Crop sanitation (removal and chopping of residue corms and pseudostems following plant harvest) has been recommended as a ‘best bet’ means of reducing banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), populations. However, it has been unclear when such practices should be carried out and what types of residues should be destroyed. Therefore, trials were conducted in Uganda to determine C. sordidus distribution, timing of attack, and oviposition on crop residues and growing plants. Assessments were performed in on‐station trials on different aged standing and prostrate residues by destructive sampling. Similar data were collected from farmers’ fields maintained at low, moderate, and high levels of sanitation. In the on‐station trial, oviposition occurred on up to 120‐day‐old residues, although most occurred within 30 days of harvest. In a second on‐station experiment, oviposition on standing residues was not significantly affected by residue age. By contrast, oviposition on prostrate residues was two times higher on 4‐week‐old than on 2‐week‐old residues, while the number of larvae on 8‐week‐old residues was three times higher than on 2‐week‐old residues. The number of adults was twice as high on 16‐week‐old residues as that on 2‐week‐old residues for both prostrate and standing residues. Farmers’ fields maintained at high sanitation had 50% fewer eggs per residue than farms with low sanitation levels. In general, the number of immatures per residue was 50% higher on banana corms than on pseudostems. Numbers of larvae per residue were three times more abundant at low than at high sanitation levels. Residues in fields with high sanitation supported 50% fewer adults than residues in low sanitation fields. The results suggest that removal and splitting of corms after harvest is effective and practical in destroying immature growth stages of the pest and that such practices should be carried out soon after harvest.  相似文献

Abstract:  Autumn applications of the repellent processed-kaolin particle film (Surround® WP) might be an alternative to the insecticides commonly used in spring to control the rosy apple aphid, Dysaphis plantaginea (Pass.) (Hom., Aphididae). To assess the mode of action and the impact of kaolin on autumn forms of D. plantaginea , trials were conducted in field cages and in open-fields in autumn 2003. Choice and no-choice experiments in field cages showed that winged aphids landed in significantly lower numbers and gave birth to significantly fewer females on kaolin-treated branches compared with the untreated control. In a first open-field trial, single applications at 10 different dates and with two different concentrations of kaolin were conducted after harvest to assess the influence of the kaolin concentration on the autumn forms of D. plantaginea . No differences were found between the different concentrations and spraying dates. In a second open-field trial, single and multiple applications of kaolin were tested at different dates after harvest. Repeated applications of kaolin significantly reduced females in autumn and fundatrices in spring, whereas single kaolin treatments had no significant effect on D. plantaginea . None of the kaolin treatments reduced aphids below the economic threshold. In conclusion, kaolin showed promising results to control autumn forms of D. plantaginea. However, with a more detailed forecasting model for the autumnal flight of this aphid, treatments could be conducted more precisely and more effectively, especially in years with exceptional climatic conditions, such as in 2003.  相似文献

The extent to which past states influence present and future ecosystem characteristics (ecosystem memory (EM)) is challenging to assess because signals of past ecological conditions fade with time. Using data about seven different taxa, we show that ecological gradients initiated by wildfires up to three centuries earlier affect biotic recovery after variable retention harvest in the boreal mixedwood forest. First, we show that fire history over the last 300 years is reflected in pre‐harvest species‐specific stand basal area (BA), with longer times since high severity fire associated with proportionally higher BA of shade‐tolerant softwood species than shade‐intolerant hardwoods. Second, using patterns in the BA of pre‐harvest tree species we link fire history to species composition of pre‐harvest assemblages of bryophytes, herbs, shrubs, regenerated trees, songbirds, spiders and carabid beetles. Finally, we use variance partitioning to compare the importance of species‐specific pre‐ versus post‐harvest BA for explaining the structure of these seven biotic assemblages two, five and ten years after harvest. We detected persistent significant effects of pre‐harvest BA in all post‐harvest biotic assemblages up to ten years after harvest. Pre‐harvest BA was more strongly associated with early post‐harvest understory plant and carabid beetle assemblages than was post‐harvest BA, but the opposite was true for spiders, songbirds and regenerated trees. EM effects were detected two, five and ten years after harvest but temporal patterns varied according to taxa. Thus, EM of fire history can persist at least ten years after variable retention harvest and such effects appear to be stronger for understory plants than for animals. We conclude that management of biological legacies to increase post‐disturbance EM will increase overall resilience and sustainability of these mixedwood forests.  相似文献

The main objective of the present work was to determine the nutritional value and the strategies of using green banana meal (BM) in growing pigs. Two trials involving a total of 96 growing pigs were designed to study the effect of the harvest stage on the nutritional and energy values of BM (trial 1) and to evaluate the consequence of feeding gradual levels of BM on growth performance and feeding behavior in growing pigs (trial 2). In trial 1, the digestive utilization of three diets including 40% BM were compared with a control (C) soybean meal-corn diet in two batches of 12 pigs. BM was obtained from fruits harvested at 750 degrees-days (DD; early harvesting stage), 900 DD (normal harvesting stage) and 1150 DD (late harvesting stage). In trial 2, 72 Large White pigs were grouped in pens of nine animals and were given ad libitum access to one of the four dietary treatments (two pens/diet) differing from the rate of inclusion of 900 DD BM (0%, 20%, 40%, 60%). The estimated energy apparent digestibility coefficients of BM increased with the harvest stage (75.5%, 80.7% and 83.2% for BM at 750, 900 and 1150 DD, respectively). Digestible energy and metabolizable energy values were higher for BM at 1150 DD (13.56 and 13.05 MJ/kg DM, respectively) than at 900 DD (13.11 and 12.75 MJ/kg DM, respectively) or at 750 DD (12.00 and 11.75 MJ/kg DM, respectively). In trial 2, average daily gain and feed conversion ratio were not affected (P>0.05) by the rate of BM inclusion (822 g/day and 2.75 kg/kg on average, respectively). Feed intake and feeding behavior parameters were not significantly influenced by the dietary treatments except for the rate of feed ingestion with a lower value for the diet with 40% of BM (27.4 v. 32.2 g/min on average; P<0.01) when compared with the other diets. Results of this study indicate that the energy value of BM increases with the harvest stage and that BM can be incorporated up to 60% in growing finishing pig diets.  相似文献

Microbial biomass C and N, and anaerobically mineralizable-N, were measured in the litter and mineral soil (0–10 cm and 10–20 cm depth) of Pinus radiata plantations in two trials on a nitrogen-deficient coastal sand. The trials comprised (a) stands of different age (1 to 33 years), with five of the seven stands studied being second rotation, and (b) a harvest-management trial, with stands established after different harvesting treatments of the first-rotation trees and understorey development controlled by manual weeding and chemical sprays. The harvest-management stands were sampled in the fifth year after the second-rotation establishment. In the stands of different age, the levels of microbial biomass C and N, and also mineralizable-N, in the litter and mineral soil showed no relationship with tree age and were similar to those in the oldest (33 years) stands of P. radiata. In the harvesting trial, five years after establishment of the second rotation, levels of microbial N and mineralizable-N in the litter and mineral soil were generally lowest where whole trees and the original forest floor had been removed; they were higher in associated plots in which the original forest floor had been removed but fertilizer N was regularly applied. No marked differences were then found between the other harvest treatments, viz. whole-tree harvest, stem-only harvest with slash remaining on site, and stem-only harvest plus extra added slash materials. In each trial, levels of microbial C and N and mineralizable-N were closely related to total C, and especially total N, in 0–10 cm depth mineral soil, but not generally in litter. Respiratory measurements strongly suggest that the microbial populations in mineral soil had a high metabolic activity. On an area basis in the harvest-management trial, total tree N and microbial N in the litter and mineral soil were lowest in stands where the original forest floor had been removed. In this particular treatment, microbial N in the litter plus mineral soil (0–20 cm depth) after five years of second-rotation growth comprised 7.3% of the total ecosystem N; values in the other treatments ranged between 5.6 and 6.0%.Our results emphasise the importance of slash and litter, and probably volunteer shrubs and herbaceous under-storey species, in conserving pools of potentially available N during the early stages of tree development.  相似文献

Large quantities of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) corn plant residue are left in the field after harvest, which may have implications for the soil ecosystem. Potential impacts on soil organisms will also depend on the persistence of the Bt toxin in plant residues. Therefore, it is important to know how long the toxin persists in plant residues. In two field studies in the temperate corn-growing region of Switzerland we investigated degradation of the Cry1Ab toxin in transgenic Bt corn leaves during autumn, winter and spring using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In the first field trial, representing a tillage system, no degradation of the Cry1Ab toxin was observed during the first month. During the second month, Cry1Ab toxin concentrations decreased to approximately 20% of their initial values. During winter, there was no further degradation. When temperatures again increased in spring, the toxin continued to degrade slowly, but could still be detected in June. In the second field trial, representing a no-tillage system, Cry1Ab toxin concentrations decreased without initial delay as for soil-incorporated Bt plants, to 38% of the initial concentration during the first 40 days. They then continued to decrease until the end of the trial after 200 days in June, when 0.3% of the initial amount of Cry1Ab toxin was detected. Our results suggest that extended pre- and post-commercial monitoring are necessary to assess the long-term impact of Bt toxin in transgenic plant residues on soil organisms.  相似文献

Summary

Bog myrtle communities were surveyed to determine their accessibility for harvesting and the approximate number of harvestable stems. At least 45.1 million bog myrtle stems within Scotland may be both suitable (about 55 cm long) and easily accessible (< 1 km from a tarmac road) for harvesting. In a harvesting trial in Strath Avon, plants were subjected to five different cutting treatments with and without the addition of NPK. There were significant differences between cutting treatments, but no significant effects of fertilizer. Cutting all stems to half height produced the most rapid regeneration. Stems could take eight years to regenerate to a harvestable size if this cutting method were employed. On this basis, a harvest of 5.6 million stems could be sustained annually, compared with a current harvest of about 0.6 million.  相似文献

Two field trials were conducted to investigate different herbage grasses and cereals for their susceptibility to the disease take‐all, for their impact on concentrations of the pathogen, Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici (Ggt), in soil and for their effect on development of take‐all in a subsequent wheat crop. In the herbage grass trial, Bromus willdenowii was highly susceptible to Ggt, produced the greatest post‐senescence Ggt concentrations in soil and highest incidence of take‐all in following wheat crop. Lolium perenne, Lolium multiflorum and Festuca arundinacea supported low Ggt soil concentrations and fallow the least. The relationship between susceptibility to Ggt and post‐senescence concentrations in soil differed between pasture grasses and cereals. In a trial in which Ggt was added to half the plots and where wheat, barley, triticale, rye or fallow were compared, the susceptibility of the cereals to take‐all was not clearly linked to post‐harvest soil Ggt concentrations. In particular, triticale and rye had low and negligible take‐all infection respectively, but greater post‐harvest soil Ggt concentrations than barley or wheat. This indicates that low Ggt concentrations on roots may build up during crop senescence on some cereals. Soil Ggt concentrations were greater following harvest in inoculated plots sown to cereals, but in the second year there was more take‐all in the previously non‐inoculated than inoculated plots. Thus, the grass and cereal species differed in susceptibility to take‐all, in their impact on Ggt multiplication and in associated take‐all severity in following wheat crop.  相似文献

Summary The effect of soil water status on the critical phosphorus concentration (CPC) determined in apices and whole tops ofStylosanthes hamata cv. Verano was investigated in a glasshouse trial. The species was grown with six rates of P and three ranges of soil water potential and was harvested at 10 and 14 weeks after germination. The CPC of both whole tops and apices decliced between the two harvests. At the first harvest the CPC of both whole tops and apices increased as the soil water potential decreased but at the second harvest there was no effect of soil water potential on CPC. It is suggested that at the earlier harvest water stress was delaying physiological development, resulting in a CPC characteristic of chronologically younger tissue, but that by the second harvest the decline in CPC with age had ceased for all water treatments.  相似文献

In the context of trials conducted in cold store, in order to investigate efficacy of fruit protection applying agrochemicals, the fate during the storage of two active ingredients (a.i.): pyrimethanil and imazalil, have been studied. The experimental trials were done on eight varieties of apples and pears and two of grapes. Only field use of named pesticides was already authorised on fruits and maximum residue limits (MRL) fixed. In the present biennial experimentation (apples and pears in the first year; grapes in the second one). Two fungicides formulations were applied and treatments have been executed by thermonebulization technique. The storage cell, had a volume of 110 m3 filled up with the fruits until 80% of its capacity. Each fruit variety constituted one thesis of 4 replicates. For each trial, only one treatment was performed at the beginning of conservation period (72 days for pears and apples, and 57 days for grapes). In order to estimate fungicides persistence, residues determinations have been carried out. From results obtained especially on grape, not homogenous residues distribution on treated commodities was observed. For all theses, residue level has not evidenced statistically significant decrement as function of time, behaviour not as observed in field tests. The following average values of residues have been determined: in apples and pears, 0.7 mg/kg of imazalil much lower than 5 mg/kg (RML fixed for field use), and 1.2 mg/kg of pyrimethanil little higher than 1 mg/kg (RML fixed for field use); in grapes 0.5 mg/kg pyrimethanil much lower than 3 mg/kg (RML fixed for field use).  相似文献

Arthropods play a key role in the functioning of forest ecosystems and contribute to biological diversity. However, the influence of current silvicultural practices on arthropod communities is little known in jack pine (Pinus banksiana) forests, a forest type comprising a major portion of the Canadian boreal forest. In this study, the effects of silvicultural treatments on arthropod communities were compared to identify those treatments that minimize ecological impacts on arthropods. The influence of harvesting techniques and mechanical site preparations on insect family richness and abundance of arthropods (total, by orders and by trophic groups) was examined in young (three-year-old) jack pine plantations of northern Ontario. Each of the following treatments were conducted in three plots: (1) tree length harvest and trenching; (2) full tree harvest and trenching; (3) full tree harvest and blading; and (4) full tree harvest and no site preparation. Arthropods were collected using sweepnets and pitfall traps over two years. Blading significantly reduced insect family richness, the total abundance of arthropods, abundance of Orthoptera, Heteroptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera, insect larvae, and plant feeders when compared to the other treatments. The use of either full tree or tree length harvesting had similar short-term effects on family richness and the abundance of arthropods. Arthropod diversity declined with increasing post-harvest site disturbance. These results suggest that arthropod communities in the understory and on the ground are reduced most on sites mechanically prepared by blading, but are similar under conditions immediately following either full tree or tree length harvesting. The implications for regenerating jack pine in the boreal forest are discussed.  相似文献

The effects of gamma irradiation and disease control treatments on disease severity and post harvest quality of several mango cultivars were investigated.
In mangoes cv. Kensington Pride, irradiation doses ranging from 300–1200 Gy reduced disease, but the level of control was not commercially acceptable. Hot benomyl immediately followed by irradiation provided effective control of anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) and stem end rot (Dothiorella dominicana) during short-term storage (15 days at 20°C). The effects of the two treatments were additive.
Satisfactory disease control was achieved during long term controlled atmosphere storage when mangoes were treated with hot benomyl followed by prochloraz and then irradiated. Effects of fungicide treatment and irradiation were additive. Fungicide, or irradiation treatments alone, were unsatisfactory.
Irradiation of cv. Kensington Pride at doses in excess of 600 Gy caused unacceptable surface damage (i.e. lenticel spotting, surface discolouration and retardation of degreening) which was particularly severe after long-term controlled atmosphere storage.
In a separate short-term storage trial, several other mango cultivars were assessed. Hot benomyl followed by prochloraz controlled anthracnose on all cultivars and stem end rot on some. Irradiation at 600 Gy contributed only minor improvements to disease control. The severity of surface damage that developed following irradiation and fungicide treatment varied with cultivars.  相似文献

Forest harvest residues are important raw materials for bioenergy in regions practicing forestry. Removing these residues from a harvest site reduces the carbon stock of the forest compared with conventional stem‐only harvest because less litter in left on the site. The indirect carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from producing bioenergy occur when carbon in the logging residues is emitted into the atmosphere at once through combustion, instead of being released little by little as a result of decomposition at the harvest sites. In this study (1) we introduce an approach to calculate this indirect emission from using logging residues for bioenergy production, and (2) estimate this emission at a typical target of harvest residue removal, i.e. boreal Norway spruce forest in Finland. The removal of stumps caused a larger indirect emission per unit of energy produced than the removal of branches because of a lower decomposition rate of the stumps. The indirect emission per unit of energy produced decreased with time since starting to collect the harvest residues as a result of decomposition at older harvest sites. During the 100 years of conducting this practice, the indirect emission from average‐sized branches (diameter 2 cm) decreased from 340 to 70 kg CO2 eq. MWh?1 and that from stumps (diameter 26 cm) from 340 to 160 kg CO2 eq. MWh?1. These emissions are an order of magnitude larger than the other emissions (collecting, transporting, etc.) from the bioenergy production chain. When the bioenergy production was started, the total emissions were comparable to fossil fuels. The practice had to be carried out for 22 (stumps) or four (branches) years until the total emissions dropped below the emissions of natural gas. Our results emphasize the importance of accounting for land‐use‐related indirect emissions to correctly estimate the efficiency of bioenergy in reducing CO2 emission into the atmosphere.  相似文献

Nutrient concentrations in current and 1-year old needles from two Picea abies (L.) Karst and two Pinus sylvestris L. stands in Sweden were determined 8–10, 16–18 and 22–24 years after clear-felling and experimental manipulation of harvesting intensity. On all sites, three levels of harvest intensity had been applied in a randomized block design (n=4); (i) conventional stem-only harvesting, where all logging residues (i.e. tops, branches and needles) were evenly distributed on the ground, (ii) harvesting all above-ground tree parts except needles and (iii) above-ground whole-tree harvesting (no residues left on site). At stand age 8–10 years, nitrogen concentrations in the current year needles in plots where all residues or needles only were retained were higher than in whole-tree harvested plots, whereas concentrations of K, Ca and Mg were lower. The latter response was interpreted as a dilution effect. P:N, K:N, Ca:N, Mg:N, Mn:N and Zn:N were in general higher after whole-tree harvesting treatments than after the treatments where all residues or only needles had been left on site. At stand age 16–18 years, no significant differences in nitrogen concentrations were observed between treatments, but the levels of Ca, Mg and Mn in both current and 1-year-old needles were lower after whole-tree harvesting than after the treatments where logging residues remained on site. By contrast, potassium levels in the foliage were highest in treatments where only the needles were left on site, whereas the lowest levels were observed for treatments where all residues was left. At stand age 22–24 years, the treatment effects had diminished, except for the effects on Ca and K on the southern Norway spruce stand. It is concluded that the nutrient release from logging residues enhances nutrient uptake in trees of the succeeding forest generation, but this effect does not occur simultaneously for all elements. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Locally-produced clear plastic water traps (12 cm x 14 cm base and 21 cm height) were optimized for use in large-scale mass trapping trials for control of brinjal fruit and shoot borer, Leucinodes orbonalis Guenée. Changing the shape (square and triangular) and number (two and four) of entry holes in the water trap had no significant effect on trap catch. Significantly more male moths were caught in traps treated with water containing powdered detergent than liquid detergent, light gear oil or insecticide. All water traps tested caught significantly higher numbers of moths than sticky delta traps with open sides under farmers' field conditions. Trap catches per 100 m2 were found to increase with increasing number of traps from 3 to 6 but the difference in catch between 4 and 6 traps per 100 m2 was not significant. Two small-scale replicated integrated pest management (IPM) trials were conducted consisting of the optimized water trap placed out with 10 m spacing (4 per 100 m2) and infested shoots pruned and destroyed. The first season trial had two treatments, IPM and farmers' practice in which farmers applied insecticide every two days in the peak harvest period. Overall, the percentage of healthy fruit and yields in both treatments were comparable at 53.8 and 49.6% and 20 and 19.4 tonnes per ha in the IPM and farmers' practice plots respectively. However, the initial infestations in the IPM plots (68%) were significantly higher than in farmers' practice plots (16%) due to the proximity of the nurseries used for the IPM plots to stacks of brinjal crop residues from the previous season that acted as a source of infestation. The second season's trials contained a third treatment in which IPM and farmers' practice were combined. The percent total healthy fruits harvested were 46.1, 58.6 and 69.1% respectively for the farmers' practice, farmers' practice plus IPM and IPM alone. Averaged total fruit yields were approximately 12 tonnes per ha for the farmers' practice plots and 30 tonnes per ha for each of the IPM-treated plots. The IPM plot had significantly fewer infested fruit than the IPM plus farmers practice plots and this was attributed to the activity of the larval parasitoid Trathala flavo-orbitalis (Cameron) that was suppressed in trial plots treated with insecticides.  相似文献

The efficacy and cost of reduced release rates of the parasitoid Eretmocerus eremicus Rose and Zolnerowich (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) when combined with application of the insect growth regulator buprofezin were compared to those of a higher parasitoid release rate used alone for whitefly control (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) on poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. ex Koltz.). The trial was conducted in seven greenhouses in Methuen, Massachusetts from August through December 1997 and employed commercial poinsettia production practices. Two whiteflies species, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) and Bemisia argentifolii Bellows and Perring (= Bemisia tabaci [Gennadius] strain B), were present. Three treatments were examined: (1) E. eremicus used alone at a release rate of three females per plant per week (two greenhouses); (2) E. eremicus at an intermediate release rate of two females per plant per week, combined with mid-season use of buprofezin (two applications, spaced 1 week apart, applied in weeks 9 and 10) (two greenhouses); and (3) E. eremicus at a low release rate of one female per plant per week, combined with mid-season use of buprofezin, applied as in treatment 2 (two greenhouses). In addition, observations were made in one additional greenhouse at the site, in which the grower used pesticides for whitefly control. Prior to the start of the trial, cuttings used for all treatments experienced some pesticide use, first abamectinduring rooting and later buprofezin at potting to reduce whitefly numbers, which were initially very high. At harvest, densities of live whitefly nymphs were not statistically different among the biological control treatments, indicating that a low parasitoid release rate combined with buprofezin was as effective as a higher release rate of the parasitoid used alone. Nymphal densities in separate market samples (based on smaller sample sizes) showed differences among treatments, but all treatments, including the low parasitoid release rate + buprofezin maintained densities of live nymphs + pupae at or below approximately two per leaf, a level commercially acceptable in local markets. Control costs per single-stemmed poinsettia plant were $1.18 for the high parasitoid release treatment, $0.75 for the treatment of weekly releases of two female parasitoids per plant per week + buprofezin, $0.38 for the treatment of releases of one female parasitoid per plant per week + buprofezin, and $0.14 for the chemical control greenhouse.  相似文献

Increasing bioenergy production from forest harvest residues decreases litter input to the soil and can thus reduce the carbon stock and sink of forests. This effect may negate greenhouse gas savings obtained by using bioenergy. We used a spatially explicit modelling framework to assess the reduction in the forest litter and soil carbon stocks across Europe, assuming that a sustainable potential of bioenergy from forest harvest residues is taken into use. The forest harvest residue removal reduced the carbon stocks of litter and soil on average by 3% over the period from 2016 to 2100. The reduction was small compared to the size of the carbon stocks but significant in comparison to the amount of energy produced from the residues. As a result of these land-use-related emissions, bioenergy production from forest harvest residues would need to be continued for 60–80 years to achieve a 60% carbon dioxide (CO2) emission reduction in heat and power generation compared to the fossil fuels it replaces in most European countries. The emission reductions achieved and their timings varied among countries because of differences in the litter and soil carbon loss. Our results show that extending the current sustainability requirements for bioliquids and biofuels to solid bioenergy does not guarantee efficient reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in the short-term. In the longer-term, bioenergy from forest harvest residues may pave the way to low-emission energy systems.  相似文献
