As Australia decolonizes: indigenizing settler nationalism and the challenges of settler/indigenous relations

This article explores settler nationalism, focusing in particular upon its relations with indigenous peoples and with ideas of Aboriginality. It is claimed that settler nationalism, as a nationalist form, must be studied in its historical specificity. To this end, the article provides an analysis of historical and contemporary Australian settler nationalism. The central argument is that settler nationalism is driven to give some account of, and to come to terms with, the dispossession of the indigenous. Indigenous claims to land and other indigenous rights in the present undermine, threaten or complicate settler associations with land. The article argues that Aborigines remain as a disturbing problem that settler nationalism must find ways to accommodate. It is argued that a new form of indigenizing settler nationalism provides for one form of such accommodation.     

The value of tear film breakup and Schirmer's tests in preoperative blepharoplasty evaluation

The authors published their article on the value of tear film breakup and Schirmer's tests in preoperative blepharoplasty evaluation in 1989. The purpose of this update is to expand the original article in light of refinements and experiences in subsequent years. It was concluded in the 1989 article that the abnormal tear film breakup and Schirmer's tests were not good predictors of possible postblepharoplasty dry eye complications. It was concluded in the review that the anatomy and the history including scleral show, lagophtholmus, negative vector, snap test, previous surgery, increased blinking, dryness, grittiness and pain were more important predictors of postoperative dry eye problems than the ocular tests. The authors' opinion remains so, and they do less preoperative tear film testing and place more emphasis on the history and the anatomy as predictors of potential problems. In this follow-up to the 1989 article, the authors include a survey from several surgeons as to how they evaluate their patients for elective aesthetic blepharoplasty, which in large measure confirms the authors' practice.

The Nordic Anthropological Film Association has existed for fifteen years. It has made considerable achievements in promoting visual anthropology as a discipline in the Nordic countries. The article explores the variety of activities that have taken place in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Iceland during this time. NAFA arranges yearly anthropological film festivals and workshops. It is also the owner of an anthropological film archive that possesses seventy films. Plato's conception of the relations between moral philosophy and medicine

The first part of this article construes crucial passages from the Platonic dialogues as evidence that Plato takes medicine as a model for moral philosophy and as one of the organizing principles for his writing of the dialogues. The second part reflects upon the significance of one of the most debatable implications of the model: the comparison between health and illness, on the one hand, and moral virtue and moral vice, on the other. It articulates 10 illuminating aspects of this comparison and two potentially serious objections to it. The third part of this article examines what the model implies about the roles of medicine and moral philosophy in the political community and about the natures of doctor-patient and philosopher-interlocutor relationships. It highlights Socrates' criticisms of a kind of politics that covers over moral causes of social disorders by means of Band-Aid legislation, and emphasizes that according to the model, both the doctor and the moral teacher confront agents who must cooperate in the process of reform and accept whatever responsibility they have for their conditions.     

‘Shit Happens’: The Selling of Risk in Extreme Sport

This article details the particular commodification of those high‐risk, highadrenalin activities known collectively as ‘extreme sports’. A variety of commercial operators now offer relative sporting neophytes the chance to take part in mountaineering, snow boarding or canyonning adventures that are billed as being ‘high thrill, low risk’. It is the way in which the risk and danger involved in these activities is discursively managed that is of particular interest for this article. The argument developed is that in selling extremity through a range of primarily tourist‐oriented commercial avenues, the very real prospect of death and injury has been stripped from the activity itself. To elaborate this position, this article draws on several sporting disasters, including the much publicised, ill‐fated ascent of Mount Everest in 1996, and the Interlaken canyonning disaster of 1999, as well as the burgeoning literary and media genre—the made‐for‐Hollywood ‘adventure saga’.     

Art education under development in Palestine: de- and repoliticization via universal values,institutional critique,and reflexive practice

This article studies ways in which art education is mobilized to modify subjective and aesthetic performances of Palestinian students, considering debates surrounding depoliticization and development funding in Palestine. It explores the subject matter and critical stance deemed appropriate for self-directed art projects within a Ramallah art school. Moving beyond arguments put forward within existing literature on the depoliticizing impact of aid funding by drawing on ethnographic detail, the article explores how students experience and respond to this education. Despite being shaped by structures of control that arguably encourage depoliticization, many students understood this education as also opening a space for unpicking and critical examination of such structures. The article locates instances in which this repoliticization was invoked by students, in balance with their awareness of the complexity and contingency of this process.     

A logistic model for the prediction of the influence of water on the solid waste methanization in landfills

This article deals with the impact of water content of solid waste on biogas production kinetics in landfills. This impact has been proved in the laboratory thanks to anaerobic biodegradation experiments on paper/cardboard waste samples. A strong dependence with the moisture level was observed for both kinetic rates and maximum methane production. In this article, a logistic model is proposed to simulate the biogas production rate. It is chosen as simple as possible in order to allow for a correct identification of the model parameters given the experimental data available. The moisture dependency is introduced through a linear weighing of the biomass specific growth rate and of the amount of accessible organic substrate. It is directly linked to physical properties of the waste: the holding capacity and the minimal moisture level allowing the presence of free water.     

Ethics and animal welfare evaluations in South East Asian zoos: a case study of Thailand

Concern for zoo animals is palpable throughout society in many countries in South East Asia. It is important to understand problems of animal welfare in order for zoos to make significant improvement in maintaining high standards. With a case study of 3 zoos in Thailand, this article presents results for the first time on how ethics and welfare evaluations are conducted in South East Asian zoos. The study identified several major and minor welfare problems and provided constructive suggestions to zoo authorities, which in turn significantly improved the standards of animal welfare. Thus, the data presented in this article could serve as a model for other zoos to follow animal welfare evaluations locally, regionally, and globally.     

A robust method to detect structural and functional remote homologues

With currently available sequence data, it is feasible to conduct extensive comparisons among large sets of protein sequences. It is still a much more challenging task to partition the protein space into structurally and functionally related families solely based on sequence comparisons. The ProtoNet system automatically generates a treelike classification of the whole protein space. It stands to reason that this classification reflects evolutionary relationships, both close and remote. In this article, we examine this hypothesis. We present a semiautomatic procedure that singles out certain inner nodes in the ProtoNet tree that should ideally correspond to structurally and functionally defined protein families. We compare the performance of this method against several expert systems. Some of the competing methods incorporate additional extraneous information on protein structure or on enzymatic activities. The ProtoNet-based method performs at least as well as any of the methods with which it was compared. This article illustrates the ProtoNet-based method on several evolutionarily diverse families. Using this new method, an evolutionary divergence scheme can be proposed for a large number of structural and functional related superfamilies.     

Teaching calcium-induced calcium release in cardiomyocytes using a classic paper by Fabiato

This teaching paper utilizes the materials presented by Dr. Fabiato in his review article entitled "Calcium-induced release of calcium from the cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum." In the review, supporting evidence of calcium-induced calcium release (CICR) is presented. Data concerning potential objections to the CICR theory are discussed as well. In closing, technical issues associated with the skinned cell model are mentioned. Based on this review article, teaching and learning points are put forth in this article to highlight two concepts: 1) the regulatory mechanisms of CICR in cardiomyocytes and 2) the recognition of contradicting hypotheses and limitations in experimental design. The first concept is certainly an important one for physiology students. The second concept is universally applicable to researchers in all fields of science. It is thus the aim of this article to cultivate a rewarding teaching and learning experience for both instructors and students.     

Single molecule measurements and biological motors

Recent technological advances in lasers and optical detectors have enabled a variety of new, single molecule technologies to be developed. Using intense and highly collimated laser light sources in addition to super-sensitive cameras, the fluorescence of single fluorophores can now be imaged in aqueous solution. Also, laser optical tweezers have enabled the piconewton forces produced by pair of interacting biomolecules to be measured directly. However, for a researcher new to the field to begin to use such techniques in their own research might seem a daunting prospect. Most of the equipment that is in use is custom-built. However, most of the equipment is essence fairly simple and the aim of this article is to provide an entry point to the field for a newcomer. It focuses mainly on those practical aspects which are not particularly well covered in the literature, and aims to provide an overview of the field as a whole with references and web links to more detailed sources elsewhere. Indeed, the opportunity to publish an article such as this on the Internet affords many new opportunities (and more space!) for presenting scientific ideas and information. For example, we have illustrated the nature of optical trap data with an interactive Java simulation; provided links to relevant web sites and technical documents, and included a large number of colour figures and plots. Our group’s research focuses on molecular motors, and the bias of this article reflects this. It turns out that molecular motors have been a paradigm (or prototype) for single molecule research and the field has seen a rapid development in the techniques. Valorizing racial boundaries: Hegemony and conflict in the racialization of Filipino migrant labour in the United States

This article analyses the growth of a new revivalist, internationally orientated Islam in Tower Hamlets. It moves beyond discussions of identity to look at the roles of ideology and socio-economic background, and to assess the effect of the new identities and ideologies on social and political action. It looks at why young Bengalis are being increasingly attracted to Islam, and at how this can benefit both themselves and the wider Bengali community; and it also explores where the impact of the new Islam is less positive, ending with an examination of the limits of its power as a vehicle for radical change in a deprived area of London. The article is based on interviews carried out in 2000 and 2001 as part of a wider historical study of political mobilization of Jewish and Bengali immigrants in London's East End.     

Imprisonment of Juveniles and Adolescents: Deficits and Demands for Developmental Research

It is argued that the investigation of the consequences of imprisonment of juveniles and adolescents requires a developmental point of view because youth incarceration is legitimated only as a developmental intervention. However, before reflecting on the developmental impact of youth incarceration, it is necessary to consider who is sentenced to this punishment because juveniles sentenced to prison represent a highly selective subgroup of their age cohort. Thus, the first section of this article aims at briefly reviewing what is currently known about the development of juvenile delinquency. The second section summarizes the literature on the effects of imprisonment in general. It is concluded that very little is known on the psychological effects of imprisonment on juveniles and adolescents. The third section of the article aims to sketch a theoretical framework for the investigation of the developmental effects of incarceration of delinquent juveniles. In particular, 3 core concepts are focused on, namely coping, identity, and action. Finally, methodological as well as practical recommendations are offered.     

'Who the hell do you think you are?' Promoting religious identity among young Hindus in Britain

This article explores how Hindu activism in Britain challenges our understanding of the relationship between ethnicity and religion. It argues against the prevalent model in which Hindu identity is understood as a natural ‘product’ of ethnic identity development. Instead, this article calls for thinking about current religious activism as a response to multicultural politics, national belonging and the experience of being an ethnic minority. Based on anthropological fieldwork, the article examines the development of an organization that has successfully established Hindu societies across the UK, one that changed from initially being pro-Hindu to one that espouses Hindutva. The analysis of the rhetoric of a pro-Hindu speech reveals the aims of this group to distinguish themselves from other Asians, particularly the Muslim minority. Such examples of religious activism among “diaspora” youth require us to rethink our understandings of the connections between religion and ethnicity.     

Is dynamin really a 'pinchase'?

The motivation for this article was a recent conversation with an author of a major cell-biology textbook who was gratified that the problem of ?pinching off? membrane vesicles from donor membranes had been solved.It was now known, the author claimed, that the large GTPase dynamin was a ?pinchase? severing the necks of budding vesicles.We are concerned that this appealing speculation has been prematurely elevated to cell-biological dogma.Furthermore, by seeing dynamin exclusively as a pinchase we might fail to recognize alternative functions.In this article, we review briefly the evidence that dynamin is a pinchase, discuss some problems with that speculation and show that other possible functions for dynamin may be at least as appealing.     

Gene targeting of retinoid receptors

Gene targeting in embryonic stem (ES) cells has been employed to investigate the role of the retinoid receptors and binding proteins both in the mouse as well as in embryocarcinoma cells. It is a powerful technique for the modification of the mouse genome. With more recent refinements in gene targeting technology, it is now possible to introduce more subtle mutations in the murine genome, as well as to investigate gene function in a tissue and temporally-restricted manner. It should also be possible to modify genes in diverse diploid cell lines, to generate diverse model systems for analysis of retinoid receptor function. In this article, some of the basic principles for gene targeting are described.     

Evocative Encounters: An Exploration of Artistic Practice as a Visual Research Method

The main objective of this article is to discuss a rethinking of knowledge production that involves the incorporation of artistic practice as one aspect of its methodology. The point of departure is still photography as one such practice, and the fact that it is almost entirely banished from mainstream social anthropological methodology and analysis. To acquire a new position for photography within social science research practice, a repositioning of both the researcher and the role of the image itself is sought. It is suggested that a visual methodology based on still photography must move beyond the interpretational boundary of the realist representational paradigm and approach the expressive aspect of the photographic medium. The empirical foundation for this article is the author's experience as an art photographer as well as a photographing social anthropologist in the northern province of Ethiopia, Tigray (Tigre).     

Sorcery in the Era of 'Henry IV': Kinship, Mobility and Mortality in Buhera District, Zimbabwe

Recent studies of witchcraft and sorcery in Africa have described this domain as an all–powerful and inescapable discourse. This article, on a migrant labour society in Zimbabwe, discloses a situation in which this discourse and its interpretation are contested. It shows how existential insecurity, which gives rise to witchcraft accusations, relates to the high incidence of HIV/AIDS–related illnesses and death – euphemistically called Henry IV (HIV). Witchcraft accusations arise within kin–based networks that span rural and urban geographical areas, as it is these networks that people depend upon for their livelihoods. Thus, this article stresses the important link between witchcraft and kinship in a society that is not geographically bound, revealing how witchcraft discourse is assigned a place relative to other social phenomena.

It should work as a pattern for experiments in schools and universities.
