ABSTRACT. Female P. americana, reared with males from the time of adult emergence, mated on the 4th–5th day after metamorphosis, produced the first ootheca on the 8th or 9th day, and then produced successive oothecae at intervals of 3.0 days, whereas, only 50% of virgin females had produced their first ootheca by the 28th day after adult emergence. Examination of the ovaries indicated that oocyte development is normal in virgins until shortly after the time when they first become receptive to males. When mating was not allowed there was a dramatic reduction in the rate of vitellogenic growth of the terminal batch of oocytes which persisted until mating was allowed, and was often accompanied by resorption of a percentage of the oocytes. Short-term, in vitro, radiochemical assay of juvenile hormone (JH III) biosynthesis by corpora allata (CA) showed that, in females reared with males, the cycles of ovarian development are accompanied by regular pulses of CA activity. There is a small, possibly preparatory peak of JH III biosynthesis before vitellogenesis of the first wave of oocytes, followed by a larger peak of JH III production during vitellogenesis of this batch of eggs and one peak of CA activity between ovulation of each subsequent wave of oocytes. Activities as low as 0.25 pmol C16JH/CA pair/h and as high as 48.38 pmol/CA pair/h were observed in CA from mated females after the onset of cyclic activity. Stimuli received during mating are somehow responsible for the cyclic activity of the CA, for when females were subjected to enforced virginity the first small peak was normal but the second peak was not fully realized and there was then a gradual decline in CA activity until approximately 2 weeks post-emergence. Thereafter the glands exhibited a more or less constant rate of JH biosynthesis (mean = 3.45 ± 0.32 pmol/CA pair/h.) When females were mated after 21 days of enforced virginity the activity of the CA was enhanced. By 48 h after mating the mean glandular activity was at least four times that found in virgins of the same age, and by 72 h rates as high as 40 pmol/CA pair/h were observed. This was followed by normal cyclic activity of the CA. The increase in rate of JH biosynthesis appears to result in a recommencement of oocyte development in these ‘delayed-mated’ females.  相似文献

Using rats (Wistar strain) of our own breed, we studied dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (E.C. 1.14.17.1) (DBH) activity in the plasma of animals of different ages (in correlation to sex) under normal conditions and after exposure to altitude hypoxia (corresponding to 7000 or 9000 m and lasting 20 min). The enzyme was determined by the method of Kato et al. (1974). We found that the given plasma enzyme activity was significantly higher in females than in males, throughout the whole life-span. In addition, we found that minimum activity was reached on about the 14th and 21st day of postnatal life and again on the 40th day, while maximum activity was recorded at the ages of 5, 30 and 35 days and in adult rats. In adult animals (males and females), exposure to altitude hypoxia was followed by a statistically significant increase in plasma DBH activity, which was much more pronounced in females than in males. In males, 240 min after terminating hypoxia plasma DBH activity had returned to normal, but in females it was still significantly raised; after 48 h, plasma DBH activity in females was identical to the activity before exposure to hypoxia. In rats aged 5 and 35 days, hypoxia evoked a fluctuating response. A decrease in activity immediately after terminating hypoxia was followed at 60 min by a return to normal, but at 240 min there was again a significant decrease. In 21-day-old rats, hypoxia did not induce any significant change in plasma DBH activity (the initial activity level in this group was very low).  相似文献

ABSTRACT. In a laboratory study of adult carrot fly activity, observations were made on caged populations and on individuals isolated in actographs. In cages in LD 12:12, feeding, oviposition, flight and possibly mating were all rhythmic. Peak feeding occurred within 1 h from lights-on and peak oviposition and flight 10–12 h later. Mating frequency increased slightly in the latter half of the light phase. In actographs in LD 12:12, peak activity also occurred 10–12 h after lights-on. Activity increased with age up to at least 5 days old, independently of the effects of starvation, and by day 5 males were approximately 3 times and females 8 times more active than on the day of emergence. Overall, males were approximately 1.4 times more active than females. Females isolated in actographs for 4 days in continuous dim light showed peaks of activity at intervals of approximately 22.5 h, and activity therefore appears to be a true circadian rhythm. In continuous bright light the activity of females became arrhythmic.  相似文献

The date of the beginning of mating behaviour in males and females, the rate of insemination and the increasing of bloodsucking activity of females were studied in natural environments. Over 80% of females mated on the 3-4th day after emergence; after fertilization their behaviour changed from looking for males for coupling to looking for ones for a prey. The male swarming began on the 5th day after emergence and simultaneously the appearance of inseminated females was observed. The places of mating of males and females were investigated. It was established that coupling took place in swarms with swarming males and out of swarms with freely flying males.  相似文献

Juvenile hormone (JH) esterase was characterized from the plasma of adult females of the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni, and compared with that present in 4th and 5th instar larvae. Ester hydrolysis was the principal route of JH metabolism. Gel filtration of plasma resolved a single peak of JH esterase which was distinct from that of the α-naphthyl acetate (α-NA) esterase activity. The JH esterase apparent molecular weight was 62,000 in prepupae and virgin, female adults and 69,000 in 2-day-old 4th instar larvae. Broad range isoelectric focusing of plasma of prepupae and adults resolved a major peak of activity at pH 5.5 with a minor peak of activity at pH 6.1 and in 4th instar larvae at pH 5.45 and 5.8, respectively. By this method JH esterase was resolved from the α-NA esterase activity. The plasma of prepupae and adults metabolized JH I at about twice the rate of JH III. JH esterase activity from adult plasma was more stable than the α-NA esterase activity. Adult JH esterase activity was insensitive to inhibition by O,O-diisopropyl phosphorofluoridate in contrast to that of the α-NA esterase activity. Mated females oviposited 8 times more eggs than virgin females to 10 days after emergence. The total haemolymph protein content of virgin females remained high throughout the period of study whereas mated females showed a significant decline beginning on day 4. JH esterase activity remained unchanged in virgins whereas it declined drastically in mated females. The α-NA esterase activity declined to low levels shortly after emergence in both groups. JH and α-NA esterase activity was not affected by the application of the juvenoid, (RS)-methoprene. The present study provides evidence of a functional role for JH esterase in JH metabolism and reproduction in adult T. ni. JH esterases in the adult were identical to that of prepupae by the methods described above.  相似文献

In virgin females neurosecretory activity increased immediately after feeding. This is probably related to gut stretching. After one hour NSC numbers decreased until 48 hr after feeding. Thereafter NSC numbers showed oscillations until the 10th day. During this period rapid blood digestion takes place. The peak in NSC numbers found on the 10th day can be related to high O2 consumption and high protease activity. The peak in NSC number on the 14th day is possibly related to gut epithelial-cell proliferation. In mated and starved females no changes in NSC numbers could be found. Only when these females were fed, a marked increase in NSC was observed. A rise in NSC numbers observed during the period 5 to 15 days after mating could be related to oögenesis. Egg laying stimulated NS activity. It was found that certain types of NSC were connected with this phenomenon. A scheme is suggested to explain the interrelationship between the NSC in the CNS and physiological phenomena.  相似文献

The haemolymph JH III titres in solitarious and gregarious adult desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria, were examined in relation to corpus allatum (CA) volumes, aggregation-maturation pheromone production in males and oocyte growth in females. The JH titres of gregarious females were generally higher than those of solitarious females at all ages studied. The titre patterns, however, were similar: relatively high on day 10, dropping to low levels between days 20 and 25, before rising again by day 25. In the solitarious males, the JH titre was very low on day 10 after fledging, but increased gradually and reached a maximal amount on day 30. The JH titre in gregarious males was low on day 10, elevated on day 15 coinciding with the start of the production of the pheromone, and dropped to a relatively low level on day 20 around the time of maximal pheromone production, then rising again by day 25. These results suggest that biosynthesis of the pheromone is associated with a high JH titre peak in the haemolymph. Although a clear relationship was found during the first gonadotropic cycle between JH titres, on one hand, and CA volume and oocyte growth, on the other, in both phases, no such correlation could be discerned in the second cycle.  相似文献

采用试验室单管观察记录的方法,对3,4,5日龄野生型黑腹果蝇Drosophila melanogaster Meigenw1118成虫每日活动节律进行研究。试验将果蝇活动划分为强活动(飞行和爬行)、弱活动(梳理、觅食等原地发生的运动)和静息(身体不发生移动的休息)3种类型。强活动和弱活动之和为总运动。研究结果显示,野生型黑腹果蝇w1118的昼夜活动表现为明显的双峰模态,晨峰和晚峰分别处于开、关灯前后;雌、雄果蝇总体活动无差异,关灯(18:30)前后雌蝇活动稍强于雄蝇,开灯(6:30)前后则相反;果蝇强活动的节律与总运动基本一致,而弱活动节律不明显;静息节律为单峰模式,其高峰期位于夜间1:00~5:00;雌蝇的静息活动显著多于雄蝇(P<0·05)。  相似文献

As in many Lepidoptera, Plutella xylostella adults do not feed on protein and females must use accumulated reserves to supply vitellogenin synthesis. Storage proteins were quantified in females and males from the late larval stage through day 4 of adult life. The level of storage protein peaked in the early pupal stage, with females having about twice as much as males. In males, the level fell through pupal development and dropped to a trace by one day after eclosion. In females, level of storage proteins fell until eclosion, and then rose dramatically within four hours after the molt to about 2/3 of the original peak level. This post-eclosion increase, which has not been reported previously in insects, suggests that adult females synthesize hexamerins to resequester amino acids. Subsequently, the level of storage proteins fell as vitellogenin appeared and eggs were laid. The ability to synthesize and sequester amino acids as storage proteins during the adult stage has wide-ranging implication for protein management in insects, particularly those that are long-lived and have flexible schedules of reproduction.  相似文献

The effect of acute hypoxia on mouse embryogenesis and its influence on the sex ratio in the progeny was studied. On the 7th--10th day of pregnancy mice were subjected to hypoxia at 230 mm HG for 3 hours. They were sacrificed on the 18th day of pregnancy, and gonads of their embryos were taken for investigation. The sex ratio was determined as the ratio of the number of males to that of females. It has been shown that acute hypoxia on the 7th--10th days of pregnancy, resulting in high mortality of adult animals, had no substantial effect on the embryonic development. No selective death of the embryos of either sex was observed both in experimental and control groups.  相似文献

豆野螟Marucavitrata(Fabricius)是一种严重的泛热带豆类蔬菜害虫。在不同温度,光周期14L∶10D,相对湿度75%~80%条件下,研究豆野螟成虫日龄对交尾的影响及雄蛾对性信息素的EAG反应。不同日龄雌蛾与3日龄雄蛾的交尾,交尾率随蛾龄增加呈下降趋势;不同日龄雄蛾与3日龄雌蛾交尾,交尾率随蛾龄增加呈升高趋势;相同日龄成蛾,交尾率先升后降。不同日龄雌蛾交尾百分率的下降在较高温环境比在较低温环境更加显著;但环境温度对不同日龄雄蛾的交尾却没有太大的影响;相同日龄成蛾3日龄以后的交尾在较高温环境下下降的更快。不同日龄雌蛾的交尾研究中,随着雌蛾日龄的增加,交尾持续时间明显延长;不同日龄雄蛾的交尾研究中,较低日龄和较高日龄雄蛾交尾时的持续时间较长。在较低温环境下所有试验各日龄的持续时间均有所延长。不同日龄雌蛾(雄蛾)与3日龄雄蛾(雌蛾)的交尾和相对应的雄蛾对雌蛾性信息素的EAG反应基本一致,说明雄蛾的反应在交尾行为的完成中具有重要的作用。  相似文献

Some physiological effects of estragole under a single intraperitoneal injection in oil solution were studied in GR mice; elevation of blood aminotransferases activity, body temperature and animals lethality were registered. At a dose of 600 mg/kg, estragole killed 100% sucklings of both sexes and 90% adult females but no any adult male. The males aquire resistance to estragole at the time of maturation. Exogenous testosterone administered at the dose of 50 mg/kg 4-2 days earlier increases the resistance of female mice to estragole up to its level in males. However, neonatally androgenized females are as sensitive to the toxic action of estragole as the males. At the dose of 900 mg/kg, estragole defeats adult males as well: significant elevation of aminotransferase activities in their blood is indicative of this. In this case, the enzyme activity reaches its peak after 2-3 days, not at the 1st day as in the case of carbon tetrachloride administration. We have discovered a strong hypothermic effect of estragole which appears to be unrelated to its hepatotoxicity and testosteron level.  相似文献

The effect of separation of rat pups from lactating females at different time after birth (at the 18th, 21st, 30th, 36th or 43rd day) and stress exposed at the day of the experiment (at the 75th day of life) or twice (at the day of weaning and at the day of the experiment) on activities of membrane-bound (invertase, alkaline phosphatase, aminopeptidase M) and predominantly intracellular (glycyl-L-leucine dipeptidase) enzymes was studied in different parts of intestine of rats (males and females). A change of the enzyme activities has been shown for the first time in the animals separated from lactating females not only at early time, which has already been known, but also at later time, in comparison with their activities in the animals weaned at usual time, at the 30th day of life. The preliminary stress of rat pups at the day of separation from lactating females promotes in many cases a reduction of the response to the stress, to which the animal is exposed in the adult period of life. Abstract: Despite outnumbering their temperate counterparts, tropical snake species have been poorly studied. Yet, the few tropical species that have been studied show a variety of behavioural traits beyond those described in temperate species. Here we reveal both age and sexual differences in the movements of tropical green pythons (Morelia viridis: Pythonidae). We radio‐tracked 27 individuals (17 females and 10 males) for up to 18 months, locating individuals during both the day and night. The home range size for adult females (mean ± SE of 6.21 ± 1.85 ha) was correlated with snout–vent length. Neither adult males nor juveniles had a stable home range. Adult females had stable home ranges that overlapped considerably with those of other females and yellow individuals. Multiple radio‐tracked adult males passed through the territory of radio‐tracked adult females during the study. Females of all sizes were more likely to change position each day than males. There were no differences between the sexes or size categories in the distances moved in most months, although the variation in movement distances was higher in the dry season than during the wet season. In the wet season (January–March) movement distances increased and these were size‐ and sex‐related. This increased activity may be associated with mate searching. Males of M. viridis may maximize their rate of encountering mature females by roaming rather than maintaining a home range. Juvenile green pythons moved distances equal to adult snakes in most months despite their comparatively small size.  相似文献

Adult male mice were given doses of 200 rad acute X-irradiation and mated at intervals to hybrid females over the next 9 weeks. Testis weights fell to 44% of normal during the 5th week and were still subnormal when observations ended in the 10th week. Epididymal-sperm counts fell in the 4th week (after a peak in the 3rd) and were very low in the 6th and 7th weeks, though still above zero. This reduction was followed by high frequencies of pre-implantation loss in females mated to these males and dissected on the 12th day of gestation. Examination of eggs 1–2 days after ovulation showed that there was also a sharp decrease (from the normal level of almost 100%) in the fertilization index, no eggs being fertilized in some females while others showed an intermediate rate. It was concluded that much of the pre-implantation loss really stemmed from non-fertilization rather than from zygotic death. This possibility has already been envisaged by Bateman and others, and reinforces the belief that an index of dominant lethality based on post implantation death should be used whenever the mutagenic treatment is likely to induce much germ-cell killing. The data suggested that reduced fertilization is likely to occur in mice whenever sperm counts fall to less than 10% normal.  相似文献

Natural Killer activity assessed by 51Cr release assay from K-562 cells showed detectable activity from 5th day after tumour transplantation, reaching a peak on 12th day and thereafter showing a gradual decline in the activity. Antibody dependent cell mediated cytotoxicity estimated by 51Cr labelled sheep red blood cells anti SRBC system demonstrated a peak activity on 5th day. Cytotoxic T lymphocyte activity detected by 51Cr release of Dalton's lymphoma ascites target cells showed a peak on 10th day. Sex-dependent differences in corticosteroid binding were assessed in individual pituitaries from adult male and female rats that had been adrenalectomized 12 h before sacrifice. Soluble binding was assayed in duplicate on LH-20 columns. Gonadally intact females showed significantly less 3H-dexamethasone binding than did intact males (p less than 0.01). This difference was confirmed in a second study (p less than .001). However, when ovariectomized females were compared with gondadectomized males, there was no difference in receptor concentration. Estrogen was able to reverse the effect of ovariectomy: ovariectomized females receiving estrogen (10 micrograms/rat/day) had significantly fewer receptors than intact males; p less than 0.01). Progesterone (500 micrograms/rat/day) did not antagonize the effect of estrogen in the pituitary. A sex difference was also found in the Type I (mineralocorticoid) receptor subpopulation which comprised approximately 10% of the total receptors, with females having fewer receptors than males. These results demonstrate that in the pituitary, the level of functional corticosteroid receptors is subject to a 20% down-regulation by circulating levels of estrogen. This raises the possibility that the lower number of receptors in females may act to reduce their sensitivity to the negative feedback effects of glucocorticoids at the level of the pituitary.  相似文献

【目的】为了明确酪蝇Piophila casei的羽化节律和交配行为,为深入研究酪蝇的性信息素打下基础。【方法】在室内条件[温度(27±1)℃,光周期L︰D=14︰10]下观察了酪蝇的羽化节律和交配行为。【结果】结果表明,化蛹后第8天成虫羽化最多,羽化高峰期出现在由暗期进入光期的前后,雄虫略早于雌虫羽化。观察结果表明,当雄虫接近蛹壳时会表现出"触摸"、"经过"、"扑"、"抱握"等动作,而雌虫仅有"触摸"、"抱握"的动作。当遇到同性成虫或者已交配雌虫时,雄虫会"追逐"对方,当接触到对方时雄虫会表现出"抱握"、"触摸"动作以进行识别,被识别雄虫会"翘起腹部末端"使对方离开,已交配雌虫则猛烈"摆动身体"使对方离开。当遇到处女雌虫时,雄虫跳跃到雌虫背上迅速进行交配。雌虫羽化后1 min即可交配,雄虫羽化后30 min可交配,交配平均持续时间10 min。雄虫间会有交配竞争行为发生,后来者会跳跃到先来者背上,向下弯曲腹部试图越过先来者与雌虫交配。【结论】酪蝇的羽化高峰出现在进入光期前后。成虫对蛹壳有显著趋性,雄虫主动追逐识别异性,较雌虫表现出更强烈的交配欲望。  相似文献

Schistosoma japonicum (Chinese strain) adult worm pairs (10-12 weeks old) were fixed in 4 degrees C absolute acetone or neutral buffered formalin either immediately after recovery from mice, or following incubation for 0.5 or 1.0 h. Males and females were incubated individually in Earle's balanced salt solution at 37 degrees C. Lipase activity was determined in frozen sections by Gomori's method using Tween 80 as substrate. In unincubated males, lipase activity was localized only in the parenchyma; in females it was present in the vitellaria and parenchyma subjacent to the tegument. After 0.5 h incubation, males showed less lipase activity in the parenchyma than unincubated males, and females showed increased activity in the parenchyma subjacent to the tegument, but not in the vitellaria. Following 1.0 h incubation, males showed less lipase activity than previously, and females showed a marked increase in activity, particularly in the parenchyma subjacent to the tegument.  相似文献
