In the eggs of the gastropods Nassarius reticulatus, Buccinum undatum, and Crepidula fornicata, local surface differentiations are described, using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The differentiations consist of special microvilli (Nassarius), ridges composed of microvilli (Buccinum), or extensive surface folds (Crepidula). They occur on the polar lobes of these eggs and it is argued that a relation may exist between the surface structures and the localization or expression of the morphogenetic factors present in the polar lobes. The presence of the surface differentiations before the appearance of the polar lobe and their persistence after resorption of the lobes are shown in Nassarius and Crepidula eggs. Evidence is presented that the differentiated area at the vegetal pole of the Nassarius eggs corresponds to the former contact area of the oocyte with the follicle cells in the ovary. This correspondence is considered as an argument in favor of the theory that the egg cortex may locally acquire special properties under the influence of the surrounding structures in the ovary.  相似文献

Summary The regio olfactoria of the mole, Talpa europaea, was studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Peculiar structural differentiations, i.e. ovoid-shaped, balloon-like protuberances were found on the surface of the supporting cells. The apical portion of these protuberances contained finely dispersed granular material, whereas in their central part vesicular extensions of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum were observed.  相似文献

Summary Two different types of ependymal cells were found in the subcommissural organ (SCO) of Natrix maura. Most secretory cells showed morphological features resembling the general structure and ultrastructure of cells in the SCO of other vertebrates. This report describes a second population of cells lining a portion of the dorsal groove of the SCO. These cells were not selectively stained by chromalum-hematoxylin and, under the electron microscope, they were characterized by scarce surface differentiations, sparse apical cytoplasm and short basal processes. Flat, parallel cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum produced vesicles that appeared to be transported to the well-developed Golgi apparatus. Dense secretory granules about 200 nm in diameter were found in the Golgi region. Similar granules were seen in the vicinity of the apical plasma membrane; some of them opened toward the ventricle. All these characteristics clearly differentiate this cell group from the other secretory cells lining the SCO laterally and ventrally.  相似文献

Electron microscopy discloses nerve endings in contact with gland cells situated in the labrum of Daphnia. Swellings of nerve fibers are in close contact with gland cell membranes, either on the cell surface or inserted into infoldings of plasma membrane. The axonal processes are single or double and lack glial wrappings. Inside the nerve fibers are vesicles of different sizes and electron density. These include granular vesicles, which often are dense-cored, and also clearer vesicles. Some presynaptic differentiations lie along the contact line of the axonal process with the gland cell membrane. The significance of the vesicles is discussed in terms of their possible content of biogenic amines, as described in other invertebrates.  相似文献

Plagiostomum lemani possesses extremely specialized intraepidermal sensory cells. These obvious photoreceptors, which are not visible with the light microscope, are ciliary aggregations located in an intracellular cavity. The numerous spiralled cilia have the classic 9 × 2 + 2 arrangement at their base and a modified pattern of microtubules apically. The discovered differentiations do not show a connection to the surface. Neither mantle cells nor pigment cells have been found. The structural similarities with other epidermal photoreceptors of species among the different taxa of free-living Plathelminthes are outlined. Besides the larval stages of the taxon Polycladida known so far, the same kind of light-sensing photoreceptive cell has never been described in any other species of the Plathelminthes. Sexual systems and association with several ecological and life history attributes were examined for 977 native angiosperms of subclass Rosidae in Siberia. The majority of angiosperms in Siberia are hermaphrodites (87.7%, N = 867). The most widespread forms of sexual differentiations are andromonoecy, gynodioecy, and dioecy. The rarest forms of sexual differentiations are monoecy, trioecy, and androdioecy. Seven of 34 families are the richest in species with sexual differentiation: Aceraceae, Elaeagnaceae, Haloragaceae, Rhamnaceae, Dipsacaceae, Apiaceae, and Geraniaceae.  相似文献

Sensory epithelia of the oral tube, a fungiform body anterior to the tentacles and of the terminal knob of tentacles, were studied in Ovatella myosotis by electron microscopy. All three epithelia consist of columnar support cells, sensory cells, and, except in the oral tube, numerous goblet cells. The epithelia differ significantly in their apical differentiations. In the oral tube an outer layer is formed by irregularly bent villi of support cells completely embedded in a surface coat. Cilia and cytofila of the dendrites of sensory cells intertwine throughout the entire depth of the villous layer. In the fungiform sensory body some of the villi of support cells are singly branched. Their basal region is free of a surface coat. In this region cytofila and cilia of dendrites form a spongy layer, some cytofila extending into the surface coat. In the tentacular terminal knob the villi of the support cells branch dichotomously once or twice, a single villus thus ending with 2–4 tips. Only these terminal twigs are invested with the surface coat. The cytofila and dendritic cilia are confined to a broad spongy layer underneath. Three types of dendrites are present. They differ in their number of cilia, structure of basal bodies and occurrence in the three epithelia. Dendritic cytofila are most abundant in the tentacular terminal knob and least numerous in the oral tube. The observations are discussed with respect to corresponding epithelia in other pulmonates, the homology of the fungiform body, and possible functional correlates of structural features.  相似文献

Summary Development of lethal translucida pupae is under normal conditions predominantly blocked in the early pupal stages. Imaginal differentiation, though almost exclusively restricted to the head and thorax, is exhibited in only 20–30% of the individuals. When ltr pupae are subjected to pure oxygen both the frequency and the intensity of imaginal differentiation is strongly increased. Then 60–70% of the pupae shows metamorphosis of the head and thorax, whereas abdominal differentiations could be observed in about 20%.The minimal time during which the pupae must be kept in oxygen, to give a maximum percentage of metamorphosing individuals in air, is 100–120 hours for differentiations of the head and thorax and about 140 hours for those of the abdomen. These experimental results suggest that part of the incomplete metamorphosis in homozygous ltr pupae is due to an insufficient supply of oxygen. The differentiation of normal eye implants within non-metamorphosed ltr pupae showed that the reaction capacity of the imaginal tissues in the ltr/ltr genotype is also significantly weakened. In the discussion of the results, our data have been related to those of Chen on lowered oxygen consumption in ltr pupae. It seems probable that in those ltr pupae showing metamorphosis of the head and thorax, a better oxygen supply existed already from the time of puparium formation. With 6 text-figures.This work was started in 1949 in the Institute of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy of the University of Zurich.  相似文献

To more confidently assess phylogenetic relationships among astome ciliates, we obtained small subunit (SSU) rRNA sequences from nine species distributed in six genera and three families: Almophrya bivacuolata, Eudrilophrya complanata, Metaracoelophrya sp. 1, Metaracoelophrya sp. 2, Metaracoelophrya intermedia, Metaradiophrya sp., Njinella prolifera, Paraclausilocola constricta n. gen., n. sp., and Paraclausilocola elongata n. sp. The two new species in the proposed new clausilocolid genus Paraclausilocola n. gen. are astomes with no attachment apparatus, two files of contractile vacuoles, and an arc-like anterior suture that has differentiations of thigmotactic ciliature on the anterior ends of the left kineties of the upper surface. Phylogenetic analyses were undertaken using neighbor-joining, Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood, and maximum parsimony. The nine species of astomes formed a strongly supported clade, showing the subclass Astomatia to be monophyletic and a weakly supported sister clade to the scuticociliates. There were two strongly supported clades within the astomes. However, genera assigned to the same family were found in different clades, and genera assigned to the same order were found in both clades. Thus, astome taxa appear to be paraphyletic when morphology is used to assign species to genera.

Primary processes in the realization of morphogenesis in Acetabularia
Summary Primary processes in the realization of morphogenesis during whorl and cap differentiation in Acetabularia cells are described. It has been demonstrated that the morphological appearance of these specific cellular differentiations is initiated by characteristic lytic processes within the already existant cell wall. It is proposed that they are induced by specific cytoplasmic processes.

A new culture medium, ZW, and the preparation of an extract of adult Drosophila, FX, are described, which for the first time allow the in vitro proliferation of normal Drosophila cells in the absence of undefined heterologous components. Cells from 6-hour-old Drosophila embryos can extensively differentiate and/or proliferate in ZW supplemented with FX and insulin. Cells isolated from wing discs of 90–120-hour-old larvae require ecdysterone for proliferation in ZW, in addition to FX and insulin. Explanted ovaries, testes, genital discs and intact or halved wing discs of 100-hour-old larvae grow in the same medium, at least in part due to cell proliferation. High concentrations of ecdysterone prevent differentiation and/or proliferation of cells from embryos and from wing discs and cause the lysis of most isolated imaginal disc cells grown in vitro, while cuticular differentiations are induced in wing discs and disc fragments grown in vitro.  相似文献

The egg chamber of Drosophila melanogaster consists of 16 interconnected cells surrounded by a monolayer of follicle cells. Each 16 cell cluster (from which the oocyte and 15 nurse cells differentiate) arises within the germarial region of an ovariole. To study the ultrastructure of the early stages in the formation and differentiation of egg chambers, a three dimensional reconstruction was made from serial thin sections through a germarium from a 24-hour old, virgin female. The germarium was found to be subdivided into three regions: (1) The mitotically active area where clusters of 16 cells originate from a series of cystocyte divisions, (2) the region where these cells interact with mesodermal cells, and (3) the region where the germarial cyst is transformed into the first egg chamber in the vitellarium. Since cystocytes were found to decrease in size with each division, the possibility exists that cell size may determine when the divisions cease. Models are presented which mimic with varying degrees of success the developmental changes the germarial cells undergo with time. Hypothesis are developed to explain why stem line oogonia are restricted to the anterior portion of the germarium, why mesodermal cells first interact with cystocytes in region 2, and why the oocyte is oriented posteriorly. The nuclear differentiations of the component cells of the chamber are described and correlated with observed differences in radiosensitivity. Symbionts were observed in the germaria of several strains of Drosophila, and the bearing of these findings upon nutritional studies is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Myomuscular junctions between muscle fibers in the gill sacs of the Atlantic hagfish, Myxine glutinosa, were examined by electron microscopy. According to the presence of sarcolemmal differentiations typical of myotendinous junctions, the myomuscular junctions can be described as a symmetric myotendinous junction  相似文献

Summary The photoreceptors ofPogaina suecica correspond to the type of pigment cup ocelli. Each eye consists of one cup cell and three sensory cells. The most conspicuous differentiations of these eyes are lens elements formed by giant mitochondria densely filled with homogeneous electron-dense material. From electron microscopical findings available to date it is hypothesized that mitochondrial lensing might be an autapomorphy of a taxon comprising the Provorticidae Kirgisellinae, Dalyelliidae and Graffillidae groups which are ascribed to the paraphyletic Dalyellioida.Abbreviations l 1–3 lenses - npc nucleus of the pigment cell - pc pigment cell - pg pigment granule - rh rhabdomeres - sc 1–3 sensory cells  相似文献

A comparative study has been made of the mucogenic epidermis of the common carp, Cyprinus carpio var. communis, and the three Indian major carps, Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhina mrigala: on the basis of epidermis structural organization, these species are easily differentiated. The epithelial cells in the superficial layer, as in most fishes, show secretory activity, evidenced by positive histochemical reactions, which is high in C. carpio var. communis, moderate in C. catla and low in L. rohita and C. mrigala. The epithelial cells in the underlying two or three layers also give positive reactions, though their intensity is relatively weak. The mucous cells in C. carpio var. communis are distributed in large numbers arranged in several superimposed layers in the outer regions of the epidermis, whereas in C. catla they are fewer in number and are widely separated in the surface layers as well as in the deeper layers of the epidermis; in both species the mucous cells appear rounded, large, and open on the surface by wide pores. In contrast, in L. rohita and C. mrigala the mucous cells are smaller, restricted mainly to the superficial layer, close together in a single row, and open on the surface by narrow pores. The overall density of mucous cells in L. rohita and C. mrigala, as in C. catla, is much lower than in C. carpio var. communis. In the epidermis of C. carpio var. communis there are a large number of mucous cells, and the few club cells are restricted to the deeper layers. In contrast, in the epidermis of the three Indian major carp the overall density of the mucous cells is much lower and the club cells are very numerous. It is suggested that the high density of club cells compensates an overall low density of mucous cells as an adaptation for an effective defence mechanism. Increased mucus production in the epidermis of C. carpio var. communis, as evidenced by a large number of mucous cells in outer regions and high secretory activity of superficial layer epithelial cells, is associated with increased precipitation of mud held in suspension, needed as an adaptation to the species’peculiar bottom-scooping habits. The varied density of the taste buds in the epidermis of the four carp is associated with their feeding habits.  相似文献

The surface morphology of Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites of HM 1:IMSS (axenic and monoxenic) and HK9 (axenic) strains cultured on plastic and MDCK cell substrates was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The conditions for processing trophozoites were determined by comparing the SEM observations with the morphology of living amebas examined by light microscopy. The most frequent surface differentiations in all the amebas observed with SEM were lobopodia. Round cytoplasmic projections were found in approximately half of the axenic amebas. Endocytic stomas and filopodia were more common in monoxenic cultures while the uroid was found in only 2–8% of all examined amebas. The basal surfaces of the trophozoites, involved in both attachment and cytolysis, showed no unusual features, except for the presence of a small number of short filopodia at the outer edge. No differences were found in the morphology of amebas grown on artificial and natural substrates. These observations demonstrate that there are significant quantitative differences in the surface morphology of cultured trophozoites of different strains of E. histolytica and that association with bacteria produces an increase in the relative number of surface specializations of the parasite.  相似文献

Developing ovarian follicles of Bacillus rossius have been examined ultrastructurally in an attempt to understand how inception of vitel-logenesis is controlled. Early vitellogenic follicles are characterized by a thick cuboidal epithelium that is highly interlocked with the oocyte plasma membrane. Gap junctional contacts are present both at the follicle cell/oocyte interface and in between adjacent follicle cells. In addition, microvilli of follicle cells protrude deeply into the cortical ooplasm of these early vitellogenic oocytes. With the onset of vitellogenesis, wide intercellular spaces appear in the follicle cell epithelium and at the follicle cell/oocyte interface. Gap junctions become progressively reduced both on the follicle cell surface and on the oocyte plasma membrane. Microvilli from the two cell types no longer interlock. From a theoretical standpoint each of the two structural differentiations present at the follicle cell/oocyte interface—gap junctions and follicle cell microvilli—could potentially trigger inception of vitellogenesis. Gap junctions might permit the passage of a regulatory molecule, transferring from follicle cells to oocyte, which would control the assembly of coated pits on the oocyte plasma membrane. Alternatively cell interaction via microvilli might induce the appearance of coated pits, thus creating a membrane focus for vitellogenin receptors. Both possibilities are discussed in relation to current literature.  相似文献

Meiotic prophase in Schizosaccharomyces pombe is characterized by striking nuclear movements and the formation of linear elements along chromosomes instead of tripartite synaptonemal complexes. We analysed the organization of nuclei and microtubules in cells of fission yeasts undergoing sexual differentiation. S. japonicus var. versatilis and S. pombe cells were studied in parallel, taking advantage of the better cytology in S. versatilis. During conjugation, microtubules were directed towards the mating projection. These microtubules seem to lead the haploid nuclei together in the zygote by interaction with the spindle pole bodies at the nuclear periphery. After karyogamy, arrays of microtubules emanating from the spindle pole body of the diploid nucleus extended to both cell poles. The same differentiated microtubule configuration was elaborated upon induction of azygotic meiosis in S. pombe. The cyclic movements of the elongated nuclei between the cell poles is reflected by a dynamic and coordinated shortening and lengthening of the two microtubule arrays. When the nucleus was at a cell end, one array was short while the other bridged the whole cell length. Experiments with inhibitors showed that microtubules are required for karyogamy and for the elongated shape and movement of nuclei during meiotic prophase. In both fission yeasts the SPBs and nucleoli are at the leading ends of the moving nuclei. Astral and cytoplasmic microtubules were also prominent during meiotic divisions and sporulation. We further show that in S. versatilis the linear elements formed during meiotic prophase are similar to those in S. pombe. Tripartite synaptonemal complexes were never detected. Taken together, these findings suggest that S. pombe and S. versatilis share basic characteristics in the organization of microtubules and the structure and behaviour of nuclei during their meiotic cell cycle. The prominent differentiations of microtubules and nuclei may be involved in the pairing, recombination, and segregation of meiotic chromosomes.  相似文献
