1. Exotic invasive species modify natural food webs in a way frequently hard to predict. In several aquatic environments in Brazil the introduction of Oreochromis niloticus (tilapia) was followed by changes in water quality. Yet, because of its rapid and easy growth, this fish has been used in many aquaculture programmes around the country. 2. To measure the effects of tilapia on the phytoplankton community and on water conditions of a large tropical reservoir in south‐eastern Brazil (Furnas Reservoir), we performed two in situ experiments using three controls (no fish) and three tilapia enclosures (high fish density). Abiotic and biotic parameters were measured at 4 day intervals for 28 days. 3. Fish presence increased nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) availability (ammonium 260 and 70% mean increase – first and second experiment; and total phosphorus 540 and 270% mean increase) via excretion. Nutrient recycling by fish can thus be significant in the nutrient dynamics of the reservoir. The higher chlorophyll a concentration in the experimental fish tanks (86 and 34 μg L?1, first and second experiment, respectively) was the result of a positive bottom‐up effect on the phytoplankton community (approximately 2 μg L?1 in the reservoir and control tank). 4. Because tilapia feed selectively on large algae (mainly cyanobacteria and diatoms), several small‐sized or mucilaginous colonial chlorophyceans proliferated at the end of the experiments. Thus, the trophic cascade revealed strong influences on algal composition as well as on biomass. 5. Tilapia can contribute to the eutrophication of a waterbody by both top‐down and bottom‐up forces. In particular, by supplying considerable amount of nutrients it promotes the increase of fast growing algae. Tilapia must be used cautiously in aquaculture to avoid unexpected environmental degradation.  相似文献

The income of small-scale fisheries of two urban reservoirs in Brazil: Represa Billings (127 km2) located in the metropolitan region of S?o Paulo, the capital city of the state of S?o Paulo and Lago Paranoá (38 km2) located in Brasília (DF), the capital city of Brazil were calculated and compared. Both fisheries are mainly based on the alien Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (more than 80% of the total catch). Although these reservoirs are nearly 900 km apart, their native fish fauna belong to the Upper Paraná Province. The Represa Billings fishers have, on average, a daily profit of 15.8 R dollars (8.4 U dollars mostly employing gill nets) and Lago Paranoá fishers 46.6 R dollars (24.9 U dollars, mostly employing cast nets), which is a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001). The profit of the fisheries is explained by the factor "reservoir" and covariate "days of fishing". Due to the increasing violence in the metropolitan region of S?o Paulo, the Represa Billings fishery is vanishing.  相似文献

We examined the impacts of three facultative planktivorous fishes, Congo tilapia (Tilapia rendalli), bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) and tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), and an obligate planktivorous fish, silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) on plankton community and water quality of a tropical eutrophic reservoir, Paranoá Reservoir, Brasília, Brazil, conducting both laboratory selective grazing experiments and an enclosure experiment. The first two species inhabit this reservoir and the remaining two are recommended for introduction. The field experiment was performed in ten limnocorrals (2 m3 each) and lasted five weeks. During the enclosure experiment, silver carp suppressed copepod nauplii, cladocerans and rotifers while the presence of tilapia and bluegill were associated with increased rotifers density. The dominant blue-green algae,Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (98% of phytoplankton biomass) was enhanced in the presence of bluegill, tilapia and tambaqui, but reduced in the presence of silver carp. This impact on plankton is in agreement with the results of the laboratory feeding trials. The observed alterations in water quality parameters in fish limnocorrals are discussed in relation to plankton community and eutrophication of this ecosystem. It is suggested that the control of the undesirable algaeC. raciborskii directly by silver carp grazing is a promising management tool.  相似文献

Sri Lanka is blessed with a large number of irrigation reservoirs. Depending on their hydrological regimes they are broadly categorized into perennial and seasonal reservoirs, and are secondarily used for inland fisheries. The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Sri Lanka initiated a programme to introduce culture‐based fisheries in minor perennial reservoirs (< 250 ha) whereby 15 minor perennial reservoirs situated in eight administrative districts were selected for introduction of culture‐based fisheries in its initial year of implementation. These reservoirs were stocked with fish fingerlings of catla Catla catla, rohu Labeo rohita, common carp Cyprinus carpio, Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus and post‐larvae of freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Stocking commenced in 2004; stocking data from 2004, 2005 and 2006 are considered in this study. Stocking densities varied from 217 to 870 ha?1 year?1, with an average density of 425 ha?1 year?1. Fish catch statistics for 2005, 2006 and 2007 were considered; high variability in fish yield among reservoirs as well as in some reservoirs between the years were observed. Mean annual fish yield from all 15 reservoirs increased from 57.3 to 208.1 kg ha?1 year?1 after the introduction of culture‐based fisheries. Overall fish production in all 15 reservoirs increased by 263%, ranging from 42.8 to 1344%. Overall contributions of Nile tilapia, catla, rohu, common carp and freshwater prawn to fish harvest were 47.4, 27.2, 16.9, 4.3 and 0.7%, respectively. Biomass gain per fingerling stocked with respect to catla, rohu, common carp and freshwater prawn are 0.51, 0.42, 0.26 and 0.04 kg, respectively, indicating attractive monetary gains through stocking of these species. Results indicate the viability of culture‐based fisheries in minor perennial reservoirs. Possible reasons for high variability in fish yield and areas for follow‐up studies are discussed.  相似文献

Water quality, microbial contamination, prior fish health, and variable results have been major impediments to identifying the cause and mechanism of fish mortality in standard aquarium‐format Pfiesteria bioassays. Therefore, we developed a sensitive 96‐h larval fish bioassay for assessing Pfiesteria spp. pathogenicity using six‐well tissue culture plates and 7‐day‐old larval cyprinodontid fish. We used the assay to test pathogenicity of several clonal lines of Pfiesteria piscicida Steidinger and Burkholder and P. shumwayae Glasgow and Burkholder that had been cultured with algal prey for 2 to 36 months. The P. shumwayae cultures exhibited 80%–100% cumulative mortality in less than 96 h at initial zoospore densities of approximately 1000 cells·mL?1. No fish mortalities occurred with P. piscicida at identical densities or in controls. In a dose‐response assay, we demonstrated a strong positive correlation between dinospore density and fish mortality in a highly pathogenic culture of P. shumwayae, generating a 96‐h LD50 of 108 zoospores·mL?1. Additionally, we applied the assay to evaluate a 38‐L P. shumwayae bioassay that was actively killing fish and compared results with those from exposures of juvenile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in a 500‐mL assay system. Water from the fish‐killing 38‐L assay was filtered and centrifuged to produce fractions dominated by dinoflagellates, bacteria, or presumed ichthyotoxin (cell‐free fraction). After 96 h, the larval fish assay exhibited 50%–100% cumulative mortality only in fractions containing dinoflagellates, with no mortalities occurring in the other fractions. The 500‐mL bioassay with tilapia produced inconsistent results and demonstrated no clear correlation between mortality and treatment. The new larval fish bioassay was demonstrated as a highly effective method to verify and evaluate dinoflagellate pathogenicity.  相似文献

Possible causes of deaths of Oreochromis niloticus in Lake Chivero were examined in relation to changes in limnological conditions monitored over a 25‐month period. The fish deaths coincided with the collapse of an algal bloom that had developed and builtup in the lake for 8 months. Chlorophyll a and dissolved oxygen increased to average concentrations of 42.4 μg l?1 and 10.9 mg l?1 respectively prior to the collapse of the bloom. Dissolved oxygen decreased when the bloom started to die off and coincided with the fish deaths when the average surface dissolved oxygen concentration in the lake was 3.9 mg l?1 and was at a depth of 5 m <2 mg l?1. Mortality probably resulted from depressed oxygen levels caused by the high oxygen demand from the massive algal die‐off and released algal toxins. This is the first time that die‐off of algae has been linked to fish‐kills in Lake Chivero as occurs in other hypereutrophic systems.  相似文献

1. The major aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that nutrient enrichment and the introduction of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), an exotic omnivorous filter‐feeding fish, operate interdependently to regulate plankton communities and water transparency of a tropical reservoir in the semi‐arid northeastern Brazil. 2. A field experiment was performed for 5 weeks in 20 enclosures (9.8 m3) to which four treatments were randomly allocated: tilapia addition (F), nutrient addition (N), tilapia and nutrient addition (F + N) and a control treatment with no tilapia or nutrient addition (C). A two‐way repeated measures anova was undertaken to test for time, tilapia and nutrient effects and their interactions on water transparency, total phosphorus and total nitrogen concentrations, phytoplankton biovolume and zooplankton biomass. 3. Nutrient addition had no effect except on rotifer biomass, but there were significant fish effects on the biomass of total zooplankton, copepod nauplii, rotifers, cladocerans and calanoid copepods and on the biovolume of total phytoplankton, large algae (GALD ≥ 50 μm), Bacillariophyta and Zygnemaphyceae and on Secchi depth. In addition, we found significant interaction effects between tilapia and nutrients on Secchi depth and rotifers. Overall, tilapia decreased the biomass of most zooplankton taxa and large algae (diatoms) and decreased water transparency, while nutrient enrichment increased the biomass of rotifers, but only in the absence of tilapia. 4. In conclusion, the influence of fish on the reservoir plankton community and water transparency was significant and even greater than that of nutrient loading. This suggests that biomanipulation of filter‐feeding tilapias may be of importance for water quality management of eutrophic reservoirs in tropical semi‐arid regions.  相似文献

Since bivalve mussels are able to graze heavily on bacteria, in this paper it is hypothesized that when mussels are cultured with fish, the filtering efficiency of the mussels will keep the bacterial population below a certain threshold and thus assist in reducing the risk of bacterial disease outbreaks. The ability of the filter‐feeding bivalve mussel Pilsbryoconcha exilis to control Streptococcus agalactiae was tested in a laboratory‐scale tilapia culture system. Juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), the bivalve mussel as well as the bacteria were cultured at different combinations using four treatments: treatment‐1: mussel and bacteria but no fish, treatment‐2: tilapia and mussel but no bacteria, treatment‐3: tilapia and bacteria but no mussel, and treatment‐4: tilapia, mussels, and bacteria. All treatments were run in three replicates; stocking rates were 10 tilapia juveniles; five mussels; and about 3.5 × 105 colony forming units (CFU) ml?1 of bacteria in 50‐L aquaria with 40‐L volume. The mussel reduced the bacterial population by 83.6–87.1% in a 3‐week period whereas in the absence of the mussel, the bacterial counts increased by 31.5%. Oresence of the mussel also resulted in significantly higher growth and lower mortality of tilapia juveniles than when the mussel was absent. The results of this experiment suggest that the freshwater mussel P. exilis could control the population of S. agalactiae in a laboratory‐scale tilapia culture system. Future studies should focus on the dynamic interactions among fish, mussels, and bacteria as well as on how input such as feed and other organic materials affect these interactions.  相似文献

Response of a eutrophic, shallow subtropical lake to reduced nutrient loading   总被引:11,自引:1,他引:10
1. Lake Apopka (FL, U.S.A.) was subjected to decades of high nutrient loading from farms developed in the 1940s on converted riparian wetlands. Consequences included perennially high densities of cyanobacteria, low water transparency, elimination of submerged vegetation, modified fish community, and deposition of nutrient‐rich, flocculent sediments. 2. Initial steps were taken to reduce phosphorus (P) loading. Through strengthened regulation and purchase of farms for restoration, external P loading was reduced on average from 0.56 to 0.25 g P m?2 year?1 (55%) starting in 1993. The P loading target for the lake is 0.13 g P m?2 year?1. 3. For the first 6 years of P loading reduction the annual sedimentation coefficient (σ) averaged 13% less than the prior long‐term value (0.97 versus 1.11 year?1). The sedimentation coefficient, σ, was lower in the last 3 years of the study, but this period included extreme low‐water conditions and may not be representative. Annual σ was negative (net P flux to the water column) only 1 year. 4. Wind velocity explained 43% of the variation in σ during the period before reductions in total phosphorus (TP) concentration of lake water, but this proportion dropped to 6% after TP reductions. 5. Annual mean TP concentrations differed considerably from values predicted from external loading and hydraulic retention time using the Vollenweider–Organization for Economic Co‐operation and Development relationship. Reductions in lake water TP concentration fit model predictions better when multiyear (3‐year) mean values were used. 6. Evidence available to date indicates that this shallow, eutrophic lake responded to the decrease in external P loading. Neither recycling of sediment P nor wind‐driven resuspension of sediments prevented improvements in water quality. Reductions in TP concentration were evident about two TP‐resident times (2 × 0.9 year) after programmes began to reduce P loading. Improvements in concentrations of chlorophyll a and total suspended solids as well as in Secchi transparency lagged changes in lake‐water TP concentration but reached similar magnitudes during the study.  相似文献

1. Responses of zooplankton to nutrient enrichment and fish predation were studied in 1998 and 1999 by carrying out parallel mesocosm experiments in six lakes across Europe. 2. Zooplankton community structure, biomass and responses to nutrient and fish manipulation showed geographical and year‐to‐year differences. Fish had a greater influence than nutrients in regulating zooplankton biomass and especially the relative abundances of different functional groups of zooplankton. When fish reduced the biomass of large crustaceans, there was a complementary increase in the biomasses of smaller crustacean species and rotifers. 3. High abundance of submerged macrophytes provided refuge for zooplankton against fish predation but this refuge effect differed notably in magnitude among sites. 4. Large crustacean grazers (Daphnia, Diaphanosoma, Sida and Simocephalus) were crucial in controlling algal biomass, while smaller crustacean grazers and rotifers were of minor importance. Large grazers were able to control phytoplankton biomass even under hypereutrophic conditions (up to 1600 μg TP L?1) when grazer biomass was high (>80–90 μg dry mass L?1) or accounted for >30% of the grazer community. 5. The littoral zooplankton community was less resistant to change following nutrient enrichment in southern Spain, at high temperatures (close to 30 °C), than at lower temperatures (17–23 °C) characterising the other sites. This lower resistance was because of a greater importance of nutrients than zooplankton in controlling algal biomass. 6. Apart from the reduced role of large crustacean grazers at the lowest latitude, no consistent geographical patterns were observed in the responses of zooplankton communities to nutrient and fish manipulation.  相似文献

The effects of fish kill and different fish stocks on the phytoplankton and zooplankton dynamics were studied in a shallow hypertrophic reservoir system. When fish stock was below 100 kg ha−1, nutrient availability was not the main limiting factor for growth of phytoplankton. Consequently top‐down forces controlled phytoplankton. In the years with high fish stock (>100 kg ha−1) the bottom‐up forces dominated as nutrient availability was the main limiting factor for growth of phytoplankton. We can conclude that significant water quality improvement can be achieved in the reservoir system by decreasing fish stock below 100 kg ha−1. Although clear‐water phase could be stabilised temporary by macrophytes, stabilisation of good water quality requires continuous regulation of fish community. (© 2004 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In response to the global sustainability drive to lower fishmeal (FM) inclusion in aquatic feeds, exogenous enzymes can improve nutrient digestibility in monogastric plant‐based diets. A 80‐day experiment was conducted to evaluate the combined effects of xylanase and phytase on digestibility, trace mineral utilisation and growth in juvenile red tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus x O. mossambicus, (48.8 g ± 13.9; μ ± STD) fed declining FM diets. Basal diets were formulated to contain 0, 3 and 5% FM with and without xylanase (0.385 g kg?1) and phytase (0.075 g kg?1), forming six treatments. Each treatment was randomly assigned to four replicates, 20 fish tank?1; mean water temperature 28.98 ± 0.73°C. Although the size of the effects was modest, growth performances (feed intake, FCR, growth rate) decreased with lower FM levels (P < 0.05) but improved with enzyme supplementation. Enzyme supplementation increased P digestibility and trace mineral uptake (P < 0.05), but no effects were seen on protein digestibility and N retention. Nevertheless, tilapia fed the enzyme‐supplemented 3% FM and control 5% FM diets performed comparably (P < 0.05). This potentially justifies a 2% FM reduction for tilapia diets using exogenous xylanase and phytase without significant effects on digestibility, trace mineral utilisation and growth.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Following fish removal, the water quality in biomanipulated lakes often improves concomitant with decreased phosphorus (P) levels. Because the decrease in P concentrations derives most probably either directly or indirectly from fish, which are the main target of biomanipulation, this study examined the P release of 0+, 1+ and 2+ roach [Rutilus rutilus (L.)] and changes in the P release during summer in a shallow eutrophic lake in Finland. 2. The P release was separated into P derived from benthic and littoral food items and into recycled P derived from feeding on zooplankton, to estimate the contribution of net P additions to the water column by the fish to the increase in P concentrations of the lake water (75–110 mg P m?3) in summer 1991–96. 3. Individual P release of roach by both egestion and excretion was estimated with a bioenergetics model. The size of the roach population was estimated with a depletion method and the proportions of different age groups from catch samples, using a programme separating mixtures of normal distributions. The sensitivity of the release estimates to variation in the growth data was estimated with the jackknife technique. 4. The biomass‐specific P release by 0+ roach (0.36–0.54 mg P g?1 day?1) was higher than that by older roach (0.07–0.16 mg P g?1 day?1) throughout the summer. The P release by the whole roach population deriving from benthic and littoral food items (0.7–2.7 mg m?3 during July to August, representing a net addition to the water column) was 5–19 times lower in 1991–96 than the recycled P release deriving from zooplankton (8.9–25.7 mg m?3), and too low to explain the increase in the P concentration of the lake water during the summer. Because the biomass‐specific P release and roach diet composition vary with fish age, it is important to consider the age structure of fish populations to obtain correct estimates of P release and net additions to the water column. 5. The removal of roach by fishing diminished the roach stock greatly, but the fish‐mediated P release to the water column changed little. This effect was because of the high compensation capacity of the roach population, leading to high recruitment of young fish with higher biomass‐specific P release rates. 6. External loading is very low during summer months and therefore it cannot explain the increase in the P concentration of water during that time. Internal loading from the sediment might be as high as 10.2 mg P m?2 day?1, i.e. 50 times higher than the maximum net P addition by the total roach population.  相似文献

1. In addition to effects of direct predation by planktivorous fish, nutrient recycling by fish may also contribute to structuring foodwebs in lakes. There is little evidence, however, about whether underyearling fish undergoing several ontogenetic diet shifts may have a comparable bottom-up impact. 2. This study examined seasonal patterns of phosphorus (P) concentration and external load, phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthos, and diet shifts in three underyearling fish [perch (Perca fluviatilis), roach (Rutilus rutilus) and ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus)] in the shallow, hypertrophic biomanipulated Bautzen reservoir, Germany. Phosphorus metabolism of fish was calculated by a balanced bioenergetics model on the basis of fish diet, growth and water temperature. 3. The fish showed several shifts from planktivory to other food sources during the sampling period from May to September. These shifts were probably caused by the seasonal succession of the zooplankton community, mainly the midsummer decline of Daphnia galeata. 4. The diet shifts in fish also had consequences for the amount of P consumed and released. During periods of dominant zooplanktivory, the excretion of P did not exceed the removal of P stored in pelagic prey. By contrast, if benthivory dominated, fish subsidized the pelagic P pool by excreting more P from benthic prey than had been removed from the pelagic area. This occurred predominantly in perch and ruffe during periods of low zooplankton biomass, whereas the roach ate more algae and therefore excreted less P of benthic origin. 5. Phosphorus release by underyearling fish was estimated at a maximum of 0.1 mg m–3 JY day–1. This value was negligible compared with both the external load of P to Bautzen reservoir and the concentration of P in the pelagic area during summer. It is therefore concluded that both the predominance of underyearling zooplanktivorous fish and the high Daphnia biomass during certain periods of the year in the Bautzen reservoir may be the reason that nutrient release by the fish structured the foodweb only marginally. 6. This study suggests that biomanipulation has altered both top-down and bottom-up impacts of fish in Bautzen reservoir. The highest efficiency of foodweb manipulations may be obtained after reduction of the external P loading below a certain threshold. In turn, if external restoration of eutrophied lakes is not accompanied by changes in fish community, then the combined forces of strong zooplanktivory and high P recycling of dense stocks of zooplanktivorous and benthivorous fish may hold the water in a eutrophic-like stage, even if external load has been significantly reduced.  相似文献

This study determined the effect of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and handling stress on the spermiation and milt response of silver perch Leiopotherapon plumbeus based on the measurement of spermatocrit, sperm density, and milt production. Compared to saline‐injected fish, the mean spermatocrit (or packed sperm) of hCG‐treated fish was significantly lower at 18 h (47.9%) and 30 h (40.2%) post‐injection while mean sperm density was significantly lower at 30 h post‐injection (3.6 × 106 cells μl?1) but not at 18 h. At 18 h (1.8 μl g‐BW?1) and 30 h (2.5 μl g‐BW?1) post‐injection, mean milt production of hCG‐treated fish was significantly higher than in the saline group. Milt consistency was also thinner in the hCG‐treated group. Mean sperm density of handled fish (18.0 × 106 cells μl?1) was significantly lower than control fish (23.4 × 106 cells μl?1). However, mean sperm density of handled plus saline‐injected (16.2 × 106 cells μl?1) and handled plus hCG‐treated fish (8.4 × 106 cells μl?1) was significantly lower than in the control goup. Having thicker milt consistency, mean spermatocrit and milt production of handled (77.5%; 1.1 μl g‐BW?1, respectively) and handled plus saline‐injected fish (75.4%; 1.1 μl g‐BW?1, respectively) were not significantly different from the control fish (76.2%; 1.3 μl g‐BW?1, respectively). Handled plus hCG‐treated fish had the lowest mean sperm density (8.4 × 106 cells μl?1) and spermatocrit (54.7%), but had the highest mean milt production (5.5 μl g‐BW?1) among the treatment groups. These results demonstrate that the hCG injection effectively induces spermiation and milt expression and that handling‐related stress negatively affects such responses. The spermatocrit method may be used to assess the spermiation and milt response of silver perch.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare haematological and serum biochemical parameters of cultured and wild specimens of the northern snakehead, Channa argus, to establish baseline values. Thirty sexually immature and disease‐free wild fish (37.70 ± 13.68 cm total length, 555.3 ± 449.0 g weight) and 30 cultured fish (36.82 ± 1.72 cm total length, 450.5 ± 58.8 g weight) were examined. In cultured northern snakehead, the average values of alanine aminotransferases (370.1 IU L?1), aspartate amino transferases (1145.3 IU L?1), albumin (15.84 g L?1), direct billuribin (6.15 μmol L?1), urea (1.40 mmol L?1), glucose (21.54 mmol L?1) and cholesterol levels (6.60 mmol L?1) were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than in the wild fish. In wild specimens the corresponding values were 9.81 IU L?1, 394.1 U L?1, 12.90 g L?1, 2.57 μmol L?1, 0.97, 2.36 and 4.38 mmol L?1, respectively. No significant difference (P > 0.05) was found for total protein, globulin, total bilirubin, chromium, sodium, chloride or triglyceride levels between wild and cultured populations. The mean values of the red blood cell (RBC) counts, hematocrit, haemoglobin, and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the cultured population, while the values of the white blood cell (WBC) counts, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the wild population. The study showed that the environmental conditions significantly impacted the status of the fish. It is suggested that these physiological parameters can be conveniently employed as health monitoring tools in fish culture practices.  相似文献

1. The St. Johns River Water Management District removed over 5.4 million kg of gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) from Lake Apopka, FL during 1993–2005, as a means of reducing lake phosphorus and phytoplankton concentrations and improving water clarity. Other steps included reduction of external nutrient inputs and operation of a treatment wetland. We measured nutrient excretion by Lake Apopka gizzard shad to quantify the nutrient effect of this biomanipulation. 2. Both N and P excretion were significantly affected by fish body mass and temperature. Larger fish had lower mass‐specific rates of excretion than smaller fish. 3. High water temperature increased P excretion to a much greater extent than N, resulting in a low N : P of nutrient excretion in midsummer. The N : P of excretion was lower than has been observed in other systems, probably because of higher water temperature. 4. Removal of gizzard shad >200 g prevented the annual release of 45 800 kg N year?1 (3.46 kg N ha?1 year?1) and 7700 kg P year?1 (0.62 kg P ha?1 year?1) on average. The actual impact on the P cycle varied substantially from year to year (range 7900–78 800 kg N year?1; 1200–14 800 kg P year?1), primarily because of fluctuations in the catch. 5. On an annual basis, the P directly removed in fish tissues was similar to that removed by the treatment wetland. The P excretion prevented by the removal of fish was approximately 20% of the reduction in external P loading achieved during 1993–2005. 6. In the short term, most of the P demand of planktonic primary producers is met through recycling of P, which greatly exceeds external P loading. Depending on population biomass, phosphorus excretion by the resident gizzard shad population was similar in magnitude to the P release by diffusive flux from the sediments.  相似文献

1. We estimated nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loading into wetlands by carnivorous waterbirds with alternative physiological models using a food‐intake and an excreta‐production approach. The models were applied for non‐breeding and breeding Dutch inland carnivorous waterbird populations to quantify their contribution to nutrient loading on a landscape scale. 2. Model predictions based on food intake exceeded those based on excretion by 59–62% for N and by 2–36% for P, depending on dietary assumptions. Uncertainty analysis indicated that the intake model was most affected by errors in energy requirement, while the excretion model was dependent on faecal nutrient composition. 3. Per capita loading rate of non‐breeders increased with body mass from 0.3–0.8 g N day?1 and 0.15 g P day?1 in little gulls Larus minutus to 4.5–11.5 g N day?1 and 2.1–3.2 g P day?1 in great cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo. For breeding birds, the estimated nutrient loading by a family unit over the entire breeding period ranged between 17.6–443.0 g N and 8.6 g P for little tern Sterna albifrons to 619.6–1755.6 g N and 316.2–498.1 g P for great cormorants. 4. We distinguished between external (i.e. importing) and internal (i.e. recycling) nutrient loading by carnivorous waterbirds. For the Netherlands, average external‐loading estimates ranged between 38.1–91.5 tonnes N and 16.7–18.2 tonnes P per year, whilst internal‐loading estimates ranged between 53.1–140.5 tonnes N and 25.2–39.2 tonnes P and per year. The average contribution of breeding birds was estimated to be 17% and 32% for external and internal loading respectively. Most important species were black‐headed gull Larus ridibundus and mew gull Larus canus for external loading, and great cormorant and grey heron Ardea cinerea for internal loading. 5. On a landscape scale, loading by carnivorous waterbirds was of minor importance for freshwater habitats in the Netherlands with 0.26–0.65 kg N ha?1 a?1 and 0.12–0.16 kg P ha?1 a?1. However, on a local scale, breeding colonies may be responsible for significant P loading.  相似文献

1. Nutrient and fish manipulations in mesocosms were carried out on food‐web interactions in a Mediterranean shallow lake in south‐east Spain. Nutrients controlled biomass of phytoplankton and periphyton, while zooplankton, regulated by planktivorous fish, influenced the relative percentages of the dominant phytoplankton species. 2. Phytoplankton species diversity decreased with increasing nutrient concentration and planktivorous fish density. Cyanobacteria grew well in both turbid and clear‐water states. 3. Planktivorous fish increased concentrations of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP). Larger zooplankters (mostly Ceriodaphnia and copepods) were significantly reduced when fish were present, whereas rotifers increased, after fish removal of cyclopoid predators and other filter feeders (cladocerans, nauplii). The greatest biomass and diversity of zooplankton was found at intermediate nutrient levels, in mesocosms without fish and in the presence of macrophytes. 4. Water level decrease improved underwater light conditions and favoured macrophyte persistence. Submerged macrophytes (Chara spp.) outcompeted algae up to an experimental nutrient loading equivalent to added concentrations of 0.06 mg L?1 PO4‐P and 0.6 mg L?1 NO3‐N, above which an exponential increase in periphyton biomass and algal turbidity caused characean biomass to decline. 5. Declining water levels during summer favoured plant‐associated rotifer species and chroococcal cyanobacteria. High densities of chroococcal cyanobacteria were related to intermediate nutrient enrichment and the presence of small zooplankton taxa, while filamentous cyanobacteria were relatively more abundant in fishless mesocosms, in which Crustacea were more abundant, and favoured by dim underwater light. 6. Benthic macroinvertebrates increased significantly at intermediate nutrient levels but there was no relationship with planktivorous fish density. 7. The thresholds of nutrient loading and in‐lake P required to avoid a turbid state and maintain submerged macrophytes were lower than those reported from temperate shallow lakes. Mediterranean shallow lakes may remain turbid with little control of zooplankton on algal biomass, as observed in tropical and subtropical lakes. Nutrient loading control and macrophyte conservation appear to be especially important in these systems to maintain high water quality.  相似文献
