We tested integrative bottom-up and top-down trophic cascade hypotheses with manipulative experiments in a tropical wet forest, using the ant-plant Piper cenocladum and its associated arthropod community. We examined enhanced nutrients and light along with predator and herbivore exclusions as sources of variation in the relative biomass of plants, their herbivores (via rates of herbivory), and resident predaceous ants. The combined manipulations of secondary consumers, primary consumers, and plant resources allowed us to examine some of the direct and indirect effects on each trophic level and to determine the relative contributions of bottom-up and top-down cascades to the structure of the community. We found that enhanced plant resources (nutrients and light) had direct positive effects on plant biomass. However, we found no evidence of indirect (cascading through the herbivores) effects of plant biomass on predators or top predators. In contrast, ants had indirect effects on plant biomass by decreasing herbivory on the plants. This top-down cascade occurred whether or not plant resources were enriched, conditions which are expected to modify top-down forces. Received: 9 August 1998 / Accepted: 1 December 1998  相似文献

The complex interactions between primary producers, herbivores, carnivores, and detritivores have resulted in the burgeoning field of trophic dynamics. One important contribution is the Fretwell and Oksanen theory (FO theory). The FO theory proposes that the productivity of the environment determines the length of the trophic chain, which, they suggest, is directly related to whether the system is being controlled by top-down forces (odd numbered length of trophic chain) or bottom-up forces (even numbered length of trophic chain). Recent evidence from experiments by L.H. Fraser and J.P. Grime claims to support the FO theory but the methodology has been criticised by D.C. Moon, P. Stiling and M.V. Cattell for hidden treatments and pseudoreplication. We reject these criticisms and recommend an approach to the study of trophic dynamics involving the aggregation of organisms into functional groups, direct quantitative measurements of trophic processes using field manipulations, inferences based upon the use of field probes and synthesis of ecosystems in closed microcosms. Prey diversity is thought to mediate the strength of top-down and bottom-up effects, but few experiments directly test this hypothesis. I assembled food webs of bacteria and bacterivorous protist prey in laboratory microcosms with all combinations of five productivity levels, two top predator treatments (present or absent), and three prey compositions. Depauperate food chains contained one of two edible prey species, while more diverse food webs contained both edible prey species plus two additional less-edible/inedible prey. Equilibrium theory predicts that prey diversity should weaken the top-down and bottom-up effects on trophic level biomasses, due to density compensation among prey species. Top-down effects should increase with productivity in food chains, but decrease with productivity in food webs. Results revealed highly dynamic top-down effects, the strength of which varied more over time than among treatments. Further, top-down effects did not merely vary in absolute strength over time, but also in relative strength across different prey compositions and productivity levels. It might be expected that equilibrium models would qualitatively reproduce time-averaged results. However, time-averaged data largely failed to support equilibrium predictions. This failure may reflect strong temporal variability in treatment effects combined with nonlinear density dependence of species' per-capita growth rates. Strong temporal variability in the strength of top-down effects has not previously been demonstrated, but likely is common in nature as well.  相似文献

The relative importance of resources (bottom-up forces) and natural enemies (top-down forces) for regulating food web dynamics has been debated, and both forces have been found to be critical for determining food web structure. How the relative importance of top-down and bottom-up forces varies between sites with different abiotic conditions is not well understood. Using the pitcher plant inquiline community as a model system, I examine how the relative importance of top-down and bottom-up effects differs between two disparate sites. Resources (ant carcasses) and top predators (mosquito larvae) were manipulated in two identical 4 × 4 factorial press experiments, conducted at two geographically distant sites (Michigan and Florida) within the range of the purple pitcher plant, Sarracenia purpurea, and the aquatic community that resides in its leaves. Overall, top predators reduced the density of prey populations while additional resources bolstered them, and the relative importance of top-down and bottom-up forces varied between sites and for different trophic levels. Specifically, top-down effects on protozoa were stronger in Florida than in Michigan, while the opposite pattern was found for rotifers. These findings experimentally demonstrate that the strength of predator–prey interactions, even those involving the same species, vary across space. While only two sites are compared in this study, I hypothesize that site differences in temperature, which influences metabolic rate, may be responsible for variation in consumer–resource interactions. These findings warrant further investigation into the specific factors that modify the relative importance of top-down and bottom-up effects.  相似文献

The extent to which ecosystems are regulated by top-down relative to bottom-up control has been a dominant paradigm in ecology for many decades. For lakes, it has been shown that predation by fish is an important determinant of variation in zooplankton and phytoplankton community characteristics. Effects of fish are expected to not only be a function of total fish biomass, but also of functional composition of the fish community. Previous research on the importance of trophic cascades in lakes has largely focused on the role of zooplanktivorous and piscivorous fish. We conducted a large-scale multiple-lake fish community manipulation experiment to test for the effect of differences in fish functional community composition on the trophic structure of lakes. We examine the effect of top-down and bottom-up factors on phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass as well as on their community composition. We put our data in a broader perspective by comparing our results to data of a survey that also included ponds with low fish densities as well as ponds with very high densities of fish. Our results indicate that the overall food web structure under relative high fish densities is primarily structured by bottom-up factors, whereas community characteristics seem to be primarily regulated by top-down factors. Our results suggest a subtle interplay between bottom-up and top-down factors, in which bottom-up factors dominate in determining quantities while top-down effects are important in determining identities of the communities.  相似文献

The pathways linking consumer effects to primary productivity (PPR) are likely to vary among taxa because of species-specific trophic and functional differences. Thus, it is necessary to understand the dynamics of consumer–PPR interactions so that effects of species loss on ecosystem function can be addressed from a mechanistic approach. In this study, I used three fish taxa (orangethroat darter, Etheostoma spectabile; western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis; and bullhead minnow, Pimephales vigilax) as model consumers with different trophic and functional characteristics to test alternative mechanisms for consumer regulation of PPR (i.e., trophic cascade, terrestrial nutrient translocation, and sedimentary nutrient translocation). Experiments were conducted in stream mesocosms fitted with a combination of fish and terrestrial insect barriers to address relative importance of consumer-driven top-down and bottom-up control of PPR. A predatory invertivore, orangethroat darter, increased PPR through an apparent trophic cascade by localized reduction of benthic grazing invertebrate densities (i.e., top-down). A surface feeding insectivore, western mosquitofish, consumed terrestrial insects on the stream surface, increasing PPR by enhancing allochthonous nutrients in the mesocosms (i.e., bottom-up). A benthic omnivore, bullhead minnow, consumed benthic food items, resulting in increased PPR by enhancing availability of autochthonous nutrients via translocation of sedimentary nutrients (i.e., bottom-up). However, under specific environmental contexts, this species also consumed terrestrial invertebrates, potentially affecting PPR through terrestrial nutrient translocation as well. In this study, the trophic and functional characteristics of different species resulted in alternative pathways that increased PPR, suggesting that in natural ecosystems multiple consumer-driven pathways may be influencing PPR simultaneously and could potentially be important for temporal persistence of ecosystem function in changing environments.  相似文献

Top-down and bottom-up controls are hypothesized to regulate population structures in many ecosystems. However, few studies have had the opportunity to analyze both processes in the natural environment, especially on large carnivores like the cougar (Puma concolor). Previously, studies show that cougar diet in the Sierra Nanchititla Natural Reserve (SNNR), central Mexico, is mainly armadillo, coati, and white-tailed deer. We assess whether top-down and/or bottom-up control regulate this endangered food web: (a) we predicted that seasonal per capita changes in abundance (pca) of cougar will be positively affected by the abundance of their main prey; (b) primary productivity in SNNR will affect the pca of prey species, driving bottom-up control; and (c) armadillo, coati, and white-tailed deer pca will be affected by the abundance of cougar, generating top-down control. Using 15 camera traps for 6 years in the SNNR, we calculated a relative abundance index (RAI) and pca for cougar and each of the focal prey, and we used the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) as a proxy of primary productivity. We constructed multiple regression models and selected the best linear models based on ranking the AICc values. Our analysis suggests that P. concolor pca is best explained by bottom-up control and intraspecific feedback. White-tailed deer and armadillo pca were both significantly affected by cougar abundance, indicating top-down control for these prey species, but NDVI was not retained in any of the models selected for prey pca. Our results indicate that both bottom-up and top-down control are involved in regulating this endangered food web in the SNNR, Mexico.  相似文献

Tree species-rich forests are hypothesised to be less susceptible to insect herbivores, but so far herbivory–diversity relationships have rarely been tested for tree saplings, and no such study has been published for deciduous forests in Central Europe. We expected that diverse tree communities reduce the probability of detection of host plants and increase abundance of predators, thereby reducing herbivory. We examined levels of herbivory suffered by beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and maple saplings (Acer pseudoplatanus L. and Acer platanoides L.) across a tree species diversity gradient within Germany’s largest remaining deciduous forest area, and investigated whether simple beech or mixed stands were less prone to damage caused by herbivorous insects. Leaf area loss and the frequency of galls and mines were recorded for 1,040 saplings (>13,000 leaves) in June and August 2006. In addition, relative abundance of predators was assessed to test for potential top-down control. Leaf area loss was generally higher in the two species of maple compared to beech saplings, while only beech showed a decline in damage caused by leaf-chewing herbivores across the tree diversity gradient. No significant patterns were found for galls and mines. Relative abundance of predators on beech showed a seasonal response and increased on species-rich plots in June, suggesting higher biological control. We conclude that, in temperate deciduous forests, herbivory–tree diversity relationships are significant, but are tree species-dependent with bottom-up and top-down control as possible mechanisms. In contrast to maple, beech profits from growing in a neighbourhood of higher tree richness, which implies that species identity effects may be of greater importance than tree diversity effects per se. Hence, herbivory on beech appeared to be mediated bottom-up by resource concentration in the sampled forest stands, as well as regulated top-down through biocontrol by natural enemies. We investigated the effects of predator diet breadth on the relative importance of bottom-up and top-down control of prey assemblages, using microbial food webs containing bacteria, bacterivorous protists and rotifers, and two different top predators. The experiment used a factorial design that independently manipulated productivity and the presence or absence of two top predators with different diet breadths. Predators included a "specialist" predatory ciliate Euplotes aediculatus, which was restricted to feeding on small prey, and a "generalist" predatory ciliate Stentor coeruleus, which could feed on the entire range of prey sizes. Both total prey biomass and prey diversity increased with productivity in the predator-free control and specialist predator treatments, a pattern consistent with bottom-up control, but both remained unchanged by productivity in the generalist predator treatment, a pattern consistent with top-down control. Linear food chain models adequately described responses in the generalist predator treatment, whereas food web models incorporating edible and inedible prey (which can coexist in the absence of predators) adequately described responses in the specialist predator treatment. These results suggest that predator diet breadth can play an important role in modulating the relative strength of bottom-up and top-down forces in ecological communities.  相似文献

 Energy-balanced steady-state models of the fringing and barrier reefs of Tiahura, Moorea Island, French Polynesia, are presented. A total of 43 and 46 trophic groups were identified on the two reef habitats respectively. The models’ outputs indicate that most of the substantial primary productivity is processed and recycled (59–69% of NPP) in the web through detritus based, microbially mediated food webs, with a substantial but secondary flux through grazer-based webs. This mechanism produces long pathways with low trophic efficiencies at the higher trophic levels. The trophic structure of both reef habitats efficiently conserves energy and materials within the reef ecosystem through two forms of internal recycling: a relatively large cycle produced through detritus and a microbial food web, and a relatively short one directly produced through predation. The relative roles of top-down and bottom-up forces in affecting disease prevalence in wild hosts is important for understanding disease dynamics and human disease risk. We found that the prevalence of Sin Nombre virus (SNV), the agent of a severe disease in humans (hantavirus pulmonary syndrome), in island deer mice from the eight California Channel Islands was greater with increased precipitation (a measure of productivity), greater island area, and fewer species of rodent predators. In finding a strong signal of the ecological forces affecting SNV prevalence, our work highlights the need for future work to understand the relative importance of average rodent density, population fluctuations, behavior, and specialist predators as they affect SNV prevalence. In addition to illustrating the importance of both bottom-up and top-down limitation of disease prevalence, our results suggest that predator richness may have important bearing on the risk of exposure to animal-borne diseases that affect humans.  相似文献

Species distributions, and thus the composition of communities, are determined by many interacting biotic and abiotic factors. We analyzed the variation in composition of the invertebrate predator guild across eight small, steep coastal streams in eastern Canada, in relation to variation in several broad categories of environmental variables: disturbance-related physical characteristics, top-down effects (fish), and bottom-up effects (prey composition and productivity-related physical/chemical variables). Similarity in composition (relative and absolute abundances of the 19 species belonging to the Rhyacophilidae, Perlodidae, and Chloroperlidae) declined significantly with distance. Streams that were most similar in predator composition were also most similar in physical factors related to disturbance, but were not more similar in prey abundance/composition or in environmental factors associated with productivity (chemistry, canopy cover, and riparian forest type). Similarity in the relative abundance of species within the Rhyacophilidae was linked to variation in the presence/abundance of brook trout. These results suggest that the invertebrate predator guilds of these small coastal streams are structured first and foremost by factors associated with the magnitude and variability of the flow regime, and second by response to top-down factors (predation by brook trout). It has been argued that widespread extinctions of top predators have changed terrestrial ecosystem structures through mesopredator release, where increased abundances of medium-sized predators have detrimental effects on prey communities. This top-down concept has received much attention within conservation biology, but few studies have demonstrated the phenomenon. The concept has been criticized since alternative explanations involving bottom-up impacts from bioclimatic effects on ecosystem productivity and from anthropogenic habitat change are rarely considered. We analyse the response of a mesopredator (the red fox) to declines in top predators (wolf and Eurasian lynx) and agricultural expansion over 90 years in Sweden, taking bioclimatic effects into account. We show a top-down mesopredator release effect, but ecosystem productivity determined its strength. The impacts of agricultural activity were mediated by their effects on top predator populations. Thus, both top-down and bottom-up processes need to be understood for effective preservation of biodiversity in anthropogenically transformed ecosystems.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to address the top-down and bottom-up controls on different microbial web components (bacterioplankton, picophytoplankton, and >3 μm phytoplankton) in an Antarctic lake. Two experiments using a size fractionation approach and nutrient addition were conducted at microcosm scale (2.5 l). The variation in net growth rates (k′) of bacterioplankton and phytoplankton size fractions was analyzed after 5 days. The results determined significant differences; whereas bacterioplankton and large phytoplankton showed an increase in their k′ when their predators were removed, the picophytoplankton showed a decrease. All the studied plankton components presented the highest k′ when nutrients were added. It is suggested that, in this lake, both the top-down and bottom-up regulations account for the regulation of bacterioplankton and large phytoplankton. As for picophytoplankton, the bottom-up control was evident and grazing did not pose a negative impact and rather, had a positive effect probably due to liberation of nutrients.  相似文献

Traditionally, marine ecosystem structure was thought to be determined by phytoplankton dynamics. However, an integrated view on the relative roles of top-down (consumer-driven) and bottom-up (resource-driven) forcing in large-scale, exploited marine ecosystems is emerging. Long time series of scientific survey data, underpinning the management of commercially exploited species such as cod, are being used to diagnose mechanisms that could affect the composition and relative abundance of species in marine food webs. By assembling published data from studies in exploited North Atlantic ecosystems, we found pronounced geographical variation in top-down and bottom-up trophic forcing. The data suggest that ecosystem susceptibility to top-down control and their resiliency to exploitation are related to species richness and oceanic temperature conditions. Such knowledge could be used to produce ecosystem guidelines to regulate and manage fisheries in a sustainable fashion.  相似文献

To maximize the productivity of virginiamycin, which is a commercially important antibiotic as an animal feed additive, an empirical approach was employed in the batch culture of Streptomyces virginiae. Here, the effects of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration and agitation speed on the maximum cell concentration at the production phase, as well as on the productivity of virginiamycin, were investigated. To maintain the DO concentration in the fermentor at a certain level, either the agitation speed or the inlet oxygen concentration of the supply gas was manipulated. It was found that increasing the agitation speed had a positive effect on the antibiotic productivity independent of the DO concentration. The optimum DO concentration, agitation speed and addition of an autoregulator, virginiae butanolide C (VB-C), were determined to maximize virginiamycin productivity. The optimal strategy was to start the cultivation at 450 rpm and to continue until the DO concentration reached 80%. After reaching 80%, the DO concentration was maintained at this level by changing the agitation speed, up to a maximum of 800 rpm. The addition of an optimal amount of the autoregulator VB-C in an experiment resulted in the maximal production of virginiamycin M (399 mg/l), which was about 1.8-fold those obtained previously. Whether resources (bottom-up forces), natural enemies (top-down forces), or both, determine the abundance of insect herbivore populations in plant–insect herbivore–natural enemy systems remains a major issue in population ecology. Unlike recent surveys of the tritrophic literature we do not seek to quantify whether top-down or bottom-up forces predominate in any given set of experimental systems. Acknowledging the dearth of empirical synthesis we employ two contrasting literature surveys to determine whether the plant–insect herbivore–natural enemy literature is currently adequate to form a conceptual synthesis of the relative roles of top-down and bottom-up forces. The emergence of a synthesis of the relative roles of top-down and bottom-up forces in plant–insect herbivore–natural enemy systems appears to have been largely prevented by (1) the absence of appropriate empirical data; (2) failure to appreciate the merits of existing data; (3) a continued desire to emphasise either top-down or bottom-up forces to the exclusion of the other; and (4) confusion regarding which processes regulate and which influence the abundance of insect herbivores.  相似文献

There is a lack of scientific consensus about how top-down and bottom-up forces interact to structure terrestrial ecosystems. This is especially true for systems with large carnivore and herbivore species where the effects of predation versus food limitation on herbivores are controversial. Uncertainty exists whether top-down forces driven by large carnivores are common, and if so, how their influences vary with predator guild composition and primary productivity. Based on data and information in 42 published studies from over a 50-year time span, we analyzed the composition of large predator guilds and prey densities across a productivity gradient in boreal and temperate forests of North America and Eurasia. We found that predation by large mammalian carnivores, especially sympatric gray wolves (Canis lupus) and bears (Ursus spp.), apparently limits densities of large mammalian herbivores. We found that cervid densities, measured in deer equivalents, averaged nearly six times greater in areas without wolves compared to areas with wolves. In areas with wolves, herbivore density increased only slightly with increasing productivity. These predator effects are consistent with the exploitation ecosystems hypothesis and appear to occur across a broad range of net primary productivities. Results are also consistent with theory on trophic cascades, suggesting widespread and top-down forcing by large carnivores on large herbivores in forest biomes across the northern hemisphere. These findings have important conservation implications involving not only the management of large carnivores but also that of large herbivores and plant communities.  相似文献

A recently developed methodology for the characterization of complex proteomes, top-down Fourier transform mass spectrometry (FTMS), is applied for the first time to a plant proteome, that of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Of the 3000 proteins predicted by the genome sequence, 97 were recently identified in two separate "bottom-up" mass spectrometry studies in which the proteins were purified and digested and in which the mass spectrometry-measured mass values of the resulting peptides matched against those expected from the DNA-predicted proteins. In the top-down approach applied here, molecular ions from a protein mixture are purified, weighed exactly (+/-1 Da), and fragmented in the FTMS. Of the 22 molecular weight values found in three isolated mixtures, 7 were chosen, and their primary structures were fully characterized; in only one case was the bottom-up structure in full agreement. The top-down technique is not only efficient for identification of the DNA-predicted precursors, such as that of a protein present as a 5% mixture component, but also for characterization of the primary structure of the final protein. For two proteins the previously predicted cleavage site for loss of the signal peptide was found to be incorrect. Two 27-kDa proteins are fully characterized, although they are found to differ by only 12 residues and 6 Da in mass in a 3:1 ratio; the bottom-up studies did not distinguish these proteins. Direct tandem mass spectrometry dissociation of two 15-kDa molecular ions showed >90% sequence similarity, whereas three-stage mass spectrometry traced their +14-Da molecular mass discrepancies to an unusual N-methylation on the N-terminal amino group; the bottom-up approach identified only one precursor protein. The high potential of the top-down FTMS approach for characterization as well as identification of complex plant proteomes should provide a real incentive for its further automation.  相似文献
