The ‘thymidine suicide’technique for indicating differences in the proliferation rate of early haemopoietic progenitor cells (spleen colony forming and agar colony forming cells) in C57BL mice has been evaluated. Special care was taken to use the same bone marrow cell suspension for the two progenitor cell assays. Both the in vivo and the in vitro techniques were employed. Following 3H-TdR in vivo, about 20% of both types of progenitor cell are killed in normal mice; however, after incubation in vitro with 3H-TdR, 35% of agar colony forming cells but only 4% of spleen colony forming cells are killed. Reasons for the difference between the in vivo and the in vitro results are discussed. With bone marrow from continuously irradiated animals, the thymidine suicide for both agar colony forming and spleen colony forming cells is in the range 42–50%, and there is no difference between in vivo and in vitro suicide. The in vivo results support the conclusion, based on the effect of proliferation dependent cytotoxic agents, that in C57BL mice agar colony forming and spleen colony forming cells are proliferating at the same rate in normal animals, and are speeded up to the same extent by continuous γ-irradiation. It is considered that in normal C57BL mice the in vitro method does not give a correct estimate of the proliferation rate of these progenitor cells. It would seem that the similarity in the proliferation rate of agar colony forming and spleen colony forming cells in C57BL mice is not true for other strains of mice: indeed using normal CBA and in vivo suicide, we have shown a significantly greater thymidine suicide for agar colony forming cells compared to spleen colony forming cells.  相似文献

The quantitative efficiency of the spleen colony assay in mice is discussed in the light of recent findings on the kinetics of colony forming cells. Arguments are presented showing that the f factor, the 2 hr CFU recovery fraction in the spleen, markedly over-estimates the assay efficiency which is the ratio of the numbers of colony forming units and colony forming cells.  相似文献

Changes in colony size (cell number per colony) of Asterionella Formosa Hass. were experimentally evaluated in relation to water temperature using two types of clones having colony sizes of four or eight cells. The clones were isolated from two different temperate freshwater lakes. Both clones showed the same general trend with changing temperature. Most of the colonies were normal in size at low temperatures, but colony size was twice as large at high temperatures. Variable colony sizes were present at low percentages. Colony separation occurred at the oldest connection within the colony after cell division. Culture experiments showed that the rates of specific growth and colony separation were balanced except for a rather short period of time when the temperature was changed. Optical and scanning electron micrography did not show any distinctive morphological structure at the point of connection except for porelli and mucilage pads. Seasonal changes in colony size of A. formosa observed in a freshwater lake are discussed based on these temperature results.  相似文献

Summary While a number of advantages may result from group living, it may also lead to increased levels of attack by parasites because groups may be easier to find. This leads to the prediction that levels of parasitism should increase with colony size. We test this prediction by comparing colony size and parasitoid load for two species of colonial orb-weaving spiders from Mexico, Metepeira (undesc. sp., tentatively named atascadero) and Metepeira incrassata, which exhibit contrasting levels of social organization and utilize different habitats. For M. atascadero, which occurs solitarily or in small groups in desert/mesquite grassland habitat, rates of egg-sac parasitism fluctuate widely from year to year, and are closely tied to spider egg output. There is no relationship between colony size and rate of parasitism. For colonial M. incrassata, which occur in tropical rain forest/agricultural habitat, rates of parasitism are relatively constant from year to year. However, there is a positive relationship between colony size and rate of parasitism in this species. These differences are discussed with regard to the stability of the two habitats, prey availability, and the foraging behavior of the respective parasitoids.  相似文献

The seabird tick Ixodes uriae (White) is common in subantarctic areas and is likely to be a vector of pathogenic agents. This paper reports on the prevalence of tick-infested adult king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) and on antibodies to the Lyme disease agent (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato) in adult and chick penguins. Fifteen percent of the adults of the colony studied were tick infested. B. burgdorferi antibodies were detected in 14% of tick-infested adults' and in 6% of chicks' sera. The percentage of tick-infested adults differed significantly according to location in the colony, the highest density occurring on the upper slopes of the colony. The potential role of king penguins as B. burgdorferi reservoirs and the effect of this agent on king penguin populations remain unknown. The consequences for human health are discussed. There are several apparent developmental stages in the life cycle of Nostoc sphaeroides Kützing, an edible cyanobacterium found mainly in paddy fields in central China. The cytochemical changes in developmental stages such as hormogonia, aseriate stage, filamentous stage and colony in N. sphaeroides were examined using fluorescent staining and colorimetric methods. The staining of acidic and sulfated polysaccharides increased with development when hormogonia were used as the starting point. Acidic polysaccharides (AP) were most abundant at the aseriate stage and then decreased, while the sulfated polysaccharides (SP) were highest at the colony stage. Quantitatively, along the developmental process from hormogonia to colony, total carbohydrates first increased, then became stable, and then reached their highest level at the colony stage, while reducing sugars were highest at the hormogonia stage and then decreased sharply once development began. SP were not detectable in the hot water soluble polysaccharides (HWSP), and hormogonia had the lowest content of AP, while old colonies had the highest. The AP content of the aseriate stage, filamentous stage and young colony stage were very similar. The evolutionary relationships reflected in the developmental stages of N. sphaeroides are discussed.  相似文献

Normal biometric ranges for fetal growth in a captive breeding baboon (Papio hamadryas) colony are described. Measurements include crown-rump length, biparietal diameter, binocular distance, head circumference, abdominal circumference, femur length and amniotic fluid index. The pattern of fetal growth is compared with other baboon subspecies and man. The uses and limitations of such data for breeding colony management and optimum utilisation of experimentally derived data are discussed.  相似文献

1. Bumble bees exhibit worker size polymorphisms; highly related workers within a colony may vary up to 10‐fold in body mass. As size variation is an important life history feature in bumble bees, the distribution of body sizes within the colony and how it fluctuates over the colony cycle were analysed. 2. Ten commercially purchased colonies of Bombus impatiens (Cresson) were reared in ad libitum conditions. The size of all workers present and newly emerging workers (callows) was recorded each week. 3. The average size of bumble bee workers did not change with colony age, but variation in body size tended to decrease over time. The average size of callows did not change with population size, but did tend to decrease with colony age. In all measures, there was considerable variation among colonies. 4. Colonies of B. impatiens usually produced workers with normally distributed body sizes throughout the colony life cycle. Unlike most polymorphic ants, there was no increase in worker body size with colony age or colony size. This provides the first, quantitative data on the ontogeny of bumble bee worker size distribution. The potential adaptive significance of this size variation is discussed.  相似文献

Summary In the ant Camponotus mus the eclosion of imagines from the cocoons was shown to be controlled by nurse workers, which broke the cocoons and assisted the callows to energe. Short-term colony prey deprivation modified the eclosion-help behavior resulting in a delay in cocoon opening times. During long-term prey deprivation, no new cocoons were spun; the starved larvae grew and pupated when prey was again available. These findings as a colony strategy adapted to the changing condition of prey availabitity in a temperate habitat are discussed.  相似文献

Since 1972 we have maintained a colony of parthenogenetic Cnemidophorus exsanguis, which has reached the seventh generation in our laboratory. This paper reports improved husbandry techniques that allow maintenance of healthy, reproducing colonies of this and additional species of Cnemidophorus. In addition, aspects of the physiology of calcium regulation and metabolic bone disease are discussed in relation to the captive rearing of lizards through many generations.  相似文献

Induction of the luminescence system of the marine luminous bacteriumVibrio harveyi growing on a solid medium was studied. The induction occurred when the total number of cells per square centimeter of solid medium approached 104 cells (i.e., either 100 colonies consisting of 100 cells per each colony or 1 colony with about 104 cells). The preinduction period and number of cells per colony at the time of induction decreased as the number of colonies per cm2 increased. The ecological significance of the induction of the luminescence system on solid medium is discussed.  相似文献

A colony of the leaf-cutting Attine (Atta cephalotes isthmicola) ants was cultured and observed in the laboratory. During the 114 month life of the colony, a maximum garden volume of 54 L. was attained. The colony used a total of 139,902 g of substrate at a maximum rate of 2,660 g per month and occupied one hundred forty-four 1.25 L. chambers. Observations on the colony ranged from behavior of the castes to biochemistry and the absence of cholesterol. The dramatic display quality of Attine colonies for zoological exhibit is discussed.  相似文献

The dwarf honey bees Apis florea and A. andreniformis are sympatric in southeast Asia. We translocated eight A. florea colonies and four A. andreniformis colonies to an orchard near Sai Yoke, Thailand. After 2 days, we dequeened half of the colonies. Microsatellite genotyping showed that a queenless A. florea colony merged with a queenright A. florea colony, and a queenless A. andreniformis colony merged with a queenright A. florea colony. The inter-specific merger in particular shows that colonies can combine without direct kin benefits, and that colony mergers probably arise through strong queen attraction.  相似文献

An individual ambush predation is used by huntresses of the ponerine ant Ectatomma ruidum to capture halictid bees (Lasioglossum umbripenne) in the Panamanian mountains. Workers, which use this strategy and originated from a colony (A) situated within a nest aggregation of halictid bees, capture almost four times more prey than colony (B) with a foraging area which does not include this type of bee's nest. Forty-eight percent of the prey of colony (A) are halictid bees, demonstrating the local importance of this predatory strategy in E. ruidum. A close examination of the behavioral sequence of predation shows that ambush is successful in only 4.8% of cases, a very low success rate in comparison to other predatory strategies described in this species. Nevertheless, due to the high repetition (16.1 ± 5.9 times on average) of very short waiting phases (6.3 ± 1.9 s), the true success rate (i.e., according to the number of individual trips) can reach up to 80%. A review of ambush predation among ant species allows us to distinguish approaches between jumping, long stealth approaches, and true ambushes. Implications of learning and expectation processes are also discussed.  相似文献

The breeding ecology of the New World race of the Royal Tern Sterna maxima maxima was studied at colonies in Virginia and North Carolina, U.S.A., from 1967 to 1970. Colony sites are quite varied, but isolation, good distance visibility and (especially) freedom from quadruped predators seem important if not essential prerequisites. In Virginia, most adults arrive at the colony site in the last few days of March. Courtship, displaying and copulation take place at, near, and some distance from the colony site. In this the Royal Tern differs from its near relative S. sandvicensis sandvicensis which carries out these activities away from the colony site, presumably as an anti-predator device. Courtship displays are not described, but in their essentials are similar to those of other terns. Copulations continue throughout incubation and gradually disappear when the eggs hatch. No post-copulatory displays are known. Some synchrony of egg-laying is evident, but no “mass laying” occurs, the colony increasing in size steadily over a period of weeks and months. Defaecation on the nest is normal and probably serves to strengthen the nest rim against flooding by high tides. Contrary to published reports, the normal clutch is one; the largest is two, probably often from two different females. All incubating adults examined had two brood patches. Average egg measurements are 63 × 44-5 mm, and average egg weight is 64.3 g. Egg colour varies greatly, and evaluation is difficult. Eggs are probably not cryptically coloured and individual variation, as well as nest-site, are used by returning adults to identify their own eggs. Average maximum nest density is c. 7/m2. Sterna sandvicensis acuflavida nests regularly, if not obligatorily, with m. maxima; interactions between the two, and possible benefits accruing to each, are discussed. Unhatched eggs were significantly nearer other nests than were successfully hatched eggs, and possible explanations are given. Incubation lasts about 30–31 days, a week longer than in most terns; both sexes incubate. Broken eggshells are never removed by the adults. Instead, after 2–3 days, the chicks leave the nest permanently to join a creche that roams freely about the immediate vicinity of the colony. Chicks remain in the creche for about 25–30 days, leaving it at fledging, approximately 30 days after hatching. While in the creche, chicks are normally fed only by their parents, who probably recognise them both vocally and visually, using the extensive variation in voice and colour of chicks characteristic of the species. Sandvicensis acuflavida chicks also are highly variable, and join Royal creches, adults of both species attending. Variation also occurs in Royals' juvenal plumage, and seems associated with extended parental care. Feeding adults normally wander up to 40 km from their colony, and this probably facilitates the intercolonial exchange of breeding birds we recorded. They feed inshore, in shallow waters, taking small fish by dives which do not go below the surface. They regularly take small soft-shell crabs in this way, and frequently water-skim like skimmers Rynchops spp., sometimes capturing food while doing so. A relationship between crab capture and water-skimming is established for the first time, and water-skimming in non-feeding contexts is mentioned. Besides the quadruped predators which they normally avoid by fleeing the colony site, Royals have no known predators beyond the egg stage. Eggs, although not chicks, are readily taken by Laughing Gulls. Relationships between the two species are discussed, emphasising their constant association the year round.  相似文献

The position of the cleavage furrow (random or otherwise) was studied on cultured L-929 (NCTC, clone 929) and CHO cells. CHO cells were seeded uniformly on the surface of Petri dishes; L-929 cells were grown as colonies so that migrating cells could be watched. Cell behavior was registered by time-lapse imaging. Two parameters were analyzed on captured images: the angle between the cell polarization axis and cleavage furrow and the angle between the cell polarization axis or cleavage furrow and the horizontal axis of the image field. It was shown that the position of CHO cells in the dish plane and the value of the angle between the cell polarization axis and the cleavage furrow were random. The L-929 cells migrating from the colony were orientated such that their polarization axis was directed to the colony center and the cleavage furrow was perpendicular to this axis. The nonrandom position of cultivated cells during mitosis and their cleavage furrow during the telophase are discussed.  相似文献

Red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta, possess stridulatory organs and stridulate in a variety of contexts. We used a stethoscope mounted microphone to study stridulation at the colony level in the context of emigration, disturbance, and excavation. In conjunction with preliminary observations of nest and foraging activities, our results suggest stridulation serves multiple functions in S. invicta. Stridulation was not significantly increased in colonies during responses to disturbance, and only marginally during colony emigration. Colonies involved in excavation, however, exhibited a significant increase in stridulatory activity. Four possible explanations for the function of stridulation in this context are discussed in relation to the stridulatory behavior of individuals, solitary wasps, and published literature on formicid stridulation.  相似文献

Adult Lesser Black‐backed Gulls Larus fuscus were followed during the breeding season using a high‐resolution GPS tracking system. Little is known about the foraging movements of these birds and what they do when they are away from the colony. The study revealed intriguing yet infrequent behavioural patterns showing that birds would sit on the sea surface drifting passively with the tidal current for several hours, resting at sea rather than in the breeding colony. The potential function of the observed patterns is discussed as well as the relevance of these observations to other species.  相似文献
