Predator/prey behavior has important consequences for individual survival and recruitment into fish populations, both of which can be affected by stressors such as environmental contaminants. The degree to which prey capture or predator avoidance abilities of a predator or prey species are affected will determine the direction in which the balance will be shifted. In a contaminated estuary we have studied, prey capure and predator avoidance of resident mummichogs, Fundulus heteroclitus, are impaired, which may account for individuals in that estuary having reduced growth and longevity compared with those from uncontaminated sites. Exposure to sediments, water, and grass shrimp from the contaminated site can impair the predatory abilities of mummichogs from a clean site. An important prey species, the grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, has a greater population density and a greater proportion of large individuals at the polluted site, apparently because of reduced predation pressure. Mummichog larvae at the polluted site are initially more active and better at prey capture and predator avoidance than larvae from clean sites, but later they become poorer at both. Differences in predator vulnerability among larvae appear to be due to population differences in behavior, which may be due in part to both genetic and environmentally-caused factors. Conservation of fish populations should consider fish behavior and its interaction with contaminants.  相似文献

Concentrations of heavy metals blends avoided by schools of fathead minnows and alkaline pH levels avoided by schools of bluegill sunfish, fathead minnows, golden shiners, and rainbow trout were determined in a boundary layer avoidance chamber. Parameters measured were residence time, activity, and sequential fish location counts. Data were evaluated using linear, quadratic, and polynomial regression, log10 transformations, analysis of variance, covariance analysis, Duncan's multiple range test, and Hochberg's GT2 test. The best methods of analysis are quadratic regression and covariance analysis.  相似文献

With concerns about the maintenance of both aquatic communities and flow conditions, a number of hydrologic indicators have been developed. These indicators are generally based on the development of hydrologic statistics for flows that are important to the maintenance of aquatic ecosystems. Although the hydrologic basis for indicators is well defined by common techniques in stochastic hydrology, the basis for ecological integration is still being developed. A critical evaluation of hydrologic indicators intended to protect aquatic ecosystems finds that proposed indicators are based more on standard hydrologic statistics and measures of hydrologic alteration than the habitat needs and ecological requirements of local or desired aquatic communities. We argue that hydrologic indicators are not ecohydrological indicators unless direct connections between flow events and aquatic community habitat and ecological needs are the basis of the indicator development and selection. In this article, we identify ecohydrological indicators that are based on habitat and ecological needs of fish communities. The indicator identification process is initiated with the analysis of community needs using an autecology matrix. Hydrologic statistics are then selected that are appropriate to the target fish community. The resulting ecohydrological indicators provide a direct connection to fish community flow requirements and the physical habitat conditions and associated ecology and life history needs of fish species. Infection avoidance behaviors are the first line of defense against pathogenic encounters. Behavioral plasticity in response to internal or external cues of infection can therefore generate potentially significant heterogeneity in infection. We tested whether Drosophila melanogaster exhibits infection avoidance behavior, and whether this behavior is modified by prior exposure to Drosophila C Virus (DCV) and by the risk of DCV encounter. We examined 2 measures of infection avoidance: (1) the motivation to seek out food sources in the presence of an infection risk and (2) the preference to land on a clean food source over a potentially infectious source. While we found no evidence for preference of clean food sources over potentially infectious ones, previously exposed female flies showed lower motivation to pick a food source when presented with a risk of encountering DCV. We discuss the relevance of behavioral plasticity during foraging for host fitness and pathogen spread.  相似文献

Summary In laboratory experiments, I studied differential susceptibility of four co-occurring species of chironomids to a predatory damselfly. The chironomids differed in foraging behavior and could be ranked according to the amount of time they spent outside of their tubes. In choice experiments, the predator consistently selected the prey which spent more time out of the tube, and time out of tube was a significant predictor of the predation rate coefficient. Electivity indices, calculated from field samples and diet analyses of the predator, supported the laboratory results. The data suggest that exposure to predators in a heterogeneous prey community is largely determined by tubedwelling behavior.  相似文献

Ayu fish form algae-feeding territories in a river during a non-breeding (growing) season. We build a cost-benefit theory to describe the breakdown and formation of territory. In the early stage of a growing season, all fish hold territories at low densities. Once all territory sites are occupied, excess fish become floaters. When fish density further increases, a phase transition occurs: all the territories suddenly break down and fish form a school. In contrast, when the fish density is decreased, territories are suddenly formed from the school. Both theory and experiments demonstrate that ayu should exhibit a historical effect: the breakdown and formation processes of territory are largely different. In particular, the theory in formation process predicts a specific fish behavior: an “attempted territory holder” that tries to have a small territory emerges just before the formation of territory.  相似文献

Inbreeding depression should select for inbreeding avoidance behaviours. Here we test this hypothesis in two populations of the simultaneous hermaphroditic freshwater snail Physa acuta. We recorded the copulatory behaviour of 288 pairs of sib-mates, non-kin mates from the same population, or non-kin mates from two different populations. We find that kin discriminatory behaviours exist in this species, exclusively expressed by individuals playing the female role. We discuss the relevance of our finding in the context of the evolution of recognition systems and the consequences of such a behaviour in natural populations.  相似文献

The bioaccumulation of Hg, Cd, Zn, Cu, Mn and Fe was evaluated in the muscle and liver tissue of four fish species (Siganus rivulatus, Diplodus sargus, Lithognatus mormyrus and Plathychtis flesus) from clean and polluted marine coastal sites in the Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea and North Sea within the framework of the MARS 1 program. Representative liver samples were screened for organic contaminants (DDE, PCBs and PAHs) which exhibited very low concentrations. The levels of Cd, Cu, Zn, Fe and Mn found in the muscle tissue in this study were similar among the four species and within the naturally occurring metal ranges. However, differences were found among the sites. In the Red Sea, Cu was higher in the muscle of S. rivulatus at Ardag and Zn at the Observatory (OBS). Cu, Zn and Mn were higher in the Red Sea than in the specimens from the Mediterranean. The differences were attributed to different diets derived from distinctively different natural environments. D. sargus from Haifa Bay (HB) had higher Cd, Cu and Mn values than specimens from Jaffa (JFA), and L. mormyrus higher Cd, Fe and Mn in HB, corresponding to the polluted environmental status of the Bay. No differences in metal levels were found among the North Sea sites, except for Fe that was lower at the Eider station. Hg was low in all the specimens, but the values varied with species and sites. The lowest Hg values were found in S. rivulatus, the herbivorous species, as expected from its trophic level. Hg in P. flesus was higher than in S. rivulatus but still low. Higher Hg values were found in the muscle tissue of L. mormyrus,with the highest values in D. sargus, both carnivorous species from the same family. Hg in D. sargus was higher in HB than in JFA, as expected, but in the larger specimens of L. mormyrus from JFA values were higher, while in the small specimens there were no differences in Hg values. The levels of all metals were higher in the liver than in the muscle, with enrichment factors ranging from 3 to 104, depending on species and sites. The lowest enrichment values were found for Hg. Based on liver values, the specimens of S. rivulatus from the OBS had the highest levels, as well as D. sargus and L. mormyrus from JFA, contrary to the known relative environmental status of the sites. Bitter taste avoidance behavior (BAB) plays a fundamental role in the avoidance of toxic substances with a bitter taste. However, the molecular basis underlying the development of BAB is unknown. To study critical developmental events by which taste buds turn into functional organs with BAB, we investigated the early phase development of BAB in postnatal mice in response to bitter-tasting compounds, such as quinine and thiamine. Postnatal mice started to exhibit BAB for thiamine and quinine at postnatal day 5 (PD5) and PD7, respectively. Histological analyses of taste buds revealed the formation of microvilli in the taste pores starting at PD5 and the localization of type 2 taste receptor 119 (TAS2R119) at the microvilli at PD6. Treatment of the tongue epithelium with cytochalasin D (CytD), which disturbs ACTIN polymerization in the microvilli, resulted in the loss of TAS2R119 localization at the microvilli and the loss of BAB for quinine and thiamine. The release of ATP from the circumvallate papillae tissue due to taste stimuli was also declined following CytD treatment. These results suggest that the localization of TAS2R119 at the microvilli of taste pores is critical for the initiation of BAB.  相似文献

Variation in the intensity of schooling behavior in fishes suggests that the benefits of aggregation are balanced by certain costs. We examined the proximity of group members to each other in juvenile walleye pollock, Theragra chalcogramma, under different environmental conditions. Food availability, simulated by a gradient of six ration treatments, had a major influence on group cohesion, with increasing dispersion as food level decreased. Group cohesion also decreased at night relative to daytime levels. Small juveniles (x=53 mm TL) maintained on high rations were highly responsive to the potential threat of a predator, with groups becoming more cohesive and remaining so for up to an hour after the initial threat. A chronic threat (continual presence of predators) resulted in tighter group cohesion than an acute threat (single simulated attack). Small juveniles maintained on low rations were less responsive to predation threats and recovered quickly, supporting the hypothesis that hunger induces risk-taking behavior. Large juveniles (x=149 mm TL) did not change their degree of aggregation in response to either type of predation threat. An overall plasticity in the degree of cohesiveness among group members indicates that walleye pollock are capable of gradually modifying their schooling behavior according to the environmental context.  相似文献

Intraperitoneal administration of the mycotoxin penitrem A 30 min before a training session in passive avoidance task, impaired performance of rats subjected to a test-session 24 h after. This effect was not antagonised by pretraining administration of physostigmine or bicuculline. Administration of penitrem A 20 min before a training session or 30 min before a test-session did not impair performance. In the Morris water maze, doses of penitrem A that induces slight to moderate tremors, but not a lower dose, disrupted place learning. These results suggest that penitrem A disrupts the processes that take place at the time of acquisition, but not those just after acquisition, and does not alter the restitution of information. This effect would not be related to a decrease of cholinergic neurotransmission nor to a stimulation of GABA A receptors. Nevertheless, it could not be totally excluded that the performance impairments induced by penitrem A would be secondary to a motor disruption. It is well established that wheel running in rats produces conditioned taste avoidance; that is, rats that run in wheels after consuming a novel-tasting solution later consume less of that solution than rats that do not run. In experiment 1, we found that wheel running also produces conditioned disgust reactions, indicated by gapes elicited by both the taste and context that were experienced before running. Experiment 2 showed that the conditioned disgust reactions were likely not due to running itself but to a by-product of running, the rocking of the wheel that occurs when the running stops. When rocking was reduced, the disgust reactions were also reduced, but consumption of the taste solution was not changed, showing dissociation of conditioned taste avoidance and disgust. These findings indicate that the taste avoidance induced by wheel running itself is more like the taste avoidance produced by rewarding drugs than that produced by nausea-inducing drugs.  相似文献

Summary A new function of amino acid in fish behavior was found. Amino acids induced sexual behavior in male rose bitterling (Rhodeus ocellatus ocellatus). Two types of sexual behavior which were pecking and sperm release were observed. Amino acids are known as feeding stimulants in some fish. The pecking behavior of male fish induced by amino acids is similar to the feeding behavior but it was sexual. Only male bitterling showed pecking and sperm release but the female showed no response to the amino acids. 10 out of 20 amino acids induced sexual behavior and both pecking and sperm release were induced by the same amino acids. These two kinds of behavior changed alternately depending on the light conditions. It is of interest that non-specific material such as some amino acids function like sex pheromone.  相似文献

Synopsis Pairs of Cichlasoma centrarchus were observed daily in the laboratory. Both males and females made sounds during a breeding cycle but all sounds were aggressive in context; no sounds were heard to accompany courtship. Males made more sounds before spawning than afterwards and these were associated with territorial defense and with establishment of dominance over the female. Females produced more sounds after spawning than before, most in the context of brood defense but some toward the male during pre-spawning nest preparation. Prior to spawning, the number of sounds made by the males toward their mates increased but the aggressive actions accompanying them became less intense. No such inverse correlation of agonistic intensity with number of sounds made was found for the females. From this study and earlier ones by the author it was concluded that sound in this species is a threat display which 1) provides an expression for agonism alternative to the performance of actions which could injure the female or drive her away, and 2) lessens the risk of injury to male or female during territory or brood defense.  相似文献

Synopsis Ultrasonic telemetry was used to study the movement and behavior of nine adult muskellunge, 69 to 101 cm in total length. Intensive fish tracking conducted from June to August 1978 produced 1178 contacts, the basis for summer home range determinations. Eight fish established summer home ranges by the time surface water temperatures rose above 17°C in mid-June, and by early July all fish exhibited home range behavior. Individual summer home ranges were 39 to 443 ha (mean = 146 ha) in area as determined by the minimum convex polygon method, and 27 to 73 ha (mean = 63 ha) as estimated by the grid-square method. Six fish had home ranges comprised of two distinct activity centers, 2.0 to 3.5 km apart. Some home ranges spatially overlapped, but occurrences of two fish at a common location were rare. In autumn, six of eight surviving fish remained within or near their summer home ranges. Lake Tanganyika harbors the ecologically, morphologically, and behaviorally most diverse species flock of cichlid fishes. It is comprised by substrate breeding and mouthbrooding species, most of which live in littoral habitats. Species communities are characterized by complex behavioral and trophic interactions, resulting in a dense pattern of partially overlapping territories, depending on the degree of ecological distinctness. We studied territorial behavior of breeding pairs in a substrate breeding species, with respect to territory size and defense behavior. The study species Variabilichromis moorii belongs to the tribe Lamprologini, the most species rich tribe of cichlids in Lake Tanganyika. Our study shows that breeding pairs of V. moorii can have highly complex territories, in which both parents hold separate sub-territories which are shifted slightly according to the movements of the fry, but the outer borders are conjointly defended. The size of the total defended territory varied from <1 to almost 4 m2, averaging at about 2 m2. Depending on presence of competitors or fry-predators evoking agonistic interactions, the territory size varied quite substantially over the day. Attack rates and size of the defended area decreased with water depth. Agonistic behavior was observed toward heterospecifics as well as conspecifics, with heterospecific attacks mostly concerning territorial neighbors and potential fry-predators in about equal frequencies. The study presented has been carried out to evaluate the treatment performance, fish production and water consumption of a closed-loop chemical-free water treatment system for small-scale cyprinid fish farms. The closed-loop system consisted of a 36 m3 experimental pond (Pond A) with initial carp load of 1 kg/m3 (34 Cyprinus c. carpio); of a treatment train (TT) with a roughing filter (RF), glass fibre filters (GFF), and UV-C units (UV); and of an ultrasound unit (US) installed in the corner of the pond. The average circulation of the water in the closed-loop system was 2.3 times per day. Pond A was compared with a control pond (Pond B) of the same dimensions and fish load but with no TT or US. The TT was efficient in the removal of total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total coliforms (TC), and faecal coliforms (FC), reaching 35%, 42%, 33%, 37%, 91% and 91% removal, respectively. The majority of pollutant removal took place in the RF, while the GFF contributed mostly to the removal of TC and FC. UV did not contribute to the removal of bacteria, mostly due to low TC and FC inputs. The removal of nutrients in the TT (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, total phosphorous and orto-phosphate) was not efficient. Despite this, Pond A had markedly lower nutrient concentrations compared to Pond B, and all the mean values of the measured parameters except nitrites and total phosphorous in Pond A were below legislation limit. Specific growth rate and fish body weight increase in Pond A were higher than in Pond B (0.3%/day, 0.2%/day, 152% and 115%, respectively) indicating better rearing conditions in Pond A. However, fish showed with 2.8 in Pond A and 3.3 in Pond B poor feed conversion rate over warm months. Higher water consumption in Pond A was due to various interventions during the pilot operation that can be reduced in normal operation. The results showed that the closed-loop system presented could be useful for semi-natural fish farming of 1-2 kg fish/m3. However, the system should be improved with regular sedimented algae removal to avoid nutrient accumulation.  相似文献

The study investigated visual recognition of conspecifics and predators by settlement-stage coral reef fish larvae in a set of three experiments using a dual-choice aquarium (Moorea Island). Experiments 1 and 2 were conducted under artificial light conditions. Experiment 3 was conducted under natural light during new and full moon nights. In experiment 1, five out of six species preferred conspecifics rather than heterospecifics (Acanthurus triostegus, Chromis viridis, Ostorhinchus angustatus, Stegastes fasciolatus, Valenciaenna strigata). In experiment 2, three out of six species were repulsed by predators (Mulloidichtys flavolineatus, O. angustatus, V. strigata). In experiment 3 (conducted on one species), A. triostegus was attracted to conspecifics during bright nights, but did not show such behavior during dark nights. Our study raises the question of trade-off for fish larvae to settle during the night with high light intensities to favor the visual recognition of conspecifics and predators, or during darker nights to reduce reef predation.  相似文献
