The relationship between head pteridine fluorescence (HPF) levels and age in adult females and males of a common necrophagous fly, Chrysomya megacephala, and effects of temperature and fly sex on the relationship were studied by pteridine fluorescence spectrophotometry. Factors affecting HPF levels in flies were found to include fly age, temperature and fly sex, among which the fly age was the most dominant one. There were significant linear relationships between HPF levels and age both for female and male adult flies at five constant temperatures, i. e. 16°C, 20°C, 24°C, 28°C and 32°C. The relationship between mean rate of pteridine accumulation (FV or MV) and temperature (t) could be well described by a modified exponential equation of FV=0.01288 e(0.2241t‐3.127)+0.3649 (r2= 0.9987) for females and a linear regression equation of MV= 0.0574 t ‐ 0.3637 (r2= 0.9557) for males. Using the information from the experiments at five constant temperatures, three calculated methods as the candidates were developed for accurately determining the age of the fly by HPF levels at ambient temperature. The results revealed that these three methods were suitable for estimating the age only for male flies, but not for female flies. The smallest average error of the predicated age was 2.55 days for males. In addition, how to employ which of these three developed methods for determining ages of male flies in practical was also discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The fat free dry weight or residual dry weight of the thorax (Trdw) increased linearly for the first 10 days of adult life in both sexes of G.pallidipes in the laboratory as their flight muscles developed. Using ovarian dissection to estimate the ages of nulliparous adult females of G.pallidipes , the Trdw was also found to increase linearly for at least 14 days in the field. Significant increases in pteridine fluorescence with age were measured in both laboratory-reared males and females of known chronological age and in wild-caught nulliparous females whose ages were estimated by ovarian dissection. A linear relationship existed between pteridine fluorescence and wing fray category for a wide range of ages of field-caught flies of both sexes. A stationary trap baited with ox odour was selective in that only the hungrier portion of the flies attracted to it actually entered. However, it was not selective in terms of the mean ages of flies caught. Comparisons were made of the age compositions of catches of both sexes of G.pallidipes attracted to a stationary trap baited with synthetic odours or to a mobile electrified net by plotting Trdw values against pteridine fluorescence. Nulliparous females were not attracted to the stationary trap, but were attracted to the mobile bait. Males of all ages appeared to be equally attracted to both. It is concluded that nulliparous females do not respond to host odour stimuli until they are ready to mate, perhaps relying on the energy-conserving strategy of watching for a moving host animal before attempting to feed. Alternatively, synthetic odours may differ from natural host odours in terms of their attractiveness to young females. Males, however, probably exhibit dual sexual and feeding behaviour by responding to an odour-baited stationary trap even when young.  相似文献

Hydrocarbons present on the cuticle surface of adult face flies, Musca autumnalis, were identified by GC-MS and quantified by GC. Hydrocarbons consisted of n-, monomethyl, and dimethyl alkanes ranging in chain length from 23–29 carbons. Also present were monounsaturated alkenes with chain lengths of 23, 25, 27, and 29 carbons. Wild-caught flies were extracted and hydrocarbon profiles determined for both diapausing and reproductive adult males and females. Few qualitative differences were found between males and females in the hydrocarbon profile. Differences in percent composition were found between diapausing and reproductive flies in monounsaturated alkenes, 4 and 45%, n-alkanes, 24 and 37%, monomethylalkanes, 57 and 15%, and dimethylalkanes, 15 and 2%, respectively, for females. A small difference was found in the total amount of hydrocarbon present, 7.3 ± 0.6 and 9.7 ± 1.1 μg/fly, between diapausing and reproductive female flies, respectively. Adult males also exhibited a similar change in hydrocarbon profile and amount between diapausing and reproductive flies. A laboratory strain of face flies originating in Minnesota was also analyzed, and again similar differences were observed in both male and female flies that were kept under a reproductive or diapause condition. Abstract. The effect of sugar feeding on the survival of adult phorid fly Pseudacteon tricuspis is investigated. Flies fed 25% sucrose in aqueous solution continuously throughout their lifespan have greater longevity (mean ± SE longevity: female = 7.9 ± 0.8 days, male = 8.9 ± 0.9 days) than completely starved (provided no water and no sugar solution) flies, sugar-starved (provided water only) flies, or flies fed sugar solution only on their first day of adult life. Completely starved flies rarely lived beyond one day. Provision of water increases longevity by 2 days, and one full day of sugar feeding further increases longevity by an additional 1–2 days. Flies fed 50% sucrose have similar survivorship as those fed 25% sucrose. The temporal patterns of nutrient accumulation and utilization are also compared in P. tricuspis fed different diets: sugar-starved, sucrose-fed on the first day of adult life only, and sucrose-fed continuously. Adult P. tricuspis emerge with no gut sugars, and only minimal amounts of body sugars and glycogen. Although the levels of body sugars and glycogen decline gradually in sugar-starved flies, a single day of sugar feeding results in the accumulation of maximum amounts of gut sugars, body sugars and glycogen. High levels of these nutrients are maintained in female and male phorid flies fed on sucrose continuously over the observation period, whereas nutrient levels decline in flies fed only on the first day of life, beginning 1 day postfeeding. Female and male P. tricuspis emerge with an estimated 12.3 ± 2.3 and 7.2 ± 1 g of lipid reserves per fly, respectively. These teneral amounts represent the highest lipid levels detected in adult flies, irrespective of their diet, and are maintained over the life times of sucrose-fed female and male flies, but declined steadily in sugar-starved females. These data suggest that adult P. tricuspis are capable of converting dietary sucrose to body sugars and glycogen, but not lipids.  相似文献

The dispersal rates of wild and culture cabbage root flies Erioischia brassicae were determined in release-recapture experiments at Wellesbourne in 1971–3. The experiments were concerned mainly with the first 7 days of adult life. The flies, released from nine locations in the area, were recaptured in yellow water-traps. Dispersal was affected by wind, rain and the terrain the flies were crossing. The flies least often recaptured were those released into the host crop when 6–12 days old. The results indicated the following pattern of behaviour. Flies moved little during the first 2 days of adult life but by the third day both sexes had dispersed to c. 100 m from the release point. Flies are known to mate about the fourth day and after this the males continued to disperse at c. 100 m per day for the three subsequent days. ‘Wild’ females from field-collected pupae carried out a ‘migratory’ flight, however, and dispersed at c. 1000 m per day during the fifth and sixth days, the days preceding the start of oviposition. Similar rates of dispersal were recorded from flies released across host crop and non-host crop areas. Some females did not stop at the first crop they encountered. The culture females from the laboratory-reared pupae dispersed only c. one-third of the distance of the wild females. There was considerable intermingling of local populations. The percentage recapture of young culture and wild flies released during the pre-oviposition period of this species was 38 ± 4 and 19 ±4 for males, and 15 + 2 and 8+1 for females, respectively. The dispersal range of the cabbage root fly is probably within a 2000–3000 m radius of the site of infestation.  相似文献

Primary objective: To carry out a preliminary evaluation of subclinical inflammation and its genetic background in young adults.

Research design: Fifty-five healthy Japanese young adults aged 19–27 years (37 males and 18 females, mean age: 22.3 years), and 58 healthy Japanese adults aged 40 to 60 years (21 males and 37 females, mean age: 51.5 years) were included in this study.

Methods and procedures: We measured plasma high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels and screened for the C677T polymorphism of the 5-10 methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR), which is considered a genetic risk factor for atherosclerosis, by HinfI digestion.

Main outcomes and results: Hs-CRP levels of the young adult group were significantly lower than the levels of the middle aged group (0.014±0.030 mg/dl vs. 0.031±0.040 mg/dl, p=0.005). The levels were significantly higher in males than in females (0.028±0.019 mg/dl vs. 0.013±0.010 mg/dl, p=0.008) among young adults. Furthermore, we evaluated the relationship of the C677T genotype and hs-CRP values, but found no association between them.

Conclusions: Although the sample size is limited, our preliminary study demonstrated the profiles of hs-CRP in Japanese young adults. Further investigation will be needed to establish the guidelines for customized school health education using sensitive laboratory and genetic markers.  相似文献

Survival and egg-laying trends were investigated in Mediterranean fruit flies (Ceratitis capitata) adults maintained on a sucrose-only diet, or on a full diet that consisted of a 3:1 sucrose and yeast hydrolizate mixture. In addition, we followed the total individual lipid and protein contents of aging flies in a cohort. Survival trends and life expectancy parameters at eclosion for males and females on full diet and for males on sucrose only were very similar. In contrast, the mortality of females on sucrose only was high early in life, but then slowed down. Egg-laying was ten times greater in female flies on full diet than in flies on sucrose only. Lipid contents in males and females on both types of diets were very similar, and harmonically oscillated with an amplitude of approximately 10 days. Successive crests of lipids tended to be smaller with the ageing of the cohort, and lipids contents significantly dropped at very advanced ages and close to the maximal age of the whole cohort. Protein contents of flies maintained on a full diet were high and stayed at a constant level throughout the entire life of the cohort. Protein levels in males and females on sucrose only dropped drastically during the first days of adult life, but then stayed stable at a low level until advanced ages. We propose that the synchronous rhythmic oscillation in lipid contents of male and female flies seems to be independently set by an internal clock. Protein reserves are allocated according to the access to protein food sources and these levels of protein are closely associated to egg production and mortality. Our results are discussed in view of resource allocation during reproduction and senescence.  相似文献

By using thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), five different pteridines have been quantified in extracts from Pyrrhocoris apterus: neopterin, isoxanthopterin, isoxantholumazine (violapterin), 7-methylxanthopterin, and erythropterin. Biopterin was also detected using HPLC. Pteridines have been analyzed separately in bodies and eyes of the wild type regarding developmental stage and sex. The pteridine content in both bodies and eyes increased from nymphs to 2-day-old adults. After this period, the concentration of pteridines in the eyes of adults remained approximately constant, while in the bodies isoxantholumazine, 7-methylxanthopterin, and isoxanthopterin kept increasing until 20 days. Considering the total amount of pteridines per insect, no qualitative or quantitative differences between males and females have been observed except a lower concentration of erythropterin in female bodies. But when pteridines are analyzed per unit body weight, a lower amount of pteridines is always detected in females due to its bigger size. A new body-color mutant, the yolk body mutant, that goes through developmental colour changes, was also analyzed during development, showing a general deficient accumulation of all pteridines, especially of 7-methylxanthopterin and isoxantholumazine in adult bodies. The effect on pteridine content of three other recessive (white, yellow, mosaic) and two dominant (Pale and Apricot) body-color mutations, has also been studied. Evidence for sexual size dimorphism (SSD) and its possible causes were examined in the endangered Colorado pikeminnow Ptychocheilus lucius, a large, piscivorous, cyprinid endemic to the Colorado River system of North America. Individuals representing 18–24% of the upper Colorado River population were captured, measured, sexed and released in 1999 and 2000. Differing male and female total length‐(LT) frequency distributions revealed SSD with females having greater mean and maximum sizes than males. Although both sexes exhibit indeterminate post‐maturity growth, growth trajectories differed. The point of trajectory divergence was not established, but slowed male growth might coincide with the onset of maturation. Differing growth rate was the dominant proximate cause of SSD, accounting for an estimated 61% of the observed difference in mean adult LT. The degree of SSD in adults, however, was also related to two other factors. Evidence suggests males become sexually active at a smaller size and earlier age than females; a 2 year difference, suggested here, accounted for an estimated 12% of the between‐sex difference in mean adult LT. Temporal shifts in gender‐specific survival accounted for an additional 27% of the observed between‐sex difference in mean adult LT. Estimated age distributions indicated a higher number of older females than older males and more younger males than younger females in the population during the period of sampling. Dissimilarity of age distributions was an unexpected result because the male : female population sex ratio was 1 : 1 and estimates of long‐term annual survival for adult males and females were equal (88%). Future assessments of SSD in this population are apt to vary depending on the prior history of short‐term gender‐specific survival. Without recognizing SSD, non‐gender‐specific growth curves overestimate mean age of adult females and underestimate mean age of adult males of given LT. Assuming age 8 years for first reproduction in males and age 10 years for females, the adult male : female ratio was estimated as 1·1 : 1 and mean adult age, or generation time, was estimated as 16·4 years for males and 18·4 years for females.  相似文献

To better understand breeding conditions to promote reproduction in captive kori bustards, fundamental endocrine studies measuring fecal androgen metabolites in male and female kori bustards were conducted. Feces collected weekly from males and females were analyzed for testosterone using enzyme‐linked immunoassay. Results from adult males (n = 5), adult females (n = 10), immature males (n = 10), and immature females (n = 10) revealed seasonally elevated testosterone concentrations in fertile, but not nonfertile adult males and females (P > 0.05). Adult females that were not maintained in a breeding group, or that did not produce eggs, did not demonstrate increases in testosterone compared to egg laying counterparts. In males, but not females, seasonal testosterone increases were accompanied by weight gain. Peaks in male fecal androgen metabolites ranged from 10‐ to 22‐fold higher than nonbreeding season (181.5 ± 19.1 vs. 17.0 ± 0.94 ng/g; P < 0.05). Mean breeding season values for adult males were 83.6 ± 6.1 ng/g vs. nonbreeding season values of 12.3 ± 0.73 ng/g (P < 0.05). In females, average breeding season testosterone concentrations were approximately 4‐fold higher than nonbreeding season (55.9 ± 6.0 vs. 14.5 ± 1.8 ng/g), with peaks 10‐ to 30‐fold higher. Results show that noninvasive fecal androgen metabolite analysis can provide a means of predicting fertility potential of male and female kori bustards and might be utilized to assess effects of modifying captive environments to promote reproduction in this species. Reproductive characteristics of siahmahi, Capoeta damascina (Valenciennes, 1842), a native cyprinid in the Zayandeh‐Roud River, were investigated by monthly sampling from March 2007 to April 2008. Among 689 specimens captured, the overall sex ratio was 1 : 1.57 (males : females). Males matured at age 2+. Females matured between ages 4 and 6, with 100% maturity at age 7+. Based on the gonadosomatic index (GSI), the reproductive period peaked between May and June. Histological and macroscopic characteristics of the gonad indicated the species to be group‐synchronous. Absolute fecundity varied greatly with female size, ranging 2520 to 72 650 (mean 24 800 ± 17 800) eggs for females 25.5–54.2 cm TL and weighing 320–2340 g. Fecundity increased with fish age, averages being 9446 ± 8028 for 4+ old females and 54 503 ± 13 803 eggs in mature 8+ year old females.  相似文献

Abstract

Annual survival by age, sex and population size and structure were estimated for bellbirds (Anthornis melanura) from a banding study undertaken on 66 ha Aorangi Island, the Poor Knights Islands, during the period 1978–86. The most parsimonious model showed that survival varied little with age and between years, and survival of males was significantly greater than that of females. Recapture probabilities of males and females were similar, but did vary with age and among years. There was a greater proportion of adult males than adult females and sub‐adult males and females in the population, and among adults the male bias in the population was greater during the breeding season than at other times of the year. The high density of bellbirds on the Poor Knights and larger size of males may explain the reduced survival of females relative to that of males.  相似文献

Four size classes of both sexes of laboratory-cultured Streptocephalus proboscideus (post-metanauplii 4.7±0.4; juvenile virgins 8.7±0.7; adults I 13.8±0.9, and adults II 22.07±1.1 mm) were fed five concentrations (20 to 320 ml−1) of Anuraeopsis fissa, or six concentrations (20 to 640 ml−1) in adults I and adults II, for 30 minutes. Post-metanauplii consumed at maximum 66±9 rotifers ind.−1 min.−1 (mean±S.D.) while the largest adult females maximally ingested 347±37 rotifers min.−1. Regardless of predator size and sex, prey consumption was dependent on prey density. Functional response curves either plateaued or declined at 320 prey ml−1 in post-metanauplii, juveniles and adults I, and at 640 ml−1 in adults II. Females consumed c. 40% more prey than males. On a daily basis, adult II females consumed up to 1.05 mg rotifer dry weight (10% of their own body weight) while post-metanauplii consumed up to 0.2 mg DW (100% of their body weight). Intermediate stages had intermediate consumption rates. Filtration rates indicated that a fully grown S. proboscideus may filter as much as 2 1 of water per day, suggesting that fairy shrimps, in their natural environment, may often be food-limited.  相似文献

Age, growth, reproduction and mortality of Scardinius acarnanicus, an endemic cyprinid fish from central and western Greece, were investigated in two contrasting environments, the eutrophic Lake Lysimachia and the oligotrophic to mesotrophic Lake Trichonis. Maximum ages observed were 7+ for males and 10+ for females in Lake Lysimachia and 8+ for males and females in Lake Trichonis. Scardinius acarnanicus grew allometrically (slope of fork length–somatic weight regressions >3) and relatively rapidly until age 2 or 3 years, then slowed at a time coincident with maturation. Total instantaneous mortality rates of fish from Lake Trichonis were higher than in Lake Lysimachia. Scardinius acarnanicus is a multiple spawner; monthly values of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) indicated that spawning occurred mainly in April. Mean egg diameter in Lake Lysimachia was 1.54 ± 0.2 and 1.28 ± 0.16 mm in Lake Thrichonis. In Lake Lysimachia, the population sex ratio departed markedly from 1 : 1; females were more abundant at ages >3 and the overall male : female ratio was 1 : 1.47. In Lake Trichonis, females were more abundant at ages >6; the overall male : female ratio was 1 : 1.16, not significantly different from a 1 : 1 ratio.  相似文献

Though traps are used widely to sample phytophagous insects for research or management purposes, and recently in aging research, possible bias stemming from differential response of individuals of various ages to traps has never been examined. In this paper, we tested the response of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) males and females of four ages (spanning from 1 to 40 days) to McPhail-type traps baited with a synthetic food attractant in field cages and found that the probability of trapping was significantly influenced by age. The type of food on which flies were maintained before testing (sugar or protein) also had a strong effect and interacted with age. In another experiment, we collected wild C. capitata adults of unknown age using 1–3 methods and then reared them in the laboratory until death. The survival schedules of these flies were subsequently used in a life table assay to infer their age at the time of capture. Results showed that on a single sampling date, males captured in traps baited with a food attractant were younger compared with males aspirated from fruiting host trees, or males captured in traps baited with a sex attractant. Likewise, females captured in food-baited traps were younger compared with aspirated females. In addition to providing the first evidence of age-dependent sampling bias for a phytophagous insect species, this paper also provides a novel approach to estimate the differences in the age composition of samples collected with different techniques. These findings are of utmost importance for several categories of insects, medically important groups notwithstanding.  相似文献

Eggs, larvae, pupae and adults of the large narcissus fly (Merodon equestris) were reared at a series of constant temperatures between 9–24°C. Egg development required from 37 days at 9°C to 7 days at 21.5°C. The low-temperature threshold for development was 6.7°C. Larvae reared at 1424°C were fully-grown after 18 weeks, but it took much longer for such insects to pupate, and adult flies emerged only after about 45 weeks of development. Large narcissus flies enter diapause during the larval stage and overwinter as fully-fed larvae, forming pupae in the following spring. Post-winter pupation and pupal development took from 169 days at 10°C to 36 days at 21.5°C. Of this, pupal development required from 91 days at 10°C to 19 days at 21.5°C. The low-temperature threshold for post-winter pupation and pupal development was 7.1°C, and for pupal development alone, 7.2°C. Females maintained at or below 19°C laid few eggs, whereas some females kept at or above 21.5°C laid more than 100 eggs (mean 69 ± 36). Approximately 50% of females maintained at or above 21.5°C laid less than 10 eggs during their lifetime. The mean egg-laying time was 6 to 9 days. Although temperatures at or below 19°C inhibited mating, once a female had mated, such temperatures did not prevent oviposition.  相似文献

Two larval instars of Carcinops pumilio (Erichson) were identified from a frequency distribution of the head capsule measurements. The total developmental time from egg to adult emergence averaged 20.5 ± 0.1 days at 30 °C. The 2nd instar was the longest, accounting for 39% of the total development time. The 1st instar larvae sustained the highest mortality of 26% whilst there was no mortality in the pupal stage. The immature stages sustained about 50% mortality before adult emergence. The adult females of C. pumilio can live for 140 days and the rate of survival was high in the young adults but decreased as the beetles aged. Newly emerged adults survived for 25.5 ± 0.4 days without feeding. The sex ratio was 0.48 females: 0.52 males. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) was 0.065, the generation time (T) was 50.019 days and the net reproduction rate (Ro) was 20.191.  相似文献

Freshly collected individuals of Orchestia gammarellus from the supralittoral zone of Ghar El Melh lagoon (Northern of Tunisia) were housed in spring in a controlled-environment cabinet. Locomotor activity rhythm of this species was recorded in spring, at a constant temperature of 18 ± 0.5 °C. In the first experiment, juveniles and adults specimens were kept under light-dark cycle in phase with the natural diel cycle. In the two other experiments (males/females and mixed/unmixed groups), individuals of O. gammarellus were maintained under constant darkness. According to double-plotted actograms, waveforms and periodogram analysis, results revealed different locomotor pattern. However, locomotor rhythm of juveniles was more stable than adults. Also, the locomotor activity rhythm of groups was more defined than that of the isolated individuals. Moreover, the activity of mixed groups as well as unmixed groups was more pronounced than the activity of the isolated individuals. Furthermore, results showed no significant difference between locomotor rhythm pattern of males and females of this species.  相似文献

The relative concentrations of catecholamine in the nervous system of the entomophilic nematode Romanomermis culicivorax were measured under different experimental conditions by a glyoxylic acid-induced fluorescence procedure. A greater concentration of catecholamine was recorded in the nervous system of adult males and females than in postparasitic juveniles. A higher concentration of catecholamine occurred in adults maintained in physical contact with the opposite sex than in those maintained in isolation. Adult males maintained with females in the same aqueous medium but physically separated by a barrier displayed a greater concentration of catecholamine in their nervous systems than did males maintained in isolation, but the catecholamine fluorescence intensity of such males was less than in males allowed physical contact with females. In adult males, the fluorescence intensity of catecholamine declined progressively during and after copulation. In adult females, the intensity of catecholamine remained constant before, during, and after copulation. Catecholamine(s) may play a role in regulating copulatory behavior, egg production, or oviposition.  相似文献

The eyes of stalk-eyed flies (Diopsidae) are positioned at the end of rigid peduncles projected laterally from the head. In dimorphic species the eye-stalks of males exceed the eye-stalks of females and can exceed body length. Eye-stalk length is sexually selected in males improving male reproductive success. We tested whether the long eye-stalks have a negative effect on free-flight and aerial turning behavior by analyzing the morphology and free-flight trajectories of male and female Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni. At flight posture the mass-moment-of-inertia for rotation about a vertical axis was 1.49-fold higher in males. Males also showed a 5% increase in wing length compared to females. During free-flight females made larger turns than males (54 ± 31.4 vs. 49 ± 36.2°, t test, P < 0.033) and flew faster while turning (9.4 ± 5.45 vs. 8.4 ± 6.17 cm s−1, ANOVA, P < 0.021). However, turning performance of both sexes overlapped, and turn rate in males even marginally exceeded turn rate in females (733 ± 235.3 vs. 685 ± 282.6 deg s−1, ANCOVA, P < 0.047). We suggest that the increase in eye-span does result in an increase in the mechanical requirements for aerial turning but that male C. dalmanni are capable of compensating for the constraint of longer eye-stalks during the range of turns observed through wingbeat kinematics and increased wing size.  相似文献
