity in low back pain (LBP) assessment.Back muscle SEMG activities were recorded from 17 healthy subjects and 18 chronic LBP patients under static postures (straight sitting and upright standing), and dynamic action (flexion–extension). ECG cancellation based on independent component analysis (ICA) method was performed. Root mean square (RMS) and median frequency (MF) of raw and denoised SEMG data were computed respectively. Multiple comparisons were then performed.A consistent trend of change (increased MF and decreased RMS) followed ECG removal was noticed. In particular, in SEMG measurements under static postures, a significant decrease in RMS (p < 0.05) and increase in MF (p < 0.05) were found in all recording muscle groups. Level of corruption by ECG artifacts on SEMG measurements was found to be more serious and prominent in static postures than that in dynamic action. After ECG removal, significant improvements in the ability of SEMG to discriminate LBP patients from healthy subjects were seen in RMS amplitude recorded while standing (p < 0.05) and MF in all measuring conditions (p < 0.05).This study provides a more complete understanding on the relative effect of ECG contamination on back muscles SEMG parameters and LBP assessment.  相似文献

Reproductive females manipulate offspring phenotypes by modifying conditions during embryogenesis. In ectotherms, the environmental control over embryogenesis is often realized by changes in maternal thermoregulation during gravidity. To determine if reproduction influences thermoregulatory behavior in species where females lay eggs shortly after fertilization (strict oviparity), we compared preferred body temperatures (Tp) between reproductive (egg-laying) and non-reproductive female newts, Ichthyosaura alpestris. Next, we exposed reproductive females to temperatures mimicking Tp ranges of reproductive and non-reproductive individuals to find out whether the maternally modified thermal regime influences ovum and jelly coat volume, and early cleavage rates at the time of oviposition. In the thermal gradient, reproductive females maintained their body temperatures within a narrower range than non-reproductive individuals. The exposure of ovipositing females to temperatures preferred during their reproductive and non-reproductive period had a negligible influence on egg size and early cleavage rates. We conclude that the modification of maternal thermoregulatory behavior provides a limited opportunity to manipulate egg traits in newts.  相似文献

Kawasaki disease (KD) is a systemic vasculitis primarily affecting children < 5 years old. Genes significantly associated with KD mostly involve cardiovascular, immune, and inflammatory responses. Recent studies have observed stronger associations for KD risk with multiple genes compared to individual genes. Therefore, we investigated whether gene combinations influenced KD susceptibility or coronary artery lesion (CAL) formation. We examined 384 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for 159 immune-related candidate genes in DNA samples from KD patients with CAL (n = 73), KD patients without CAL (n = 153), and cohort controls (n = 575). Individual SNPs were first assessed by univariate analysis (UVA) and multivariate analysis (MVA). We used multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) to examine individual SNPs in one-, two-, and three-locus best fit models. UVA identified 53 individual SNPs that were significantly associated with KD risk or CAL formation (p < 0.10), while 35 individual SNPs were significantly associated using MVA (p ≤ 0.05). Significant associations in MDR analysis were only observed for the two-locus models after permutation testing (p ≤ 0.05). In logistic regression, combined possession of PDE2A (rs341058) and CYFIP2 (rs767007) significantly increased KD susceptibility (OR = 3.54; p = 4.14 x 10−7), while combinations of LOC100133214 (rs2517892) and IL2RA (rs3118470) significantly increased the risk of CAL in KD patients (OR = 5.35; p = 7.46 x 10−5). Our results suggest varying gene-gene associations respectively predispose individuals to KD risk or its complications of CAL.  相似文献

We previously described a putative role for inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), a rate-limiting enzyme in de novo guanine nucleotide biosynthesis, in lipid accumulation. Here we present data which demonstrate that IMPDH activity is required for differentiation of preadipocytes into mature, lipid-laden adipocytes and maintenance of adipose tissue mass. In 3T3-L1 preadipocytes inhibition of IMPDH with mycophenolic acid (MPA) reduced intracellular GTP levels by 60% (p < 0.05) and blocked adipogenesis (p < 0.05). Co-treatment with guanosine, a substrate in the salvage pathway of nucleotide biosynthesis, restored GTP levels and adipogenesis demonstrating the specificity of these effects. Treatment of diet-induced obese mice with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), the prodrug of MPA, for 28 days did not affect food intake or lean body mass but reduced body fat content (by 36%, p = 0.002) and adipocyte size (p = 0.03) and number. These data suggest that inhibition of IMPDH may represent a novel strategy to reduce adipose tissue mass.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of acute exercise on IL-17 concentrations in hot and neutral environments in trained males. Ten trained, non-heat acclimated males performed two 1 h run on treadmill at 60% VO2max in neutral (22±1 °C, 50±5RH) and hot (35±1 °C, 50±5) temperature conditions. Samples of the venous blood were taken (Pre, post, 2 h post) for determination of serum IL-17, cortisol concentrations and numbers of leukocytes and neutrophils. In addition, body temperature, RPE and PVC during exercise were measured. The collected data were analyzed using the Repeated-Measures analyses of variance and Bonferroni post hoc and Paird T tests (p<0.05). The concentration of cortisol and total number of leukocytes increased significantly after exercise, in both conditions (p<0.0001) and were significantly higher in hot than neutral (p=0.016, p=0.002). During the rest period (2 h post) the number of neutrophils increased significantly in hot environment (p=0.018). The concentrations of IL-17 increased significantly only after exercise in hot (p<0.0001) and were significantly higher during hot than neutral (p=0.002). The results suggest that exercise in hot environment cause increase in body temperature, perceived exertion and cardiac-vascular changes which are sufficient to elicit immune, hormonal and inflammatory responses. The present results confirm the additive effect of heat stress on the IL-17 response during exercise.  相似文献

Existing biomechanical evidence suggests mechanisms of low back injuries and disorders associated with prolonged stooping. However, no research has tested realistic and more natural stooped work conditions with human subjects in the investigation of the biomechanical responses of the low back in prolonged stooping. The current study was aimed to explore various biomechanical responses of the low back in more realistic and work-related loading and posture conditions of prolonged stooping. Twenty two subjects performed stooped work tasks for 7 min with periodic micro-breaks in upright standing, and various measures for assessing biomechanical responses of the low back were obtained before, during and immediately after the stooped work period. Study results found significant increases (p < 0.05) in the range of lumbar flexion and myoelectric activation of the low back muscles after the stooped work period. During stooped work, the low back extensor muscles did not show flexion–relaxation. It could be concluded that the natural and unrestricted stooped work conditions produced similar viscoelastic responses of the low back to what more severe stooping conditions with posture restrictions did in previous research, but could be more fatigue-prone due to low but consistent activation of the low back extensor muscles during stooped work activities.  相似文献

In select Helicobacter pylori-infected populations with low gastric cancer, nematode coinfections are common and both helicobacter gastritis and filariasis are modeled in gerbils. We evaluated gastritis, worm counts, tissue cytokine gene expression levels and Th1/Th2-associated antibody responses in H. pylori and Brugia pahangi mono- and coinfected gerbils. H. pylori-associated gastritis indices were significantly lower 21 weeks post-infection in coinfected gerbils (p ≤ 0.05) and were inversely proportional to worm counts (r2 = ?0.62, p < 0.003). Additionally, IFN-γ, IL-1β, CXCL1, IL-4 and IL-10 mRNA levels in the gastric antrum reflected a significant host response to gastric H. pylori and as well as systemic filariasis (p ≤ 0.05). Despite increasing worm burden (p < 0.05), gastritis progressed in coinfected gerbils (p < 0.03) becoming equivalent to H. pylori-infected gerbils at 42 weeks (p = 0.7). Pro- and anti-inflammatory mediator mRNA levels were notably downregulated in B. pahangi infected gerbils below uninfected control values, suggesting hyporesponsiveness to B. pahangi. Consistent with an increasing Th1 response to H. pylori, IgG2a (p < 0.01), IL-1β (p = 0.04) and CXCL1 (p = 0.006) responses significantly increased and IL-4 (p = 0.05) and IL-10 (p = 0.04) were decreased in coinfected gerbils at 42 weeks. Initial systemic responses to B. pahangi resulted in attenuated gastritis in coinfected gerbils, but subsequent filarid-associated hyporesponsiveness appears to have promoted H. pylori gastritis.  相似文献

Although the link between impaired lung function and cardiovascular events and type 2 diabetes mellitus has been recognized, the association between impaired lung function and metabolic syndrome has not been comprehensively assessed in the United States (U.S.) population. The aim of our study was to explore the association between impaired lung function and metabolic syndrome in a nationally representative sample of men and women. This cross-sectional population-based study included 8602 participants aged 20–65 years in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III). We examined the relationship between the different features of metabolic syndrome and lung function, including forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1). After adjusting for potential confounders such as age, body mass index, inflammatory factors, medical condition, and smoking status, participants with more components of metabolic syndrome had lower predicted values of FVC and FEV1 (p for trend <0.001 for both). Impaired pulmonary function was also associated with individual components of metabolic syndrome, such as abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, and low high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (p<0.05 for all parameters). These results from a nationally representative sample of US adults suggest that a greater number of features of metabolic syndrome is strongly associated with poorer FVC and FEV1. In clinical practice, more comprehensive management strategies to address subjects with metabolic syndrome and impaired lung function need to be developed and investigated.  相似文献
