Classical niche theory explains the coexistence of species through their exploitation of different resources. Assemblages of herbivores coexisting on a particular plant species are thus expected to be dominated by species from host-specific guilds with narrow, coexistence-facilitating niches rather than by species from generalist guilds. Exactly the opposite pattern is observed for folivores feeding on trees in New Guinea. The least specialized mobile chewers were the most species rich, followed by the moderately specialized semiconcealed and exposed chewers. The highly specialized miners and mesophyll suckers were the least species-rich guilds. The Poisson distribution of herbivore species richness among plant species in specialized guilds and the absence of a negative correlation between species richness in different guilds on the same plant species suggest that these guilds are not saturated with species. We show that herbivore assemblages are enriched with generalists because these are more completely sampled from regional species pools. Herbivore diversity increases as a power function of plant diversity, and the rate of increase is inversely related to host specificity. The relative species diversity among guilds is thus scale dependent, as the importance of specialized guilds increases with plant diversity. Specialized insect guilds may therefore comprise a larger component of overall diversity in the tropics (where they are also poorly known taxonomically) than in the temperate zone, which has lower plant diversity.  相似文献

As the earth faces a warming climate, the rock record reminds us that comparable climatic scenarios have occurred before. In the Late Cretaceous, Arctic marine organisms were not subject to frigid temperatures but still contended with seasonal extremes in photoperiod. Here, we describe an unusual fossil assemblage from Devon Island, Arctic Canada, that offers a snapshot of a ca 75 Myr ago marine palaeoecosystem adapted to such conditions. Thick siliceous biogenic sediments and glaucony sands reveal remarkably persistent high primary productivity along a high-latitude Late Cretaceous coastline. Abundant fossil faeces demonstrate that this planktonic bounty supported benthic invertebrates and large, possibly seasonal, vertebrates in short food chains. These ancient organisms filled trophic roles comparable to those of extant Arctic species, but there were fundamental differences in resource dynamics. Whereas most of the modern Arctic is oligotrophic and structured by resources from melting sea ice, we suggest that forested terrestrial landscapes helped support the ancient marine community through high levels of terrigenous organic input.  相似文献

Although large-bodied cladocerans such asDaphnia can reduce algal biomass significantly in temperate lakes if freed from fish predation, the applicability of such biomanipulation techniques for eutrophication management in the subtropics and tropics has been examined only recently. Subtropical cladoceran assemblages differ from those of temperate lakes by their low species richness, early summer gameogenesis, and greatly reduced body size. Eutrophic Florida lakes are dominated by pump-filter feeding fish rather than by size selective planktivores as a temperate lakes. Cladocerans in Florida lakes can increase in abundance significantly if freed from fish but fail to have an impact on algal biomass or composition. The greatest potential for using biomanipulation to manage phytoplankton-dominated lakes in the subtropics and tropics lies with phytophagous fish. Future research should concentrate on defining the role of individual fish taxa on phytoplankton composition and community structure, nutrient cycling, and planktonic productivity before embarking on whole lake manipulation projects.  相似文献

The structure and components of European estuarine fish assemblages   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
This paper discusses the structure of fish assemblages using information from 17 European estuarine areas (in the British Isles, Portugal, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway and Spain). Binary (presence/absence) and quantitative data for each assemblage have been used to assess the assemblage structure according to taxonomy (i.e. species identity). Following this, a total of 29 functional guilds were created in order to describe the use made of an estuarine area for each taxon encountered: feeding preferences, reproduction type, substratum preferences (for bottom dwelling fish) and position within the water column (vertical preference guild). The paper focuses on the designation and determination of the proportions of the guild members of the fish assemblage within each estuary. Ecological guilds within the assemblage include estuarine residents, marine juvenile migrants, catadromous and anadromous migrants, marine seasonal users, and freshwater and marine adventitious species. Feeding guilds include detritivores, planktonic feeders, infaunal croppers and sediment ingesters, piscivores, and active predators of mobile crustaceans. Reproduction guilds include planktonic and demersal spawners and those using brood-protection. The substratum preference indicates the proportions of sand, mud, rock and vegetation dwellers, and the vertical preference denotes benthic, demersal or pelagic species. The analysis has allowed both the estuaries to be grouped according to taxonomic and guild similarity and the characterisation of a typical European estuarine fish assemblage. Within the limits posed by differing sampling methods, times of sampling and survey rationale, there is a high similarity between estuaries. The data indicate common patterns of estuarine usage irrespective of the differences between the estuaries although such patterns cannot be interpreted fully given the incomplete knowledge of their physical and anthropogenic characteristics.  相似文献

Recent studies have suggested that diatom viruses are an important factor affecting diatom population dynamics, which in turn are important in considering marine primary productivity. The marine planktonic diatom Chaetoceros tenuissimus Meunier is a cosmopolitan species and often causes blooms off the western coast of Japan. To date, two viruses, C. tenuissimus DNA virus (CtenDNAV) type I and CtenRNAV type I, have been identified that potentially affect C. tenuissimus population dynamics in the natural environment. In this study, we successfully isolated and characterized two additional novel viruses (CtenDNAV type II and CtenRNAV type II). This paper reports the basic characteristics of these new viruses isolated from surface water or sediment from the Hiroshima Bay, Japan. The physiological and morphological characteristics of the two new viruses were similar to those of the previously isolated viruses. However, the amino acid sequences of the structural proteins of CtenDNAV type II and CtenRNAV type II were clearly distinct from those of both type I viruses, with identity scores of 38.3% and 27.6%, respectively. Our results suggest that at least four genetically distinct viruses sharing the same diatom host are present in western Japan and affect the population dynamics of C. tenuissimus. Moreover, the result that CtenRNAV type II lysed multiple diatom species indicates that RNA viruses may affect various diatom populations in the natural environment.  相似文献

Deep-sea drilling at high latitudes of the Southern Hemispheres has provided almost the only available data to evaluate the biogeographic development of the planktonic biota in the Southern Ocean during the Cenozoic (65 m.y. to Present Day). Paleontological investigations on Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) materials have shown that the development of Cenozoic planktonic biogeography of the Southern Ocean is intimately linked with the evolution of the Southern Ocean water masses themselves. During the Cenozoic, this has included the development of the Circum-Antarctic Current system as obstructing land masses moved apart, the refrigeration and later extensive glaciation of the continent, and the development of the Antarctic Convergence (Polar Front) with related oceanic upwelling.Almost all evolution of calcareous planktonic microfossils has occurred outside of the Antarctic—Subantarctic region followed by limited migration into these water masses. Virtually no endemism occurs amongst calcareous microfossil groups at these latitudes. In contrast, conspicuous and widespread evolution has occurred within the siliceous microfossil groups especially during the Neogene. Low diversity and differences in stratigraphic ranges of Antarctic calcareous microfossils makes them only broadly useful for correlation. Relatively higher diversities within the Subantarctic provide a firmer basis for more detailed correlation, although the ranges of fossils are often different than at lower latitudes because of different paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic controls. Within the Antarctic water mass south of the Antarctic Convergence, siliceous microfossilsbiostratigraphy, oxygen isotopic stratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy, provide the only firm basis for correlation with low-latitude sequences.Eocene (55-38 Ma) sediments contain abundant calcareous microfossils even closely adjacent to the continent. Antarctic calcareous planktonic microfossils of this age exhibit relative high diversity, although this is lower than assemblages of equivalent age at middle and low latitudes. Within the Subantarctic region, Eocene planktonic foraminifera exhibit strong affinities with those in the temperate regions. Biogeographic differences exist between various sectors of the Southern Ocean related to biogeographic isolation preceding the development of the Circum-Antarctic Current. Subantarctic calcareous nannofossil assemblages of Paleocene and Eocene age exhibit higher diversity than Oligocene and Neogene assemblages. Siliceous microfossils are poorly represented or at best poorly known. One of the most dramatic changes in Southern Ocean planktonic biogeography occurred near the Eocene/Oligocene boundary (38 Ma). Since then, Antarctic planktonic foraminiferal assemblages have exhibited distinct polar characteristics, marked in particular by low diversity, and this event thus reflects the initiation of the Antarctic faunal and floral provinces. Profound paleoceanographic changes at this time, which triggered the biogeographic crisis, appear to be related to the initiation of widespread Antarctic sea-ice formation, and rapid cooling of deep and intermediate waters, in turn associated with increased Antarctic glaciation. During the Oligocene, planktonic microfossil diversity was low in all groups throughout the world's oceans. In Antarctic waters, the early Oligocene foraminiferal fauna is monospecific (Subbotina angiporoides), while in the later Oligocene two species (S. angiporoides and Catapsydrax dissimilis) were recorded. Calcareous nannofossil assemblages are of low diversity compared with the Eocene. Subantarctic foraminiferal faunas of Oligocene age display much higher diversity than those in the Antarctic, but early and middle Oligoceae faunas still exhibit the lowest diversities for the entire Cenozoic. Siliceous assemblages remain relatively inconspicuous in most regions of the Southern Ocean. The Paleogene-Neogene transition (22 Ma) is marked by a major change in the global planktonic biogeography, i.e. modern patterns developed in which permanent, steep faunal and floral diversity gradients existed between tropical and polar regions; a gradient which has persisted even during the most severe glacial episodes. Oligocene assemblages of low diversity and almost cosmopolitan distribution were replaced by distinctive belts of planktonic assemblages arranged latitudinally from the tropics to the poles. The establishment of the steep planktonic diversity gradients and latitudinal provinces near the beginning of the Neogene almost certainly were linked to the development of the Circum-Antarctic Current in the late Oligocene which effectively separated high- and low-latitude planktonic assemblages. These fundamental global circulation and biogeographic patterns have persisted through the Neogene.During the Neogene (22 Ma to Present Day), Antarctic calcareous microfossil assemblages exhibit persistent low diversity and high dominance, while Subantarctic assemblages are of much greater diversity. The beginning of the Neogene (= beginning of Miocene) heralded the development of the high-latitude siliceous microfossil assemblages towards their present-day dominant role. Siliceous biogenec productivity began to increase. These changes were linked to the initial development and later intensification of circulation associated with the Antarctic Convergence and Antarctic Divergence. The Antarctic Convergence sharply separates dominantly siliceous assemblages to the south from calcareous assemblages to the north. Radiolarian assemblages became more endemic. Relatively warm early and middle Miocene conditions are reflected by slightly higher diversity of planktonic foraminifera and by the presence, in the northern Subantarctic, of conspicuous discoasters in early Miocene sediments. In Antarctic waters, calcareous nannofossils become unimportant as biogenic elements after the middle Miocene. The latest Miocene ( 5 m.y. ago) was marked by northward movement of the Antarctic Convergence, corresponding expansion of the Antarctic water mass, and low diversity of calcareous assemblages. Pliocene planktonic foraminifera seem to be largely monospecific in Antarctic and southern Subantarctic sequences. During the Quaternary, Antarctic waters reached a maximum northward expansion and exhibit highest siliceous biogenic productivity for the Cenozoic. In the Subantarctic, Quaternary foraminiferal diversities are much higher than in Pliocene sequences. Although calcareous nannofossil diversity may be high, only a few species are abundant. Large northward shifts of Antarctic and Subantarctic water masses have occurred during the Quaternary although no southward penetrations have occurred much beyond that of the present day. Several radiolarian and foraminiferal species disappeared or appeared at or close to a number of paleomagnetic reversals during the last 4 m.y. These faunal events, which provide valuable datums, do not seem to be associated with major climatic changes.  相似文献

Rainforest frogs are classified into nine ecological guilds based on features of reproduction, habitat use, temporal activity, microhabitat and body size. The largest ecological differences are between the microhylid frogs and the rest of the frog species. Within the non-microhylids, there are two primary groups consisting of (i) regionally endemic rainforest specialists, and (ii) a more ecologically diverse group of species that are less specialized in their habitat requirements. Most of the regionally endemic rainforest specialists, which includes species in three ecological guilds, have declined or gone missing in recent years. Multivariate analyses of the ecological characteristics of these species show that it is not a single characteristic that isolates those species that have declined from those which have not. The guilds that have undergone significant population declines in the Wet Tropics are all characterized by the combination of low fecundity, a high degree of habitat specialization and reproduction in flowing streams. These results have important implications for the determination of the causal factors in the unexplained global decline of many amphibian species.  相似文献

Summary Smaller benthic and planktonic foraminifera from the clastic sediments of the Pazin Basin (Istria, Croatia) were studied in order to obtain more data about paleoceanographic conditions that existed in the Middle Eocene Dinaric foreland basin. The succession investigated corresponds to the Middle Eocene planktonic foraminiferal zones Globigerapsis kugleri/Morozovella aragonensis (P11), Morozovella lehneri (P12), and Globigerapsis beckmanni (P13). Benthic foraminiferal assemblages from the clastic succession are dominated by epifaunal trochospiral genera suggesting oligotrophic to mesotrophic conditions and moderately oxygenated bottom waters. Planktonic foraminiferal assemblages indicate mesotrophic to eutrophic conditions of the surface waters, with increased eutrophication in the upper part of the section. Water depth, based on the ratio between planktonic and epifaunal benthic foraminifera and on the recognized species of cosmopolitan benthic foraminifera, was estimated to have been between about 900 and 1200 m. The basin was elongated and open to marine currents on both sides allowing good circulation and ventilation of the bottom water.  相似文献

Comparison of results from ODP Sites in the Indian and Antarctic Oceans with published data, reveal that planktonic foraminifera underwent considerable radiation, diversification, proliferation and expansion, throughout the 21 Myr duration of the Eocene, the longest, warmest epoch of the Cenozoic.

Fundamental changes in wall texture and test architecture occurred in equatorial, tropical, temperate, austral and boreal oceans.

One hundred new species appeared, 83 of them in tropical waters, mainly within the first eight of eleven biozones.

Lineages in the evolving continuum of Morozovella in the tropics and Acarinina in high latitudes contributed to the proliferation of muricate taxa.

Cosmopolitanism in the warm oceans of the Early‐Middle Eocene was followed by declining diversity in the Late Eocene when temperate species expanded into the tropics.

Slow taxonomic evolution continued throughout the 13 Myr duration of the Oligocene, within five zones. Provincialism in the cooling oceans was followed by progressive and iterative evolution of new lineages.

Innovative morphologies are illustrated for Pseudohastigerina, Globigerinatheka, Hantkenina, Turborotalia, Globigerina and Tenuitella.  相似文献

The widespread assumption that the origin of polar marine faunas is linked to the onset of major global cooling in the Late Eocene – Early Oligocene is being increasingly challenged. The Antarctic fossil record in particular is suggesting that some modern Southern Ocean taxa may have Early Eocene or even Paleocene origins, i.e. well within the Early Cenozoic greenhouse world. A global analysis of one of the largest marine clades at the present day, the Neogastropoda, indicates that not only is there a decrease in the number of species from the tropics to the poles but also a decrease in the evenness of their distribution. A small number of neogastropod families with predominantly generalist trophic strategies at both poles points to the key role of seasonality in structuring the highest latitude marine assemblages. A distinct latitudinal gradient in seasonality is temperature-invariant and would have operated through periods of global warmth such as the Early Cenozoic. To test this concept a second global analysis was undertaken of earliest Cenozoic (Paleocene) neogastropods and this does indeed show a certain degree of faunal differentiation at both poles. The Buccinidae, s.l. is especially well developed at this time, and this is a major generalist taxon at the present day. There is an element of asymmetry associated with this development of Paleocene polar faunas in that those in the south are more strongly differentiated than their northern counterparts; this can in turn be linked to the already substantial isolation of the southern high latitudes. The key role of seasonality in the formation of polar marine faunas has implications for contemporary ecosystem structure and stability.  相似文献

A field study of prey selection in planktivorous fish larvae   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Summary The food selection of larval fish was studied from field samples collected in two areas that differ in productivity. In the area where planktonic primary and secondary production was high the fish larvae showed a tendency to specialise and they selected the largest prey species available as food; in the area of lower production fish were generalists and they fed equally on all size classes.Abundance of prey was found to be one of the decisive factors in the prey selection of planktivorous fish larvae. Large prey species (calanoids) were selected when their absolute abundance was high but when their abundance was low, small-sized cladocerans were preferred. Visibility and stage of life history were also assumed to affect the mode of selection.  相似文献

In the marine realm, microorganisms are responsible for the bulk of primary production, thereby sustaining marine life across all trophic levels. Longhurst provinces have distinct microbial fingerprints; however, little is known about how microbial diversity and primary productivity change at finer spatial scales. Here, we sampled the Atlantic Ocean from south to north (~50°S–50°N), every ~0.5° latitude. We conducted measurements of primary productivity, chlorophyll-a and relative abundance of 16S and 18S rRNA genes, alongside analyses of the physicochemical and hydrographic environment. We analysed the diversity of autotrophs, mixotrophs and heterotrophs, and noted distinct patterns among these guilds across provinces with high and low chlorophyll-a conditions. Eukaryotic autotrophs and prokaryotic heterotrophs showed a shared inter-province diversity pattern, distinct from the diversity pattern shared by mixotrophs, cyanobacteria and eukaryotic heterotrophs. Additionally, we calculated samplewise productivity-specific length scales, the potential horizontal displacement of microbial communities by surface currents to an intrinsic biological rate (here, specific primary productivity). This scale provides key context for our trophically disaggregated diversity analysis that we could relate to underlying oceanographic features. We integrate this element to provide more nuanced insights into the mosaic-like nature of microbial provincialism, linking diversity patterns to oceanographic transport through primary production.  相似文献

The abundance of interdisciplinary studies of coral reef metabolism means that coral reefs are amongst the best understood of marine benthic communities in terms of the determinants of primary production and nutrient fluxes, and their variation, at different levels of integration. Recent work has extended our understanding of the variation in coral reef productivity at different spatial and temporal scales. Nutrient limitation of production at scales ranging from the organism to the ecosystem is one of the most important topics of research at present, the relevance of which extends well beyond the tropics.  相似文献

The shift in marine resource management from a compartmentalized approach of dealing with resources on a species basis to an approach based on management of spatially defined ecosystems requires an accurate accounting of energy flow. The flow of energy from primary production through the food web will ultimately limit upper trophic-level fishery yields. In this work, we examine the relationship between yield and several metrics including net primary production, chlorophyll concentration, particle-export ratio, and the ratio of secondary to primary production. We also evaluate the relationship between yield and two additional rate measures that describe the export of energy from the pelagic food web, particle export flux and mesozooplankton productivity. We found primary production is a poor predictor of global fishery yields for a sample of 52 large marine ecosystems. However, chlorophyll concentration, particle-export ratio, and the ratio of secondary to primary production were positively associated with yields. The latter two measures provide greater mechanistic insight into factors controlling fishery production than chlorophyll concentration alone. Particle export flux and mesozooplankton productivity were also significantly related to yield on a global basis. Collectively, our analyses suggest that factors related to the export of energy from pelagic food webs are critical to defining patterns of fishery yields. Such trophic patterns are associated with temperature and latitude and hence greater yields are associated with colder, high latitude ecosystems.  相似文献

Phytoplankton are key components of aquatic ecosystems, fixing CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and supporting secondary production, yet relatively little is known about how future global warming might alter their biodiversity and associated ecosystem functioning. Here, we explore how the structure, function, and biodiversity of a planktonic metacommunity was altered after five years of experimental warming. Our outdoor mesocosm experiment was open to natural dispersal from the regional species pool, allowing us to explore the effects of experimental warming in the context of metacommunity dynamics. Warming of 4°C led to a 67% increase in the species richness of the phytoplankton, more evenly-distributed abundance, and higher rates of gross primary productivity. Warming elevated productivity indirectly, by increasing the biodiversity and biomass of the local phytoplankton communities. Warming also systematically shifted the taxonomic and functional trait composition of the phytoplankton, favoring large, colonial, inedible phytoplankton taxa, suggesting stronger top-down control, mediated by zooplankton grazing played an important role. Overall, our findings suggest that temperature can modulate species coexistence, and through such mechanisms, global warming could, in some cases, increase the species richness and productivity of phytoplankton communities.  相似文献

The variability in size of pelagic and demersal marine and freshwater fish eggs is examined. The difference between the smallest and largest volumes, based on published figures for the diameters, is large in many species. In marine species with planktonic eggs, the median percentage difference is just over 100%, and this is similar in species with demersal eggs and in freshwater fish.
The available evidence suggests that geographical differences in egg size are small, but in marine fish there is a well-known seasonal decline in egg size. In herring it has previously been shown that egg size in different spawning groups can be correlated with the timing of the production cycle. A similar correlation can be seen in the seasonal shift in time and locality of spawning, and egg size, of the plaice. Sufficient data on seasonal freshwater fish egg variations are not available, but the time of spawning does appear to be linked with the availability of food for the larvae in both lake and stream species.

The Eocene–Oligocene sea-level fall has been viewed as a primary driver of biological succession. We used Anisogammaridae living in both marine and freshwater habitats to test the hypothesis that Eocene–Oligocene sea-level fall can explain the marine–freshwater habitat shift in the Far East. We obtained three mitochondrial and two nuclear fragments for 138 samples representing 31 species, covering marine and freshwater habitats from latitudes 24 to 50°N. The phylogenetic analyses revealed that freshwater Anisogammaridae is monophyletic. Divergence-time estimation and ancestral range reconstruction indicate that the family originated from a marine habitat in the North Pacific region during the Eocene and separated between marine and freshwater lineages at 38 Ma. The freshwater lineage diversified at 27 Ma, and further diverged into lotic and lentic clades. Our results suggest that the Eocene–Oligocene sea-level fall provided an opportunity for marine-derived Anisogammaridae to shift to new freshwater habitats. The freshwater anisogammarids dispersed from north to south, resulting in the restriction of current marine species restricted to the latitudes 35–50°N and the range of freshwater species in latitudes 24–40°N. Deep divergences within the freshwater lineage were related to the separation of lotic and lentic environments and the opening of the Japan Sea.  相似文献

Climate change is altering the rate and distribution of primary production in the world's oceans. Primary production is critical to maintaining biodiversity and supporting fishery catches, but predicting the response of populations to primary production change is complicated by predation and competition interactions. We simulated the effects of change in primary production on diverse marine ecosystems across a wide latitudinal range in Australia using the marine food web model Ecosim. We link models of primary production of lower trophic levels (phytoplankton and benthic producers) under climate change with Ecosim to predict changes in fishery catch, fishery value, biomass of animals of conservation interest, and indicators of community composition. Under a plausible climate change scenario, primary production will increase around Australia and generally this benefits fisheries catch and value and leads to increased biomass of threatened marine animals such as turtles and sharks. However, community composition is not strongly affected. Sensitivity analyses indicate overall positive linear responses of functional groups to primary production change. Responses are robust to the ecosystem type and the complexity of the model used. However, model formulations with more complex predation and competition interactions can reverse the expected responses for some species, resulting in catch declines for some fished species and localized declines of turtle and marine mammal populations under primary productivity increases. We conclude that climate‐driven primary production change needs to be considered by marine ecosystem managers and more specifically, that production increases can simultaneously benefit fisheries and conservation. Greater focus on incorporating predation and competition interactions into models will significantly improve the ability to identify species and industries most at risk from climate change.  相似文献

Frequency distributions of mammal body sizes in large‐scale assemblages have often been found to show a positive skew. In an attempt to explain this pattern, a model has been put forward which incorporates energetic constraints on fitness and thereby predicts optimal body sizes corresponding to the mode of the distribution. A key assumption of the model is that energy is unlimited. However, if energy is limited, the input of energy into a herbivorous mammal community should influence the shape of the frequency distribution. Thus, I propose that increases in primary productivity will decrease the variation of body size and increase the mean body size in a distribution. So, in low‐productivity environments we should see a predominance of small‐sized species, but with a great variation of body sizes due to limitations of resources (energy). I tested this hypothesis using the herbivorous mammal fauna (rodents, bats and marsupials) in seven biomes of Australia. Because herbivorous marsupials generally are fairly large‐bodied while rodents and bats are small‐sized and because marsupials also have a different mode of reproduction from placental mammals, the hypothesis was also tested on placental mammals and marsupials separately. There was no clear mode for the entire assemblage in any biome, but as primary productivity increased, the variation of body masses decreased and the mean body mass of the distribution increased. Body mass distributions of both placental mammals and marsupials displayed clear modes. Placental mammals also showed an increase in mean body mass. The variation in body mass of marsupials was highest for the intermediately productive biomes. Primary productivity does seem to have some effect on mammalian body mass in this case, but the results here need to be complemented with studies of other assemblages before any general conclusions can be drawn. It is also important to distinguish which taxa are affected in a heterogeneous assemblage like the Australian herbivorous mammal fauna.  相似文献
