It is unclear that we will come to a better understanding of mental processes simply by observing which neural loci are activated while subjects perform a task. Rather, I suggest here that it is better to come armed with a question that directs one to design tasks in ways that take advantage of the strengths of neuroimaging techniques (particularly positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging). Here I develop a taxonomy of types of questions that can be easily addressed by such techniques. The first class of questions focuses on how information processing is implemented in the brain; these questions can be posed at a very coarse scale, focusing on the entire system that confers a particular ability, or at increasingly more specific scales, ultimately focusing on individual structures or processes. The second class of questions focuses on specifying when particular processes and structures are invoked; these questions focus on how one can use patterns of activation to infer that specific processes and structures were invoked, and on how processing changes in different circumstances. The use of neuroimaging to address these questions is illustrated with results from experiments on visual cognition, and caveats regarding the logic of inference in each case are noted. Finally, the necessary interplay between neuroimaging and behavioural studies is stressed.  相似文献

Vaults are large cytoplasmic ribonucleoprotein (RNP) particles of eukaryotic cells, whose considerable abundance and striking evolutionary conservation argue for an important general cellular function. Early studies on vaults focused on the structural features and cellular distribution of the particle and will only be summarized briefly here. In this article, we discuss the molecular characterization of vault components and describe genetic studies carried out in Dictyostelium. The recent finding that the major vault protein is elevated in non-P-glycoprotein multidrug resistant cancer cells has direct implications concerning the function of the vault particle and indicates a potential role for vaults in resistance of tumour cells to anticancer drugs.  相似文献

The anthropometric data of a longitudinal growth study on healthy infants, followed from birth until the age of 4 years and performed during 1995-1999 in The Netherlands, were used to analyze the general growth patterns in terms of height, weight and head circumference, based on z-scores, during the first 4 years of life. The well-known phenomenon where each infant or child tends to decelerate or accelerate its growth velocity depending on its starting position on the reference curve is obvious in this study too. This phenomenon, known as the regression to the mean, is a strong phenomenon especially during the first year. Regression to the mean is calculated for the different age groups as factor. With the given alpha, it is possible to estimate the individual expectation of growth.  相似文献

Identification of the ontogenetic status of an extinct organism is complex, and yet this underpins major areas of research, from taxonomy and systematics to ecology and evolution. In the case of the non-avialan dinosaurs, at least some were reproductively mature before they were skeletally mature, and a lack of consensus on how to define an ‘adult’ animal causes problems for even basic scientific investigations. Here we review the current methods available to determine the age of non-avialan dinosaurs, discuss the definitions of different ontogenetic stages, and summarize the implications of these disparate definitions for dinosaur palaeontology. Most critically, a growing body of evidence suggests that many dinosaurs that would be considered ‘adults’ in a modern-day field study are considered ‘juveniles’ or ‘subadults’ in palaeontological contexts.  相似文献

Vertebrates express two families of gap junction proteins: the well characterized connexins and the recently discovered pannexins. The latter are related to invertebrate innexins. Here we present the hypothesis that pannexins, rather than providing a redundant system to gap junctions formed by connexins, exert a physiological role as nonjunctional membrane channels. Specifically, we propose that pannexins can serve as ATP release channels. This function presumptively is also performed by innexins in invertebrates, in addition to their traditional gap junction role.  相似文献

Grid square distribution maps have been used widely to measure rates of decline and target conservation resources. However, common species that may have many populations per grid square can decline substantially from within squares without being lost from entire squares. In order to quantify this process, fine scale population and habitat data have been collected for the common blue butterfly Polyommatus icarus in a 35 km2 area of fragmented landscape in north Wales. Present day habitat associations, determined from over 2000 transect walks, combined with data on historical and present day habitat distributions reveal that the species has declined by about 74% since 1901. Similar data concerning the species major host plant Lotus corniculatus indicate a decline of 46%. Based on 1 km2 grid maps, neither species have been assessed as declining at all. These results suggest that apparently 'common' species may have declined just as much as many of Britain's rare species: using present methods of assessment these declines are undetected.  相似文献

Nitric oxide (NO) is a gaseous radical with unique biological functions essential for the cardiovascular system, host defense and neuro-transmission. For two decades it was thought that NO was able to diffuse freely across relatively long distances and to traverse major parts of the cell, if not multiple cell layers. However, NO has been proven to be extremely reactive: it reacts with other reactive oxygen species, heavy metals, as well as with cysteine and tyrosine residues in proteins. In accordance, it is now widely accepted that once NO is generated, it is very short-lived and diffuses only over a short distance. This urges for the local production of NO and the localization of NO synthases in the proximity of their downstream targets. This review discusses the highly organized localization of NO synthases, with the endothelial isoform (eNOS) as its main focus, since from this synthase most is known about its subcellular localization and regulation.  相似文献

The question, "What is an organism?," formerly considered as essential in biology, has now been increasingly replaced by a larger question, "What is a biological individual?" On the grounds that i) individuation is theory-dependent, and ii) physiology does not offer a theory, biologists and philosophers of biology have claimed that it is the theory of evolution by natural selection that tells us what counts as a biological individual. Here I show that one physiological field, immunology, offers a theory that makes possible a biological individuation based on physiological grounds. I give a new answer to the question of the individuation of an organism by linking together the evolutionary and the immunological approaches to biological individuation.  相似文献

Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins are produced in maturing seeds and anhydrobiotic plants, animals and microorganisms, in which their expression correlates with desiccation tolerance. However, their function has remained obscure for 20 years. We argue that novel computational tools devised for non-globular proteins might now overcome this problem. Predictions arising from bioinformatics fit well with recent data on Group 3 proteins, which potentially form cytoskeletal filaments, and suggest experimentally testable functions for these and other LEA protein groups.  相似文献
