Occurrence and toxic profiles of paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) in the chocolata clam Megapitaria squalida were investigated. From December 2001 to December 2002, 25 clams were obtained monthly from Bahia de La Paz, Gulf of California. Additionally, net (20 microm) and bottle phytoplankton samples were also collected to identify toxic species. Toxins were analyzed by HPLC with post-column oxidation and fluorescence detection. Toxicity in the clam was low and varied from 0.14 to 5.46 microg/STXeq/100 g. Toxicity was detected in December, March, April, June, and August. Toxin profile was composed mainly by STX, GTX2, GTX3, dcGTX2, dcGTX3, C2, dcSTX and B1. Gymnodinium catenatum was the only PST-producing dinoflagellate identified in the phytoplankton samples throughout the study period. G. catenatum was observed mainly in net samples from December 2001 to December 2002; however, in bottle samples, G. catenatum was only observed in five months. Highest abundance (2600 cells l(-1)) was observed in March and the lowest (160 cells l(-1)) in June. G. catenatum mainly formed two-cell chains and rarely four or eight. The presence of PST in net phytoplankton samples support the fact that G. catenatum is the main source of PST in the clams. This study represents the first report of PST toxins in the chocolata clam from Bahia de La Paz.  相似文献

We present the results of a floristic study of intertidal species of Gelidiaceae collected in ten localities in the Bahía de Banderas region. The study area is within an extensive overlapping transitional zone between the tropical and subtropical regions of the Mexican Pacific coast. Species of the genera Gelidium and Pterocladia were found, G. microdentatum and G. pusillum being the most abundant and widely distributed in the Bay. The local and Mexican Pacific distribution for each species is given. The number of species found in this study is compared with the numbers reported in the literature for the Mexican Pacific.  相似文献

We describe the composition and distribution of bivalve molluscs from the sandy and rocky intertidal and the shallow subtidal environments of Bahía de Mazatlán, México. The bivalve fauna of the bay is represented by 89 living species in 28 families, including 37 new records and four range extensions: Lithophaga hastasia, Adula soleniformis, Mactrellona subalata, and Strigilla ervilia. The number of species increases from the upper (44) and lower intertidal (53) to the shallow subtidal (76), but only 11 (17%) have a wide distribution in the bay (i.e., found in all sampling sites and environments). The bivalve assemblages are composed of four main life forms: 27 epifaunal species, 26 infaunal, 16 semi-infaunal, and 20 endolithic. A taxonomic distinctness analysis identified the sampling sites and environments that contribute the most to the taxonomic diversity (species to suborder categories) of the bay. The present work increased significantly (31%) to 132 species previous inventories of bivalves of Bahía de Mazatlán. These species represent 34% of the bivalve diversity of the southern Golfo de California and approximately 15% of the Eastern Tropical Pacific region.  相似文献

Observations on microplankton in the autumn of 1996 revealed the existence of high densities of Pseudo-nitzschia spp. A similar phenomenon was found in November 1998 and November 1999 and a month later it shifted to the southern Mazatlán Bay while in California, USA, incidents of the poisoning of sea mammals were being recorded; this also happened on the Mexican Pacific coasts from January to March. Water samples collected at surface (<0.5 m deep) and subsurface (10 m deep) monthly, from November 1998 to January 1999 and every week from February 1999 to May 2000, were analyzed by the Uterm?hl technique at 400 enlargements. Phytoplankton quantification showed winter and summer pulses; the 1998-1999 period was higher than the 1999-2000 period. Five species of Pseudo-nitzschia were identified by electron microscopy (TEM and SEM); a new study has revealed other species. High values of Pseudo-nitzschia were observed: 730 P-n/ml (Dec. 1999), 610 P-n/ml (Dec. 1998), 335 P-n/ml (Jul. 1999), 198 P-n/ml (Feb. 1999), 170 P-n/ml (Nov. 1998), 123 P-n/ml (Mar. 1999), 108 P-n/ml (Aug. 1999). The blooms of other species of diatoms (Thalassiosira spp., Asterionellopsis glacialis, Chaetoceros spp., Skeletonema costatum), dinoflagellates (Prorocentrum spp., Scripsiella trochoidea) and ciliates (Myrionecta rubra) were also observed.  相似文献

The shrimp fishery is the most economically important fishery in Mexico. The trawler-based portion of this fishery results in high rates of by-catch. This study quantifies and describes the biodiversity of by-catch associated with trawling in the Bahía de Kino region of Sonora, Mexico. Data were collected from 55 trawls, on six boats, over 14 nights, during November of 2003, 2004, 2006-2009. By-catch rates within trawl samples averaged 85.9% measured by weight. A total of 183 by-catch species were identified during the course of this study, including 97 species of bony fish from 43 families, 19 species of elasmobranchs from 12 families, 66 species of invertebrates from eight phyla, and one species of marine turtle; seven of the documented by-catch species are listed on the IUCN Red List, CITES, or the Mexican NOM-059-ECOL-2010; 35 species documented in the by-catch are also targeted by local artisanal fishers. Some of the species frequently captured as juveniles in the by-catch are economically important to small-scale fishers in the region, and are particularly sensitive to overexploitation due to their life histories. This study highlights the need for further research quantifying the impacts of high levels of by-catch upon small-scale fishing economies in the region and presents strong ecological and economic rationale for by-catch management within the shrimp fishery of the Gulf of California. Site-specific by-catch management plans should be piloted in the Bahía de Kino region to address the growing momentum in national and international fisheries policy regimes toward the reduction of by-catch in shrimp fisheries.  相似文献

The process of metal bioaccumulation in marine food chains is poorly understood because very little data is available on metal concentration at different trophic levels and their temporal or spatial variation. Because of that, we were interested to (1) determine the concentration range of heavy metals in seaweed and seagrasses species in Magdalena Bay; (2) describe the spatial and temporal variation of heavy metal concentrations in the seaweeds and seagrasses. Seasonal collections were done at Estero Banderitas in November 2004, February, and April 2005 wherein we divided the estuary into three major areas (upper, middle, and lower), and within each area, two sites were selected. Our results showed that iron, copper, and magnesium were the most significant metals found in seagrasses, red, and green algae. We found significant more variation in temporal heavy metal concentrations in relation to the maximum abundance in the samples and spatial variation in relation to the studied taxa suggesting that hervibores have a differential intake of the metals. Also, our results suggest that heavy metals might be incorporated regularly in the diet of many herbivorous animals with severe consequences to their health. Management strategies for these species should consider monitoring the levels of metals.  相似文献

Eight species of polyplacophorans have been reported from La Bahia de la Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. We add Lepidochitona beanii, Chaetopleura lurida, Stenoplax limaciformis, S. mariposa, Lepidozona clathrata, L. serrata and Acanthochitona arragonites, increasing the known number of species to 15. Ordination analysis of five chiton communities at the site suggests a correlation of wave exposure to species composition and diversity: communities with intermediate wave exposure have more species (richness) and higher diversity (Shannon's index).  相似文献

The zooplankton community structure, including copepods, euphausiids, chaetognaths, and decapod larvae, was monitored during six circadian cycles using Bongo net (500 microns mesh net) samples from Bahía Magdalena, on the southwest coast of Baja California, México. Samples were obtained during three oceanographic surveys (March, July, and December 1996) to describe the changes in the zooplankton community structure throughout the main mouth of Bahía Magdalena. The zooplankton community structure showed strong changes with a close relation to environmental conditions. During March, a well-mixed water column with low temperature and salinity indicated an influence of the California Current water and local upwelling processes. During July, temperature increased and a wide salinity range was recorded. The stratification of the water column was intense during summer, enhancing the thermocline. The highest temperatures and salinity were recorded in December, related to the presence of the Costa Rica Coastal Current (CRCC). The thermocline deepened as water temperature increased. A typical temperate community structure with low specific richness dominated by Calanus pacificus, Nyctiphanes simplex, and Acartia clausi and high zooplankton biomass (average 9.3 and 5.5 ml 1000 m-3 respectively) during March and July shifted to a more complex tropical community structure with a low zooplankton biomass in December (average 0.37 ml 1000 m-3). The mouth of Bahía Magdalena has a vigorous exchange of water caused by tidal currents. The zooplankton community structure was not significantly different between the central part of Bahía Magdalena and the continental shelf outside the bay for all months. The results suggest a more dynamic inside-outside interaction of zooplankton assemblages than first thought.  相似文献

Gymnodinium bloom events are of concern, since they produce toxins, which have unfavorable consequences to marine ecosystems, human health and the economy. This report describes the physico-chemical conditions that were present during the algal bloom event on May 2010 in Bahía Manzanillo and Bahía Santiago, Colima, Mexico. For this, seawater nutrient analysis, phytoplankton counts, identification, and toxicity tests were undertaken. Nutrients in seawater were determined using colorimetric techniques, the higher concentrations (8.88 microM DIN, 0.78 microM PO4 and 24.34 microM SiO2) were related with upwelling waters that promoted the algal bloom that began after registering the year lowest sea-surface temperature, favoring the rapid growth of G. catenatum (up to 1.02 x 10(7) cells/L). Phytoplankton counting was carried out using sedimentation chambers and cells enumerated on appropriated area. The bloom persisted in the bays for approximately two weeks and was associated with toxicity (determined with HPLC) in local oysters (1525.8 microg STXeq/100g), and in phytoplankton (10.9 pg STXeq/cells) samples. Strong variations in cell toxicity (1.4 to 10.9pg STXeq/cells), most likely reflected the availability of inorganic nutrients. The toxin profile of the phytoplankton samples consisted of 11 toxins and resembled those recorded for several strains of G. catenatum isolated from other coastal areas of Mexico.  相似文献

A study on ecological records of planktonic copepods from The Ventosa Bay, Oaxaca, Mexico is presented. Five species were identified: Labidocera acuta, L. lubbockii, Pontella agassizi, P. tenuiremis and Pontellina plumata. The most abundant species was L. acuta and their copepodite stages conforming the 95.7% of Pontellids, followed by L. lubbockii 4.09%; other species were less than one percent. The reproductive success of L. acuta is probably favored by its resistance to the changes in temperature and salinity, because of it is an eurytherme and euryhaline organism. Total density of this family was between 18 and 472 copepods/100 m3 in 1987 and 1988. Nevertheless in 1992 and 1993 the density was between 490 to 123,030 copepods/100 m3. This copepod density increment could be related local phenomenon (upwelling) at the beginning and end of the year.  相似文献

The Mexican oyster fishery, 90% supported by the coastal lagoons of the Gulf of Mexico, has decreased drastically in the last six years as a result of anthropogenic pollution and improper management. The mussel Ischadium recurvum has proliferated and competes with oysters for space and probably food. Crassostrea virginica and Ischadium recurvum were studied to evaluate somatic production with biometry and physiological condition indices (PCI's) during an annual cycle. A random sample of 200 organisms was taken montly for each species. Condition indices wet flesh weigth: wet shell weight ratio (WFW/WSW), dry flesh weight: wet flesh weight ratio (DFW/WFW), dry flesh wet: dry shell weight ratio (DFW/DSW), and ash free dry weight: tissue dry weight (AFDW/TDW) were calculated. In order to stablish physiological condition and temporal variability, these indices were compared between species and months. The somatic production of mussels was higher than in oysters. This enhancement in production could be explained by: 1) Mussel uses less energy for shell production, 2) a constant recruitment of mussel almost year-round, and 3) the mesohalin lagoon was more favourable to the mussel.  相似文献

Cuitzeo is the second largest lake in México (ca. 425 km2). Indigenous people collect clam shrimp (locally known as `conchilla') and sell them dry as pets' food; the income is important for the local economy. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a clam shrimp fishery. Two conchilla species co-occur: Eocyzicus digueti (Richard) and Leptestheria compleximanus (Packard). They were restricted to the saline, soda-alkaline, and temporally astatic W and NW portions of the lake. E. digueti constituted 70% of the total clam shrimp abundance, and L. compleximanus the remainder. Populations were dominated by juveniles, followed by females and males, with sex ratios (male:female) of 1:1.2 to 1:1.4. E. digueti was larger (3–11 mm) than L. compleximanus (3–8.5 mm), and males were larger than females in both species. There were highly significant correlations between carapace size and the number of growth lines and carapace size and the number of eggs. Although previously reported from México, both species are new records for Lake Cuitzeo and for Michoacán state.  相似文献

In a semidesert community in México (Zapotitlán de las Salinas, Puebla) the vertical distribution of roots and root biomass was estimated at 0–100 cm depth on two sampling dates, November 1995 (wet season) and January 1998 (dry season). Root productivity at 7 to 14.5 cm depth was estimated with the in-growth core technique every two months from March 1996 to February 1998. The relationship between environmental factors and seasonal root productivity was analyzed. Finally, we tested the effect of an irrigation equivalent to 20 mm of rain on root production. Seventy four percent of the total number of roots were found at 0-40 cm depth. Very fine roots (<1 mm diameter) were found throughout the soil profile (0-100 cm). In contrast, fine roots (1-3 mm diameter) were found only from 0–90 cm depth, and coarse roots (>3 mm diameter) from 0–60 cm depth. The root biomass was 971.5 g m–2 (S.D. = 557.39), the very fine and fine roots representing 62.9% of the total. Total root productivity, as estimated with the ingrowth core technique, was 0.031 Mg ha–1 over the dry season and 0.315 Mg ha–1 over the wet season. Only very fine roots were obtained at all sampling dates. Rainfall was significantly correlated with very fine root production. The difference between fine root production in non-watered (0.054 g m–2) and watered (0.429 g m–2) treatments was significant. The last value was the same as that predicted for a rain of 20 mm, according to the exponential model describing the relation between the production of very fine roots and rainfall at the site.  相似文献

The evolution of an ichthiotoxic algal bloom caused by the dinoflagellate Cochlodinium catenatum was studied from July to December 2000. The abnormal multiplication of this dinoflagellate occurred in the form of a discoloration spreading between a temperature and salinity interval of 25-32 degrees C and 33-35 ups, respectively. The density of C. catenatum reached 10 841 cells ml(-1). The event was observed in large areas of Banderas Bay affecting 13 fish species, whose massive killing was due to suffocation (gill obstruction and excessive mucus production). The human population around the area did not present respiratory affections or skin irritation. The C. catenatum measurements suggest a hologamic and heterothalic reproduction. Their morphological characteristics suggest that C. polykrikoides, C. heterolobatum and C. catenatum are the same species. It is estimated that the species could be a recent introduction in the Mexican Pacific.  相似文献

AimBiochemical relapse-free survival (bRFS) rate is determined by a cohort of Mexican patients (n = 595) with prostate cancer who received treatment with external radiotherapy.BackgroundPatients with prostate cancer were collected from CMN Siglo XXI (IMSS), CMN 20 de Noviembre (ISSSTE), and Hospital General de México (HGM). For the IMSS, 173 patients that are treated with three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) and 250 with SBRT, for the ISSSTE 57 patients are treated with 3D-CRT and on the HGM 115 patients are managed with intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). The percentage of patients by risk group is: low 11.1%, intermediate 35.1% and high 53.8%. The average follow-up is 39 months, and the Phoenix criterion was used to determine the bRFS.Materials and methodsThe Kaplan–Meier technique for the construction of the survival curves and, the Cox proportional hazards to model the cofactors. Results(a) The bRFS rates obtained are 95.9% for the SBRT (7 Gy fx, IMSS), 94.6% for the 3D-CRT (1.8 Gy fx, IMSS), 91.3% to the 3D-CRT (2.65 Gy fx, IMSS), 89.1% for the SBRT (7.25 Gy fx, IMSS), 88.7% for the IMRT (1.8 Gy fx, HGM) %, and 87.7% for the 3D-CRT (1.8 Gy fx, ISSSTE). (b) There is no statistically significant difference in the bRFS rates by fractionation scheme, c) Although the numerical difference in the bRFS rate per risk group is 95.5%, 93.8% and 89.1% for low, intermediate and high risk, respectively, these are not statistically significant.ConclusionsThe RT techniques for the treatment of PCa are statistically equivalent with respect to the bRFS rate. This paper confirms that the bRFS rates of Mexican PCa patients who were treated with conventional vs. hypofractionated schemes do not differ significantly.  相似文献
