The stored-product mites are the most abundant and frequent group of pests living on the stored food products in Europe. They endanger public health since they produce allergens and transmit mycotoxin-producing fungi. Novel acaricidal compounds with inhibitory effects on the digestive enzymes of arthropods are a safe alternative to the traditional neurotoxic pesticides used for control of the stored-product pests. In this work, we explored the properties of acarbose, the low molecular weight inhibitor of -amylases (AI), as a novel acaricide candidate for protection of the stored products from infestation by Acarus siro (Acari: Acaridae). In vitro analysis revealed that AI blocked efficiently the enzymatic activity of digestive amylases of A. siro, and decreased the physiological capacity of mites gut in utilizing a starch component of grain flour. In vivo experiments showed that AI suppressed the population growth of A. siro. The mites were kept for three weeks on experimental diet enriched by AI in concentration range of 0.005 to 0.25%. Population growth of A. siro was negatively correlated with the content of AI in the treated diet with a half-population dose of 0.125%. The suppressive effect of AIs on stored-product mites is discussed in the context of their potential application in GMO crops  相似文献

We collected 22,769 adult female mosquitoes, representing 27 species, from light traps in Norfolk, Virginia (2006–2007) and examined them to assess infestation by larval mites. Mosquitoes were parasitized by two species of aquatic (Acari: Arrenuridae: Arrenurus) and three species of terrestrial mites (Acari: Erythraeidae). The prevalence of infestation varied from 0.55% (2006) to 0.17% (2007). The mean intensity of parasitism ranged from 3.6 mites per host (2006) to 1.8 mites per host (2007). The most common host species for aquatic mites was Culex erraticus, while the most common host for terrestrial mites was Anopheles quadrimaculatus. Relationships between biotic and abiotic factors were investigated in an attempt to provide insight into temporal, spatial, and interspecific variation in mite–mosquito interactions. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the mode of attachment for larval mites. While the prevalence of aquatic mite parasitism was correlated for Culex erraticus, the invasive mosquito, Aedes albopictus, was never parasitized through the duration of the study. Amphibian species are known to carry endoparasitic mites. The infestation probability, prevalence, and intensity of mites vary among species and habitats. Mites of the genus Endotrombicula are known to infest African and Malagasy frogs. However, the factors leading to an increase in the probability of mite infestation are unknown. To test for inter‐ and intraspecific differences in infestation probability and its potential correlation with sex, age, habitat preferences, and/or season within a species‐rich West African leaf‐litter frog assemblage, we examined more than 6,800 individual frogs for the presence of mites throughout two independent time increments, 1999–2000 and 2016–2017. We found only members of the leaf‐litter frog genus Phyrnobatrachus to be infested, while other syntopically occurring genera were not affected. Within Phrynobatrachus, only four out of eight species were infested. Mites prevalence differed between species (highest P. phyllophilus, followed by P. alleni), sex (males higher than females in P. alleni and P. phyllophilus), and age (adults higher than juveniles in P. alleni), as well as season (more mites during wet than dry season in P. phyllophilus). The prevalence of mite infestation did not influence mate choice in P. alleni. Increased humidity showed a clear positive effect on infestation prevalence. We also detected a marked decrease in the prevalence of mites from 1999–2000 to 2016–2017, a period during which climatological changes within the study area have been reported with a tendency toward drier conditions. The decrease in mite infestation prevalence over time might be a signal of increasingly drier conditions.  相似文献

Summary Population fluctuation patterns were determined during 1959–70 in wheat bulks in 2 granaries typical of those used on Manitoba farms for 7 kinds of mites. The patterns were bradly similar in the 2 granaries. Outbreaks of all mites except Tarsonemus granarius and Aëroglyphus robustus were unaffected by the prolonged storage of grain; those of Acarus siro and Cheyletus eruditus occurred in unusually high numbers periodically every 2–5 years, whereas Glycyphagus destructor and Androlaelaps casalis were present in relatively low numbers from the first year of storage. A rise in T. granarius population corresponded with grain age and the succession of microfloral species. Tydeid mites occurred periodically.Pricipal component analyses of up to 26 variates including various fungal species on one grain bulk ecosystem provided a kaleidoscopic view of interrelations and dynamics of acarine populations in the grain bulks. The combination of correlated variates of which mites are a part, varied from year to year.Four factors that regulate acarine numbers, particularly those of A. siro and its natural predator C. eruditus, were identified. These are: (i) basic determinants (moisture, temperature, food, and the intrinsic rate of increase of the species); (ii) the main regulator (temperature); (iii) influencers (seed cracks, microflora, dockage, etc.); and (iv) seasonal and cyclic regulators (seasonality in temperature and several density-dependent factors). We investigated the status of infestation by a tracheal mite, Locustacarus buchneri, in natural populations of a Japanese native bumblebee species, Bombus hypocrita, collected on Hokkaido Island and in the Aomori prefecture between 1997 and 2001. We also investigated mite infestation in commercial colonies of the European bumblebee, Bombus terrestris, imported from the Netherlands and Belgium, and the Japanese native species, B. ignitus, imported from the Netherlands, between 1997 and 2001. We detected mites in natural populations of the two B. hypocrita subspecies and in the commercial colonies. Analysis of variations in 535 bp sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene showed that the mite haplotypes in the native populations and in the imported colonies did not overlap in 1997–1999, but in 2000–2001 some mites possessing European CO1 haplotypes were detected in the natural populations of Japanese native bumblebees. In addition, many mites possessing Japanese haplotypes were detected in the imported commercial colonies from Europe. Considering the fact that the Japanese native bumblebees, B. hypocrita, were once exported to Europe for commercialization, these results suggest that bumblebee commercialization has caused overseas migration and cross-infestation of parasitic mites among natural and commercial colonies. However, because the Japanese and European CO1 haplotypes were closely related, there was a possibility that the European haplotypes found in the mites in the Hokkaido Island revealed native variation. To clarify the status of mite invasion, further detailed analysis of genetic variation of the mite, using other genetic markers on additional samples, need to be performed.  相似文献

The Yunnan red‐backed vole Eothenomys miletus (Rodentia: Cricetidae) is an endemic rodent species and reservoir host of zoonoses in southwest China. Based on a large host sample (2463 voles collected from 39 localities between 2001 and 2013), a general analysis of four categories of ectoparasite (fleas, sucking lice, chigger mites and gamasid mites) on E. miletus across its entire range of distribution was made. This analysis identified a total of 71 895 ectoparasites belonging to 320 species (30 species of flea, 9 of sucking louse, 106 of gamasid mite and 175 of chigger mite) with a high prevalence (87%), mean abundance (29.19) and mean intensity (33.69). Of the 18 vector species of zoonoses found on E. miletus, the flea Ctenophthalmus quadratus (Siphonaptera: Hystrichopsyllidae) and chigger mite Leptotrombidium scutellare (Trombidiformes: Trombiculidae) were the dominant species; these are the main vectors of zoonoses in China. All of the dominant parasite species showed an aggregated distribution pattern. Male voles harboured more species of parasite than females. Chigger mites represented the most abundant species group on voles and their prevalence was positively correlated with mean abundance (r = 0.73; P < 0.05). As a single rodent species, E. miletus has a high potential to harbour abundant ectoparasites with high species diversity and high rates of infestation. The sex of the vole affects ectoparasite infestation.  相似文献

The distribution of moulds on stored and field onion and garlic plants infested by bulb mites in Assiut area (Egypt) was studied using PDA medium at 28 °C. Among 40 host samples and the three mite species tested no significant difference was noted in the contamination by moulds. A total of 20 species appertaining to 11 genera were identified from the tested mites and their habitats. The predominant moulds on all samples were “storage moulds” from the genera Aspergillus (A. niger, A. versicolor)and Penicillium (P. chrysogenum, P. funiculosum,and ``field moulds' among which Alternaria, Cladosporium,Fusarium (and its teleomorphs) and Setosphaeria were encountered most frequently. One fungus well known facultative pathogen was obtained: Beauveria bassiana. The tested mites transferA. niger, N. haematococca, R. stolonifer andP. chrysogenum outside their bodies while, A. flavusand A. ochraceus transfer through their digestive tracts along with the foods. Individuals of all mites could survived till the end of the experiment on all fungal species tested except A. niger, A. ochraceus and A. sydowii.Among 48 isolates screened for their ability to produce chitinase, about 83% of the isolates could produce this enzyme. Storage mites are important primary pests but present methods for trapping them are either rudimentary or have several limitations. These prevent effective early detection or reliable monitoring of mites in the food, animal feed and associated industries. The BT Trap is the first trap designed specifically for the detection and monitoring of mite infestation. This trap is made up of a mixed food base lure held in a robust adjustable housing. It is user friendly, requires an exposure period of only 4 days and can be used in a dusty environment. The performance of the BT Trap was evaluated in the laboratory and the mean minimal capture rate of mites was 62%. In a comparative field trial, this trap detected significantly more mites than the bait bag or the fishmeal trap. The traps performance was also assessed in four different types of premises. These were premises engaged in the production of cereal based dry pet food, specialist animal feed, traditional cheese, and in the finished cereal section of a large transit storage warehouse. A total of 17 genera or species of storage and predatory mites was detected in these four premises, with at least seven species detected in each of these premises. This study confirms that the BT Trap was able to function under the rigours of use in the field. It has demonstrated its potential as a useful tool for early detection and monitoring of mites in production premises. A faunistic survey of mites was conducted in many product stores during a 6-year study period, 2000–2005, in Greece. A total of 1,073 samples were taken from 34 Greek counties. The survey was carried out on grains (wheat, maize, oat, barley), flour, bran, manufactured agricultural foodstuffs, dried fruits (figs, raisins), residues and dust, stored in varying quantities in five types of storage facilities (stores of agricultural cooperative unions, farm stores, commercial stores, flour mills and silos). Dominance-frequency analysis and redundancy analysis (RDA) were used to reveal the preferences of the collected taxa. Approximately 55% of the samples contained mites and 65 mite taxa were identified, belonging to 15 families in four orders. Six species, namely, Acarus gracilis Hughes, A. immobilis Griffiths, Caloglyphus oudemansi (Zachvatkin), Suidasia medanensis Oudemans, Tyrophagus perniciosus Zachvatkin and Kleemania plumigera (Oudemans), were new to the fauna of Greece. Five species, Tyrophagus similis Volgin, Blattisocius mali (Oudemans), Neoseiulus barkeri (Hughes), Cheyletus cacahuamilpensis Baker and Storchia robustus (Berlese), were recorded for the first time in stored products in Greece. Lepidoglyphus destructor (Schrank), Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) and Acarus siro L. were dominant or intermediate in all storage facilities examined. Cheyletus malaccensis Oudemans was the most common predatory mite. The highest percentage of infestation (65.3) was recorded in the samples from stores of agricultural cooperative unions. (Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 23 , 672–677, 2008) have theorised that symbionts of large, long‐lived, homeostatic, and well defended social insect colonies should mostly be of low virulence. If the symbionts are rare, i.e. few workers are co‐infected, competition between symbionts should be minimal and they should be selected to avoid over‐exploiting their hosts.
  • 2 Here we analyse the mites that occur on Eciton burchellii army ant workers and note that our findings are consistent with the predictions from evolutionary theory.
  • 3 The mites were species diverse but rare; only 5% of the 3146 workers we examined from 20 army ant colonies had mites. Only one worker was co‐infected by mites of different species and the one relatively common parasitic mite (Rettenmeyerius carli) was limited to only two individuals per ant.
  • 4 We also showed that certain mites are more common on workers in nomadic rather than statary army ant colonies and that different worker castes differed in their infestation patterns.
  • 5 We suggest that the three traits E. burchellii and honey bees (Apis mellifera) have in common (queens with very high mating frequencies, propagation by colony fission, and low number of parasites among the mite species they host) are associated with one another. Colonies that fission are likely to inherit symbionts and multiple mating will promote genetic diversity within colonies, which may help to limit the abundance of deleterious mites.
  • 6 We conclude that most of the symbiotic mites found on workers of the army ant E. burchellii are probably relatively harmless guests, exploiting their hosts for phoresis or, for example, to use their waste deposits.

We determined the food source and water balance properties of the hissing-cockroach mite, Gromphadorholaelaps schaeferi. The food source for mites was identified using Evans blue dye by direct injection into a fasting host cockroach, Gromphadorhina portentosa, or by incorporation into cockroach food. No coloration was observed in mites on dye-injected cockroaches, but coloration was present in mites when only the food for the cockroaches had been stained. Thus, the mites are scavengers of cockroach food, and are not parasitic as previously thought. Our results demonstrate that the mites can absorb water from the air anywhere between 0.84 and 0.93 a v (%RH/100), and wax-block experiments revealed that the mouth is the site of uptake. The mites are normally clumped together on the host, typically in between the cockroach's legs and around the spiracles. Water loss rates for mites in groups (0.16% h-1) were far lower than for isolated mites (0.30% h-1), suggesting a group effect with regard to water balance. Above the transition temperature of 30°C rate of water loss was rapid. The sites occupied by mites on the cockroach's body seem to be highly specific for feeding and absorption of water vapour.  相似文献

The results of a 4 year project investigating species of mites infesting wing primary feathers on 21 species of Passeriformes are reported. The majority of species were identified as belonging to the genus Proctophyllodes Robin, 1877 with one new host record. In addition Pteronyssoides obscurus Berlese 1884 was found on European swallows, also a new host record. A novel method to enable quantification of mite intensities without causing harm to the birds was devised and evaluated. This relied on visual inspection of wing primary feathers and assignment of subjective infestation scores to individual feathers, the sum of the individual scores comprising the primary feather total mite infestation score (PTMIS). Comparisons between species revealed that birds could be grouped into four categoris depending on their infestation intensity with mites. Swallows, sand martins and greenfinches showed the highest prevalence and most intense infestations (mean PTMIS 6.8). Blackbirds, blackcaps, serins, goldfinches, Cetti's warblers, great tits and house sparrows showed moderate levels of infestation with prevalence in the range 60–90.9% but a mean PTMIS lower than in the former group (1.6–5.8). The third group comprised Sardinian warblers, nightingales and short-toed tree creepers and was characterized by a prevalence of mites 40% and a mean PTMIS of 0.6–1.4. The final group, representing wrens, chiffchaffs, fan-tailed warblers and waxbills were without detectable mites, the only exception being wrens on which mites were identified in only three birds of the 32 sampled. These results are interpreted in the light of published information and possible explanations for the observations are discussed.  相似文献

Foliage-inhabiting mites and associated insects were observed over a 3-year period on abandoned apple trees at two sites in southern Ontario. This study included species diversity and seasonal dynamics as well as the total habitat size and its seasonal fluctuations. Due to heavy feeding on the leaves in the early season by the fall cankerworm, at one observation site, the habitat available for foliage-inhabiting mites was regulated so that both the total number and the area of leaves on the tree did not increase significantly until early July. However, the influence of this on the population of the dominant mite species was minimal. The mite community was relatively stable over time. Four phytophagous species, representing a basic trophic level, were fed upon by a group of predacious mites. The phytophagous mites consisted of two rust-mite species (Diptacus gigantorhynchus sp. complex andEriophyes pyri sp. complex) and two tetranychid species (Bryobia rubrioculus andEotetranychus uncatus). On the basis of consistency in seasonal abundance,D. gigantorhynchus was the only prey species which could support the early-season population increase of the predacious mites. Ten species of predacious mites were recorded on the apple trees, nine phytoseiids and one stigmaeid; two separate species of these were common at each of two observation sites:Typhlodromus pomi and the stigmaeidZetzellia mali at one site; and two phytoseiid species,Phytoseius macropilis andAmblyseius finlandicus, at the other. There seemed to be a rather simple and stable prey/predator system at each site throughout the three seasons. Species dominance on these apple trees was investigated for the phytoseiids, especially from the perspective of the issue of one-species dominance.  相似文献

Laboratory studies on predation, reproduction and development were conducted on three phytoseiid species,Typhlodromus pomi (Parrott),Phytoseius macropilis (Banks) andAmblyseius finlandicus (Oudemans). These species were dominant phytoseiid mites on the abandoned apple trees with which ecological experiments were carried out in southern Ontario, Canada. Throught the studies, a rust mite species (Diptacus gigantorhynchus sp. complex), a single consistent prey in the orchard, was used as food. Results showed that the three predators developed well with the rust mites as food, and thatA. finlandicus developed most rapidly and had the highest predation rate. However, this species showed a poor tolerance to low prey densities. These observations suggest that this species is a predacious species and the other two species were more or less general feeders. All species showed the same pre-mating behaviour (Amblyseius-Typhlodromus type), but they exhibited a variety of mating and oviposition behaviours.  相似文献

Traps have been used extensively to provide early warning of hidden pest infestations. To date, however, there is only one type of trap on the market in the U.K. for storage mites, namely the BT mite trap, or monitor. Laboratory studies have shown that under the test conditions (20 °C, 65% RH) the BT trap is effective at detecting mites for at least 10 days for all three species tested: Lepidoglyphus destructor, Tyrophagus longior and Acarus siro. Further tests showed that all three species reached a trap at a distance of approximately 80 cm in a 24 h period. In experiments using 100 mites of each species, and regardless of either temperature (15 or 20 °C) or relative humidity (65 or 80% RH), the most abundant species in the traps was T. longior, followed by A. siro then L. destructor. Trap catches were highest at 20 °C and 65% RH. Temperature had a greater effect on mite numbers than humidity. Tests using different densities of each mite species showed that the number of L. destructor found in/on the trap was significantly reduced when either of the other two species was dominant. Mites as Selective Fungal Carriers in Stored Grain Habitats   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Mites are well documented as vectors of micromycetes in stored products. Since their vectoring capacity is low due to their small size, they can be serious vectors only where there is selective transfer of a high load of specific fungal species. Therefore the aim of our work was to find out whether the transfer of fungi is selective. Four kinds of stored seeds (wheat, poppy, lettuce, mustard) infested by storage mites were subjected to mycological analysis. We compared the spectrum of micromycete species isolated from different species of mites (Acarus siro, Lepidoglyphus destructor, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, Caloglyphus rhizoglyphoides and Cheyletus malaccensis) and various kinds of stored seeds. Fungi were separately isolated from (a) the surface of mites, (b) the mites' digestive tract (= faeces), and (c) stored seeds and were then cultivated and determined. The fungal transport via mites is selective. This conclusion is supported by (i) lower numbers of isolated fungal species from mites than from seeds; (ii) lower Shannon–Weaver diversity index in the fungal communities isolated from mites than from seeds; (iii) significant effect of mites/seeds as environmental variables on fungal presence in a redundancy analysis (RDA); (iv) differences in composition of isolated fungi between mite species shown by RDA. The results of our work support the hypothesis that mite–fungal interactions are dependent on mite species. The fungi attractive to mites seem to be dispersed more than others. The selectivity of fungal transport via mites enhances their pest importance.  相似文献

Aims: We aimed to assess the microbiological quality of Spanish commercial tiger‐nut beverages as well as home‐made samples collected from supermarkets, street vendors, juice bars and ice‐cream parlours located in Valencia. Methods and Results: Microbiological analysis of 44 tiger‐nut beverages samples were carried out according to International Standard Organization (ISO) norms and published works which included the total viable count, Enterobacteriaceae, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, Bacillus cereus, yeasts, moulds, Yersinia enterocolitca, Clostridium perfringens, Vibrio spp. and Listeria monocytogenes. The obtained results indicated that all the commercial samples were below the detection limit for the viable microorganisms. Results of analysis of those home‐made tiger‐nut samples revealed that 67% (16 samples) harboured total plate counts while the rest of samples were free from these microorganisms. Enterobacteriaceae were detected in 62% (15 samples). E. coli were found in only one sample (4%), yeasts and moulds were detected in 62% (15 samples) each, Shigella was found in 21% (five samples); however, all samples were free from S. aureus, Salmonella, Y. enterocolotica, C. perfringens, Vibrio spp. and L. monocytogenes. Conclusions: These results reflected that there exists a rather high contamination level in home‐made tiger‐nut beverages indicating the need to apply correct and strict HACCP system(s) during manufacturing and storage of these food products. Significance and Impact of Study: This study demonstrates the great need to carry out microbiological tests frequently in these products and even more the need to apply correct HACCP system (s). Tiger‐nut beverages are especially well‐known products in Spain, hence it is extremely important to ensure an adequate microbiological quality to guarantee consumers health.  相似文献

Wet weight, dry weight and water contents of emerging honeybees (Apis mellifera L. [Hymenoptera: Apidae]) infested with the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor (Anderson) (Acari: Varroidae) were all negatively correlated with increasing numbers of mites. It was estimated that for every female mite present during the bees' development, the host would lose three percent of its body water. Parasitised bees also emerged with lower head and abdomen concentrations of protein and with lower abdominal carbohydrate concentrations. Lipid concentrations were not detectably affected by V. destructor infestation. The losses of metabolic reserves were not, however, judged to be serious enough to be directly responsible for the high bee mortality and ultimate colony collapse that are associated with the arrival of Varroa in a hive. Some 8.5% of the emerging bees exhibited morphological deformities and deformity was positively correlated with increasing numbers of mites in brood cells. Deformed bees were, however, found in all categories of parasitosis, suggesting that other factors, such as infectious agents, may be involved. Mites that fed on either live or dead U14C- labelled bees acquired the label within 24 h and it was calculated that an adult female mite consumes 0.67 l haemolymph 24 h–1. It was also demonstrated that 14C was transmitted to a previously non-radio-labelled bee when a mite that had been feeding on a labelled bee changed hosts. The level of transfer was above that which could have arisen through contamination of the mites' mouthparts and supports the suggestion that Varroa is an important vector of pathogens such as viruses.  相似文献

Abstract

The literature on efficacy of plant essential oils and their constituents for the management of Tribolium spp. (T. castaneum and T. confusum), instigating infestation of a variety of stored grains and their products is reviewed here. Both species caused significant losses in the diverse food grains and their products through infestation. Essential oils of higher plants showed potential activity in the management of these infestation driven losses. Researchers have found that essential oils and their chemical constituents have significant toxicity against both the species of Tribolium via different modes of action like repellent, insecticidal, ovicidal, larvicidal, pupicidal, ovipositional and feeding deterrent actions. Concerning repellency and in vivo bioassays, few studies have been done with the essential oils against T. confusum, thus, more investigations are required to find the repellent agents against this insect. There are some essential oil-based botanical insecticides which have been proved effective for the protection of food grains from both beetles during storage. These botanical insecticides also exhibited behaviour altering properties against both beetles, thus, reducing the problem of pest resistance which is a problem with conventional insecticides. Therefore, essential oils-based botanical insecticides may be preferred option than conventional insecticides for protecting stored grains and their products against Tribolium infestation.  相似文献

Recent studies have identified Clostridium difficile in food animals and retail meat, and concern has been raised about the potential for food to act as a source of C. difficile infection in humans. Previous studies of retail meat have relied on enrichment culture alone, thereby preventing any assessment of the level of contamination in meat. This study evaluated the prevalence of C. difficile contamination of retail ground beef and ground pork in Canada. Ground beef and ground pork were purchased from retail outlets in four Canadian provinces. Quantitative and enrichment culture was performed. Clostridium difficile was isolated from 28/230 (12%) samples overall: 14/115 (12%) ground beef samples and 14/115 (12%) ground pork samples (P = 1.0). For ground beef, 10/14 samples (71%) were positive by enrichment culture only. Of the 4 ground beef samples that were positive by direct culture, 20 spores/g were present in 2 while 120 and 240 spores/g were present in 1 each. For ground pork, 10/14 (71%) samples were positive by enrichment culture only. Of the 4 ground pork samples that were positive by direct culture, 20 spores/g were present in 3 while 60 spores/g were present in 1. Ribotype 078 predominated, consistent with some previous studies of C. difficile in food animals. Ribotype 027/North American pulsotype 1 was also identified in both retail beef and pork. This study has identified relatively common contamination of retail ground beef and pork with C. difficile spores; however, the levels of contamination were very low.Clostridium difficile is an important cause of enteric disease in humans. It is the most commonly diagnosed cause of hospital- and antimicrobial agent-associated diarrhea in people, and recent evidence suggests that it may be emerging as an important community-associated pathogen (2, 5). In addition to humans, C. difficile can be found in the intestinal tracts of a variety of animal species, including food animals, such as cattle and pigs (7, 10, 13). Clostridium difficile has also been found in retail meat (11, 12, 17), and concerns about the role of food in the epidemiology of community-associated C. difficile infection (CA-CDI) have been expressed (5, 8, 15).Initial studies have reported isolation of C. difficile from 4.6 to 45% of retail meat samples (11, 12, 17). However, all studies have used broth enrichment protocols, which could detect very low spore numbers and provide no information about the number of organisms present in a sample. No studies have evaluated numbers of C. difficile spores in food. While the infectious dose is not known, an understanding of the level of contamination may be an important factor in determining the relevance of contamination of food. Additionally, the use of different methods between studies hampers comparison of results. Recently a study was performed to evaluate different methods for qualitative and quantitative detection of C. difficile (21). This study determined that the detection threshold of enrichment culture could be at least as low as 10 spores/g of meat. It also determined that quantitative culture can accurately determine the level of contamination in experimentally inoculated meat samples, albeit with a higher detection threshold. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of C. difficile contamination of retail ground beef and ground pork using both qualitative and quantitative methods.  相似文献
