The phenology, flower morphology, pollination mechanism and reproductive biology of Epidendrum secundum were studied in a semi‐deciduous forest at the Serra do Japi (SJ), and in the Atlantic rain forest of Picinguaba, both natural reserves in the State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. E. secundum flowers all year round, with a flowering peak between September and January. This species is either a lithophytic or terrestrial herb in the SJ, whereas, in Picinguaba, it grows mainly in disturbed areas along roadsides. E. secundum is pollinated by several species of diurnal Lepidoptera at both study sites. In Picinguaba, where E. secundum is sympatric with E. fulgens and both share the same pollinators, pollen transference between these two species was recorded. E. secundum is self‐compatible but pollinator‐dependent. It is inter‐compatible with E. fulgens, producing fertile seeds. In contrast to the population of the SJ, in the Picinguaba region, floral morphology is quite variable among plants and some individuals present flowers with characteristics in‐between both sympatric species, suggesting that natural hybridization occasionally occurs. The anthropogenic perturbation is probably the cause of the occurrence of E. secundum in the Picinguaba region, enabling its contact with E. fulgens.  相似文献

Inferring the factors responsible for declines in abundance is a prerequisite to preventing the extinction of wild populations. Many of the policies and programmes intended to prevent extinctions operate on the assumption that the factors driving the decline of a population can be determined. Exogenous factors that cause declines in abundance can be statistically confounded with endogenous factors such as density dependence. To demonstrate the potential for confounding, we used an experiment where replicated populations were driven to extinction by gradually manipulating habitat quality. In many of the replicated populations, habitat quality and density dependence were confounded, which obscured causal inference. Our results show that confounding is likely to occur when the exogenous factors that are driving the decline change gradually over time. Our study has direct implications for wild populations, because many factors that could drive a population to extinction change gradually through time.  相似文献

Aphids cause much damage to Chinese cabbage in northern China. Over reliance on pesticides have large environmental and human health costs that compel researchers to seek alternative management tactics for aphid control. The component of aphid alarm pheromone, E-β-Farnesene (EβF), extracted from Matricaria chamomilla L., which attracts natural enemies in the laboratory, may have significant implications for the design of cabbage aphid control strategies. The purpose of this paper is to understand the effects of EβF on natural enemies to cabbage aphid control in Chinese cabbage fields. Ladybeetles on Chinese cabbage leaves in EβF released plots and Aphidiidae in EβF released yellow traps were significantly higher than those of in controls. No significant differences were detected in the interactions of different treatments and the two years for all natural enemies. More important, lower aphid densities were found in EβF released plots. Our results suggested that the EβF extracted from M. chamomilla L. could attract natural enemies to reduce cabbage aphids in the Chinese cabbage fields.  相似文献

Recent studies in two species of Drosophila have demonstrated a negative effect of parental age on offspring fitness, including a reduced hatch rate of eggs and larval-to-adult viability. This has led to a call to consider the decline of offspring quality as a function of parental age in theoretical considerations of the evolution of ageing. We have tested whether a decline in egg and larval quality of older mothers is a general feature of senescence by examining it in the cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea. We also tested whether maternal age affected the reproductive potential of daughters. Although maternal age at first reproduction profoundly affected maternal fitness, there was no difference in hatch rate or larval viability between the offspring of young and old mothers. Likewise, the reproductive potential of the daughters of young and old mothers was the same. Thus, while maternal age effects may be important aspects of ageing in some systems, the generality and overall importance for theories of ageing remain unclear.  相似文献

A 7.5 m sediment core from Lake Bolata, a small former coastal liman lake in northeastern Bulgaria, was analyzed for pollen and plant macrofossil content in attempt to trace the changes in the vegetation, human impact and the influence of the Black Sea during the last ca. 6,000 years. Lake Bolata started its existence when the rising Black Sea level reached the elevation of the bottom of the depression. By that time nearly all tree species were already present in this area with the exception of Carpinus orientalis. The comparison of the arrival time of oriental hornbeam at different sites along the Bulgarian Black Sea confirmed the reliability of the local radiocarbon chronology. For the period under study the vegetation of the region around the site can be described as a forest-steppe due to NAP values higher than 40% of the pollen sum. Forests on the slopes of the river canyon consisted of Quercus spp., Acer, Carpinus orientalis, Fraxinus ornus, Fagus and possibly Tilia. Riverine forests formed stands composed of Salix, Alnus, Ulmus, Fraxinus, Carpinus betulus and Vitis as a liana. The vegetation on the Cape Kaliakra plateau, bordering the canyon, was dominated by diverse herbs and most of these could be considered xerophytes. The oldest occupation period belongs to the Eneolithic, documented by the occurrences of Triticum-type pollen at 5570–5170 cal b.p. (3620–3220 b.c.). The next period of higher continuous Cerealia-type values corresponds to 3450–1830 cal b.p. (1500 b.c.–a.d. 120). The macrofossil record chiefly provides evidence about plant communities of aquatics and helophytes.  相似文献

Inter-annual fluctuations in the recruitment rate and size–age structure are typical for marine bivalve beds. Until now there is no common opinion about the causes of this variability. One of them may be related to the adult–larval interactions in mollusk populations. To test this suggestion and to reveal the possible causes of inter-annual instability in bed recruitment level we analyzed the long-term (9–30 years) dynamics of the size–age structure of 22 populations of 9 bivalve species in the White Sea. Inter-annual variability in the successful recruitment was typical of most studied bivalve beds. This phenomenon was apparently caused, on the one hand, by the intensity of molluscs’ intraspecific interactions, and on the other (no less), by the juvenile survival in their first winter. The bivalve stationary beds in the White Sea are likely the exception from the general rule. They can be formed in case of a relatively stable level of annual recruitment with a decrease in intensity of intraspecific competition. However, in this case, the stability of the bed size–age structure can be easily disrupted under unfavourable conditions for spat survival in their first winter.  相似文献

Studies of phenotypic selection document directional selection in many natural populations. What factors reduce total directional selection and the cumulative evolutionary responses to selection? We combine two data sets for phenotypic selection, representing more than 4,600 distinct estimates of selection from 143 studies, to evaluate the potential roles of fitness trade-offs, indirect (correlated) selection, temporally varying selection, and stabilizing selection for reducing net directional selection and cumulative responses to selection. We detected little evidence that trade-offs among different fitness components reduced total directional selection in most study systems. Comparisons of selection gradients and selection differentials suggest that correlated selection frequently reduced total selection on size but not on other types of traits. The direction of selection on a trait often changes over time in many temporally replicated studies, but these fluctuations have limited impact in reducing cumulative directional selection in most study systems. Analyses of quadratic selection gradients indicated stabilizing selection on body size in at least some studies but provided little evidence that stabilizing selection is more common than disruptive selection for most traits or study systems. Our analyses provide little evidence that fitness trade-offs, correlated selection, or stabilizing selection strongly constrains the directional selection reported for most quantitative traits.  相似文献

Populations of Datura wrightii vary in the frequency of plants that produce glandular trichomes, a resistance trait under the control of a single gene. Such variation may be maintained if the production of glandular trichomes is costly in the absence of herbivory, and if selection imposed by herbivore communities varies spatially or temporally. Here, we document costs in the presence of herbivory for established glandular plants relative to established non-glandular plants growing in natural populations from coastal mountain, Riversidian sage scrub, and Mojave desert habitats in southern California. Damage caused by the herbivore community varied spatially, with significant differences in herbivore-specific damage between plants of the two trichome types and among populations within habitats, although not generally among habitats. Plants with greater canopy size and canopy persistence had higher viable seed production than smaller or more damaged plants, but this relationship was statistically significant only for non-glandular plants. However, the relationship between viable seed production and canopy persistence became significant for glandular plants when damage caused by sap suckers, which do not remove leaf area, was pooled with undamaged leaf area. The high cost exhibited by glandular plants leads us to predict that in the absence of any additional, unknown benefits of producing glandular trichomes, the frequency of these plants should decline in all natural populations of D. wrightii. Successful fertilization in marine organisms that release sperm into seawater is potentially limited by the rapid dilution of gametes; cases of severe sperm limitation have been demonstrated in nature. However, recent surveys of naturally spawning populations indicate fairly high fertilization levels in many taxa. The extreme selection exerted by sperm limitation has resulted in numerous adaptations to reduce sperm limitation and enhance fertilization. Thus, most taxa show indications of the evolutionary consequences of sperm limitation even when population level, ecological effects are minimal.  相似文献

To devise effective conservation actions, it is important to know which factors are associated with the population parameters of a declining population. Using mark–recapture methods, we estimated the annual population size, growth rate and survival probability of an ear-tagged flying squirrel population over a 15-year period in a 4,500 ha study area in western Finland. The species is considered vulnerable, but detailed knowledge concerning population sizes or trends is lacking. The population parameters and changes therein were regressed against habitat availability, an indicator of predation pressure, and mean winter temperature (an indicator of climate change), to reveal potential reasons for trends in the population. The best-fit models suggested the annual growth rate to be below one, and on average it was 0.93 (±0.06; SE) across the 15-year period. The survival probability was about 0.22 (±0.03) for juveniles and 0.50 (±0.03) for adults. The population size of adult flying squirrels decreased from 65 (±11) individuals in 1995 to 29 (±6) individuals in 2009. The number of flying squirrels was associated with the amount of available habitat, but the decline in population size was more rapid than the loss of habitat area. If the current decreasing trend in habitat availability continues, the population might become extinct by the year 2020. To halt the population decline, it is necessary to refrain from clear-cutting mature spruce stands until new suitable habitats develop from the maturation of younger forests.  相似文献

Grey partridge Perdix perdix populations were monitored in the years 1991–2004 in ten agricultural areas (100–200 km2 each) located in various regions of Poland. Spring density (call counts in March/April) and parameters describing reproductive success (counts of adult and young birds in coveys found in August) were estimated, and annual survival rate of adult birds was calculated. In the 1990s, the mean spring density of grey partridge in Poland showed a threefold decrease. In 1993 (the year of the highest mean density), from 4.6 pairs/km2 to 20.0 pairs/km2 were found in individual areas; whereas in 2004, there were from 0.4 pairs/km2 to 8.3 pairs/km2. The mean brood-production rate in individual years ranged from 29% to 49% (overall mean 36.8%), the chick-survival rate from 31% to 56% (43.1%), the young production from 1.6 to 2.8 young per adult (2.32 young/adult) and the annual survival rate of adult birds from 25% to 33% (28.3%). The population decrease in the 1990s was connected with the drop of reproductive success, including both the brood-production rate and the chick-survival rate, as well as with the decline of annual survival rate of adult birds. The decrease of brood-production rate and adult-survival rate probably resulted mainly from increased abundance of nest and incubating female predators (particularly foxes). Fluctuations in chick-survival rate were related to weather conditions, but also slight long-term decline was recorded, probably due to more intensive pesticide use.  相似文献

In the present study, we investigate the effects of food quality (with three distinct algal diets) and quantity (high vs. low carbon and nitrogen contents) and competition (with natural polychaete competitor, Marenzelleria spp) on the semelparous amphipod Monoporeia affinis fitness and reproduction. Contrary to other studies on this species, our results showed that amphipod females have the ability to adjust their offspring investment when conditions were significantly altered before mating in terms of food quantity, while food quality was of less importance. In fact, there was only a low beneficial effect on amphipod reproduction and embryonic development of a presumed high quality diatom diet. Also, the presence of a natural competitor did not affect amphipod reproductive outcome. The results are viewed in the context of a dramatic decline observed on the amphipod populations in the Gulf of Bothnia. Though, several plausible hypotheses have been suggested for the decline, including competition, new anthropogenic substances, hypoxia and predation, we hypothesize that the population decline is related to food shortage and malnutrition due to an increased percentage low quality terrestrial carbon (rich in humus) from river outflow into the Gulf of Bothnia. Concomitantly, the bacterial food web was enhanced, which has a lower trophic efficiency. We also suggest that a secondary effect of malnutrition is an increased susceptibility to other types of stressors such as contaminants and parasites.  相似文献

Intraspecific competition has been shown to favor diet specialization among individuals. However, the question whether the competition takes the form of interference or exploitative in driving diet specialization has never been investigated. We investigated individual diet specialization in the isopod Saduria entomon, in relation to forager and resource biomasses in a system that exhibits predator–prey fluctuations in density. We found that individual diet specialization was only affected by the biomass of their preferred prey (Monoporeia affinis) and not by Saduria biomass; diet specialization was higher when Monoporeia biomass was low compared to when there were high Monoporeia biomass. Population diet breadth increased at low Monoporeia biomass whereas individual diet breadths were marginally affected by Monoporeia biomass. Overall, this led to the increase in diet specialization at low Monoporeia biomass. This study shows that predator–prey dynamics might influence diet specialization in the predator and that resource biomass, not forager biomass might be important for individual diet specialization.  相似文献

Plants of red fescue (Festuca rubra), a commercially important turf grass, are infected by the fungal endophyte Epichloë festucae in semiarid natural grasslands, known as dehesas, in western Spain. We used amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers to analyse the genetic polymorphism existing in two natural populations of Epichloë festucae. Linkage disequilibrium and the presence of clonal lineages indicated that nonrecombinant asexual reproduction predominates in both populations. However, most genetic variation detected was found to occur within populations, with only a moderate amount of genetic differentiation between populations (FST: 0.197). Overall, the study suggests that dehesa grasslands are useful reservoirs of Epichloë festucae endophytes, and provides information on population structure which is relevant to design sampling strategies.  相似文献

In England, a severe decline of introduced sunbleak Leucaspius delineatus populations has been attributed to the introduction of the invasive topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva . In France, however, after 4 years of P. parva colonization in a large natural lake, no demonstrated impacts on the native L. delineatus populations have been observed. This suggests that the original impacts observed in England, such as spawning inhibition and high mortality, were the result of an emerging pathogen, the rosette-like agent, hosted by L. delineatus rather than P. parva .  相似文献

Scleractinian corals in the genus Porites are slow growing, can live for centuries, and can attain great size. In these respects they differ from the majority of coral species, which grow faster and live for years to decades. The predatory starfish Acanthaster planci L. feeds on a wide range of coral species including Porites spp., and during outbreaks in its populations, causes high coral mortality and injury over much of the affected reefs. Because they are slow growing and because recent outbreaks of the starfish occurred only 15 years apart, it may be argued that the Porites populations on affected reefs will be sent into a period of prolonged decline. The present study uses a size stage model of the transition matrix type to predict effects of starfish outbreaks of various frequencies on Porites populations. A transition matrix characterizing the mortality and injury caused in different Porites size classes at John Brewer Reef during an outbreak year was determined from field data. Transition matrices for non-outbreak years were constructed on the basis of realistic growth rates and postulated survivorship and recruitment schedules. The medium term (100 years) effects of outbreaks were simulated by alternation of a single iteration of the outbreak matrix with many iterations of each non-outbreak matrix. By varying the interval between simulated outbreaks it was possible to define combinations of growth rate, survivorship and recruitment which were viable for various outbreak intervals. Simulations based on estimates of the initial size frequency distribution, recruitment rates and colony growth rates for the John Brewer Reef population predicted that the population would remain viable in the face of outbreaks every 15 years only if juvenile and adult survivorship were high. However, within the range of colony growth rates known to occur throughout the Great Barrier Reef and at recruitment rates of the same order as those estimated in the field population, it appears that a much wider range of survivorship schedules could lead to parity or even sustained growth in the face of outbreaks recurring at intervals of from 1 to 3 decades. It is suggested that because the key measurable parameters (initial size structure, damage characteristics, recruitment rate and growth rate) are likely to be very patchy at the scale of whole reefs, no general statement concerning the prognosis for Porites would be meaningful. However the model provides a tool by which a standardized evaluation of this type of field data may be made on a reef by reef basis.  相似文献

We present a new idea about the possible effects of human-induced mortality on different age cohorts (i.e., breeders vs. juveniles) in long-lived animals. Our hypothesis is based on Curios idea on the effect of natural selective processes on cohorts to explain age-related increases in fecundity (selection hypothesis). We believe that negative human pressure may modify such contribution to reproduction of good versus low quality phenotypes, altering the genetic structure of the population. Ecologists and environmental managers in general should be aware of how stochastic events provoked by humans may induce changes in the genetic structure of populations.  相似文献
