As compared to other odontocetes (toothed whales), the rostrum of beaked whales (family Ziphiidae) often displays extensive changes in the shape, thickness, and density of its constituent bones. Previous morphological observations suggested that these modifications appeared in parallel in different ziphiid lineages. However, very few data were available on the compactness and histology of these rostral bones, which precluded the study of the processes at work for the development of such structures, as well as the interpretation of their functional implications. In this work we review the bibliographic data on the anatomy of the ziphiid rostrum and we add new observations on adults of several extinct and extant taxa. These observations are based on CT scans and transverse histological sections. Our results confirm that different bones (vomer, mesethmoid, premaxilla, maxilla) are involved in the various morphologies displayed by ziphiid rostra. Strong density contrasts are detected between bones and/or inside the bones themselves; for example, parts of the rostrum reach densities in the range of Neoceti ear bones, which are among the densest bones known hitherto. Furthermore, the histology of the pachyostotic and osteosclerotic bones proves to change from one taxon to the other; the degree of Haversian remodeling varies strongly between species: it can be absent (e.g. Aporotus recurvirostris), partial (e.g. aff. Ziphirostrum), or complete (e.g., Mesoplodon densirostris). The atypical secondary osteons known to be responsible for bone hypermineralization in the rostrum of M. densirostris occurred also in Choneziphius sp. Confronted with a phylogenetic framework, these anatomical and histological observations indicate that the acquisition of compact (osteosclerotic) and/or swollen (pachyostotic) bone is the result of a broad convergence between taxa, in response to common selective pressures. The functional dimension of this question is discussed with respect to what is known about extant ziphiid ecology.  相似文献

The rostrum of most ziphiids (beaked whales) displays bizarre swollen regions, accompanied with extreme hypermineralisation and an alteration of the collagenous mesh of the bone. The functional significance of this specialization remains obscure. With the voluminous and dense hemispheric excrescence protruding from the premaxillae, the recently described fossil ziphiid Globicetus hiberus is the most spectacular case. This study describes the histological structure and interprets the growth pattern of this unique feature. Histologically, the prominence in Globicetus is made up of an atypical fibro‐lamellar complex displaying an irregular laminar organization and extreme compactness (osteosclerosis). Its development is suggested to have resulted from a protraction of periosteal accretion over the premaxillae, long after the end of somatic growth. Complex shifts in the geometry of this tissue are likely to have occurred during its accretion and no indication of Haversian remodeling could be found. X‐ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy indicate that the bone matrix in the premaxillary prominence of Globicetus closely resembles that of the rostrum of the extant beaked whale Mesoplodon densirostris: apatite crystals are of common size and strongly oriented, but the collagenous meshwork within bone matrix seems to be extremely sparse. The rostrum is a large diameter, thin-walled tubular structure that receives loads from the teeth. The rostrum can be conceptualized both as a rigid structure and as an assemblage of several bones that interface at sutures. Using miniature pigs, we measured in vivo strains in rostral bones and sutures to gain a better understanding of how the rostrum behaves biomechanically. Strains in the premaxillary and nasal bones were low but the adjacent maxillary-premaxillary, internasal, and intermaxillary suture strains were larger by an order of magnitude. While this finding emphasizes the composite nature of the rostrum, we also found evidence in the maxillary and nasal bones for rigid structural behavior. Namely, maxillary strain is consistent with a short beam model under shear deformation from molar loading. Strain in the nasal bones is only partially supported by a long beam model; rather, a complex pattern of dorsal bending of the rostrum from incisor contact and lateral compression is suggested. Torsion of the maxilla is ruled out due to the bilateral occlusion of pigs and the similar working and balancing side strains, although it may be important in mammals with a unilateral bite. Torsional loading does appear important in the premaxillae, which demonstrate working and balancing side changes in strain orientation. These differences are attributed to asymmetrical incisor contact occurring at the end of the power stroke.  相似文献

The lambeosaurine Tsintaosaurus spinorhinus has traditionally been reconstructed with an elevated, hollow, spike-like crest composed entirely of the nasal bones, although this has been disputed. Here, we provide a new reconstruction of the skull of this species based on reexamination and reinterpretation of the morphology and articular relationships of the type and Paratype skulls and a fragmentary crest. We confirm the presence of a supracranial crest composed of the elevated nasal bones, but also including the premaxillae. We hypothesize that the crest is a tall, lobate, hollow structure that projects dorsally and slightly caudally a distance greater than the height of the skull along the quadrate. In our reconstruction, the nasal passage passes through the crest, but enters the skull rostral to the tubular process of the nasals, not through it. Tsintaosaurus spinorhinus is rediagnosed on the basis of a suite of cranial autapomorphies including a circumnarial fossa subdivided into three accessory fossae, prefrontal with ascending rostral process and lateral flange, nasals fused sagittally to form elongate tubular process that rises dorsally from skull roof, each nasal being expanded rostrocaudally into a rhomboid distal process, and medial processes of premaxillae at the summit of the cranial crest inserted between rhomboid processes of nasals. Tsintaosaurus spinorhinus lacks characters that are present in more derived lambeosaurines (parasaurolophins and lambeosaurins), such as rotation of the caudal margin of the crest to an acute angle with the skull roof, lateral processes of the nasals that enclose part of the intracranial cavity and participate in the formation of the walls of the common median chamber, and a smooth narial fossa lacking ridges and accessory fossae. We hypothesize that ancestrally the rostrum of lambeosaurines may have been more similar to that in Saurolophinae, and became subsequently reduced in complexity during evolution of the group.  相似文献

Mammalodon colliveri is an unusual toothed archaic mysticete (Cetacea) from the Upper Oligocene Jan Juc Formation of south‐east Australia. The morphology of the holotype skull and postcrania are described in detail. Superimposed on the generally plesiomorphic archaeocete‐like morphology of Mammalodon are subtle mysticete synapomorphies. Derived features of Mammalodon include a short and bluntly rounded rostrum, reduced premaxillae, and anterodorsally directed orbits. Within Mysticeti, this suite of features is unique. The aberrant rostral morphology of Mammalodon suggests specialization for suction feeding. Janjucetus hunderi is placed in an expanded family Mammalodontidae. Phylogenetic analysis corroborates the monophyly of Basilosauridae, Neoceti, Odontoceti, and Mysticeti, and yields a novel hypothesis of toothed mysticete relationships: a basal clade of undescribed toothed mysticetes from South Carolina, a Llanocetidae + Mammalodontidae clade, and monophyletic Aetiocetidae are posited as successive sister taxa to edentulous baleen whales (Chaeomysticeti). Toothed archaic mysticetes clearly employed diverse prey capture strategies, with exaptations for filter feeding evolving sequentially in stem group Mysticeti. Miocene baleen whales were highly diverse and included tens of genera. However, their taxonomy and phylogeny, as well as relationships with living whales, are still a subject of controversy. Here, “Mesocetus” argillarius, a poorly known specimen from Denmark, is redescribed with a focus on the cranial anatomy. It was found to represent not only a new genus, Tranatocetus gen. nov., but also a new family; Tranatocetidae. The whales of this family have the rostral bones either overriding or dividing the frontals; the rostral bones are contacting the parietals and nasals dividing the maxillae on the vertex; the occipital shield is dorsoventrally bent. The tympanic bulla is particularly characteristic of this family featuring a short, narrow anterior portion with a rounded or squared anterior end and a wider and higher posterior portion that is swollen in the posteroventral area. A phylogenetic analysis including 51 taxa supports a monophyletic group comprising most Neogene and modern whales, with Tranatocetidae being possibly closer related to Balaenopteridae (rorquals) than to Cetotheriidae. Tranatocetidae exhibit a charahteristic bulla shape. In fact, all Neogene and modern mysticete families examined have a unique shape of the tympanic bulla that is diagnostic at family-level. Inclusion of problematic taxa like Tranatocetus argillarius in phylogenies brings new understanding of the distribution and diagnostic value of character traits. This underlines the need for re-examination of earlier described specimens in the light of the wealth of new information published in later years.  相似文献

Mosasaurus beaugei Arambourg, 1952 was based on isolated teeth from the Maastrichtian phosphatic deposits of Morocco. The recent discovery of new material, including skull and mandibular remains, improves our knowledge of this species. M. beaugei shares the following synapomorphies with the genus Mosasaurus: large teeth bearing two prominent carinae and with asymmetrical labial and lingual surfaces, the labial one being flattened and strongly facetted and the lingual one being convex; premaxillae with a small pointed rostrum and dentary without rostrum; palatal elements closely united; coronoid with very large ventromedial process overlying the prearticular. M. beaugei is characterised by the following autapomorphies: 12-13 maxillary teeth; marginal teeth bearing 3-5 prisms on the labial surface and 8-9 on the lingual one; palatine with posterior border concave and perpendicular to the long axis of the skull; splenial visible laterally on half of the dentary ventral surface; coronoid with anterior wing well developed and bearing two notches. M. beaugei is only known to date in the Maastrichtian phosphates of Morocco.  相似文献

The Canjilon quarry, located in north-central New Mexico near Ghost Ranch, contains a death assemblage of phytosaurs located stratigraphically high within the Petrified Forest Formation of the Chinle Group (Revueltian = early-mid Norian). The site has yielded numerous fossils ofPseudopalatus-grade phytosaurs, including at least 10 skulls collected from the locality byCharles Camp in 1928 and 1933 and another collected more recently byAlex Downs, curator of paleontology at Ghost Ranch. A re-examination of these skulls reveals two morphotypes that differ only in the relative lengths and relative robustness of their premaxillae. In these two morphotypes, the premaxillae define the shape and length of the rostral crest, the dimensions of which are independent of skull size. In one morphotype, the premaxillae are long, thin bones that lead to an abrupt, volcano-like narial crest. In the second morphotype, the premaxillae are of approximately the same length, but expand dorsoventrally halfway along their lengths, creating a longer and more robust crest. The most probable explanation of these two variants in rostral crest morphology in a Single, catastrophic death assemblage is thatPseudopalatus-grade phytosaurs are sexually dimorphic. Thus, the larger, more robust crest of the first morphotype is probably a display feature, most likely of the male animal. The more gracile snout änderest characterize the female morph. In the sample of phytosaurs examined, there are three individuals of the more robust (male) morphotype, five individuals of the gracile (female) morphotype, and three individuals (2 adult, 1 juvenile) that cannot be assigned to either morphotype because the skulls are too damaged to make an aecurate assessment. This is the first clear evidence of sexual dimorphism in phytosaurs, and has important implications for phytosaur species-level taxonomy, as well as for understanding aspects of their paleobiology (e.g., population dynamics).  相似文献

Four species of beaked whales of the genus Mesoplodon regularly occur in the North Atlantic. These are Sowerby's Beaked Whale Mesoplodon bidens, Blainville's Beaked Whale Mesoplodon densirostris, Gervais Beaked Whale Mesoplodon europaeus and True's Beaked Whale Mesoplodon mirus. These four species differ in their distribution within this area. M. bidens is the most northerly recorded species followed by M. mirus. M. densirostris and M. europaeus both generally occur further south and their distributions cross the equator. The distribution of Mesoplodon species may relate to variations in water temperature.  相似文献

Fossil baleen is rare in the sedimentary record. This paper documents the exceptional occurrence of thirty seven fossil whale specimens with preserved baleen in the Neogene Pisco Formation during a transect survey in a limited area west of the Ica River Valley near the town of Ocucaje in southern Peru. The sedimentary layers consist of tuffaceous and diatomaceous sandstones, diatomaceous mudstones, and dolomites, deposited in a shallow marine embayment. Observations of modern whale carcasses on the seafloor and stranded individuals indicate that baleen detaches from the mouth of the whales very rapidly after death, and that bones deteriorate very rapidly as a result of scavenging activity and abrasion. In contrast, the bones of the Pisco Formation whales are exceptionally well preserved, and their baleen is often found in life position suspended from the rostrum. Sedimentary structures found associated with some skeletons indicate tidal and storm processes, suggesting that the environment was not anoxic. This exceptional occurrence of fossil baleen suggests early mineralization of the baleen attachment to the rostrum or rapid burial of the skeletons before any detachment or loss could occur.  相似文献

Two new species of Hisonotus are described from the rio Paraná-Paraguay basin in Brazil. The most remarkable features of the new species are the odontodes forming longitudinally aligned rows (one odontode after the other, but not necessarily forming parallel series) on the head and trunk (vs. odontodes not forming longitudinally aligned rows), a pair of rostral plates at the tip of the snout (vs. a single rostral plate), the functional v-shaped spinelet (vs. spinelet non-functional, square-shaped, or absent). These features suggest close phylogenetic relationships with Hisonotus bockmanni, H. insperatus, H. luteofrenatus and H. piracanjuba. Additionally, both new species are distinguished from their congeners by characters related to head length and depth, orbital diameter, suborbital depth, caudal peduncle depth, pectoral-fin spine length, snout length and counts of teeth. Hisonotus paresi sp. n. further differs from its congeners by having contrasting dark geometric spots on the anterodorsal region of the body, a character lacking in H. oliveirai sp. n. The variation in number and shape of the rostral plate, posterior rostrum plates, infraorbitals and the preopercle in both new species and in H. insperatus are discussed.  相似文献

Two new species of oribatid mites of the superfamily Oripodoidea (Acari, Oribatida) are described from Trinidad and Tobago. Scheloribates (Scheloribates) tobagoensis sp. n. (Scheloribatidae) differs fromS. (Scheloribates) papillaris Tseng, 1984 in the structure of the rostral and lamellar setae and leg solenidia, in the length of the prolamellae, the absence of aggenital setae, and in reduction of setae on tarsi III. Areozetes ryabinini sp. n. (Haplozetidae) differs from A. altimontanus Hammer, 1961 in the structure of the bothridial and notogastral setae and rostrum and in the number of claws on the tarsi.  相似文献

Potential roles of the rostrum of sawsharks (Pristiophoridae), including predation and self‐defence, were assessed through a variety of inferential methods. Comparison of microwear on the surface of the rostral teeth of sawsharks and sawfishes (Pristidae) show that microwear patterns are alike and suggest that the elongate rostra in these two elasmobranch families are used for a similar purpose (predation). Raman spectroscopy indicates that the rostral teeth of both sawsharks and sawfishes are composed of hydroxyapatite, but differ in their collagen content. Sawfishes possess collagen throughout their rostral teeth whereas collagen is present only in the centre of the rostral teeth of sawsharks, which may relate to differences in ecological use. The ratio of rostrum length to total length in the common sawshark Pristiophorus cirratus was found to be similar to the largetooth sawfish Pristis pristis but not the knifetooth sawfish Anoxypristis cuspidata. Analysis of the stomach contents of P. cirratus indicates that the diet consists of demersal fishes and crustaceans, with shrimp from the family Pandalidae being the most important dietary component. No prey item showed evidence of wounds inflicted by the rostral teeth. In light of the similarities in microwear patterns, rostral tooth chemistry and diet with sawfishes, it is hypothesised that sawsharks use their rostrum in a similar manner for predation (sensing and capturing prey) and possibly for self‐defence.  相似文献

Skull and mandibular elements of a tomistomine crocodilian are described from the late Eocene to early Oligocene lignite seams of Krabi, peninsular Thailand. The Thai tomistomine is a longirostrine form characterized by a rostrum/skull ratio of about 0.6; a mandibular symphysis reaching the level of the eleventh alveolus; a deep participation of the splenial in the symphysis to the level of the ninth alveolus; an enlarged fifth maxillary alveolus; long nasals reaching the premaxillae at the level of the fifth maxillary alveolus but not contributing to the external nares; undivided posterior processes of premaxillae; a short prefrontal, excluded by a longer lacrimal from the posteromedial margin of maxillae; vomers visible on the palate. A phylogenetic analysis recovers the Thai specimen among derived tomistomines, on the stem lineage of the extant Tomistoma schlegelii, as a close ally of Maomingosuchus petrolica, a late Eocene tomistomine from southern China. The present recognition of Maomingosuchus sp. in late Eocene Thai deposits expands the distribution of Eocene tomistomines from southern China to the tropics. The origin of Tomistominae in Asia is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Cetaceans have highly transformed pelvic and hindlimb bones as a secondary adaptation to an aquatic lifestyle. Paleontological records of these bones are very scarce, which hampers interpretations of their homology and evolution. Newly found innominates, femora and tibia of Miocene baleen whales of family Cetotheriidae have primitive structure, which makes it possible to compare them with archaeocetes. As a result, a traditional view of a cetacean innominate as containing vestiges of all three pelvic bones and acetabulum is corroborated by new data and interpretations. A part of ischium (possibly, the superior ramus) is reduced in modern whales, but its vestige can sometimes be observed. A developmental mechanism underlying this pattern can hypothetically involve alterations in Pbx1 and Pbx2, Prrx1 and Prrx2, Pit1 or BMP7 expression: the observed anatomy is similar to reported cases of BMP7 mutations, which are combined with previously reported alterations in Shh regulation. Thus, pelvic and hindlimb reduction in modern cetaceans can in some aspects be compared to ‘Mermaid Syndrome’.  相似文献

Billfish rostra potentially have several functions; however, their role in feeding is unequivocal in some species. Recent work linked morphological variation in rostral micro-teeth to differences in feeding behavior in two billfish species, the striped marlin (Kajikia audax) and the sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus). Here, we present the rostral micro-tooth morphology for a third billfish species, the blue marlin (Makaira nigricans), for which the use of the rostrum in feeding behavior is still undocumented from systematic observations in the wild. We measured the micro-teeth on rostrum tips of blue marlin, striped marlin, and sailfish using a micro–computed tomography approach and compared the tooth morphology among the three species. This was done after an analysis of video-recorded hunting behavior of striped marlin and sailfish revealed that both species strike prey predominantly with the first third of the rostrum, which provided the justification to focus our analysis on the rostrum tips. In blue marlin, intact micro-teeth were longer compared to striped marlin but not to sailfish. Blue marlin had a higher fraction of broken teeth than both striped marlin and sailfish, and broken teeth were distributed more evenly on the rostrum. Micro-tooth regrowth was equally low in both marlin species but higher in sailfish. Based on the differences and similarities in the micro-tooth morphology between the billfish species, we discuss potential feeding-related rostrum use in blue marlin. We put forward the hypothesis that blue marlin might use their rostra in high-speed dashes as observed in striped marlin, rather than in the high-precision rostral strikes described for sailfish, possibly focusing on larger prey organisms.  相似文献

Schizodelphis sulcatus is the type species of the Eurhinodelphinid genus Schizodelphis and was until now only known from a rather fragmentary specimen, lacking some important parts of the skull (vertex, ear bones and apex of rostrum). The study of a well-preserved skull of S. sulcatus Gervais, discovered in the lower Miocene of Hérault (France), helps to improve the diagnosis of this enigmatic species. Diagnostic features include the low height at the base of the rostrum, the lower position of the paroccipital process compared to the height of the postglenoid process in lateral view, the ventrally deflected postglenoid process and the ovoid-shaped nasals. It also confirms that the type species of Schizodelphis is indeed distinct. For the first time in Schizodelphis, the vertex is preserved and the ear bones are found in anatomic connection with the basicranium. A cladistic analysis of cranial characters of Eurhinodelphinidae, including ear bones, is performed and reveals a close phylogenetic relationship between S. sulcatus and the North American species Schizodelphis barnesi. This analysis also highlights some apomorphies of the genus as the smoothly laterally deflected anterior spine of the bulla in ventral view and the reestablishment of the contact between the falciform process of the squamosal and the lateral lamina of the pterygoid. Conversely, the attribution of Schizodelphis morckhoviensis to the genus Schizodelphis is questioned by this analysis.  相似文献

Mouthparts are closely associated with the feeding behavior and feeding habits of insects. The features of mouthparts frequently provide important traits for evolutionary biologists and systematists. The short-faced scorpionflies (Panorpodidae) are distinctly different from other families of Mecoptera by their extremely short rostrum. However, their feeding habits are largely unknown so far. In this study, the mouthpart morphology of Panorpodes kuandianensis Zhong et al., 2011 was investigated using scanning electron microscopy and histological techniques. The mandibulate mouthparts are situated at the tip of the short rostrum. The clypeus and labrum are short and lack distinct demarcation between them. The epipharynx is furnished with sublateral and median sensilla patches. The blade-shaped mandibles are sclerotized and symmetrical, bearing apical teeth and serrate inner margins. The maxilla and labium retain the structures of the typical pattern of biting insects. The hirsute galea, triangular pyramid-shaped lacinia, and labial palps are described in detail at ultrastructural level for the first time. Abundant sensilla are distributed on the surface of maxillary and labial palps. The sexual dimorphism of mouthparts is found in Panorpodes for the first time, mainly exhibiting on the emargination of the labrum and apical teeth of mandibles. Based on the features of mouthparts, the potential feeding strategy and feeding mechanism are briefly discussed in Panorpodes.  相似文献

A novel hypothesis uniting Acipenser stellatus and Pseudoscaphirhynchus as sister groups has recently been proposed based on analysis of DNA sequences. In this paper I compare specimens of A. stellatus and P. kaufmanni, and show that they share several putatively derived similarities in the structure of their skulls, including: the presence of large spines on the dermal bones of skull; lateral extrascapular bones that enclose the confluence of the posttemporal, supratemporal, and otic sensory canals; elongate dorsal rostral bones; border rostral bones distinct in shape from dorsal rostral bones; greatly enlarged jugal that lacks a median flange; rostral canal bones that loop posteriorly at the anterior commissure of the rostral sensory canals; and the presence of an elongate, flat, and broad posterior ventral rostral bone. These similarities support a close relationship between A. stellatus and Pseudoscaphirhynchus, but still remain to be critically tested.  相似文献
