The Holarctic carnea-group of Chrysoperla green lacewings consists of numerous cryptic, sibling species, distinguished principally by vibrational courtship songs. A European member of this species-group, C. mediterranea (Hölzel), was originally diagnosed by its dark green coloration, red band across the front of the head, narrow wings, minute basal dilation of the pretarsus and ecological association with pines. Here we describe its courtship and mating song, which uniquely distinguishes the species from all other members of the carnea-group in Europe. Males and females both produce a single type of song, characterized by a long train of short, closely spaced volleys and nearly constant carrier frequency. Measured song features are nearly invariant across a large geographical range that extends well outside that previously known for C. mediterranea. Principal components analysis confirms the uniqueness of the mediterranea song in comparison with five other sympatric song species of the carnea-group. Populations which show the mediterranea song phenotype do not necessarily retain all of the traditional morphological features of the species, particularly in eastern parts of the range. Specifically, the green coloration may be less intense, the wings broader and the pretarsal basal dilation larger, resulting in significant morphological overlap with other song species. Larval morphology and ecophysiology also fail to distinguish C. mediterranea from other song species. Based on unique song phenotype, however, we conclude that C. mediterranea is a valid biological species, which can also be recognized in museum collections when a suite of physical attributes is used.  相似文献

The green lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens), is an important natural enemy of various crop pests, especially aphids. In the Japanese fauna, there are two types of larval forms, A and B, characterized by different head capsule markings. The Type A form is distributed throughout Japan, but the Type B form has a more limited distribution. Adults use abdominal vibration as a communication signal (courtship song) during mating. We analyzed oscillograms of these songs among several Japanese populations of C. carnea. The courtship songs of types A and B are distinctly different from one another. We then performed crossing tests between the two types. Copulation between same-type pairings was much more likely than between different-type pairings. We also analyzed courtship songs of European C. carnea sensu stricti, introduced to Japan as a natural enemy of crop pests. The song of these introduced green lacewings appeared to differ from either type of Japanese C. carnea. The two types of C. carnea are likely to be different species, and also distinct from C. carnea sensu stricti of Europe.  相似文献

Abstract

Green lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) is a valuable bio-control agent that predates over various insect pests with high efficacy. It has developed considerable resistance to different classes of insecticides. This study was planned to investigate resistance level, stability and reversion rate against some new chemical insecticides using a field collected population of C. carnea. Field collected strain of C. carnea showed 313.44-fold, 216.50-fold and 276.83-fold resistance to imidacloprid, indoxacarb and chlorfenapyr compared to susceptible population, respectively. Baseline susceptibility values of C. carnea to imidacloprid, indoxacarb and chlorfenapyr were 2627.31, 502.10 and 581.89?ppm, while the insecticide resistance decrease rate was ?0.039, ?0.048 and ?0.040, respectively. Rotation of these insecticides requires quality measures maintaining survival of C. carnea in an intense environment where repeated applications are required to avoid economic damage by pests.  相似文献

Chrysoperla agilis Henry et al. is one of the five cryptic species of the carnea group found in Europe. Identification of these species is mainly based on the distinct mating signals produced by both females and males prior to copulation, although there are also morphological traits that can be used to distinguish among different cryptic species. Ecological and physiological cryptic species-specific differences may affect their potential as important biological agents in certain agroecosystems. To understand the effects of temperature on the life-history traits of C. agilis preimaginal development, adult longevity and reproduction were studied at seven temperatures. Temperature affected the development, survival and reproduction of C. agilis. Developmental time ranged from approximately 62 days at 15 °C to 15 days at 30 °C. Survival percentages ranged from 42% at 15 °C to 76% at 27 °C. One linear and five nonlinear models (Briere I, II, Logan 6, Lactin and Taylor) used to model preimaginal development were tested to describe the relationship between temperature and developmental rate. Logan 6 model fitted the data of egg to adult development best according to the criteria adopted for the model evaluation. The predicted lower developmental threshold temperatures were 11.4 °C and 11.8 °C (linear model), whereas the predicted upper threshold temperatures (Logan 6 model) were 36.6 and 36.9 °C for females and males, respectively. Adult life span, preoviposition period and lifetime cumulative oviposition were significantly affected by temperature. The effect of rearing temperature on the demographic parameters is well summarized with the estimated values of the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) which ranged from 0.0269 at 15 °C to 0.0890 at 32 °C and the highest value recorded at 27 °C (0.1530). These results could be useful in mass rearing C. agilis and predicting its population dynamics in the field.  相似文献

Should we have different expectations regarding the likelihood and pace of speciation by sexual selection when considering species with sexually monomorphic mating signals? Two conditions that can facilitate rapid species divergence are Felsenstein's one‐allele mechanism and a genetic architecture that includes a genetic association between signal and preference loci. In sexually monomorphic species, the former can manifest in the form of mate choice based on phenotype matching. The latter can be promoted by selection acting upon genetic loci for divergent signals and preferences expressed simultaneously in each individual, rather than acting separately on signal loci in males and preference loci in females. Both sexes in the Chrysoperla carnea group of green lacewings (Insecta, Neuroptera, Chrysopidae) produce sexually monomorphic species‐specific mating signals. We hybridized the two species C. agilis and C. carnea to test for evidence of these speciation‐facilitating conditions. Hybrid signals were more complex than the parents and we observed a dominant influence of C. carnea. We found a dominant influence of C. agilis on preferences in the form of hybrid discrimination against C. carnea. Preferences in hybrids followed patterns predicting preference loci that determine mate choice rather than a one‐allele mechanism. The genetic association between signal and preference we detected in the segregating hybrid crosses indicates that speciation in these species with sexually monomorphic mating signals can have occurred rapidly. However, we need additional evidence to determine whether such genetic associations form more readily in sexually monomorphic species compared to dimorphic species and consequently facilitate speciation.  相似文献

Interference and competition betweenChrysoperla carnea (Stephens) andCoccinella septempunctata L. was investigated in the absence and presence of aphid prey. When larvae of similar vigour encountered each other,C. carnea larvae were superior toC. septempunctata. Otherwise the larger of 2 individuals always killed the smaller. In the absence of preyC. carnea adults were attacked by their own 2nd and 3rd instar larvae as well as by 3rd instar larvae ofC. septempunctata. In all encounters the adults ofC. septempunctata were superior. Since the eggs ofC. carnea are protected to some extent by being on egg stalks, they were less susceptible to cannibalism and predation thanC. septempunctata eggs which are deposited in batches directly on plant leaves. In the presence of prey cannibalism and predation were reduced, especially between larvae. Only eggs and 1st instar larvae were endangered. The pattern of phenotypic and molecular variation within the polytypic olivaceous warbler H. pallida was examined. This species is distributed in the southern parts of the western Palaearctic, central Asia and in the arid parts of northern Africa, and also in parts of the sub-Saharan Sahel zone. Based on morphology, five subspecies, at times assigned to three groups, have been identified. By comparing morphological, behavioural, vocal and molecular variation, we investigated the phenotypic and phylogenetic relationships within the Hippolais pallida group. The morphological and genetic data of the present study support the view of splitting the olivaceous warbler into a western (former subspecies opaca) and an eastern form (former subspecies elaeica, pallida, reiseri and laeneni). Opaca is consistently and significantly larger than the other taxa in all size measurements, even if it does share morphological properties with elaeica in characters associated with migration. The song of the polytypic pallida differs clearly from that of opaca, and is remarkably consistent within its wide range which comprises four subspecies. The molecular analysis, and the resulting phylogenetic pattern, clearly separated opaca on a single branch distant from the other subspecies. The eastern form consists of two non-overlapping haplotype groups: elaeica with relatively diverse mtDNA variation, and the three African subspecies pallida, reiseri and laeneni, which all share the same or closely related mtDNA haplotypes. It remains open whether the African taxa should be regarded as three valid subspecies of the Eastern olivaceous warbler, or if they are better treated as a single African subspecies.  相似文献

Abstract Understanding predator–prey interactions has a pivotal role in biological control programs. This study evaluated the functional response of three larval instars of the green lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens), preying upon eggs and first instar larvae of the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera Hübner. The first and second instar larvae of C. carnea exhibited type II functional responses against both prey stages. However, the third instar larvae of C. carnea showed a type II functional response to the first instar larvae of H. armigera, but a type III functional response to the eggs. For the first instar larvae of C. carnea, the attack rate on H. armigera eggs was significantly higher than that on the larvae, whereas the attack rate of the second instar C. carnea on H. armigera larvae was significantly higher than that on the eggs. For the third instar larvae of C. carnea, the attack rate on the larvae was 1.015 ± 0.278/h, and the attack coefficient on the eggs was 0.036 ± 0.005. The handling times of the third instar larvae on larvae and eggs were 0.087 ± 0.009 and 0.071 ± 0.001 h, respectively. The highest predation rate was found for the third instar larvae of C. carnea on H. armigera eggs. Results of this study revealed that the larvae of C. carnea, especially the third instar, had a good predation potential in controlling H. armigera eggs and larvae. However, for a comprehensive estimation of the bio‐control abilities of C. carnea toward H. armigera, further field‐based studies are needed.  相似文献

Recent acoustic studies have revealed that Cicadetta montana (Scopoli, 1772), which was once thought to be a single widespread Palaearctic cicada species, is actually a complex of many taxa. Although some song patterns are very distinct, others comprise groups of closely related species, as in the case of Cicadetta cerdaniensis Puissant & Boulard, 2000, Cicadetta cantilatrix Sueur & Puissant, 2007, and Cicadetta anapaistica Hertach, 2011. Seven spatially or behaviourally isolated metapopulations belonging to this song group from Italy and Switzerland were detected and investigated using acoustic, molecular, and morphological methods. Taxonomic decisions in this group are challenging because of a lack of truly diagnostic morphological characters, variously coloured morphs, qualitatively intermediate song patterns in contact zones, and strong temperature dependence of song‐duration characters. Molecular genetic studies suggest rapid speciation resulting in incomplete lineage sorting and introgression. It is only by using multiple sources of data that species can be delimited. The new species C icadetta sibillae sp. nov. and the new subspecies C icadetta anapaistica lucana ssp. nov. were described using the microstructure of the male calling songs. C icadetta sibillae sp. nov. occurs from southern Switzerland to central Italy, and is the most abundant cicada in the Northern Apennine. C icadetta anapaistica lucana ssp. nov. is endemic to a small southern Italian distribution range, and seems to be threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation. There is strong evidence that current distribution patterns and phylogenetic relationships of the Cicadetta cerdaniensis group are linked to speciation events in Pleistocene glacial refugia in the Italian, Iberian, and Balkan peninsulas. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

To determine whether diverse populations and biotypes of Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) can be mass-produced and stored under uniform conditions, we assessed reproduction in five North American populations, four from the carnea biotype and one from the mohave biotype. Non-diapause adults from the carnea biotype varied significantly in only one aspect of reproduction, viz., the preoviposition period, whereas the duration and rate of oviposition, as well as fecundity, did not vary significantly. Relative to the carnea populations, the mohave population typically had delayed oviposition and a lower rate of oviposition; however, its oviposition period was long, and thus its fecundity differed only from that of the most productive carnea populations.The shelf-life (= survival during storage, and subsequent survival and reproduction after storage) was evaluated for four populations of the carnea biotype. Survival of diapausing adults during the first 18 weeks of storage was high among all four populations; adults from three populations also showed high survival after 35 weeks of storage. A high incidence of females from all four populations laid some fertile eggs after being stored for up to 31 weeks or longer. After six or more weeks of storage, average fecundity was high and ranged from 400–900 eggs/female. Duration of storage (up to 39 weeks) was a significant determinant of fecundity in two of the four populations.In practice, diverse populations of C. carnea can be efficiently mass-produced (with or without storage) under uniform conditions in the insectary. Thus, the choice of which populations to mass-produce and use in augmentation can be based primarily on the characteristics (e.g., climate, habitat, crop) of the intended area of release, rather than on considerations concerning mass-rearing.  相似文献

The successful use of predators in classical biocontrol programmes needs several background laboratory investigations, one of which is the evaluation of predator behavioural responses to changes in the density of their prey. The impact effect of the density of two prey species [Myzus persicae Sulzer and Aphis craccivora Koch (Hemiptera: Aphididae)] on the predation rates of third-instar Chrysoperla carnea Stephens (Chrysopidae: Neuroptera) and fourth-instar Coccinella septempunctata L. and Hippodamia variegata Goeze (Coccinellidae: Coleoptera) larvae was studied. Although prey species, predator species, prey density, and their interactions all had significant effects on the numbers of aphids consumed, the type of functional response did not vary, remaining a type II response in all treatments. However, the type II parameters differed among predator species on the same prey species, and for each predator species on the two prey species. Chrysoperla. carnea on M. persicae and H. variegata on A. craccivora were more voracious than other predators. In the context of functional response and biological control, the release of these predators, that show inverse density-dependent mortality, has to be started in early season to build up their population on low aphid densities and attack later high aphid populations.  相似文献

Speciation often involves incremental responses to natural selection and results in large scale genomic changes, but it may also occur abruptly and with little genetic imprint, as seen in some complexes of cryptic species. Recent attention has focused on sexual selection in rapid speciation, because it can disrupt premating signals that mediate reproductive isolation. Some models require that environmental adaptation assist sexual selection during speciation, while others show that populations can diverge through mate choice alone. We propose that speciation involving environmental adaptation in premating signals is likely to have a polygenic basis, while speciation due to arbitrary changes in premating signals could be accompanied by changes at just a few loci. The sibling species Chrysoperla plorabunda and Chrysoperla johnsoni belong to a large complex of cryptic species of green lacewings, and meet all criteria for speciation via sexual selection. We perform a genetic analysis of line crosses between them, focusing on their substrate-borne premating songs. Measurements of seven song features and their principal components are compared among parentals, F1 and F2 hybrids, and backcrosses. The distributions of phenotypes are consistent with a model of more than one, but not many, genes. Sex linkage and/or maternal effects are negligible. C. plorabunda is dominant for most traits affecting mate choice. Bayesian analyses of segregation variance show significant additive and epistatic effects on line means. A Bayesian Castle–Wright estimate suggests that relatively few effective factors are responsible for variation in volley period ( ), number of volleys per song ( ), and PC-1 ( ). Our results are consistent with simple genetic architecture of songs, supporting a role for major genes in premating isolation and strengthening the notion that mate choice alone, without significant environmental adaptation, has been responsible for generating new lacewing species.  相似文献

Larvae of the common green lacewing Chrysoperla carnea are predacious and feed on a wide range of small, soft‐bodied arthropods. In addition to their feeding on prey arthropods to cover their nutritional requirements for growth and development, the consumption of non‐prey foods such as honeydew has been reported. It is commonly believed that these food supplements are primarily exploited by the larvae when prey is scarce or of low nutritional quality. Here, we assess whether C. carnea larvae also use honeydew when high‐quality aphid prey are readily available. In a choice experiment, the feeding behaviour of C. carnea larvae was observed in the presence of both aphids and honeydew. The larvae were starved, aphid‐fed, or honeydew‐fed prior to the experiment. The time spent feeding on honeydew compared with feeding on aphids was highest for starved larvae and lowest for honeydew‐fed larvae. Among the three treatments, the aphid‐fed larvae spent the most time resting and the least time searching. In an additional experiment food intake was assessed in terms of weight change when larvae were provided with an ad libitum supply of either aphids or honeydew. Larvae yielded a significant lower relative weight increase on honeydew compared with aphids. The reduced weight increase on honeydew was compensated when larvae were subsequently provided with aphids, but not when honeydew was provided again. This study showed that (i) prior honeydew feeding reduces overall aphid consumption, and (ii) larvae do consume honeydew even after they have been given ad libitum access to aphids. The fact that larvae of C. carnea still use honeydew as a food source in the presence of suitable prey underlines the importance of carbohydrates as foods.  相似文献

Predation by third instar larvae of Chrysoperla (=Chrysopa) carnea (Stephens) (Chrysopidae) did not alter the ratio of unparasitized Heliothis virescens (F.) (Noctuidae) larvae to H. virescens larvae parasitized by Microplitis croceipes (Cresson) (Braconidae) when these second instar larvae were exposed together to the predator on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L., Malvaceae) in field cages. This indicates that C. carnea larvae did not prefer either parasitized or unparasitized larvae.

Résumé Les prédations de chenilles d'Heliothis virescens, parasitées ou saines, élevées sur coton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), de la variété Stoneville 213, ont été comparées, dans des cages de 10 m2 chacune placées dans la nature. Des chenilles du second stade ont été placées sur des pieds de coton dans 10 cages, à raison de 160 chenilles préalablement exposées à M. croceipes pendant leur premier stade et 40 chenilles saines par cage. Des larves du troisième stade de Chrysopa carnea ont été ajoutées dans 6 cages, à raison de 500/cage, et 4 cages ont servi de témoins pour évaluer les autres causes de mortalité. L'expérience a été répétée 2 fois. Les chenilles d'H. virescens ont été retirées au bout d'un jour dans une expérience et au bout de 2 jours dans l'autre. C. carnea n'a fait aucun choix entre chenilles parasitées ou non; la fréquence moyenne de chenilles parasitées n'a pas présenté de différence significative entre les cages avec ou sans C. carnea. Qui qu'il en soit, C. carnea a réduit significativement la survie des chenilles d'H. virescens parasitées ou non.

The distribution of potato cyst-nematodes, Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida was surveyed in two widely separated fenland potato farms in Eastern England. Evidence was obtained of the suppression of G. rostochiensis and increase of G. pallida populations when Maris Piper and other potatoes with the same gene (H1) for resistance to G. rostochiensis are grown. Numbers of G. rostochiensis and/or G. pallida in the soil could not be related directly to recent potato cropping histories of the fields. Identification of the two species of Globodera by the presence and colour of females on the roots of Désirée, Maris Piper, Cromwell (A27/20) and A25/11 potatoes were confirmed by agarose gel isoelectric focussing of general proteins. Cromwell exhibited little or no resistance to G. pallida at Woodwalton. A25/11 was more resistant to this species at Woodwalton but was susceptible to G. rostochiensis. The results of these surveys emphasise the need for carefully planned and integrated control programmes based on the use of resistant cultivars of potato, crop rotations and appropriate nematicide use to combat the growing problem of G. pallida, especially in organic soils.  相似文献

The spinosad bait spray GF-120 Naturalyte F® (Dow AgroSciences LLC, Indianapolis, IN, USA) is widely used in commercial olives in California. Because of concern about its non-target effects on beneficial insects, we studied its impact on feeding behavior, mortality, and reproductive parameters of adult green lacewings, Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens), under laboratory conditions. Male and female feeding rate and quantity, and subsequent mortality, were compared over a 5-day period following a 24-h exposure to honey, GF-120, or the bait component (without spinosad) in two-choice and no-choice assays. All treatments were ingested equally when offered alone. Spinosad did not impart repellency or preference to GF-120 relative to the bait. Honey was preferred in choice tests with GF-120 or bait. Significant mortality occurred when GF-120 was offered alone, but was not significant when it was offered in choice with honey or bait. In a separate assay of female longevity and reproduction, mortality rate as a function of time was similar in all treatments, except for some significantly earlier mortality due to GF-120 compared with honey. GF-120 ingestion significantly reduced fecundity compared with bait during the first week after treatment. Egg hatch was not significantly affected. The preference of adult C. carnea for food should ameliorate the potential negative effect of GF-120 on adult C. carnea mortality in the field. The laboratory study finds that GF-120 is a potentially safer choice for C. carnea than an aqueous suspension of spinosad, and provides no new evidence for definitive risk to field populations.  相似文献

A major concern regarding the deployment of insect resistant transgenic plants is their potential impact on non-target organisms, in particular on beneficial arthropods such as predators. To assess the risks that transgenic plants pose to predators, various experimental testing systems can be used. When using tritrophic studies, it is important to verify the actual exposure of the predator, i.e., the presence of biologically active toxin in the herbivorous arthropod (prey). We therefore investigated the uptake of Cry1Ab toxin by larvae of the green lacewing (Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens); Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) after consuming two Bt maize-fed herbivores (Tetranychus urticae Koch; Acarina: Tetranychidae and Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval); Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) by means of an immunological test (ELISA) and the activity of the Cry1Ab toxin following ingestion by the herbivores. Moreover, we compared the activity of Cry1Ab toxin produced by Bt maize to that of purified toxin obtained from transformed Escherichia coli, which is recommended to be used in toxicity studies. The activity of the toxin was assessed by performing feeding bioassays with larvae of the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner); Lepidoptera: Crambidae), the target pest of Cry1Ab expressing maize. ELISA confirmed the ingestion of Bt toxin by C. carnea larvae when fed with either of the two prey species and feeding bioassays using the target pest showed that the biological activity of the Cry1Ab toxin is maintained after ingestion by both herbivore species. These findings are discussed in the context of previous risk assessment studies with C. carnea. The purified Cry1Ab protein was more toxic to O. nubilalis compared to the plant-derived Cry1Ab toxin when applied at equal concentrations according to ELISA measurements. Possible reasons for these findings are discussed.  相似文献
