The effects were studied of long-term treatment with testosterone metabolites (dihydrotestosterone, DHT, and estradiol, E2, in sc Silastic implants) on preference behavior of ovariectomized female rats for an estrous female over a non-estrous female. For measuring this behavior a residential plus-maze was used which harbored two ovariectomized “stimulus” females on the top of peripheral boxes, one of which was made estrus by injection of estradiol benzoate and progesterone. When both steroids (DHT plus E2) were circulating simultaneously they evoked preference for an estrous female, while neither steroid by itself sufficed. In earlier work with adult male rats castrated on the day of birth, E2 was effective in the absence of DHT. This sex difference, therefore, seems to have arisen before birth. Further, administration of DHT alone caused a profound lack of interest in both “stimulus” females, which cannot be fully explained by the reduced locomotor activity which has been found to be induced by DHT in earlier Studies.  相似文献

Gonadally intact pseudohermaphroditic female and normal female and neonatally castrated male rhesus monkeys were given estrogen treatment as adults and evaluated for attractivity, proceptivity, and receptivity during tests with a tethered stud male. Pseudohermaphrodites were produced by injecting their mothers during pregnancy with either testosterone propionate (TP) or dihydrotestosterone propionate (DHTP). Castrated males had reliably lower attractivity than normal females on all indicator responses shown by the tethered males. Additionally, castrated males showed reliably fewer proceptive responses on 4 of 5 measures than normal females. Receptivity could not be assessed in this situation for castrated males, because tethered males never contacted them unless the castrated males were displaying presentation. No reliable differences were observed between pseudohermaphrodites produced by prenatal treatments with TP or DHTP. Pseudohermaphrodites generally showed reliably less attractivity and proceptivity than normal females and reliably more of these traits than castrated males. Attractivity scores for pseudohermaphrodites were not different from those for normal females until proximity to the tethered male was established. Receptivity was not different in pseudohermaphrodites compared with normal females. Results indicate prenatal androgenization and its developmental sequelae lead to a defeminization in adulthood which, in this testing situation, was principally manifested by a deficiency in the performance of proceptive behaviors. Additionally, defeminization in rhesus monkeys, unlike that demonstrated in rodents, does not depend upon actions of an aromatizable androgen.  相似文献

The major genital responses of arousal in women are vasocongestion, resulting in tumescence of the vaginal walls, and vaginal lubrication, facilitating penile intromission and thrusting. During orgasm, several involuntary muscular reactions occur, the most adaptive being in the outer third of the vagina and the uterus. Uterine suction of the ejaculate seems to occur when the reproductive apparatus is functioning at full efficiency. Coitus may result in reflex ovulation. Indices of female nonhuman primate orgasm thus far proposed include rhythmic vaginal and anal contractions, hyperventilation, involuntary muscle tension, arm and leg spasms, grimacing, and uterine contractions. Orgasm in our species may exist as a result of phylogenetic inertia, not as a novel response selected during protohominid or hominid evolution. A theory for the evolutionary nature of orgasm in women states that the orgasmic vaginal contractions stimulate ejaculation. Reasons for the common asynchrony of this adaptive pattern are the usually lowered ejaculatory threshold because of non-species-typical orgasmic frequency in the male, and the frequently delayed female orgasm because of psychological inhibition and/or inadequate control and development of the pubococcygeus.  相似文献

Schistosome parasites have evolved to produce a number of unique features in their life history; one of these is separate sexes. This has, in turn, led to a novel interplay between the male and female parasite that has been recognized for over 50 years: the growth and reproductive development of the female parasite is in some way regulated by the male schistosome. Early classical and later experimental studies established that the presence of the male schistosome is necessary not only for the initiation of female development but also for the maintenance of her mature state. The male parasite regulates the reproductive development of the female, partly by providing a stimulus that is necessary for the development of the vitelline gland. The cells of the vitelline gland provide nutrients and shell precursors for the egg. Also in this review by Philip LoVerde and Li-ly Chen, it is interesting to note that recent molecular studies have confirmed early work by showing that gene expression in the female parasite is developmentally regulated in a tissue-specific manner and that this gene expression is controlled by the presence of a male parasite.  相似文献

Female philopatry and male dispersal are the norm for most mammals, and females that remain in their natal region often derive foraging or social benefits from proximity to female kin. However, other factors, such as constraints on group size or a shortage of potential mates, may promote female dispersal even when female kin associations would be beneficial. In these cases, female kin associations might develop, not through female philopatry, but through female emigration to the same group. To date, little attention has been focused on the potential for kin-biased behaviour between females in female-dispersing species. Here we investigate the genetic relationships among adults in eight wild groups of unhabituated western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla) at the Mondika Research Center using microsatellite genotyping of DNA collected from hair and faeces. We found that almost half (40%) of adult females had an adult female relative in the same group and average within-group relatedness among females was significantly higher than that expected under a model of random dispersal. This provides the first genetic evidence that females can maintain social associations with female relatives in spite of routine natal and secondary dispersal. In addition, we show that females appear to avoid related silverback males when making dispersal decisions, suggesting that a strategy of non-random female dispersal may also function to avoid inbreeding.  相似文献

Hundreds of thousands of young women are diagnosed with cancer each year, and due to recent advances in screening programs, diagnostic methods and treatment options, survival rates have significantly improved. Radiation therapy plays an important role in cancer treatment and in some cases it constitutes the first therapy proposed to the patient. However, ionizing radiations have a gonadotoxic action with long-term effects that include ovarian insufficiency, pubertal arrest and subsequent infertility. Cranial irradiation may lead to disruption of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, with consequent dysregulation of the normal hormonal secretion. The uterus might be damaged by radiotherapy, as well. In fact, exposure to radiation during childhood leads to altered uterine vascularization, decreased uterine volume and elasticity, myometrial fibrosis and necrosis, endometrial atrophy and insufficiency. As radiations have a relevant impact on reproductive potential, fertility preservation procedures should be carried out before and/or during anticancer treatments. Fertility preservation strategies have been employed for some years now and have recently been diversified thanks to advances in reproductive biology. Aim of this paper is to give an overview of the various effects of radiotherapy on female reproductive function and to describe the current fertility preservation options.  相似文献

Receptivity of female rats has been investigated under chronic experimental conditions. A receptivity index has been worked out for quantitative evaluation. It proved suitable for disclosing stimulatory (2.5 mg noretynodrel, oestradiol propionate) as well as inhibitory (etynodiol diacetate) effects. 2.5 mg noretynodrel has a biphasic effect; causing an inhibition and later an increase in receptivity. Receptivity of untreated female rats is low and can be increased by various steroids; the best treatment was 50 micrograms oestradiol monopropionate administered twice weekly, but this resulted in an inverse mating reaction, with frequent copulations in every phase of the cycle. In untreated females the number of copulations varied widely. Previous deliveries did not influence receptivity and frigidity was also observed.  相似文献

Maintaining polymorphisms for genes with effects of ecological significance may involve conflicting selection in males and females. We present data from a captive population of ruffs (Philomachus pugnax) showing that a dominant allele controls development into both small, ‘female mimic’ males (‘faeders’), and a previously undescribed class of small ‘female faeders’. Most male ruffs have elaborate breeding plumage and display behaviour, but 0.5–1.5% are faeders, which lack both. Females from a captive population previously lacking faeders were bred with two founder faeder males and their faeder sons. The faeders’ offspring had a quadrimodal size distribution comprising normal-sized males and females, faeders and atypically small females. By contrast, ornamented males fathered only normal-sized offspring. We conclude that both founding faeders were heterozygous for a faeder allele absent from the original population. This allele is dominant to previously described genes that determine development into independent versus satellite ornamented males. Unlike those genes, the faeder allele is clearly expressed in females. Small body size is a component of the male faeder mating strategy, but provides no obvious benefit to females. Bisexual expression of the gene provides the opportunity to quantify the strength of sexually antagonistic selection on a Mendelian trait.  相似文献

The CNS sites of action for progesterone facilitation of female sexual behavior are disputed. Among the areas most often cited are the ventromedial hypothalamus and the ventral midbrain. There is also a controversy about whether estradiol may substitute for progesterone for the facilitation of receptive behavior when given systemically or intracranially. We tested VMH and ventral midbrain applications of estradiol versus progesterone for the facilitation of female sexual behavior in estrogen-primed, ovariectomized female rats. Subjects were implanted with bilateral guide tubes aimed at ventral hypothalamic or midbrain sites. Estrogen-primed rats received either 28-gauge insert cannulae filled at the lumen with pure progesterone, estradiol, or cholesterol, or empty tubes, and were tested for receptivity with intact, experienced stud males just before, and 1 and 4 hr after, intracranial hormone administration. Significant estrous responsiveness was seen only in the 4-hr test after progesterone was implanted in the VMN in the first intracranial cannula test. We conclude, in contrast to some previous reports, that administration of progesterone to the VMN is more effective in the facilitation of female sexual behavior than when it is implanted in the ventral midbrain, and that administration of estradiol to either site is ineffective.  相似文献

Mound‐building mice Mus spicilegus exhibit life‐history traits that are unique among the Mus species complex, such as the cooperative mound‐building behaviour that gives the species its common name. In this and other socially coordinated activities, such as those associated with reproduction, these mice should be able to recognize individuals (via discrimination based on kinship, population and species) to mediate their interactions. Our previous studies have provided evidence of population and species recognition in M. spicilegus. The aims of the present study were: (i) to study associations of mice during their reproductive period (in outdoor enclosures), (ii) to investigate whether there is an influence of relatedness of females in these associations, (iii) to determine whether female M. spicilegus are able to make kin vs. non‐kin discriminations, and (iv) to study certain neurobiological correlates of male–female bonds. Stable male–female associations were found in almost all the experimental groups, both those with unrelated and unfamiliar females and those with unfamiliar sisters. Kinship between females did not affect female associations in our enclosure experiment, but in our kin discrimination experiment females did distinguish between unfamiliar sisters and unfamiliar unrelated females. Shared kinship may not encourage cooperative rearing of pups but could enhance cooperation in building mounds where mice over‐winter. Male–female associations could be based on a social bond, as hypothesized from previous laboratory experiments. This was substantiated in this study by increased olfactory bulbar neurogenesis in females that preferred (in two choice tests) their sexual partner 3 weeks after their first mating. Investigations for exploring the frequency and pathogenesis of anaemia were carried out in 164 female pupils of a minicipal grammar school for girls aged from 14 to 20 years. There were lowered haematocrit values below 37% in 81 cases (49%), which were due to iron deficiency in 31 girls. Only in one case a lowered vitamin B12 level was detected and in 8 girls there was a lowered folic acid content in the serum. The frequency of anaemia in girls of school age mainly caused by iron deficiency is emphasized.  相似文献

BACKGROUND:

Hemophilia A (HA), being an X-linked recessive disorder, females are rarely affected, although they can be carriers.

AIMS:

To study the mutation in F8 gene in an extended family with a homozygous female HA.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

All the seven affected members (six males and one female) were initially screened by Conformation Sensitive Gel Electrophoresis (CSGE) and direct DNA sequencing.

RESULTS:

A homozygous missense mutation c.1315G>A (p.Gly420Ser) was identified in exon 9 of F8 gene in homozygous state in the affected female born of 1° consanguinous marriage and in all the affected male members of the family. Her factor VIII levels was found to be 5.5%, vWF:Ag 120%.

CONCLUSION:

In India, as consanguineous marriages are very common in certain communities (up to 30%), the likelihood of encountering female hemophilia is higher, although this is the first case of HA out of 1600 hemophilia families registered in our Comprehensive Haemophilia Care Center. Genetic diagnosis in such cases is not necessary as all the male children will be affected and daughters obligatory carriers.  相似文献

Whether and how individuals choose sequentially among matesis an important but largely neglected aspect in sexual selectionstudies. Here, we explore female remating behavior in the cellarspider Pholcus phalangioides. We focus on body size as one ofthe most important traits involved in mate choice. Large andsmall females (n = 216) were double mated with large or smallmales in all eight possible combinations. All females copulatedwhen virgin, but only 82% accepted a second male. The chanceof a female remating was not significantly predicted by thebody size of the second or first male or by the size differencebetween the two. In contrast, a previous study demonstrateda male size effect in that larger males monopolized femalesuntil egg laying when two males of different sizes were present.We suggest that sequential encounters are more common undernatural conditions than male monopolization of females becauseestimates of concurrent multiple paternity together with observationsin a natural population do not favor mate guarding as the predominantmating strategy in this species. It follows from our study thatthe intensity of sexual selection on male size may be greatlyoverestimated when using a competitive laboratory setting fora species in which females generally encounter mates in a sequentialfashion. Female remating probability was significantly predictedby female size, with large females remating with higher probabilitythan small females. Thus, when mating with large females, malesmay gain higher fertilization success through increased femalefecundity but also face a higher sperm competition risk.  相似文献

This paper reviews the influence of social mechanisms on oestrus and sexual motivation in pigs. The social relations between the animals and the signals they send out can inhibit as well as encourage their social motivation. Social stimuli from both boars and other sows in oestrus tend to induce and synchronise oestrus and ovulation amongst sows. The courting behaviour of boars is also facilitated by social stimuli from other boars. However, when sows are kept under conditions where the social pressure is high, e.g. due to limited space and/or resources, the social stress experienced by particularly the subordinate individuals may inhibit sexual motivation during oestrus. To a large extent this effect seems to be mediated via specific fear reactions towards dominant individuals of sows that have lost many aggressive encounters. For example, fear reduces the sexual motivation during mating and during sexual interactions amongst sows within a group, and fear may thus inhibit their chances of reproductive success. Similarly, fear of humans caused by innate fearfulness or negative handling procedures reduces sexual motivation in the presence of the human handler even when sows are in standing oestrus.  相似文献

Study of the causation of seasonal breeding can be subdivided into a consideration of external or ecological, and internal or physiological, factors. Of the ecological ones, the role of day–length has been most extensively studied. Subjecting appropriate animals to different photoperiods should give fresh insight into mechanisms of the central nervous system. Alterations in day–length may produce changes in the C.N.S. and pituitary quite quickly, say within 24 to 48 hours. But there is still uncertainty about such basic problems as the relative significance of abrupt and gradual changes in day–length for the alteration of gonadal activity; and the existence of an annual endogenous physiological rhythm which may provoke the gonads into activity at the appropriate time. In addition, for some small rodents physical environmental factors apparently are not always equally efficient in stopping breeding in the winter, and it may be that length of breeding season is also influenced by biotic factors, such as the phase of a population cycle. Susceptibility to the effects of short photoperiods ("winter") may be to some extent genetically controlled. Possibly then genotypes allowing winter breeding may be favoured at some, but not other, phases of population cycles.  相似文献

In this review, studies are described indicating that the increase in pulsatile release of gonadotropin releasing hormone that signals the initiation of puberty requires both changes in transsynaptic communication and the activation of glia-to-neuron signaling pathways. The major players in the transsynaptic control of puberty are neurons that utilize excitatory and inhibitory amino acids as transmitters. Glial cells employ a combination of trophic factors and small cell-cell signaling molecules to regulate neuronal function and thus promote sexual development. A neuron-to-glia signaling pathway mediated by excitatory amino acids serves to coordinate the simultaneous activation of transsynaptic and glia-to-neuron communication required for the advent of sexual maturity.  相似文献

Tinea cruris is a dermatophytosis that mainly affects males. Infections in females are rare, and there are no known data on the frequency of tinea cruris in female prostitutes. We describe seven female prostitutes with tinea cruris with on age range of between 19–34 years (mean 25.3). Each prostitute had a mean of 50 sexual partners per month. Four Trichophyton mentagrophytes (57.1%),2 T. rubrum (28.6%), and 1 Epidermophyton floccosum (14.3%) isolates were cultered. Tinea cruris transmission is mainly indirect, but direct contact may serve to transmit the disease in some cases, and the spread of active lesions in prostitutes through multiple contacts among with their clients is possible.
