Profiles with all orientations have been used to visualize the 3D structure of ivory from tusks of elephant, mammoth, walrus, hippopotamus, pig (bush, boar, and warthog), sperm whale, killer whale, and narwhal. Polished, forming, fractured, aged, and stained surfaces were prepared for microscopy using epi-illumination. Tusks have a minor peripheral component, the cementum, a soft derivative of the enamel layer, and a main core of dentine=ivory. The dentine is composed of a matrix of particles 5-20 microm in diameter in a ground substance containing dentinal tubules about 5 microm in diameter with a center to center spacing of 10-20 microm. Dentinal tubules may be straight (most) or curly (pigs). The main findings relate to the way that dentinal tubules align in sheets to form microlaminae in the length of the tusk. Microlaminae are sheets of laterally aligned dentinal tubules. They are axial but may be radial (most), angled to the forming face (pigs and hippopotamus canines), or radial but helical (narwhals). Within the microlaminae the dentinal tubules may be radial, angled to the axis (whales, walrus, and pigs), or may change their orientation from one microlamina to the next in helicoids (canines of hippopotamuses, incisors of proboscidea). In the nonbanded, featureless ivories from the hippopotamus incisors, the dentinal tubules form radial microlamina from which the arrangements in other ivories can be derived. In the canines of hippopotamuses and incisors of proboscidea, the dentinal tubule orientation changes incrementally from one microlamina to the next in a helicoid, a stack of dentinal tubules that change their orientation by 180 degrees anticlockwise. Dentinal tubules having different orientations are laid down concurrently, not layer by layer as in most examples of helicoidal architecture (e.g., insect cuticle). In proboscidean ivory, the microlaminae are radial, normal to the banding of growth layers marking the plane of deposition. They form radial segments with each 180 degrees turn in the orientation of their constituent dentinal tubules. Below the cementum they are almost complete 180 degrees helicoids, but nearer to the core they become narrower with the loss of radially oriented dentinal tubules. These truncated helicoidal patterns appear in longitudinal profile as VVVV feather patterns rather than intersection intersection intersection intersection, each V or intersection being the side view of a partial or complete helicoid. The Schreger pattern in proboscidean ivory consists of these helicoids divided tangentially into columns in the length of the tusk. Narwhals have the most abundant matrix particles with their radial/helical dentinal tubules having a twist opposite to that in the cementum.  相似文献

A general, logistic population model is used to explore the dynamics of harvested elephant populations. The model includes two features peculiar to elephant populations and the harvesting of ivory. First, because of the shape of the growth curve of tusks with age, the conversion factor that relates the number of elephants killed to the ivory yield in weight is not constant, but a function of the population size. Second, tusks from animals that die from natural causes can be retrieved and included in the total yield of ivory. The implications of the relationship between tusk size and age of an animal on the maximum sustainable yield in terms of ivory tonnage and in terms of the number of tusks are explored. The nonequilibrium implications of the tusk growth curve on the population dynamics under different harvesting strategies are also investigated. Results indicate that the maximum sustainable yield is achieved at very low harvest rates with population levels close to the pristine equilibrium. When tusks from animals that die of natural causes are included in the harvest, the maximum yield may, depending on the mortality and recruitment parameters, occur when there is no direct harvest.  相似文献

Harvesting of wild populations can cause the evolution of morphological, behavioral, and life history traits that may compromise natural or sexual selection. Despite the vulnerability of large mammals to rapid population decline from harvesting, the evolutionary effects of harvesting on mega‐fauna have received limited attention. In elephants, illegal ivory harvesting disproportionately affects older age classes and males because they carry large tusks, but its' effects on tusk size for age or tusk size for stature are less understood. We tested whether severe historical elephant harvests eliminated large tuskers among survivors and whether elephants born thereafter had smaller tusks. Adjusting for the influence of shoulder height – a metric strongly correlated with body size and age and often used as a proxy for age – we compared tusk size for elephants sampled in 1966–1968, prior to severe ivory harvesting in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with tusk size of survivors and elephants born during population recovery in the mid‐1990s. In a regional population, tusk length declined by ˜21% in male and by ˜27% in female elephants born during population recovery, while tusk length declined by 22% in males and 37% in females among survivors. Tusk circumference at lip declined by 5% in males but not in females born during population recovery, whereas tusk circumference reduced by 8% in male and by 11% in female survivors. In a single subpopulation, mean tusk length at mean basal tusk circumference declined by 12.4% in males and 21% in females. Tusk size varied between elephant social groups. Tusk homogeneity within social groups and the often high genetic similarity within social groups suggest that tusk size may be heritable. Our findings support a hypothesis of selection of large tuskers by poachers as a driver of the decline in tusk size for age proxy and contemporary tusk evolution in African elephants.  相似文献

To present an overview of the evolution of the tool-kit and the technical practices from the first occupations of the Arctic until historic periods, the Foxe Basin region, including the Hudson Strait in his southern part, as well as the western coast of Greenland, have been taken as a case study. While around the Foxe Basin the exploitation of walrus tusks widely prevailed during Pre-Dorset and Dorset times (Paleoeskimo), it becomes more and more marginal for the Thule period (Neoeskimo), being gradually replaced by that of whalebone. In contrast, the exploitation of walrus and narwhal tusks is frequent for the Thule times on the northwestern coast of Greenland. The large quantity and diversity of ivory artefacts permit to get an overview of all the activities practiced by the Arctic societies: hunting, transportation, domestic and symbolic activities.  相似文献

Abstract

Interactions between three genotypes (Ljsym 71-1, Ljsym 71-2 and Ljsym 72) of Lotus japoicus and one isolate from each of four species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Glomus sp. R-10, Glomus intraradices, Glomus etunicatum, and Gigaspora margarita) were investigated and compared with the wild-type ‘Gifu’ B-129. All the three genotypes showed no or defective internal colonization after inoculation with these AM fungi. In Ljsym72 mutant, the AM fungi produced deformed appressoria on the root surface, but failed to form any internal structures (internal hyphae, arbuscules and vesicles) except only in Glomus intraradices. The Ljsym71-1 and Ljsym71-2 mutants had more deformed appressoria and occasionally formed internal hyphae, arbuscules and vesicles, depending on AM fungi used. Wild-type ‘Gifu’ (nod+myc+) plants had typical colonization. The colonization of mutants by several fungi varied and provides a basis for studying recognition and compatibility between plants and mycorrhizal fungal species. These mutants also will be useful in studies of the genetics of the symbiosis between plant species and AM fungi.  相似文献

This paper describes pathological alterations in the permanent canines (tusks) of four male wild boars. The mandibular tusks of all individuals, and also some of the maxillary tusks, exhibited an extended enamel hypoplasia in their apical portion, denoting an impairment of secretory ameloblast function. Moreover, the pulp cavities of the mandibular tusks were exposed through cleft-like openings in the wear (whetting) surfaces of the teeth. Presence of a plug of reparative dentine within the pulp cavity was observed in a split mandibular tusk of one individual. In a second boar, the presence of a plug of reparative dentine within the pulp cavity of the mandibular tusks was indicated radiographically. These findings suggested a reparation process attempting to demarcate a vital, apical pulp portion from a necrotic, incisal portion. The enamel hypoplasias observed in the teeth are regarded to be sequelae of the pulp inflammation caused by bacterial invasion in the mandibular tusks. Most likely, bacterial invasion of the dental pulp occurred through the cleft-like openings in the tusks whetting surfaces, the openings resulting from insufficient formation of secondary dentine. It is, however, also conceivable that pulp inflammation and partial necrosis occurred as a consequence of bacterial invasion of patent dentinal tubules, and that the openings in the whetting surface developed secondarily as a consequence of the pulp changes. One mandibular tusk showed marked signs of resorption apically, suggesting a spread of the inflammation from the pulp into the periodontium.  相似文献

We investigated the colonization and diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi associated with 24 moss species belonging to 16 families in China. AM fungal structures, i.e. spores, vesicles, hyphal coils (including intracellular hyphae), or intercellular nonseptate hyphae, were found in 21 moss species. AM fungal structures (vesicles, hyphal coils, and intercellular nonseptate hyphae) were present in tissues of 14 moss species, and spores and nonseptate hyphae on the surface of gametophytes occurred in 15 species. AM fungal structures were present in 11 of the 12 saxicolous moss species and in six of the ten terricolous moss species, but absent in two epixylous moss species. AM fungal structures were only observed in moss stem and leaf tissues, but not in rhizoids. A total of 15 AM fungal taxa were isolated based on trap culture with clover, using 13 moss species as inocula. Of these AM fungi, 11 belonged to Glomus, two to Acaulospora, one to Gigaspora, and one to Paraglomus. Our results suggest that AM fungal structures commonly occur in most mosses and that diverse AM fungi, particularly Glomus species, are associated with mosses.  相似文献

Large skeleton specimens are often featured as iconic open displays in Natural History Museums, for example, the blue whale ‘Hope’ at the Natural History Museum, London. A study on Hope's bone surface was performed to assess the biodeterioration potential of fungi. Fungi were isolated, and a fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) clone library survey was performed on dust and bone material. Mineral particles derived from bone and dust were analysed using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, variable pressure scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high vacuum SEM. Results showed that bone material, although mainly mineral in nature, and therefore less susceptible than organic materials to biodeterioration phenomena in the indoor environments, offers niches for specialized fungi and is affected by unusual and yet not so well-documented mechanisms of alteration. Areas of bone surface were covered with a dense biofilm mostly composed of fungal hyphae, which produced tunnelling and extensive deposition of calcium and iron-containing secondary minerals. Airborne halophilic and xerophilic fungi including taxa grouping into Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, capable of displacing salts and overcome little water availability, were found to dominate the microbiome of the bone surface.  相似文献

Characteristics of social structure, mating strategies, and parental investment can be inferred for mammalian species based on degree of sexual dimorphism, especially when males are substantially larger than females. American mastodons (Mammut americanum) and extant African elephants (Loxodonta africana, Loxodonta cyclotis) both exhibit marked dimorphism in tusk size. To evaluate the hypothesis that this dimorphism might be indicative of similar, and possibly conserved, behavioral patterns in each lineage, we undertook a detailed evaluation of the pattern of tusk growth in these two genera. Separate discriminant function analyses (DFA) of 21 adult mastodon tusks of inferred sex and 48 adult elephant tusks of known sex show that patterns of ontogenetic change in tusk circumference, regardless of genus, effectively discriminate between sexes. Canonical variates analysis (CVA) of tusks from male and female mastodons and male and female elephants shows that male tusks in both genera are larger than female tusks across all measurements, especially for maximum tusk circumference and pulp cavity depth. CVA’s emphasis of inter-group differences in tusk morphology also shows that mastodon tusks are more robust than elephant tusks. Overall, this study illustrates that there is a characteristic male and a characteristic female tusk form shared by elephants and mastodons. This shows that elephants and mastodons display a shared syndrome of traits beyond sex-linked differences in tusk size, supporting the hypothesis that mastodons exhibited behaviors similar to those we observe today in African elephants.  相似文献

Roots of three mangroves, Acanthus ilicifolius, Ceriops tagal and Excoecaria agallocha, collected from forests of the Sundarbans of India were stained with trypan blue to observe arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization. Spores of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi isolated from rhizospheric soil, collected together with the root samples, also were stained for testing the suitability of the dye as a fluorochrome. Confocal laser scanning microscopy images were constructed. A. ilicifolius and E. agallocha exhibited “Arum” type colonization with highly branched arbuscules, whereas C. tagal showed “Paris” type association with clumped and collapsed arbuscules. We demonstrated that trypan blue is a suitable fluorochrome for staining arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal spores, fungal hyphae, arbuscules and vesicles, which presumably have a considerable amount of surface chitin. It appears that as the integration of chitin into the fungal cell wall changes, its accessibility to trypan blue dye also changes.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizae, ubiquitous mutualistic symbioses between plant roots and fungi in the order Glomales, are believed to be important controllers of plant responses to global change, in particular to elevated atmospheric CO2. In order to test if any effects on the symbiosis can persist after long-term treatment, we examined root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and other fungi of several plant species from two grassland communities after continuous exposure to elevated atmospheric CO2 for six growing seasons in the field. For plant species from both a sandstone and a serpentine annual grassland there was evidence for changes in fungal root colonization, with changes occurring as a function of plant host species. We documented decreases in percentage nonmycorrhizal fungal root colonization in elevated CO2 for several plant species. Total AM root colonization (%) only increased significantly for one out of the five plant species in each grassland. However, when dividing AM fungal hyphae into two groups of hyphae (fine endophyte and coarse endophyte), we could document significant responses of AM fungi that were hidden when only total percentage colonization was measured. We also documented changes in elevated CO2 in the percentage of root colonized by both AM hyphal types simultaneously. Our results demonstrate that changes in fungal root colonization can occur after long-term CO2 enrichment, and that the level of resolution of the study of AM fungal responses may have to be increased to uncover significant changes to the CO2 treatment. This study is also one of the first to document compositional changes in the AM fungi colonizing roots of plants grown in elevated CO2. Although it is difficult to relate the structural data directly to functional changes, possible implications of the observed changes for plant communities are discussed.  相似文献

Dark septate endophytic fungi (DSE) may have an important functional relationship with host plants, but these functions and the colonization process remain unknown. We made microscopic observations of the growth of an endophytic hyphomycete in Chinese cabbage roots to understand its colonization process. This hyphomycete was Heteroconium chaetospira, a suspected DSE. Three weeks post inoculation, some hyphae became irregularly lobed and formed microsclerotia within host epidermal cells of healthy plants. In stunted plants, hyphae formed closely packed masses of fungal cells within host epidermal cells, but conidiophores rarely broke through the cell walls to produce conidia. The aim of this work was to jointly study non-mycorrhizal (dark septate fungi) and mycorrhizal (arbuscular mycorrhizae) colonization along a large range of heavy metal pollution in soil in order to determine the effective contribution of each type of endophytes in relation to heavy metal uptake and tolerance. Hence, eight sites were chosen in the mining area of northern France with respect both to a large range of heavy metal contamination (Cd, Pb, Zn) and monospecific colonization by Arrhenatherum elatius. Root colonization with both arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) and dark septate fungi (DSF) as well as spore density in rhizospheric soil were estimated in relation to soil characteristics. Mycorrhizal infestation (hyphae, arbuscules and vesicles) was adversely affected by soil pollution almost to exclusion. The intensity of colonization with DSF was very low in presence of AM in non-contaminated soils but higher in polluted soils. The effect of the fungal colonization on the heavy metal tolerance of Arrhenatherum elatius is discussed.  相似文献

The general objective of this research was to examine fungal interactions with silicate minerals within the context of their roles in bioweathering. To achieve this, we used muscovite, a phyllosilicate mineral (KAl2[(OH)2|AlSi3O10]), in the form of a mineral sheet model system for ease of experimental manipulation and microscopic examination. It was found that test fungal species successfully colonized and degraded the surface of muscovite sheets in both laboratory and field experiments. After colonization by the common soil fungus Aspergillus niger, a network of hyphae covered the surface of the muscovite, and mineral dissolution or degradation was clearly evidenced by a network of fungal “footprints” that reflected coverage by the mycelium. For natural soil incubations, microorganisms associated with muscovite sheet material included biofilms of fungi and bacteria on the surface, while mineral encrustation or adhesion to microbial structures was also observed. Our results show that muscovite sheet is a good model mineral system for examination of microbial colonization and degradation, and this was demonstrated using laboratory and field systems, providing more evidence for the bioweathering significance of fungal activities in the context of silicate degradation and soil formation and development. The approach is also clearly applicable to other rock and mineral-based substrates and a variety of free-living and symbiotic microbial systems.  相似文献

Roots of 19 Apocynaceae species were studied anatomically with respect to their symbiosis with VAM-fungi. In plants collected from the field, VAM-fungi were established in the root cortex. Also, inoculations with different Glomus species on the cultured plants are very successful in the infection and colonization of the root cortex. After penetration of the rhizodermis, the special exodermal short cells become colonized by winding hyphae. Then, in the root cortex of many Apocynaceae species, the VAM-fungi produce intercellular running hyphae which leads to extensive colonization of the root. Arbuscules develop on intracellular running hyphae, whereas vesicles develop mainly on intercellular hyphae. Except for some special details, this is the most common type of colonization of VAM fungi in flowering plants. But in Amsonia tabernaemontana, Nerium oleander, and Thevetia peruviana, another type of colonization could be observed. In these species, the colonization of the hyphae within the root cortex is only possible by intracellular growth. Intercellular running hyphae in the root are lacking. Therefore, after penetration the colonization in the cortex is cluster-like and strictly limited. Only by additional penetrations from hyphae in the soil, will roots show heavy infestations. This type of growth of the VAM fungi in the root is well known from the Gentianaceae and was explained as a structural incompatibility. In Catharanthus roseus, Pachypodium lamerei, and Trachelospermum jasminoides, intermediate stages of both types of colonization could be described. The results are discussed in the search for possible stimulants for structural incompatibility.  相似文献

Summary We have investigated whether direct physical interactions occur between arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs), some of which are used as biocontrol agents. Attachment of rhizobia and pseudomonads to the spores and fungal mycelium ofGigaspora margarita has been assessed in vitro and visualized by a combination of electron and confocal microscopy. The results showed that both rhizobia and pseudomonads adhere to spores and hyphae of AM fungi germinated under sterile conditions, although the degree of attachment depended upon the strain.Pseudomonas fluorescens strain WCS 365 andRhizobium leguminosarum strains B556 and 3841 were the most effective colonizers. Extracellular material of bacterial origin containing cellulose produced around the attached bacteria may mediate fungal/bacterial interactions. These results suggest that antagonistic and synergistic interactions between AM fungi and rhizosphere bacteria may be mediated by soluble factors or physical contact. They also support the view that AM fungi are a vehicle for the colonization of plant roots by soil rhizobacteria.Abbreviations AM arbuscular mycorrhiza - PGPR plant growth promoting rhizobacteria - CBH cellobiohydrolase - DAPG 2,4-(diacetyl-phloroglucinol - TY triptone-yeast - LB Lauria-Bertani Dedicated to Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Counting growth-layer groups (GLGs) in teeth is one of the most precise and widely accepted methods for aging marine mammals. Male narwhals have a large erupted tusk that can be used for aging, but this tusk is often difficult or expensive to obtain from hunters and most females do not display the tusk; thus, alternative methods for narwhal aging are needed. In this study, we aged narwhals by counting annual GLGs in embedded tusks and by measuring the change in the ratio of D- and L-enantiomers of aspartic acid in the eye lens nucleus that occurs as the animal ages (the aspartic acid racemization [AAR] technique). Absolute age estimates were estimated for seven tusks aged ≤15 yr. Estimated age was a significant predictor of aspartic acid D/L ratios with a racemization rate (Kasp) of 9.72 × 10−4/year ± 2.28 × 10−4 and a (D/L)0 of 3.46 × 10−2 ± 1.78 × 10−3 (r2 = 0.74). Results from our study, which included more younger GLG-aged animals than previously evaluated, confirms AAR can be used to generate age estimates for narwhals.  相似文献

Fungal colonization of litter has been described mostly in terms of fructification succession in the decomposition process or the process of fungal ligninolysis. No studies have been conducted on litter colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and their relationship with the presence of saprotrophic fungi. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationships that exist in simultaneous leaf litter colonization by AMF and saprotrophic fungi and the relationships between rates of litter and associated root colonization by AMF at different soil depths. We selected Eugenia sp. and Syzygium sp. in a riparian tropical forest, with an abundant production of litter (O horizon), we evaluated litter and root colonization at different depths, its C:N ratios, and the edaphic physico-chemical parameters of the A horizon immediately below the litter layer. Litter colonization by saprotrophic fungi and AMF increased with depth, but the saprotrophic fungal colonization of some litter fragments decreased in the lowermost level of the litter while AMF litter colonization continued to increase. Plant roots were present only in the middle and bottom layers, but their mycorrhizal colonization did not correlate with litter colonization. The external hyphae length of AMF is abundant (ca. 20 m g(-1) sample) and, in common with sample humidity, remained constant with increasing depth. We conclude that in zones of riparian tropical forest with abundant sufficient litter accumulation and abundant AMF external hyphae, the increase in litter colonization by AMF with depth correlates to the colonization by saprotrophic fungi, but their presence in the deepest layers is independent of both litter colonization by saprotrophic fungi and root colonization by AMF.  相似文献

Colophospermum mopane trees in Zambia's North Luangwa National Park and an adjacent Game Management Area, were examined for evidence of physical damage caused by browsers, humans, weather, fire, etc. The same trees were assessed for visual signs of fungal colonization, with the aim of investigating any possible relationship between physical damage and attack by fungi. The results of this study suggest that the severity of physical damage had a relatively small influence on the activity of fungi colonizing and utilizing mopane heartwood. The majority of fungi isolated from infected trees were saprophytes, and the common occurrence of these agents in healthy trees suggests that heartwood degradation is not detrimental to the health of the tree. ‘Internal roots’ produced from the cambium inside the hollow trunk, which apparently utilize the detritus accumulated there, is probably an adaptation through which C. mopane can recycle minerals and nutrients.  相似文献
