Axonally transported protein labeled many trigeminal nerve endings in subepithelial regions of the anterior hard palate of the rat. Sensory endings were most numerous in the lamina propria near the tips of the palatal rugae where large connective tissue and epithelial papillae interdigitated. Two kinds of sensory ending were found there: “free” endings, and a variety of corpuscular endings. The “free” sensory endings consisted of bundles of unmyelinated axons separated from the connective tissue by relatively unspecialized Schwann cells covering part or all of their surface and a completely continuous basal lamina; they were commonly found running parallel to the epithelium or near corpuscular endings. The corpuscular sensory endings all had a specialized nerve form, specialized Schwann cells, and axonal fingers projecting into the corpuscular basal lamina or connective tissue. There were at least four distinct types of corpuscular ending: Ruffini-like endings were found among dense collagen bundles, and they had a flattened nerve ending with a flattened Schwann lamella on either side. Meissner endings had an ordered stack of flattened nerve terminals with flattened Schwann cells and much basal lamina within and around the corpuscle. Simple corpuscles were single nerve endings surrounded by several layers of concentric lamellar Schwann processes. Glomerular endings were found in lamina propria papillae or encircling epithelial papillae; they were a tangle of varied neural forms each of which had apposed flattened Schwann cells, and a layer of basal lamina of varied thickness. Fibroblasts often formed incomplete partitions around Meissner and simple corpuscles.

The axoplasm of all kinds of subepithelial sensory endings contained numerous mitochondria and vesicles, as well as occasional multivesicular bodies and lysosomes; the axoplasm of all endings was pale with few microtubules and neurofilaments. The specialized lamellar Schwann cells had much pinocytotic activity. Four kinds of junctions were found between the corpuscular sensory endings and the lamellar Schwann cells: (1) symmetric densities that resemble desmosomes; (2) asymmetric densities with either the neuronal or glial membrane more dense; (3) neural membrane densities adjacent to Schwann parallel inner and outer membrane densities; and (4) sites of apparent Schwann endocytosis associated with neural blebs. The “free” sensory endings only made occasional desmosome-like junctions with their Schwann cells.

These observations are discussed in relation to possible mechanosensory transduction mechanisms, with particular attention to axoplasmic structure, axonal fingers, and neural and nonneural cell associations.  相似文献

Substance P (SP)-containing fibers in the incisive papillae of rat hard palates, which include various components of sensory receptors, i.e. mechanoreceptors, free nerve endings and chemosensory corpuscles (taste buds), were examined using immunoperoxidase techniques and light and electron microscopes. Immunolabeled fibers were consistently distributed in the medial part of the orifice of the incisive canals, i.e. in the taste-bud-enriched region. Dense immunolabeled fibers were found in subgemmal regions and in the lamina propria papillae. Some fine fibers entered and ascended the taste buds or occasionally the epithelium outside the taste buds. In addition, a rich innervation by SP-containing fibers close to blood capillaries was clearly identified. Electron microscopy revealed no specialized synaptic contact between the immunolabeled fibers and taste bud cells. Synaptic-like images could be found only between nonimmunolabeled nerve endings and the underlying taste bud cells. In the lamina propria papillae, mechanoreceptors observed in the present study contained no immunoperoxidase end products, whereas free nerve endings with an immunolabeled small-diameter axon (630-730 nm in diameter) were frequent. Similar axons were located at the adventitia of the blood capillaries. The possible functional role of SP-containing fibers in the incisive papillae was given attention.  相似文献

The present study describes a complex array of sensory nerve terminals in the human eyelid. In many respects this pattern of innervation resembles that previously described in the rhesus monkey, but in other respects it is unique to man. The most prominent nerve terminals are a complex array of lanceolate and circular Ruffini and free nerve endings that envelop the eyelashes. In addition, Merkel cells have not been conclusively identified to date in other nonhuman primate nonsinus hairs. The external root sheath collar contains Merkel cells, and dermal Merkel cells have also been identified close to the collar. The anterior cutaneous surface of the eyelid contains small vellus hairs with typical lanceolate, Ruffini, and free nerve endings resembling those of primate facial skin. Scattered Meissner and scant simple corpuscles as well as scattered free nerve endings (FNEs) can be identified on the occlusal surface of the eyelid. Intraepithelial as well as dermal FNEs were most easily identified in this region in areas lacking other corpuscular receptors. Corpuscular receptors are especially common at the occlusal/conjunctival angle. The inner or conjunctival surface of the eyelid appears to be a glandular epithelium, whereas in the rhesus monkey it is stratified squamous epithelium. This epithelium needs additional study. In summary, the present study confirms the unique sensory neural status of the human eyelid and verifies the presence of Ruffini nerve terminals by light and electron microscopy and of free nerve ending terminals at least by light microscopy, as well as a unique pattern of innervation of the human eyelash.  相似文献

The distribution and ultrastructure of sensory nerve endings were investigated in the deep lateral elbow region of the rat. Three zones of distribution of mechanoreceptors were distinguished, each in relation to the functional architecture of the connective and muscular tissue in that area: (1) a zone with muscle spindles, Golgi tendon organs, free nerve endings and single small lamellated corpuscles ('muscle-tendon spectrum'), situated in the middle third of the supinator muscle and its superficial aponeurosis; (2) a zone with small lamellated corpuscles and free nerve endings, situated pericapsularly to the humeroradial joint capsule ('shearing spectrum'): this moderately dense, irregular connective tissue is covered by the proximal continuation of the supinator's aponeurosis, and muscle fibers insert from beneath this aponeurosis, which displays, as a part of the joint capsule, a strong collagenous tissue plate; (3) a zone with only free nerve endings within the tendon-like, most proximal part of the supinator's aponeurosis, inserting into the periosteal layer of the lateral humeral epicondyle ('endotenonial spectrum'): it is part of the joint capsule. The ultrastructure of these sensory endings is described and the distribution pattern of the mechanoreceptors observed is discussed in relation to the classification into 'muscle receptors' and 'joint receptors'.  相似文献

Summary Modified branchiostegal rays 1 through 3 support the proximal end of the paired hyoid barbels in the beardfish (Beryciformes: Polymixiidae). The polymixiid barbel is unusual in that it has an unique intrinsic muscular system. Using silver impregnation and electron microscopic techniques, unencapsulated, free nerve endings were located within the tendon of the third modified branchiostegal ray. Branchiostegal rays 1 and 2 do not have any free nerve endings associated with their tendons, however. It is suggested that the free nerve endings are proprioceptors acting as stretch-sensitive mechanoreceptors, and that branchiostegal ray 3 acts as part of a sensory apparatus for monitoring the positional state of the barbel. The echidna Tachyglossus aculeatus, together with the platypus, belongs to the monotremes, a group of mammals with a number of reptilian characteristics. A structure unique to the skin of monotremes is the push rod—a compacted column of epidermal cells that is 20 μm wide and 100 μm long with its tip at the skin surface, and that is able to move relatively independently of adjacent tissue. At the base of each push rod is a cluster of encapsulated nerve endings. Push rods are common in skin of the snout and have been postulated to have a mechanosensory function. Experiments were carried out on four anesthetized echidnas with the aim of determining the function of push rods. Recordings made from the infraorbital nerve, which supplies the skin of the upper jaw, yielded responses from a total of 46 afferents. Two were electroreceptors; the others were mechanoreceptors. Within the group of mechanoreceptors with rapidly adapting responses, three responded to high-frequency vibration and resembled pacinian corpuscles. There were 26 slowly adapting (SA) mechanoreceptors, which, based on the regularity of their discharge, could be divided into two groups: SA I or Merkel type, and SA II or Ruffini type. SA I receptors had very discrete receptive fields with diameters of 100 μm. The receptive fields of two SA I receptors were marked, and after histological processing, one was seen to lie near two push rods. It is concluded that mechanoreceptor responses in the echidna's snout skin resemble those in other mammals in many aspects. We could not unequivocally associate responses to mechanical stimulation with the push rods.  相似文献

Nerve terminals from the head ganglia of Locusta migratoria were isolated by means of a modified microscale flotation technique. Enzymatic, ultrastructural and chemical analysis revealed that the synaptosomal fraction was highly enriched in well-preserved nerve endings containing almost no free mitochondria. Cholinergic activities (choline acetyltransferase, acetylcholinesterase, acetylcholine receptors) were found to be concentrated in the synaptosomal fraction. The cholinergic nature and the functional integrity of nerve endings isolated from locusts were further supported by the existence of a high affinity choline uptake system, which is abolished by hemicholinium-3 as well as by low temperature, is essentially sodium dependent and inhibited by elevated potassium concentrations. After slight modifications of the gradient densities, synaptosomes could also be isolated from other insect species.  相似文献

The endodermal nerve nets of the scyphozoan jellyfish Phacellophora camtschatica and Cyanea capillata were stained with methylene blue. Small animals (3–7.5 cm in diameter) stained easily. The endodermal nerve net of both species is a synaptic net consisting of bipolar and some few tripolar nerve cells with unbranched neurites. The neurites terminate on other neurites. Very few free nerve endings were observed. The neurites have a diameter of 1/4-1/2 μ and there is no indication of the presence of neurites too fine to be followed in the light microscope. The gross appearance of the net changes with the size of the medusa. Staining 15–53 cm diameter animals showed that the nerve cells increase in size with the size of the animals, that the density of the nerve net decreases. The endodermal nerve net is very similar to our interpretation of the Diffuse Nerve Net of the ectoderm but without the typical primary sense cells. In both cases the appearance of branching neurites is interpreted as an artifact caused by neurites terminating on other neurites.  相似文献

The structural features of sinus hair follicles in Sorex unguiculatus were studied by macroscopic dissection, serial section light microscopy and electron microscopy. The shrew has about 540 sinus hairs regularly arranged on the snout. The maxillary nerves innervating them are extremely thick, while the optic nerves are very thin. Thus the follicle must be one of the most important sense organs in this animal. In the follicle the ring sinus is well-developed and the trabeculae of the cavernous sinus are reduced in number and thickness. The ring bulge is not a unified structure but a pair of bodies which consist of head, stalk and attachment plaque. It is characterized by the presence of numberous thick collagen fibrils (400 nm) and appears to be mechanically rigid. Lanceolate nerve terminals, free endings, Merkel cells with nerve terminals and unmyelinated fibers are observed, but encapsulated endings are lacking in and around the follicles. Straight lanceolate terminals on the posterior side of the follicle are thick and three-sided in cross section, while those on the anterior side are thin and two-sided. Free endings are located on the anterior side of the follicle. These and other findings are discussed on the basis of the assumption that the Sorex sinus hair follicle is more specialized as a vibrating system than in other mammals.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of sensory nerve endings was examined in joint capsules of large limb joints in three adult frogs (Rana temporaria). The joint receptors are represented by the only one kind of sensory nerve endings--by free nerve endings. The unmyelinized preterminal desintegrates into single terminals. This branching is bound on the most peripheral cell of the Schwann cell by means of mesaxons, they pass from the pericaryum of the Schwann cell peripherally. The branches of the nerve terminal are surrounded by a cover of 1...3 cytoplasmatic processes of the Schwann cell. The surface lamella is covered by a distinct basal membrane. Bundles of collagenous fibrils pass along the branches of the nerve terminal. Quite naked nerve endings were not observed. The axoplasma of the nerve terminal contains strikingly few cell organels. Besides axially passing neurofilaments and neurotubules only sporadic mitochondria and clear vesicles were observed. The accumulation of mitochondria, characteristic for the axoplasma of nerve terminals, was observed in no case. Free nerve endings which were found in the joint capsules of the frog belong among so called "free penicillate nerve endings".  相似文献

Studies of axon potentials set up by pressure stimuli applied to single cutaneous receptors in frog''s skin indicate that the mechanical stimulus excites the free nerve endings directly. Adaptation to constant pressures or to intermittently applied pressures (failure of the response) may be due to the reduction of excitability of the nerve endings by potassium released under the pressure from surrounding epithelial cells.  相似文献

Leaf architectural pattern has been studied in 27 genera and 35 species of the Acanthaceae. The major venation pattern conforms to pinnate camptodromous with eucamptodromous or festooned brochidodromous secondaries, pinnate craspedodromous inAcanthus ilicifolius and acrodromous inLepidagathis trinervis. Intersecondary veins are common. The marginal ultimate venation is looped. The areoles are variable in size. The vein endings are usually simple, linear or cuved or divide once or twice dichotomously. Isolated vein endings, tracheids, isolated free vein endings and extension cells are observed. Transfusion tracheids are seen inDicliptera verticillata. Oxygen consumption in mitochondria and nerve endings isolated from rat cerebral cortex was studied after the administration of the convulsant 3-mercaptopropionic acid. It was found that the respiratory rate of these fractions was higher than in the controls; the increases were observed only in the presence of exogenous substrate. On the other hand no changes were found in slices or when the drug was added “in vitro”. The possible interpretation of this effect by 3-mercaptopropionic acid is discussed.  相似文献

Nematode amphids are a pair of lateral cephalic sense organs, each comprising a group of sensory endings terminating in a cuticle-lined pit. In Syngamus trachea, a parasite of birds, each amphid is surrounded by two non-nervous supporting elements, a large gland cell basally and a smaller supporting cell anteriorly. The amphidial glands display high levels of secretory activity from five to six days postinfection. Secretory material is discharged through the lumen of the sense organ onto host tissue. The ultrastructure of amphids and amphidial glands has been investigated in newly moulted, immature and mature adults to trace the development of glandular activity and its effect on amphid-amphidial gland relationships. In newly moulted adults, the glands have very low levels of secretory activity and appear to act only as supporting cells to the amphids. As secretory activity increases, the gland cell membrane surrounding the sensory endings is elaborated into a reticulum which probably forms the secretory surface. In mature adults the amphid pit is swollen and filled with secretion; the sensory endings are relegated to the periphery of the lumen. It is suggested that amphidial glands develop from typical supporting cells, but acquire a new role possibly associated with parasite attachment.  相似文献

A skeletal neomorph – the preglossale – is described from the tip of the tongue in Passer. This medial unpaired skeletal element is a dorsally open trough articulating with the anterior tips of the paraglossalia and supporting the heavy epidermal pad of the seed-cup. The large paired Mm. hypoglossus anterior originate from the posterior half of the preglossale and insert onto the anterior bodies of the paired paraglossalia; they serve to depress the anterior portion of the preglossale. A regular pattern of dermal papillae is present in the seed-cup; these are arranged in about 20 rows of six to 8 papillae per row. Each papilla contains a series of Merkel cells and associated nerve endings (touch receptors). The seed-cup serves to orient and hold the seed in place while it is being husked; the battery of tactile receptors provides information on the position of the seed on the tongue. The preglossale serves to support the seed-cup and to change its shape – the curvature of the dorsal surface – as it is depressed relative to the paraglossalia. The paraglossale and associated features of the seed-cup in Passer would provide a valuable preparation to study a diversity of problems such as developmental interactions between endomesodermal and ecto-mesenchymal skeletal features, the ontogenetical development of Merkel cells, and the sensory physiology of Merkel cells and their associated nerve endings as tactile corpuscles.  相似文献

Available fragmentary data on tactile sensie of fish are summed up for the first time. Data are presented on morphology and distribution of tactile receptors (free nerve endings, Merkel cells, Rohon-Beard cells, etc.) and on their innervation. Main tactile organs of fish are considered—barbels and various other cutaneous outgrowths, free rays of fins, rostrum, breeding tubercles, dermal teeth. Information is presented on functional parameters of tactile reception and its significance in orientation and in manifestation by fish of reproductive, defensive, social, exploratory, and food searching behavior. An important role is shown of the intraoral tactile reception in estimation by fish of texture and attractiveness of food objects. Time of formation of tactile sensitivity in fish ontogenesis is indicated and dynamics of its formation is analyzed. A low level of knowledge of structure and function of the tactile system is noted. The majority of the available data are mostly facts indicating the importance of tactile sense in various life manifestations of fish but not disclosing the functional potential of the system.  相似文献

Five types of sensory receptors are described. Both uniciliated and multiciliated nerve endings occur on the apical papilla. The former structures possibly have a tango- or rheo-receptive function, while the latter may have a chemoreceptive function. A number of uniciliated sensory structures are also present embedded within the intercellular ridges. A pair of unciliated lateral papillae are located in the intercellular ridge separating the first and second tiers of epidermal cells. Each is associated with a number of sheathed unciliate nerve bulbs. A pair of internal “lamellate ciliary organs” are ascribed a photoreceptive function. Each comprises a cylindrical cell body enclosing a large cavity, into which project eight or more cilia bearing a number of concentrically arranged spherical lamellae. A single unicellular “conical organ”, covered with microvilli, projects into an extracellular space, bounded in part by the lateral glands. This structure may represent a second type of photoreceptor, or alternatively may serve as a gyroscopic device.  相似文献

The earthworm somatic muscle contains myoneural synapses forming clusters of “synaptic buttons” in which the proteins syntaxin 1, synaptotagmin 1, and alpha 1B subunit of the Ca2+ channel of the N-type were identified. It is supposed that “synaptic buttons” contain a limited number of active zones, which is due to their small size (1–2 μm) and the pattern of distribution of proteins of the exoendocytotic cycle. The postsynaptic membrane of cholinergic synapses contains nicotinic acetylcholine receptors able to bind alpha-bungarotoxin. The area of the position of receptors on postsynaptic membrane is strongly restricted to the synaptic contact region.  相似文献

Transforming growth factors (TGFs) are growth-promoting polypeptides that cause phenotypic transformation and anchorage-independent growth of normal cells. They have been isolated from several human and animal carcinoma and sarcoma cells. One TGF is sarcoma growth factor (SGF) which is released hy murine sarcoma virus-transformed cells. The TGFs interact with epidermal growth factor (EGF) cell membrane receptors. TGFs are not detectable in culture fluids from cells which contain high numbers of free EGF cell membrane receptors. SGF acts as a tumor promoter in cell culture systems and its effect on the transformed phenotype is blocked by retinoids (vitamin A and synthetic analogs). The production of TGFs by transformed cells and the responses of normal cells to the addition of TGFs to the culture medium raise the possibility that cells “autostimulate” their own growth by releasing factors that rebind at the cell surface. The term “autocrine secretion” has been proposed for this type of situation where a cell secretes a hormone-like substance for which it has external cell membrane receptors. The autocrine concept may provide a partial explanation for some aspects of tumor cell progression.  相似文献
