Background
Evidence suggests that epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is closely related to coronary artery stenosis (CAS). However, sexual dimorphism may be present in adipose tissue, and its influence on CAS between men and women is controversial. We assessed the relationship between EAT and CAS by sex and menopausal status in patients with suspected angina.Methods
Six hundred twenty-eight consecutive patients (men/women n?=?257/371; mean age = 59.9?±?10.2?years) who had chest pain for angina and underwent coronary angiography were included. CAS was defined as >?50% luminal narrowing of at least one epicardial coronary artery. EAT thickness was measured by transthoracic echocardiography.Results
Of the 628 patients, 52.1% (n?=?134) of men and 35.3% (n?=?131) of women had CAS. The mean EAT thickness was not different between men and women and was larger in patients with CAS (8.04?±?2.39 vs 6.58?±?1.88?mm, P?<?0.001). EAT thickness was independently associated with CAS in both sexes (P?<?0.001). The odds ratio (OR) of EAT for the presence of CAS was higher in men (OR?=?1.43, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.21–1.69) than in women (OR?=?1.24, 95% CI 1.10–1.40). EAT thickness was larger in postmenopausal women than in premenopausal women (7.59?±?2.25 vs 5.80?±?1.57?mm, P?<?0.001) and was independently related with CAS (OR?=?1.24, 95% CI 1.09–1.41). This was not the case in premenopausal women.Conclusion
In patients with suspected angina, an increase in EAT thickness was independently related to the presence of CAS in both men and women, with it being stronger in men. According to menopausal status in women, EAT thickness is significantly associated with CAS only in postmenopausal women.2.

Background
Previous studies have indicated that inefficient energy utilization may play a pivotal role in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). However, whether plasma free fatty acid (FFA), a main energy substrate of heart, has an effect on HCM remains unclear. Besides, several studies have suggested sex-related differences in HCM features and FFA metabolism. Here, we aimed to explore the association between plasma FFA levels and HCM and potential effects of sex on this relation.Methods
A total of 412 patients (age 47.8?±?12.7 years, 243 males (59.0%)) with HCM were recruited. Complete medical history was collected. Echocardiography and cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) were performed. Fasting plasma FFA was determined by clinical laboratory. Left ventricular mass (LVM), maximum wall thickness (MWT), and left atrium diameter (LAD) were assessed with CMRI.Results
The median FFA levels were 0.38 (interquartile range (IQR) 0.27–0.52) mmol/L in men and 0.40 (IQR 0.30–0.59) mmol/L in women. The FFA levels were significantly lower in men compared with those in women (p?=?0.005). Compared with women, men had greater LVM index (LVMI) (96.8?±?37.6 vs. 78.6?±?31.5 g/m2, p?<?0.001). FFA levels in male patients correlated positively with LVM, LVMI, LAD, cholesterol levels, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, heart rate, and systolic blood pressure (SBP). However, none of these variables were significantly associated with sqrt (FFA) in female patients except a borderline correlation of LAD (p?=?0.050). Multiple linear regression analysis was performed in male patients and revealed that HDL-C (β?=?0.191, p?=?0.002), heart rate (β?=?0.182, p?=?0.004), SBP (β?=?0.167, p?=?0.007), LVMI (β?=?0.132, p?=?0.032), and LAD (β?=?0.165, p?=?0.009) were independently associated with increasing FFA levels.Conclusions
In patients with HCM, LVMI, LAD, HDL-C, SBP, and heart rate were independently associated with increasing plasma FFA levels in males, whereas not in females. These results suggest that sex may affect the pathogenesis of HCM through influencing FFA metabolism. And these sex-related differences should be taken into account in therapeutic approaches to influence myocardial FFA metabolism in HCM.3.

Objective
Erythropoietin (EPO) improves cardiac function and induces neovascularisation in post-myocardial infarction heart failure. The aim of this study was to analyse the association between the serum erythropoietin level and coronary collateral development in patients with coronary artery disease and chronic total occlusion.Methods
A total of 168 patients consisting of 117 with coronary artery disease (CAD, (62 with chronic total occlusion (CTO), 55 without CTO)) and 51 with healthy coronary arteries were included in the study. The patients were assigned as coronary artery disease without CTO (group 0), CAD with CTO (group 1: poor collateral development, group 2: good collateral development) and normal coronary arteries (group 3).Results
There was a significant positive correlation between serum EPO levels and the Rentrop scores in angiography (r = 0.243, p = 0.001). Similarly, a positive correlation was found between serum EPO levels and the Syntax scores (r = 0.253, p = 0.001). Echocardiography revealed a negative correlation between serum EPO levels and the cardiac ejection fraction (r = ?0.210, p = 0.006).Conclusions
Serum EPO is a useful biomarker for coronary collateral development in patients with CTO.4.

Background
High levels of triglycerides (TG ≥200 mg/dL) are an emerging risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Conversely, very low levels of TG are associated with decreased risk for cardiovascular disease. Precision medicine aims to capitalize on recent findings that rare variants such as APOC3 R19X (rs76353203) are associated with risk of disease, but it is unclear how population-based associations can be best translated in clinical settings at the individual-patient level.Methods
To explore the potential usefulness of screening for genetic predictors of cardiovascular disease, we surveyed BioVU, the Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s biorepository linked to de-identified electronic health records (EHRs), for APOC3 19X mutations among adult European American patients (>?45 and?>?55 years of age for men and women, respectively) with the lowest percentile of TG levels. The initial search identified 262 patients with the lowest TG levels in the biorepository; among these, 184 patients with sufficient DNA and the lowest TG levels were chosen for Illumina ExomeChip genotyping.Results
A total of two patients were identified as heterozygotes of APOC3 R19X for a minor allele frequency (MAF) of 0.55% in this patient population. Both heterozygous patients had only a single mention of TG in the EHR (31 and 35 mg/dL, respectively), and one patient had evidence of previous cardiovascular disease.Conclusions
In this patient population, we identified two patients who were carriers of the APOC3 19X null variant, but only one lacked evidence of disease in the EHR highlighting the challenges of inclusion of functional or previously associated genetic variation in clinical risk assessment.5.

Background
After coronary stenting, the risk of developing restenosis is from 20 to 35 %. The aim of the present study is to investigate the association of genetic variation in candidate genes in patients diagnosed with restenosis in the Kazakh population.Methods
Four hundred fifty-nine patients were recruited to the study; 91 patients were also diagnosed with diabetes and were excluded from the sampling. DNA was extracted with the salting-out method. The patients were genotyped for 53 single-nucleotide polymorphisms. Genotyping was performed on the QuantStudio 12K Flex (Life Technologies). Differences in distribution of BMI score among different genotype groups were compared by analysis of variance (ANOVA). Also, statistical analysis was performed using R and PLINK v.1.07. Haplotype frequencies and LD measures were estimated by using the software Haploview 4.2.Results
A logistic regression analysis found a significant difference in restenosis rates for different genotypes. FGB (rs1800790) is significantly associated with restenosis after stenting (OR?=?2.924, P?=?2.3E?06, additive model) in the Kazakh population. CD14 (rs2569190) showed a significant association in the additive (OR?=?0.08033, P?=?2.11E?09) and dominant models (OR?=?0.05359, P?=?4.15E?11). NOS3 (rs1799983) was also highly associated with development of restenosis after stenting in additive (OR?=?20.05, P?=?2.74 E?12) and recessive models (OR?=?22.24, P?=?6.811E?10).Conclusions
Our results indicate that FGB (rs1800790), CD14 (rs2569190), and NOS3 (rs1799983) SNPs could be genetic markers for development of restenosis in Kazakh population. Adjustment for potential confounder factor BMI gave almost the same results.7.

Background
The prognostic significance of changes in mean platelet volume (MPV) during hospitalization in ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) has not been previously evaluated. The aim of this study was to determine the association of in-hospital changes in MPV and mortality in these patients.Methods
Four hundred eighty consecutive STEMI patients were enrolled in this retrospective study. The patients were grouped as survivors (n?=?370) or non-survivors (n?=?110). MPV at admission, and at 48–72?h was evaluated. Change in MPV (MPV at 48–72?h minus MPV on admission) was defined as ΔMPV.Results
At follow-up, long-term mortality was 23%. The non-survivors had a high ΔMPV than survivors (0.37 (??0.1–0.89) vs 0.79 (0.30–1.40) fL, p?<? 0.001). A high ΔMPV was an independent predictor of all cause mortality ((HR: 1.301 [1.070–1.582], p?=?0.008). Morever, for long-term mortality, the AUC of a multivariable model that included age, LVEF, Killip class, and history of stroke/TIA was 0.781 (95% CI:0.731–0.832, p?<? 0.001). When ΔMPV was added to a multivariable model, the AUC was 0.800 (95% CI: 0.750–0.848, z?=?2.256, difference p?=?0.0241, Fig. 1). Also, the addition of ΔMPV to a multivariable model was associated with a significant net reclassification improvement estimated at 24.5% (p?=?0.027) and an integrated discrimination improvement of 0.014 (p?=?0.0198).Conclusions

Background
Psoriasis is one of the most common, immune-mediated, chronic inflammatory skin diseases. Proinflammatory cytokines play an important pathogenetic role at a local level.Objective
To assess whether the proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, IL-17, IL-22 and TNF-α are released systemically during psoriasis.Methods
Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from 30 patients with psoriasis and 30 healthy volunteers. Cytokine production was assessed in supernatants using an enzyme immunoassay after stimulation of PBMCs with microbial stimuli. In addition, flow cytometry was used to determine the subsets of monocytes involved and the intracellular TNF-α production in monocytes.Results
IL-17 levels were significantly higher in the supernatants of PBMCs from psoriatic patients after stimulation with phytohemagglutinin. TNF-α production was also significantly higher in cells from psoriatic patients after stimulation with all stimuli, as compared with health volunteers. Similar changes were not found for the other cytokines. A statistically significant difference was observed between patients and controls for inflammatory CD14+/CD16+ monocytes (p<0.0001) and patrolling CD14-/CD16+ monocytes.Conclusion
Hyper-production of TNF-α is documented in psoriasis. These results support the concept that there is a systemic, proinflammatory component in psoriasis.9.

Background
Anorexia nervosa (AN) patients are assumed to express high levels of guilt and envy. Ultimatum game (UG) is a standard behavioral task that focuses on interpersonal behavior when splitting a sum of money between two players. UG studies consistently demonstrate that people tend to decrease their inequity in outcomes, one explanation being that economically irrational decision-making may partly arise from the emotions guilt and envy. We assumed that AN patients would perform excessively fair in UG, reflecting high guilt and envy.Methods
We utilized UG to investigate the characteristics of guilt and envy among 24 Japanese AN patients and 22 age-matched healthy controls (HC). The relation between the outcome of UG and decision strategy confirmed by post-experimental questionnaires was analyzed.Results
As proposer, AN offered a larger amount to the responder compared with HC (p?=?0.002) while, on the other hand, as responder, AN demanded much higher allocation to accept the offer compared with HC (p?=?0.026). Regarding the strategy as responder, AN put more emphasis on fairness and less emphasis on monetary reward compared with HC (p?=?0.046, p?=?0.042, respectively).Conclusions
The results indicate that Japanese AN patients demonstrate strong preference for fairness, with high guilt and high envy. High sensitivity to guilt and envy of AN patients can affect not only their own behavior concerning eating attitude and body shape, but also decision-making in interpersonal situations. Behavioral experimental settings among social situations will enable us to evaluate and help actual decision-making in the real life of patients.11.

Background
One of the microorganisms from dental plaque associated with severe inflammatory responses in infectious endocarditis is Porphyromonas gingivalis. It is a Gram-negative bacteria harvested from chronic periodontitis patients. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) obtained from P. gingivalis promotes the expressions of interleukin-1 (IL-1), IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). Flavonoids are thought to participate in processes that control inflammation, such as the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2).Methods
We investigated the effects of luteolin, quercetin, genistein and quercetagetin on cardiomyoblasts treated with LPS alone or in combination with following inhibitors p38 (SB203580), ERK (PD98059), JNK (SP600125) and PKC (Calphostin C) for 1 h. The kinase activation and COX-2 expression levels were determined at the gene and protein levels.Results
These flavonoids are considered to inhibit the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and the degradation of inhibitor of kappa B-alpha (IκB-α). They also play a role in COX-2 expression.Conclusion
We conclude that the tested flavonoids inhibit inflammatory responses induced by LPS in H9c2 cells.13.

Background
Candidemia is one of the most common nosocomial bloodstream infections. Early diagnosis and antifungal treatment improve clinical outcomes in some studies but not all, with diverse data reported from different institutions. Similarly, antifungal resistance is more common in the USA than in Europe, but there is little data regarding the microbiology and clinical course of candidemia in adult patients in Asia.Aims
(1) To capture species distribution and drug resistance rates among Candida bloodstream isolates, (2) to describe clinical features of candidemia, and (3) to identify factors associated with all-cause mortality, with emphasis on early initiation of antifungal treatment, at a large tertiary University Hospital in China.Methods
In this single-center retrospective study, we identified all patients with candidemia, between 2008 and 2014. Demographic and clinical characteristics, microbiological information, details of antifungal therapy and clinical outcomes were collected.Results
We studied 166 patients. 71 (42.8%) had cancer. Candida albicans was the most frequent species (37.3%), followed by C. parapsilosis (24.1%), C. tropicalis (22.8%), and C. glabrata (14.5%). Antifungal resistance was more frequent in non-albicans strains and especially C. glabrata. Twenty patients received inappropriate treatment with all-cause mortality of 35%. The remaining 146 patients had significantly lower mortality (21.9%, P?=?0.045). Among patients who received antifungal treatment, mortality rate increased with time to appropriate antifungal therapy (AAT): 13.7%, for?<?24 h, 21.1% for 24–48 h, 23.1% for?>?48 h, and 32.4% among patients who received no AT (χ2 for trend P?=?0.039). Initiating AAT more than 24 h after blood culture collection was an independent risk factor for mortality, after adjustment for other confounders (OR 7.1, 95% CI 1.3–39.4, P?=?0.024).Conclusions
Candida albicans was the most frequent cause of candidemia at a large tertiary hospital in China, but antifungal resistance is a growing concern among non-albicans Candida species. The mortality rate of patients treated with ineffective antifungal agents based on in vitro susceptibilities was similar to that of patients who received no treatment at all, and delayed initiation of antifungal treatment was associated with increased risk of death.14.

Introduction
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multifactorial autoimmune disease with heterogeneous clinical manifestations mediated by immune dysregulation.Objectives
We aimed to analyze the metabolomic differences in free fatty acids (FFAs) between patients with SLE and healthy controls (HCs).Methods
In this study, the levels of 24 FFAs, as their tert-butyldimethylsilyl derivatives, in the plasma of 41 patients with SLE and 41 HCs, were investigated using gas chromatography with mass spectrometry in selected-ion monitoring mode.Results
The results showed that patients with SLE and HCs had significantly different levels of 13 of the 24 FFAs. The levels of myristic, palmitoleic, oleic, and eicosenoic acids were significantly higher, whereas the levels of caproic, caprylic, linoleic, stearic, arachidonic, eicosanoic, behenic, lignoceric, and hexacosanoic acids were significantly lower in patients with SLE, than in the HCs. In the partial-correlation analysis of the FFA profiles and markers of disease activity of SLE, several metabolic markers correlated with SLE disease activity.Conclusions
Our results provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between FFAs and markers of SLE disease activity. Thus, this approach has promising potential for the discovery of metabolic biomarkers of SLE.15.

Background & Aims
Oak seedling establishment is difficult and may be partly explained by litter-mediated interactions with neighbors. Litter effects can be physical or chemical and result in positive or negative feedback effects for seedlings. Mediterranean species leaves contain high levels of secondary metabolites which suggest that negative litter effects could be important.Methods
Seedlings of Quercus ilex and Quercus pubescens were grown for two years in pots with natural soil and litter inputs from 6 Mediterranean woody species, artificial litter (only physical effect) or bare soil.Results
Litter types had highly different mass loss (41–80%), which correlated with soil organic C, total N and microbial activity. Litter of Q. pubescens increased soil humidity and oak seedlings aerial biomass. Litters of Cotinus coggygria and Rosmarinus officinalis, containing high quantities of phenolics and terpenes respectively, decomposed fast and led to specific soil microbial catabolic profiles but did not influence oak seedling growth, chemistry or mycorrhization rates.Conclusions
Physical litter effects through improved soil humidity seem to be predominant for oak seedling development. Despite high litter phenolics content, we detected no chemical effects on oak seedlings. Litter traits conferring a higher ability to retain soil moisture in dry periods deserve further attention as they may be critical to explain plant-soil feedbacks in Mediterranean ecosystems.16.

The recombinant, IGTS8, degraded both carbazole and dibenzothiophene at 400 mg/l in 24 h. Maximum carbazole degradation was in 1:1 (v/v) hexadecane/aqueous phase. Anthracene, phenanthrene, pyrene, fluoranthene and fluorine were also degraded without affecting the aliphatic component.Conclusions
Recombinant Rhodococcus sp. IGTS8 can function as a single biocatalyst for removing major contaminants of fossil fuels viz. dibenzothiophene, carbazole and polyaromatic compounds.17.

Background and aims
Plant breeding activities shape the rhizosphere microbiome but less is known about the relationship of both with the seed microbiome. We analyzed the composition of bacterial communities of seeds and rhizospheres of Styrian oil pumpkin genotypes in comparison to bulk soil to elucidate specific microbial signatures to support a concept involving plant-microbe interactions in breeding strategies.Methods
The seed and rhizosphere microbiomes of 14 genotypes of oilseed pumpkin and relatives were analyzed using a 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing approach, which was assessed by bioinformatics and statistical methods.Results
All analyzed microhabitats were characterized by diverse bacterial communities, but the relative proportions of phyla and the overall diversity was different. Seed microbiomes were characterized by the lowest diversity and dominant members of Enterobacteriaceae including potential pathogens (Erwinia, Pectobacterium). Potential plant-beneficial bacteria like Lysobacter, Paenibacillus and Lactococcus contributed to the microbial communities in significant abundances. Interestingly, strong genotype-specific microbiomes were detected for seeds but not for the rhizospheres.Conclusions
Our study indicates a strong impact of the Cucurbita pepo genotype on the composition of the seed microbiome. This should be considered in breeding of new cultivars that are more capable of exploiting beneficial indigenous microbial communities.18.
Objective
To investigate the effects of heat-killed Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 and P25RC clinical strain (derived from an obturated root canal with apical periodontitis) on osteoclast differentiation within an osteoblast/osteoclast co-culture system.Results
Heat-killed E. faecalis significantly increased the proportion of multinucleated osteoclastic cells (MNCs) within the co-culture system. The IL-6 level was significantly increased upon exposure to heat-killed E. faecalis. Gene expression levels of NFATc1 and cathepsin K were significantly up-regulated compared to the untreated control. EphrinB2 and EphB4 expressions at both the mRNA and protein levels were also significantly upregulated compared to the untreated control.Conclusions
Heat-killed E. faecalis can induce osteoclast differentiation within the osteoblast/osteoclast co-culture system in vitro, possibly through ephrinB2-EphB4 bidirectional signaling.19.
