Adult pigeons were subjected to acute cold exposure (-25 degrees C; 30 min). Fully-plumed birds, showed a pronounced increase in the level of FFA in the blood, but not in the liver or muscle. Partially-defeathered (dorsum and pectoral regions) birds, likewise, showed a marked increase in plasma FFA level but failed to indicate any change in FFA levels in the liver or the muscle. It is concluded that even if the mobilized FFA may have supported calorigenic processes in the normothermic cold-exposed pigeon, lipid reserves are unlikely to have served as a significant source of energy for thermogenic functions in the hypothermic (defeathered) bird.  相似文献

The influence of low level red laser irradiation of Quails japanese embryos on lipid peroxidation level and free radicals concentration in the liver of young quails was estimated. It is detected that irradiation of the embryos in the dose of 15 mJ leads to the significant increase of peroxide lipid level and free radicals contents in the liver of one-day quails. In the liver of three-weeks quails an expressed antioxidant effect of red laser light irradiation of embryos is detected. The decrease of lipid peroxidation products and synthesis of ceruloplasmin in the liver of experimental group poultry confirm it. These changes are accompanied with cytochrome P-450 level increase and don't lead to inhibition of energetic system.  相似文献

Adult pigeons were subjected to acute cold exposure (-25 degrees C; 30 min) after which the levels of blood glucose, blood and muscle lactate and plasma lactic dehydrogenase were measured. Partially defeathered (dorsum and pectoral regions) birds, following exposure to cold, showed marked reduction in blood glucose and blood and muscle (pectoralis) lactate. Fully plumed birds, in contrast, showed no significant reduction in body temperature or blood glucose and only moderately reduced lactate levels indicating the effectiveness of the insulative feather coat in maintaining thermal and metabolic homeostasis. The partially-defeathered pigeons exposed to cold showed a two-to-three-fold increase in plasma lactic dehydrogenase activity, which may reflect a molecular adaptation in their calorigenic response to cold.  相似文献

The kidney appears to play a crucial role in both initiating and maintaining the high blood pressure in cold-induced hypertension (CIH). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the changes of renal function and structure in rats exposed to cold for 2, 4 and 6 weeks. Systolic blood pressure increased significantly after 2 weeks of cold exposure and was maintained throughout the whole experiment. Upregulation of angiotensin type 1 receptor (AT1R) expression was seen in the vascular zone and distal tubule after 4 and 6 weeks of cold exposure. This was accompanied by an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and decreases in superoxide dismutase (SOD), nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activities and nitric oxide (NO) content in kidney. Structural changes were also observed in glomeruli, tubules and arteries in cold-treated rats. These results suggest that upregulation of kidney AT1R plays a critical role in the development of CIH, and its interaction with oxidative stress, NO and NOS may be involved in changes of renal function and structure.  相似文献

Adult male Japanese quail were transferred from long to short days. Plasma testosterone and dihydrotestosterone quickly decreased and this endocrine response was followed by a regression of the cloacal gland, an androgen-target organ. After about a month, a spontaneous recovery of gonadal activity was observed in some but not all birds. It was not associated with obvious shifts in the circadian system. The physiological bases of this spontaneous recovery are discussed as well as the detailed relationships between plasma testosterone and cloacal gland size.  相似文献

Anterior pituitary glands from ovulating Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix) were used to investigate variation in sensitivity to chicken luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (cLHRH I; Gln8-LHRH). Grouping the pituitaries by ovulatory stage provided preliminary evidence of changes in sensitivity to LHRH during the ovulatory cycle. Pituitaries taken from quail before the preovulatory LH surge were responsive to cLHRH I, while pituitaries from the other times of the cycle showed minimal response to cLHRH I. Female pituitary glands release less LH than those of males. These data indicate a change in sensitivity to LHRH in the female quail that may be due to changes in gonadal steroids or the pool of releaseable LH from the pituitary.  相似文献

Agonistic relationships established among male Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix) in shortterm dyadic encounters of a round-robin tournament were stable and appeared to be maintained by a form of recognition. The aggressive or submissive behaviour displayed by competitors throughout the tournament did not relate to their circulating levels of luteinizing hormone, androstenedione, 5 α-dihydrotestosterone or corticosterone. However, plasma levels of testosterone were correlated with fighting success in the early phases of the tournament, before agonistic associations were defined. Once relationships stabilized, levels of plasma testosterone in winners declined to values comparable with those of the losers and the qualitatively distinct displays observed in winners or losers were no longer correlated with plasma levels of testosterone. In light of other work, these data suggest that androgens, primarily testosterone, influence the aggressiveness of an individual in initial encounters, helping in turn to determine dominance relationships between opponents. Thereafter, other factors such as learned response biases take precedence. The maintenance of stable social relationships appears to be independent of circulating levels of testosterone in adult male Japanese quail.  相似文献

Heritability, phenotypic and genetic correlations of body weight, muscle weight and skeletal characteristics of Japanese quail males at 8 weeks of age were investigated to obtain basal information on breeding and on genetic monitoring by morphometrical methods. For this study, 221 male progenies were used. Measurements were taken on body weight, muscle weight and four kind of skeletal characteristics (skeletal weight, skeletal length, skeletal width and skeletal height). Heritability estimates were 0.67 for body weight, 0.36 to 0.56 for muscle weight, 0.79 to 0.94 for skeletal weight, 0.35 to 0.77 for skeletal length, 0.17 to 0.32 for skeletal width and 0.41 to 0.84 for skeletal height, respectively. The phenotypic and genetic correlations were found to be highly positive between body weight, muscle weight and skeletal length. A high degree of genetic correlation was observed between femur length, ossa cruris length and ossa metatarsalia length. These results suggest that the body weight, muscle weight and skeletal characteristics can be improved by breeding and that these genetically determined skeletal characteristics might serve for strain identification and genetic monitoring in Japanese quail.  相似文献

The effect of hypobaric hypoxaemia on the concentration of metabolic substrates in the ovine fetus and pregnant ewe with implanted vascular catheters, was investigated. At 120 to 141 days of gestation sheep were subjected to hypobaria (mean fetal carotid PO2 12.7 +/- 0.7 torr; n = 9) or normobaria (mean fetal carotid PO2 22.7 +/- 0.7 torr; n = 11; P less than 0.001). At 141 days gestation mean fetal weight was 3.46 +/- 0.72 kg in the hypobaric group compared to 4.15 +/- 0.51 in the normobaric group (P less than 0.05). Concentrations of glucose in maternal and fetal plasma and fructose in fetal plasma were similar in hypobaric and normobaric fetuses. The concentration of lactate in fetal plasma rose from 1.68 +/- 1.34 to 8.79 +/- 5.8 mmol/l (P less than 0.001) within 24 h of onset of hypoxia, but fell to 3.36 +/- 1.13 mmol/l by day 3 of treatment, though still significantly above the concentration of lactate in the control fetuses (1.47 +/- 0.47; P less than 0.001). There was no significant effect of hypoxia on the concentration of lactate or alanine in maternal plasma. Alanine concentration in the plasma of fetuses subjected to hypoxia significantly increased within 24 h of exposure (0.28 +/- 0.10 vs 0.58 +/- 0.39 mmol/l; P less than 0.01) and remained elevated for the duration of the study. There was no significant effect of gestational age on the concentration of metabolic substrates in either the control or experimental groups. Summary The walls of pre-ovulatory follicles of the Japanese quail were examined at the ultrastructural level for the presence of cells displaying the typical morphological features of smooth muscle cells. These characteristics were found in the cells of the chordae, the tunica albuginea, and the theca externa. Small, elongated cells, containing microfilaments, were observed in the theca of prelampbrush follicles localized in the ovarian cortex. These thecal cells were considered as the putative precursors of the thecal smooth muscle cells of the pre-ovulatory follicle. The difference between the smooth muscle cells of the pre-ovulatory follicle and those in the wall of the most recent post-ovulatory follicle is the contracted state of the latter, which is most evident in the cells of the theca externa. It can be concluded that the cells of the theca externa are smooth muscle cells which are mainly contracted during the ovulatory process. Age-related changes occur in histones of the liver and oviduct of the female quail. In the liver an extra histone band, named HCX, between H2A and H4, is observed that increases with age. In the oviduct, a large complex of histones is seen which is tissue-specific. This complex declines with increasing age. The changes in the histones of the oviduct of adult and old birds in response to estradiol and progesterone are age-related. In the adult, the histone-complex increases after administration of either one of the hormones. In old birds, however, it is seen only after progesterone administration. Thus, the alterations in histones in the birds are not only tissue- and age-related, but also vary in response to steroid hormones.  相似文献

The liver in the white rats subjected to the effect of a low temperature for 80 days (23 h every day, 5-7 degrees C) has been studied by means of a complex of morphometric techniques. The investigation is also performed 35 days and 4 months after the exposure to cold has been stopped. In the animals decapitated immediately after the exposure to cold has been stopped, there is a certain decrease in the liver mass, in the size of hepatocytes, drop in the karyometric indices. The latter phenomenon is also observed in the liver of the animals 35 days after the exposure to cold has been stopped. In 4 months, the part of the binuclear hepatocytes and the nuclear size is greater than in the control.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to investigate the muscle fiber characteristics of the pectoralis major muscle, and its relation to growth performance in the random bred control (RBC) and heavy weight (HW) Japanese quail lines at 42 days of age. The HW line had greater body (232.0 v. 100.2 g, P < 0.001) and pectoralis major muscle (19.0 v. 6.2 g, P < 0.001) weights than the RBC line. Color differences were observed between the superficial and deep regions of the pectoralis major muscle, with the superficial region showing a higher value of lightness than the deep region of the RBC or HW lines (P < 0.001). The percentage of the superficial region in the pectoralis major muscle was higher in the HW line compared with the RBC line (46.2% v. 38.0%, P = 0.017). There were no significant differences in the total fiber number in the superficial and deep regions between the two quail lines (P = 0.718). The HW quail line showed a larger mean fiber cross-sectional area (CSA; 375.5 v. 176.6 μm2, P < 0.001) and type IIA fiber CSA (243.7 v. 131.9 μm2, P < 0.001) than the RBC quail line. The HW line also had greater CSA percentage (60.2% v. 34.2%, P < 0.001) and number percentage (41.6% v. 14.2%, P < 0.001) of type IIB fibers, although there were no significant differences in type IIB fiber CSA between the RBC and HW lines (P = 0.219). Therefore, greater body and muscle weights of the HW line are caused by differences in muscle fiber characteristics, especially the proportion of type IIB fiber and the CSA of type IIA fiber, compared with the RBC line. The results of this study suggest that muscle fiber hypertrophy has more impact on body and muscle weights of the different quail lines than muscle fiber hyperplasia.  相似文献

Blood plasma cholinesterase (ChE) activity is a sensitive indicator of exposure to organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides. Effects of sex and storage of samples were studied as sources of variability by treating breeding Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) with 3 mg of dicrotophos or carbofuran per kg of body weight and comparing blood plasma ChE activities for samples collected at 1 hr postdosage and assayed fresh, after 1 and 2 days of refrigeration (4 C), and after 1, 7 and 28 days of freezing (-25 C). ChE activity of fresh control plasma was 34% (P less than 0.01) higher in males than females. Male ChE activity remained essentially unchanged during storage while female ChE activity increased (P less than 0.05) gradually over time under both storage conditions. In contrast, when plasma ChE activity was inhibited by either antiChE, male plasma ChE activity was depressed further than female ChE (P less than 0.01) and remained constant during storage while female ChE activity continued to decrease (P less than 0.05). These divergent effects of exposure to antiChE compounds and sample storage indicate extreme care should be exercised in use of blood plasma for evaluation of antiChE exposure in wild birds.  相似文献

We examined the distribution of intermediate filaments in early quail embryos in order to determine whether these cytoskeletal proteins play a role in the epithelial-mesenchymal transitions that commonly occur during embryogenesis, e.g., the separation of neural-crest cells from the neural epithelium. The distribution of cytokeratins, vimentin, and desmin was examined in frozen sections of quail embryos at stages during which dramatic reorganizations of tissues take place. All embryonic tissues were found to contain either vimentin or cytokeratins, but the distribution of these cytoskeletal proteins was characteristic neither of the cellular organization (e.g., epithelium vs. mesenchyme) nor of the germ-layer derivation of the tissues. Cytokeratin monoclonal antibodies stained most embryonic epithelia (defined here as being sheet-like tissue with an underlying basement membrane), including epidermis and extraembryonic membranes derived in part from the ectoderm, splanchnopleure and kidney tubules derived from mesoderm, and endoderm. Cytokeratin antibodies did not stain some epithelia, including the neural tube, neural plate, and dermatome/myotome. Whereas the cytokeratin antibodies exclusively stained epithelia, the vimentin antibodies labeled both epithelial (the neural tube, dermatome/myotome, and somatic and splanchnic mesoderm) and mesenchymal tissues (the sclerotome and neural-crest cells), regardless of their germ-layer derivation. In early embryos, antibodies against desmin only stained the myotome and, in 4-day embryos, the heart and mesenchyme around the pharynx. As the distribution of intermediate-filament types did not reflect tissue organization or germ-layer derivation, we propose that the distribution of intermediate filaments in early avian embryos reflects the motile capacity of an embryonic cell and/or the presence of specialized cell junctions, i.e., desmosomes.  相似文献
