Foraging groups of Formosan subterranean termites, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki were tested for their relative humidity (RH) preference in a humidity gradient arena in the laboratory at a constant temperature of 26°C. Five RH levels (9%, 33%, 53%, 75%, and 98%) were maintained in the test arena comprising of a series of closed containers by using dry silica gel, saturated salt solutions, or distilled water alone. Termites gradually aggregated to the highest RH chamber in the arena. After 1 h, a significantly greater percentage of termites (≈46%) aggregated to the highest RH chamber (98%) than to the lower RH chambers (≤75%). After 12 h, > 97% of the termites aggregated to the 98% RH chamber. In survival tests, where termites were exposed to 15 combinatorial treatments of five RH levels (9%, 33%, 53%, 75%, and 98%) and three temperatures (20°C, 28°C, and 36°C) for a week, the survival was significantly influenced by RH, temperature, and their interaction. A significantly higher mortality was observed on termites exposed to ≤75% RH chambers than to 98% RH chamber at the three temperatures and significantly lower survival was found at 36°C than at 28°C or 20°C. The combination of temperature and RH plays an important role in the survival of C. formosanus.

The stabilization of living microbial agents for use as biological control agents is often accomplished through desiccation. Our air-drying studies with the entomopathogenic fungus Paecilomyces fumosoroseus have shown that the relative humidity (RH) of the drying air significantly affects the desiccation tolerance and the storage stability of blastospores. Drying air with a RH of more than 40% supported significantly higher rates of initial blastospore survival (68-82%) after drying compared to drying with lower relative humidity air. Drying air with a RH above 50% improved the shelf-life of the air-dried blastospore preparations. Adjustment of the pH or replacement of the spent medium with deionized water (d-H2O) in the blastospore suspension had no significant impact on blastospore desiccation tolerance or storage stability. We have developed and describe a lab-scale, air-drying chamber that delivers air flow over the sample and that can be operated at controlled relative humidity.

The ability of the sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci Gennad., to survive a range of environmental conditions was investigated in the laboratory. The range of temperature and humidity investigated corresponds to the normal climatic range during B. tabaci's summer migration in Israel. Adult whiteflies confined to small test cages were exposed to combinations of temperature (25, 30, 35, and 41 °C) and relative humidity (20, 50, 80, and 100%) for periods of 2, 4, or 6 h.A logistic regression model describing the four-dimensional surface defining percent survival as a function of time, temperature, and humidity was developed. Using stepwise regression to exclude non-significant terms, the linear predictor included temperature, and the products of temperature and time, and humidity and time. The model accounted for 75% of the variance. A reparameterization of the fitted regression model suggests that survival potential is conditioned by temperature conditions prevailing during the previous 10 h.Whitefly survival after 2 h exposure ranged from 90% survival at 20°C and 100% RH, to <2% survival at 41°C and 20% r.h.. No whiteflies survived more than 2 h exposure at these latter extremes of temperature and humidity. Survival rates decreased slightly after experimental whiteflies were kept in a cage with food a further 20 h at 25±2°C, 55±5% r.h. Investigations of the effects of hunger and virus infection, showed that both increased mortality.

Stomatal responses of attached bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) leaves to changing spectral composition ("white" - WL., blue - BL, or red - RL radiation), air humidity (100 % or about 4 % RH), and water potential of the root medium (close to 0 or −1.2 MPa) were determined by air flow porometer. Opening of stomata always increased under BL and decreased under RL. In response to decline in air humidity, leaf conductance showed transient increase before it reached lowered steady state. BL enhanced and RL diminished this response. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Collaborative research was conducted at the INRA Research Centers to assess the microbial control potential of Beauveria bassiana- and Lecanicillium lecanii-based formulations against whiteflies in protected crops under Mediterranean conditions. Four series of small-scale glasshouse trials were performed in 1999 and 2000 in southern France. Two applications at 4–5 day intervals of Naturalis-L and Mycotal were conducted on young larvae of the greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum, at rates recommended by the manufacturers. Because of the expectation that environmental conditions prevailing in Mediterranean greenhouse crops may lead to greater climatic constraints for mycoinsecticide efficacy than in more temperate areas, manipulation of the greenhouse climate has been used to aim at optimizing mycoinsecticide efficacy. The climatic management strategy was mainly based on closing the ridge vents 2 h more at night-time in so-called “humid” glasshouse compartment than in a “dry” one. Thus, the daily period at high humidity (>90% RH) was two or three times longer in the “humid” compartment than in the “dry” one. In spite of this differential, mycoinsecticide treatments reduced numbers of surviving whitefly larvae by >85% in the “humid” compartment as expected as favorable, as well as in the “dry” compartment, expected as unfavorable. The results indicated clearly that both B. bassiana- and L. lecanii-based mycoinsecticides have a strong potential for microbial control of whitefly larvae infesting tomato crops at moderate ambient humidity in Mediterranean glasshouses. Our investigations provided strong arguments for explaining these unexpected results. The RH conditions prevailing in the targeted insect habitat should be greatly disconnected from that of the ambient glasshouse air. We suggest that strategies of mycoinsecticide optimization against phyllophagous insects in protected crops have to take into account factors acting on the leaf transpiration activity.

Abstract The effects of relative humidity (RH) on cocoon formation and survival in the braconid parasitoid wasp Cotesia glomerata (L.) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) are investigated under various humidity conditions (50, 75, 90, 95 and 100% RH) at 20 °C and under an LD 16 : 8 h photoperiod. The mortality rate at the time of egression from hosts under 100% RH is significantly higher than for other RHs. Cocoon clusters formed at 100% RH spread significantly more than those formed at 50, 75, or 90% RH. Developmental periods differ significantly among RHs under which wasps developed. The mean period from the egression from hosts to adult emergence is 8.7 days when developed at 50–95% RHs, and 8.0 days at 100% RH. The emergence rates of C. glomerata that are maintained under the same humidity conditions after egression from hosts are not significantly different among RHs. However, emergence rates from cocoons that are transferred from 100% RH to 50 and 75% RH are < 70%, although the rates are > 90% in most cases. Some wasps do not emerge from cocoons: more than 60% die after adult eclosion at all RHs; the relative frequency of adult deaths is approximately 90% at 50% RH. Relative humidity influences the cluster and cocoon status strongly: both good clusters and cocoons are formed at low RHs. Emergence rates from cocoons of different ranks are significantly different: the rates of low‐rank cocoons are low at low RHs. The survival of C. glomerata is affected strongly by RH through cocoon formation.

The heat resistance to hot air of spores of Bacillus cereus (ATCC 14579) attached to carriers of stainless steel or silicone rubber was investigated in a range from 1% to 100% relative humidity (RH). Apart from an initial stage, linear survivor curves were obtained for all relative humidities. Neither the attachment itself nor the material of the carrier had an influence on the resistance. A distinct maximum of heat resistance was found at 40% RH. At 122°C the rate constants at 40% RH were five orders of magnitude smaller than at 100% RH and two orders of magnitude smaller than at 1% RH. At relative humidities of more than 40% the rate constants were strongly temperature dependent, whereas at lower relative humidities they were less temperature dependent. No significant influence of the relative humidity on the Arrhenius activation energy was found within each humidity range. The mean values were 295 kJ mol-1 for relative humidities of 60% to 100% RH and 165 kJ mol-1 for 1% to 20% RH. The occurrence of a maximum is ascribed to the existence of two inactivation mechanisms, the first is retarded and the second is accelerated by a reduction of relative humidity. It is assumed that the first mechanism is a protein denaturation. The second mechanism may be an oxidative process.

We examined the effect of ethylene on the growth of rice seedlings (Oryza sativa L.) at various degrees of humidity. Ethylene significantly suppressed the growth of shoots when applied to seedlings grown under 30% relative humidity (RH), but promoted the growth of shoots when applied to seedlings grown under 100% RH. The application of gibberellic acid (GA3) promoted the elongation of shoots in seedlings grown under 30% and 100% RH. Ethylene inhibited the shoot elongation induced by GA3 at 30% RH, but enhanced the elongation induced by GA3 at 100% RH. These results indicate that ethylene can either promote or suppress the growth of rice shoots depending on ambient humidity, and that these actions of ethylene may be mediated through modulating the responsiveness of shoots to gibberellin.

Abstract.  Water deprivation tolerance is investigated in the last larval stadium of Libellula depressa under various conditions of relative humidity (60–100% relative humidity; RH). Most of the larvae maintained at 100% RH emerge and, at lower RH levels show some resistance to dehydration because they die after a mean period ranging from 1.4 days at 60% RH up to 6.7 days at 90% RH. In dual-choice chambers with humidity gradients from 63–74% RH and from 68–84% RH, larvae spend most of the time in the moist side of the chamber. In a Y-tube olfactometer, the larvae reveal a positive hygrotaxis to two airstreams carrying different amounts of water vapour (98% vs. 50%) and spend most of their time in the 'humid' arm. The ecological significance of desiccation tolerance and hygropositive response in the last larval stadium of L. depressa is discussed in relation to the presence of hygroreceptors in dragonfly larvae.

The application of grafting in tomato production has substantially improved tomato quality and yields. It has been demonstrated that humidity plays an important role in the graft healing of seedlings. This study focuses on the optimum relative humidity (RH) conditions for scion and rootstock healing of grafted tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) seedlings. Two tomato cultivars, ‘Super Sunload’ and ‘Super Dotaerang’, grafted onto ‘B-Blocking’ rootstock were subjected to one of three RH regimens: 70–80, 80–90, or 90–100%. The results showed that the scions of both cultivars showed apparent wilting under the 70–80 and 80–90% RH treatments. On this basis, the 90–100% RH treatment was subdivided into 95–96, 97–98, and 99–100% RH treatments, which were then applied. Among these subdivided RH treatments, the fresh weights of the scions and rootstocks significantly increased in response to the treatments of 97–98 and 99–100% RH, and the graft union connection of both cultivars was also enhanced after two days of healing. Furthermore, lower levels of endogenous H2O2 and less activity of antioxidant enzymes were observed in both cultivars in response to treatment with 95–96 or 97–98% RH, which indicated that less oxidative stress occurred. Overall, it is suggested that 97–98% is the optimal RH level for the graft healing of tomato seedlings.

Factors affecting the persistence and activity of the infective juveniles (IJs) of the nematode Steinernema carpocapsae ’Mexican’ strain on the foliage of bean plants were determined at 45, 60 and 80% relative humidity (RH). The rate of nematode mortality was related to the RH. A gradual reduction in nematode survival was recorded during a 6 h exposure period at 80% and 60% RH, whereas at 45% RH high mortality was observed within 2 h. Addition of the antidesiccant ‘Folicote’ (6% w/w) to the nematode suspension was most effective in ensuring IJ survival at 60% RH, resulting in 38–60% increase in viability during 6 h of exposure. At 80% RH ‘Folicote’ treatment resulted in only 10–20% increase in IJs viability, as compared with non‐treated IJs. At 45% RH, ‘Folicote’ treatment did not significantly increase IJ survival (P>0.05). Survival of the IJs on tomato and soybean leaves was 30–35% higher than of those recovered from leaves of cotton, pepper and bean as well as from filter paper. At 60% RH, IJ movement ceased within 45–60 min of exposure and the nematode body shrank. However, nematode pathogenicity remained almost unaltered up to 4 h of exposure, resulting in 75% mortality of larvae of the Egyptian cotton worm Spodoptera littoralis. A drastic reduction in the nematodes’ efficacy was recorded when the insects were introduced 6 and 8 h after nematode application.

Norovirus (NoV) is one of the main causative agents of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. In temperate climates, outbreaks peak during the winter season. The mechanism by which climatic factors influence the occurrence of NoV outbreaks is unknown. We hypothesized that humidity is linked to NoV seasonality. Human NoV is not cultivatable, so we used cultivatable murine norovirus (MNV) as a surrogate to study its persistence when exposed to various levels of relative humidity (RH) from low (10% RH) to saturated (100% RH) conditions at 9 and 25°C. In addition, we conducted similar experiments with virus-like particles (VLPs) from the predominant GII-4 norovirus and studied changes in binding patterns to A, B, and O group carbohydrates that might reflect capsid alterations. The responses of MNV and VLP to humidity were somewhat similar, with 10 and 100% RH exhibiting a strong conserving effect for both models, whereas 50% RH was detrimental for MNV infectivity and VLP binding capacity. The data analysis suggested that absolute humidity (AH) rather than RH is the critical factor for keeping NoV infectious, with an AH below 0.007 kg water/kg air being favorable to NoV survival. Retrospective surveys of the meteorological data in Paris for the last 14 years showed that AH average values have almost always been below 0.007 kg water/kg air during the winter (i.e., 0.0046 ± 0.0014 kg water/kg air), and this finding supports the fact that low AH provides an ideal condition for NoV persistence and transmission during cold months.

Field cage experiments were conducted in Riverside, California to quantify the impact of releases of the parasitoid Amitus bennetti Viggiani & Evans on mortality of the whitefly Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring. Single-row 50-m-long plots were planted with either cotton or bean. Cages were erected over the plants in each row, and adult whiteflies were released into the cages. Approximately 10 days later, adult parasitoids were released. Marked individual whiteflies were scored every 4 days for 6 weeks. Paired life tables were then constructed from census data from release and control cages over a single whitefly generation. Total whitefly mortality in release cages (71% in bean, 61% in cotton) was significantly greater than in control cages (25% in bean, 34% in cotton). The marginal rate for mortality attributable directly to the parasitism was 0.535 in the bean plots and 0.201 in the cotton plots. In addition, other mortality was greater in the release plots, possibly reflecting death of parasitized hosts before larval parasitoids could complete development. Parasitism was the greatest mortality factor in the study.

Abstract.  The effect of humidity on the activity of Metarhizium anisopliae IP 46 (Metsch.) Sorokin (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) formulated in sunflower oil against Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) eggs was examined. After exposure of eggs at 75% relative humidity (RH) for ≤ 25 days, ovicidal activity was not increased by oil-in-water formulated conidia, hyphal bodies or pure-oil formulated conidia, compared with conidia or hyphal bodies prepared in water only. At optimal > 98% RH, eclosion was ≤ 13.7% after treatment with oil-in-water formulated propagules in ≤ 10% oil, and it was completely inhibited when conidia were applied in pure oil. At 86–100% RH, new conidia were found on eggs treated with oil-formulated conidia and incubated down to 91% RH. Ovicidal activity was still detected at 93% RH and was augmented with increasing humidity and time of exposure of eggs. Eclosion of larvae was distinctly reduced by IP 46 pure-oil formulated conidia after a minimal initial exposure of 3 days at > 98% RH, followed by: (a) a 12-day exposure at 75% RH before submersion in water; (b) a minimal 5-day exposure at > 98% RH and direct subsequent transfer of treated eggs to water, or (c) a minimal daily 20-h exposure at > 98% RH alternating with 4 h at 75% RH for 10 days. We demonstrate that oil-based formulations of conidia of M. anisopliae enhance ovicidal activity at high humidities and conclude that these formulations have potential in the integrated control of Ae. aegypti .

The effect of both moisture and temperature on the infective potential of Beauveria bassiana to the Chagas' disease vector, Rhodnius prolixus, was studied under fluctuating regimes. At constant 25 degrees C, contaminated first-instar nymphs exposed to increasing daily periods of initial exposure to 97% RH, followed by transfer to reduced humidity (43, 53, 75, and 86% RH), showed a significant reduction in mortality when the 97% RH exposure time declined from 12 to 8 h per day. The duration of disease incubation depended on the daily 97% RH exposure time. Under fluctuating regimes of both humidity (97% RH versus 75% RH) and temperature (15/28, 20/25, 25/28, and 25/35 degrees C), first-instar mortality was affected by weather conditions, daily 97% RH exposure time (8, 12, and 16 h per day), and number of temperature and humidity fluctuations before transferring tested insects to constant unfavorable conditions. In most cases, at 12/12 h alternating cycles, high and rapid mortality required five cycles. Under these fluctuating regimes, fungus-induced mortality and mortality time were similarly affected in third- and fifth-instar nymphs by the daily 97% RH exposure time. Despite a lower susceptibility of older larval stages, mortality rates in insects exposed for at least 12 h per day at 97% RH remained very high except at 15 degrees C. Moisture and temperature regimes at 12/12 h cycling significantly affected the dose-mortality response in first-instar nymphs. The most favorable conditions consisted of 97%-20 degrees C combined with either 75%-25 degrees C or 43%-25 degrees C. Under less favorable alternating conditions (lower and higher temperatures) the amounts of inoculum required for killing 50% of first-instar nymphs were 10 or 20 times higher. From a vector control standpoint, daily high humidity appears to be the most crucial climatic constraint. B. bassiana has the potential to control R. prolixus populations with applications made during the rainy seasons when humidity is high.

To counteract water loss due to excretion, cuticular transpiration and respiration, various groups of arthropods have developed mechanisms for active uptake of water vapor from unsaturated air. In this study, active uptake capabilities and water loss rates were examined in the various developmental stages of the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis. To determine critical equilibrium humidity, the lowest relative humidity at which active water uptake can occur, pre-desiccated immature and adult fleas were placed in a series of humidity regimes ranging from 44 to 93% RH. Active uptake occurred in larval stages at relative humidities above 53% and in pre-pupae at 75-93% RH. Pupae and adults did not demonstrate active uptake at any humidity. Optimal uptake for larvae occurred between 20 and 30 degrees C. When placed over Drierite (<10% RH), larval and adult stages demonstrated a higher rate of water loss than pre-pupal and pupal stages. Active water uptake is necessary to ensure proper development of the larvae of C. felis. Active uptake ceases after the larval-pupal ecdysis and it appears that adults have lost the ability to actively uptake water.

In two Japanese cicadas, Cryptotympana facialis and Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata , with different habitat distributions, fully developed embryos hatch in response to high humidity due to rainfall. Despite the advantage of hatching on rainy days, this trait burdens embryos with an extra period of desiccation until the unpredictable advent of rain. We compared the ability of the fully developed embryos of these cicadas to endure periods of low humidity. Eggs were exposed to a combination of different humidities (43% and 75% relative humidity, RH) and durations (0–15 days), and then transferred to an environment with 100% RH to stimulate hatching. In both species, total hatching rates decreased as duration increased, although there was no significant effect of humidity. In C. facialis , a considerable proportion of the eggs hatched during the desiccation period, and the hatching rate was higher at 75% RH than at 43% RH. After transfer to 100% RH, most hatching occurred within a day regardless of the desiccation level. In G. nigrofuscata , no nymphs hatched during the desiccation periods. However, more eggs required more than a day after transfer to 100% RH to hatch after desiccation at 43% RH than at 75% RH. Consequently, the overall proportion of timely hatching of eggs (eggs hatching within a day of moisture supply) was higher after desiccation at 43% RH in C. facialis , but it was higher after desiccation at 75% RH in G. nigrofuscata . These different physiological responses of the two species may reflect adaptation to habitat dryness.

The inability to measure humidity during stimulation has so far prevented us from understanding the contribution of moist cells and dry cells to orientation in a gradient of humidity. The problem was solved in the present study by means of a UV-absorption hygrometer that made it possible to monitor humidity at a rate of 100 Hz. The antennal moist and dry cells of the cockroach were exposed to humidities alternatively falling or rising at low rates between -1% RH s(-1) and +1% RH s(-1) (relative humidity). Impulse frequency of both types of cells depended simultaneously on instantaneous humidity and its rate of change. High frequencies of the moist cells signal high humidity. But at a given humidity, the response frequency is higher still when humidity is also rising. Conversely, high frequencies of the dry cell signal low humidity, and frequency is higher still at a given humidity when humidity is also falling. These responses ensure that the cockroach spent a minimum time in environments where desiccation or hydration occur and may thus protect the animal from emerging accidentally from under cover into moving air. In the constant-humidity retreat of the cockroach, fluctuating or even drifting discharge frequencies could serve as an early warning: return!
