In recent years nuclear magnetic resonance (n.m.r.) has become a means of providing excellent images of the interior of the human body which are proving useful in medical practice. The development of n.m.r. imaging, much of which was pioneered in Britain, is outlined. Proton image resolution of human anatomy is comparable with X-ray computed tomography images, but without the hazard of ionizing radiation. There is improved soft tissue discrimination and pathological contrast through the basic imaging parameters of the proton density and the relaxation times T1 and T2, whose differences from one tissue to another are exploited by use of appropriate radiofrequency pulse sequences. Images may be obtained directly of transverse, coronal and sagittal sections of the head and body. Single slices or multiple slices may be imaged and imaging may be done in three dimensions. The lecture describes the more important imaging techniques and gives illustrative examples of images obtained. The efficient use of time in n.m.r. imaging is discussed, particularly mentioning the multiecho-multislice procedure and the development of real-time n.m.r. imaging. Magnetic field strengths in current use for proton n.m.r. imaging range from 0.02 to 2 T. At the lower end of the range resistive magnets are used, while for higher fields superconducting magnets are needed. A considerable improvement in image quality is obtained by use of special receiver coils.  相似文献

Introduction

The purpose of this paper is to develop an easy method to generate both fat signal and banding artifact free 3D balanced Steady State Free Precession (bSSFP) images at high magnetic field.

Methods

In order to suppress fat signal and bSSFP banding artifacts, two or four images were acquired with the excitation frequency of the water-selective binomial radiofrequency pulse set On Resonance or shifted by a maximum of 3/4TR. Mice and human volunteers were imaged at 7T and 3T, respectively to perform whole-body and musculoskeletal imaging. “Sum-Of-Square” reconstruction was performed and combined or not with parallel imaging.

Results

The frequency selectivity of 1-2-3-2-1 or 1-3-3-1 binomial pulses was preserved after (3/4TR) frequency shifting. Consequently, whole body small animal 3D imaging was performed at 7T and enabled visualization of small structures within adipose tissue like lymph nodes. In parallel, this method allowed 3D musculoskeletal imaging in humans with high spatial resolution at 3T. The combination with parallel imaging allowed the acquisition of knee images with ~500μm resolution images in less than 2min. In addition, ankles, full head coverage and legs of volunteers were imaged, demonstrating the possible application of the method also for large FOV.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this robust method can be applied in small animals and humans at high magnetic fields. The high SNR and tissue contrast obtained in short acquisition times allows to prescribe bSSFP sequence for several preclinical and clinical applications.  相似文献

Applications of nuclear magnetic resonance (n.m.r.) zeugmatographic imaging to medical diagnosis and to medical, physiological, and biological research require the development of appropriate imaging instrumentation and ancillary techniques, as well as an understanding of the biological significance of the imaging results. A whole body imaging system, relying primarily upon reconstruction from projections, is under development in the expectation that the reconstruction approach will be the most practical one for many purposes. In addition, injectable magnetic reagents that can selectively change tissue water relaxation times and image contrast are under development so as to increase the specificity and versatility of the measurements. If very high magnetic fields are employed, 31P n.m.r. zeugmatography may be practical at very low resolution for human diagnostic studies and for experiments on perfused organs and small animals. Preliminary images, showing the spatial distributions of different phosphorus metabolites in the compartments of test objects, have been obtained at 146 MHz by reconstruction techniques.  相似文献

Internal images of structured objects may be obtained with n.m.r. by labelling component parts with different magnetic field strengths and therefore recognizably different n.m.r. frequencies. A linear field gradient generates a one-dimensional projection of nuclear density and a variety of techniques are employed to manipulate this one-dimensional probe to yield internal images in two and three dimensions. In the past few years, n.m.r. imaging, sometimes also called zeugmatography or spin mapping, has been applied progressively to provide proton images of small phantoms, fruit, vegetables and small animals, and finally to in vivo imaging of the human body; it promises to provide a valuable means of interior investigation of intact biological systems generally. For medical imaging the method is non-invasive, does not use ionizing radiations, appears to be without hazard and penetrates bony cavities without attenuation. Furthermore, other n.m.r. parameters, for example, relaxation times and fluid flow, may also be mapped; there is evidence that the relaxation times from tumours are significantly longer than those from corresponding normal tissue. Effort to date has mostly been concentrated on proton n.m.r., but some work has been done with other nuclei. Three examples are shown of n.m.r. images of intact biological systems: a fruit, an animal and a human system. The discussion includes the quantitative nature of the images, tissue discrimination, the relation between the resolution in the image and image acquisition time, attenuation and phase shift of the r.f. field in the biological tissue, and magnets suitable for n.m.r. imaging. In principle, all conventional n.m.r. techniques can be combined with n.m.r. methods in order to investigate heterogeneous systems. Overhauser imaging is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Under magnetic resonance (MR) guidance, high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is capable of precise and accurate delivery of thermal dose to tissues. Given the excellent soft tissue imaging capabilities of MRI, but the lack of data on the correlation of MRI findings to histology following HIFU, we sought to examine tumor response to HIFU ablation to determine whether there was a correlation between histological findings and common MR imaging protocols in the assessment of the extent of thermal damage. Female FVB mice (n = 34), bearing bilateral neu deletion tumors, were unilaterally insonated under MR guidance, with the contralateral tumor as a control. Between one and five spots (focal size 0.5 × 0.5 × 2.5 mm3) were insonated per tumor with each spot receiving approximately 74.2 J of acoustic energy over a period of 7 seconds. Animals were then imaged on a 7T MR scanner with several protocols. T1 weighted images (with and without gadolinium contrast) were collected in addition to a series of T2 weighted and diffusion weighted images (for later reconstruction into T2 and apparent diffusion coefficient maps), immediately following ablation and at 6, 24, and 48 hours post treatment. Animals were sacrificed at each time point and both insonated/treated and contralateral tumors removed and stained for NADH-diaphorase, caspase 3, or with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). We found the area of non-enhancement on contrast enhanced T1 weighted imaging immediately post ablation correlated with the region of tissue receiving a thermal dose CEM43 ≥ 240 min. Moreover, while both tumor T2 and apparent diffusion coefficient values changed from pre-ablation values, contrast enhanced T1 weighted images appeared to be more senstive to changes in tissue viability following HIFU ablation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is an application of scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) algorithm to stitch the cervical-thoracic-lumbar (C-T-L) spine magnetic resonance (MR) images to provide a view of the entire spine in a single image. All MR images were acquired with fast spin echo (FSE) pulse sequence using two MR scanners (1.5 T and 3.0 T). The stitching procedures for each part of spine MR image were performed and implemented on a graphic user interface (GUI) configuration. Moreover, the stitching process is performed in two categories; manual point-to-point (mPTP) selection that performed by user specified corresponding matching points, and automated point-to-point (aPTP) selection that performed by SIFT algorithm. The stitched images using SIFT algorithm showed fine registered results and quantitatively acquired values also indicated little errors compared with commercially mounted stitching algorithm in MRI systems. Our study presented a preliminary validation of the SIFT algorithm application to MRI spine images, and the results indicated that the proposed approach can be performed well for the improvement of diagnosis. We believe that our approach can be helpful for the clinical application and extension of other medical imaging modalities for image stitching.  相似文献

A single abdominal cross-sectional computerized axial tomography and magnetic resonance image is often obtained in studies examining adipose tissue (AT) distribution. An abdominal image might also provide additional useful information on total body skeletal muscle (SM) and AT volumes with related physiological insights. We therefore investigated the relationships between abdominal SM and AT areas from single images and total body component volumes in a large and diverse sample of healthy adult subjects. Total body SM and AT volumes were derived by whole body multislice magnetic resonance imaging in 123 men [age (mean +/- SD) of 41.6 +/- 15.8 yr; body mass index of 25.9 +/- 3.4 kg/m(2)] and 205 women (age of 47.8 +/- 18.7 yr; body mass index of 26.7 +/- 5.6 kg/m(2)). Single abdominal SM and AT slice areas were highly correlated with total body SM (r = 0.71-0.92; r = 0.90 at L(4)-L(5) intervertebral space) and AT (r = 0.84-0.96; r = 0.94 at L(4)-L(5) intervertebral space) volumes, respectively. R(2) increased by only 5.7-6.1% for SM and 2.7-4.4% for AT with the inclusion of subject sex, age, ethnicity, scanning position, body mass index, and waist circumference in the model. The developed SM and AT models were validated in an additional 49 subjects. To achieve equivalent power to a study measuring total body SM or AT volumes, a study using a single abdominal image would require 17-24% more subjects for SM and 6-12% more subjects for AT. Measurement of a single abdominal image can thus provide estimates of total body SM and AT for group studies of healthy adults.  相似文献

Stem cell transplantation has been expected to have various applications for regenerative medicine. However, in order to detect and trace the transplanted stem cells in the body, non-invasive and widely clinically available cell imaging technologies are required. In this paper, we focused on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technology, and investigated whether the trimethylamino dextran-coated magnetic iron oxide nanoparticle -03 (TMADM-03), which was newly developed by our group, could be used for labeling adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ASCs) as a contrast agent. No cytotoxicity was observed in ASCs transduced with less than 100 µg-Fe/mL of TMADM-03 after a one hour transduction time. The transduction efficiency of TMADM-03 into ASCs was about four-fold more efficient than that of the alkali-treated dextran-coated magnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (ATDM), which is a major component of commercially available contrast agents such as ferucarbotran (Resovist), and the level of labeling was maintained for at least two weeks. In addition, the differentiation ability of ASCs labeled with TMADM-03 and their ability to produce cytokines such as hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), were confirmed to be maintained. The ASCs labeled with TMADM-03 were transplanted into the left kidney capsule of a mouse. The labeled ASCs could be imaged with good contrast using a 1T MR imaging system. These data suggest that TMADM-03 can therefore be utilized as a contrast agent for the MR imaging of stem cells.  相似文献

The magnetic resonance images and maps of bovine ovaries acquired at defined phases of follicular development and regression were studied to determine whether magnetic resonance image attributes of the follicular antrum reflect the physiological status of dominant and subordinate ovarian follicles. Ovariectomies were performed at day 3 of wave one, day 6 of wave one, day 1 of wave two and at >/= day 17 after ovulation. The timings of ovariectomies were selected to acquire growing, early static, late static and regressing follicles of the first wave and preovulatory follicles of the ovulatory wave. Pre-selection and subordinate follicles were also available for analysis. Serum samples were taken on the day of ovariectomy and follicular fluid samples were taken after imaging. Numerical pixel value and pixel heterogeneity in a spot representing approximately 95% of the follicular antrum were quantified in T(1)- and T(2)-weighted images. T(1) and T(2) relaxation rates (T(1) and T(2)), proton density, apparent diffusion coefficients and their heterogeneities were determined from the computed magnetic resonance maps. The antra of early atretic dominant follicles showed higher T(2)-weighted mean pixel value (P < 0.008) and heterogeneity (P < 0. 01) and lower T(2) heterogeneity (P < 0.008) than growing follicles. Subordinate follicles in the presence of a preovulatory dominant follicle had higher T(1), T(1) heterogeneity, proton density, proton density heterogeneity, and lower mean pixel value in T(1)-weighted images than subordinate follicles of the anovulatory wave (P < 0.04). T(1) relaxation rate heterogeneity and proton density heterogeneity were positively correlated with follicular fluid oestradiol concentration (r = 0.4 and 0.3; P < 0.04). T(2) relaxation rate heterogeneity was positively correlated with follicular fluid progesterone concentration (r = 0.4; P < 0.008). Quantitative differences in magnetic resonance image attributes of the antrum observed among phases of follicular development and regression coincided with changes in the ability of the dominant follicle to produce steroid hormones and ovulate, and thus were indicative of physiological status and follicular health.  相似文献

The objective of the current study was to determine whether magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could be successfully utilized to document the effect of an oestrogenic anabolic agent on pituitary gland growth. The experimental animals consisted of two 1/2 sibling Suffolk wethers (castrated rams), which received either no implant (control, n = 1) or a 24 mg zeranol implant at day 0 and day 42 (zeranol; n = 1). Animals were anaesthetized with propofol and supported with oxygen during the MRI procedure. A mobile MRI unit with a 0.5 tesla (T), superconducting magnet was used to obtain 3 mm thick, non-contrast enhanced, T1-weighted (TR 500-600, TE25) sagittal, transverse and dorsal images of the pituitary gland. Sagittal images were recorded only when the mesencephalic aqueduct and infundibulum were distinctly visible in the same image. Pituitary glands were imaged at 14-day intervals for 70 days to determine if and when the anabolic effects of zeranol on pituitary gland growth could be visualized using MRI techniques. Three separate measurements of the pituitary gland dimensions made with the on-screen cursor were averaged to calculate pituitary gland dimensions and volume. A computer-assisted image analysis system and laser film images were used to determine pituitary gland area. Increases in pituitary gland volume for control and zeranol-treated animals were evident within 14 days, and by the end of the 70-day study, the increase in pituitary volume for the zeranol-treated animal was three times greater than that of the control animal. Overall, our results indicate that MRI technology can be successfully used to document the development of the pituitary gland in vivo. Application of knowledge gained from this novel approach to study the growth, development and function of endocrine glands over time, and within the same animal, will enhance human and animal endocrine diagnostic procedures.  相似文献

We magnetically imaged the magnetic action field and optically imaged the transmembrane potentials generated by planar wavefronts on the surface of the left ventricular wall of Langendorff-perfused isolated rabbit hearts. The magnetic action field images were used to produce a time series of two-dimensional action current maps. Overlaying epifluorescent images allowed us to identify a net current along the wavefront and perpendicular to gradients in the transmembrane potential. This is in contrast to a traditional uniform double-layer model where the net current flows along the gradient in the transmembrane potential. Our findings are supported by numerical simulations that treat cardiac tissue as a bidomain with unequal anisotropies in the intra- and extracellular spaces. Our measurements reveal the anisotropic bidomain nature of cardiac tissue during plane wave propagation. These bidomain effects play an important role in the generation of the whole-heart magnetocardiogram and cannot be ignored.  相似文献

Small unmanned aircraft systems (sUASs) are fostering novel approaches to marine mammal research, including baleen whale photogrammetry, by providing new observational perspectives. We collected vertical images of 89 gray and 6 blue whales using low cost sUASs to examine the accuracy of image based morphometry. Moreover, measurements from 192 images of a 1 m calibration object were used to examine four different scaling correction models. Results indicate that a linear mixed model including an error term for flight and date contained 0.17 m less error and 0.25 m less bias than no correction. We used the propagation uncertainty law to examine error contributions from scaling and image measurement (digitization) to determine that digitization accounted for 97% of total variance. Additionally, we present a new whale body size metric termed Body Area Index (BAI). BAI is scale invariant and is independent of body length (R2 = 0.11), enabling comparisons of body size within and among populations, and over time. With this study we present a three program analysis suite that measures baleen whales and compensates for lens distortion and corrects scaling error to produce 11 morphometric attributes from sUAS imagery. The program is freely available and is expected to improve processing efficiency and analytical continuity.  相似文献

A new nuclear magnetic resonance property of lung   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Inflated lung has a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) free-induction decay (FID) which is short compared with that of collapsed lung and those of other body tissues. An almost identically short FID is obtained from a slurry of 5-micron alumina particles in water. Interfaces between air and water in lung and between alumina and water in the slurry appear to be the source of spatial internal magnetic inhomogeneities which produce NMR line broadening and the short FID. Paired images that included lung, taken with paired symmetric and asymmetric NMR spin-echo sequences, permit the generation of an image, by subtraction, of the lung isolated from surrounding tissue. These new lung images are neither proton density, T1 (spin-lattice relaxation time), nor T2 (spin-spin relaxation time) images. They complement current NMR images and provide information about regional lung inflation. This previously unrecognized NMR property of lung tissue has potential application in NMR imaging, in quantitative determination of lung water and its distribution, and in the quantitation of regional lung inflation.  相似文献

The development of imaging methodologies for detecting blood-brain-barrier (BBB) disruption may help predict stroke patient''s propensity to develop hemorrhagic complications following reperfusion. We have developed a delayed contrast extravasation MRI-based methodology enabling real-time depiction of subtle BBB abnormalities in humans with high sensitivity to BBB disruption and high spatial resolution. The increased sensitivity to subtle BBB disruption is obtained by acquiring T1-weighted MRI at relatively long delays (~15 minutes) after contrast injection and subtracting from them images acquired immediately after contrast administration. In addition, the relatively long delays allow for acquisition of high resolution images resulting in high resolution BBB disruption maps. The sensitivity is further increased by image preprocessing with corrections for intensity variations and with whole body (rigid+elastic) registration. Since only two separate time points are required, the time between the two acquisitions can be used for acquiring routine clinical data, keeping the total imaging time to a minimum.A proof of concept study was performed in 34 patients with ischemic stroke and 2 patients with brain metastases undergoing high resolution T1-weighted MRI acquired at 3 time points after contrast injection. The MR images were pre-processed and subtracted to produce BBB disruption maps. BBB maps of patients with brain metastases and ischemic stroke presented different patterns of BBB opening. The significant advantage of the long extravasation time was demonstrated by a dynamic-contrast-enhancement study performed continuously for 18 min. The high sensitivity of our methodology enabled depiction of clear BBB disruption in 27% of the stroke patients who did not have abnormalities on conventional contrast-enhanced MRI. In 36% of the patients, who had abnormalities detectable by conventional MRI, the BBB disruption volumes were significantly larger in the maps than in conventional MRI.These results demonstrate the advantages of delayed contrast extravasation in increasing the sensitivity to subtle BBB disruption in ischemic stroke patients. The calculated disruption maps provide clear depiction of significant volumes of BBB disruption unattainable by conventional contrast-enhanced MRI.  相似文献

Liver tumors are common and imaging methods, particularly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), play an important role in their non-invasive diagnosis. Previous studies have shown that detection of liver tumors can be improved by injection of two different MR contrast agents. Here, we developed a new contrast agent, Gd-manganese-doped magnetism-engineered iron oxide (Gd-MnMEIO), with enhancement effects on both T1- and T2-weighted MR images of the liver. A 3.0T clinical MR scanner equipped with transmit/receiver coil for mouse was used to obtain both T1-weighted spoiled gradient-echo and T2-weighted fast spin-echo axial images of the liver before and after intravenous contrast agent injection into Balb/c mice with and without tumors. After pre-contrast scanning, six mice per group were intravenously injected with 0.1 mmol/kg Gd-MnMEIO, or the control agents, i.e., Gd-DTPA or SPIO. The scanning time points for T1-weighted images were 0.5, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 min after contrast administration. The post-enhanced T2-weighted images were then acquired immediately after T1-weighted acquisition. We found that T1-weighted images were positively enhanced by both Gd-DTPA and Gd-MnMEIO and negatively enhanced by SPIO. The enhancement by both Gd-DTPA and Gd-MnMEIO peaked at 0.5 min and gradually declined thereafter. Gd-MnMEIO (like Gd-DTPA) enhanced T1-weighted images and (like SPIO) T2-weighted images. Marked vascular enhancement was clearly visible on dynamic T1-weighted images with Gd-MnMEIO. In addition, the T2 signal was significantly decreased at 30 min after administration of Gd-MnMEIO. Whereas the effects of Gd-MnMEIO and SPIO on T2-weighted images were similar (p = 0.5824), those of Gd-MnMEIO and Gd-DTPA differed, with Gd-MnMEIO having a significant T2 contrast effect (p = 0.0086). Our study confirms the feasibility of synthesizing an MR contrast agent with both T1 and T2 shortening effects and using such an agent in vivo. This agent enables tumor detection and characterization in single liver MRI sections.  相似文献

Image visibility is a central issue in analyzing all kinds of microscopic images. An increase of intensity contrast helps to raise the image visibility, thereby to reveal fine image features. Accordingly, a proper evaluation of results with current imaging parameters can be used for feedback on future imaging experiments. In this work, we have applied the Laplacian function of image intensity as either an additive component (Laplacian mask) or a multiplying factor (Laplacian weight) for enhancing image contrast of high‐resolution AFM images of two molecular systems, an unknown protein imaged in air, provided by AFM COST Action TD1002 ( http://www.afm4nanomedbio.eu /), and tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) particles imaged in liquid. Based on both visual inspection and quantitative representation of contrast measurements, we found that the Laplacian weight is more effective than the Laplacian mask for the unknown protein, whereas for the TMV system the strengthened Laplacian mask is superior to the Laplacian weight. The present results indicate that a mathematical function, as exemplified by the Laplacian function, may yield varied processing effects with different operations. To interpret the diversity of molecular structure and topology in images, an explicit expression for processing procedures should be included in scientific reports alongside instrumental setups. High spectral and spatial resolution (HiSS) data, acquired with echo-planar spectroscopic imaging (EPSI), can be used to acquire water spectra from each small image voxel. These images are sensitive to changes in local susceptibility caused by superparamagnetic iron oxide particles (SPIO); therefore, we hypothesized that images derived from HiSS data are very sensitive to tumor neovasculature following injection of SPIO. Accurate image registration was used to validate HiSS detection of neovasculature with histology and micro-computed tomographic (microCT) angiography. Athymic nude mice and Copenhagen rats were inoculated with Dunning AT6.1 prostate tumor cells in the right hind limb. The tumor region was imaged pre- and post-intravenous injection of SPIO. Three-dimensional assemblies of the CD31-stained histologic slices of the mouse legs and the microCT images of the rat vascular casts were registered with EPSI. The average distance between HiSS-predicted regions of high vascular density on magnetic resonance imaging and CD31-stained regions on histology was 200 μm. Similarly, vessels identified by HiSS in the rat images coincided with vasculature in the registered microCT image. The data demonstrate a strong correlation between tumor vasculature identified using HiSS and two gold standards: histology and microCT angiography.  相似文献

We analyzed image characteristics in T(1)-, T(2)-, and diffusion-weighted in vitro magnetic resonance (MR) images acquired at predefined stages of the ovarian cycle in 36 heifers to test the hypothesis that MR image attributes of the follicle wall reflect the physiologic status of ovarian follicles (viable, atretic, dominant, subordinate). Numerical pixel values (NPV), standard deviation of pixel values (heterogeneity), and area under the curve were used to assess images of follicle walls. Pixel values of the wall were used to calculate a regression line from which intercept, slope, and coefficient of determination were calculated. In T(1) images, NPV of dominant follicles were less likely to fit a regression line at the preovulatory phase than at any other phase (P < 0.1). Preovulatory dominant follicles had lower area under the curve in diffusion-weighted images than early and late static dominant follicles of the anovulatory wave (P < 0.02). Subordinate follicles in the presence of a preovulatory dominant follicle had lower mean NPV in T(1)- and T(2)-weighted images and lower intercepts in T(1)-weighted images than subordinate follicles of the anovulatory wave (P < 0.02). Early atresia of dominant follicles was identified at the late static phase by greater area, mean NPV, and slope in T(2)-weighted images (P < 0.02). Preovulatory dominant follicles had poor fit of NPV to a regression line in T(1)-weighted images and lower area under the curve in diffusion images. Atretic follicles had brighter walls with more acute transitions from follicular fluid to stroma in T(2)-weighted images and more heterogeneous walls in diffusion images. The MR image attributes of the follicle wall reflected the physiologic status of dominant and largest subordinate follicles.  相似文献

AIM: To compare technical parameters and clinically relevant aspects of on- and off-resonance MTC sequences in mid- and high-field MR systems. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Both on- and off-resonance techniques were combined with an FFE sequence using 0.5 and 1.5 Tesla superconducting systems. Parameters were systematically measured by scanning a cadaveric knee joint. Signal-to-noise ratios and MT ratios for fat, cartilage and reference solution (copper sulphate) were determined. Minimal TR and the energy absorption rate were also compared. RESULTS: The MT effect at 1.5 T was more pronounced. However, using optimized parameters, clinically adequate MT contrast was achieved with both techniques and both MT units. The most important parameters for the off-resonance method are pulse angle and off-centre frequency; for the on-resonance method, pulse angle and number of composite pulse elements. Energy absorption was below 2 W/kg. Minimal TR was prolonged by up to 400%. CONCLUSION: In order to produce MTC images, optimized parameters should be applied. Using optimized pulse parameters, adequate MTC imaging is achievable with mid- and high-field systems using on- and off-resonance techniques. To ensure comparability of MTC studies, the pulse parameters need to be given, and, ideally, standardized.  相似文献

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is the most promising new technology to appear in the clinical imaging arena since the advent of x-ray transmission computed tomography in the early 1970s. Five independent tissue characteristics (spin density, spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times, flow and spectral shift information) are accessible to MR imaging, and their relative influence in the magnetic resonance image can be varied by appropriate selection of pulse sequences and pulse times. All major organ systems appear to be amenable to MR imaging, and some are revealed with superior definition compared with their appearance in images obtained by alternate imaging technologies. Of particular interest is the superior contrast resolution in MR images of the brain and spinal cord, and the absence of bone- and motion-induced artifacts in images of the abdomen and pelvis. Applications of MR imaging to the heart and great vessels are just developing, as are new types of contrast agents for use in MR imaging. In vivo chemical spectroscopic measurements by magnetic resonance are heralded by some investigators as the most significant contribution that magnetic resonance will make ultimately to clinical diagnosis. At present, the number of MR imaging units is extremely low, and clinical studies are proceeding at a slow rate. Nevertheless, it is possible to provide a preliminary evaluation of the usefulness of MR imaging in a variety of clinical applications. This article is such an evaluation, tempered by the acknowledgement that much additional work remains to be done.  相似文献
