Sympatric speciation driven by sexual selection by female mate choice on a male trait is a much debated topic. The process is problematic because of the lack of negative frequency-dependent selection that can facilitate the invasion of a novel colour phenotype and stabilize trait polymorphism. It has recently been proposed that male-male competition for mating territories can generate frequency-dependent selection on male colouration. Rare male cichlid fish would enjoy a fitness advantage if territorial defenders bias aggression towards male cichlid fish of their own colour. We used blue (ancestral type) and red phenotypes of the Lake Victoria cichlid species complex Pundamilia. We tested the aggression bias of wild-caught territorial blue male cichlid fish from five separate populations for blue vs. red rival male cichlid fish using simulated intruder choice tests. The different populations vary in the frequency of red male cichlid fish, and in the degree of reproductive isolation between red and blue, reflecting different stages of speciation. Blue male cichlid fish from a population that lack red phenotypes biased aggression towards blue stimulus male cichlid fish. The same was found in two populations where blue and red are reproductively isolated sister species. This aggression bias may facilitate the invasion of a novel colour phenotype and species coexistence. Blue male cichlid fish from two populations where red and blue are hybridizing incipient species biased aggression towards red stimulus male cichlid fish. Thus, after a successful invasion of red, aggression bias alone is not likely to generate frequency dependence required to stabilize the coexistence of phenotypes. The findings show that aggression bias varies between stages of speciation, but is not enough to stabilize the process of speciation.  相似文献

Nocturnal orientation to reefs by late pelagic stage coral reef fishes   总被引:7,自引:1,他引:6  
 The nocturnal orientation behaviour of the late pelagic stages of two reef fish families (Apogonidae and Pomacentridae) was examined using behavioural cages deployed in the field. The behavioural cages enabled the fish to choose between swimming towards or away from the reef in response to natural cues. Overall, 55% of fish displayed a choice in the experiments, however, the proportion varied between the two families, with 67% of pomacentrids and 27% of apogonids displaying a choice. In both families, of the fish which displayed a choice, the proportion of fish swimming towards the reef was significantly greater than 50%, as random movement would predict (64% of pomacentrids and 67% of apogonids swam towards the reef). This proportion did not vary significantly among four field sites with different current regimes and geographic locations. The results suggest that the late pelagic stages of reef fish display nocturnal orientation behaviour, possibly in response to sound, which may aid in their settlement on reefs. Using remote underwater stereo-video systems we examined fish behaviour towards a stationary SCUBA diver at temperate (Rottnest Island) and sub-tropical (Houtman Abrolhos Islands) reefs in Western Australia. Changes in species richness, relative abundance, fish length, and the mean distance of individual fish from stereo-video cameras, in the presence and absence of a SCUBA diver, were assessed to infer changes in behaviour. Results show that a stationary SCUBA diver may obtain accurate measures of species richness and of the composition of fish assemblages in an area. However, the usefulness of these measures to reflect changes in fish behaviour appears limited as responses of fish towards the stationary SCUBA diver were highly species specific. Several species differed in their mean relative abundance (Heterodontus portusjacksoni, Coris auricularis, Thalassoma lunare), length (Ophthalmolepsis lineolatus, C. auricularis), and the distance to which they would approach the stereo-video systems (Kyphosus sydneyanus, Scarus schlegeli) when a SCUBA diver was present. Here, species-specific changes in the behaviour of several common and abundant fish species towards a stationary SCUBA diver advises caution to avoid biases when interpreting results obtained by SCUBA divers.  相似文献

Association preferences and aggression intensity were investigated in relation to kin and familiarity in the self-fertilizing, clonal vertebrate, the mangrove killifish Kryptolebias marmoratus. Results indicated that fish preferentially associated with and exhibited less intense aggression towards members of their own genotype (kin), compared to members of a different genotype (non-kin). Furthermore, when fish were presented with stimulus groups of the same genotype that were familiar or unfamiliar, fish preferentially associated with and exhibited lower aggression intensity directed towards familiar groups. These results indicate that this species prefer to associate with both kin and familiar individuals and modulate aggression accordingly. These results are discussed with reference to the adaptive benefits of kin recognition and preferences for familiars, and place results within the context of current knowledge of the ecology of K. marmoratus.  相似文献

Predator recognition and avoidance by paradise fish have been studied with allopatric species and model experiments. The effect of sympatric predators has not been investigated. Here I report that reactions of paradise fish towards a sympatric predator (Channa micropeltes) are quantitatively different from those shown towards an allopatric predator or different harmless species of fishes. I investigate the possible cues eliciting this differential response and show that visual as well as olfactory stimuli play roles. Olfactory stimuli from the sympatric predator alone elicit an elevated level of activity from paradise fish; the appearance of the sympatric predator (with or without olfactory stimuli) results in an exploratory and display reaction. I speculate what visual stimuli may play roles in predator recognition in paradise fish and I suggest that previously asserted key stimuli such as the eyes of the encountered heterospecific fish may not differentiate the harmful species from innocuous. I conclude that the antipredatory behavior of paradise fish may be affected by both genetic factors and learning and that the relative importance of the former or latter factor may vary depending on the situation.  相似文献

Anthropogenic stress has been shown to reduce coral coverage in ecosystems all over the world. A phase shift towards an algae‐dominated system may accompany coral loss. In this case, the composition of the reef‐associated fish assemblage will change and human communities relying on reef fisheries for income and food security may be negatively impacted. We present a case study based on the Raja Ampat Archipelago in Eastern Indonesia. Using a dynamic food web model, we simulate the loss of coral reefs with accompanied transition towards an algae‐dominated state and quantify the likely change in fish populations and fisheries productivity. One set of simulations represents extreme scenarios, including 100% loss of coral. In this experiment, ecosystem changes are driven by coral loss itself and a degree of habitat dependency by reef fish is assumed. An alternative simulation is presented without assumed habitat dependency, where changes to the ecosystem are driven by historical observations of reef fish communities when coral is lost. The coral–algal phase shift results in reduced biodiversity and ecosystem maturity. Relative increases in the biomass of small‐bodied fish species mean higher productivity on reefs overall, but much reduced landings of traditionally targeted species.  相似文献

Agglutinating antibodies to self spermatozoa were induced in mature male rainbow trout, whether immunised with autologous spermatozoa or allogeneic testis. Both sperm heads and flagellae appeared to be autoantigenic. These are the first results which show that fish can produce autoantibodies against spermatozoa. This is an important step towards the control of reproduction in fish using vaccines.  相似文献

Spatial distributions of fish were studied in two types of reservoirs by means of hydroacoustics during the summer. Different patterns of fish distribution were found in non-cascade (Římov, Želivka) and cascade (Kamyk, Slapy, Štěchovice, Vrané) reservoirs. Maximum biomass and density of fish were observed in the tributary area of the non-cascade reservoir. The biomass declined towards the dam area. Average weight of fish showed the opposite trend—maximum average weight was observed in the dam area and declined towards the tributary area. In the cascade reservoirs fish distribution was found to be more complicated but the maximum biomass and density of fish were observed in the dam areas, whereas the tributary areas were nearly fishless. Poor ecohydrological conditions in the tributaries of cascade reservoirs are likely to be responsible for the low abundance of fish in these areas. This was evident in the example of Vrané reservoir which has two major inflows. Low biomass and density of fish were observed in the cold and low oxygen saturated inflowing cascade Vltava River while higher biomass and density were observed in the warm and well oxygen saturated Sázava River inflow. Average weights of fish followed the same trend as in non-cascade reservoirs—the maximum was in the dam area and it declined towards the tributary area. The vertical distribution of fish is driven by the fully developed stratification of temperature and oxygen during the summer season in non-cascade reservoirs. A significantly lower biomass of fish was observed below the thermocline in vertical surveys in both non-cascade and cascade reservoirs. Summer stratification in cascade reservoirs is weakly developed or is not developed at all due to hypolimnetic releases of cold water and short retention times. Enzymes that lengthen the carbon chain of polyunsaturated fatty acids are key to the biosynthesis of the highly unsaturated fatty acids, arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids from linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids. A Mortierella alpina cDNA polyunsaturated fatty acid elongase sequence identified mammalian, amphibian, zebrafish and insect expressed sequence tags (ESTs) in GenBank. Consensus primers were designed in conserved motifs and used to isolate full length cDNA from livers of several fish species by Rapid Amplification of cDNA Ends (RACE). The amplified cDNAs encoded putative open reading frames (ORFs) of 288-294 amino acids that were highly conserved among the fish species. Heterologous expression in yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, demonstrated that all of the ORFs encoded elongases with the ability to lengthen polyunsaturated fatty acid substrates with chain lengths from C18 to C22 and also monounsaturated fatty acids, but not saturated fatty acids. There were differences in the functional competence of the elongases from different fish species. Most of the fish elongases showed a pattern of activity towards different fatty acid substrates in the rank order C18>C20>C22, although the tilapia and turbot elongases had similar activity towards 18:4n-3 and 20:5n-3. The fish elongases generally showed greater activity or similar activities with n-3 than with n-6 homologues, with the exception of the cod enzyme which was more active towards n-6 fatty acids.  相似文献

Gorgonians are abundant in tropical waters and their polyps are seldom predated on. This study investigates how gorgonians defend themselves chemically and physically against fish predation. Gorgonian extracts and sclerites were incorporated into fish feed and tested on reef fishes. Laboratory bioassays using Greyhead wrasses, Halichoeres purpurescens, as well as field bioassays showed five gorgonian species from the family Ellisellidae and three from the family Plexauridae collected from Singapore reefs to be deterrent towards fishes. Bioassays of fractions obtained from subsequent fractionation suggested synergistic or additive effects between compounds present in gorgonians. Sclerites incorporated into fish feed in their natural concentrations were also tested for fish deterrence and were positive for only two gorgonian species from the family Ellisellidae.  相似文献

Responses of rainbowfish ( Melanotaenia duboulayi ) from two populations towards a) an active and a passive predatory fish and b) a novel trawl apparatus, were compared. Predator-sympatric fish avoided the fish predators and showed stronger avoidance behaviour in response to the active predator. These fish used predator inspection excursions to rapidly assess the potential risk and their escape responses were consistently effective. In contrast the predator-naive fish ignored the passive predator but were continually drawn towards the active predator possibly due to generalized curiosity and the absence of significant negative feedback from the predator, which was restrained by a clear Perspex partition. Despite this attraction, the predator-naive fish did not display typical predator inspection behaviour and showed very poor escape performance when initially confronted by the trawl apparatus. Many of these fish, however, showed rapid improvement in their escape performance through learning. These results suggest that predator-sympatric rainbowfish have the capacity to assess the level of threat posed by a predator and predator-naive rainbowfish learn to implement appropriate escape strategies when forced to evade a threat.  相似文献

The Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) is well known as an aggressive fish with unique spawning and parental care behavior. During reproduction, male fish construct a bubble nest, court females, protect the brood, and defend the territory through aggressive displays. Aggression in male Siamese fighting fish has long been the subject of investigation; however, the kinematics of aggression during contests have been largely overlooked. Here we investigated how nest-holding, male Siamese fighting fish use two different types of displays, gill flaring and fin spreading, towards intruders during various reproductive phases; before (BB) and after bubble nest building, and after spawning (AS), and hatching (AH). Males were more aggressive towards male than female intruders and the level of aggression changed significantly between reproductive phases. Gill flaring, the more energetically costly display, was the dominant initial display towards male and female intruders in BB, AS, AH phases. However, defending males switched to fin spreading after prolonged exposure to intruders. The results suggest that Siamese fighting fish use gill flaring as an acute response in order to defend their territory; this response may be replaced by fin spreading as a chronic response, probably to reduce the energetic costs during the contest.  相似文献

Temperature tolerances (including lethal limits) and associated rates of thermal acclimation of fish are critical information in predicting fish responses to global climate changes. In this study, a partial sequence of the heat shock protein 70 gene (HSP70) from the fish species Channa striatus was isolated and characterized. Evolutionary process that led to the diversity of HSP70 specific to vertebrates was also analysed. Results revealed that HSP70 is highly homologous in other fish families. The conservation of the HSP 70 gene among fish families could be driven by forces of natural selection due to climatic change. We exposed C. striatus to heat shock (32 °C) and cold shock (16 °C) respectively, in order to examine the differences of temperatures in influencing the expression patterns of HSP70. We revealed that expression of HSP70 was higher at 32 °C than at 16 °C in most of the organs. Specifically, occurrence of chaperone activity of HSP70 was found at low temperature. Therefore, this fish was postulated that to seems to be able to survive at lower temperature compared to higher temperature indicating there is force of natural selection acting towards this HSP 70 gene. This will demonstrate the effect of global warming towards the fish survivability.  相似文献

Saprolegniosis, the disease caused by Saprolegnia sp., results in considerable economic losses in aquaculture. Current control methods are inadequate, as they are either largely ineffective or present environmental and fish health concerns. Vaccination of fish presents an attractive alternative to these control methods. Therefore we set out to identify suitable antigens that could help generate a fish vaccine against Saprolegnia parasitica. Unexpectedly, antibodies against S. parasitica were found in serum from healthy rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. The antibodies detected a single band in secreted proteins that were run on a one-dimensional SDS-polyacrylamide gel, which corresponded to two protein spots on a two-dimensional gel. The proteins were analysed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Mascot and bioinformatic analysis resulted in the identification of a single secreted protein, SpSsp1, of 481 amino acid residues, containing a subtilisin domain. Expression analysis demonstrated that SpSsp1 is highly expressed in all tested mycelial stages of S. parasitica. Investigation of other non-infected trout from several fish farms in the United Kingdom showed similar activity in their sera towards SpSsp1. Several fish that had no visible saprolegniosis showed an antibody response towards SpSsp1 suggesting that SpSsp1 might be a useful candidate for future vaccination trial experiments.  相似文献

In this study, we assessed whether juvenile brown trout are able to discriminate between, and swim towards, water containing unrelated conspecifics and blank stream water. In a second stage we investigated the behavioural response to sibling-scented vs. nonsibling conspecific-scented water, and how the social environment could affect growth. All the six families (full sibs) tested showed an overall preference to blank water instead of water scented by unfamiliar fish of similar age and size. This result reveals that juvenile brown trout are able to detect chemical water components released by conspecifics, and show a biased behaviour based on this ability. When trout were given the choice between water scented by sibs and unfamiliar nonsibs, results were variable, some families spent more time in the sibling-scented water channel (only significant for one of six families) while others showed the opposite trend. Large within-family variation was also observed in the responses of individual fish towards water scented by siblings and nonsiblings. When fish from three of the families were reared with either siblings or nonsiblings, we obtained results that were only partially consistent with the hypothesis that fish growth could be enhanced in the preferred social environment (which had been predicted from the results of the choice tests).  相似文献

Horizontal migrations of zooplankton between macrophyte patches and open areas were investigated in the sparsely vegetated littoral zone of the Sulejow Reservoir in June-July 2000 and 2001, using one-litre plastic traps. Large-bodied zooplankton: daphnids and copepods generally swam towards the open water at dusk and towards submerged macrophytes at dawn. Small-bodied zooplankton (Bosmina sp., Chydorus sp.) did not show any pattern of horizontal movement. At the time of the research the phytoplankton community was dominated by eatable diatoms (Cyclotella sp.), whose biomass reached 14 mg l−1. Thus, bottom-up forces (food scarcity) are not likely to be responsible for the observed zooplankton migrations. Analyses of fish stomach contents showed high contribution of large zooplankters to the food of juvenile roach (Rutilus rutilus) and perch (Perca fluviatilis) which densely inhabited the littoral zone of reservoir. High fish pressure in the littoral zone along with high density of the predatory cladoceran, Leptodora kindtii in the open water, suggest that top-down forces (predatory pressure) were responsible for the migration of large zooplankton. At dusk predatory pressure of fish fry exceeded that of L. kindtii, forcing endangered zooplankton to escape from macrophytes towards open water. The opposite situation occurred at dawn. The consequences of the relationships for both zooplankton and fish fry communities dynamics are discussed.

Hepatic microsomal epoxide hydratase of the bluegill fish shows characteristics similar to those of the marine fish. The bluegill hepatic microsomal epoxide hydratase activity towards styrene oxide is higher (4n-mole/min per mg protein) and that of mixed-function oxidase towards aldrin epoxidation is lower (0.7n-mole/min per mg protein) than the corresponding enzymes of the male mouse (1.90 and 2.0n-mole/min per mg protein, respectively, for epoxide hydratase and aldrin epoxidase).  相似文献

To understand how a sedentary fish responds to displacement and identify key habitat characteristics for that fish, we translocated long-snouted seahorses (Hippocampus guttulatus) within their natural habitat but far beyond their home range. After displacement, we located these small fish using acoustic technology and collected environmental data where we captured, released, and relocated them. Displaced fish (n?=?9) moved much greater distances (max: 150?m; mean daily: 6.4?C48.2?m) than expected from known home range movements and there was no evidence of homing. Seahorses varied in the specific environments they moved towards but tended to move towards environments more similar in both depth and water current speed to their original capture locations than their release locations.  相似文献

Starry flounder Platichthys stellatus , a rare polymorphic flatfish exhibiting a large-scale geographic cline in the frequency of right-eyed (dextral) and left-eyed (sinistral) morphs, was studied to investigate whether foraging behaviour (turning angle and prey strike orientation) differed between dextral and sinistral laboratory-raised juveniles. Platichthys stellatus foraging on brine shrimp Artemia sp. nauplii tended to strike dorsally at prey ('left' to an observer for dextral flounder and 'right' to an observer for sinistral flounder), although this effect was stronger for sinistral fish. This dorsal tendency also increased with body size. Non-strike behaviours (movements between strikes) were ventrally biased for both morphs. Maximum turn angles were larger for both morphs towards the dorsal side than the ventral side during prey strikes but were the same during non-strike behaviours. The positioning of the eyes of the juvenile starry flounder was skewed towards the dorsal midline rather than being symmetrically placed between dorsal and ventral margins on the eyed side of each fish. The migrating eyes of dextral fish, however, were significantly closer to the dorsal midline than in sinistral fish. This, in addition to the more dorsally oriented prey strikes in sinistral fish, suggests that the morphs are not simple behavioural mirror images of one another and therefore may differ ecologically.  相似文献
