The diet change with size, season and area was investigated using the stomachs of 496 kingclip Genypterus blacodes collected around the Falkland Islands (south‐west Atlantic) between August 2001 and September 2002. The key prey species were rockcod Patagonotothen spp., benthic isopods and Patagonian grenadier Macruronus magellanicus . Kingclip <50 cm total length ( L T) fed mainly on crustaceans and small fishes. With size the diet shifted away from crustaceans towards Patagonotothen spp. in kingclip 50–100 cm L T, and finally towards larger fishes such as M. magellanicus and Micromesistius australis australis in kingclip >100 cm L T. The niche breadth was highest in fish >100 cm L T and the lowest in fish <50 cm L T. The larger kingclip generally selected larger individuals of the same prey species, with the exception of the Patagonian squid Loligo gahi , where all ingested squid were of similar size, regardless of the predator length. The importance of the main prey species varied substantially between five consequent seasons studied, and appeared to follow the seasonal abundance and availability of prey. The spatial variability in the diet was found in kingclip caught in regions occupied by transformed temperate and sub‐Antarctic waters. The rockcod, which is available throughout the year around the Falkland Islands, was the most important prey in the kingclip diet. Kingclip takes advantage of other seasonally abundant prey species during their seasonal migrations ( e.g . L. gahi ) and also scavenge on discards from fishing vessels when available.  相似文献

Small‐scale spatial variation in life history was found among genetically distinct local populations of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua from the Norwegian Skagerrak coast. Among populations, age at 50% maturity varied from 2·6 to 3·8 years, total ( L T) length at 50% maturity from 35 to 60 cm, annual survival from 33 to 64%, mean L T at age 4 years from 43 to 63 cm, and mean backcalculated L T at age 1 year from 8 to 12 cm.  相似文献

The trophic linkage between yellow perch Perca flavescens and two exotic prey items, alewife Alosa pseudoharengus and round goby Neogobius melanostomus , was investigated in the extreme southern area of Lake Michigan during the summer of 2002. Yellow perch ≥100 mm total length, L T( n  = 1293) exhibited size selective feeding, with 148 fish containing round gobies and 120 fish containing alewives. The mean round goby L T, preyed on by yellow perch, was 23% of the predator L T, with a range of 7 to 47%, and mean alewife L T was 32% of yellow perch L T, with a range of 18 to 46%. Although the selection of prey size by yellow perch increased proportionally with yellow perch L T, prey consumed appeared smaller than theoretically possible based on gape size.  相似文献

Decreased critical swimming speed and increased oxygen consumption (     ) was found for externally tagged Atlantic cod Gadus morhua swimming at a high speed of 0·9 body length (total length, L T) s−1. No difference was found in the standard metabolic rate, indicating that the higher     for tagged cod was due to drag force rather than increased costs to keep buoyancy.  相似文献

Size-dependent interactions between piscivorous perch Perca fluviatilis (age ≥1 year) and their fish prey age 0 year perch, pikeperch Sander lucioperca and roach Rutilus rutilus in the biomanipulated Bautzen Reservoir indicated that the highest ratio of prey total length ( L T) to predator L T was 59%. Perch L T and prey fish L T were positively and linearly related. Perch L T was strongly related with both gape width and gape height. Within the range 80–110 mm L T, the gape height of perch exceeded gape width, while beginning at 120 mm L T the gape width exceeded gape height. The minimum, maximum and mean prey L T and prey body depths of all three prey species increased with increasing predator size, but the increases in mean sizes of perch and pikeperch as prey were less than that of roach. The low limit of the 'predation window' observed in this study coupled with results of previous studies on perch in the Bautzen Reservoir indicated that perch had a major impact on the population dynamics of both perch and pikeperch.  相似文献

Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated for silver hake Merluccius bilinearis within four regions of the United States continental shelf ecosystem of the northwest Atlantic Ocean during 1975–1980, 1982–1987 and 1988–1992. Differences in silver hake growth were found between the Middle Atlantic and southern Georges Bank regions ( P <0–01) over all three time periods. Growth also differed between northern Georges Bank and the Gulf of Maine ( P <0–01) during 1975–1980 and 1982–1987, and significant differences between southern Georges Bank and northern Georges Bank were found only during 1982–1987. Silver hake in the Gulf of Maine exhibited larger asymptotic sizes, but attained their asymptotic size at slower rates (L00= 47 cm and K =0–33) in comparison to silver hake in the Middle Atlantic ( L00= 43 cm and K =0–51), while growth parameter estimates for silver hake on Georges Bank were intermediate between these. Although significant differences in growth of silver hake between the various regions are consistent with separate stocks in the U.S. continental shelf ecosystem, the growth characteristics from the different regions are inconsistent with the presently assigned stock boundaries. Major temporal changes in the importance of euphausiids and Atlantic herring Clupea harengus in the diet of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua , 10–75 cm L F, occurred in shallow waters (<100 m depths) of the southern Gulf of St Lawrence between 1959 and 2000. Euphausiids represented 6–70% of prey mass for Atlantic cod 31–60 cm L F from 1959 to 1987 but only trace amounts were detected in stomachs collected from 1990 to 2000. Mysids and gammarid amphipods (for Atlantic cod ≤45 cm L F), and Atlantic herring (for Atlantic cod >45 cm L F) largely replaced euphausiids in the Atlantic cod diets from 1990 to 2000. This diet change suggested there has been a major perturbation of the food web of the southern Gulf of St Lawrence. The importance of fishes (mostly Atlantic herring) in the diet of Atlantic cod >45 cm L F increased significantly between the periods 1959–1980 and 1987–2000. Atlantic herring comprised 0–4% (mean 1.3%) of prey mass of Atlantic cod 46–60 cm L F from 1959 to 1980 and increased to 2–42% (mean 19.6%) of the diet from 1987 to 2000. Atlantic herring comprised 0–25% (mean 9.4%) of the prey mass of Atlantic cod 61–75 cm L F from 1959 to 1980 and increased to 42–81% (mean 54.2%) of prey mass from 1987 to 2000. This increased consumption of Atlantic herring was consistent with observed changes in abundance of Atlantic herring in the ecosystem between the late 1970s and 2000. The large changes in consumption of euphausiids and Atlantic herring represent highly significant changes and would need to be included in the development and interpretation of ecosystem-based management models for this ecosystem.  相似文献

The seasonal diet of a predator, brown trout Salmo trutta [total length ( L T) 17–69 cm] and simultaneous density and size‐structure of prey populations, vendace Coregonus albula and smelt Osmerus eperlanus (4–16 cm L T), in a large boreal lake were analysed and compared in 2001 and 2002. The upper L T limit for consumed prey was c . 40% of the predator L T. All brown trout, however, preferred small (<10 cm L T) and avoided large (≥10 cm L T) prey. The results also suggested that equal densities of similar‐sized (4–10 cm L T) fish of the two prey species led to random foraging on these species by brown trout, but if either one of the prey species predominated (>50%) in the lake, brown trout shifted to foraging on this species almost exclusively. Brown trout diets thus reflected the density dynamics of the two alternative prey species.  相似文献

The impact of delayed feeding early in development on late feeding ability and development of spotted sand bass Paralabrax maculatofasciatus larvae was examined. Larvae were sampled from hatching until day 19 after delayed feeding for zero (control), 1, 2, or 3 days. Feeding incidence was evaluated as the percentage of larvae with food in the gut and feeding intensity was measured by direct counting of prey after dissection of the gut. Delayed feeding effects due to starvation were observed early in development. By day 5, significant differences ( P  < 0·05) were observed between controls and larvae submitted to degrees of delayed feeding, including total length ( L T), eye diameter, and the size of the head, liver, gut, muscles and body. Differences were still apparent in L T, and body, liver and muscle heights at the end of the studied period. Larvae under total starvation did not survive beyond day 5. Initial feeding incidence was 35, 60, 90 and 10% for larvae first fed on day 2, 3, 4 or 5, respectively. Mean ±  s . d . feeding intensity was 3·6 ± 0·8, 2·8 ± 1·3, 5·2 ± 0·3, and 10·2 ± 1·5 rotifers per larva depending on whether larvae were initially fed on day 2, 3, 4 or 5, respectively. The point of no return occurred between 4 and 5 days after hatching.  相似文献

Female Rhizoprionodon acutus were found to mature between 62 and 74 cm total length ( L T) whereas males matured between 63 and 71 cm L T. The L T at 50% maturity was 64·3 cm for females and 64·7 cm for males. Litter size varied from one to six embryos, and was positively correlated with maternal L T. Female embryos outnumbered males by a ratio of 2·3:1. The size at birth was c . 37 cm L T. Full‐term embryos and post‐partum females were observed during all seasons although their occurrence was highest in spring. Spermatozoa were rarely recorded in the oviducal gland, indicating that this species does not store sperm. It was not possible to generate maturity curves for Iago omanensis but it was evident that females matured by the time they reached 35 cm and males were mature by 31 cm L T. This species displayed a clearly defined reproductive cycle with parturition occurring primarily in spring, after a gestation period of c . 1 year. Maximal embryo size was 19 cm L T while maximal litter size was 24 embryos. The oviducal gland appeared to act as a seminal receptacle and it appeared that females may utilize these stores by not mating every year.  相似文献

Knowledge on selectivity is considered essential for an adequate management of the trawl fishery. This paper compares the selectivity of conventionally used codends of 44 mm diamond mesh, 40 mm square, and hexagonal mesh for Atlantic horse mackerel, European hake and greater forkbeard in the eastern Mediterranean. Data were collected using the covered codend method and analyzed using the logistic equation with the maximum likelihood method. Mean selection curves were analyzed and compared using the between-haul variations model. The mean L 50 v alues of diamond, square and hexagonal mesh codends are 14.7, 15.9 and 17.1 cm total length (TL) for horse mackerel, 10.4, 14.4 and 11.0 cm TL for hake and 12.2, 15.8 and 12.7 cm TL for greater forkbeard, respectively. For horse mackerel, the differences among the codends are statistically significant (P   <   0.05); however, the L 50 values for all three meshes are higher than the minimum landing size (13 cm TL). For hake and greater forkbeard, the L 50 value for the square mesh codend is significantly different from the values for diamond and hexagonal meshes (P   <   0.01), whereas there is no significant difference between diamond and hexagonal meshes (P   >   0.05). Regardless of the mesh shape, L 50 values were substantially lower than the minimum landing size or size at first maturity for hake and greater forkbeard. To enable more effective solutions, research on species-selective trawls is required for the Mediterranean demersal trawl fishery.  相似文献

Growth of pikeperch Sander lucioperca in the eutrophic and clay-turbid Lake Sahajärvi, Southern Finland, was extremely slow in comparison with other lakes at similar latitudes. The most important food item in July was phantom midge larvae Chaoborus flavicans for all sizes of S. lucioperca (239–423 mm total length L T), while later, in August and September, the diet of S. lucioperca (149–407 mm L T) consisted of small (30–100 mm L T) perch Perca fluviatilis , ruffe Gymnocephalus cernuus and roach Rutilus rutilus .  相似文献

Age and total length ( L T) data from a 11 year monitoring of the Anguilla anguilla eel population of the Camargue lagoons (Rhône delta, southern France) were collected for glass, yellow and silver eels. Three distinct models were calibrated to describe the growth process of undifferentiated eels, females and males, respectively. Uncertainty of parameter estimates was evaluated by bootstrapping. Females were characterized by larger asymptotic body size ( L T) than males (580 ± 50 v . 388 ± 13 mm) and faster growth, whilst the Brody growth coefficient was larger for males than for females (means ±  s . d . 3·00 10−3 ± 1·68 10−3 v . 1·73 10−3 ± 0·50 10−3). Sexual differentiation was estimated to begin at 204 ± 38 mm mean ±  s . d ., i.e . at the end of the second year in the lagoons, well before the L T at which macroscopic differentiation became possible ( c . 300 mm). Males probably leave the lagoon or die (due to either natural or fishing mortality) within the first 3 years, whilst females can remain up to 5 years. Sexual differentiation and maturation have a major role in shaping the L T structure of the population. The L T and mass ( M ) data were fitted by allometric curves     . The calibration of distinct curves for data from different years indicated that the allometric coefficient a was subject to wider interannual fluctuations than the allometric exponent b . A negative correlation linked the average L T and the allometric exponent ( r  = −0·58, P  < 0·01).  相似文献

The diet, habitat use and mercury concentration of the small fish species, the straight fin barb Barbus paludinosus , were studied in Lake Awassa, Ethiopia, for a period of 1 year from February 2003 to January 2004. Stable isotope signatures of nitrogen and carbon in different total length ( L T) classes were used to determine trophic positions and organic carbon sources, respectively. Barbus paludinosus mainly occupied the protected benthic habitats (littoral and profundal) of the lake. The δ13C values were in the range from −24 to −19‰, indicating that the carbon source for B. paludinosus was benthic, as well. Small individuals (≤ 60 mm L T) mainly preyed upon ostracods, intermediate sizes (60–100 mm) on aquatic insects and gastropods, while a tiny cyprinodont fish Aplocheilichthys antinorii dominated the diet of large individuals (100–160 mm). The progressively increase in δ15N with increasing L T also indicated a diet shift towards piscivory in larger individuals. The mercury concentration ranging from 0·02 to 0·74 mg kg−1 wet mass (wm), was unexpectedly high in this small species, and was significantly positively related to L T, as well as to δ15N. Some large individuals had mercury concentrations < 0·1 mg kg−1 wm, and low δ15N, indicating substantial variations in diet between individuals of same size. The study suggests that other piscivorous species which include B. paludinosus in their diet may have a high mercury intake risk.  相似文献

The total lengths ( L T) at which 50% were mature of Psammobatis rudis and Psammobatis normani , in the south‐west Atlantic were: P. rudis , 428 mm for males and 414 mm for females and P. normani , 443 mm for males and 403 mm for females. Clasper length in mature males was greater in P. normani than in P. rudis , whereas oviducal gland width was not different between species. Females of P. normani with egg cases were found in every month sampled, and in January, March, April and July in P. rudis , although insufficient samples were available to identify peak oviposition times. Geographic variation in size frequency and maturity were found. The effects of oceanographic conditions and fishing pressure are discussed. Size at 50% maturity in both species was >74% of the maximum L T, indicating late sexual maturity and low potential stock recovery rate.  相似文献

By counting otolith daily increments juvenile Cape hake Merluccius capensis were found to grow faster than European hake Merluccius merluccius . The mean frequency of translucent zones in juveniles 130–240 mm L T were higher (×3·2) than the annual frequency, although their mean duration was shorter (1 month) than a season. Comparison between micro- and macro-structure readings showed that the latter tended to overestimate the age of juvenile hake, with 1 year old hake being overestimated by 18% in individuals of 160 and 210 mm L T.  相似文献

The ontogenetic development of the gut and accessory organs in large yellow croaker Pseudosciaena crocea was investigated using light microscopy from hatching up to the juvenile stage (40 days post hatch, dph). At 3 dph (mean ±  s . d ., 4·1 ± 0·1 mm total length, L T), coinciding with the buccopharynx opening, larvae started to feed exogenously, and the gut consisted of a well‐developed buccopharynx, a partially‐differentiated oesophagus and an intestine divided in three regions (anterior intestine, intermediate intestine and rectum). Yolk reserves were not completely depleted at the onset of exogenous feeding, and a period of mixed nutrition was observed up to 6 dph (4·3 ± 0·1 mm L T), when yolk was definitively exhausted. Important morphological changes occurred at the end of the larval period, coinciding with metamorphosis. At 17 dph (6·8 ± 0·6 mm L T), pyloric caeca differentiated at the junction of the pyloric stomach and the anterior intestine. Gastric glands were first observed at 21 dph (9·2 ± 1·2 mm L T), coinciding with the morphological development of the stomach in three different regions (cardiac, fundic and pyloric) according to the histological characteristics of their mucosa. At this age, large longitudinal folds appeared in the median and posterior oesophageal mucosa. These morphological and histological features suggested the achievement of a digestive system characteristic of large yellow croaker juveniles and adults.  相似文献

The distribution, total length ( L T) frequency and diet of Patagonotothen guntheri are described from 14 bottom trawl surveys conducted on the Shag Rocks and South Georgia shelves in the austral summers from 1986 to 2006. Patagonotothen guntheri (80–265 mm L T) were caught on the Shag Rocks shelf from depths of 111 to 470 m, but no specimens were caught on the South Georgia shelf. Multiple cohorts were present during each survey and L T-frequency analysis of these cohorts suggests that growth was slow (von Bertalanffy K = 0·133). Evidence from stomach contents and acoustic data (2005 and 2006) showed that P. guntheri is primarily a pelagic feeder, migrating from the sea floor towards the surface to feed during daylight. The diet of smaller fish (<140 mm) was dominated by copepods, predominantly Rhincalanus gigas , whilst larger fish principally consumed the pelagic hyperiid amphipod, Themisto gaudichaudii and Antarctic krill Euphausia superba . Some larger fish also took benthic prey.  相似文献

The size and depth distribution, stomach contents and reproductive status of Somniosus ( Somniosus ) microcephalus, Somniosus ( Somniosus ) pacificus and Somniosus ( Somniosus ) antarcticus were examined from specimens collected from the North and South Atlantic, North and South Pacific, and the Southern Ocean. Specimens ranged in size from 42 to 480 cm total length, L T, and were taken from depths of 35–1280 m. Stomach contents included coelenterates, gastropods, cephalopods, echinoderms, crustaceans, elasmobranchs, teleosts, penguins, marine mammals and human waste. Female S. ( S. ) microcephalus mature at c . 450 cm and S. ( S. ) antarcticus at c . 435 cm L T; a female S. ( S. ) pacificus of 430 cm was mature. Male S. ( S. ) microcephalus mature at c . 300 cm, but male S. ( S. ) antarcticus may not mature until c . 400 cm L T. The size at birth in these three species of Somniosus is c . 40 cm L T.  相似文献
